On The Cover... Kaden and an Jackson Medeiros, ages 5 an and 2, along with Joe and Ni Nick Taranto, ages 5 and 2, hhave big ideas about renova renovating the Downtown City Park playground. Bran Brandon Medeiros of the REC Foundation, and Ch Christopher Taranto of the Parks and R Recreation Advisory C Committee, are dads that will take their comments to heart. he See page 7 for details on this wonderful pproject.

A Message From Julie Dahlen Director of Library and Recreation Services Our Downtown City Park is referred to as the “crown jewel of Paso Robles, and for good reason. The park has been the venue for Pioneer Day picnics, Main Street events and summertime concerts, not to mention thousands of personal occasions for Paso Robles families. I fondly recall celebrating my own daughter’s 3rd birthday at City Park; how excited she was to play on the new yellow and orange playground equipment - yes, the very same equipment featured on our fall Activity Guide cover 25 years later! While we applaud City staff for creating such an enduring play area, the Paso Robles REC Foundation recognizes that the time has come to spruce it up a bit. A committee led by Foundation President, Brandon Medeiros, and Parks and Recreation Advisory Chair, Christopher Taranto, has begun a significant fundraising campaign to renovate the Downtown City Park playground. Their $250,000 target is lofty, yet the commitment runs deep for these Paso Roblans and others who have already pledged their financial assistance. The Playground Renovation Committee welcomes your support as well. If your service club, business or family wishes to be a part of the effort, please take a moment to return the donation form in this Activity Guide. For more information about the campaign, see page 7 or e-mail me at jdahlen@prcity.com. The can-do spirit that has characterized our town for over 100 years will, I am certain, restore the sheen of our crown jewel, our Downtown City Park. 7KDQN \RX 3DVR 5REOHV

September Artist of the Month: Carol Timson Ball Carol Timson Ball, inspired by an artistic grandfather, began her life in art long before her acceptance at the age of 16 into England’s Loughborough College of Art & Design. Emigrating from England to Southern California in the late seventies introduced her to California’s landscape and palette. When Carol retired, she was lured by the missions, wineries, hills, and coast line of the Central Coast, which fueled her creative indulgences and inspiration. She continues to broaden her artistic capabilities and to hone her landscape art skills through plein air painting in pastels and oils. September Library Display Case: Matt Pomerico’s Wood Carvings

October Artist of the Month: Janice Pluma

November Library Display Case: Janice Strakbein’s Altered Book Display

December Artist of the Month: Ginger Toomer Ginger Toomer, a third-generation Californian, was raised in the small rural community of Upper Ojai near to the Los Padres National Forest. This setting provided the chance to observe and draw many animals, birds, and nature scenes - often the basis for her paintings today. Her work has won local awards and a purchase award for a public collection in Ventura County. December Library Display Case: Friends of the Library gifts for the holidays.

Janice was born in Los Angeles and has been a resident of Paso Robles since 1989. Upon graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Art and Design, she worked for various San Luis Obispo county newspapers and magazines. Janice is happiest working with found objects, and uses them to create both two and three-dimensional forms. She enjoys texture, bold brushstrokes, and unusual materials. She often paints without using collage techniques for the sheer joy of playing with juicy, brilliant color. October Library Display Case: Friends of the Library will display wonderful gifts to purchase.

November Artist of the Month: Glen Gibson Glen has been painting and experimenting with abstract forms of art for over fifty years. His abstract paintings have won awards in juried shows in the art-rich Central Coast of California, and hang in a number of private collections. He presently works exclusively with water

September Artist of the Month: Carol Timson Ball

Carol Timson Ball, inspired by an artistic grandfather, began her life in art long before her acceptance at the age of 16 into England’s Loughborough College of Art & Design, which led her to a career in Graphic Design. Emigrating from England to Southern California in the late seventies introduced her to California’s landscape and palette, which fast became her artistic pursuit. Carol retired from her graphic arts career and, in 2001, was lured by the landscape and lifestyle of the Central Coast, where she soon engaged herself full-time in fine art production. Nature’s beauty abounds in the area’s missions, wineries, hills, and coastline, fueling Carol’s creative indulgences and inspiration. She continues to broaden her artistic capabilities and to hone her landscape art skills through plein air painting in pastels and oils. September Library Display Case: Matt Pomerico’s Wood Carvings

Janice Pluma will be the featured artist this October 2012. Janice is a native Californian, born in Los Angeles, raised in Sacramento, and a resident of Paso Robles since 1989. She’s been interested in art since childhood, and has studied it formally since junior high school. Janice attended fine art classes at colleges in California, Colorado, and North Dakota. After moving to Santa Maria, Janice was accepted to Cal Poly’s graphic design program in San Luis Obispo. Upon graduation with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Art and Design, she worked for various San Luis Obispo county newspapers and magazines. Janice is happiest working with found objects, and uses them to create both two and three-dimensional forms. She enjoys texture, bold brush strokes, and unusual materials, along with the challenge of combining unorthodox elements into a cohesive composition. However, she often paints without using collage techniques for the sheer joy of playing with juicy, brilliant color. “I am an avid collector of handmade pottery and fused glass. My extensive collection includes pieces created by talented artists from across the United States. This series is inspired by these men and women for whom I have deep admiration. My paintings pay homage to the lush glazes and unique textures resulting from the union of earth and metal with fire, and to the individuals who brought them to life.”

CITY LIBRARY December Artist of the Month: Ginger Toomer

November Artist of the Month: Glen Gibson

Abstract artist Glen Gibson is a member of the International Acrylic Artists Association, the San Luis Obispo Art Center, and a board member of the Paso Robles Art Association. His paintings have won awards in juried shows in the art-rich Central Coast of California, and hang in a number of private collections. Glen has been painting and experimenting with abstract forms of art for over fifty years. He presently works exclusively with water based acrylic paint applied to canvas. He strives for balance of color, tones, texture, and light. All of Glen’s paintings are one-of-a-kind originals, and because of their abstract complexity, cannot be reproduced. He asks that observers view his paintings with an open mind, and let their eyes and emotions be the judge of his work.

Ginger Toomer, a third-generation Californian, was raised in the small rural community of Upper Ojai. She attributes her love of art in part to heredity and in part to environment. Both grandmothers were artistic, and she was fortunate to grow up near them in a home adjacent to the Los Padres National Forest. This setting provided the chance to observe and draw many animals, birds, and nature scenes - often the basis for her paintings today. Ginger holds a charter membership in the Sierra Pastel Society. Her work has won local awards and a purchase award for a public collection in Ventura County. She has been the featured artist for the Paso Robles Art Association, the Paso Robles City Library, the Paso Robles City Hall Lobby, and the Village Art in Arroyo Grande. LIBRARY ADULT BOOK GROUP September 20, October 18, November 15 & January 17 The Library’s Adult Book Group recently celebrated its 15th year this past summer, but we are still welcoming new members. Our group reads popular literary fiction and non-fiction books (usually two fiction books and one non-fiction book in a three month cycle). Members choose which books they would like to read, and everyone is encouraged to make suggestions. Many of our members joined in order to read books they might otherwise have never picked up. Complete details of the program will be available at the main desk of the library beginning November 1, or call 237-3870 for more information. THE GIVING TREE

In the spirit of the holidays, the Paso Robles City Library is again offering patrons an opportunity to serve their community and reduce their overdue fines at the same time. From November 13 through December 31, the Library invites patrons to “can” their fines, forgiving $1.00 in fines for every canned or other nonperishable food item they donate (maximum $16 per Library card account). “This program provides an opportunity for families and individuals to help out those in need in our community while paying off overdue fines owed to the Library,” explained Library Manager Karen Christiansen. “This year we will be accepting soup-can or larger cans of soup, chili, fruit and vegetables; 6 oz. or larger cans of meat, chicken or seafood; 1 lb. or larger packages of rice or pasta; and boxed family-sized foods such as macaroni and cheese.” To take part in the food drive, bring your food items from the list above to the www.prcity.com/recreation

November 13 – December 31 Are you looking for a unique gift to honor a book-loving friend or family member? Visit the Paso Robles Library Foundation’s Giving Tree. Located near the Circulation Desk, the Giving Tree is covered with book cover ornaments that represent new titles the Library would like to purchase. Choose a book ornament from the tree and bring it to the Circulation Desk with your donation of $25. You may designate the name of the person to whom you would like the book dedicated. Once staff receives your selected title, they will place a donation label in the book to commemorate your gift. All donations are fully tax deductible and support the Paso Robles City Library.

ORNAMENT MAKING

Thursday, December 6 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of the holidays to attend the Library’s annual holiday event. This year, we will be making lovely ornaments to hang on your tree, so come and share in the spirit of the season at this fun-filled event. Ornament makers will be provided with all basic supplies, but may want to bring special items such as small photos, stickers or other flat lightweight objects to enhance their creations. Signups for this event begin on November 13 at the Paso Robles Library Circulation Desk. Space is limited. Family groups are welcome, however due to the nature of the tools and materials used, children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

court is about one-third the size of a tennis court with a net that is 2 inches shorter. Players use a composite solid paddle and a plastic wiffle ball so the pace of the game is less demanding than tennis. Jack Hodges, the instructor, just retired from coaching college baseball and moved to the Central Coast. An avid tennis player and tennis instructor, he discovered the advantages of Pickleball. This userfriendly sport provides a great workout with less stress on the joints than the game of tennis. Jack will have loaner paddles and balls at the demonstration. If you decide to register for the class, talk to Jack about purchasing your own equipment. Cost for a paddle and a set of wiffle balls is about $60. A $10 annual material fee is payable to the instructor. Contact Jack at 949-547-2251 for details or go to www. usapa.org!
