Market shows No Sign of Slowing Down The
s summer winds down and the leaves start to change, the air around us begins to cool down. And while we’re looking forward to some cooler weather after the heat wave this summer brought, the local real estate market is still sizzling. Homes in the Greater Toronto Area remain in high demand. Houses are flying off the market in record time. For communities in Burlington, the number of days on the market dropped from 33 to 24 over the summer. In Mississauga, detached homes are selling in less than 20 days. It is definitely still a seller’s market.
With the newly introduced tax on foreign buyers in Vancouver, more and more prospective real estate investors are turning their gaze towards Toronto. The tax, which was introduced in late July by B.C’s Liberal representatives, forces foreign real estate investors to pay an additional 15 per cent of the property’s value. Rather than take the financial hit, buyers are looking elsewhere to invest in real estate. Toronto allows them to avoid the additional tax payment while still providing an attractive and thriving Canadian metropolis for their investment. This will only heighten the demand in the Toronto housing market.

Nine years since its inaugural race, the Rally for Kids with Cancer Scavenger Cup is revving up its engines for another great event this fall in support of the Hospital for Sick Children. The annual fundraiser, organized by event management agency Solutions With Impact, will return to the streets of Toronto on November 4th and 5th, offering participants a star-studded weekend of once-ina-lifetime experiences, while raising funds for the fight against pediatric cancer. “We are looking very forward to this year’s rally as we continue our quest to put the ‘fun’ back into fundraising,” says Joel Hock, President & CEO of SWI. “This is our ninth consecutive year hosting this event.” To date, the Rally for Kids with Cancer Scavenger Cup, along with the summer’s Muskoka Boat Rally for Kids with Cancer event, has raised over $18 million for cancer research, treatment and care at SickKids. The event is one of the hospital’s most generous contributors, accounting for almost 20% of its annual event fundraising dollars.
Cup has also garnered much attention thanks to its unique premise of matching its 20-30 participants with high-profile celebrities as they get behind the wheel to navigate a series of top-secret pit stops across the city. Each pit stop offers an exceptional, thrilling experience, as seen in previous years, like shooting a 30-second commercial, boarding an F-18 fighter jet or responding to a staged emergency on Air Canada’s training flight simulator. And while this isn’t a typical race to see who crosses the finish line first, participants do earn points for completing activities along the scavenger hunt, which ignites a healthy competitive spirit amongst teams. Even though this is the ninth year that the charity event has been running, SWI continues to create new and innovative pit stops to keep returning participants and celebrities engaged in the cause. And, according to Joel Hock, many do return. Some have been participating in the event since its inception almost a decade ago, which has fostered a deep sense of camaraderie amongst supporters.

But, despite the glitz and glam of the event, the most popular and memorable pit stop each year continues to be the one at SickKids. “We incorporate a pit stop at the hospital so that participants can meet the children and see their hard-earned fundraising dollars in action,” says Joel Hock. “During this experience, they have the opportunity to interact with the patients, their parents and siblings and hear their stories of bravery and courage. Once you have that kind of experience, it’s simply life changing.” According to SickKids, the Division of Haematology & Oncology registers approximately 275 new cancer cases in children each year, representing 20% of all new pediatric cancer cases in Canada. Approximately 40% of these children have a diagnosis of leukemia or lymphoma, 30% have a solid tumour malignancy, such as a sarcoma, and the remaining 30% have diagnosed brain tumours. The hospital’s research is not solely 30 | FALL 2016

funded by the government; therefore, they rely heavily on local philanthropy to develop breakthroughs in cancer treatment and care.To join the Rally for Kids with Cancer Scavenger Cup, all teams must fundraise a minimum of $15,000 to participate. The event will kick off on November 4th with the Celebrity Draft Party at the Le Germain Hotel Toronto, where teams who have raised a minimum of $25,000 will choose their celebrity navigator. The team with the highest overall fundraising amount will earn the coveted first pick. This unforgettable weekend also includes the Start Your Engines Brunch at the Real Sports Bar & Grill the morning of the rally, and finishes with the Winners Circle Gala Dinner & Live Auction at the Arcadian Court to close the festivities. While it’s too early to announce the celebrity navigators for this year’s event, past personalities have included actors Kurt Russell, Billy Baldwin, Omar Benson Miller, Kim Coates, Rick Fox and Hill Harper, actresses Goldie Hawn and Eva Longoria, TV personality Leo Stakos, NHL star P.K. Subban and NBA champion John Salley.

Visitors can also visit the nearby Untertürkheim engine factory to see where some of Mercedes-Benz diesel engines are still crafted today. On the other side of our vast earth lays an audacious haven of history, adventure and rhythm. The energy that resides inside HAVANA, CUBA cannot be explained, only experienced. Walking down the dilapidated alleys, surrounded by buildings barely standing while a guitar plays salsa notes softly in the background and Che Guevera eyes you from a nearby pub wall—this is Havana. Havana Entering the city is like travelling back in time. Havana has become known as a rolling car museum. The reason behind this is buried in the country’s tumultuous history with the United States. Fidel Castro, Cuba’s late leader, had held a grudge against their American neighbours for over 40 years. WATCH AS BRYAN AND SARAH BAEUMLER TAKE ON THEIR LATEST CHALLENGE IN THEIR NEWEST HGTV SERIES. By Erica Nelson
What began as a marketing pitch from Bryan to HGTV to provide construction services in exchange for advertising during the network’s other shows, opened the door for his own series; Disaster DIY originally aired on HGTV in January of 2007.It was two years later in 2009 when his wife, Sarah Baeumler, joined him in the spotlight. The two started filming the popular series House of Bryan. THEINVIDIATAMAGAZINE.COM

and each other; it has certainly made us stronger as a team.” “To be honest, neither of us went into the public eye knowing what could transpire. Displaying our family life on TV for the world to see was something we were hesitant to do at first because we were unsure of the consequences it would have on our personal lives and relationship,” Bryan explains.
House of Bryan told the story of the Baeumlers building their own custom home. It gave viewers a real inside look at what it takes to build a family home together as a team, and helped Bryan and Sarah realize that they work extremely well together, complimenting each other’s strengths and weaknesses. “I’m glad we made the decision we did, as we’ve both learned a lot about ourselves and each other; it has certainly made us stronger as a team,” Bryan says.
One of the more difficult parts of being well-known television personalities has been finding the necessary work/life balance. To say that Bryan and Sarah’s schedules are hectic would be an understatement. The two are currently filming two different shows for HGTV with a third beginning in just a few weeks. On top of that, this dynamic duo own and operate Baeumler Quality Construction, Baeumler Custom Cabinetry, Baeumler Approved and the Baeumler Family Foundation. Add to the equation their biggest priority, their children—things can get chaotic! “As the kids get older, they too have busier schedules with school and their extracurricular activities. Our kids live a normal life as any other child would, and we will always be mummy and daddy to them. At the end of the day, our children know that they are at the heart of everything we do,” Bryan shares. He went on to explain how beneficial moving to the country has been for them as a family. It has allowed both Bryan and Sarah to create some distance between their work and home life. And while it may look like they have it all together, they are quick to admit that a true work/ life balance may never be fully realized. “We take it day by day. Communicating with one another and being realistic about what we can achieve in one day are important things to remember. Asking for help is another thing that we have both learned to do. Capitalizing on family time when we have it and making sure we are both fully invested and enjoying the time we have with our kids is something we make a priority in both our lives,” says Bryan.

While the Baeumler lifestyle can get overwhelming, it has had some tremendous benefits that both Sarah and Bryan are incredibly grateful for. “Each of these experiences has allowed us to meet so many wonderful people, from our film crew, who are now like family to us, to the people we meet on the set of Leave it to Bryan, we are grateful to know every one of them,” Bryan explains. The couple also speaks at a number of different home shows and charitable events and love that they have been given so many opportunities throughout both of their careers. On Sunday, September 25th the Baeumlers will begin a new chapter as their newest show premieres on THEINVIDIATAMAGAZINE.COM
The talented couple overcomes some significant challenges throughout the series and viewers will be able to watch the power struggle between Bryan and Sarah as they attempt to compromise on every detail of a project. From property location, to hardwood floors and backsplash in the kitchen—these two work together to create some beautiful final results. “Like any renovation team, we have our good days and our bad days, but in the end I have convinced Bryan that having your wife at work with you every day isn’t all bad after all!” says Sarah.
