Locavore A Fresh Way of Thinking For a Changing Food System By Adrienne Roman
I
nitiatives promoting healthier eating and environmental protection are finally gaining momentum around the world. A number of industries are now endorsing a locavore lifestyle, a combination of the word “local” with the suffix “vore,” referring to either a planteating herbivore or meat-eating carnivore. The movement, which began in 2005 with a group of health-focused food enthusiasts in San Francisco, promotes eating as locally as possible with foods that are grown and prepared within 100 miles of home, while attempting to limit or completely eliminate non-local products. Sustainable farm-totable food systems are being established, raising conscious thought about the countless advantages of eating fresh over “tired" food, and bringing attention to the detrimental carbon cost that “food miles” have on our environment.

The locavore ideology follows “communitysupported agriculture,” or CSA, a farming model built on transparency. It works to build the bridges that connect us to fresh food choices, eliminating distributor costs for the consumer, and supplying direct wages to farmers. There’s no denying industrialized agriculture is experiencing a crisis, and global communities are migrating back to the most logical solution, discovering the bounties that can be found in local food and drink. This shift in consciousness has also highlighted a focus on the need to ensure ethical farm practices and the importance of knowing exactly how food reaches our table. Urban landscapes are being transformed back into lush vegetable gardens, and indoor greenhouses can be utilized for seasonal fruits and vegetables that can be grown in winter.
Fairmont Royal York Toronto
Fairmont Hotels and Resorts are dedicated to reducing their footprint and supporting the CSA model, with the addition of their “Bee Sustainable” program in 2008, adding a honeybee apiary to the 14th floor of the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, and establishing themselves as the very first hotel in the world to promote and protect them, all within a city centre. As the pollinators of 1000 of the 1200 varieties of crops that provide 80% of human food, bees play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of our ecosystem. An essential link in our food security, they enable the constant growth and reproduction of flowers, plants, and trees. Beekeeper Melanie Coates of the Toronto BeeKeepers Collective runs Royal York’s apiary of 500,000 bees, which reside in six onsite beehives and produce an average of 450 pounds of honey per year. Not only does the honey provide sweet magic for an array of mouth-watering recipes, the Royal York’s executive chef, jW Foster, and his colleagues also carefully tend to a rooftop garden filled with 45 varieties of herbs, fruits and vegetables. He’s dedicated to showcasing locally sourced menu items, managing energy and water conservation, and demonstrating a strong stewardship that’s globally echoed by progressive businesses wanting to forge ahead with positive change. Before the convenience of grocery stores and the overwhelming demands of

Live Locavore • Find out which restaurants in your area support local farmers, and dine there. • Search for a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program and invest in a farm: a farmer will provide a weekly box of assorted vegetables and farm products in return. • Visit local businesses and make connections with your community. • Seek out local vendors with fresh food options whenever possible. • Think about ways to eliminate waste and use glass instead of plastic. • Grow your own garden, and make preserves. • Shop at local farms and farmer’s markets. • Volunteer or work to help a local vendor sell.

consumerist culture, Indigenous communities adopted a “Three Sisters” method to farming their primary crops of corn, squash, and beans. The corn stalks provided the perfect place for the beans to grow, while the squash plants protected them from weed growth along the ground. The nitrogen-rich beans and the mulch from the squash leaves created a microclimate that retained just the right amount of moisture in the soil. The cross-pollination of the people, the land, and their multi-dimensional relationships with food sustained their communities throughout the entire year. Unfortunately, many of today’s food choices are often seriously lacking in nutrient-dense ingredients, and saturated with an abundance of toxic ones that dominate supermarket shelves. Convenience foods high in unhealthy fats, sugars, and salt are around every corner; but luckily, so are the healthier options.
There are common threads of knowledge in the culinary wisdom transmitted across cultures and vast geographic regions, and the secrets they hold about how to successfully meet our nutritional needs are completely accessible, as is the capability to grow our own food and enjoy seasonally fresh options. Creating a healthier and more efficient global food cycle is achievable – from growing, to preparing and processing, to consumption and recycling.
Adopting a “kincentric” worldview, where humans are closely related to other natural entities, is a powerful first step. People connect through food. It’s so much more than just what’s on your plate – it’s a way of life.

Systemic change is ignited through information, education, and action. Fresh “fast food” recipes can be created just as easily with better ingredients; it’s just a matter of reaching for the healthier choice. A bustling metropolis known for its skyscrapers, diverse restaurants, parks, and cultural landmarks, the city is an obvious choice for your next weekend getaway. ack in 1985, I eagerly lined up to see "Back to the Future" on its opening night. I must have made them watch it a hundred times, and it remains a movie that I must watch whenever I see it on the screen. In 2020, right before the pandemic hit, ECS Coffee bought a state-of-the-art small batch coffee roaster for our Burlington location. This zero emissions Bellwether roaster seemed from the future, with no external venting and no harmful pollution entering the atmosphere. It is even remotely connected to a team of master roasters and experts all over the world, helping us curate our blends to perfection. So as we searched for a new name for our coffee brand, it was just a coincidence that my daughter Brooke called me one day to suggest we get matching tattoos…(she is now 24) and when she pitched the idea I agreed immediately. So, the Roman numerals I.XXI are now permanently featured on both of us. Representing a nod to our favourite movie, One Point Twenty One references the electrical power in gigawatts to make time travel possible. Seeing as our new roaster was electrical, and since coffee does supply energy, the brand One Point Twenty One Coffee Roasters was created.

Kelly Sullivan lives in paradise, and he’s issued you an open invitation to join him. The Mississauga native has been in Turks and Caicos since the early ’90s, and he’s seen the two groups of tropical islands slowly but surely become one of the world’s premier vacation destinations, with the world’s best beach. “We have an amazing beach club on Grace Bay Beach, which is now ranked on TripAdvisor as the number-one beach on planet earth. Not the Caribbean. Planet Earth!” beams Sullivan, silver locks flowing, the very ideal of an ex-pat living his dream.

Sullivan expounds on the intricacies of the island paradise. “Turks and Caicos is [anything] but lush because on an annualized basis we have only 43 days of rain in the entire year!” Very little food is indigenous to the island, so everything is flown in fresh: fruits and vegetables from Florida, beef flown by FedEx from St. Lawrence Market in Toronto, and the genesis of Alive & Well’s own botanical garden, with imported figs, bananas, plantain, pomegranates, and more. “We have actual horticulturists on the payroll – they earned their bachelor’s degree in science and agriculture. We grow and propagate and it gives us an opportunity to offer that farm-to-fork spirit and experience.

The restaurant has become so popular that guests of the ultra-high-end celebritycatering resorts in the area frequently drop into Kokomo Botanical Resort’s WE Grill + Wok | Winebar. “You know, they don’t want to be a prisoner in their villa, or wherever they’re staying,” says Sullivan. “They want to get out, and they choose to do so by booking private reservations at Kokomo. So, it’s not like paparazzi will be there. It’s a private dining experience in a public place, so to speak.”
“We have fresh fish coming in: branzino, mahi-mahi, and swordfish. It’s always fresh, never frozen. Fresh land proteins, fresh sea proteins, and even our produce, which doesn’t come from the grounds – we bring it in from a supplier in South Florida [who services the überluxury resorts and denizens there, he explains]. Gastronomically, we’re doing something different than everybody else. You’re going to eat well. And our mixologist comes from Barbados, so we create all these signature hand cocktails, we smoke tequila – it’s like the kitchen in the bar. It’s open concept. It’s an experiential environment, where West meets East in the kitchen and in the bar. We’re like an Asian steakhouse with authentic Chinese cuisine, Tomahawk steaks, or filets, bone-in ribeye. We actually are doing a veal Tomahawk tonight, a smaller cut, but it’s that light pink colour – all on the island’s only Argentine grill.”
But Turks and Caicos isn’t about a beach, world-class dining, or spa treatments (even the Balinese masseuse is imported, and offers authentic pampering care), though they certainly enhance its appeal. It’s about the adoption of a lifestyle. The pandemic has seen a revolution of remote working, and a better balance of life and work. “You know, lawyers, accountants, architects, engineers, a lot of them [have to commute] every day each way. [If] you’re spending an hour each way, that’s two hours a day, 10 hours a week, 500 hours in a year. Do that for 40 years. That’s 20,000 hours, and you don’t get paid to do that. You’re paying for that. So, I’ve gained [that time] over the last 25-30-plus years that I’ve been here.”

I didn’t check Sullivan’s math, but the expat knows his numbers. And he doesn’t stop there. “I don’t know what land transfer tax is in Ontario anymore, but we don’t have real estate taxes here. We don’t have property taxes. You just have a land transfer tax called stamp duty – and it’s about 8% of the purchase price. But that’s it: you pay that one time, and you never pay an ounce of tax again. “It’s not just the [first] generation that buys it, because Kokomo is a multigenerational family property,” he continues. “And with our guests that stay here, we say why book a room when you could book a cottage? Each cottage has two bedrooms, so [you can] book more cottages based on what your needs are.” Or you might choose to buy an attractive cottage for yourself and your family – the price tag weighs in, with all closing costs, at just $525,000 Canadian right now. “That includes stamp duty, furniture package, your legal fees, and a rental guarantee – which in this marketplace, in all my years of being here, I’ve never seen anybody [need to use].” Sullivan’s argument should appeal to any GTAer with a Muskoka connection: drive 2.5 hours north for the summer, fly 3.5 hours south for the winter and enjoy a tropical getaway in unspoiled and luxurious surroundings. And when you’re not using your Turks and Caicos cottage, you can enjoy a return on your investment via the property rental pool, with all details (cleaning/booking/guest services) taken care of for you. Owner Elizabeth, along with Michelle Mazzilli as senior designer, approached this new project with great anticipation. The property

When making design choices, we consider the client's colour and style preferences and welcome their feedback along the way."

Elizabeth Interiors will look at each room in the home as an opportunity to add personality and elevate the space for maximum comfort and enjoyment. The natural light exposure and position of the home is also significant to how the design comes to life. In this particular home, the design team focused in part on two of the four bedrooms, each with a unique theme. The principal bedroom was an absolute delight to transform into a place of total relaxation. The main feature is the magnificent floral mural wallpaper treatment on the headboard wall, which draws the eye and delights the senses. The focal fireplace was surrounded by unique chairs, meant for curling up with a good book or simply gazing into the view of the backyard to enjoy the natural landscape. One of the guest bedrooms was decorated in soft and restful tones of blue and grey. Luxurious bedding dresses an upholstered poster bed, a treat for any guest who may stay. A hideaway desk within the closet adds charm and a comfortable spot to enjoy and make yourself at home. Every space was designed to make guests feel welcome, for a family who likes to entertain.

A long hallway, often an area left untouched, received love and attention to invite guests to come in, stop and take a pause. The living room has stunning built-ins that became part of the design. The fireplace was painted for definition, the grand piano was added for class, and a black and white palette creates dramatic contrast. Each room reflects its own personality, and the dining room is no exception. The concept is gentle and pleasing to the eye. A shimmery iridescent wallpaper with bejewelled illusions meets you as you enter. This is a warm room that looks more expansive with the lustrous décor. The design team left no detail unturned, even adding place settings on the table. The family room features a metal étagere to give it a unique feeling. The décor incorporates glass and metal to open the space up with a modern
and warm touch. Elizabeth Interiors includes pieces on trend to modernize the home while maintaining function and style. A double coffee table was selected to update the space, and swivel chairs to allow guests to be part of the conversation or swivel to marvel at the back gardens. Each room was carefully designed to deliver comfort and charisma. The inspiration was described as casually elegant, playing off the home's exceptional tile flooring and feature frameworks like the built-in shelving, grand fireplaces, and incredible views. Elizabeth comments, "This was a lovely home to begin with, so this project was special for us. Our team took the natural beauty of each space and elevated the design without being too formal. Japandi: The Future of Muskoka’s Architecture Andrew Sun knows the future. The Toronto-based designer isn’t a prophet and he doesn’t have extrasensory perception, but that doesn’t make his foresight for Muskoka design and architecture any less prescient. The future, as Sun sees it, is Japandi. Unfamiliar with Japandi? Not for long. The concept is “a combination of Scandinavian functionality and Japanese Zen and minimalism, a style that is both easygoing and sophisticated,” he says. And it’s primed to become the design ideology your neighbours claimed to be into years ago. Sun explains, “Japandi features clean lines, natural textures and craftmanship. It creates a cozy and peaceful

atmosphere, and harmonizes with surrounding nature. Being in Muskoka and surrounded by the beautiful trees and lakes, our goal is to create an architecture and interior space with simplicity and coziness that enhance the remarkable views, balance the light and shadow, and make the cottage a true extension of the beautiful landscape and a peaceful getaway from the hustle and bustle of urban life.” Sun’s design-architect firm, Atelier SUN, offers full intricate customization to your heart’s content, with no limitations on design, and provides recommendations for qualified builders. Design-architects are not to be confused with designbuilders, who offer a one-stop shop but lack in customization as they are limited
the larger cultural discourse. It has affected our personal lives and personal spaces. Muskoka is a specific part of Canada – the very definition of cottage country, the ideal of cottage country. So in terms of the aesthetic and the design, how does a designer incorporate contemporary design and Japandi style with generational tradition?

s I sit and watch the sun setting on another beautiful day in Muskoka, barbecues scenting the air, families and friends reveling in the end of the day, I can’t help but think about not only what brought me here, but also about what brought and can bring more families to this region, this life. I was introduced to mortgage lending shortly after my time at Acadia University where I studied and competed in athletics. I was craving some form of competition within the business environment and from what I gathered from friends and family, I was looking for a commission-based or sales-driven industry. I had a passion for real estate as a child – growing up, I read everything I could on creating a combination of security and wealth and dreamt of an entry into the industry. With a finance background and a father who I idolized and who created an amazing life for his family, climbing the ranks from door-to-door sales to an executive at a big bank, I wanted to combine these passions, traditions, and real estate into a competitive work environment. My mother had met some bank mortgage specialists and told me about them. They had been a fairly young, fun, and competitive group, driven by real estate and helping others finance it. I had a contact in the industry that gave me a chance to work under his leadership and with him started my journey doing mortgages in Toronto. Never did I believe that those affections and a few lucky bounces would lead me to where I am now. But I couldn’t possibly be happier with my journey, and the opportunity to help other families realize their dreams.

I started off financing pre-sale condo development funding thousands of units across Toronto. Over time, with some strategic and at times serendipitous relationships, I got into more creative credit structuring for high-net-worth clients and sports professionals, carving out a niche that still exists today: financing luxury real estate. I soon realized there is great value in understanding the area and uniqueness of these properties and became very knowledgeable on how to finance them.
larger mortgages, largely over $1M, using intuitional capital, creative programs like High Net Worth Lending and Business for Self, a lot of construction financing and renovation financing (especially in Muskoka) along with access to the alternative and private markets for shortterm credit solutions. Lending changes on a regular basis and a major competitive advantage in the broker space (compared to working at a singular bank like I used to do) is access to many lenders and different capital sources. My team, The Westlake Team (TWT), part of Dominion Lending Centres National, is a group of 50-plus mortgage agents that service Canadians with more “regular mortgage solutions.” These are the more typical day-to-day mortgages for first-time buyers, renewals, refinances, and helping new Canadians with their mortgage needs, among other endeavours. The separation between the work I focus on and my team is just a specialization that takes time to build over the years, but one that provides clients with a singular and specific understanding of a complicated market. Our main office is located in Oakville, with two others in Toronto and Muskoka. To keep me sharp, I also coach a handful of high-producing mortgage brokers on a quarterly basis.
My entry into the Muskoka market started when I purchased a place in Port Carling; a smaller cottage, on a great lot, terrific location minutes outside town, and all the amenities. I spent a significant amount of time relaxing away from the hustle and bustle of the city while having the opportunity to meet many local small businesses, realtors, builders, lawyers, and the like – all of whom play crucial roles in bringing dreams and dreamers to the region. I soon realized there is great value in understanding the area and uniqueness of these properties and became very knowledgeable on how to finance them. There is added value with a significant amount of purchasers and owners living between Toronto and Muskoka and I can support their financing needs from either location, which our clients and referral sources love. During the pandemic, business changed for everyone, including our mortgage team. We were fortunate that we had a strong digital footprint from the perspective of being able to communicate with our clients and referral sources, and have a very robust secure online application system that takes our clients from application through funding, all electronically. Armed with a lot of great referral sources and a brokerage that was likely first to market on how we would conduct business, we saw what become, arguably, the best 24 months in the real estate and mortgage business. Moving into this next genre of challenges, faced with inflation, higher rates, and harder qualifications, we realize the importance of being more available to a broader audience and helping more Canadians with their mortgage needs, and are working closely with groups like Cayman Marshall to expand our digital marketing footprint and hopefully clients and referral sources in years to come.

ne project that caught my attention recently is a beautifully crafted custom cottage on Topajo Road on Lake Joseph in Muskoka. The cottage is a contemporary masterpiece designed by Sophie Clapperton Designs. Clapperton has become known for her “unique, yet timeless, designs” throughout the GTA and Muskoka, gracing homes and cottages on Lake Joseph, Lake Muskoka, Lake Rosseau, York, Etobicoke, and elsewhere. Clapperton is at the vanguard of a new generation of designers who seek the perfect intersection between their craft and social and ecological responsibility. I recently sat down with Sophie to discuss inspiration, design, and the Topajo Road project, a newly come-to-market property on the exclusive Muskoka jewel, Lake Joseph. Naturally, I wanted to know from where she drew her inspiration for this project. “I have a lot of connection to New York,” says Clapperton. “We spend a lot of time in New York each year, so styles and inspiration I pull come from the New York aesthetic. Even [with the Topajo Road project], it’s a cottage but the colour schemes – for instance, the primary bathroom – are very Art Deco, black and white; and in the materiality, the way that we mixed metals from the New York scene. Inspiration also comes from a couple of other places: other designers and works that I see online, Instagram, and real estate on the lake.” The Topajo Road, Lake Joseph, property is a marvel, nearly 6000 square feet with 450 feet of frontage on one of the region’s most majestic lakes. Nestled into the landscape, the fivebedroom plus two-storey boathouse is every cottager’s dream.

“I like the juxtaposition of this one,” Clapperton says of the house. “We’ve got a dark exterior, which is trendy and really in. It’s very dramatic when you’re up close, but from a distance, on the lake, you almost don’t know the cottage is there. Most can’t see it unless you’re right up close to it, which is really,

comes natural challenges. When I ask Sophie what she thinks is important when deciding what to spend on, she says, “Spend more money on windows and insulation – you’re going to save money in the long run. Those are things that you’re not going to change in 10 years.”
The challenge of designing for Muskoka is to balance the intention of the structure with the traditions of the region. As Clapperton notes, “The other part of this project that I really love – and it was one of the main concerns and focuses when designing it – was that we wanted it to be modern and contemporary, but still pull traditional aspects of Muskoka. We achieved this by doing simple things like exposed rafter tails outside. On the inside, even though we don’t have a lot of wood, we went with a variety of shiplap textures and replicated beams. You still feel like it’s a cottage without it being a wood cabin.” “The exterior has some modern aspects – for example, the roof overhangs have been cut short,” she adds, “[with] a sleeker profile siding and larger windows. We incorporated shed curved dormers with exposed rafter tails. Having those little elements brought it back to the classical scope, which will allow it to have more longevity – much more timeless. I didn’t want it just to look good for five years.” And that’s the true challenge:

She continues, “The element of the interior that people need to put more money towards is flooring. That’s something that you’re walking on every single day. If you have kids, they’re going to be playing on it. If you’ve got pets, you want to make sure that your hardwood is going to be durable. Make sure you’re picking something with a decent thickness to it, even an engineered product that you can resand and finish at least once or twice.” In the Topajo Road property, every square inch was taken into consideration. How do you achieve something that is crafted in such a detailed way but does not appear busy? As Sophie explains, “We balanced the use of texture by being consistent with the colour.” Most walls and ceilings are cladded with MDF details. Being intentional with the colour choice softens all these details for the eye.
“Going with a white or light colour on the MDF will soften the lines. If you were to go with a mid-tone colour, that can cast heavier shadows, which can be jarring to the eye. When you get to dark colours, the lines soften, however, almost too much – to the point where you can’t see them, eliminating all the work that you did.” It is important to find balance between these things. We can see examples of this done successfully throughout the interior of this cottage, from the intricate ceiling detail in the foyer inspired by a boat, to the unique patterns on the walls that were designed for each room. To highlight and enhance the craftsmanship of the building itself, light and décor had to be taken into consideration. Clapperton and I agree that these two things make the biggest impact on making the building feel more like a home, instead of a construction site. “Artificial and ambient lighting makes a big difference,” she explains.
“You want to ensure you layer the light, and have a mixture of overhead, decorative, and accent lighting. For example, by adding wall sconces in a room, you have an opportunity to add light to highlight a feature such as a piece of art; however, it also adds a soft layer of light that isn’t overhead.” Art, décor, curtains, and furniture add the final pieces to the puzzle that will make your home or cottage feel lived-in and cozy. “Adding furniture transformed this space and made it feel completely different,” Clapperton observes. “The finishing items like curtains and décor pieces filled up the space and got rid of the bare feeling. It also helped to eliminate echoes throughout the space.” The passion that Sophie has put into this project is left to speak for itself. Once you step through the door, the space is inviting, cozy, and warm. The connection to the outdoors and the lake is magnetic, with breathtaking water views from every room.

hen we think of community centres, we’re drawn to images of indoor pools, basketball courts, parkettes, and town hall meetings. When I was growing up in Ottawa, the Cole Park Community Centre was where I learned to swim, attended nursery school, and made friends I’m still in touch with today. It’s where my parents made connections that would nurture and foster their young family. But as we see urban – and suburban – spaces shift culturally and socioeconomically, we’ve also seen our public spaces reimagine what a community centre is or can be. The Art Gallery of Burlington is, and has been, at the forefront of that cultural shift. The AGB has been a community centre for over forty years, and their welcoming open doors could serve as a template for other institutions to foster community through their agendas. The gallery was established in 1978, as a number of local artists' guilds came together to share space, resources, and interest in one another. The founding guilds – photography, hand weaving, spinning, sculpture, woodcarving, ceramics, fine arts, and hooking craft – provided a foundation upon which generations of artists and enthusiasts have enriched their work and excitement within the disciplines. The AGB grew quickly into a public art gallery with exhibitions, publications, and its own permanent collection. These were supported by educational and public programming and necessitated two large expansions. Its community-centred mandate was not built by accident. There is a strategic and concentrated effort to nurture and expand the breadth of its role, established forty-five years ago.

t started with a group of women who were all artists in various mediums, who wanted to have a space where they could come together and work,” says Nadine Heath, the AGB’s Director of Marketing and Communications. “And so the first part of the gallery was then formed, which was essentially a series of studios or workshops, which are still here today. Within this space, there is a beautiful, high-functioning, modern pottery studio with a number of kilns and equipment, and a children's pottery studio as well. There is a woodworking and sculpting studio with all of the equipment you need and a lot of space to work. There is a weavers studio, full of rooms – it's a beautiful space, large and open – and people come in there and do their fibre work. We also have a state-of-theart photography studio, divided between an actual studio space where photographers can come in and set up their workshop and models, or do still photography, with backdrops and lighting. It's a fantastic space. And there is a darkroom that you can go in and develop your own work.” The gallery also features a meeting room and a library, providing the different guilds with their own spaces; a rug hooking guild; a new media guild aimed at younger artists, and aspiring artists; and a fine art school open studio space. Workshops, formal and informal, are offered in order to facilitate conversation and growth within their communities. “At one point, this space had language that was much more referential to being a community centre,” notes Heath. “Then galleries were added so the guilds could

And now we have larger galleries to show rotating, curated exhibitions as well.” The guilds are still very much part of the foundation of the gallery. Anyone can join and become a member to learn from others and use the resources of the spaces. Additionally, the curated exhibits, featuring contemporary artists from all around Canada, also have access to and use those spaces. There’s a wonderful, organic, fostering mission at play at the AGB, one that doesn’t simply promote art but builds artists and community. There’s also the AGB’s permanent collection, which boasts the largest collection of ceramics in Canada, grown out of the pottery guild. Collections are augmented by an acquisitions committee, which considers the discipline and acquires items for the collection. When we think about galleries and cultural contributions, our minds tend to wander towards the cosmopolitan nature of the metropolis. Certainly, nowhere is this more evident than in the GTA, where Toronto proper is alive and rich in theatres, galleries, museums, and other cultural entities. But the rapid expansion of what was once pejoratively referred to

as the suburbs, and the cultural and socioeconomic development of those regions, has built incredibly diverse and rich communities of artists and cultural contributors beyond urban centres. The AGB has been a vital example of this shift and prides itself on its role in continuing to grow and support that transformation. No community can be built without investment in its future. The AGB’s youth outreach has fostered generations of artists and interests. “We have a large children's art studio,” notes Heath. “It's a big, bright, beautiful space. And we use that for a lot of classes and camps and school visits.” But there is a method and care to the curation that is hyperaware of not just the local community, but global as well. “Our curator definitely has intention from what she brings into the space. She does a lot of work to highlight different interesting voices and social and cultural issues.”

current exhibit explores the intersection of colonialism and tourism. Here Comes the Sun “traces the origins of extractive tourism industries through the works of contemporary artists whose practices examine the interconnections between colonial legacies of crop plantations and service economies in the Caribbean.” The exhibit features the work of four artists: Irene de Andrés, Katherine Kennedy, Joiri Minaya, and Ada M. Patterson. Spain’s de Andrés’ work concerns itself with the engagement between tourists and home, Ibiza, an island known for its nightclubs and festivity, while this exhibit examines Puerto Rico. Barbadian Kennedy – an artist, writer, and cultural practitioner whose work has visited Aruba, Jamaica, Nigeria, New Zealand, South Korea, and Trinidad & Tobago – explores a “visual practice... tied to a sense of place, using interplay between organic and inorganic materials and imagery to interrogate the spectrum of belonging and displacement in different environments or cultural contexts.” Minaya is an

Other exhibits the AGB is excited to be featuring this summer include work from the Z’otz* Collective, whose “vivid storytelling explores themes of memory and Mesoamerican mythology through humour and collective action” through a mural installation that engages with the AGB’s “architectural space and the cast of characters who wander [its] halls.” The collective is a local group, a Toronto-based trio (Nahúm Flores, Erik Jerezano, Ilyana Martínez) with Latin American roots. Mother Tongue, from Vietnamese illustrator and muralist Yen Linh Thai “explores the widening gap of lost cultural knowledge between generations.” Thai is a renowned visual storyteller, and their work confronts the inherent nature of generational dissipation of culture.

Patterson, another Barbadian artist, describes their work as “picking up the fragments of what washes up in these places and trying to make sense of it together, and, as a queer person, as a trans person who grew up in Barbados, you do get pushed to places that feel almost on the edges and you have to try and make a different kind of life for yourself.”
