Surfers Paradise: Summer Surf Safety
N
othing epitomises summer holidays like a day at the beach. Soaking up the sun on Surfers Paradise’s white sandy shores and then cooling off with a dip in the salty ocean water are some of life’s simplest pleasures. To make sure you and your family have the most enjoyable summer holiday possible this year, it’s important to remember these summer surf safety messages, provided by the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club. 1. Always swim between the FLAGS and observe all safety signs. Find the red and yellow flags and swim between them. Look at, understand and obey the safety signs. Ask a lifeguard or life saver for advice before you enter the water. Get a friend to swim with you. Stick your hand up, stay calm and call for help if you get into trouble.
hydrated - avoid fizzy and alcoholic drinks that will dehydrate you. 3. Remember that sunburn is forever! Although the red skin will eventually peel and maybe if you’re lucky, give way to a tan, the effects of sunburn are everlasting. Repeated exposure to sunburn increases your risk of developing melanoma; our strong rays mean you can develop sunburn in as little as 15 minutes, so be sure to heed the slip, slop, slap warning. 4. Keep an eye on kids. Lifeguards are there to watch over you and your children and help out in the event of an emergency, but ultimately the safety of your children should be your number one priority when visiting the beach. Make sure you keep your children within your view at all times and ensure they understand and follow the summer surf safety guidelines.
A great way to introduce kids to surf safety is through Surf Life Saving Queensland’s Nippers program. Nippers aims to give kids aged 5 – 13 confidence in a fun, safe, beach environment. Passing tests involving swimming, body boarding, beach sprints, dolphin-diving and spotting a rip will not only ensure your kids will have the skills they need to stay safe in the surf, but it will also provide them with an opportunity to make new friends and develop their own identities as they mature. For more information on the Nippers program visit www.lifesaving.com.au
2. Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide & Slurp! SLIP on a long sleeve shirt to get the best protection from the sun’s rays. SLOP on some SPF30+ sunscreen at least 15 minutes before you go out in the sun. Don’t forget to reapply every two hours after that! SLAP on a hat - a wide-brim hat will provide the best protection to your head and face. SEEK some shade, particularly between the hours of 10am and 3pm when the sun is at its hottest. SLIDE on a pair of UV rated sunglasses. SLURP down enough water to keep you

1 | Paradise Resort Wins Big
2 | Surfers Paradise wins with QHA Awards
5 | LIGHT RAIL Update
Surfers Paradise’s most popular family resort, Paradise Resort, recently received the inaugural award for Industry Innovation at the Queensland Hotels Association (QHA) Awards for Excellence. Created to highlight the resort’s unique approach to thinking outside the box, Paradise Resort took out the top spot for developing a new product that pushes the boundaries within the industry.
Along with Paradise Resort, several other Surfers Paradise establishments have won top awards at the Queensland Hotel Association Awards for Excellence. In the restaurant field, the newly redeveloped Helm Bar and Bistro, on the Nerang River, took out the top position for Best Casual Dining venue, whilst Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort & Spa employee Andrew Fraser received the high accolade of Best Kitchen Employee.
The G: is set to take passengers from mid-2014, running every seven and a half minutes in peak times between Gold Coast University Hospital, through Southport, Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach.
Resort General Manager, David Brook, was thrilled that the QHA had recognised the efforts of Paradise Resort and its owners for innovation and stepping outside the boundaries to reinvigorate their visitor experience.
In a win for the accommodation industry, Hotel Grand Chancellor, on Hanlan Street and Surfers Paradise Boulevard, took home the award for Best Superior Hotel Accommodation in the four and a half star category.
“It was an honour to have won this award,” he said. “It’s nice to have all the hard work and planning validated with this special recognition.”
3 | Hog’s Breath Café Moves into Soul
The QHA Awards for Excellence Program is designed to provide a forum for the public recognition of excellence in individual and group achievement by Queensland hotels. The resort was also celebrating its win for the third year in a row (and five years out of six!) as readers of Holidays with Kids Magazine (HWK) voted Paradise Resort the best in Australia, in the 4 Star and Under category.

Legendary rib and steakhouse, Hog’s Breath Café, has made the move into a fresh new location in the Soul dining precinct. Open for lunch and dinner, seven days a week, it joins a number of other popular restaurants, making Soul a delicious dining destination in Surfers Paradise.
4 | Christmas Market The Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets will be on throughout the holiday season. For dates and times, visit www.facebook.com/ SurfersParadiseBeachfrontMarkets or www.surfersparadise.com/beachfront-markets
In October, trams began testing in Southport, and track laying over the Cypress Avenue and Surfers Paradise Boulevard intersection marked the last of the 52 intersections completed across 13 kilometres of the Gold Coast light rail route. Trams are planned to progressively test the system as overhead wires go live through Surfers Paradise in early 2014. To coincide with trams testing on the G:link system, a Gold Coast light rail safety video has been launched to the community. The safety video was produced to educate locals and visitors on how to safely interact with the light rail system. GoldLinQ CEO Phil Mumford said now The G: was testing on the Gold Coast road network, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians needed to stay alert, stay safe and obey the simple rules of Stop, Look and Listen. All road users must remember: • Never run out in front of trams. • You won’t always hear the tram coming so make sure you look both ways before crossing the tracks. • Stay alert! Don’t be distracted by music, games or phone messages.

• Step over the rail to avoid slipping, tripping or getting your heel caught in the rail. • When driving it’s imperative to always obey the road rules and signs. Trams use the same traffic light signals through intersections as other road traffic. You can see the Gold Coast light rail safety video on the GoldLinq website at www.goldlinq.com.au
6 | Marriott Lagoon Welcomes New Clownfish The fish that reside in the iconic tropical saltwater lagoon at the award-winning Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort & Spa have new friends to play with this summer. The tropical fish population has swollen to almost 400 after 70 assorted fish were added including clownfish, trigger fish, purple tangs, moon wrasse, red goat fish, banner fish and angel fish. With over 30 varieties of tropical fish now residing in the saltwater lagoon with manmade reef and sandy beaches, Marriott's director of engineering, Stephen Coombs, says there are a lot of competing personalities. “The clown and trigger fish are the dominant fish of the pool with very different 'fish-onalities' to the rest of the residents,” he said. “These fish are first to accept being hand-fed at feeding time and the trigger fish love to play - the larger ones can be seen doing laps of the pool from the guest rooms.”
www.surfersparadise.com
To see these beautiful new creatures for yourself, we recommend lunch at Citrique, followed by a walk around the lagoon.

Shelley Craft rediscovers the joy of summer in Surfers Paradise
B
orn and raised in Brisbane, Shelley Craft has spent so much time on our sunny shores she’s practically a local. Her grandmother had a house here on the Coast, and the family would come down on most weekends. Later, after graduating high school, Shelley moved to the Gold Coast where she worked in retail for a while, before catching the acting bug and getting a job at Movie World. The rest, as they say, is history. Now approaching almost 20 years in showbiz, Shelley is one of Australia’s best-recognised and most-loved television personalities. Her first big break came as co-host of the

children’s show, Saturday Disney in 1996. She later went on to become a travel reporter for The Great Outdoors, and most recently, has become the face of one of this year’s most popular television shows, The Block. Soon we’ll be welcoming Shelley back to Surfers Paradise as the host of the 2013 Carols on the Beach event. Along with some of Australia’s most talented performers including Frankie J Holden, The Voice finalists, Caterina Torres and Simon Meli, international superstars and US Motown legends, The Drifters, will also be making an appearance. You definitely won’t want to miss this!

COVER STORY
We caught up with Shelley recently to get the inside scoop on Carols on the Beach and found out how much fun she’s been having rediscovering Surfers Paradise. P: Shelley, after years of city living in Sydney and Melbourne, you’re now based in Byron Bay. How have you found the change of pace? S: I love it! It’s the perfect balance to my crazy work life. I can come home, kick off the shoes, wipe off the make up and not think about anything other than my family, until the next trip. P: Now that you’re in closer proximity to the Gold Coast, will you be bringing the girls here to show them all the sights and sounds from your own childhood? S: We do spend a bit of time on the Gold Coast, it’s our ‘big smoke’ now. It is always a trip down memory lane when we come to town. P: What’s one of your favourite childhood memories of Surfers Paradise? S: I vividly remember going to Ripley’s Believe it or Not; in fact some of those images still haunt me to this day. Grundy’s was also a family favourite, and Pancakes in Paradise. P: Surfers Paradise has undergone a huge transformation lately; what do you think of its new and improved look? S: I feel like Surfers and I grew up together. I started visiting the Coast when I was about three years old, and it was a wonderful innocent town in the late 70s. Through the 80s we both suffered a little from bad fashion but we were coming of age. And of course I went to Schoolies! I then lived and worked in the heart of Surfers in 94/95, frequented the clubs and restaurants and worshipped the beach. I’ve celebrated many family occasions in Surfers and now 20 years on, I find I am back, a little more grown up, a little more sophisticated and a little more polished. Still a kid at heart though and Surfers still has so many wonderful things to keep me and my family entertained. P: You’ve previously hosted Carols in the Domain in Sydney. How do you think our Carols on the Beach will stack up to that? S: Well, it will be a lot more casual that’s for sure! Domain is an incredible experience, but I am sure our Carols on the Beach will be a beautiful, intimate family fun night, filled with wonderful music and great surprises. P: There’s some pretty great acts lined up – who are you most looking forward to seeing perform live?
www.surfersparadise.com
S: I can’t wait to see The Drifters! Motown and Christmas … it’s the perfect mix. P: Are you much of a singer yourself? Will you be getting into the Christmas spirit and singing along to the carols too? S: Oh no, I have a terrible singing voice! If I could sing – you’d know about it! I remember hosting a carols event on the steps of Parliament House in Melbourne and I actually turned my microphone off so no one would have to hear me!
To see the gorgeous Shelley Craft in person, visit Carols on the Beach on Sunday 22 December from 6.30pm. For all the details on Carols on the Beach, please see our feature on page 12.
Shelley’s Surfers Paradise Top Five
P: What’s your favourite Christmas carol? S: The Christmas Song is definitely up there, and I also love Let It Snow. I have been lucky enough to have a white Christmas and it was truly magical. P: How has Christmas changed for you, now that you are a mother?
Favourite Store: Exquisite Life - lovely swimwear and beach fashion!
S: I am so excited to celebrate Christmas this year. Milla is really pumped to set up the tree and get the party started. Kids truly are the essence of Christmas and I’m sure it will be a beautiful celebration for us this year. P: Aside from Carols on the Beach, there’s some other pretty great stuff happening this Christmas in Surfers Paradise. What do you think your girls would enjoy?
Favourite Attraction: Timezone! Still a favourite!
S: We are planning a trip to the beach cinema for sure. Perhaps a photo with Santa, if the kids aren’t too shy. P: Do you have any special family traditions in your household at Christmas time? S: The Christmas pudding is a real tradition in our family. Who’s making it, who’s taking on the responsibility! It’s an old family recipe and my dad was always the chief pud maker, but it seems my sister has taken charge in the last few years. But the old pudding tins still get flown around the country if we are not going to be together, so that everyone has some feeling of tradition. P: What’s on your list to Santa this year?
Favourite Restaurant: Seaduction is fantastic! Or Benihana with the kids is always fun.
Favourite Watering Hole: Fix Bar at the Hilton
S: A sunny day and all my family in one place. That would be the ultimate Christmas gift for me this year. I have six nieces and nephews and we have never had the whole family in the one place – I think that would be magical! P: Have you been naughty or nice? S: Well ... I guess we’ll have to see when I find out what’s in my Christmas Stocking!
Favourite Outdoor Activity: Definitely the beach!

SURFERS PARADISE AMBASSADOR Profile: Bronwyn Abraham Precinct Magazine recently caught up with this year’s Jupiters Summer Surf Girl, 17 year old Gold Coaster, Bronwyn Abraham, to find out why she loves Surfers Paradise. 1.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. I am an ambitious person in almost all aspects of my life: I like to paint and consider myself quite creative, I am an active member of my Surf Life Saving Club (Surfers Paradise), an active patrolling member, assist in training new life savers to patrol our beaches and have coached the 5 - 7 year olds (greenies) with my dad for the past three years. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Applied Sciences externally through the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (in my second year) and have had an all round love of the beach since I was young.
9. What do you think is Surfers Paradise's best-kept secret? Yoghurt City in Cavill Avenue is one of my favourite frozen yoghurt stores, where you can decorate your favourite flavour frozen yoghurt with lots of lollies and yummy treats. They also support the work we do by offering us a discount, which I think is amazing! 10. Finish this sentence: If you're visiting Surfers Paradise for the first time, don't forget your... Togs and boogie board!
2. What is your favourite thing about Surfers Paradise? The endless opportunities and new experiences. 3. What’s one thing about Surfers Paradise you think the rest of the world should know? That it is an incredibly family friendly environment, and I know this first hand from coaching the Nippers, and previously being one myself. 4. If you could fly any celebrity in the world, living or dead, into Surfers Paradise for a day, who would it be and where would you take them? Beyonce, because I love her dedication to charities, and would love to have her participate in my Nippers. Although it may not be the same as the work she does, for me it is my bread and butter to see the smiles on kids’ faces when they catch waves and finish races. 5. What does your ideal day in Surfers Paradise consist of? A morning with the Nippers, a patrol in the afternoon with my fellow members from patrol 6 and then dinner afterwards to reflect on our highlights of the day with my patrol friends. 6. You are the 2013/2014 Jupiters Summer Surf Girl. Tell us what this means to you. Representing Surfers Paradise as their Jupiters Summer Surf Girl is the most amazing experience; it is a passion of mine to raise funds for my club, to ensure we have enough equipment to perform rescues when needed, to train new life savers, and to coach the Nippers, who are the surf life savers of the future. I was so excited to see all the older girls go through the Summer Surf Girl process when I was still in Nippers, and now it is my opportunity to represent our club. 7.
Summer Surf Safety is a very important message in Australia, especially here on the Gold Coast. What are your top tips for staying safe on the beach this summer? My top tips on the beach are: • If unsure ask a lifeguard or life saver where swimming is the most safe; • Read the information board so you are aware of any dangerous conditions; • Slip – Slop – Slap; • And most importantly, always swim between the red and yellow flags.
8. Surfers Paradise is one of Australia’s top family holiday destinations – why do you think it is so popular with families? I think that there are just so many activities that the whole family can do; whether it’s a day at the beach, surfing, Timezone, Aqua Duck, whale watching, jet boating or maybe some shopping. There are so many possibilities; I can’t imagine why people wouldn’t come!

The Oceanway travels through the heart of Surfers Paradise along the Esplanade and is a great way to discover Surfers by foot, bike, scooter or pram. Fern Street to Narrowneck Surfers Paradise is the tourism heart of the Gold Coast and a walk along the beachfront promises plenty of opportunities to observe the colour and activity of this busy and vibrant destination. From Fern Street turn back towards the ocean and then head northwards along Garfield Terrace. Northcliffe SLSC is a popular spot to stop for a drink, before continuing along Northcliffe Terrace and along a foreshore pathway for the last few hundred metres until you reach the famous Cavill Mall.

ome New Year’s Eve, the Surfers Paradise sky will light up with all the colours of the rainbow in one of the largest fireworks displays in Queensland. For the second year running, the theme will be ‘superheroes’, and kids (big and small!) are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite. There will even be photo opportunities with some of your favourite superheroes before the early fireworks show.
of Spectrum Fireworks promises an absolutely spectacular display, using over 3,400 kilograms of fireworks. Displays are fine tuned in the weeks before the event, but you can be assured of one thing – lots of colour and plenty of noise! Keep an eye out for fireworks in the shape of love hearts, along with huge shimmering gold stars, short rockets and lots of gold, red, purple and pink.
This year’s festivities will include two phenomenal pyrotechnic displays, one at a new time of 8pm, and the other at midnight to ring in the New Year. Both shows will be set to a thumping musical beat, with some of the major hits from 2013 ready to ring out along the Foreshore. Chris Corbee
The party won’t just be limited to New Year’s Eve though, with carnival rides, kid’s slides and even a fortune teller’s zone along the foreshore in the lead up to New Year’s Eve. Come on down from December 28 until January 1 to join in the family fun.
new year's eve www.surfersparadise.com
We recommend the following tips, to make the countdown to 2014 as enjoyable as possible:
• Bring a picnic blanket so you and the family can really get comfortable.
• Decide which vantage point is going to comfortably accommodate your needs and give you the best view of the show. We recommend staking out a spot on the sand between the Soul Building and the Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club.
• Consider leaving the car at home and taking public transport.
• Make reservations for dinner well ahead of time – most restaurants are booked out before New Year’s Eve. You can see the party calendar on page 32 for some suggestions, or simply phone your favourite place to see what they’ve got planned.
• If you are driving, plan ahead with travel routes and parking options. We recommend the Bruce Bishop Car Park on Beach Road – with over 1,600 spaces available and the first two hours free, it’s some of the best value parking in Surfers. T
his year's theme is Myths, Legends and Fairytales; one that is sure to inspire entrants and wow passers by with what will surely be magical sand sculpted creations. Held over 17 days along the Surfers Paradise Foreshore, Australia’s best sand sculptors will create masterpieces in the hopes of winning the coveted championship.
If you want to see the sculpting in action, then be sure to attend the opening weekend, Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 February. Once the sculptures are completed, you can visit any day to admire the masterpieces. You will even get the chance to vote on your favourite sculpture by placing a $1 coin in a voting box that will be located at the front of every sculpture.
The sculptors have free reign with the theme, however the pressure is on to create a seven tonne sculpture in just two days. Sharon Redman, Project Manager and sand sculpting expert, spoke to Precinct about what people can expect to see.
“The People’s Choice Award is considered by the sculptors as the award to win, as it shows them if they have managed to connect with the public,” said Sharon.
“We will usually see a mixture of myths and fairytales. Popular fairytales with the sculptors are: Alice in Wonderland, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and the Beanstalk. Popular myths are Hare and the Rabbit, Greek mythology and Lord of the Rings. We will, however, have to wait and see what sparks their imagination!”

A series of children’s activities will run on every day of the event, including sand art, sand bottles and sculpting workshops, and a sculptor’s demonstration piece. The workshops will give insight into the world of sand sculpting and debunk common misconceptions; such as that beach sand is used to create the sculptures. It is in fact brick sand - and added water - during the compaction stage that holds the sand together.
"The pressure is on to create a seven tonne sculpture in just two days." There will also be the Australia versus the World Sculpting Challenge, whereby two teams, one Australian and the other international, will carve against each other with a pre-arranged theme, with the public to vote on the winner. These sculptures will be interactive so people will get the chance to take pictures in front of the sculptures and appear as if in them. On top of that, the highlight of the championship will be a combined effort of ten professional sculptors working on a 12-tonne sand sculpture for Streets Ice Cream, to be located on the Surfers Paradise Foreshore.

For kids and adults alike, it may just inspire the inner artist! “People find their way into sand sculpting in many different ways. The most common way in Australia is that they attend one of our events and have an interest or inclination to sculpt. Their visit triggers an interest, they approach us and we offer them an opportunity to enter our intern program to learn the art of sculpting. About eight years ago we had only two sand sculptors in Australia – today we have 12 sculptors and of these, around eight would be able to work internationally,” said Sharon. Everyone is welcome to get in on the action with lots of activities for families and children, and night markets will also be open on certain nights. It is expected that around 6,000 spectators daily will flock to the Foreshore over the course of the championships – don’t miss out! The third annual Australian Sand Sculpting Championships presented by Streets Ice Cream commences Friday 14 February along the Surfers Paradise Foreshore.

Chinese New Year 2014: The Year of the Horse A
lthough it’s still unclear as to the exact origins of the Chinese New Year, legend has it that it all started with a fight against a mythical beast named Nian, which is the Chinese word for ‘year’. The stories vary from village to village, but they all have the same common theme. The Nian, a sea-dwelling animal with the body of an ox and the head of a lion, liked to come out at night to prey on and cause damage to people, animals and properties. The village elder advised the villagers to try and ward off the Nian by making loud noises with drums and firecrackers and hanging red paper cutouts and scrolls on their doors, because the Nian is frightened by the colour red. The advice worked, and the villagers conquered the Nian, and the Chinese now celebrate the anniversary of the passing of the Nian, which is Chinese New Year.
40
Precinct Magazine / Surfers Paradise / Gold Coast
The actual date of Chinese New Year changes each year, as it is based on the lunar calendar, as opposed to the Western Gregorian calendar, which is dependent on the Earth’s orbit around the sun. Chinese New Year always falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, generally around the end of January or beginning of February, and celebrations last for 15 days, culminating in the Lantern Festival on the last day. In 2014, The Year of the Horse, Chinese New Year falls on Friday 31 January. Chinese New Year comes with a whole host of traditions, from what to do, to what to wear and what to eat to invite good fortune for the year ahead. Here, we list some of the most recognised traditions with suggestions on how you can try them out for yourself this Chinese New Year!

"Chinese New Year comes with a whole host of traditions, from what to do, to what to wear and what to eat to invite good fortune for the year ahead."
New Year’s Eve Dinner This is generally the most important event on the Chinese New Year calendar. Families will come together to ring in the New Year with a big celebratory dinner, sharing a number of auspicious dishes. Foods served include nian gao, a sticky rice pudding cake which is said to make people “advance toward higher positions and prosperity step by step” and dumplings, which represent wealth and prosperity. There are a number of authentic Chinese restaurants in Surfers Paradise that serve special Chinese New Year banquets. They tend to book out quickly over the Chinese New Year period, so it’s best to make a reservation in advance. To see a list of Chinese restaurants in Surfers Paradise, please visit www.surfersparadise.com
Dragon Dance and Lion Dance The Dragon Dance and Lion Dance are some of the most entertaining events during the Chinese New Year festival. The Dragon Dance involves a group of performers who hold poles making up the head, body and tail of the dragon, dancing
www.surfersparadise.com
in time with the drums, to ward off evil spirits. Sometimes one performer has a ‘Pearl of Wisdom’ on a pole and entices the dragon to follow him, searching for wisdom and knowledge. The Lion Dance is performed by two performers, one as the head of the lion, and the other as the tail. The movement of the head of the lion is supposed to enhance vitality and longevity, while the tail of the lion sweeps away bad fortune and unpleasant things from last year. A mirror is attached to the head of the lion to expel negative energy and evil spirits. Come on down to Cavill Mall on Saturday 1 February to see the Dragon Dance and Lion Dance. For scheduled times, please visit www.surfersparadise.com
Red Packets Red packets are small red envelopes, usually decorated with Chinese symbols for good luck, filled with money. Married adults customarily hand these out to younger children during the New Year period, with the belief that they will suppress evil and bless the children with good health and longevity.
Why not really get into the spirit of Chinese New Year by buying a few red packets and putting a few dollars in them to hand out to the kids? Red packets are usually available at most Asian grocery stores. Try the Oriental Supermarkets located at Beach Road, in the Surfers RSL Centre.

Summer’s Best Fashion Festival
W
arm weather, beautiful bikinis and ontrend resort wear will dominate the Gold Coast Swim Fashion Festival in a spectacular display of the Gold Coast at its best, this November and December.
Come the first weekend of summer, a bevy of beauties will descend upon the Gold Coast in preparation for one of the most highly anticipated events to hit Surfers Paradise. The Gold Coast Swim Fashion Festival is an elaborate showcase of Australia’s leading resort and swimwear designers, paraded in spectacular shows on the white beaches of Surfers Paradise and poolside in the city’s most elegant resorts. The festival’s conception came about two years ago during what is now the festival’s highlight – the inaugural Gold Coast Bikini Parade. It was an idea spawned by the comments of a seasoned local, who was reflecting on the events the Gold Coast used to host years ago. Festival Director Leanne St. George wanted to revive the reputation of the Gold Coast as a fashion hub and create an event that represented everything the Gold Coast was renowned for. “The Gold Coast is a resort city and that is why millions have visited our city and beaches to enjoy our beach culture and magnificent climate, so by featuring resort and swimwear, and having fashion shows on the sand and poolside, what better way to portray our beautiful city?” Leanne says. A highlight of the festival this year will undoubtedly be international model and Gold Coast local, Samantha Harris, who is leading the parades, and at one point over the festival, stepping out in a million-dollar swimsuit. “Samantha epitomises the natural beauty and grace of our beautiful coastline. She is a born and bred Gold Coast girl, and loves this region. The million-dollar swimsuit is a creative collaboration between local
www.surfersparadise.com
award-winning jewellery designer, Ann Middleton, and Sunseeker swim label. It will be a great moment!” The Gold Coast Swim Fashion Festival is also offering the chance for another Gold Coaster to become the next Samantha Harris, with the Swim Model Search. Held in conjunction with one of Australia’s leading modelling agencies, Chic Management, the contest aims to unearth the next international superstar. Based in Sydney, Chic Management has launched the careers of some of Australia’s most successful models including Miranda Kerr, Gemma Ward, Abbey Lee Kershaw and Shanina Shaik, and Managing Director, Ursula Hufnagl, believes the next big thing in swim modelling could very well be homegrown. “The aspiring wannabes can join the ranks of some of the world’s top models like Samantha Harris, Catherine McNeil, Nicole Pollard, Alyssa Sutherland, Caitlin Sanderson, and Amanda Ware - these are all international success stories, discovered in Queensland,” said Ursula. Twenty successful entrants will strut their stuff in front of judges including Hufnagl (a former model herself) and Harris, as part of the Sunseeker Swim Model Spectacular to be held at the Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort and Spa on Thursday 28 November. The festival’s signature event, is the world famous Gold Coast Bikini Parade, which in 2011 originally set the world record for the most bikini wearing girls parading across the beach. China stole the title in 2012, but this year the Gold Coast is set to reclaim the record. Anyone is welcome to register for the parade and help break the world record. Tickets for the Gold Coast Swim Fashion Festival can be purchased via www.goldcoastswimfashionfestival.com.au and all those interested in taking part in the bikini parade Guinness World Record attempt can register via www.goldcoastbikiniparade.com.au

As we get ready to celebrate this milestone, let’s take a walk down memory lane and get reacquainted with our city’s rich history.

Since opening its doors in early September, Hurricane’s Grill in Surfers Paradise has been a runaway success. With a number of Sydney locations already in the Hurricane’s family, the Surfers Paradise restaurant is a test of sorts for further expansion up the Queensland coast. And if the results of its first few months in business are anything to go by, it probably won’t be too long until we see the opening of more Hurricane’s outlets in the sunshine state.
T
he popularity of the restaurant so far has been due largely to word of mouth. A quick search online yields numerous positive reviews with popular comments such as “best ribs ever” and “just amazing” a frequent find. Contributing to the gourmet chain’s success in Surfers Paradise is the winning formula that has been in the Sydney locations over the past 18 years: modern fit-out, great food and fabulous service. To ensure the consistency of quality from location to location, the new Surfers Paradise location even operates under the watchful eye of manager Matt Le Souder who has previously run both the North Ryde and Bondi restaurants. “The reception on the Gold Coast has been pretty incredible so far,” marvels Le Souder. “On our opening night, we served over 400 guests.” Every night since then has been fairly solid, Matt informs us, and you can expect to see queues spilling out the front door on a Friday and Saturday night. Don’t be deterred by this though, because with a seating capacity of 300 and a large, very well stocked bar, it’s only a drink or two before you are shown to your table. And plus, it’s a great opportunity to soak up the jaw dropping view of Surfers Paradise Beach. Floor to ceiling glass windows line the entire front of Hurricane’s Grill, making the most of the restaurant’s prime location. Inside, the fit-out has a cool industrial vibe with black steel pillars and lots of concrete and raw or exposed surfaces. Huge chandeliers made up of hundreds of bare hanging light bulbs fitted with LED lights are visible from outside, inviting curious passersby to come in. A sizeable wine cellar displays the hundreds of wine varieties in a stunning wall display; all are featured on the extensive wine list. With influences from North America, South Africa and Portugal, the Hurricane’s Grill menu reads like a carnivore’s dream. Ribs and steaks are the focus here, with a choice of beef, lamb or pork

ribs and close to a dozen cuts of steak, which are all marinated in Hurricane’s famous basting sauce and cooked over an open flame grill. A variety of mouth-watering sauces including oven roasted garlic cream sauce, sautéed mushroom sauce, a sweet and tangy South African ‘Monkey Gland’ sauce, creamy peppercorn sauce, Spanish tomato salsa and Portugese peri-peri are available to complement your steak. Both the ribs and the steaks are served with your choice of chips or baked potato. For something just a little bit lighter than steak or ribs, there’s a huge range of burgers including a decadent cheese and bacon burger, and a number of house specialties such as traditional South African Boerewors sausages, lamb cutlets and the Hurricane’s meat skewer – 200 grams of flame grilled chicken, beef or lamb, served on a bed of rice with a garden salad and spicy peri-peri sauce. If red meat is not your choice of protein, you can still enjoy a good meal at Hurricane’s, as they also serve up a range of chicken and seafood dishes. The seafood platter is ideal for sharing between two or three people and the Portugese chicken, basted in Hurricane’s secret sauce is our choice of the poultry dishes. Vegetarians are also amply catered for. As well as the option of a scrumptious veggie burger, packed with homemade vegetable pattie, giant sautéed mushroom, grilled capsicum, haloumi cheese, salad and spicy aioli, there’s also the delicious sounding veggie platter. With a selection of broccoli, snow peas and green beans lightly steamed and coated in olive oil, sea salt and cracked pepper, haloumi cheese, giant sautéed mushroom and fresh salad, this is the kind of vegetarian meal more restaurants should be offering! Families are welcome at Hurricane’s, with plenty of high chairs and a junior’s menu ensuring the kids are looked after. Hurricane’s Grill Surfers Paradise is open from 12.00pm until 3.00pm for lunch and from 5.00pm until late for dinner. The bar and lounge
area is open for drinks and snacks from 12.00pm until close. They’ll also be open New Year’s Day if you’re looking for somewhere to refuel! To experience Hurricane’s for yourself, we recommend making a reservation, although walk-ins are welcome. You can book online at www.surfers.hurricanesgrill.com.au or by calling 07 5503 5500. ancy a day spa treatment tailored exclusively to suit your needs? Welcome to spaQ, located within the Gold Coast’s QT Hotel. Their point of difference; they listen first, and then adapt your therapy session to exactly what you need. It could be a facial, massage, pedicure or body treatment - but it will be designed to cater to how you are feeling. We were invited to experience the spaQ menu, and fill you in on the yummy treatments available. Normally you choose your treatment well in advance when making a booking, however spaQ encourages you to simply book in your preferred time and ‘freshly pick’ from their indulgent menu on arrival, with the help of your therapist. If you are taken by something in particular, you can of course make a booking for a specific treatment in advance. Upon walking through the doors, you are welcomed with a friendly face and warm greeting. Seated on the lounge in the contemporary and cool reception area, we were introduced to our therapist; in this case the lovely Rebecca, who has recently won Best Therapist of the Year for 2013. A quick questionnaire and beautiful cup of tea, and you are ushered into the Relaxation Room, complete with soft reclining chairs and a view to

kill! A word on the questionnaire – whether you are feeling tired, stressed, jet lagged or even in need of ‘getting your groove back’ – write it down and let the therapists work their magic! For our first time, it is understandably hard to make a selection; spaQ’s therapeutic menu reads like a detailed guide to heaven on earth! With treatments such as the Organic Coco Cream Wrap, which is a moisture rich treatment to nourish the whole body, to the Therapeutic Sea Salt Glow, a green tea and sea salt infused combo designed to leave your skin smooth and glowing, it's difficult to pick. The beauty of spaQ is that the concept of tailoring your day spa treatment specifically for you ensures that you get the absolute most out of your session. Once changed into a robe and slippers, your therapy session is discussed over a soft foot and lower leg scrub – encouraging you to instantly relax. Next up, we indulge in our recommended massage and facial, and are left feeling completely calm and rejuvenated. In moments between the different facial applications, scalp and hand massages will leave you on the verge of sleep – heaven! A word that tends to get overused when it comes to day spas is ‘glowing’, but that is exactly how your skin will look and feel after a spaQ facial! The products that are used, Uspa, smell divine and feel even better. You will catch scents of lemon, rose and orange throughout your treatment, deepening your relaxation.
spaQ is a holistic experience for the mind and body. From the facials to the body treatments, and the expert therapists who really listen to you, you are looked after from start to finish. There are plenty of packages to consider, some created especially for the Gold Coast girl or guy. ‘Goldie Signatures’ are a series of carefully concocted treatments that are the ultimate blissful experience; warm oil back massages, lash tints, aloe wraps and foot baths, all in one!
