So far we’re experiencing a solid start to the year with sales already off to the races in Muskoka (even though we still currently have ice on the lake as I write this in April). As usual,
the market is experiencing a shortage of good waterfront land and as always we have a long list of buyers waiting with bated breath for the perfect place so we’re hoping inventory catches up. Please read our editorial on page 32 about the sustainability of Muskoka property values. If you’re trying to figure out when the best time is to purchase real estate in cottage country (spoiler alert... it was yesterday) the good news is now is the next best time! This year I’m expecting volume sales slightly down due to a lack of inventory and values to remain the same for the next 6-12 months. I trust you will enjoy this spring issue!

rtist Ernestine Tahedl likes classical music so much, she’s named dozens of recent paintings after works by famous composers. “My love is intuitive; I don’t read music,” she says, looking smart in a tailored cheongsam jacket during an interview at her mid-century Modernist house in King City. Like composers, the prolific artist uses opus numbers to keep track of her works. “I started in 1980; I’m up to 3,580. My husband says I should stop,” she says with a laugh. Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde inspired six abstract paintings in 2014. “They’re very dark,” she says. They should be, given that the opera, especially the third-act prelude, offers Western music’s bleakest portrayal of despair. One of Bach’s favourite forms was the passacaglia, or variations above a repeating short, simple pattern of bass notes. Passacaglia (2010) abstractly evokes a mountainous landscape, with

“mountain” as the bass pattern and variations as tall snowy peaks in the far distance, a shadowy massif in the middle distance, and closer still, set off with a veil of white clouds, a formidable rock face with brilliantly saturated, agitated brush strokes of twilight reds and purples. In its non-realistic way, Passacaglia evokes the grandiloquent depictions of nature associated with the early 19th-century American art movement known as the Hudson River School, exemplified by Albert Bierstadt’s Lower Yosemite Valley, where the play of clouds and sunlight against rugged topography assumes a transcendent, spiritual aspect.

While many, an abstract painting looks like a jumble of lines or blobs evoking a Rorschach test, “There’s romanticism in my work, even in the abstract canvases. They’re not abstract in the sense of what people consider abstract paintings.”
and Iceland. “Those trips were a major influence on my paintings for years. I love that landscape. I’ve spent quite a bit of time there. It’s very stark without trees. The light is clearer; the clarity of colours is crisper.”
The suggestion of mountain ranges in her recent abstract works harks back to her previous, landscape-painting phase, when she sought out remote frigid settings, travelling to the Antarctic, Greenland
Her travels have also taken her to the tropical climates of Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, the volcanic archipelago 1,000 km west of South America famed for its exotic, unique
wildlife. “They’re gorgeous, but only cold landscapes interest me as a painter. There has to be ice and snow.” Spoken like a true Canadian. For about a quarter-century, she favoured wide, panoramic landscapes in her work, such as Autumn Splendour, Fall (1979), and the pretty Rainclouds, Canada Series (1999). They’re rendered with gentle, pastel softness in a stylized realism, on the way to abstraction but with its feet still

planted in the world of natural forms. The lyrical, lovely style of these works contrast with her subsequent harsher, more aggressive, less “user-friendly” abstract oeuvre to such an extent that they seem like the work of different artists – or perhaps a single, stylistically schizophrenic one. “People loved buying certain paintings and I could continue with that, but the commercial aspect doesn’t worry me; I was never driven by sales. Painting for 70 years,

I’ve had to find new ways of keeping up my interest. I’m in a different frame of mind now. The abstract work that I started about eight years ago has rejuvenated me.” If you want to find the missing link between her quasi-realistic landscapes and her current abstract work, shuffle off to Buffalo to admire one of its architectural glories, Louis Sullivan’s Guaranty Building, an early skyscraper designed in 1896 and notable for its terra cotta cladding of wriggling, writhing, whiplash tendril forms. This was
a universally popular motif during the turn-of-the-20th century Art Nouveau era, and had preoccupied French Impressionist painter Claude Monet in his paintings of water lilies in the garden of his villa at Giverny. “We went to France and I saw Monet’s pond at Giverny. His paintings didn’t interest me much, but the pond absolutely fascinated me. I came home and painted ponds for a long time. They were the transition to my abstract works.”

lattering among the stacked paintings in her studio, she moves her Partita (2008) into the light and traces the whiplash tendril forms in her depiction of waterlogged nymphéa. Then she moves to an in-progress abstract canvas perched on her easel, showing how its exuberant squiggles were first cousins to the previous painting’s tortuously tangled lily-pad outriggers. “Surprise! They don’t look very different.” Despite the periodic shifts in the style of her output, certain characteristic traits persist over time. The values of her palette – the darkness or lightness of her colours – vary. But her combinations of red, yellow and purple hues have remained recognizable throughout her career.

Indeed, those combinations were there before it even started – as Scheherazade, a small framed doll painted in gouache (like watercolour, but more opaque) when she was twelve, hanging on the living-room wall, attests. Growing up in Austria, she liked to hang around in the studio of her father, a wellknown artist during the 1950s. He was given free samples of pigments in the thennew acrylic medium by a paint company that was bringing them to market. “I really grew right into it,” she recalls. “Acrylic has always been my medium. It gives me exactly what I’m looking for: the strength, beauty and transparency of colour. I’ve never worked in oils,” since she dislikes the smell of turpentine. She dilutes her acrylics to the thinness of watercolour. To keep the runny paint from smearing, “I work on the floor 90 per cent of the time.” To add transparency, she builds up layers of glaze, “like putting on sheets of glass so that the colours underneath come through but are controlled. The glazing process gives vibrancy to the tonality.” After graduating with a master’s degree in printmaking from the Vienna Academy

of Applied Arts, she regularly assisted her father with his stained-glass commissions. These included a 1,400-square-foot installation in Wilden-Duernbach, the largest stained-glass commission in Lower Austria, and another for St. Rupert’s, the oldest church in Vienna. It was as a stained-glass artist that she immigrated to Edmonton in 1963, where she married her physicianhusband, a recently retired University of Toronto professor. “I couldn’t speak English, not a single word,” she recalls. Still, she was at the right place at the right time. “I was so lucky. I was there when they had this unbelievable oil boom in that city.”

oon, her phone started ringing. One of her early commissions was a set of terrazzo panels for the city’s main post office. When the building was later demolished, the panels were saved from the wrecker’s ball, and now sit prominently outside the new Royal Alberta Museum on 104th Avenue. Other installations were not so lucky. Her layered, three-dimensional glass panels for Saskatoon’s Mendel Gallery didn’t survive a building renovation, and her expansive windows for the Canada Pavilion Sanctuary at Montreal’s Expo ’67 disappeared along with the rest of the temporary structure. Toronto boasts her last major stained-glass
project (1989): windows wrapping the front and side walls of St. Peter’s Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church, near the northeast corner of Eglinton and Mount Pleasant Avenues, viewable weekdays 10 a.m. to 3 pm. The sparkle of stained glass and the subtle way it tracks the movement of sun and clouds continue to influence her work as a painter. As Katerina Atanassova, senior curator of Canadian Art at Ottawa’s National Gallery of Canada, writes in one of 20 coffee table books on Tahedl’s art available from custom publisher www.blurb.com, “The complex play with light passing through glass…transforms light onto her luminous canvases.”
She’s won Canada Council and GovernorGeneral awards, among others. Her work reposes in corporate collections on three continents; fans include a Viennese collector who owns 50 of her works. Don’t miss her future exhibition planned for next year at a public gallery in Zagreb, Croatia, or her permanent installation at St. Florian Monastery, a landmark of the Austrian Baroque near Linz. In early March, the Bank of Canada, citing a slowdown in consumer spending, weaker exports and other factors, decided to hold interest rates steady. Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz hinted that the economy looks headed for a prolonged period of sluggishness, if not an actual retreat, that could last a year or longer. Meanwhile, housing prices in the GTA have slowed their dizzying ascent, at least for the time being. Does all this mean you should be nervous about investing in Muskoka real estate? Could we be heading for a collapse in prices? Actually, according to Cayman Marshall sales representative Steve Haddock, history has shown that buying real estate in a solid market like Muskoka is one of the best investments you can make over the long term – regardless of short-term market fluctuations. 32 SPRING 2019 ■
In fact, the demand for cottage properties in the region, especially desirable waterfront properties, will almost certainly continue to increase. That’s because, Haddock explains, many of the factors that drive this market are virtually unaffected by mainstream economic concerns, particularly in the higher end. “In many ways, Muskoka is an extension of the GTA market, and many buyers are from the GTA (or may have come from elsewhere but grew up there),” he says. “Aside from the fact that cottage ownership is a goal of so many people, if you look at the market in Toronto, there are some key indicators. “As Toronto grows up – figuratively and literally, with the explosion of new condos going up – there’s a huge increase in density there, which means the demand for cottage properties will

also increase. At the same time, density is changing the other way in Muskoka; new bylaws mandate that lots should be considerably wider than they were a generation ago, to protect the integrity of the lakes. And of course, there are only so many lakes. So this pushes demand, and prices, up.” Haddock says that the biggest challenge driving both the Toronto and Muskoka markets continues to be a shortage of listings. “In both cases, some people may not put their properties on the market simply because there’s nowhere for them to move to!” And for others, they’ve owned their cottage for many years and there’s no mortgage on it, so they don’t need to sell. “The market has been very constrained by this lack of listings, so when they do decide to sell, there’s a strong demand.” SPRING 2019 33 ■
One of the biggest factors driving demand has little to do with the investment value of a cottage; it’s primarily emotion-driven. Haddock cites a recent study that showed as many as 75% of Millennials surveyed aspired to buy a cottage more than a condo. As members of this generation begin to start families and develop enough net worth to purchase property, “Many of them might decide to rent in the city and buy a cottage instead.” In some cases, young families see it as not only a way to give their own children the same cottage experience

they may have had growing up, but a better value for investment than the astronomical prices of even a modest city house. (Furthermore, Haddock points out that a lot of money will be inherited over the next five to ten years – as much as $250 billion – and much of that money will be invested in Muskoka real estate.) Another important factor to consider is Boomers themselves, one of the largest demographic groups in history. As they reach retirement age in increasing numbers, many of them are choosing to sell their Toronto properties, move to Muskoka to live full-time, and rent or buy a winter home down south. “I have one couple with a $3.5M house in mid-town Toronto, who are considering selling their city house and moving up here; they say they’ll just rent or stay with friends whenever they have to go back to the city.” The influx of capital earned from the sale of high-end Toronto properties is set to have a significant effect on both demand and prices as this trend grows.
While much of the traditional demand for Muskoka property comes from the GTA, Haddock goes on to explain, it’s hardly exclusive to it. “Our currency has an appeal to U.S. and other foreign buyers, especially if they have roots in Canada,” he says. “To an American, paying $700,000 for a cottage is a lot more attractive than $1 million.” And Muskoka’s relative proximity to the city, its unspoiled beauty and relaxed lifestyle are highly attractive to buyers from all over the world. Above all, Haddock says, buying real estate in an established, highdemand region such as Muskoka still produces one of the highest returns on investment you can make, especially over the long term. “There will always be optimum times to buy as the market goes up and down,” he notes. “But if you look over the last ten years, the direction is always up. And given that the demand continues to increase, so will your value over time. “Personally,” he adds, “I don’t know anyone who has ever lost money on Muskoka waterfront property over the long haul.”

The magic is in its manufacture. “Our lacquers are labourintensive,” says Shaw, pointing to its precision book-matched lacquered veneer cabinets. She likens the hands-on process to the care that’s put into the creation of a G-Class Mercedes. Both products may be made in a factory, but they’re not being churned out willy-nilly.

We were so impressed by the quality and the workmanship that goes into these kitchens.”
Which is why if you go for one of Eggersmann’s exquisite kitchens, you can expect the highest level of individual service. “I talk to many trades who never see the designer after a kitchen is installed,” says Binns, who grew up in the renovation industry and regularly lectures on the topic. “We sometimes spend months with clients designing the kitchen.” Unlike decades ago, when the aproned lady of the house prepped a roast in a tuckedaway room, today’s lifestyles have evolved, and so has the kitchen. Often open to the rest of the house, the kitchen serves as a gathering place, a hub to do homework or a spot to entertain friends over cocktails and canapés. As such, its functionality is essential. And since it’s out in the open, it better look ravishing too.

ow a person uses the kitchen is germane to its design. “We have one client who was frustrated with her architect,” recalls Binns. She didn’t like the flow of the rooms. “The excitement of building a new home gets lost when you get into the nuts and bolts of where everything goes,” he says. “Will there be a wine room? What about storage? Are we putting a walk-in pantry available for entertaining?” And never assume. It seems like a no-brainer that the client’s coffeemaker should be in the kitchen. Not so, says Binns. “It depends on how you use your home – this one ended up on the upper floor. Luxury homes often have beautiful wings. The clients get up in the morning and they don’t necessarily want to go to their kitchen, so we equipped their ensuite with refrigeration for cream.” But surely storage is on everyone’s wish list? Yes and no, says Binns, who has a philosophical take on the subject. “Your kitchen is not a storage facility. It’s a place to cook. Don’t fill every wall with storage. People love islands because there aren’t cabinets over their heads.” That said, a Binns/Shaw-designed kitchen is kitted out in smart storage solutions – they’re just not show-offy about it. In these slick kitchens, you’ll find extremely organized deep drawers that hold everything from colossal saucepans to salad bowls. 38 SPRING 2019 ■

he duo is also fond of tall cabinets, which are particularly useful in a pantry. Not just for food staples, Binns’ custom creations can also accommodate dishes and small appliances. “People get up and need the toaster or the blender. If you put them in a drawer you might not use them.” He favours a four-foot-long door that laterally opens with a push to reveal toast-making essentials. According to Binns and Shaw, breakfast nooks and warming ovens are all the rage. They like nooks, because the whole kit-and-caboodle that comes with morning meals can be tucked away after use.
“You don’t need upper cupboards everywhere for storage. They can look top-heavy,” says Binns. “Don’t put them in just because you have base cabinets. Besides, the sexiest part of the kitchen is the cooking area.” He adds, “Put in a beautiful vent hood. Put in something that excites the room.” That said, not every vent should be on show. They recently installed a new kitchen in a Pickering house set on a ravine, which had been designed by an architect about 30 years ago. Oddly enough, a wall boxed in the old kitchen, masking the view of a sublime forest in the backyard. “I never understood why they did that,” says Shaw. “The view is beautiful, with wall-to-wall windows.”
Shaw customized an over-the-range hood so that it tucked neatly into the ceiling when not in use. The new kitchen now matches its majestic setting: a series of ethereal arctic-white blocks make up the island; behind it, cabinetry flanked by a fridge and ovens complements the island’s geometric design. Sculptural and seamless, it’s an utterly arresting kitchen that hides hardworking components underneath its flawless veneer. “The hard part was running the electrical and the plumbing between the cabinets,” says Shaw. “It’s a highly customized kitchen – it was like a jigsaw puzzle.”

For seven days in January, the entire Cayman Marshall team put away their briefcases and cellphones, grabbed their spouses, and packed their bags for a week of relaxation and team building in the sun. By Martha Uniacke Breen
I
n keeping with what has become an annual tradition, the trip held its share of surprises large and small, starting on the day of departure: for no one knew exactly where they were going until they arrived at the airport. “We just told everyone to pack for someplace warm,” says Cayman Marshall President Todd Adair. “And we also told them to pack something white to wear, but we wouldn’t tell them why.” Turned out their destination was the fivestar Secrets St. James resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica, for a full week of organized sports and team-building adventures – along with plenty of free time to unwind

and spend time together, away from the daily pressures of a busy and successful workplace. At the resort, even the group activities were kept under wraps until the start of each day. Among the highlights of the week were the two-day Resort Olympics, which pitted Cayman Marshall employees against their spouses in a series of competitive events that included beach volleyball, catamaran races, basketball and tennis tournaments. The hard-fought competition ended up in a dead heat! The final decision all came down to a boisterous tug-of-war on the beach, before the spouses walked off with the trophy.

idweek, the group embarked on a full-day trek to Dunn’s River Falls, one of the area’s highest waterfalls. The team formed a human chain by holding hands as they climbed the terraced rocks of the cascade to its summit, 180 feet up. But the view from the top, and the experience of depending on each other during the challenging ascent, made it all worthwhile. It was during the next day that the biggest surprise of the week unfolded, and the group discovered why they’d been told to pack something white. Melissa, the Administrative Assistant at Cayman
Marshall’s Port Carling office, married her long-time boyfriend Rob in a fairy-tale ceremony on the beach, surrounded by her work family. Along with the various organized events, there was also plenty of built-in free time for exploring the area, snorkelling, sailing, and just relaxing on the beach. At night, everyone gathered together for dinner, followed by lots of music, entertainment and fun. “I thought it was great that even when we weren’t doing planned activities, everyone just hung out together – we had our own spot on the beach and people just enjoyed spending time with each other,” says Todd.
“We’re always so busy through the year that we often don’t get that much chance to get together and socialize as a group,” he continues. “We might want to, but often it ends up just being in passing. So the trip helps maintain and build that sense of camaraderie and true respect for one another, and helps us avoid getting too competitive in our day-to-day work. “In this environment, people let their guard down; there’s no agenda. You get to see the human side of the people you work with. You can feel it happen through the week – it’s the closest thing we can have to being a family.”

THE THOROUGHLY MODERN LOG HOME By Martha Uniacke Breen
Think of log houses, and most of us immediately picture the birthplace of Abe Lincoln or Laura Ingalls Wilder’s little house on the prairie. But actually, according to True North Log Homes marketing manager Mark Wrightman, with a few 21st-century updates, log homes are one of the most efficient building types available today. For many of us, the idea of a cozy log cabin tucked away in the woods has a romance to it that no other type of home can match. But in fact, there are hard advantages to this building method, compared to standard frameand-drywall (or “stick”) homes. One of the most basic differences is that log walls act as exterior, insulation and interior finishing all in one; this makes onsite construction, at least of the shell, go much faster. Once the design is finalized, all of the logs and basic trim are milled at True North’s factory, prefinished and shipped to the site, where they can go up in a matter of days. (Think of the Lincoln Logs you played with as a kid; it’s essentially exactly the same technique.)

But a log home has other things going for it. Log walls naturally retain and reflect interior heat, so it takes less energy to maintain a cozy room temperature. (That’s why it’s misleading to compare the R-value of these homes to insulated stick houses, explains Wrightman, since the method used to measure the efficiency of pink foam insulation doesn’t apply to log walls in the same way.) Unlike a frame cottage that may only last a few decades (and often, end up being torn down for aesthetic as well as practical reasons), log homes can last a lifetime or longer. They are also more environmentally sustainable, in part because a reputable firm like True North only purchases logs from Forest Stewardship Council-approved forests, an industry standard that certifies sustainable log harvesting. True North was founded in 1986 by Mark’s grandfather, Ronald Wrightman, in partnership with his son, Mark’s father Robert Wrightman. Ronald had previously founded and sold another successful log building company some years before, but sold it due to health reasons and was working as a real estate agent in Haliburton. He happened to be selling two cottages side by side one year: one was a wood frame cottage, and the other was log. The log home received an overwhelming number of showings compared to the stick cottage, and his interest was

rekindled. True North was founded with the objective of building homes that combined the beauty of this ancient building style with truly modern state-of-the-art technology. (About ten years later, Robert bought his father’s shares, and the elder Wrightman still returns occasionally to consult.) True North has worked hard from its founding on developing technological innovations, many of which are exclusive to them, that have made their homes exceptionally energy-efficient, longlasting, comfortable and virtually maintenance-free. “At the time we started the company, there were two basic types of log construction: milled logs with dovetail joints, and round logs notched so that the logs sit on top of each other,” Mark explains. “From the beginning we preferred the dovetail method. In our method, the dovetails are joined in such a way that as the logs settle and shrink, they are actually pulled more tightly together.”

Tara and Greg Ramseyer of New Hamburg, Ontario, had dreamed of building a log house for many years. “We run a demolition and excavation business, and in 2016 we purchased a sand and gravel property about ten minutes outside of town. It includes 100 acres and a large man-made pond, which is actually part of the gravel extraction site, so its water is SPRING 2019 49 ■
crystal clear. We realized it was the perfect fit for a lifetime, multi-generational home, with room for us to grow older and for when our kids grow up – we have a big blended family with five kids, all in university – and have kids of their own.” The initial research, Tara says, was a bit overwhelming. “There are a lot of log companies out there!” she laughs. But as they began to educate themselves, two key points emerged. “We were concerned about upkeep, and also about what happens as the logs dry. With True North, all their logs are pre-stained, and the interiors have a finish that requires almost no maintenance. We really liked the Log Lock System: With some log homes you have to climb in an attic space or remove baseboards to tighten threaded rods. True North’s Patented Log Lock is completely self adjusting and is the only positive locking mechanism in the log home industry requiring no maintenance.”
“The dovetail technique works most naturally with 90-degree angles, but making an angled joint can be more difficult,” explains Wrightman. “But we use a patented system called Penta-Post, which lets you make any angle you need. You can use it to install a bay window overlooking a great view, for example; or as we did here, to build the master bedroom at an oblique angle to the rest of the house.” For the Ramseyers, log provides the perfect combination of efficiency, warmth and beauty, and it’s a year-round cottage for themselves, friends and extended family. “In summer, we go kayaking and paddleboarding on the lake, and in winter we go snowshoeing, or we’ll build a big bonfire for family and friends to gather around. Sometimes we see deer pass by the pond, which is really special. And we love spending our evenings out on the deck, watching the sunset. It surpasses everything we thought it would be.”

The Ramseyers’ home feels much bigger than it really is, at 3,400 square feet or so, with huge windows taking in the pond view, and vaulted ceilings that soar as high as 23 feet. One of its most striking features is the wide deck, with a handsome peaked roof over its centre section that allows the family to “live” outside all summer long, even when it rains. Along with doorways wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair should a family member need it in the future, the house sports another technical marvel for a log home: an angled master bedroom, set to perfectly capture sunset views over the pond. 50 SPRING 2019 ■

W MEN BEYOND THE CRISIS: Christine’s Place Pregnancy & Family Support Centre BY REBECCA SPRY
Not far from Huntsville’s iconic swing bridge is a modest building that offers what, for some, is a lifeline, during one of the most serious and often terrifying times of their lives. Christine’s Place is a pregnancy and family support centre, but the care it offers its clients often goes much beyond that. The centre offers physical and emotional support in a compassionate and non-judgmental environment, and helps women find hope for the future. Karen* needed help navigating the adoption process before her child was born. The advocates at Christine’s Place sat with her during her meetings with the adoption agency worker, and were present to offer support as she said goodbye and gave the baby to her new family. Following the adoption, the advocates presented Karen with a special Hope Box, filled with items of comfort to support women grieving the loss of a child.

Tiffany* was single and in her 20s when she found out she was pregnant. Although she really liked the father of the baby, she proceeded with an abortion without telling him. She just didn’t think he would still want her if she had a baby. Tiffany expected relief, but something about the abortion decision continued to trouble her, and it was for this reason that she reached out to Christine’s Place. She enrolled in the centre’s post-abortion program called Living In Colour, which teaches healthy coping mechanisms and guides women towards peace, closure, and new purpose. Tiffany did find the peace and closure that she was looking for. Christine’s Place fills a void in the Huntsville care system: by providing more than crisis care or health services alone, SPRING 2019 53 ■

By empowering women beyond the crisis, we elevate our community.” The centre is the legacy of a courageous woman who, despite feeling pressure from the birth father to have an abortion, chose to give her baby up for adoption. Her daughter, Jennifer Adair, was inspired to found the pregnancy centre in Huntsville shortly after Christine’s passing. Opened in 2011, Christine’s Place provides a safe and confidential space to work through pregnancy or family-related issues, and offers free pregnancy tests, pregnancy options counselling, peer support companions, a professional counsellor, and a 24/7 Support Line (1.800.712.4357). All meetings 54 SPRING 2019 ■
are client-led and offer medically accurate information, trusted resources, and unconditional love and support. The centre receives no government funding, but relies on the donations and involvement of the community. When Joanne* came to the centre, she was alone, nine months pregnant, struggling financially, and battling depression. With no family close by and a strained relationship with her partner, she just needed a support system. First, the centre offered Joanne free access to its donated collection of new and gently used baby items and supplies, called Christine’s Cupboard. They then put her in touch with community networks like the Early Learning Centre for parenting support, and an Equine Therapy program by which women receive emotional support through working with and caring for horses.
Perhaps most importantly, Christine’s Place gave Joanne a safe place to problem-solve and set goals. The compassionate advocates at the centre were her sounding board, a place for her to validate her thoughts and decisions. As Joanne progressed on her journey, her confidence returned, and eventually began to soar. Today, she has completed her education, found a great job, and still stops in to visit her “family” every couple of months. “This is a place where you are welcome,” says Centre director Dottie Barber. “We do not have expectations; everything is client-led.
