A Message From Julie Dahlen

Director of Library and Recreation Services “Solvitur ambulando--it is solved by walking.” --St. Augustine From peace marches to parades and even man’s ¿rst steps on the moon, a host of social movements, celebrations, and technological developments have been initiated by simply taking a walk. This ¿rst Activity Guide of 2013 celebrates hitting the trail! The impressive River Trail sculpture featured on the Guide cover hails the increasing connectivity of our trail system with the completion of the Charolais Corridor section and the River Road extension from Navajo to Creston Road. What better time to take the contemplative walk endorsed by St. Augustine? In a more ¿gurative sense, the Department of Library and Recreation Services continues to provide numerous avenues for us all to move forward in the New Year. Physical ¿tness, skill in gardening and photography, participation in local government—all are to be achieved, one step at a time, by taking advantage of the classes and opportunities offered through the City of Paso Robles. It is solved by walking—here’s to our community walking side-by-side to a 2013 that is merry and bright.

2013 Paso Robles Festival Of The Arts

February Artist of the Month: Margrete Koreska

Saturday, May 25, 2013 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

As a child, Margrete Koreska was fascinated by her father’s passion for painting in nature. In 1993, she took up oil painting with accomplished artist, Margot Lennartz, and received training at Glendale College. Since 2008, she has been studying with local artist, John Barnard, who has greatly inÀuenced her development as an artist. She often uses a palette knife to obtain more textures and bold colors and likes to experiment with semi-realism and semi-abstract.

The Paso Robles Festival of the Arts celebrates the visual, musical and performing arts this Memorial Day Weekend in the Paso Robles City Park. The day starts with a Plein Air Quick-Draw and Auction, followed by an Outdoor Fine Art Show and Sale, a public mural project, hands-on children’s and teen art stations, environmental displays, live music, dance performances and other musical and visual surprises. The Paso Robles Festival of the Arts provides an annual update on the exciting Salinas River Corridor Project and supports local arts organizations. This event is FREE to the public! For more information, go to www.pasoartfestival.com.

March Artist of the Month: Melinda Martin

Melinda Martin will exhibit a collection of photographs representing numerous styles and photo processes—not your standard macros, landscapes, or portraits but eclectic and unusual. Martin has been a photographer for over 15 years and has received awards from the Paso Robles Art Association and the Mid State Fair.

According to Joan Scott, being an artist is an adventure— ¿nding materials, choosing colors, and developing a painting to its ¿nished state. She taught for several years, then returned to school to receive a B.F.A. in sculpture/mixed media at the University of New Mexico. Scott is a member of local art organizations and has taught art classes to children and adults. Her work is in private collections across the country and in Latin America.

Alice Ronke paints in a representational, impressionistic style, with a subject matter that is predominately landscapes but also includes still life and Àoral topics. Her goal is to capture the excitement, rhythm, sense of peace, or sheer beauty of a scene. Ronke uses the principles of composition to bring order to the chaos of nature. www.prcity.com/recreation

Alice Ronke paints in a representational, impressionistic style, with a subject matter that is predominately landscapes but also includes still life and Àoral topics. Her goal is to capture the excitement, rhythm, sense of peace, or sheer beauty of a scene. To clarify the feeling she wishes to express in a painting, Ronke uses the principles of composition to bring order to the chaos of nature.

43

As a child, Margrete Koreska was fascinated by her father’s passion for painting in nature. After moving to Southern California in 1993, she took up oil painting with Margot Lennartz, an accomplished artist, as well as received training at Glendale College. Painting on canvas became her obsession. In 2005, Koreska discovered the charm and beauty of Paso Robles and it became her new home. Since 2008, she has been studying with John Barnard, who has greatly inÀuenced her development as an artist. Painting with oil is her favorite medium, and she loves the feel and ease of blending. She often uses a palette knife to obtain more textures and bold colors and likes to experiment with semi-realism and semiabstract.

In the past year, the Paso Robles Library Book Club has explored several iconic themes. We traveled the United States with The English Major (Harrison), discussing the theme of mid-life changes; explored a magical rare book library in The Shadow of the Wind (Ruiz Zafon), discovering the soul of the book; and remembered the struggles of the Great Depression, discussing the theme of perseverance in Growing Up (Baker). The books our group chooses to read are all popular literary ¿ction and non-¿ction, often just the type of books that include universal themes many of us ponder throughout our lives. If you are interested in joining our monthly book discussion group, call Karen, 237-3870 or visit www.prcity.com/ library for upcoming book titles.

On Monday, April 15, 2013, your federal and state taxes for 2012 will be due. Will you be ready? If you are looking for a particular tax form, chances are the Paso Robles City Library can help. The Library is one of the few places you can go for assistance with both federal and state tax forms. We carry Instruction booklets for the most common forms, and Reference Desk staff can assist with accessing and printing forms from websites. They usually have a small supply of the most common forms already printed out for you to purchase. Copies of tax forms (as with all copies) are only 20 cents per page, so bring in your list of forms needed to get your copies today. Library staff is not able to assist with determining which forms to ¿le, nor are we equipped to assist you in ¿lling out forms. However, this year as last year, we will be partnering with AARP Tax Aide and VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program) to provide tax assistance. The AARP/VITA program is for those who earn $50,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certi¿ed volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation to quali¿ed individuals, assisting with various tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled. Beginning in January, call the Library to make an appointment for assistance with your taxes. For more information about the Library’s available tax forms, call 2373870. The new sports craze that is hitting the nation is coming to Centennial Park this September. Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of tennis and table tennis. Played on a court similar, but smaller than a tennis court, the game is more accessible to a wider range of players, particularly seniors and youngsters. The court is about one-third the size of a tennis court with a net that is 2 inches shorter. Players use a composite solid paddle and a plastic whifÀe ball so the pace of the game is less demanding than tennis.

Jack will have loaner paddles and balls at the demonstration. If you decide to register for the class, talk to Jack about purchasing your own equipment. Cost for a paddle and a set of whifÀe balls is about $60. A $10 annual material fee is payable to the instructor. Contact Jack at 949-547-2251 for details or go to www. usapa.org! Register for monthly classes at Centennial Park or online at www.prcity. com/recreation. Come check out this great sport and you’ll be hooked for life!
