A Message from Julie Dahlen Director of Library & Recreation Services The dawn of a new year is ample cause for reflection and celebration; add to that our city’s 125th anniversary, and do we ever have reason to celebrate! From cover to cover, our Activity Guide evokes that festive spirit, providing abundant opportunities to “party like it’s 1889.” To ring in our anniversary year, Paso Roblans are invited to enjoy fireworks in City Park this New Year’s Eve -- just the start of a year chock full of commemorative events. Adding to the fun is the usual array of programming at the City Library and in our parks and pools, brought to you by the Department of Library and Recreation Services. What better time to take a class, keep fit, and feel proud to be a citizen of Paso Robles, 125 years strong!

BASIC PROGRAMS: Infant Survival Infants, six to twelve months, learn to roll over from a face down position in the water onto their backs to relax, breathe. Results in weeks not years! Toddlers and older children are taught the swim-float-swimsequence. They learn to swim - full immersion and independently and when exhausted during their swim, learn to flip onto their back, breathe, relax, regain strength, and continue to swim to safety. Children will learn to swim fully clothed in case of an accidental fall into water. Survival swimming skills serve as the foundation for learning correct stroke technique, while protecting your child from aquatic accidents. This program evolves from survival skills to recreational swimming with beginning strokes within a short time period and allows your child and you to enjoy the water safely. Children take approximately 20 to 32 lessons to acquire and consistently demonstrate these skills. Lessons are one-on-one, 3 days a week. Reusable swim diaper if appropriate. Since lessons are individualized, each child progresses at his or her own pace. Duration of lessons depends on age, temperament, and coordination. Should a child complete a program in less time, a credit towards maintenance classes will be issued. Graduates may sign up for Fundays.

Alice Ronke paints in a representational, impressionistic style, with a subject matter that is predominately landscapes but also includes still life and floral topics. Her goal is to capture the excitement, rhythm, sense of peace, or sheer beauty of a scene. Ronke clarifies the feeling she wishes to express in a painting by applying the principles of composition to bring order to the chaos of nature. FEBRUARY ARTIST OF THE MONTH JUAN GILDRES February features the photography of Juan Gildres. FEBRUARY DISPLAY CASE February will feature the creative ceramic works of art instructor Jeanne Aird’s Flamson Middle School students.

LIBRARY ADULT BOOK GROUP

Expand Your Horizons with the Adult Book Club! Thur at 7:00 p.m.-Jan 16, Feb 20, Mar 20, Apr 17 & May 15 Library Conference Room Our Library Book Club recently celebrated its 16-year anniversary, and we are still going strong. We have read well over 100 titles, usually reading two fiction and one non-fiction title in a threemonth cycle. Recent selections have included The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker, Wild by Cheryl Strayed, and Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman. Most of our members joined in order to read books they might otherwise have never picked up.

The first event of the year-long 125th Anniversary Celebration is fast approaching and volunteers are needed to help get the party started! December 31, 2013’s New Year’s Eve Glow in the Park & Fireworks event promises to be spectacular! The Downtown City Park activities will include such family favorites as Glow-in-the-Dark croquet, Glow-in-the-Dark bocce ball, Glow-in-the-Dark horseshoes, Glow-inthe-Dark 4-square and other glowing fun throughout the park all evening. Then ring in the New Year with family and friends at the City’s first-ever fireworks show off the City Hall roof! Food trucks and warming stations will also be available. Volunteer shifts are noon - 5:00 p.m. (park set-up); 7:30 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. or 9:30 p.m. midnight (assisting with games and activities); and midnight - 2:00 a.m. (cleanup). Library Volunteer Nancy Stephens was honored as the Library Volunteer of the Year 2013 at the Paso Robles City Library’s annual volunteer reception. Nancy began her service to the Paso Robles City Library in September 1996 and has been a tremendous asset to the library every day since. Wearing two hats, Nancy is responsible for training volunteers in the processing of materials new to the collection, and for training and supervising those volunteers who clean and mend items well-worn by public use. “This is the 12th year the Library has presented a Library Volunteer of the Year Award and we couldn’t be happier to award it this year to Nancy,” said Library Manager Karen Christiansen. “She has been a fantastic asset to our staff, quietly working behind the scenes to keep both new and repaired materials accessible to our patrons. Her calm presence has made it easy for new volunteers and staff to learn the art of materials maintenance. We thank her for being such a great library advocate!” Previous winners are Jean Schubert, 2002; Janine Kramer, 2003; Audrey Krauss 2004; Ann Martinez, 2005; Denise Surber, 2006; Joan Case, 2007; Mike Reagan, 2008; Cappy Culver, 2009; Nan Madding, 2010; Bill Dupree, 2011; and Jean Schweitzer, 2012. Nancy’s name has been added to the perpetual plaque in the Library. The annual volunteer reception recognizes the 130-plus Library volunteers and the 16,000-plus hours they contribute each year in pursuit of excellence in library service. For more information about volunteering in the City Library, please visit www.prcity. com/library or call Volunteer Coordinator Suzanne Robitaille, 237-3870.

DEPARTMENT POLICIES Registration: Jesusita Martinez (805) 237-3988

Activity Enrollment A minimum number of participants is required to hold programs. The Department of Library and Recreation Services reserves the right to cancel a program that does not meet this minimum and participants will receive a full refund or credit. It is highly recommended that you pre-register as early as possible to avoid programs being cancelled due to lack of enrollment.

Activity Refund & Cancellation For ongoing classes, participants may drop the class after they attend the first meeting and receive a partial refund, but they must file for a refund before the second class. No refunds will be issued after the second class. For Summer Swim Program or classes only meeting once, you must file for a refund at least five business days before the class starts. If the participant cancels, he/she must contact the Centennial Park Registration Office, and will be subject to a minimum $7 service charge. Refunds for cash registrations will be mailed from the City Finance Department approximately two weeks after the request is received. Refunds on checks will be issued after the check has cleared the bank, which is generally within 30 days of receipt. In order to avoid the $7 fee, a participant may choose to keep the money on account to be used for another class.

Scholarships Scholarships for all types of recreation programs; including camps, classes, and sports programs, are available for income-qualifying seniors and youth. Call 237-3988 or stop by Centennial Park Registration Office for more information. www.prcity.com/recreation

We have a commingled, or single stream, recycling system. We allow customers to recycle without sorting. This program is easy, efficient, and maximizes materials accepted for recycling. The recyclables are transported to a material recovery facility (MRF) where they are sorted into highquality feedstock streams.

InstructIons • All recyclables must be placed in the container with the lid completely closed. • Only use the recycling container provided by us. • No Hazardous Materials such as oil, pesticides, paint or cleaners. No putrescible waste like food scraps, diapers, etc.

contaMInatIon can make any recyclable material ineligible for recycling. Some materials, like metals, can be recycled even with high levels of contamination. Other materials, like polystyrene, are barely recyclable to begin with, and can be rendered completely ineligible for recycling even with the slightest trace of contamination.

www.prwaste.com/recycling-guide Check for updates. Our list increases as recycling technology improves.
