Welcome Note

T

he team at Precinct are proud to be bringing you this special issue in anticipation of Surfers Paradise’s celebration of all things art, culture, music and food – the 2015 Surfers Paradise Festival.

But first – Sneaky Sound System. Our cover stars are well trained in the art of getting-you-out-of-your-seat-to-dance. The Australian dance music group’s hit songs are simply contagious. You would remember their self-titled breakout album from 2007 with songs like “I Love it” and “UFO”, and more recently their 2013 track "Really Want to See You Again" from their Aria nominated album (for Best Dance Release) From Here to Anywhere. Sneaky Sound System sat down with Precinct to talk music ahead of their Surfers Paradise LIVE show – a first of its kind in the precinct. This three-day music event will be held across three stages within Surfers Paradise, offering a vibrant program of live music. Artists confirmed for Surfers Paradise LIVE include Phil Jamieson Trio, Timberwolf, Sun City, Kite Machine, Mason Rack Band and many more. Sneaky Sound System’s interview is on page 6, and all the details of Surfers Paradise LIVE can be found on page 34. With the Surfers Paradise Festival around the corner, this issue is all about the celebration of artistic expression and the diversity of cultures in this beach paradise, and how the city of the Gold Coast is stepping up to the plate in its honour of the arts. In saying that, who better to talk arts and culture with than Robyn Archer AO, the Gold Coast Strategic Advisor, Arts and Culture. Enjoy her interview on page 14. And to really bring home the message of art flourishing in Surfers Paradise, flip to page 17 and take a peek into the newly opened Urban Paradise Art Gallery, a safe and encouraging space for emerging local artists. You will, of course, have noticed the Festival Program on the back. As the Surfers Paradise 2015 festival descends on us once again, we anticipate bigger performances, high-energy shows and unforgettable experiences for the whole family. All the details for this year’s festival are right here, we simply await your attendance! Until next time … Precinct Team

Sneaky Sound System Sneaky Sound System’s musical prowess certainly isn’t as sneaky as their name.

T

his electrifying dance-music duo has long made up a significant part of Australia’s popular music scene, and since their formation in 2004, vocalist Connie Mitchell and producer phenomenon ‘Black Angus’ McDonald have taken their addictive dance rhythms and powerful performances all around the world. Sneaky Sound System have achieved great things on the Australian and international music charts, including record-breaking positions in the Hottest 100, three Platinum certifications for their debut album Sneaky Sound System, and a handful of ARIA Awards. Sneaky Sound System are touching down on our shores to headline Surfers Paradise LIVE, a brand new music event set over three massive days along the Surfers Paradise Foreshore. Precinct Magazine caught up with Connie and Angus in the lead up to LIVE.

cover story

1. What has Sneaky Sound System been up to since the start of the New Year? We’ve been head down in our studio putting the finishing touches on our forthcoming releases – we’ve got an album worth of stuff, so it’s been an exciting time at Sneaky HQ. 2. Since From Here To Anywhere , has your musical direction taken any unexpected turns or developments? We’ve taken may turns over the past few years. We collaborated on some more underground stuff, wrote some tunes for some big US guys/girls (which will hopefully be released one of these days), and after doing a lot of touring through America, we almost got talked into going down the dreaded commercial EDM path. Thankfully we’ve taken our time and written and produced some new material we’re very proud of that is more in line with our DNA. 3. During your most recent From Here To Anywhere tours, you played at some amazing international venues in major

cities like Seoul, Berlin and Ibiza. What were some of those crowds/places like? In one word … awesome. It’s always such a buzz playing to people on the other side of the world that relate to your music. Those three places are so very different, but music is such a powerful thread that it can tie us all together. 4. What is it like filming video clips in another country? What character or style does a foreign city lend to the overall video clip? We really like it because you have people who look at things from a different angle. We’ve done a few videos in London because it has some of the most creative and cool talent on the planet. We did one in Las Vegas on 16mm film with an amazingly professional gang from LA, and one in Tokyo which has got to be one of the best back drops you can get – you

just need to walk through the city. Being somewhere else always gives things a little extra spice. 5. Of all your songs on From Here To Anywhere , which is your favourite to perform live? Big. It has been a slow burner that tune – it’s a big moment at all of our shows, excuse the pun. 6. Which elements of your musical development and journey have taught you the most? Touring, winning awards, being at home? There have been lessons aplenty. A friend gave us some advice right at the start of the Sneaky journey, he said: “it’s gonna be like you’re pushing a boulder up a hill, and if you stop pushing it will roll over you – you can never stop”. He was right, it’s a never-ending journey with all sorts of twists and turns, ups and downs – you just keep on learning and listening and creating and having fun.

thankfully we’ve taken our time and written and produced some new material we’re very proud of that is more in line with our DNA.

COVER STORY

7. In which kind of environment does the creative juice flow? Where’s your creative space? The main creative space is in our heads. We always have our antennas up ready to catch inspiration or ideas – they can come from anywhere at anytime, you just have to be aware. Then mostly we nut out our ideas in our studio in Bondi Beach or on a laptop in some hotel room. 8. Sneaky Sound System is quite active on social media. What are your views on the way social media has influenced the music industry? It’s pretty cheesy and base level but what are you gonna do, it’s here to stay? It can be done well and some people have exploited it very well, but for the most part it has reduced us to the most lame people on earth. 9. Connie, you’ve collaborated with some of the world’s biggest hip-hop stars, including Jay-Z, Kanye West and Beyoncé, for Jay Z and Kanye’s album Watch The Throne. What was it like working with these artists? They work

www.surfersparadise.com

so hard, they don’t stop. Their success is no fluke. They’re constantly working. Kanye was working until he caught a plane home. He took a power nap for 10 minutes, he’d wake up, listen to what you’d done and go, “That bit, that bit, that bit, do more like that.” OK. This was 6.00am, I’d been there since 9.30pm. It was amazing to be in a room with people at their level. It cements the fact that this is what you should be doing. They’re so incredibly respectful. I was quite honoured. All of them were happy to sit there and watch me sing for hours. 10. This year, which bands have you been listening to? Loving Caribou’s latest album and essential mix, we also brought out Poolside from LA for our New Year’s day party so have been lis-

tening to their amazing collections of old soul and disco, also lots of jazz – Art Blakey, Billie Holiday and Lester Young, Don Drummond, and of course a healthy dose of techno and house music. It’s always a mixed bag for us. 11. What can your Gold Coast fans expect from your gig at Surfers Paradise LIVE? We’ll play a few new ones but of course we’ll be playing all the favourites. We never plan our show in advance so we’ll be doing what we normally do, and that’s playing it by ear – going where the crowd takes us. And on the Goldie that’s usually full steam ahead. 12. What can we expect from Sneaky Sound System in the not-too-distant future? Lot’s of new music and a new live show later in the year. Can’t wait.

The old razzle dazzle

G

et ready to be entertained the good old-fashioned way, with entertainers using their fearless energy and incredible talent up-close-and-personal on the streets in a bid for your attention. The Australian Street Entertainment Championships will kick start the Surfers Paradise Festival in 2015. For four days over the Easter long weekend, holidaymakers and local residents will be treated to an eclectic mix of performances from Australia’s leading street entertainers across areas of music, dance, magic and comedy. The busy streets of Surfers Paradise will turn into a stage – four stages to be exact, along the foreshore and Cavill Mall – from which to dazzle and delight enthusiastic crowds of passers-by. The performers will stop at nothing to draw smiles, laughs, gasps and applause from their audience. High energy keeps these entertainers going all day! Of course, it wouldn't be as entertaining without a little healthy competition. Featuring seasoned professionals and younger start-outs, the latter will have a chance to win cash prizes for the best performances, with the public voting on which acts will compete in the Monday afternoon final located at the Hanlan Street Beach Volleyball amphitheatre. So hold on to your hats until your favourite act, because finalists will be relying on the volume of your applause to get them through.

The silver screen “I don’t dream at night. I dream all day; I dream for a living” – Steven Spielberg. The Gold Coast's biggest short film festival is back as part of the Gold Coast Film Festival (GCFF) and Surfers Paradise Festival, with SIPFest (Shorts in Paradise). SIPFest is a celebration of short film, which is perhaps the starting point for all filmmakers big and small, who dare to dream. Emerging filmmakers from all over Australia have the opportunity to showcase their talent behind (or in front) of the camera with the aim of having their film screened at the festival, for your viewing pleasure. With only ten films selected to be screened, each with a maximum duration of ten minutes, the competition is tight. The categories for competition include Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Audience Choice. The diverse mix of films that make up the GCFF SIPFest include thrillers, dramas, comedies, documentaries, animations, and more, with a panel of industry experts on site to judge the films and award over $2,000 in prizes to competing filmmakers. This year, SIPFest will be held in the Festival Pavilion, the perfect setting to appreciate the silver screen.

public, and this could be done, for instance, by the inclusion of arts and culture in tourism and other campaigns. Which characteristics of the city are you excited to work with? We (and by that I mean the Arts and Culture unit of the City of Gold Coast) are already working intensely at many levels to strengthen and expand the cultural landscape of this city and region. The Council agreed to support a lift in funding and governance arrangements for BLEACH* and I am enjoying working with Artistic Director, Louise Bezzina in growing that festival to become a Gold Coast-wide platform for local artists. But there’s so much more than this – a new contemporary dance company is currently being established on the Gold Coast – The Farm. We are looking into contemporary music, film, design and, of course, the visual arts scene is fresh and expansive. The Arts and Culture unit has already conducted a number of weekends where I have been able to advise national experts to come in to mentor and begin the process of up-skilling local artists and increasing their ambition.

Robyn Archer on Culture & Surfers Paradise

I

f you pride yourself on your diehard attendance to some of the country’s best art festivals, then likely you’ll be familiar with the career of Robyn Archer AO.

A brief roll call of her past credentials includes Artistic Director of Tasmania’s 10 Days on the Island, Artistic Director of the Adelaide Festival and Melbourne International Arts Festival, and the Light in Winter, Melbourne. And this is only a handful of her artistic director positions in the last decade. In May last year, Robyn was appointed City of Gold Coast’s Strategic Advisor, Arts and Culture, to spearhead the city’s major arts and cultural development plans in the lead up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games. We had a chat with Robyn about her new artistic role in the sun and surf capital. In terms of Australian cities, how does the Gold Coast scale as a cultural hub? Traditionally, the Gold Coast has been viewed as a leisure spot, and this is still reinforced in interstate and international promotion – sun, surf, and theme parks. But we all know that there’s much more to the Gold Coast than that. I would suggest that a growing number of people are now aware of the cultural ambitions of this city. The next step will be to extend this awareness beyond the cultural community to the general

14

Precinct Magazine / Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast

And across all this is the attention being paid to local Indigenous culture. That is one of the main pillars of the Arts and Culture Strategy, and very exciting. You’ve worked with and created some of the country’s most renowned international art festivals. What do you think the key differences are between working in a city like Melbourne or Adelaide and the Gold Coast? Adelaide has had an international arts festival for more than fifty years, and now has a sophisticated arts audience to cater for. Melbourne has a very dense year-round cultural program and a wealth of cultural venues. Therefore, it is hard to compare those cities with the Gold Coast, which has evolved as an R&R hub. But what the Gold Coast lacks in city infrastructure and audience education towards art it makes up for with its excitement and potential of a new frontier opening. There’s all the difference in the world in terms of the way you work and what you need to achieve in those very different territories. What parts of the Gold Coast lifestyle and geography have shaped its interpretation of and approach to art? The geography and lay-out of any city has a lot to do with the way culture operates in that city. One of the clear aspects of the Gold Coast is its long coastal strip – the ‘string of pearls’, a series of villages, including the hinterland, each with its own distinct characteristics. This has led to small pockets of arts and culture breaking out everywhere, but separated and often unknown to each other. One of the things the fresh approach is doing is to bring artists together, to let them see themselves as a larger com-

munity than they realise, and open up opportunities for collaboration. The development of the Cultural Precinct should also assist in this process of unification. How important do you think the arts and culture development will be for local artists and performers? Artists are already recognising that there’s something sparking up here and the conversation is turning to ‘this could be a good place to be in coming years’. Many artists here have already taken up the new offers and are developing new works in response. There’s a huge amount going on and this energy will become more and more evident as projects evolve. Why are events like the Surfers Paradise Festival important for communities and the development of a city? Anything that gets people out and enjoying live arts and entertainment is good for locals (for social cohesion, and things like mental and physical health) and clearly good for local business. This applies to many events on the Gold Coast. I would throw out the challenge to all those events, if they want to develop beyond just very local use, to bring fresh ideas and a unique profile into the mix. The future of the city depends very much on a stream of creativity which breeds a fresh approach and is the secret to its long-term success. How important will Surfers Paradise be in the Gold Coast artistic strategy, given it is the touristic and international hub? Surfers Paradise is an iconic name, and very much tied to the Gold Coast’s evolution. It needs to be part of the Gold Coast’s future, not only in its own right, but also as the most populous hub for those going to the new Cultural Precinct. The light rail stops right there, and the development of a walkable cultural corridor to the Cultural Precinct is currently being considered. There’s massive potential in Surfers, and if it can flag the Gold Coast’s future cultural richness, that will make a huge contribution. At the moment, there’s sun, surf, accommodation and retail, but its capacity for adding more arts and cultural content is unlimited and absolutely vital. I’m sure there are already many national and international visitors who would lap up the arts and culture that the Gold Coast offers, and will offer more of in the future. In terms of live performance and dance, what can people expect to see on the Gold Coast in the next coming years? A lot more!

BLEACH* FESTIVAL is an Arts and Cultural Festival that has been running from 6-22 March. To check out the remaining events, visit bleachfestival.com.au and watch this space for news on Bleach Festival 2016.

Artist’s PARADISE

For those who thought Surfers Paradise only held vacancy for beach babes and camera-swinging travellers: be warned. This corner of paradise is for the lovers of concrete and canvass, of art with an edge, and those who want to see a different side of the city. Welcome to Urban Paradise Art Gallery, and prepare to be cultured.

Arts & Culture

Urban Paradise Art Gallery Surfers Paradise is evolving and making its way into more city-centric endeavours, and what better way to celebrate its initiation into urban-hood than to visit one of the galleries spearheading the movement. Created as a non-profit contemporary art gallery suited to the buzz of the city, Urban Paradise Art Gallery seeks to celebrate the work of emerging and established artists on the Gold Coast, as well as provide an inspiring urban space for locals to connect and conceptualise. French artist Frederic Berjot is the brain behind Urban Paradise, and as a contributor to the Gold Coast art scene for ten years, he knew exactly how to awaken the community’s senses to local talent. The gallery not only provides a space for budding local artists to exhibit new works, but also to learn about the business side of art, including how to manage exhibitions and deal with curators and buyers. Essentially, the gallery is for art brut, which is the French meaning of ‘Outsider Art’. This type of art is created by artists who are not academically recognised and who haven’t attended a traditional art college. Many of the artists who exhibit at Urban Paradise are also of ethnic decent, so the gallery acts as a community for different creative cultures. Frederic says what really shines through the gallery is the team spirit and cooperation among the artists who, as part of the Artist Run Initiative (ARI), operate the gallery together in return for exhibiting their work in the gallery without commission. “At the moment, we have about 30 artists on the books who look after the premises, establish the roster, mind the gallery, sell art and basically have full responsibility of the gallery,” Frederic says.

The tourism industry of Surfers Paradise has helped build awareness around the gallery and drawn people from all around the world to the local artworks. “The response from tourists has been fantastic! The sculpture ‘Marcel’, which sits out the front of the gallery, has had his photo taken with around 800 travellers from all over the globe,” Frederic says. “Tourists love learning about the stories behind local art, especially the art created around local environmental movements, such as those created for the Save The Spit movement.” “We also work with local restaurants and hotels, such as The Outrigger, who display our artwork and draw people to Urban Paradise,” he says. As the gallery grows from strength to strength, celebrating local creativity, culture and collaboration, the question arises: what does Urban Paradise have in store for 2015? “This year we are looking into holding more performances. We have transformed the back area into a performance stage for performers and musicians, which seats about 40 people,” Frederic says. “It is an intimate setting for artists to rehearse and perform free of charge. We are all artists, and by word of mouth through friends of friends, we are always finding people who are keen to utilise the space.” “Urban Paradise has a lot of great things coming throughout the year,” he says. Its urban roots grow in a beach-lovers paradise, and its substance blooms in an art community committed to each other and to progress. Urban Paradise Art Gallery is a cultural powerhouse in the heart of Surfers Paradise, and one that opens its doors to beach babes, tourists, locals, artists and art-lovers alike.

Its urban roots grow in a beach-lovers paradise, and its substance blooms in an art community committed to each other and to progress.

This is a side of the city you don’t want to miss.

“The artists who exhibit here are committed and passionate about art and the gallery. There is a real team spirit at Urban Paradise.”

Yugambeh Mobo, for today and tomorrow

The Yugambeh Mobo Event 2015 What does tomorrow mean to you?

Y

ugambeh Mobo, which means ‘Yugambeh Tomorrow’, celebrates the permanency and strength of tomorrow, and expresses that in order to commemorate Aboriginal culture today, we must conserve history into tomorrow. Yugambeh Mobo is a celebration of Aboriginal stories, language, art and culture within South East Queensland and represents the perpetual union of Aboriginal people to the local land. The campaign seeks to ensure that, along with the city’s historic salt-and-surf culture and the various traditions lent from an eclectic international community, the Aboriginal culture and language maintain their robust pulse in the heartbeat of the region. To acknowledge our past, celebrate the present and focus on the strength and union of tomorrow, we look to Yugambeh Mobo, a campaign set to teach us a piece of Gold Coast history we might not have known before.

The Campaign and the Festival Yugambeh is the language that was spoken by the Yugambeh people in South East Queensland, between the Logan River and the Tweed River. There were once a number of dialects within the Yugambeh language. The Elders behind Yugambeh Mobo founded the Kombumerri Aboriginal Corporation for Culture 30 years ago, while The Yugambeh Mobo organisation began more recently. Yugambeh Mobo started as a community project to help connect local residents of the Gold Coast with the Indigenous stories of this space, with the aim of recording and revitalising traditional Aboriginal culture of South East Queensland. The movement, as of last year, now hosts an annual Yugambeh Mobo event on the Gold Coast, which includes an Indigenous food dinner and an engaging one-day activities event at Somerset College with seminars, extensive workshops and performances. The movement was established to connect the wider community of South East Queensland with Aboriginal traditions, beliefs, concepts,

food, art and music of the region. From this colourful marriage between ancient and contemporary cultures is born a sense of pride that will last for generations. While the campaign advocates for continuous cultural development, conservation and education in the region, the Yugambeh Mobo event is an opportunity to watch, feel and taste this rich and dynamic heritage.

cased in a high-end, bush tucker degustation dinner at a local restaurant yet to be confirmed. Contemporary cooking techniques merging with native ingredients and ancient flavour-pairings; a delicious union of past and present. The Yugambeh Mobo event entails both ticketed and non-ticketed events for the whole family.

One of the aims of the campaign is to re-introduce Yugambeh language back into everyday life. According to Yugambeh Museum Director Rory O’Connor, language is the essence of understanding one’s Indigenous history and place on the earth.

Yugambeh People As suggested by archaeological evidence, Aboriginal people have inhabited the Gold Coast region for over 23,000 years before European settlement. There were several very distinct tribes in this area, which combined were known as the Yugambeh people and who spoke the Yugambeh language.

“We want to educate and engage people in the culture, and help them to embrace the language of this area to pass onto future generations,” Rory says.

Each distinct family group inhabited its own territory, and gradually established many permanent camps around the area in response to seasons and their food sources.

“We want people to know the local names of places, why this river is called the Coomera River and why that mountain is called Tamborine Mountain. Whether through schools, concerts or community groups, our history needs to be lived.”

Logan City was the intersection of the Yugambeh and the Jaggera, two major language groups in this region. As a result of early white settlement, the exact territorial boundaries of these two groups are not known and present discussion and knowledge on the region has not yet settled this.

Rory also says the movement has achieved cultural reconnection for many Yugambeh people who before didn’t know anything about their history prior. “We have encountered many people who knew little about their past prior to engaging with us. The truth is though, we could all know more about the Yugambeh stories and we ourselves are still learning every day,” Rory says. “It is our role to facilitate that learning for all members of the community, Indigenous and non-Indigenous.” The 2015 Yugambeh Mobo event will take place on Friday 29 and Sunday 31 May, and will include performances by the Yugambeh Youth Choir and the Yugambeh Didgeridoo Orchestra, as well as hands-on workshops and cultural activities at Somerset College on the Sunday.

The area between today’s Bundall and Surfers Paradise bordering the Nerang River as well as some other proximate locations have been recognised as a meeting place for visiting tribes, where great corroborees and Bora rings were held. There is still evidence of these today around the Gold Coast and Tweed River region. Today, the Yugambeh people maintain their spiritual integrity and connection to the land through community meetings and events, such as a series of Drumley Walks between Southport and Beaudesert, the Yugambeh Mobo event and the Yugambeh Museum and Heritage Research Centre in Beenleigh. For more information Visit yugambeh.com and surfersparadise.com, or call (07) 3807 6155 at the Yugambeh Museum.

THE FAMOUS SURFERS PARADISE BEACHFRONT MARKETS

A NOT TO BE MISSED EXPERIENCE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

I

conic Surfers Paradise is your shopping, dining and entertainment precinct.

Make a day and night of it in Surfers Paradise with perfect beaches, non-stop entertainment, shopping, attractions and so much more… After a day of fun and sun there’s no better way to end your day than with an enjoyable evening stroll down to the foreshore, where you will find the famous Beachfront Markets every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday night. With up to 130 specialty stalls there is truly something for everyone! Explore a variety of unique and diverse hand crafted products, watch artisans at work, enjoy a variety of entertainment, and even get your photo taken with a snake or exotic bird. Indulge in a massage; get a henna tattoo; find boutique clothing brands; sample some delicious desserts, treats, macadamias, popcorn or jerky; or find what’s in store for the year ahead with a personal tarot reading. You will even find crocodile, kangaroo and other hand-crafted leather goods. Here’s a tiny snapshot of the fantastic stalls you can stumble across; 1. OUTBACK AUSTRALIAN ART; watch this artist at work as he creates stunning outback scenery before your eyes on canvas, as well as on an array of other rustic surfaces like old saws, milk cans, billy cans, watering cans and iron skillets. 2. NATUREPET; a one-of-a-kind, these stallholders have developed their love of their pet macaws into a unique and stirring experience for markets visitors. Hand reared and treated like members of the family, these beautiful exotic birds will thrill and delight those that step forward to embrace the friendly, feathered characters for a special photo opportunity. These colourful, long-tailed birds are cheeky and playful, and often throw in an impromptu singing and dancing show for their appreciative audience. 3. CARICATURES by Rodolfo; take a lighter look at yourself with an on-the-spot caricature drawing by professional artist Rodolfo. In minutes he can transform you into a cartoon version of yourself that will have you in fits of giggles and walking away with a unique souvenir of your visit to the Beachfront Markets. If more serious is your style, we also have a portrait artist on site that can produce a quality likeness of you or your favourite pet or celebrity to take home. 4. PARADISE GLASSBLOWERS; the rare art form of glassblowing is on demonstration for the enjoyment of market

visitors. Watch our professional glassblower spin and weave sticks of glass into magical glass masterpieces right before your eyes. A beautiful array of pieces are available for sale, and if you’re lucky, you can even purchase your own, special made-to-order glass art. 5. ZEBRA STONE DESIGNS; connect to Mother Earth with exclusive design collections featuring the striking Zebra Stone, a 600 million year old gemstone found only in Australia. Zebra Stone is a fine-grained siliceous argillite formed by the rhythmic precipitation of iron oxide rich bands during the alteration of the rock by percolating fluids, and the colour formations are truly representative of the outback colours of Western Australia. The polishing technique of this unique stone brings to life its true beauty. Each piece is totally unique and made with love. 6. CLAUDINE’S TREATS; this stall is a favourite with locals, who come to the markets week after week just to stock up on Claudine’s fresh homemade treats. Come and get a free taste test to determine what your favourite Claudine Treat is! We love the sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce. And the chocolaty, crunchy Afghan biscuits. And the deliciously sweet caramel slice. And the gluten-free Passionfruit Melting Moments. And… aw gee, we love them all! 7. LUKE’S REPTILES; with a career that began with chasing frogs while still in nappies, Luke has created a marvellous wildlife show where visitors can learn all about the behaviour of the native Australian reptiles on display and the importance of conservation. Cute and cuddly to some, slimy and slithery to others, Luke expels the myths about snakes while visitors get up close and personal with a one-off photo opportunity with these fascinating creatures. 8. PETER & DOROTHY’S HANDPAINTED GIFTS; anchors of the Beachfront Markets, Peter and Dorothy have been selling their uniquely Australian hand painted souvenirs to domestic and international visitors since the inception of the markets in 1995. Watch Dorothy as she creates her pieces on site, painting the distinctive Surfers Paradise skyline on wooden maps of Australia, plates, sea shells, magnets and more. The perfect memento of your Surfers Paradise holiday. 9. CUT COIN JEWELLERY; fascinating to watch in progress, Javier masterfully and intricately carves away at redundant and overseas currency coins to create exceptional jewellery pieces that will captivate the wearer. It takes great skill and precision, but the end result is a stunning cut coin jewellery piece that everyone will admire. 10. ENTERTAINMENT; dotted throughout the markets you will find an array of talented artists busking and performing for your entertainment. Comedians, dare-devils, bands and solo artists, living statues and percussion musicians. All have to audition for the privilege of performing in Surfers Paradise to ensure each act is quality entertainment for our visitors. Show your appreciation for their talent with a few coins or a hearty round of applause. Or both! It’s easy to see why the Beachfront Markets are a must-do Gold Coast attraction and the recipient of the 2014 TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence Award for consistent rave reviews from visitors. Plan your perfect day and night in Surfers Paradise. There’s plenty of secure undercover parking available right in the heart of the precinct, or jump on the G and jump off at Cavill Ave. Go to www.surfersparadise.com for everything you need to know, including information on what’s on, where to park, where to play, and where to stay!

Jet Boat Extreme

Cheyne Horan Surf School

‘Cool your jets’ is not a phrase often used in Surfers Paradise, where adrenaline, waves and white wash run through the veins of our local adventure providers. The exhilaration of Jet Boat Extreme is captured in the name. To keep it simple, this attraction combines wet and wild fun with a need for aquatic speed. What can you expect in 55 minutes? 360-degree spins, power breaks, skilful slides across the water and a seriously increased heartbeat! But what really makes this adventure ride memorable is the stunning Gold Coast scenery that surrounds the boat at every angle, even if the view is flying past you! The drivers are handpicked and highly trained in safety and speed, the boats are powered by 5.8 litre, turbo-charged Yanmar engines (pumping 50,000 litres of water per minute!) and the seats are all about comfort; ergonomically designed to cushion riders while the boat whips around at 40 knots!

Paddle, balance, paddle, duck dive, paddle, spin and stand up! What would a trip to Surfers Paradise be without a taste of its surf culture? Since then, the duo have cruised from strength to strike with major hits including

‘UFO’, ‘Kansas City’, ‘Hip Hip Horray’ and ‘Pictures’. From what began as a Sunday Sessions gig in Sydney, erupted into a global music team that carved its name across international music tours and events, as well as big Australian musical festivals such as Big Day Out, Homebake, Good Vibrations Festival, Splendour In The Grass, Stereosonic and more. To watch the multi-layered dexterity of ‘Black Angus’ McDonald and the soaring vocals of Connie Mitchell as they take control of Surfers Paradise will be nothing short of a live music phenomenon. Phil Jamieson You know the words of ‘Chemical Heart’? Then you know the silky, rock and roll vocals of Phil Jamieson, the face and voice behind one of Australia’s most popular bands, Grinspoon. Though indefinitely disbanded, Phil continues as an accomplished singer, songwriter and guitarist with years’ worth of unique, conceptual lyrics and onstage prowess. Bonjah This lively four-piece rock group from the chilly thermals of New Zealand have toured with some of the biggest music names around the world, including The Who, G Love & Special Sauce, The Beautiful Girls, The Black Seeds and Eskimo Joe. The King Returns Viva Surfers Paradise 2015

S

o you know those bellbottoms you just couldn’t throw out? And we know that hair gel is still hiding in the bathroom cupboard. Well it’s time to get the gear out gents, and ladies, practice your swooning; the King is about to return to the beach. By popular demand, renowned Elvis Presley tribute artists Chris Connor and Bill Cherry will be bringing their electrifying Elvis renditions to Viva Surfers Paradise 2015, the Gold Coast’s loudest and proudest tribute to music from the fifties and sixties. Presented by Hotel Grand Chancellor Surfers Paradise, this free week-long event is a rock and rollin’ time for die-hard music fans and families alike, featuring a number of live tribute shows, dancing sessions and lessons, Rock n’ Roll quiz night, vintage market stalls, retro fashion parades and the popular Elvis Tribute Artist Contest. The stakes for the contest are high with the winner securing a spot in the Memphis Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest. Elvis loved Las Vegas, but his heart and home was Memphis. Viva Surfers Paradise is all about celebrating the life and music of legends from the not-so-distant past, whose influence and musical revolution can still be heard half a century on. Don’t miss out!

tribute artists Chris Connor Chris Connor from the UK is set to return and bring his electrifying on-stage performance to the 2015 festival. Chris is known as one of the world’s best Elvis tribute artists. His mannerisms, voice and style are uncanny, and allow him to transport his fans back to the real world Elvis. His performances across the world have been

described as not only inspiring and one of the most authentic of this genre, but it has also been dubbed as a heart-warming and touching experience for the fans who loved the King so much. Chris is also renowned for his natural physical resemblance to Elvis, which combined with his velvety voice and smooth rural southern accent, allows Chris to bring the King back to life before people’s eyes.

Bill Cherry Bill Cherry is joining us from the USA and has been labelled the cream of the crop when it comes to Elvis tribute artists. His extensive musical passion, which began as a child, and his love for Elvis and desire to perform, renders his show a flaming performance of legendary talent. Bill has been paying homage to the King since 1987 in his singing, dancing and unmistakable Presley mannerisms. And if that wasn’t enough, Bill drives the same car as Elvis once did - a Stutz Blackhawk. He has reached a level of stardom and experience that has landed him performances alongside some of the bands that supported Elvis back in the day, including The Jordaniers, The Sweet Inspirations, DJ Fontana and members of J.D. Sumner and the Stamps Quartet. His realistic renditions have earned Bill many awards and accolades, including winning the Memphis Ultimate Elvis Tribute Artist Contest and the Ultimate Elvis Preliminaries in Tupelo, Mississippi. If ambition is a dream with a V8 engine, then the Gold Coast knows all about it. Those pants, the hair gel; it’s time to put them on. And while you’re there, grab your blue suede shoes, because Viva Surfers Paradise is about to be graced by two Kings. This is a FREE event, however for the diehard fans, LIMITED PREMIUM RESERVED SEATING IS AVAILABLE at some shows. Check surfersparadise.com for details.

Salt & Sophistication

A touch of Texas meets beachside bliss at Clifford’s Grill and Lounge

The wine list is the kind of document that makes established sommeliers wipe their forehead in wonder. With over 60 boutique, major name and Australian old and new world wines, you’ll forgive lunch turning into happy hour, and then into a late night dinner. Clifford’s Signature Cocktails will too steal away from the evening’s prior plans. Take the LA Woman, for example: a silky blend of Cruzan Single Barrel Rum, house-made five spice molasses and dark chocolate. What dinner reservations? In comprehending the muscle of this ten-piece grill, it’s wise to get behind a plate of the Charred Half Free Range Chicken with spiced Memphis dry rub and sticky molasses, or the New York Strip Steak with herb butter and pink peppercorn sauce. Meats are a speciality at Clifford’s, using the highest quality cuts across both the grill and the slow-cooked dishes.

I

f the ten-burner centrepiece grill is anything to go by, you know that Clifford’s Grill & Lounge is serious about hot and smoky flavour.

As you step through the open, industrial-style entrance straight from the bustle and blur of Surfers Paradise Boulevard, prepare to be socked by a wall of delicious aroma from the open kitchen. Flames flash, smoke billows, and the air smells savoury. But just as you’re starting to hear Southern Texan accents in your head and look around for the spurs, a salty whisper of Pacific Ocean air rolls in and brings you straight back to Surfers Paradise. Clifford’s Grill & Lounge is a mighty grill house in the beach cocoon of Surfers Paradise, an Americana hub in a city of sand. This is one of the two new dining establishments at Watermark Hotel & Spa Gold Coast that, alongside Walrus Social House next door, has spearheaded the refreshed urban entertainment precinct on the hotel’s ground floor. This development has set the threshold for the city’s shift towards finer urban culture and lifestyle. It’s ideal then, that the Light Rail Surfers Paradise station is at the precinct’s doorstep, for twilight

44

Precinct Magazine / Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast

revellers to follow that smoke to splendour. Next stop, weekend. The Watermark’s contemporary development project has been recognised internationally by significant industry players, and stands as a driving force for the hotel’s consideration for Agoda.com’s 2014 Gold Circle Awards for hospitality excellence. These prestigious awards acknowledge the industry’s best, which make up only 3 per cent of Agoda.com’s 500,000 properties worldwide, an achievement that Watermark’s Revenue Manager Russel Petts attributes to the hotel’s mission for quality. “The past year has been spent on improving the quality of our offering, keeping the property top of mind, especially within our drive market in south-east Queensland,” says Russel. All this winning is stirring the appetite. Clifford’s Grill & Lounge was designed with three clear elements in mind: good food, good drinks and good times. While the outdoor, recycled timber deck space, European-style lounge and main dining space accommodate the diners, the winers can get cosy at the stylish bar, illuminated by studio bulbs and bordered in black.

The tapas menu, which should be negotiated with a recommended glass in hand, speaks to couples or small groups with punchy, rationally sized share plates. Three-hour slow braised pork belly, free range buffalo wings, chargrilled king prawns, Sicilian arancini. Grab another glass, you might be a while. On Saturdays and Sundays, Clifford’s awakens early to provide city creatures a wholesome, hearty breakfast that heroes modern Australian favourites like smashed avo, eggs Benedict and Bircher muesli with high quality ingredients. The brains behind the menu is Executive Chef and renowned epicurean Daniel Smith, GQ Magazine’s Chef of the Year 2011, who was drawn to the position by the precinct’s vibrant allround offer. “The development is totally different to anything that’s currently on the Gold Coast,” says Smith. “It’s what attracted me to this new role; creating a home for sensational and irresistible food, wrapped in a cocoon of architectural cool, right in the heart of ‘Australia’s playground’.” Smith is also to thank for the menu at Walrus Social House, the entertainment lounge next door. As we move across the floor to this smart-casual café and dining venue, one might sense the sugary bouquet of rum in the air as it surfs the thermals of spice and char from another powerhouse kitchen.

Festival Edition / 2015

Walrus Social House, named in historical honour of the entrepreneurial James ‘Bosun’ Stewart and his riverboat distillery, the SS Walrus, is a speciality rum bar with over 25 international rum bottles, as well as the 70 worldly, high-end spirits, and a selection of wine and craft beers. Walrus is an all-inclusive entertainment hive that happily excludes the ubiquitous sports television. Rather, real entertainment comes in the form of a stylish bar and cabana lounge, an energetic live music scene, a chic gaming lounge and a health-conscious café. Eating together is the nucleus of this Walrus Social House, as it spotlights the best tapas dishes from Clifford’s with some additional bigger bites, pizzettas and bits and pieces for the side, some rich enough to stand alone. No Walrus experience, however, is quite accomplished without a bite into the Walrus Lobster Baguette, with poached lobster

tail, preserved lemon mayo, dill pickle with a handful of crispy eggplant chips. Happy Hour is on everyone’s watch at Walrus, where Social Sunset sessions between 4.00pm and 6.00pm offer $5 on tap beers and $14 signature cocktails. The café of wholesome to-go snacks and light meals, smoothies, juices and fresh espresso, is open daily from 6.00am. Clifford’s Grill & Lounge and Walrus Social House are a force to be reckoned with. Guided by two sophisticated menus and, at the best of times, led astray by provocative wine and beverage menus, both establishments are setting the city’s cultural threshold and then breaking right through it. Flavour, atmosphere, liquor and laughs in one trendy hotel precinct.

A Modern-Day Renaissance And just like that, a centre is reborn. Chevron Renaissance centre’s $5 million redevelopment has been praised as the ultimate embodiment of the current Gold Coast Zeitgeist, transforming one of Surfers Paradise’s most iconic buildings into a vibrant hipster’s paradise. The centre’s reinvention project is nearly complete, with a number of new kids on the block recently joining the collection of trendy, prominent industry traders and on-the-pulse street-food and coffee outlets.

Let Viet Baguette do lunch One of the most exciting food revolutions taking our capital cities by storm is that of the Vietnamese baguette. As a pioneer of trend in Surfers Paradise, Chevron Renaissance welcomes its own streetfood bar, Viet Baguette. This authentic Vietnamese-French food venue with a modern Australian twist has quickly assumed its role as the Boulevard’s South East Asian hotspot. As chit-chat and sighs of satisfaction ricochet from the bare brick walls, with handfuls of fresh lemongrass noodles and rice paper rolls travelling around the tables, Viet Baguette transforms your everyday snack spot to an intercontinental sojourn; a lunchtime trip to Asia.

Harmoni-T; join Chevron’s modern tea society This modern beverage experience brews the perfect temptation in a teapot. Harmoni-T outlet is based on the refined sensory experience

of drinking tea, and combines this with the city’s vitality and buzz. Serene sociality at its best. To complement the myriad of eclectic international cuisines setting up in Chevron’s alleyways, Harmoni-T serves up the finest cups of handpicked Jing Tea in delicate Asian teaware, founding a sweet social hub to sit down and talk tea. That’s got to be everyone’s cup of sencha.

Bento Japanese Cuisine; wholesome and fresh In following the culinary traditions of Japan and leading the health sentience of the Gold Coast, Bento Japanese Cuisine offers a number of wholesome sushi options as well as delicious, fresh Japanese fare. The precinct’s latest dip into Tokyo life is focused on offering a healthy choice prepared with the adroit techniques of the Japanese chefs, including a sugar-free Bento Deluxe, and a planned seasonal Sizzle Hot Pot menu for autumn and winter.

Negative 210’s positively cooler ice cream Let’s cool things down a little, to say -210 degrees Celsius! Negative 210 is the Gold Coast’s first liquid-nitrogen ice cream store with a nifty team of mixologists and epic flavours with quirky names. What could the Seven Months Pregnant and George CantStandYa taste like? You’re looking at something like peanut butter, pretzels, chocchips and fudge, or pecans and choc- chips married with a gooey rivulet of caramel fudge. And this ice cream is anything but your average chill. It’s blasted with liquid nitrogen that drops to -210 degrees, blitzing the ice cream to ice-hot frozenness, which prevents the formation of ice crystals. Is this white-hot-freeze sensation even ice cream? Who cares, it’s the tastiest icebreaker on the coast.

Zambrero’s mighty, mindful Mexican Zambrero’s Surfers Paradise has a good idea of authentic Mexican street food. Its recent outlet at Chevron Renaissance has stood as a popular food fiesta for Mexican fans since its opening, offering classic burritos of juicy tomatoes, silky sour cream, house-made guacamole, and slow-cooked meats, as well as vegetarian and vegan options. As if these plates could look any better, Zambrero’s Plate4Plate initiative provides funds to humanitarian projects in Asia, Africa and the Americas for the provision of food. Feel like a philanthropic fiesta? Ándale!

Lansdowne Road’s route to cider bar The Irish love their ale, Aussies love their cider, and Lansdowne Road Irish Tavern in Chevron Renaissance is here to pour the best of both worlds. This family-friendly local pub and favourite social spot is soon to undergo an exciting transformation to become an ultra-hip cider bar. This will also see a new dining and drinking area with modern timber seatings, summery garden umbrellas and artificial turf to create a relaxing, chic outdoor vibe while holding onto its traditional Dublin character. Hold on to the four-leaf, this modish renovation will be a lucky change for locals.

Max Brenner a new chocolate haven in Paradise Anyone who understands great chocolate, or how to spend an hour or two in real indulgence, knows about Max Brenner Chocolate Bars. In the last few years this fresh name in chocolate has sprinkled around Australia like choc-chips on a chocolate pizza (yes, you can find those here), forming its own high quality confectionary culture. Max Brenner’s unique blends of dark, milk and white chocolate products are quickly turning chocolate lovers to addicts. Once you go Max, you never go back. The recent introduction of the Max Brenner Chocolate Bar at Chevron Renaissance has drawn thousands of cocoa bean disciples on a pilgrimage of pleasure. An after-dinner treat of hot chocolate and soufflé perhaps? Or a decadent dinner of Belgium waffles, fresh fruit and melted signature Max Brenner milk chocolate?

Destination 4217; a stylist’s soiree This is a melting pot of fashion labels in one Surfers Paradise destination. Rise of Dawn, Maddison Square, Stylewalker, Little Lies; the list goes on, darling. Owner of Destination 4217 Sharon Kennedy, a fashion professional for the last 20 years, is offering a little more than just the label. She will also provide in-store styling services with the huge range of boutique brands and products to local ladies and tourists seeking a little wardrobe wisdom. “I’m determined to share my knowledge to assist women of all ages in making the best fashion choices for themselves,” says Sharon. Message from Mayor Message from of the City of Gold Division 7 Councillor Coast, his worship Cr Lex Bell OAM Tom Tate

Message from Surfers Paradise Alliance Chairperson Laura Younger

I am thrilled to officially open the sixth annual Surfers Paradise Festival, an event that celebrates everything that’s great about the Gold Coast. The festival showcases the Gold Coast’s diversity. Local artists, performers and foodies take centre stage while the local audience is given a front-row seat, across a calendar of events with something for everyone. Major events like the Surfers Paradise Festival are crucial to the growth of the Gold Coast – as both opportunities for cultural exchange and drivers of economic activity. And there really is no better place for the community to gather – Surfers Paradise is the heart of Gold Coast entertainment and the perfect backdrop for a celebration of life in the best city in the world.

For an incredible six years the talent and skill of Gold Coast and interstate artists has been channelled into the Surfers Paradise Festival. The festival is a key piece of Gold Coast City Council and Surfers Paradise Alliance’s shared vision for Surfers Paradise as a family-friendly destination where amazing things can happen. As Surfers Paradise continues to transform, so does the Surfers Paradise Festival, with new events to reflect the changing tastes of our audience. This year we’ve added the Festival Pavilion with 10 days of exciting entertainment with something for all ages. The Pavilion will stand proudly on the iconic Surfers Paradise beach with a backdrop that is hard to beat! Visitors and locals alike will be able to enjoy first class entertainment without the price tag, with free shows and workshops daily. Precinct businesses and Surfers Paradise Alliance aim to deliver the absolute best to the Gold Coast through the Surfers Paradise Festival. Happy sixth birthday… and here’s to many more!

SURFERS PARADISE FESTIVAL 2015

It’s wonderful to see the Surfers Paradise Festival turn six. The event brings a real excitement to Surfers Paradise: enticing events, days out with family and friends, the precinct comes alive. Behind the scenes, the event also provides a very real boost for local traders. It’s a high-quality event that draws a significant audience to Surfers Paradise each year. It’s been so encouraging to watch the festival grow to become a key driver of economic activity and a crucial part of the events tourism strategy for Surfers Paradise. The festival has a growing audience and provides a vibrant focal point to appreciate and savour the city’s evolving identity. That’s the heart of the festival for me… the opportunity to walk down from my home in Surfers Paradise each weekend, enjoy a coffee and a meal and experience the spirit of community and the excitement of the new.

Australian Street Entertainment Championships Friday 3 April – Monday 6 April Kicking off this year’s Surfers Paradise Festival, Australian Street Entertainment Championships (ASEC) brings some of the best stunt performers, jugglers, adagio, acrobats, illusionists and musicians to Surfers Paradise for four days of exhilarating live performances. ASEC returns in 2015 with four performance zones (pitches) delivering artists from both the Invited and Competing categories, including The English Gents, Quatro, Rhys the Trickster and California, to name a few, and the not to be missed feature act “The Wheel of Danger”. Show your support and back your favourite performer by voting for the People’s Champion. Throughout ASEC the lines will be open to collect your SMS votes, the performer who collects the most votes will be crowned the People’s Champion and will compete against the 5 runner-ups for the title of Australian Street Entertainment Champion. With the judges’ – and the crowd’s – favour hanging in the balance, these showbiz artisans will leave nothing behind in an effort to dazzle, intrigue and amaze.
