Welcome Note

H

ello, Summer! We hope you’ve been enjoying this blissful weather as much as we have. It’s arguably the best time of year in Surfers Paradise, there is truly nothing better than enjoying the festivities ahead with balmy nights, hot days and beautiful beaches helping you celebrate.

And there sure is a lot to celebrate! Summer school holidays are upon us and Surfers Paradise is pulling out all the stops to make it a memorable season. Starting with Christmas, this year the family can enjoy the exciting annual lead up to Christmas in Cavill Mall. From Santa and his sleigh of ‘kangaroos’ to a dazzling light display and an unforgettable night of carols and entertainment, Surfers Paradise is the only place you will need to be to feel the spirit of Christmas (more on pages 14-15). We also bring you loads of ideas on how to spend Christmas Day making the best of your beautiful surrounds with outdoor locations, picnic recipes and all the best restaurant offerings (pages 16-21). Of course, once Christmas is over you will want to start thinking about bringing in the New Year, so check out the New Year’s Eve Guide on page 32 for what’s on in a city that rarely sleeps. In February, the annual Sand Safari – Australian Sand Sculpting Championships event comes to town and this year the theme is sure to inspire a bit of magic at the hands of some of the world’s best sand sculptors. Sand Safari Magical Friendships, featuring Disney will take shape along the Surfers Paradise foreshore. The event takes place over 17 days, commencing 13 February 2015. If you haven't been before, don't miss out; it’s a spectacular sight. You will find a whole lot more in this issue, including special features on retailers and new eateries that may have gone unnoticed, but are definitely worth the visit. In fact, our resident foodie was thrilled to take some time out to uncover some of Surfers Paradise’s best new (and pre-loved!) restaurants, taste-testing her way through some very cool hot spots. Check out Foodie's Passage through Paradise on page 46.

2. A Mexican wave hits Surfers Paradise

Inspired by the sophisticated street culture of Melbourne’s laneway dining and retail scene, whilst incorporating the unique salt and sunshine essence of Surfers Paradise, the Chevron Renaissance redevelopment project will fuse the best of both worlds with innovation and vibrancy. The project, which will materialise a bustling urban precinct of rustic eateries, retail outlets and artisan artwork stores, is on track and due to be completed by the start of the busy summer period. Lease negotiation is currently underway with a number of future traders that will enliven the shopping experience with their own flavour and character, including a Japanese fusion restaurant, a Vietnamese baguette operator from Melbourne and a specialist tea concept store, among others. The centre is looking to fill the remaining four tenancies, with their eyes on the horizon for some hip street food or a craft beer operator. The Chevron Renaissance redevelopment project has been designed to quench patrons’ thirst for culinary culture on the coast and will be a little taste of Melbourne in the heart of the Gold Coast.

Mexican quick service restaurant Guzman Y Gomez is setting up shop at the Paradise Centre on Cavill Mall. The franchise has enjoyed a great run at Broadbeach’s Oracle Shopping Centre and Robina Town Centre, now stretching business to Surfers Paradise to throw down some lime, chilli and zesty chipotle on the plates of international visitors and local Mexican-lovers. Guzman Y Gomez focuses on flavoursome food and their topquality Australian flank steak, overnight marinated chicken thigh, and slow roasted beef and pork for that mouth-watering pull-apart sensation. The menu showcases the heady and hearty flavours of Mexico in their fluffy burritos with traditional toppings, which can be customised to gluten, meat and dairy free options. Best enjoyed on Surfers Paradise Beach with a chilled Jarritos and a sombrero. Gold Coasters have another reason to throw up their hats and cry Arriba!

As a commemoration to 100 years since the start of World War I, the Wax Museum in Surfers Paradise is hosting exhibitions with some very interesting pasts, including British Army Officer ‘Lawrence of Arabia’, who fought alongside Arab Guerrilla troops in the war, and prisoner of war and RAF Second Lieutenant Hugh C Tussaud, who following the war, was the Director of the Dublin Wax Museum. The Surfers Paradise Wax Museum is the largest in the southern hemisphere and has long been a hit among international and Australian visitors for its real-life reminiscence of a world gone by, as its series of wax statue scientists, actors, singers, politicians and members of royalty stand proudly throughout the museum.

Judged upon its overall guest experience, the extensive range of corporate and leisure facilities, a shining commitment to staff development and training, and its overall service and dedication to perfection, the Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort & Spa has been awarded the 2014 QHA ‘Best Deluxe Hotel Accommodation’ Award for Excellence. As well as a nod to the hotel’s all-round performance and innovation, including its world-first mobile check-in service, the award also stands to motivate individual and group achievement among the hospitality industry. The Marriott’s chef Andrew Fraser has also recently been awarded the AHA ‘Chef of the Year’ award, and the hotel’s renowned Citrique Seafood Restaurant has won ‘Best Seafood Restaurant’ at the Savour Australia Restaurant & Catering HOSTPLUS Awards.

ArtBY SAND Surfers Paradise Beach transforms into a golden gallery of beautiful artwork with the annual Sand Safari, featuring the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships 2015

I

t's that time of year again when we celebrate the magic and fun of Sand Safari, watching experts sculpt and create marvellous sand masterpieces and getting a bit of sand on our own hands too!

This year, Sand Safari, presented by Streets Ice Cream, will take you on a journey to discover, imagine and explore the wonderful art of sand sculpting. Over two weeks, the Surfers Paradise Foreshore and various locations across the Gold Coast will feature magnificent sand sculptures with this year’s theme representing Disney’s Magical Friendships from your favourite childhood stories. There’ll be over a dozen sculptures along the foreshore plus sand art and bottle workshops, sand sculpting championships and much more. It’s the perfect outing for the whole family.
The feature event of Sand Safari - the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships - will be held over a 17-day period, which will see Australia’s best sand sculptors interpret their favourite Disney ‘magical friendship’ moment. The ten sculptors, including one wildcard entry, will be tasked with completing their amazing ten tonne sculptures in just three days. You can view the sculptures any time over the 17 days but be sure to check out the opening weekend, which will run from Friday to Sunday, with the championship presentations held on the afternoon of Sunday 15 February. A special Disney Exhibition featuring two 25 tonne sculptures, will be built for an interactive photo opportunity for the public. Get up and close in this sectioned off area and have your photo taken with these amazing sculptures, all free of charge. If that wasn’t enough for your viewing pleasure, Streets Ice Cream will also have their annual sculpture weighing a whopping 20 tonnes (design to be revealed Sunday, 15 February!).

8

Precinct Magazine / Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast

Once you see some sculpting in action, you’ll want to roll up those sleeves and get your own hands sandy, and you can do just that with the Sand Art and Sand Bottle Workshops that will run every day, plus sand sculpting workshops to be held from Monday 16 February to Sunday 1 March.

If you consider your family to be on the artistic side, then get involved in the 'Family Sand Sculpting Challenge’. From Monday 16 to Friday 20 February, Hot Tomato listeners will have the chance to be a part of the Sand Sculpting Challenge. All you need to do to enter is visit www.myGC.com.au and tell us why you think you should secure a spot in the challenge! From this, four teams will be chosen to attend the challenge on Surfers Paradise Beach on Saturday 21 February (9am to 12pm). The teams will have to construct the best sand sculpture they can (with guidance from one of the professional sand sculpture artists) for their chance to win a share in $3,750 cash.

SAND TRAIL A safari of any kind requires some exploring, so why not take a Sand Trail through the Gold Coast and discover some truly spectacular sculptures along the way? Locations around the Gold Coast will be touched by the magic of Disney in the form of a wonderful sculpture that will represent Disney's Magical Friendships theme. Not only will you get a glimpse into the impressive skill and detail of sand sculpting, you can have fun with the family following the trail to each venue, taking guesses on which characters might be featured at the next stop! Keep your eyes peeled on surfersparadise.com for the locations of the Sand Trail to be revealed.

Christmas IN PARADISE

Surfers Paradise Beach

The Surfers Paradise Foreshore

Lionel Perry Park

Evandale Parklands

Celebrating Christmas before the piercing blue ocean lapping against the gold sand of Surfers Paradise Beach is Christmas on a postcard. On a summer’s day, when the water glistens like a basket of pearls and emerald, Gold Coast’s most famous beach is the ideal setting for the jolly season.

Mum and dad would like the shade, and the kids want the water. Framing the Surfers Paradise Beach, and woven into a native fabric of beach shrub, bush land and salty trunked trees, the Surfers Paradise Esplanade and Foreshore combines the best of both worlds.

This quintessentially Australian beach is throughout the year a popular surf spot, a volleyball court and nature’s swimming pool for Surfers Paradise locals and the thousands of travellers who yearn to dip their toes in this stunning slice of Pacific Ocean. There are no exceptions on Christmas Day, and as the morning unfolds in December warmth, the beach will come alive with family and friends and a full colour spectrum of umbrellas, beach balls and bikinis.

The City of Gold Coast’s Surfers Paradise Foreshore upgrade was completed in 2011 with stunning results. The cutting edge layout now showcases the harmony and vibrancy of Australia’s famous city by the sea, and provides a safe transition from the heart of Surfers Paradise onto the sand with clearer footpaths and roads. As well as this, there are now more accessible public spaces, and barbeque and event infrastructure dotting the entire area.

Lionel Perry Park is a green haven set before the winding waterways of Surfers Paradise. This park has a number of pine and palm trees, whose branches are flecked with the lime-green and blood red feathers of lorikeets, which sing in vivacious unison as if reciting their own Christmas carols.

Surfers Paradise offers more than just surf and sand, and the Evandale Parklands is an illustration of how this lively city is fast becoming a culture hub. Flourishing between the Council Chambers and the striking architecture of the Gold Coast Arts Centre, the park’s expanse of greenery and playing area caters for hours of family fun.

The Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Patrol will be watching the beach from 7am - 6pm and can be found at Tower 34, just beside the main entrance to the beach.

The Foreshore is ideal for fitness, picnics and walking, and has a range of upgraded facilities and stunning scenic viewpoints that will make the perfect backdrop to this year’s Christmas family photo.

As well as the surfboards, a cricket bat, Frisbee and a set of bowls, remember all of the gear you need to build your Christmas Day paradise. Pack an umbrella or beach tent, an esky with lots of ice, all the food, drinks and water for the day, and plenty of sunblock. Hats? Check. Sleeved shirts? Check. Camera? Check. Get down there early to secure a spot, because on Christmas Day, everyone wants a piece of this glorious action! The new Gold Coast Light Rail brings out-oftowners straight to Surfers Paradise North, Cypress Avenue, Cavill Avenue, Surfers Paradise and Northcliffe, all of which are a small walk away from the beach.

www.surfersparadise.com

There are numerous picnic tables along the foreshore, meaning you can pack a little more Christmas spread and leave the leftovers safely while you grab a spot on the grass for a post-lunch nap.

Throughout the year, the Lionel Perry Park is utilised by people of all ages for party gatherings, exercising, picnics, strolls and exploring. Located a stone’s throw from Cavill Avenue and bordered by a ribbon of aqua blue water, the salty summer breeze still manages to reach the park - a pleasant reminder that a beach swim is only minutes away. Lionel Perry Park has a playground and picnic tables, so pack the picnic basket and prepare for a Christmas Day feast under the sun!

Beyond the park’s borders erupts the piercing Surfers Paradise skyline, flooded with the warm violet and cotton candy clouds of a summer afternoon. This park is a popular venue for weddings and special events given its picturesque backdrop and proximity to the city. Christmas at Evandale Park, although a short drive from the beach, doesn’t mean swimming is off the cards! There is a large swimming lagoon at the eastern edge of the park, where nippers training and recreational swims take place for Gold Coast locals. There are also showers and amenities to freshen up and dry down after a dip. The parklands have a number of shaded barbeque areas and picnic tables, which are ideal for long Christmas feasts. For the picnic experience, there are plenty of trees peppered throughout the area. Bring all the sports gear you need, sunscreen, swimmers, towels and even your blow up pool toys from home!

in paradise Preparing the picnic: from where to shop to what to cook, we’ve got you covered for the ultimate outdoor Christmas feast!

Planning Organising what to eat for the entire family can be difficult on any given day, let alone with the pressure of satisfying a mass of hungry mouths! Fussy toddlers, hungry teens, vegan aunts and culinary conventional grandparents might restrict the boundaries of the lunch menu, but they also contribute to a melting pot of cooking creativity. Christmas Day can often be an expensive event, following presents, travel and accommodation. Embrace the new setting with a Christmas feast challenge. This year, it’s time to create some innovative dishes inspired by the coastal abundance of fresh, regional produce that won’t break the holiday budget. As a provedore’s hotbed settled between the Pacific Ocean and the bountiful Hinterland, Surfers Paradise inspires seafood opulence and seasonal eating both simple and delightful. Without leaving the neighbourhood, you and the family can find all the food and beverage supplies needed for a lavish beach barbeque or parklands picnic. Before shopping, plan out the Christmas menu from breakfast to lunch, making extra amounts for a light dinner. Keep in mind the dietary requirements and favourites of the

family, and involve the younger ones in the process! The kids will savour the opportunity to improve their cooking skills and be a part of this special occasion.

Where to shop In central Surfers Paradise there is a Coles and two Woolworths supermarkets for big grocery shops, as well as a number of smaller convenience food stalls for grabbing the items you might have forgotten (be sure to check Christmas trading hours). To find the freshest produce in a boutique market setting, Capri on Via Roma provides a delightful grocery experience and an opportunity for lunch on the Gold Coast waterways. The bustling market hall, framed by a striking architectural twist of polished timber, exposed steel and clean industrial details, was designed with the shopper in mind, invigorating the grocery experience with open floor space and climbing ceilings. As the Surfers Paradise yachts and fishing boats slide across the liquid glass of the residential waterways, you can take your time in grabbing the Christmas supplies, indulging in a sweet from Rice Haus Desserts or Mayfield Chocolates, or a coffee or bite to eat from the range of gourmet eateries spread around the complex.

The blood of any modern city should flow with the presence of art and culture, and as the Gold Coast represents a hotspot of individualism, it is fitting that vibrant Surfers Paradise sets the heartbeat. In the centre of the city, the recently opened contemporary art gallery Urban Paradise exhibits a plethora of extraordinary local Gold Coast art in a boutique setting, with a DJ and graffiti lounge to add to the cool. The non-for-profit gallery, set up by local French artist Frederic Berjot, is in cooperation with the Gold Coast Art Festival and accentuates what it means to be an artist on the coast, with exhibitions of established and emerging artists open to the public every day. As well as concentrating Gold Coast artistic flavour and talent in one modern setting, the gallery also works with new artists in realising their career goals and developing business competency in the industry.

Surfers Paradise Ambassador

Surfers Paradise Ambassador Profile: TANIA BALHATCHETT Tell us a little bit about yourself. I have lived on the Gold Coast for 18 years, which I think must make me a Queenslander now! I am originally a Canberra girl and moved here after living in Sydney. I’m the mother of two children, and the owner of two McDonald’s restaurants on the Gold Coast: one in Broadbeach and one in Cavill Avenue, Surfers Paradise, which I have owned for five years. What is your favourite thing about Surfers Paradise? I love that Surfers Paradise is great for families during the day, with lots of activities and places to visit for the kids, and by the evening it is the ideal place for a party and a great night out. What's one thing about Surfers Paradise you think the rest of the world should know? People sometimes forget that Surfers Paradise has the most amazing beach in the world! That is why so many people come to visit. Also, there is always something going on in Surfers Paradise, a local community occasion or an international event. Surfers Paradise has transformed in the last five years thanks to investment dollars and a well-planned strategy for the city. This has created a city we can all be proud of! What does your ideal day in Surfers Paradise consist of? My idea of my perfect day in Surfers Paradise would start with a helicopter ride over the city with my husband and children. Then we would

24

Precinct Magazine / Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast

enjoy a fantastic beachfront lunch with a glass of wine for my husband and I, and as the sun begins to set over the hinterland, we would do the SkyPoint external building climb, and admire the city lights from atop the Observation Deck. I also think the perfect day has to include a long beach walk! This way you see the whole cityscape from the sand, as well as the beautiful ocean. What does success mean to you, as a business owner? Success to me is developing and retaining a hardworking team with minimal turnover, meaning I can work with them over the long run to constantly improve and achieve the business’s goals every year. I think it’s also important to stimulate enough cash flow to pay the business bills without having to stress too much about it! What advice would you give to people who are aspiring entrepreneurs? Before beginning on the journey, write a detailed business plan and try to stick to it! Don’t be afraid to ask others for advice and while it is important to see and monitor the current state of the business, try and see beyond the present and into the future so you know its potential. Also, one must always look after their staff because they are the life of the business and are representing you at all times. Surfers Paradise is one of Australia’s top family destinations - why do you think it is so popular with families?

The beach and the parks are perfect places for family activity, there are so many events taking place all throughout the year, and for eating out, the options are endless! What do you think is Surfers Paradise’s bestkept secret? The endless stretch of pristine beach that sometimes is forgotten by locals but adored by tourists. We must remember not to take it for granted. Finish this sentence: If you are visiting Surfers Paradise for the first time, don’t forget … to stroll along the beach with a great coffee.

quick TOP FIVE 1.

Favourite Store: McDonald’s

2.

Favourite Attraction: TimeZone for my kids

3.

Favourite Restaurant: I have to say McDonald’s on Cavill! It’s a great location right on the beach and is perfect for grabbing something on the run.

4. Favourite Chillout Spot: A wine overlooking the ocean 5.

Favourite Outdoor Activity: Walking on the beach

Beach Volleyball Tour

Turns up the Heat The speed of tennis, the agility of basketball, and the bronzed bodies of surfing. These are the vital elements of beach volleyball that reflect perfectly the sun-loving Gold Coast lifestyle, and make for an exciting sport spectacular across the summer months.

T

he Queensland Beach Volleyball Tour is returning for another year to the umbrellapeppered shores of Surfers Paradise Beach, enlivening the city with activity, friendly competition and a vibe that has locals and visitors switching off the air-conditioning and racing down to the sand.

“But the tour isn’t a normal sport tour. It’s an interactive and festive community event about participation. Around 80% of the players who attend are playing socially. Some of them have never played before, and while families can come all together, some people come alone to meet new friends.”

The tour includes four major events at Surfers Paradise between December and March, with the National Opens event – the pinnacle of the season - being held in January.

This year is the event’s fifth in Surfers Paradise, and as it has continued to garner support from the community with each tournament, this year is expected to attract an exciting energy to reflect the club’s longevity and set a benchmark for coming years.

This event is as much a celebration of outdoor Australian sport as it is a showcase of Surfers Paradise’s city and its saltwater seduction. From the concrete amphitheatre, families, couples and individuals can laze under the clustered palm and Pandanus trees, feet warmed by the sun and faces cooled by the light easterly winds. While these sun-kissed athletes dart across the court, visitors can enjoy both relaxation and exhilaration as the competitive heat increases during the morning and cools with the dipping sun. This sporting event is unique in its setting and location, where visitors can walk straight from their accommodation to the courts, only stopping for a beachside beverage or tropical ice shave cone. Beach Volleyball Gold Coast Director Brett Richardson knows exactly what this tour is about, and while many elite volleyball athletes cross the country for the event, he says the fun and social vibe is what brings everyone down to the courts. “People from all over Australia come to play in these events, some of the elite players travelling from Cairns, Mackay and Rockhampton, who all stay in the precinct over the weekend,” says Brett.

Off the courts, there are a number of interactive activities between players and spectators, including best server out of the crowd, as well as local DJs playing during sets to keep the party kicking on. Escape sandy shoes and perch yourself somewhere on the 500-seat arena, before hitting Surfers central. When players are all served out, and the winners have slammed their last ball into the sand, everyone will make their way to the official event sponsor venue, Melbas, for the presentation, some cool drinks and a great time. “The post-event is about getting people together in a social environment and topping off the tour with a good night,” says Brett. The speed and agility are there, sure. But this sporting event isn’t like tennis, basketball or any other in the state. The Gold Coast Beach Volleyball Tour is about sun, sand and being social in the most spirited setting of the Gold Coast. Stretch out, warm up and get cool because this year’s event will be hotter than ever.

G:link, just in time for summer holidays Say farewell to summer holiday traffic and hello to the fastest route to the beach.

S

ummer-time craze means summer-time crowds, which leads to a lot of traffic and a big hunt for parking spaces. As temperature and tempers rise, the last thing we want is wasted time in the car, longing for that ocean breeze. The Gold Coast’s brand new, up and running G:link is the answer as it takes passengers from Southport and Broadbeach straight through to the Gold Coast Highway and onto the sand in Surfers Paradise. Leave the car keys at home; you’ll be setting up your beach camp much quicker this year. Emma Gow, Marketing Manager of KDR, the company behind the project’s construction, says the G:link has been well received by Gold Coast locals and visitors since its inception in July 2014. “We’re seeing a great response from locals so far and we’re looking forward to seeing growing numbers in the school holidays,” says Emma. “Students are big users of our system with two of the main Gold Coast tertiary institutions right next

to some of the stations, but we’re also seeing a lot of tourists and senior citizens on board and even professionals going from meeting to meeting or just out to lunch”. Locals, workers, families and urban explorers are capitalising on the cutting-edge tram system, which came about in order to satisfy the growing city’s transport needs. This shiny, sleek Gold Coast tramline isn’t quite as new as the initial concept. It was brainstormed back in the 1990s between the Queensland Government and the City of Gold Coast who underscored the importance of a long-term solution in managing the region’s growing population. The congested traffic scenario was the scary potential that catapulted this forward-thinking enterprise. The innovative KDR company combined their tram operational experience, design capabilities and engineering and construction services to envision a tram line just for Gold Coasters, tracing the sand and waterways like the sensational stream of people along the Surfers Paradise Foreshore. A

big view of the city for a small ticket price. There are 16 stops between Broadbeach Pacific Fair Shopping Centre and the Gold Coast University Hospital and Griffith University, all strategically located to integrate the business, tourism and local urban districts. “We will be running a normal service on Christmas Day to help everyone get around, whether that’s travelling between Christmas gatherings or those who are heading down to the beach,” says Emma. “If you’re lucky, you might even see Santa cooling off in an air-conditioned tram after a busy night delivering Christmas presents.” The only bottleneck summer-time lovers will see this year is that of a chilled drink whilst stretched on the sand, with a smile on their face and extra time on their watch. T

he emerald waves curling onto the gold sand sends an echo tumbling through Cavill Mall, as it showers the precinct with the smell of salt and summer.

If you can’t hear the liquid percussion of the waves, you’ll be listening to a live music act down on the Foreshore, or the animated chatter spilling out from the open arena of bars and restaurants, which by nightfall casts a twinkling ambiance of wine glasses and lights over the strip. Salt is in the air as well on the plate, with a huge range of seafood and modern Australian specialty restaurants lining The Esplanade, which capture the seaside essence of a food lover’s paradise. Arguably Queensland’s most vibrant city, this precinct is also home to a myriad of music, sports and cultural events in every season of the year. After nearly a century of enamoured tourists and loyal locals, it’s clear Surfers Paradise is a city for the senses that only gets better with age.

Seeing Surfers Paradise in a new light Since its inception in 1933, Surfers Paradise has been evolving and the last couple of years are no exception. This iconic city is looking better than ever, taking the Foreshore upgrades and Gold Coast Light Rail in its stride with an invigorated confidence. Holiday goers, residents and Gold Coast’s homegrown can now access the centre of Surfers Paradise quicker and more conveniently than ever before with the Light Rail, from the edges of Southport or the busy streets of Broadbeach. This unique transport system is designed especially for Gold Coast visitors and locals, following a coastal

36

Precinct Magazine / Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast

route from Broadbeach to Main Beach, before peeling off towards the business district, Southport. The circuit of 14 trams leaves one of the 16 stations approximately every seven and ten minutes during the day on weekdays and weekends respectively, with trams continuing all night on the weekends to take diners and nightlife revelers home safely. The G:link system incorporates the quiet convenience of Melbourne’s trams with the speed and low-cost of Sydney’s inner-city trains, reflecting the Gold Coast’s growing population and developing cultural identity that demands a quicker way to explore. As the route’s central district, Surfers Paradise was heavily impacted by construction and traffic disturbance throughout the project. Hence it was with the great pleasure of locals, traders and tourists that the project’s completion brought with it a completely new energy. Along with the dramatic decrease in noise, the precinct is now visually revitalised, with Surfers Paradise Boulevard newly liberated from concrete barriers and hard hats. Recently re-opened Cavill Avenue is streaming with new life and friendly faces enjoying the city’s fresh look. In late September, the Light Rail carried its onemillionth passenger, a fantastic achievement for a transport system that was less than two months old. As recognition for its successful integration into a highly occupied environment with maximum sustainability achieved, the Light Rail project was recently awarded the ISCA Infrastructure Sustainability Project Award through McConnell Dowell.

The success of this project is reflected in the precinct’s revived urban vibe and its growing population of tourists from all around the world, which changes as frequently as the ocean tides. This is the same Surfers Paradise as it has always been, only better.

Forward-thinking Foreshore The $25 million Foreshore upgrade in Surfers Paradise was completed in 2011 and was met with equal satisfaction by the city. While the Light Rail has reconnected the heart of the city with its urban counterparts, the Foreshore redevelopment was first to interlace Surfers Paradise’s street life vivacity with the gentle vibe of its sand dunes. Surfers Paradise is matchless in terms of brickmeets-beach, which turns high-end shoppers and suit-clad businessmen into beach goers within minutes. The upgrade completely opened up the Foreshore area with safer crossing facilities and better footpaths and beach access. The number of public barbeque and picnic areas serves as a testament to an outdoor-loving city, areas that are shaded by stunning Pandanus trees and clean garden features that further articulate the theme of urban living in a natural paradise.

Clear vision for a clean city The distinct and connective design of Surfers Paradise is harmonious with the City of Gold Coast Council's Bold Future Vision for the city that was launched in 2009. The key element of the project sees Surfers Paradise selected as the true heart of the Gold Coast, and is based on themes that address leading by example, cutting-edge design, safety, interconnectedness and nature. So far, Surfers Paradise is hitting high notes with each goal, and will continue to do so into the future. The changes that have occurred in the last 30 years in the precinct are a benchmark for the innovative transformation to come, led by a forward-thinking council and an inspiring population. But the heart and soul of this city remains steadfast, improving with every pulse. Now is the perfect time to let the sensory experience of Surfers Paradise envelop you. After all, summer is a song that this city sings so well. One city, many changes, endless attractions and a whole lot of personality.

Retail Therapy Uncovering the hidden gems of Surfers Paradise

S

urfers Paradise has it all when it comes to shopping, but did you know about the more unique, one-of-a-kind retailers offering up something a little different? We’ve handpicked three gems in the area that range from a cooler-than-cool vintage store, to a shop that offers one-on-one consultations to assist you with clothes AND confidence, and a brand new hair salon that delights in a very different kind of ideology.

Exquisite life This resort-inspired fashion shop not only offers a beautiful range of swimwear and lifestyle apparel, but it also acts as a style studio, meaning you can book a one-on-one consultation with owner and long-time fashion boutique retailer, Tracey Erin. “Selling swimwear and providing fitting services to women, I discovered a great number of women displayed anxiety when heading down the path of selecting a swimsuit, it is akin to traversing a field dotted with landmines that need to be navigated. We humans are funny creatures!” muses Tracey. “I saw a problem and an opportunity within it and a way to add more value, so I conducted my own study and research with my customers visiting from around the world, from all walks of life, with the aim to provide a solution to help them break free, break through and shine. The style studio is the next evolutionary step to provide a complete fashion lifestyle experience and service for my target customers.” A consultation with Tracey can make a world of difference to your confidence when it comes to getting back into that swimsuit for summer. As Tracey says, it is about finding the joy of

38

acceptance of who you are, and put the fun, the play, and your own creativity and passion into not only your dress and image style, but your lifestyle too. “I would like my clients to feel confident, so they feel excited, so they want to go out with themselves and show the world who they are.” The personal attention truly makes this a unique shopping spot. Tracey’s years of retail experience, and her warm demeanour and background in human resources comes together beautifully to create a shopping – and lifestyle – experience like no other. “When it comes to fitting and styling to body shapes, we opt to focus on the journey and the experience the customer is having, not outcomes. We embrace good old-fashioned service, where the customer is treated as an individual not a number or statistic. There is genuine sincerity about the comments shared and you won’t always hear what you want to, rather comments to help you break through where you are stuck. You have the freedom to accept or refuse what is offered or suggested, there is no compulsion.” The shop offers collections from Finch, Maaji, Jets, Sunseeker, Holster and Finz among others, with bikini separates, one-piece swimsuits, covers ups and resort lifestyle apparel. If you want dedicated attention with a superb selection of apparel, look no further than Tracey and her team at Exquisite Life. www.exquisitelife.com.au Shop 46 Circle on Cavill Surfers Paradise Blvd (07) 5592 5233

Arkive Vintage Arkive Vintage is the ultimate shop for uncovering vintage pieces that can look oh so cool with a few modern wardrobe edits, or simply worn in all their original glory. Much like its name suggests, this gem is an archive of eclectic and on-trend vintage clothing, accessories and homewares spanning from the 1920s to 1990s. Making their start in London in 2009 as permanent traders at Brick Lane's world renowned Vintage Market in the very cool East End, Arkive Vintage was also supplying pieces to Topshop's largest store in London's famous Oxford Street. In 2012, the first retail store was opened in Australia - a treasure trove of goodies located in an offbeat arcade in the middle of Surfers Paradise. Stocking original vintage pieces, most are left in their original state and some are brought up to date with clever customisation. The store also stocks new products like bow ties and sunglasses in classic fabrics and shapes that give a nod to days gone by. Products are handpicked and sourced from suppliers in Europe, UK and USA. Rest assured that particular attention is paid to quality, condition and style. “Arkive Vintage prides itself on stocking the best vintage grade and most on-trend items possible. We really enjoy taking our customers on a journey when they enter the shop, to help them find great pieces with a bit of history that also have a shelf life - in that they stand the test of time both in style and quality” says Managing Director Angie Varnam. “Living in an age where there is a lot of fast, disposable, mass produced fashion, we think there is something a bit more special about vintage finds. We understand that some people don't have the time or access to 'dig' around shops, which is why we launched our website. You can discover some amazing vintage pieces (over 600 to be exact!), but you get to do it at your own leisure from the comfort of your home and we post worldwide.” arkivevintage.com Shop 43 Centre Arcade 3131 Surfers Paradise Blvd Surfers Paradise 0401 649 199

follow hair studio While not exactly under the “retail” banner, we simply couldn’t go past this new hair salon on River Drive in Surfers Paradise. With a depth and breadth of skill and experience that equals a combined 60 years between owners Jo, John and Kathy, this is one hair salon with a difference. For starters, they are “anti-salon”! “We have what you would call an anti-salon culture, we strive to create a space that is a home away from home for our clients, rather than ‘salon’”, smiles Jo. The ‘anti-salon’ is a new age way of hairdressing being adopted by salons in major cities like New York, London and Melbourne that aims to make clients feel comfortable, and not just another number in a busy salon. The space is certainly a reflection of that sentiment. Jo wanted to create something that was organic and inspired by Scandinavian design – simplistic, minimalist and functional – ensuring that she kept the lofty feel of the space by keeping the original hard wooden floors and retro window fittings which exposes the view of Budd’s Beach. The result is a salon that is natural, warm and has you feeling comfortable and relaxed the minute you step inside. The team at FHS are a young, creative and skilled group of individuals who are passionate about what they do. All are trained in the FHS methodology, which ensures they are kept up to date with styles influenced by current and

40

Precinct Magazine / Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast

emerging trends in fashion and beauty. Their skills, passion and ideology are drawing an ever growing and loyal clientele. And if you want to know what the hottest hair trend will be this summer, Jo dishes: “Ok so the Bob is nothing new, it's been around for years. But it has made a return appearance for the summer season and has a new, contemporary twist. This cut needs to be worn confidently at jaw length and needs to be sharp but still have a choppy texture towards the ends of the hair, to stop it from looking too 'mummsy'”. (Aka Lara Bingle and Emma Stone, pictured!) To keep the style on trend, Jo suggests playing with and enhancing your hair's natural texture. The style looks its best with some movement and a deep side part that is effortlessly flicked over to the side. “You should, if you haven't already, invest in a sea salt spray. My favourite product is Kevin Murphy's Hair Resort Spray. Spray this in whilst the hair is damp, twist the hair into about 6 sections (depending on the thickness of the hair), allow to dry or diffuse dry softly, shake it out and spray some more Hair Resort Spray. I promise it's that easy.” Appointments are crucial if you want to get in to see the team at FHS, so book ahead! followhairstudio.com 4/19 River Drive, Surfers Paradise (right above Bumbles Café) (07) 5526 9888

Making a Mark The culture-centric diners of Surfers Paradise have another reason to be excited for summer.

T

o those locals and travellers who’ve had their eyes on the horizon for another new development on the coast: this is for you.

Though our city’s history of surf, sand and fishing shack chronicles is what makes Surfers Paradise so unique, and arguably the beacon of the Sunshine State, the crowd that chooses purse over pool for a good night out are constantly on the hunt for a new, hip bar or modern restaurant to frequent. Luckily for this crowd, Surfers Paradise will again welcome some fresh innovation and contemporary vibes with the arrival of two brand new urban food and wine establishments in the centre of the city. Welcome cravers of culture, to Clifford’s Grill & Lounge and the Walrus Social House, both part of the Watermark Hotel & Spa Gold Coast’s exciting new development. Both venues will sit patrons in a cutting-edge street-style environment, with the sophistication of New York’s Soho district and the distinct salty smell and balmy air of Surfers Paradise. This project has been designed to integrate the best of two vibes: beach bliss and city chic. Clifford’s Grill & Lounge, named after the street and as a tribute to 19th century world-class rower Thomas Clifford, is a modern eatery with the flame

www.surfersparadise.com

of a grill house and the contemporary competence of an inner city bar. And by flame, we mean redhot, like those firing up from the centrepiece tenburner grill in the open-plan kitchen, where diners can catch the heat and aroma of the tapas-style menu being brought to life. The menu is telling of its intent: social grazing and light taste testing ideal for groups of friends toasting the day with a post-work cocktail or sunset beer. Clifford’s Executive Chef and highly trained team are excited to work with the hottest of flavours to satisfy an atlas of tastebuds, and the bar staff won’t be far behind, working with a huge range of worldly wine and liquors. Whereas Clifford’s will be the perfect place for a sit-down and graze, Walrus Social House will expect a stand-up, get-out and socialise from its visitors, as suggests the name. A one-stop entertainment hub come Bali cabana lounge, Walrus is for friends, work mates and social butterflies to get down to live music, have a play in the discreet gaming lounge or grab something green from the health-conscious café. Or all three. Chuckle if you will, but its name is in fact reflective of an era in which alcoholic beverages were scarce on the coast, and the township found itself wanting of social draft. An entrepreneurial character named

‘Bosun’ saw an opportunity in this dry market, and upon his old paddle wheeler, the SS Walrus, began turning locals’ sugar cane into Walrus Rum. For tradition’s sake then, Walrus offers a drinks menu generous with international and signature rum-based cocktails, the perfect liquor confection to accompany the exciting tapas menu. Grazing and lazing are best served ice-cold. Walrus’ café menu is a little more shape than sugar, with a fun menu of healthy snacks and small meals, as well as fresh juice, smoothies, and barista brewed coffee from morning until night. Take your eyes off the horizon for a while, because the Watermark Hotel & Spa Gold Coast has anchored two of the season’s most exciting new establishments. What’s more, the G:link stops right at its front door, which makes setting sail into the evening and heading safely home again a nautical breeze. Class and culture, salt and sophistication, with an emphasis on interaction, taste and relaxation, the Watermark’s development will be just what the coast was waiting for. And with summer now upon us, it really is just in time.

A foodie's passage through paradise I’ve learnt something recently. Surfers Paradise isn’t all fish, chips and chocolate ice cream.

S

urfers Paradise is thirsty for culture. And while the hefty pizza parlours and sushi bars cater well to the thousands of worldly visitors striding through the city each day, it has another culinary culture that praises quality produce, hidden boutique settings, and delicious holiday health. Gourmet, paleo, gluten-free, vegan, local, organic, raw and other trending tastes can now all be found on Surfers Paradise’s menus. It’s time to savour the true foodie’s paradise. And instead of rushing to this goldmine of goodies without a plan of action, I have tracked down the crème of the crop, the best restaurants and cafés that you should visit, so you can spend less time roaming and more time relishing. Bon Appétit.

Bumbles Café Bumbles is a pleasant paradox. Whilst this 25-yearold River Street café is grounded on localism, eating here is closer to a trip down Alice in Wonderland’s rabbit hole than it is your regular beachside breakfast. Outside it’s all umbrellas, manicured hedges and young mums flipping through fashion magazines and children ducking and darting through the waterside parkland. Enter to an open white room of polished floorboards, pinstripes, and

boatshed charm, bewitched by the smell of toast and melting brioche. Next step you’re in a wonderland of spinning teacups, jars of sleeping roses, fluorescent faux taxidermy and upside-down red feather boa lamps clutching the ceiling like bats in fancy dress. Venture further into a little land of secret rooms themed by colour, including a candle-lit library for pensive picnics. It’s the menu that turns us back to Earth. Owner Kate sources ingredients from local Gold Coast growers who frequent her café, a relationship she deems essential to sustaining local employment and food quality. As well as this, Kate’s recent visit to Tasmania’s Agrarian Kitchen taught her the technique of whole pig snout-to-tail preparation to minimise waste and endorse sustainable, ethical farming. This has shaped the coming weeks’ offerings of house-cured bacon, terrine and sausages. Despite sitting in Wonderland, this is still Surfers Paradise so health-conscious flavour doesn’t stray far. The breakfast menu treats the usual avocado, eggs and bacon marriage with care and rustic presentation. But step off the path for Bangalow pork and green apple sausage or the fluffy ricotta pancakes glowing in honeycomb butter to spice up your tea party.

The dairy-free quinoa bircher with flaked coconut and fresh fruit is a bubbly start to the morning. And likewise of the staff, whose bright rise-andshine attitudes and attentiveness has any white rabbit pausing to enjoy the experience. What’s sweeter, Bumbles harbours six years’ worth of urban bee-keeping on its roofs, which can produce up to six kilos of auburn honey from local flowerbeds in two days, sold inside. Sweet. Two worlds in a Surfers Paradise hideaway, perfect for functions, families, casual coffee or a date. A very important date. Black Coffee Lyrics You hear Black Coffee Lyrics before you see it. Scaling the cement slab stairway above the fluorescent posse of Surfers Paradise Boulevard Asian noodle stores and into the shadowed second level alleyway, one pursues the sultry whining of Hendrix’s guitar into a den rippling with candlelight and midday bad boy rapture. While Bumbles is skipping through meadows and making daisy chains, Black Coffee Lyrics is The SUMMER EDITION / 2014

food & lifestyle cracking its knuckles and beating around in Dr Martens. And give your eyes a moment to adjust if you didn’t bring a torch. Dark walls and darker timber sculpt the smooth and sexy aura of the room, flicking sunlight off the battery of liquor bottles reaching tall behind the bar. Its abundance is pleasing to the bombshell backpackers who just stumbled in, but perilously tempting to workers on lunch break. Recess to risqué in seconds. After ordering an American diner-style Washington DC sandwich, I feel obliged to twang my accent or change my socks to white such is the Chicago jazzesque vibe and interior. The white wall adjacent tells a travel tale of permanent marker scribble, punctuated with dusty candelabras and framed pin-up girls, and meets head-on with some messy bookshelves, and finally another exposed brick wall backing some high tables just begging for a drinking game. And while this place must be the pioneer of tats and beards, my waiter’s attentive and friendly service would have any mother’s tick of approval. Black Coffee Lyrics is esteemed for its barista bravo in working those Byron Bay coffee beans into earthy liquid gold, and despite the post-morn hour, I sink two soy piccolos before the boys can say shot. The breakfast menu names are cheeky and the dishes punchy with flavour. I Just Want Eggs is a killer cue for eggs done your way, or maybe the Big Bear Salmon of smoked salmon, caper cheese and basil cream better suits the morning growl. Cheddar, relish, eggs, chorizo and other artisan favourites play their role in other culinary aliases like First Timer, Penny Lane, and The Boxer. The Washington DC sandwich, one of the many American-inspired rolls and sandwiches, is a vego’s walk on the wild side with plump roasted pumpkin and capsicum layered in pesto and fresh rocket. Some other sandwich successes include the Coney Island of cocktail prawn, dill aioli and pickled celery, and the Harlem Club with poached chicken breast, crispy pancetta, Dijon and avocado. Although a little pricey, these monsters don’t leave room for much else. Except perhaps a signature cocktail. The Pineapple Express, The Big Apple and The Dark Knight are all in the exclusive club of in-house booze brilliance, which are dangerous when on a roll to recruit unassuming workers on break. Cocktail lovers, beware. It’s black, it’s coffee, and by the sound of the bluesy waves of bass and vocals pouring out the speakers, it’s lyrics too. Wash down, wax up and get down here, but expect to leave with a little scuff on your shoes and a little Muddy in your Waters. Hunter & Harvest You’d be forgiven for brushing the name into the ongoing obsession of food industry idioms. Eating www.surfersparadise.com

establishments all around the country are cropping up with some allusion to open, green pastures, plucking the word ‘harvest’ from the dictionary and sewing it straight into their menu claims. The times they are a’foraging, and it seems every chef and his apprentice is grabbing the garden guide to realign their food with the earth. So visiting Hunter & Harvest in the centre of a city whose weapon of choice is beach umbrella over shovel, and where there’s more high-heel tracks than gumboot prints, you’d be forgiven again for questioning how much harvesting can be done in this beachside concrete play land. But huddled like a secret shire away from the glitz and glamour of the strip, this Orchid Ave health haven of fresh, local produce, alternative milks (high-five coconut and almond!), raw treats and organic goods was not named for the benefit of good hashtagging. Café owner and mother of two-year-old Hunter (the café’s inspiration for its playground-esque interior and name) Monique has contagious enthusiasm and smiling eyes, and makes this association simple. Harvest is about getting back to the Earth through eating. The paleo diet has notable influence on the menu, and organic, gluten, sugar and dairy-free are notes of a health conscious hymn sung with enough passion to silence the dance club music that rattles the street by night. Monique’s son Hunter is present in the café’s city park come playground setting, with a tooth-white beach cruiser parked on the feature wall of long grass, books and bottles of red behind customers’ heads, all canopied by an urban canopy of leaves whistling from the ceiling. Does relief have a smell? Among the usual Surfers Paradise breakfast and lunch offerings of bready mains and fried bits of this and that, Hunter & Harvest is a coffee-aromatic escape, an experience of balance and flavour, quality produce and warm service. Smells like clean spirit. The Harvest Bruschetta (V) is a promising forklicker, dripping in sticky balsamic glaze, reminiscent of a summer barbeque on the tongue, with wilted spinach, roasted tomato and a hearty mixture of mushroom and onion lolling across three pieces of toasted bread. For those who are kicking it carne style, the Breakfast Burrito of grass-fed beef mince, tomato and avocado is a goer. I’d bet my bottom bonbon that the wheat-free pancakes with caramelised banana, organic maple syrup, vanilla bean ice cream and fruit would be a sweet-tooth’s kryptonite, along with the cabinet of guilt-free raw treats, which Monique makes herself. Raw balls of mega choc, key-lime, and peanut-butter flavours are no challenge for a girl who palettes what she preaches. As expected, acai bowls and a generous list of organic dairy-free option smoothies and juices are available for those on the run, or for the businessmen who’ve scaled down from the Surfers Paradise skyline for a quick taste of the Earth. The coffee is of good quality, especially when teamed with a raw ball for $5.

The café also sells an impressive range of organic grocery goods, including paper bags of Himalayan salts, organic soup mixes, raw nuts and coconut, as well as different cooking oils and alternative milks. Hunter & Harvest is not in the long line of cafés that are claiming connection to health with a lollipop behind their back. Hunter & Harvest, with its inspiring, ethical and hand-on-heart commitment to health, has finally introduced a foodie fad to Surfers Paradise, free of sweet nasties, and making gumboots look like good again. Urban Fix Espresso It must be said that Urban Fix Espresso is an easy café. There are no parking challenges, no offensive or too-techno tracks on the morning playlist, no questionable is-it-a-garnish, is-ita-weed ingredients that customers struggle pronouncing. This is coffee, some Turkish toast and a chat in Capri on Via Roma’s market precinct. An urban espresso fix, if you will. There is something nice about overhearing the small talk of old neighbours having coffee together, which doubles as a Gold Coast property update. This is the stomping ground of Gold Coast’s business titans, of just-cleaned cars and Lorna Jane clad women. Even the dogs greet each other with class. But the pace is slow and steady with

an intoxicating smell of Arabica bean and butter, and the only baseline you’ll hear is the turning pages of the newspaper. The avocado and poached eggs is a mini-mountain of breakfast beauty, and similarly everyone’s favourite Eggs Benedict is generous enough to defer lunch. For those wanting to utilise their Lorna Jane wear, there’s muesli and fruit salad options, or thick doughy slabs of honeyed banana bread for ‘necessary’ carb loading. Bring down your pooch, the paper, and the latest stock report for a quick coffee fix in a quiet urban setting. Too easy. Blackboard Coffee Roasters It must be a right of passage that guys who make coffee for the first time grow a beard. I am well aware of this exhausted stereotype, but seriously. Wine and cheese; bread and butter; coffee and beard. The guys at Blackboard Coffee Roasters probably wrote the rule themselves, because these milk jugbranching, bearded bandits zig-zagging around the tiny open-space mini-roastery in Capri on Via Roma do not miss a beat in creating beautifully balanced coffee and making it look good.

factory-like, open-air interior of Capri on Via Roma, with trendy stained timber settings and hanging bulbous lights like industrial tulips hanging from exposed pylons, illuminating the roastery and its hive of barista buzz. A friendly guy takes your order, another to grind, froth and pour, and another to handle the buttery baking goods being loaded into the front cabinet. One particular tray holds a family of donuts with syringes of chocolate crème jutting out of them, waiting to be oozed into the doughy centre as soon as its ordered. The tables are those tiny square ones that I suspect are designed to hold the weight of coffee cups and not much else. Or perhaps to bring you and your neighbour closer, all the better for inspecting the crisp execution of a liquorice-black, silky Santa Clara Macchiato, or a creamy Bonsoy latte. The smell is divine, and has early-start workers loitering the premises long after reaping their brew. Hunting a good bean? Look no further than this clever little spot. Whether the roast is fresh and handpicked, the bakery goods are divine and only the razors are ignored.
