Read more from page 23 onwards on both these shows. And of course all the latest places to eat out including the newest venture from the Hurricane’s Grill & Bar team, who bring you smoky, wood fire rotisserie and grill goodness with their restaurant, Hurricane’s Wood Fire Grill, page 26. A special shout out to the quirky and soon-to-be-popular Crazy Cat Café! Yep, when this café opens you will be able to surround yourself with kitties, coffee and food, all at the same time. PRECINCT MAGAZINE / Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast
As summer fast approaches, the Gold Coast will be turning it up for its favourite season with blazing heat, sports on the courts and on the sand. NetFest’s ongoing success means there are three different event venues to watch teams battle it out, over 2,500 participants expected to be competing on the courts, and a taste of victory in the summer air.
N
etFest 2016 returns from 6-9 October with teams competing in over three locations, Surfers Paradise Beach, Hinterland Districts Netball Association and South Coast Netball Association, all conveniently within a 30-minute drive of each other. The registrations and demand to participate in this massive netball event is testament to how many people simply love netball – whether as a spectator or participant. “NetFest is Netball Australia’s largest participation event! It’s a fantastic sport for women, men and children to get involved with. It is an event for everyone and the perfect celebration of all things netball. Participants keep coming back, so that must speak for itself! With live events, social activities and plenty of sunshine, why wouldn’t you want to be playing at NetFest in October!” says Netball Australia’s Marketing Manager – Particpation, Bridget Lodge. Registrations are open every year for those aged 18 and over, with participants travelling from around Australia and New Zealand to compete in either traditional (outdoor) or beach netball tournaments. Anyone can be a part of NetFest; you can be a social or competitive netballer, woman, man, a netball newbie or an aspiring Aussie Diamond.
KIDS WEEK EDITION / 2016
“NetFest is all about having fun! There are divisions for all abilities and we encourage anyone looking for a great weekend of netball to register a team. If you wanted to give something other than the traditional game of netball a go, we also have a beach tournament with modified rules and fewer players on the court.” Yes there is a large focus on Netball, but the two-day event finals are really all about the atmosphere, fun and friendships that the event inspires, with NetFest hosting a range of social activities and live events that make it an all out Netball festival. “As in past years, we cannot wait for the Saturday night event, which is set to be bigger and better in 2016! There will also be a range of live sites at the venues for teams to relax and wind down; don’t miss some great setups from our event partners! We will also have options for the kids as well, with NetSetGO activities running during the day. With Fast5 Netball set to launch in 2017 and with the Fast5 World Series in late October, we will also be holding a range of scratch matches for people to jump in and get involved with. It is a quick hit of fit, guaranteed to keep you warm between matches, ” says Bridget. It’s the best time of year for netball lovers, and there is nowhere better than the Gold Coast to enjoy the stunning weather as the backdrop to the tournaments for the ultimate end-of-season trip. “The Gold Coast is the perfect location for NetFest! It’s iconic in what NetFest represents, a fun, great place to socialise, packed full of sporting events. It is the perfect hub to celebrate that end of season netball trip, or for families to have a great weekend away together.” If you want to size up the competition for next year, you can do so in comfort. At each traditional netball competition venue there is a live site that offers a range of food and beverage options, live music acts and retail stalls to keep you busy. Divisions will be nominated to a location which they will based at for the two-day round robin. Beach netball finals will be hosted on the Surfers Paradise foreshore, so if there is only one netball event you go to this year, grab a hat and some sunscreen and watch the finals … and perhaps we will see you on the courts in 2017!

Cocoon Ultra Lounge Bar & Dining
Howl At The Moon
Best for: Family dinners and casual lunches
Best for: Sunday sessions, champagne & bar menu bites
Best for: After work drinks, live entertainment & karaoke
With views over the Nerang River and Chevron Island, Helm Bar and Bistro aptly plays on its name and puts you right at the helm overlooking serene waters with sunsets on order every evening. Only difference being, you have a beverage in hand and an eclectic menu that combines casual classics with share plates and fresh seafood. The nautical fit out is not your usual cliché sea theme either. Instead, Helm ups the ante with a sleek and modern feel that cleverly captures ship features in pastel mints and blues, whites and woods. The open layout and floor to ceiling glass windows means you get to look out at the water from practically any area of the bar and bistro, but the outdoor deck seating is the obvious choice in the warmer months to make the most of the sun. In fact, nothing says Gold Coast summer more than a fresh bucket of prawns topped with lemon wedges onboard Helm’s deck. The menu is a nice in-between of what you would find at a friendly surfside club, just a little more gourmet. Chilled prawns, oysters, tempura soft crab, grilled salmon and more can all be served up on a wooden paddle for a seafood feast to share, while the more robust options from the smokehouse and chargrill menu will have you tucking into slow cooked beef brisket and hickory smoked pork ribs. The casual vibe of Helm sets the tone for a family dinner as well, and Pirate Pete’s Kids Menu caters nicely to the little ones. To really set the tone throughout the week, the bar is home to some of the best live music acts around. Couple that with some fruity custom cocktails that literally taste of summer, like the Strawberry Woo Woo or the Helm’s Tropics, and all aboard for a great evening. And if you’re a sports fiend and can’t bear the thought of missing out on any action on an afternoon out, pull up a stool and enjoy a range of sports showcased live on flat screens. Helm Bar & Bistro Surfers captures the best of a lazy summer day in an atmosphere that is both chic and familiar all at the same time.
Perched riverside on the end of Cavill Avenue, Cocoon delivers on the luxury party atmosphere complete with a red carpet on entry and decked with white day beds under the sun. Catching glimmers from the water, the rays reflect off the nearly all-white themed fit out. From the wooden white deck to the nest-like pendant lights resembling – you guessed it – silken cocoons, the atmosphere oozes a high-end island party on a balmy night. Book a day bed around sunset and stay and play for the rest of the evening in the Ultra Lounge, and you have yourself a perfect Sunday session. Carefully crafted cocktails and an extensive sparkling wine list caters to budgeters and big spenders alike, which is ideal because a bottle of bubbly definitely lends itself to the vibe of Cocoon. The dining menu has been simplified to share plates and Cocoon’s popular pizzas. The latter is lovingly put together by an Italian chef who has well and truly mastered the art of authentic pizza bases with quality toppings simplified in the best kind of way, like the Don Guiseppe with crushed Marzano tomato and oregano, black Kalamata olives, imported Spanish anchovies and Soppressata (Italian dry salami). Cocoon also pride themselves on their selection of share plates that can take you from Japan to Italy in a couple of bites and are designed for enjoying among friends steadily and continuously. It’s a collage of food favourites with Arancini balls hiding salty prosciutto and oozing Brie Parmesan cheese, to the well-loved chicken karage served with Japanese mayonnaise and a squeeze of lemon. Classy vibes, great drinks and delicious bites – this is one cocoon you won’t want to leave.
Alfresco dining, sunbeds, a delicious tapas menu designed by Guy Grossi, world-class live entertainment and a spot of karaoke, and you’ll be howling at the moon along with the rest of them by the end of a long working week. Surfers Paradise was in need of a let-your-hair-down-and-sing kind of venue, and Howl At The Moon has delivered with a location that is both quintessentially Surfers Paradise yet new and exciting at the same time. Right on the river, Howl captures the open air vibes and takes it indoors. The atmosphere is akin to stumbling upon a vibrant, tucked away bar while holidaying in the Greek Islands. Two grand pianos set the scene, with the piano players encouraging full participation from willing patrons. Book the private karaoke rooms in advance and let the fun times begin, and if you need some Dutch courage first, then a visit to the custom cocktail menu will assist. The Coconut and Banana Tiki with Captain Morgan’s spiced rum, banana liqueur, coconut water and lime is like summer swimming on your taste buds. The carefully crafted tapas menu keeps you coming back for more, with fresh ingredients married simply for the best kind of combinations. The BBQ Moreton Bay Bugs infused with lemon oil and black salt, the 15-hour slow cooked pork sliders with slaw on seeded buns, and the calamari seasoned with pineapple and chipotle aioli are just some of the share platters that you can sink your teeth into in between songs. It’s riverfront entertainment, inhibition free, so let out the inner wolf.

AT HER FINGERTIPS It’s no wonder then, that the girl from the small town of Forbes and adopted home of Sydney is accruing such a huge following. With her tracks being played on alternative and well-loved radio station Triple J, and ‘Hold’ peaking at number five on the US Spotify viral top 50 chart and number one on the Australian viral 50 chart, she is destined for big things. Vera Blue, real name Celia Pavey, cut her teeth as a folk artist before finding her feet as a singer and then an acoustic guitarist (the multi-talented artist plays the violin too). It seems now, she has well and truly come into her sound mixing the music she’s long loved with lush, sultry electronica. The results are sometimes gentle, sometimes hard-hitting, but always show stopping with her commanding vocals front and centre. “I’ve always wanted to create something that’s a blend of folk and cool, heavy, thick sounds,” she says. “This is the music I have been wanting to make and I feel like I’m unleashing.” Like many talents to re-emerge under a fresh moniker, Celia Pavey had already released a folk-inspired album The Music, which peaked at number 14 on the Australian ARIA Charts in 2013, before making herself known to a wider audience www.surfersparadise.com
and placing third in season two of The Voice. Her otherworldly sounds seemed destined to debut in a less commercial arena and in 2015 she released music under her new project ‘Vera Blue’. Fingertips has been hugely successful already, with all eight dates of her first headline tour selling out around the country. Her second tour is commencing in August through to October, hitting metropolitan and regional cities. Listening to her live has been described as “an extraordinary experience” by The Music.com.au and Speaker TV said “through the mist of smoke from the smoke machines and a stage lit in blue, emerged Australia’s most exciting young voices.”
VERA BLUE PERFORMS AT ELSEWHERE BAR, SURFERS PARADISE ON FRIDAY, 9 SEPTEMBER.
‘Hold’, off the five-track EP, captured the attention of the industry and fans instantly. “This song is about finding someone who pulls you out of a dark place,” she explains. “It’s about when you’ve opened your heart so many times to people and you finally find that person who is there to protect you, to look after you, even when you’ve hurt them and they’ve hurt you. You never give up on them.” Written together with veteran producers Andy and Thom Mak and Melbourne songstress Gossling, ‘Hold’ marries acoustic guitar with piano, production and Vera Blue’s unashamedly intimate song writing. “I’m at the age where I’m writing about what’s happening to me, the things that I’ve been through, the people that surround me and everything in my life,” she says. “I can’t make things up, it has to be honest.”

E
thereal is a word that can be overused when it comes to describing the sound of an artist, but it’s hard to avoid it when listening to the transcendent music of Vera Blue. Her voice is unique, strong and blissfully smooth, and her debut single ‘Hold’ off her EP, Fingertips, is simply bewitching. So while it’s a word that can describe aspects of her sound, it certainly doesn’t sum it up. In fact, there are many rich layers to Vera Blue’s music that are seamlessly tied together by her sincere song writing.
The outcome is powerful and pure. With much more to come from Vera Blue, she well and truly has the world at her fingertips, and a voice to lure it in. Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast / PRECINCT MAGAZINE

THE ENDURING MAGIC OF THE
Nutcracker C
lara kneels down in despair as darkness descends on the stage following the bitter battle between the Nutcracker and the Mice King. After it’s over, the Nutcracker has been transformed back into a prince … but what now? Cue the Sugar Plum Fairy, emerging from the wings in a glittering display, transporting Clara and the Prince to a land of magic full of the most exotic sweets from all over the world …. The Nutcracker is a ballet industry phenomenon. Given its premier at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg on a Sunday in 1892, on a double bill with Tchaikovsky’s opera Iolanta, no one foresaw at the time the legacy it would inspire. While Tchaikovsky’s 20-minute suite was instantly recognised for its genius, the ballet production itself was not a success. Fast-forward to over a century later, The Nutcracker is a ballet that has been performed countless times by all the major companies in the world, and it never fails to draw the biggest audiences.
Traditionally performed around Christmas, The Nutcracker will be taking to the stage once more, performed by the Imperial Russian Ballet Company who return to Australia following their sell-out 2015 performances of Swan Lake. While the Christmas season won’t have officially begun, the celebrated cast of the IRB will no doubt stir that festive feeling in one of their most favoured ballets. Joined by children from local ballet schools in the cities they perform in around the world, this special touch only enhances the connection The Nutcracker has with the limitless imagination of children and their ability to bring the magic of these myths to life, by sheer belief. Whether it’s Tchaikovsky’s score, the dazzling skill of the dancers or the familiar story that compels you, enjoy getting lost in a performance by one of the ballet world greats and experience the enchantment of The Nutcracker.
What is it about this ballet that is so appealing? Is it the vibrant costumes? The breathtaking backdrops? The musical score accentuated by those famous inflections? Or the story itself and the magic it awakens?
Perhaps this underlying rite-of-passage is the current that turns The Nutcracker from a fanciful display of exquisite costumes and flawless dance, into a ballet that is both poignant and permanent. One that can be seen time and again by nostalgic adults and a new generation of excited children. www.surfersparadise.com

It could be all these things that have made The Nutcracker so enduring, but a more interesting theory is its psychosocial appeal to kids – especially girls. Behind the myth (the original story was written by E.T.A. Hoffmann who based it on an ambiguous German folk legend, and it’s been adapted and changed many times over since then) there is a coming-of-age story. A first love, a realisation that there is good and bad, that bravery can be called upon unexpectedly, that childhood becomes adulthood quickly and often without awareness.

DIRTSONG A NATION CHANTS, BUT WE KNOW YOUR STORY ALREADY. - From the novel Carpentaria, Alexis Wright
A
story we are told often, but have we heard it? When Alexis Wright’s epic novel Carpentaria emerged in 2007, it spoke in a voice that would have been unfamiliar to many. Dominant yet informal, the novel transformed the oral tradition of Australia’s indigenous people into a narrative where time was not linear, where magic realism drifted in and out of a recognised story about Aboriginal life. We had heard this tale in many forms, and this was another. But it came direct from an indigenous voice, a voice that often used parody humour and an eccentric cast of characters to convey what so many others had failed to do: experience Aboriginal life and the dispossession of ancient Aboriginal lands. The novel went on to win the Miles Franklin Award in 2007 but its legacy has remained over the years; one such outcome of this legacy is its inspiration behind the production Dirtsong featuring Black Arm Band. Set against a backdrop of stunning moving images and text, Dirtsong is a showcase of songs in 11 different Aboriginal languages, inspired by the words of Alexis Wright. The songs are performed by some of Australia’s most extraordinary talents and backed by an ensemble of the country’s finest musicians. It is more than that though, it is a deeply moving experience that takes you on a musical journey throughout Australia’s cultural heartland. It explores the connections between people, language and land, much like the novel itself. In exploring these connections, Dirtsong lifts the spirit and takes from Carpentaria a theme that binds us all together in the darkest hours, hope. The West Australian described Dirtsong “as an uplifting experience that said more about black and white solidarity than a million parliamentary speeches.” The arts have a way of breaking through the politics, even in the heaviest of climates. The talented ensemble of Dirtsong are from Black Arm Band, a collective of renowned indigenous singers, musicians, performers and actors from across Australia dedicated to showcasing and celebrating the very best of contemporary Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander music, culture, experience and identity. Their motto is celebrating the past and revolutionising the future of indigenous Australia through music. They uphold that notion through their widely acclaimed distinctive music theatre performances, merging indigenous music, culture and language and uniquely powerful visual imagery.
ARTS & CULTURE
It is a musical tradition that has been forged over 40 thousand years and its history permeates through the performance, drawing a map of Australia in music that charts the cultural and linguistic diversity of the country. Dirtsong does not simply reinforce or affirm cultures and traditions; it also actively creates them. Many of the songs featured in Dirtsong are new commissions. Listen to this proud story, take the journey through Aboriginal Australia. It may be the first time you really hear it.

It’s the newest casual dining experience to hit Surfers Paradise – exciting, progressive, and of course, delicious.
The latest venture from the already successful Hurricane’s Grill and Bar chain, the chic new opening of Hurricane’s Wood Fire Grill on Circle on Cavill was all about drawing on 20 years of experience to offer a new style in restaurant bar and take away. “We wanted to introduce our customers to a new style of cooking and flavours while maintaining our well loved favourites,” says General Manager Dean Greenwood. This hunger for innovation is in part what has made Hurricane’s restaurants a hot spot among locals. “We attribute our success to a strong staff culture, being well established in the community, and constant experimentation with menu items. We are always listening to customer feedback and engaging with suppliers to ensure we receive premium quality produce.” The end result is a mouth-watering menu that is robust and contemporary yet completely casual. “Our signature dishes have remained, some classic dishes have been given a modern update with new cooking techniques, and a Portuguese influence has been introduced. The state of the art wood fire grill gives a unique smoky flavour and caramelises beautifully.” So far, there have been firm favourites off the menu. “The four-hour wood fired suckling pig, crushed potatoes with olives, semidried tomatoes and feta and homemade condiments and crackling, and the slow cooked lamb shoulder with minted peas and goats cheese along with our signature ribs and grass fed Cape Grim steaks from Tasmania are always popular choices.” Of course the menu offers a lot more than the signature flame grill and rotisserie items, www.surfersparadise.com
and the burgers are a definite contender for best on the coast, with combinations like crispy duck, onion jam, pickles and lettuce, or the smoky grass fed beef with crispy onion rings, cheddar, beetroot, bacon, lettuce and mayo. For those more inclined to a fish and veggie diet, have no fear, you can get your fish done on the wood fire grill too (like the King Prawns with ginger coconut and lime dressing) or the veggie stuffed field mushroom, tomato, lettuce and herb yoghurt burger. If you prefer a night in, all burgers are available for take away. The food is why you go, but the atmosphere is why you’ll stay. The modern yet rustic feel of the place offers two bars, a dining area and an outdoor seating area that will see you in a booth below overhanging greenery or on higher tables closer to the bar. The cocktail bar showcases a great selection of wines and spirits plus some very easyto-drink signature cocktails using freshly squeezed juices from the juice bar. “I would recommend the Tasmanian Touch, with fresh pomegranate, 666 Pure Tasmanian Vodka and hibiscus syrup muddled with fresh lime,” says Dean. Hurricane’s Wood Fire Grill has already garnered the support of Gold Coasters and is proving a popular jaunt for after work drinks, celebrations and families. “We have loyal locals, and the fact that the Gold Coast is a buzzing holiday destination with a huge range of events throughout the year has really made Surfers Paradise the ideal location for the new Hurricane’s venture.” The thriving chain have also just completed a refurbishment of their bar in Hurricane’s Grill and Bar at Soul on The Esplanade, complete with a tropical theme and a new cocktail list and bar menu to enjoy right in time for summer.

Cat lovers, welcome to the Gold Coast’s first cat café!
“We like to think of ourselves as their guardians, and the visitors can be their ‘owners’ when they come in. They are free to play with them, brush them, cuddle them or just watch TV with them. They have been brought up as kittens in this environment, so we know they are super friendly,” says co-founder Jackie. Gold Coast locals and best friends Jackie and Neil dreamed up the idea of a Gold Coast cat café after Neil visited his homeland of Scotland and enjoyed his first cat café experience there. Since then, the idea to bring the concept home has turned into a reality with Crazy Cat Café set to open soon on Surfers Paradise Boulevard. “The attraction is to provide kitty companionship to cat lovers or a chance to see the friendliest breeds all in one location to help you decide which one will be your newest addition to your family. We have even rehomed three kitties! And you will reap the therapeutic rewards that feline companionship is proven to provide, all within a stunning but peaceful setting, with delicious treats and beverages on offer to ‘purrfectly’ compliment the experience!” The cat lounge has comfy couches, beanbags and free Wi-Fi so you can bring your laptop to work or to study in the company of some feline friends. For food hygiene reasons, the kitchen and café area are separated from the cat lounge by double doors. All food and drinks are prepared in a 100% cat-free environment and are all available for dine-in or take away. You do have the option to take food and drink into the cat room for your visit if you wish! So yes, you can sit and read comfortably, cat on lap, while sipping on a coffee! “It is known that interacting with a cat can lower stress levels and produce feel good chemicals in your body. It could be the satisfied purr of a cat when you are snuggling up to it in the right way. Everyone loves their interaction with cats for their own reasons,” says Jackie. Child or adult, the kitty haven is available to all – so long as kids are supervised at all times – all ages can reap the benefits of some much needed cat time. If you are seriously in the market for a cat, a pit stop to the café is essential to get to know some popular breeds and help you make a decision.
www.surfersparadise.com
“We thought about if someone wanted a specific breed of cat, where could someone go and see them, fully grown and socialised in a public area. We then decided to run the café as a hybrid with some rehomed cats, as well as pedigreed cats. This gives anyone who is looking for a cat an honest view of the types of cats that are available, and how a specific breed may suit their lifestyle. “The beauty about having a number of different breeds is that one of the cats will be in the mood for doing what you want to do. If you want to laugh and play, the Ragdolls, Bonnie and Clyde, and the Abyssinians, Tom and Jerry, are all over that. If you want a cuddle and a smooch, Savvi the Birman and Jimmy Cat are your cats!” While the focus is all about the resident companions, Jackie and Neil have put in as much effort into the ‘café’ as the ‘cat’ aspect, and customers can expect beautifully sourced coffee and produce, including the Australian Certified Organic ‘Org’ coffee, a specialist blend, sourced from a supplier in Burleigh. “It has a rich and toasty, caramel sweet aroma, powerful, dark chocolate notes, hints of cabernet fruit with a lovely light syrupy finish. We had a tasting with lots of different types of coffee, and this coffee came out as the unanimous choice. We will be the only supplier of this coffee in Surfers Paradise, which will give the coffee lovers in the area a new and exciting choice,” says Jackie. Alongside the coffee, Jackie and Neil are working with local bakers to ensure the sweet and savoury selections match the outstanding coffee and beverage selections. With a perfect location in the Centre Arcade on Surfers Paradise Boulevard, the café is already generating interest from locals eager to enjoy its kitty comforts. “The location shouted at us due to the large windows for the cats to sunbathe. We are on the tramline too, to help encourage locals to use the tram for a day out to come and play or chill with the kitties. We wanted to bring this café into the heart of the Gold Coast, because we personally enjoy the lifestyle, weather and all the amazing people we have in our lives here.” If you have a great business idea, Jackie and Neil have some advice. “Plan it well, one step at a time and do your due diligence. Don’t be scared, you only live once, so follow your dreams. After all what’s there to lose, nothing that can’t be regained.” The Crazy Cat Café, opening soon 63-64 Centre Arcade 3131 Surfers Paradise Boulevard, Surfers Paradise, QLD 4217

elcome to Slice Virtual Golf, the newest virtual experience to hit Surfers Paradise. Whether you’re a golf aficionado or the term ‘Double Bogey’ sounds like something slightly weird or potentially sinister to you, Slice Virtual Golf is an experience that beginners and pros can both enjoy. You get to practice your swing in a high tech virtual environment without the walking, the buggies or the waiting around. In between shots, the fully licensed bar keeps you nicely occupied along with their one-metre pizzas. That’s right, onemetre long pizzas but more on that further on … Slice Virtual Golf uses the world’s leading golf simulators to play on the most renowned golf courses around the world, using real clubs and real balls. You simply hit a regular golf ball into a silent screen on which a video projector displays the image of the course and hole. Once the ball has been hit into the screen, a simulated ball flight takes over, showing you the ball’s flight journey and where it lands. Too much tech? That’s ok, just grab the squad and check it out for yourself, you will soon get the swing of things! Now, more on those metre long pizzas. That’s 100 x 30 centimetres of a doughy, hot base slathered in house-made sauce and finished with toppings like the Yankee-style hot dogs, bacon, double smoked ham, caramelised onion and melted cheese (that’s the Tiger Hot Dog Pizza, for the record). You get 32 generous slices in the metre-long, but pizzas are also available by the quarter and half-metre in case you’re feeling ‘conservative’.
MUSIC & ENTERTAINMENT
Golf, pizza and beer are best experienced in groups and Slice Virtual Golf accommodates with a great selection of packages that range anywhere from eight to 64 players (a great option for those considering work Christmas party ideas).
