A Message from Julie Dahlen

Director of Library & Recreation Services cover of this Activity Guide. The park was completed just before the end of 2014, as we bid adieu to our city’s quasquicentennial celebration. What a Ƃtting gift for our 125th!

C

ontrary to a popular adage, sometimes the best gifts come in very large packages. Case in point: our beautiful new Uptown Family Park at Oak and 36th streets, featured proudly on the

The Uptown Family Park represents the can-do spirit that has characterized Paso Roblans since our 1889 incorporation as a city. Over Ƃve years ago, Annie Robb, my predecessor as Library and Recreation Services Director, secured a $2.5 million grant to fund park construction. The subsequent work

of several City staff, local elementary school students, neighborhood families and a variety of community volunteers enabled us to complete this park during a signiƂcant economic recession – a feat that can be looked upon with pride by all Paso Roblans. And so, I wish a Ƃnal “happy quasquicentennial” to our great city -with great expectations for what the next 125 years will bring!

Often included in many lists of all-time best dog movies, “Best in Show” is a “mockumentary” about dog shows as it follows the hopes and dreams of several dog owners at a Kennel Club Dog Show in Philadelphia. The film was the 2001 American Comedy Awards winner for Funniest Motion Picture, Funniest Supporting Actor, and Funniest Supporting Actress. Famed film critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert both gave “Two Thumbs Up” to this wickedly funny mockumentary. For information about this event and other dog park activities, please call (805)239-4437 or email info@sherwooddogpark.com.

Dogs can bring their families for a 4K/2K run or walk through the beautiful Salinas River walk trail at the 7th Annual Paso Robles Dog Jog. Event proceeds benefit Sherwood Dog Park in Paso Robles, a non-profit organization. The fun run starts and ends at the Kennedy Club Fitness in Paso Robles. Participants will receive a voucher for one Lion’s Club pancake breakfast (add’l vouchers are $5 each), a racer’s goodie bag, an event dog bandana, and a medal. Contests will start at 10 a.m. for Best Pooch Smooch, Most Appropriate Name, Best Smile, Best Dog Owner Look-Alike, and Most Unusual Face with prizes for winners. Raffle drawings for merchandise and services will be held throughout the event. Early bird race registration is $15 per dog until March 19th and $20 through race day. Infant Survival

Introduce your child to the joy of learning to swim in our warmwater indoor pool! This wonderful environment will make it so much easier for them to learn – and you will enjoy it so much more, too. The

Infants, six to twelve months, learn to roll over from a face down position in the water onto their backs to relax, breathe. Babies will learn to roll and float fully clothed in case of an accidental fall into water.

Municipal Indoor Pool Steffi Saul-Ketzler 6 – 12M $368/5 weeks Kinder Swim

Results in weeks not years! Toddlers and older children are taught the swim-float-swim-sequence. They learn to swim —full immersion and independently—and when exhausted during their swim, learn to flip onto their back, breathe, relax, regain strength, and continue to swim to safety. Children will learn to swim fully clothed in case of an accidental fall into water. Survival swimming skills serve as the foundation for learning correct stroke technique, while protecting your child from aquatic accidents. This program evolves from survival skills to recreational swimming with beginning strokes within a short time period and allows your child and you to enjoy the water safely. Children take approximately 20 to 32 lessons to acquire and consistently demonstrate these skills. Lessons are one-on-one, 3 days a week, scheduled between 7:00 and 9:15 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays. Reusable swim diaper may be required. Since lessons are individualized, each child progresses at his or her own pace. Duration of lessons depends on age, temperament, and coordination. Should a child complete a program in less time, a credit towards maintenance classes will be issued. Graduates may sign up for Fundays. $45 registration fee is payable to the instructor. Page Graeber has lived and worked in Paso Robles for 24 years and has won numerous awards. The theme for her January display is “Enjoy the Sights around Us.” Her work will include paintings of Downtown City Park and buildings; local vineyards and fields; historic California missions; and great seaside communities for cool escapes.

Alice Ronke’s style is representational, impressionistic, with a subject matter that is predominately landscapes but also includes still life and floral topics. Her goal is to capture the excitement, rhythm, sense of peace, or sheer beauty of a scene. To clarify the feeling she wishes to express in a painting, Ronke uses the principles of composition to bring order to the chaos of nature. April Artist of the Month:

(sometime more!) tirelessly keeping the shelves of the children’s section of the library organized. She truly goes above and beyond in every way keeping the books clean, making sure they are on the correct shelf in the right order and creating attractive displays on the end of each shelf. She trains new volunteers and is an incredibly important part of the library in so many ways.

If you are a fan of online banking, you will love the convenience of paying your library fines and fees from home using your credit or debit card. Online payment is fast and easy, and you can even request an e-mail “receipt” of your transaction. Simply: • log on to your library account • click Fines and Fees • check off items to pay • click Pay Fines Now • enter VISA, MasterCard or Discover # • enter your e-mail address • click Next - charges appear • click Submit Payment

“Shirley works tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that each book is exactly where it should be (a daunting job for sure!). She is an exceptional, incredibly hard working and dedicated volunteer and we are so very lucky and grateful to have her help,” according to Children’s Services Librarian Heather Stephenson. The annual volunteer reception recognizes the 120-plus Library volunteers and the 16,000-plus hours they contribute each year in pursuit of excellence in library service. Body In Balance - Qigong (Chi Gung) Try something new that is really old! Qi (chi) means energy or breath and gong (gung) means practice. Tai Chi and qigong are related but qigong is easier to learn. Besides increased breathing capacity, posture and balance, Qigong improves relaxation, blood pressure, circulation, flexibility and range of motion. Basically these gentle strengthening exercises coordinate breathing with effortless movements. Qigong enhances overall health and vitality and is easily integrated into all daily activities. CONTAMINATION can make any recyclable material ineligible for recycling. Some materials, like metals, can be recycled even with high levels of contamination. Other materials, like polystyrene, are barely recyclable to begin with, and can be rendered completely ineligible for recycling even with the slightest trace of contamination.
