WELCOME

W

hen it comes to Surfers Paradise there is always something to see or do come the weekend. It could be as simple as a coffee along the Esplanade, a morning stroll on the beach with the dog, or an adventure-packed weekend with the kids. That’s why we love the weekends. And not in the usual “Thank God the work week is over” way, we love the weekends on the Gold Coast because it’s our sanctuary. A place to feel the ocean breeze wrapped up in a sweater in winter, and surf the waves in the heat of the summer. A place to enjoy all the city benefits - the buzz of new bistros and cafés, entertainment venues, markets and shows - all within a natural paradise. Off the back of the news that Surfers Paradise was a winner in the TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice awards for Destinations on the Rise for 2016, we have compiled a few ideas to help you enjoy your weekends in 4 |

PRECINCT MAGAZINE / Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast

Surfers Paradise even more. From the latest coffee and tea spots, to the long-standing attractions that are known and loved, and the very heart of the cultural precinct, we take you on a weekend journey full of everything quintessential about Gold Coast living. Remember, this is a mere taste, there is so much more to keep discovering! Visit page 19 to read more. Of course in other major news, one of the biggest shows in Surfers Paradise returns much to the delight of die-hard fans. Viva Surfers Paradise is back with the King himself, Elvis, and more tribute artists than ever before. Elvis headliners Dean Z and Diogo Light will be taking the stage on various nights with their bands in tow to give truly authentic performances and sing all the favourites. Plus, watch the best acts from around the world bring other legends to life with tribute artists for Michael Jackson, Abba, Johnny Cash, The Beatles and more. The event spans over ten days from Friday 8 – Sunday 17 July and is more akin to a tribute music festival, with rock ‘n’ roll dancing, gospel choir shows, movie nights and the Classic Show ‘n’ Shine car display

for vintage car-aficionados. The precinct takes a step back in time to pay respect to legends that inspired, delighted and forever changed the music scene. Don’t miss out. Full details on page 6. Make sure you check out all the arts and cultural activities on over the winter months, with a series of great shows heading for the Arts Centre Gold Coast (page 16), including a retelling of an Ancient Greek classic by renowned Australian circus company, Circa. You can read more about this compelling show on page 24. And while we are already spoilt for choice, we couldn’t help but cover some of the Surfers Paradise winners of The Weekend Edition’s EAT/drink awards, with winners taking out Best New Café, Best New Restaurant and Best Bar. More on page 29. Whether you plan ahead or take every weekend as it comes, we hope, like us, you live in the moment and feel humbled by the surroundings that make this part of the world so liveable and loved. Until next time, The team at Precinct. SURFERS PARADISE EDITION / 2016

LO N G L I V E T H E L E G E N D S They might evoke a time in your life that you remember fondly. A time when you burned up the disco floor as Abba’s “Dancing Queen” blared out around you, or further back perhaps, when The Beatles first toured Australia and you were there amongst the staggering crowds, just to catch a glimpse of a once little known English rock band who catapulted to fame and had the world at their feet. Maybe you were an Elvis fan, not just for the way he mesmerised and moved on stage, but for the way his soulful voice made you feel.

T

As Viva Surfers Paradise returns in 2016 with more shows and entertainment than ever before, we pay tribute to the legends gone and the legends still living. We bring to Surfers Paradise the best tribute artists the world has to offer, to humbly take the stage in honour of times past. Their legacy remains, as will their music. Long live the legends. COVER STORY

hese legends of the music industry are enduring for a reason: their songs were revolutionary, they were oneof-a-kind in a landscape that was saturated in the same. They paved the way for many musicians to come, and they remain the benchmark to which many aim to achieve.

ALL SHOOK UP Precinct sat down with world-famous Elvis tribute artist Dean Z as he prepares to bring his renowned Elvis shows down under, much to the anticipation of die-hard fans! Q. Thanks for speaking with us Dean! Can we start by asking, how in fact you became an Elvis tribute artist? A. Well thank you for having me. I am excited to be back in Australia! I knew very early on in life that I wanted to be an entertainer and it all started with a talent show at my sister’s primary school. I was about three or so and mum made me a jumpsuit. I performed “Jailhouse Rock” and every time I’d shake my leg, everyone would scream! I loved it so much that I’ve been shaking ever since! Q. Your popularity not only comes from your singing talent but also your ability to respectfully and authentically recreate Elvis at his very best. Were you a fan of Elvis before embarking on this career? A. Thank you very much, that’s such a nice compliment. I am in fact a huge Elvis fan and have been ever since I was just three years old. I saw him on television and was instantly mesmerised. I didn’t know it could be a career at the time, it was just something I did for fun. It’s just as much fun for me to sing Elvis’ music today as it was back then.

COVER STORY

Q. What do you most admire about Elvis Presley? A. There are so many things to love about Elvis. Beyond his music, what I have always admired most about Elvis was his giving spirit. He was truly a generous soul who left an imprint on the hearts of everyone who met him or who had the pleasure of hearing his soulful music. 10 |

PRECINCT MAGAZINE / Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast

Q. Why do you think his legend is so enduring?

Q. You must have met a lot of Elvis fans along the way! Any who stand out?

A. Elvis was the total package. They broke the mold with him! He had the looks, a heart of gold, undeniable charisma and an amazing voice. If you think about it, he was actually quite a trendsetter not only in rock and roll music, but in fashion too. I mean, he was the coolest man to ever walk the earth! People of all ages from all over the world gravitate towards Elvis and it’s because his music and image are timeless.

A. Yes, I have met so many Elvis fans around the world and I feel like we are all a big Elvis family! I am always shocked when I travel internationally, to countries that do not speak English and the Elvis fans there know every lyric to all the songs! Elvis is truly a global phenomenon and he has the most loyal fan base.

Q. How do you prepare before a show? A. As an artist, I like to get into character so I watch videos of Elvis so he is fresh in my mind when I walk onto that stage. I also stretch and do some vocal warm ups. Q. What do you enjoy most about performing? A. I love to make people happy so when I look out into an audience and see them smiling and having a good time, I know I’ve done my job of keeping Elvis’ music and memory alive. I like to see memories come back to life and create new ones for a younger generation by giving them a little glimpse of what it was like to see Elvis perform. Q. Favourite song to perform? A. It’s hard to pick just one because there are so many that I enjoy performing. I will say that ‘Jailhouse Rock’ holds a special place in my heart not only because it was the first song I ever performed, but it was also the song I sang when I won the title of Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist 2013 in Memphis, TN.

Q. Where is the most memorable venue you have performed in? A. On the Elvis Lives Tour, we were fortunate enough to perform in many wonderful, historical theatres, a few that even Elvis himself played! The coolest experience I have ever had was when I recorded Elvis’ entire Sun Studio’s catalogue actually in Sun Studio, right where he stood. It was an incredible feeling to say the least and something I am very proud and honoured to have done. Q. Will you have any down time to enjoy the Gold Coast while you are here? A. I hope to be able to enjoy the wonderful Australian sunshine. I am especially looking forward to going to Surfers Paradise Beach. I’ll be sure to wear plenty of sunblock when I do! Prepare to shake, rattle and roll when Dean Z and his crew take the stage on Thursday 14 - Saturday 16 July at Viva Surfers Paradise.

SURFERS PARADISE EDITION / 2016

FIVE MINUTES with TJ Cappola, Australia’s Number one Michael Jackson Tribute Artist! A. I am inspired by Michael Jackson’s showmanship and his ability to be in full control of an audience from start to finish of a show. His dancing, singing, humanitarian efforts and accomplishments in life inspire me to work hard and believe that anything is possible! Q. When did you realise you could sing and dance like him? A. It wasn’t so much a realisation that I could dance like him. I was just a 10-year-old kid dancing in front of the TV, mimicking every step. To me, that was my idea of fun. The singing came much later in life when I decided to make a career out of being a tribute artist. Q. Did you always know you would make a career out of being a Michael Jackson tribute artist? A. Never! I wanted to be a drummer playing in stadium rock bands, touring the world. My career as a Michael Jackson tribute artist fell into my lap by being in the right place at the right time, and knowing the right people. That’s what it comes down to in this industry. Not to mention working incredibly hard at your craft! Q. If you weren’t performing, what other career would you have? A. It would have to be something to do with music. Music has played such a large role in my life, I simply cannot imagine living without it. If I wasn’t performing I’d be writing, recording and engineering in a studio somewhere in the countryside isolated from the rest of the world. That would be cool. Q. What makes The King of Pop Show different to others? A. The King of Pop Show is a concert in dedication and honour to undoubtedly the world’s greatest entertainer to set foot on this planet. We are the first and only Australian Michael Jackson show to feature a live band and vocals together with the authentic choreography we all know so well. I strive to be authentic as it not only makes me a perfectionist but the true fans www.surfersparadise.com

appreciate it because at the end of the day, I am first and foremost, a HUGE Michael Jackson fan.

Q. What are you looking forward to most about bringing The King of Pop Show to Viva Surfers Paradise?

Q. How do you prepare before a show?

A. I am looking forward to giving the audience of Viva Surfers Paradise an authentic reproduction of what it may have been like to see the real Michael Jackson live in concert, especially for those who never had the chance to see the man at work.

A. I listen or watch a Michael Jackson concert consistently before a show. It always gets me pumped up and ready to unleash the beast on stage. Once the makeup and costumes are on I am no longer myself but a shadow of The King of Pop. Q. Favourite Michael Jackson song to perform? A. Such a hard question to answer but I’m leaning towards ‘Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’, ‘Dangerous’ and ‘Jam’. Q. What is the one song that is the crowd favourite, and gets everyone on their feet?

Watch TJ Cappola in action at Viva Surfers Paradise as he brings Australia’s one and only ‘live band’ tribute to Michael Jackson. The character, dance moves, and the music of Michael Jackson are brought to the stage with authenticity and dynamic showmanship. Visit surfersparadise.com for more information

A. That would easily be ‘Billie Jean’. It’s the song that everyone waits for because it involves the hat, glove, socks and of course the moonwalk. The Jackson 5 Medley we do is another crowd pleaser and it tends to get people up for a boogie! Q. What has been the most memorable performance for you so far? A. It was much earlier in my career but I performed as a special guest for the Countdown Reunion Concerts alongside Molly Meldrum at Rod Laver Arena in front of 15,000 people. That was surreal and nerve racking to say the least. More recently, the show performed to a sellout audience at Her Majesty’s Theatre Melbourne, which was a dream come true for myself and all involved. COVER STORY

The Staples

F

irst stop on your Saturday morning? Coffee of course. Or tea, whatever you prefer, because Surfers Paradise has both covered for you. Although we must confess, we are having a serious tea moment. Ever since CHA Tea Providores opened their doors at The 4217, the alluring scents of Oriental Spice and Earl Grey Blue Flower are drawing us into this heavenly shop, bedecked in calming whites and greens. If you’re a tea drinker from way back, you might think you’re already quite the tea connoisseur. Well step into CHA Tea and you’ll soon realise there are teas here you have never laid eyes on or dreamed of before! The black tea list will take you to the high altitudes of the Himalayan foothills with drops like the Darjeeling Second Flush, referred to as the ‘champagne’ of teas. The perfect way to start your day. The 4217 has injected some authentic and cultured eateries into Surfers Paradise of late, and along with CHA Tea, Salt Meats Cheese has become a staple for those who love everything Italian. True to its namesake, this gourmet Italian providore offers a divine selection of charcuterie meats and cheeses, selling carefully selected best-imported and local products. After your CHA tea, dine in at Salt Meats Cheese and enjoy a deli-inspired lunch of Classico Calzone, or any one of their woodfired pizzas. Salads, pastas and grazing boards are all there for your tasting pleasure and use a combination of authentic Italian produce and local ingredients.

And we can’t forget the coffee. For that we suggest heading to Black Coffee Lyrics, upstairs in 3131 on Surfers Paradise Boulevard. The full coffee range is there of course but it’s really all about the beans. Black Coffee Lyrics teamed up with Moonshine Coffee Roasters to produce their signature “Lyrics Blend”. The end result is a smooth and rich flavour that is perfectly teamed with their breakfast/lunch menu. From “The Boxer’s” meat loving mix (steak, bacon, mushroom, chorizo, tomato, relish, poached eggs and toasted Turkish bread) to the “Washington DC” (roasted pumpkin and semi-dried tomato with cashew nut cheese, rocket and pesto on wholegrain bread) Black Coffee Lyrics is the perfect pit stop for a hot coffee and sandwich to refuel and continue on with your day. With new and improved dining spots always popping up, Surfers Paradise is now home to some of the best contemporary cafés, bars and restaurants on offer. A food safari is only a short walk around town. 20 |

SURFERS PARADISE EDITION / 2016

The Attractions The term “6th Theme Park” was coined recently and it couldn’t be more accurate when it comes to describing the attractions in Surfers Paradise. There is a world of fun at your fingertips, and locals, we’re talking to you. You may not have experienced the traditional “tourist” spots before, but why wouldn’t you, when it’s right in your own backyard? Forget 3D, it’s all about the 7D Cinema experience. 7D cinema’s motto is “feel what you see” and it’s that simple. You are seated on a simulator platform that moves accordingly to what is happening on the screen as you watch any of the ten movies with interactive 3D glasses. At the same time over seven different special effects kick in to make the movie experience even more “real” and exhilarating. There are adventure movies, giving you those free fall feelings, kids movies for all the laughs, and not for the faint hearted, the scary movies. Be warned, you will feel like you are being chased! This is a movie-slash-ride experience with state-of-the-art simulators giving you the best in virtual reality technology. In fact, they say this is the only simulator in the world with unbeatable movements. If you’re not convinced, check out the testimonials on their website! Perfect for when the weather is cooling down, SkyPoint Climb is a must-do experience. Thrilling, captivating and breath taking, this climb lasts 90 minutes atop one of the Gold Coast’s most recognised landmarks – the iconic Q1 Resort & Spa building. Soaring 270 metres into the air, SkyPoint Climb is Australia’s highest external building climb and provides unparalleled 360-degree views of the Gold Coast and beyond. The climb is great fun with groups of friends, so make a day of it and enjoy the views with your crew at the top.

There are all the favourites in the mix too: Wax Museum, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, Slingshot and Vomatron … it’s all there, and it’s all within walking distance of each other. Who knew you were right in amongst the Gold Coast’s 6th Theme Park? www.surfersparadise.com

The Arts In front of Evandale Park is the cultural heart of the city, and at its base is the Arts Centre Gold Coast, a place that inspires, delights and captivates. Yes there are your regular mainstream movies, but step out of your comfort zone and get yourself a ticket to the ballet or a comedy show, or perhaps an international film, or even a youth play on the exploration of young Australian teenagers coping in modern society, and open your mind to the possibilities. The Arts Centre explores an array of genres and performance arts; it would be remiss to not explore them all. Kids shows are hugely popular here and every month you will find something to appeal to the little ones. Free events are often hosted outdoors at Evandale Park celebrating youth and the city’s diverse culture. Check out their website for all upcoming movies and shows – and be bold! Go and see something you would never have considered before. It could be life changing! Right here in Surfers Paradise, you can find original artwork by famed Aboriginal artists. The Spirit of Australia Gallery is more than just a shop front, venture inside and you will see original artworks by the likes of Walangkura Napanangka, Gloria and Jeannie Patyarre, Ronnie Tjampitjinpa and Abie Loy along with the more contemporary and modern aboriginal art of Yondee, Trisha

Mason, Colin Wightman and others. This place also has the biggest collection of didgeridoos on the Gold Coast. Over 200 authentic didgeridoos are on display and the gallery offers free didgeridoo lessons to customers who are willing to learn! For lovers of the unique, admire jewellery made of wood, bone, jade and an impressive collection of black, crystal, metrix and boulder opals mined from Cooberpedy, Alanrise and Opalville. A gallery that’s spearheaded the movement for showcasing Gold Coast artists, Urban Art Gallery is for those who want to be inspired by a city housing some serious local talent. Developed as a not-for-profit art gallery, Urban Paradise celebrates the work of emerging and established artists on the Gold Coast. A haven for seeking out truly original and contemporary work, this place is not for the academically recognised, rather it’s for those who may not have had the opportunity to seek formal training but are exceptionally talented and expressive. Much of the work is from those of ethnic descent, shedding some light into creative cultures. If you didn’t know about this humble gallery with so much to offer, now you do, so when you wake up Saturday morning and you’re sitting at a café overlooking the Surfers Paradise Beach, tick off a few art stops along the way. And in that moment, we won’t blame you for indulgently thinking to yourself, how much you love this surfside city of ours. SURFERS PARADISE EDITION / 2016

Coming Home “The stage is awash with bodies tumbling, lifting and clutching. Then, out of the darkness and gnawed by nostalgia, the Greek hero Ulysses appears after twenty long years of war and wanderings. Will he reach his faithful wife Penelope before she succumbs to her suitors?”

SURFERS PARADISE EDITION / 2016

IS THERE ANYTHING MORE POIGNANT IN THIS DAY AND AGE, THAN THE DEEP AND UTTER YEARNING FOR HOME? WHEN WE ARE CONSTANTLY SATURATED WITH NEWS ALL AROUND US OF DISPLACEMENT AND WAR ON A WORLD STAGE, THE WORD ‘HOME’ TAKES ON A NEW MEANING.

“It’s personal because Primo Levi’s account of returning from the innermost circle of hell that was Auschwitz only to land up in the vast expanse of the Russian steppe was tinged with the same crushing nostalgia, post-traumatic memory and cold hope that I heard beating at the heart of Monteverdi’s Il Ritorno D’Ulisse in Patria. It is only through the good fortune and the caprices of history that my family ended up in the sun of Australia rather than the fires of that evil and it is beholden on us to tell of it,” says Yaron. Circa has been under the direction of Yaron since its inception in 2004. The company has been touted many times since then as being at the frontier of “new circus”, a powerful form of circus art combining movement, dance, theatre and circus from multi-skilled circus artists. At the heart of Circa is a desire to push the boundary of circus art form and blur the lines of traditional performance art to create for the audience a show that is uniquely ‘Circa’. The result leaves a lasting impression - Yaron’s awardwinning works have been seen in 34 countries across six continents. Circa’s Il Ritorno is a retelling unlike anything you have seen before. Their world-renowned stripped-back acrobatics are fused together with baroque opera. And while some may consider opera for those with an acquired taste, Yaron says that this is part of the reason it should inspire you to experience it. “I love opera and have worked in it over the years. I have found its conservatism and poverty of imagination represent the worst sort of deadly theatre – atrophied, sclerotic and self-serving. Yet at its core, being in a room with a voice, communicating directly is deeply moving and necessary to our species.”

www.surfersparadise.com

In the same vain, Yaron has fought hard to ensure that his type of circus art is not reduced to simply entertainment – that it can be so much more. “For the past 17 years I have believed, naively, totally and to the embarrassment of many doubters that this genre of circus is a real art form. That it can express deep emotions and higher truths, that it can grapple with issues, exalt our spirits and touch our souls. Sadly, today it is constantly debased by the idea that it can only entertain.” Il Ritorno breaks it all down. Under masterful direction and an exceptional music collaborator, Quincy Grant, the show entertains, yes, but it challenges perceptions of traditional art form while telling an inherent human story in multiple layers. “We fashioned a world out of Monteverdi as a tale within a tale – surrounded by Mahler, folksong and Quincy’s own compositions. With our singers we asked them to sing across a style with a multitude of bodies and stagings around, over and in the middle of them. And with our acrobats we, as always, challenged them, to embrace the new, invest themselves and pursue what is vital and necessary”. The enduring original story of Ulysses (or Odysseus in its Greek form) never loses its appeal. Aside from its heroes and gods, the tale at its core is one that speaks to many of war and loss, of homecomings and hope. “The world today is seething with millions who wander the globe in search of home. It is haunted by the numberless ghosts of those who died in the horrors of war and genocide. It would be absurd to imagine that what we do, in a small room in Brisbane, can really make a practical difference. But I doggedly believe that when we challenge ourselves, when we make it personal, when we try and communicate difficult, inexpressible things and when we share them, raw, vulnerable and without the safety net of convention then we have continued to help a little to keep culture alive – culture which may be our only defence.” Il Ritorno shows at the Arts Centre Gold Coast from 26-27 August. P

erhaps that is why Circa’s new groundbreaking work, Il Ritorno, is so personal to Director Yaron Lifschitz. While the story is of classic antiquity and retells Claudio Monteverdi’s Il Ritorno D’Ulisse in Patria (The Return of Ulysses to his Homeland, an opera first performed in Venice in 1639) Yaron’s interpretation is told through the lens of Primo Levi’s post WW2 European displacement.

EVOLUTION OF

LONG STANDING ESTABLISHMENT AND ICONIC SURFERS PARADISE VENUE THE AVENUE MAKES THE BIG MOVE.

26 | PRECINCT MAGAZINE / Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast

SURFERS PARADISE EDITION / 2016

You would be hard pressed to find someone who has been trading in Surfers Paradise as long as Michael Russo has. Director of one of Surfers Paradise’s longest running venues, The Avenue, Michael remembers the days when the city was considered small and humble in comparison to other major cities that were booming around Australia at the time. Michael and his brother Vince, a DJ who worked for the famous Penthouse Nightclub back in 1987, saw an opportunity and seized it.

“S

urfers Paradise was like a country town back in those days, but it would come alive at night and The Penthouse was the place to be. Four floors of entertainment: restaurant, piano bar, speakeasy room, pool tables and a nightclub all in one. Men could only gain entry into the nightclub if they were accompanied with a lady, wore pants not jeans, wore shoes, no thongs or runners and a collared shirt,” Michael says.

The brothers are making the move after all this time, albeit not too far, and taking The Avenue directly across the road into The Mark building. The opportunities this presented for this long-standing institution outweighed any issues that a large move of this kind can create. But it was imperative to maintain the venue’s integrity; particularly a venue that has helped shape the Surfers Paradise nightlife and live music scene.

“Our focus has always been and will continue to be, quality product served in or on a quality container with friendly and professional service. The evolution of The Avenue across the road has just given us the opportunity to plan for the future in a way we could never have done at our present location. The new Avenue will not be just another bar in Surfers Paradise it will be a destination.”

“I joined Vince in 1983 after a stint of managing pubs in Sydney, and The Avenue was opened in 1984 originally as part of The Penthouse Nightclub.”

Since the early eighties, The Avenue has always adapted to its market and remained famous for its entertainment. Known for producing some of the best live music on the Gold Coast, The Avenue has always had a reputation for hosting some of the best local bands and international acts.

After spending a good part of a lifetime in Surfers Paradise, what has changed?

“The initial shock of The Avenue coming to an end in its current state was soon replaced with a sense of excitement and a breath of fresh air. We definitely did not want the iconic Avenue name or history to end. The process of creating a new venue that would live up to the reputation of the former Avenue began eight months ago with the appointment of Geoff Worthing, who is a creative genius.” www.surfersparadise.com

“The focus of live entertainment will always be a part of who we are. The new Avenue will also have a greater focus on food. We have a new world-class chef coming on board to enhance our current team. We have imported a Yakitori grill from Japan, a charcuterie cabinet, wood fired pizzas along with our share plate menu,” Michael says.

MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT

From the glamour days of The Penthouse to the launch of The Avenue, Michael and Vince have been operating on the same site for over 35 years. But all that is about to change.

“Surfers itself has developed into a bustling entertainment precinct, it’s not such a quiet little town anymore! We offer a huge diversity of dining options with over 270 restaurants in such a small area, and a nightlife, which has grown into a mecca for partygoers. On top of that, it has a friendly, laid back atmosphere.”

The fundamental aspects that have kept The Avenue so popular with locals will remain, but it’s certainly evolving beyond its original foundations. Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast / PRECINCT MAGAZINE

Life’s a Beach FIVE MINUTES WITH LOCAL BUSINESS OWNER ARTHUR DE SNOO The Surfers Paradise Beach Café has been operating since 2011. What has made the café so appealing? It has a great view, there is a large menu choice, and of course we have great staff. What do you think customers love most about the Beach Café?

What do you think makes Surfers Paradise so unique? The combination of the beach, shopping, restaurants and bars, nightlife, entertainment venues and the consistent events that are put on throughout the year.

Are there plans to expand businesses beyond two?

The perfect ocean view!

I have a passion for new projects and am continuously looking for new opportunities.

What sort of crowds do you attract?

If you could recommend the perfect day out for a tourist visiting Surfers Paradise, what would it be?

We offer a huge variety of meals: homemade pizza and pasta, fresh seafood, premium steaks and ribs, gourmet burgers and sandwiches. We have something on the menu for everyone. We have families, retirees, groups of young friends and couples come in and dine.

FOOD & LIFESTYLE

Given you are an established local, how has Surfers Paradise changed, in your opinion, over the years? The renovations and upgrades have had a very positive impact on the city. First there was the opening of Soul Boardwalk and the renovated Foreshore, and then it continued with the completion of G:link, which brings everyone with ease into Surfers Paradise. The renovation of Cavill Mall, Orchid Avenue and The Mark building more recently has also been great to see, as the city keeps evolving. All this brings exciting new businesses that look better and fresher and lift the offerings in the market. 28 |

What do you personally enjoy most about Surfers Paradise? I have been in the industry for 35 years and this is by far the best “office” I have ever had. I go to work every day and overlook the ocean and sand (and some days I spot a few whales in the distance!) all while sipping on fantastic coffee. You have recently opened a second business. Can you tell us a little about that - what can customers expect from this second location? Latitude 28 opened at the beginning of April in Cavill Mall. It has a typical, casual

First of all leave the car at home and take the G:link so you don’t have to worry about parking. Pick up a coffee at the Beach Café and go for a long stroll along the beach to get some fresh sea air. Follow that up with breakfast at the Beach Café Terrace with a nice fresh juice. Then pick up a surfboard or book surf lessons for the day. Pre-dinner drinks and dinner at Latitude 28 - Cavill Mall. And finish with a few nightcaps at one of the many spots on Orchid Avenue or on the riverside. For a young family, I would recommend visiting Ripley’s Believe It or Not and Timezone Surfers Paradise, or any other of the many entertainment venues that the kids would love! the basics are not basic here; the carefully sourced ingredients and flavours make for mouth-watering combinations. Take for instance The Proper Cheese & Toast: sourdough toast with smoked Byron Bay ham, mustard béchamel and melted vintage cheddar. That’s no doubt the proper way to eat a cheese toastie. For those looking for something more on the lighter side, The Spring Time Brekkie Salad or Herby Smashed Beets with creamy ricotta, chilli, lemon and fresh mint on sourdough will sing to you on a sunny autumn morning. FOOD & LIFESTYLE

Best New Restaurant Haven’t been to Brooklyn before? Well Surfers Paradise has the next best thing with Best New Restaurant winners Brooklyn Depot. From the outside, you’re in balmy Surfers Paradise, but walk a little further, and you’re in amongst the hustle and bustle of Brooklyn nightlife, lured in by the sounds of the smooth music, the smell of smoky grilling and the chattering of a crowd that gets louder and louder the further you venture in. Cognac-coloured wood, low lights and sprucely dressed bartenders with an array of spirits lining the walls behind them, set the scene. Now if you’re in Brooklyn, be prepared for some all-American eats. The Handcrafted Burgers are first up on the menu and with good reason. These burgers are not messing around. In honour of its namesake, the Depot Burger features two grass fed beef patties, double American cheese, hickory smoked bacon, grilled pineapple, lettuce and tomato for good measure and some Depot special sauce to top it off. The Wisenheimer of slow cooked pork belly, classic green apple slaw and truffle mayo gives you all the tastes of an American dinner in between two buns. And if “Hot Dawgs” are more your thing they have all the classics - and some with a twist - made with the Depot pork wiener. But go out on a limb and try the Bubba Gump Po’Boy with crispy crumbed prawns, and you have yourself a seafood hot dog that’s got all the flavours of the deep south. We should also mention their great range of salads too, like the Resolution Salad with grilled chicken, kale sofrito and Moroccan spiced polenta chips (with some other fresh ingredients in the mix) but we’re reserving our conservative food choices for the weekdays, thanks. Specialty cocktails will give you a taste of the big smoke, like the Rockefella Refresher, Liberty Bell, or the Fireball Fizz (Fireball Cinnamon Whiskey, apple juice, flamed cinnamon sugared apple and sparkling wine … definitely gives you some pep).

Best Bar Continuing your love affair with all things American, House of Brews took out Best Bar on the Gold Coast, a hotly contended spot considering the ample nightlife to choose from. So what makes House of Brews the winner? This taphouse and dining venue in the heart of Surfers Paradise has a huge selection of local and international craft beers featured on their unique 32 beer tap wall, not to mention their extensive wine, spirit and speciality cocktail list. The dark oak and chocolate leather tones of Brews beckons especially in the colder months, and a Grand Theft Espresso Jartini is just the cure, with Stolen Gold Rum, fresh espresso, Galliano Ristretto and agave syrup. The J’aime is a fresher hit of Belvedere vodka, cucumber, mint, ginger syrup and lemon juice. As for the menu, think American barbecue. Buffalo wings, sticky BBQ ribs, build your own beef brisket, classic burgers with the works, and an onion ring volcano tower dripping with truffle cheese sauce are what can be expected. Couple that with live music – a staple at House of Brews – featuring rock and solo blues artists playing from dusk until late evening, and you have game, set, match. House of Brews’ winning combination transports you to a New Orleans late night lounge bar, where you step in as the sun sets and leave once the sun is up.
