pring arrives with the gift of warm breezes, late sunsets and an urge to get outside to be part of the living landscape. Canada provides the perfect backdrop to shake off winter and experience the beauty of this great season. Get outside and get inspired, while either walking the hiking trails, dining in our vibrant cities or visiting wine country estates. Our vast and inviting country is buzzing with activity in 2017. This year is a very special year as Canada turns 150 years young! For the Canada 150 birthday year celebration, Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville and Burlington are all planning special events to engage their respective communities. It is the generosity in giving back to the community that keeps these exceptional cites in such high demand. Everyone wants to live where it is safe, inclusive and fun.

When we reflect on what is happening around the globe I feel privileged to be able to call myself a Canadian. I am so proud of the freedom, the honesty and the inclusivity experienced in this country. When I travel abroad I am always happy to return home to our culture, values and welcoming attitude. I continue to stand by the fact that Oakville, to me, is the most beautiful town in the world. Make sure you take time out this season to celebrate this great country, and what it means to you, with your family, friends and neighbours. I want to thank all of our readers for your continued interest in our publication. I would also like to extend a sincere thank you to all of our new and returning loyal partners for your support on The Invidiata Collection. We are very much looking forward to the coming months and to the opportunities that the real estate market will offer in this incredible time of growth. All the best,

On the grounds of this impressive Estate is a stunning stable structure which has significant historical associations. The stable is associated with the Cox family, who purchased the property in 1909 and owned it until 1988. The stable itself was constructed in 1930. The Cox Estate became known as a centre for horse riding in the Oakville area.

The subject property is contextually significant as a remnant of the area’s rural and agricultural past. The property helped to define, maintain and support the 19th century roots of Trafalgar Township and the Town of Oakville inclusive of the agricultural history, as well as the relationship to the Cox Estate which addresses a deep foundation in

equestrian, hunting and grand estates of the Town of Oakville. The property and stables are physically and historically linked to the surrounding properties, especially the remaining properties that are associated with the Cox Estate. This space currently provides a functioning stable for horses or alternatively can be utilized to host 5 additional vehicles.

BRINGING THE INDOORS

OUT How to transform your backyard into the ultimate oasis BY MICHELLE BOGLE Flipping through postcard memories, we are smitten with images of charcoal hibachis and third-generation picnic tables. Furnishing a backyard with a simple dining set and cart-style barbeque was once the norm. But spaces have evolved into true extensions of the home, complete with elaborate outdoor kitchens, relaxed living and dining areas, and state-of-the-art entertainment zones. In Southern Ontario, they are spaces meant to be enjoyed from early spring to late fall; ones that bring the comforts and conveniences of the indoors outside. This summer, skip the long commute to the cottage and staycation at home in your backyard oasis by reimagining the heart of your home. The kitchen houses the essence of family – the place where loved ones gather together to create, share, eat and enjoy. The same is true about your outdoor living space; a fully-functioning and well-equipped outdoor kitchen is one of the best ways to re-create the heart of your home outside.

The kitchen houses the essence of family – the place where loved ones gather together to create, share, eat and enjoy.

“It brings your space to life,” says Karim Riad from Fire Magic, a premier manufacturer of some of the world’s finest American-made outdoor grills and accessories for 80 years. “Adding an outdoor kitchen to your home will transform how you entertain with friends and family. After all, enjoying good food is a central part of our lives and it brings people together to create memorable experiences.” “When you are selecting a brand of equipment to install in your outdoor kitchen, it’s crucial to think about longevity since this is a long-term investment,” adds Riad. “Our philosophy is that your outdoor kitchen should last as long as your house.”

OASIS TIP Just as the traditional kitchen

“By its very nature, an outdoor kitchen is a made-to-measure custom project, which means that all elements are built-in, including the grill, refrigerator, side burner and other accessories. It’s important to choose equipment that stands the test of time to avoid modifying or rebuilding the island structure in the future.”

appliance-grade 304 stainless steel, which resists oxidation and corrosion.” It’s also essential to invest in manufacturers that pay attention to the details, thus elevating the outdoor cooking experience, like angled interior halogen lights and spring-assisted lids, roller bearing rotisseries, and fully insulated, flush mounted doors and drawers. Similar to an indoor kitchen, an outdoor kitchen should feature equipment that is customized to the cuisine you enjoy, the type of entertaining that you do, and the way that you cook. High-end outfitting demands customization to the fullest extent. “Not only do we offer a wide array of products to choose from, including gas, charcoal and electric, but many features are customizable as well. Homeowners can opt for a grill with a built-in window to enhance its look and functionality or choose a solid lid. They can also select the types of burners they wish – from cast stainless to infrared – and digital or analogue thermometers as well. The ability to customize is a real benefit.”

Just as the traditional kitchen has space to prep, cook, clean, store and serve, so should your outdoor cookery. This includes running water for a sink, an appropriately sized grill with a side burner to cook the dishes you enjoy most, garbage receptacles, cold storage for beverages, dry cupboard storage and drawers for spices, cooking tools and other ingredients, and counter space for prep and serving. It’s more than just a barbeque; it’s a complete kitchen. And, if properly designed, it will not only elevate your culinary experience, but also allow more time to mingle with guests and impress them with the space you’ve created.

Building an outdoor kitchen, while essential, is only part of a backyard oasis – there are other elements to consider as well, like the deck that accentuates your investment. And, just as quality and longevity are key when planning an open-air kitchen, the same is true about decks. That’s why many outdoor projects feature alternative decking materials, such as PVC and composite, for their low maintenance and range of colour options. 52 | SPRING 2017

“Instead of choosing a traditional wood option, like cedar, which requires maintenance and staining, homeowners are investing in alternative surfaces, which offer a realistic look and great durability,” says Robert Hodichak, Senior Designer at The Deck Store, a premier deck and outdoor living supply and build company. “Many of these materials are designed to withstand a lifetime. In fact, you’ll probably want to change the design before you need to change the product.” THEINVIDIATAMAGAZINE.COM

After a long day, a soak in a pool or hot tub is a must-have luxury. But if you are short on space or are averse to regular maintenance, a water feature is an ideal way to infuse your outdoor oasis with calm, serene sounds. “With this type of enclosure, you can be sheltered from the elements or simply press a button to let in fresh air and the sun. This type of versatility is very appealing to homeowners – especially ones where an attached solid roof structure may block the sunlight from flowing inside their home.”

Even if you have a deck or an outdoor structure, a patio or walkway is a wonderful complement to any property, as they are functional and visually appealing too. “In many high-end homes, it’s common to see natural stone used in patios

and walkways,” says Mike Flint from International Landscaping in Milton, a design-build-maintenance company servicing residential and commercial properties for nearly 30 years. “Homeowners choose natural stone for its look, as it’s rugged yet modern, especially when it’s square cut and laid in a linear fashion.” Thoughtful plant selections and careful arrangements accentuate structural elements and add colour and texture. The key is to choose plants that are low maintenance and appealing year round. According to Flint, there are many perennials and shrubs that are easy to care for, including False Spirea, Coral Bells, Barberry and Pagoda Dogwood, to name just a few. To ensure year-round

These varieties include Paperbark Maple, which is a tree that has cinnamon-brown bark that exfoliates in thin strips, or Dogwood, which can have red or yellow bark, depending on the species. an outdoor room by acting as a focal point. Poolside fire bowls, lanterns and fire tables can also add a flourish of grandeur to any open-air design. American Fyre Designs, manufactured by the same company as Fire Magic, offers a full selection of elegant and durable outdoor fire features to suit any decor. To enjoy your backyard well after the sun sets, it’s important to include lighting for both ambiance and utility. For outdoor kitchens, this includes good task lighting over and inside the grill and work spaces, while dining and conversation areas can be accentuated with wall-mount downlights or dimmable electric lamps for a relaxed mood. Solar-powered or low-voltage accent lights add drama to surrounding landscapes, patios, decks, stairs and walkways. SPRING 2017 | 55

“A beautifully furnished, pleasantly lit, accessorized space is what brings family and friends together outdoors.”

Without the right furniture, you’ve just got a beautiful space with nowhere to luxuriate. Contemporary garden furnishings offer more choice than ever before. According to Jim Edick of Southern Living Design, a high-end outdoor furniture and design company carrying some of the most notable collections in the industry (including Cane-Line, Gloster, Lava Heat, TUCCI, Brown Jordan and Dekko), minimal, matching options are

out, while an array of furnishings in vibrant colours, shapes, sizes and materials are in. “The same design principles apply to your exterior spaces as they do your interiors – this is a great opportunity to mix, match and blend. A fully-realized outdoor space requires a fire feature.

When it comes to accessorizing, more is best. Think in layers, like lit lanterns for ambiance, resort-style parasols and shade structures for a touch of luxury, outdoor music for atmosphere, planters for added colour, fire bowls for warmth, and weatherresistant pillows and throws for comfort, pattern, texture and fun. CREATING HARMONY Is it possible to construct a gorgeous backyard that is both pleasing to the eye and kind to the environment? By Tara MacIntosh

A

s Spring blossoms once again, sun-kissed days and relaxed evenings make their triumphant return. These welcome changes awaken a desire to unwind in inviting backyard spaces. Given the current state of the environment, the desire to create a safe green space is top of mind. Thus, the question becomes - is it possible to construct a gorgeous backyard that is both pleasing to the eye and kind to the environment? Speaking with Sue Montgomery, the Landscaping Design Services Coordinator at Sheridan Nurseries, she advises there are 3 main considerations when designing an environmentally-friendly space ― water, soil and plant choice. On the topic of water consumption, Sue emphasized the fact that water conservation is crucial in creating an earth-friendly design. Sue explains, “An essential component to being environmentally savvy is implementing the right system for reduced water consumption”. In the landscaping industry there are 3 recommended environmentallyfriendly solutions when it comes to water conservation. The first is to incorporate the use of low water beds or rain barrels into the overall concept. The captured water will seep back into the soil rather than run off into a drain. Recycling water

68 | SPRING 2017

in this fashion keeps soil moist and, most importantly, reduces the need for artificial watering. The second design option that should be included is the use of permeable pavers. Using permeable pavers will allow water to naturally seep back into the ecosystem instead of pooling on top. This natural recycling will once again conserve water by reducing the need for inefficient sprinklers during very dry conditions. The third solution is to install a soaker hose for even and controlled water distribution. The best part is that these methods of water conservation are safe for children and pets to be around as the absorption process leaves behind little or no mess. The next topic to consider in maintaining a green space is the treatment of the soil. Learning how to maintain soil naturally is the most effective way of keeping an area chemical free. Sue gives an inspired idea for creating natural fertilizer, “A great way to keep the soil nourished is to mow the lawn with the leaves still on top. Afterwards gather the clippings and spread the mixture onto the gardens as natural fertilizer.” The best part is that this natural fertilizer is completely safe for children and pets if they happen to be playing in the garden. The whole family can get involved in the process by helping spread the clippings. The benefits of natural mulch are it looks great in an outdoor space and contributes to the overall health of the garden.

T

he final step is deciding which plants to incorporate into the overall design. It is widely recommended to use drought-tolerant plants and native species as these options will attract birds and insects which offers both beauty and natural pollination. As well, where possible, it is encouraged to incorporate perennials as they reduce the need to replant new flowers year after year. Another popular pick for families are dwarf berry trees and tomato plants. Bringing edible plants into the mix adds to the natural beauty and will provide food that the family can enjoy. Simulating a natural environment in your backyard creates a harmony and a peacefulness that is perfect for relaxation and restoring your energy after a long day.

70 | SPRING 2017

CREATING AN

EARTH-FRIENDLY LANDSCAPE WILL BECOME A PLACE OF RELAXATION AND DISCOVERY FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY. Taking your design a step further, there are state-of-the-art applications designed to protect the environment and help simulate a natural state. Mike Flint, Landscape Designer and Consultant for International Landscaping, referenced one such application ― Dark Sky. Mike explains, “There is a technique called Dark Sky that focuses light downward. The purpose of this is to reduce light pollution in the sky and aid in the natural order of animal migration. Conserving light, water and energy are all part of green living solutions.”

deck this way is beneficial as it cuts down on the chemicals required for annual maintenance in comparison to a deck made entirely from natural material such as wood. Another environmentally-friendly idea is to incorporate glass or cloth siding into a deck design as these materials can be maintained with one hundred percent chemical-free products. Staying true to the green theme, there are additional items that can be included in the overall design such as play structures for children and patio furniture made from recycled or natural substances.

Turning to the topic of recycling, there are ways to infuse recycled and re-purposed materials into the design of the backyard space. Composite Decking is one way to protect the environment and reduce the use of chemicals. Composite Decking refers to a deck that is built with product partially made from recycled material. Building a

A backyard is a space designed for the pleasure of the entire family. Therefore, dividing off an area specifically for the children to enjoy is an absolute must. Developing a dedicated space for children will encourage them to take an active role in building and maintaining the land. Mike comments, “A great way to keep the family in-the-know about green living is

THEINVIDIATAMAGAZINE.COM

to create a vegetable garden.” Creating a garden will allow the family to take an active role in the natural growth cycle. Being responsible for the success of a garden will teach children respect and appreciation for the environment. On that same topic Sue remarks, “Creating a garden does not have to be in the traditional square in the corner of the yard. A space to grow and nurture a vegetable garden will become an intricate part of the overall design.” These interactive areas in the backyard are sure to serve as both fun and a vehicle to get children interested in the environment. Creating an earth-friendly landscape will become a place of relaxation and discovery for the entire family. The natural beauty will take your breath away and provide the perfect place to enjoy those sun-soaked Spring days and star-filled dreamy nights.

lowers have an almost mystical power, and a pronounced role in nearly every culture no matter what part of the world they grow in. Blooming is a symbol of renewal, of life. A bouquet is a celebration, allegory and metaphor, affectation and amplification. They are a declaration of affection or appreciation—sometimes an apology. Flowers brighten our aesthetic, mourn our departed, accompany brides to grooms, represent both love and despair, and inspire and inform art of every form, since the first bloom and petal. But, as an art form floral design hasn’t been given the respect or attention that its practice deserves. An ambitious Vancouver-based company is on a mission to change that.

events in shopping centres that showcase the wonder and spirit of a skilled and accomplished community, built on partnerships with more than 75 local floral designers and leading brands in locations across Canada. The one-of-a-kind experience includes a competitive Floral Mannequin Series in which awards —such as most original, most realistic, and best in show—are presented. The competition includes more than a dozen talented and celebrated local florists who “design fashion-inspired displays brought to life with flowers. Each floral-dressed mannequin is clothed in a one-of-a-kind design made up of hundreds of fresh blooms.” The audience is encouraged to interact, take photos, and engage with the event, and award their own accolade with a fan favourite prize.

WONDER OF FLOWERS. and flower professionals. This May 10th to 14th, Fleurs de Villes hosts an event at the Mapleview Shopping Centre in Burlington, where denizens of the Golden Horseshoe will get their first taste—and scent—of a truly special initiative. It all kicks off with a VIP soiree, an evening to welcome Fleurs de Villes to Southern Ontario in style. Their name—Fleurs de Villes (flowers of the cities)—is meant to connote their mandate of connectivity. Partnered with Ivanhoé Cambridge Shopping Malls, Fleurs de Villes works with “top local florists, designers, growers and nurseries, to showcase that city’s world-class talent and create stunning displays of art.” Karen Marshall and Tina Barkley founded the company because of a shared passion for flowers and floral design. Their backgrounds are varied—Marshall is a branding and publishing authority and Barkley one of the west coast’s most prominent lifestyle experts—but together they’ve created a unique experience in a space that lacked promotion and a globally networked community. But Fleurs de Villes moves far beyond competition and showcase. Marshall sees the company as a mode through which floral professionals and enthusiasts may have their community galvanized. “They

don’t get the appreciation from the arts community,” she says. “[And] don’t often have the opportunity to display their art. [Fleurs de Villes boasts] the very best in local floral design, and gives them an opportunity to shine in creating works of art…[I] wasn’t prepared for how competitive they are!” The first event, in Victoria, British Columbia, was inspired by a passion for flowers, but illuminated the under-celebrated nature of the form, as the “florists knew of each other but had never actually met, and were brought together after feeling quite [separated from one another.]” In “showcasing the very best in local floral design, and [giving] them an opportunity to shine in creating works of art” Marshall adds, Fleurs de Villes has created a niche space—where “no two shows are the same”— for itself to celebrate the wonder of flowers. While currently focused on Canada, they have had offers to host events in China, Dubai, and England. They’ve “built a brand that is quite powerful and without boundaries.” These are vetted artists of the highest degree, a high-end indulgence in both beauty and art. Fleurs de Villes provides a venue for floral professionals and the public to engage in a global conversation about the art and beauty of flowers while creating invaluable partnerships in which communities may really...flourish.

Upon sale, gift or the death of the owner, tax will generally be owed on the difference between the fair market value and the adjusted cost base (ACB). The difference in those values can be substantial if the property has appreciated during ownership. That is when clouds can darken what has until now been a source of joy and happiness. In some cases, it may be necessary to sell the beloved family cottage in order to pay a hefty tax bill. It’s never too early to begin exploring tax planning strategies to help minimize the capital gains tax or defer the payment for as long as possible. You may want to consider these strategies: PRINCIPAL RESIDENCE EXEMPTION The principal residence exemption, if available, can shelter the gain on a principal residence from capital gains tax. A principal residence can include a vacation property, even if it’s not where you primarily live during the year, as long as you “ordinarily inhabit” it at some point during the year. A cottage is considered to be ordinarily inhabited by someone, even if that person lives in that property for only a short period of time during the year (e.g., during the summer months), as long as the main reason for owning the property is not for the purpose of earning income.

KEEPING THE STORM CLOUDS AT BAY: 4 Tips to Help Keep the Cottage in the Family

A

s we pack away our skates, skis and toboggans, and peel off the layers of winter clothes, our thoughts drift wistfully to memories of summers past and our intoxicating hopes for the summer to come. Wonderful weekends at the family cottage, complete with boating, fishing, barbecues and bonfires. Oh Canada, how we cherish the relaxation of the summer cottage—but are there storm clouds on the horizon?

LIFE INSURANCE Although numerous planning ideas are available to reduce, defer or offset the tax liability that may arise on the cottage, one of the most common is the use of life insurance. You can purchase a life insurance policy to offset the tax liability upon death. Owners, however, often overestimate the amount and the cost of such insurance, so it’s important to speak with an expert about this option. USE OF A TRUST One way to own a vacation property is through a trust. People sometimes choose this method to avoid the deemed disposition of the property upon their death. A trust is not a legal entity. It is a relationship that separates the legal ownership of property from the beneficial use and enjoyment of that property. JOINT OWNERSHIP One common technique to avoid probate is to register title of the property in joint tenancy with right of survivorship (JTWROS), whereby each joint owner has an undivided interest in the entire property. This type of joint ownership means that upon the death of one owner, the property is owned solely by the surviving joint owner. This way, the joint owner may be able to bypass the estate so the property is not subject to probate.

For many, the family cottage is a second home; a meeting place where generations gather, creating invaluable memories. No matter who owns it, everybody probably has the same longing…to keep it in the family.

Given that these strategies are complex, tax and legal advice should be obtained when considering these options. With solid advice and advanced planning, you may be able to mitigate some of the potential issues and watch the lighter clouds roll in.

For taxation purposes, the cottage is considered a capital asset. That means, it’s subject to tax on capital gains.

BEHIND THE SCENES AT BUCK PRODUCTIONS: How Oakville’s own Sean Buckley made his dreams come true BY TARA MACINTOSH

Sean Buckley of Buck Productions likes to sit in the back of the theatre and listen to, as he puts it, the heartbeat of an audience. When an audience is responding to a film or TV show his team has created he describes the effect as exhilarating. Sean was born and raised in Oakville. After graduating Oakville Trafalgar High School he studied Political Science and Business at The University of Western Ontario. Upon graduation he was one of two selected to work at Maclean Hunter in Toronto and, although he loved the experience, deep down he had a burning desire to build something of his own. After 3 years he decided to leave Maclean Hunter to embark on his own unique path. Saying good bye to his corporate responsibilities, he embraced another kind of learning - travel. He spent a year and a half travelling the globe working various jobs to be able to get to know the local people. He explains, “When you work with someone, you really get to know them in a special way – you begin to understand their culture, their values and their passions.” This reallife education cultivated his love of people and his love of story. Upon his return, Sean sat at his mom’s kitchen table and announced he would be starting Buck Productions. She was thrilled, responding with, “That’s nice, dear. Can I make you a sandwich?” Armed with determination and a deep-seated passion to succeed, Sean got Buck Productions off the ground. He began learning all aspects of the business by taking on various roles and responsibilities. Buck Productions produced its first film which Sean directed, entitled Last Call, on a budget of $37K. The entire film was shot in 13 days.

“When you work with someone, you really get to know them in a special way – you begin to understand their culture, their values and their passions.” Sean then took the film to L.A. to try to sell it, all the while continuing to work on smaller projects and commercial shoots for clients back home. Having more than one project in progress at one time started as a survival tactic, but as the company grew it developed into a very deliberate strategy. At any given time, Buck Productions will have projects at the beginning, middle and end stages of the production cycle. The company prides itself on telling stories through originalcontent creation birthed from an exceptional idea. This is so ingrained in their culture that they have a name for it – currency of ideas. What that means is each project is designed to pierce through the white noise with compelling content that stemmed from an innovative idea. Sean remarks, “There are a lot of ways to tell a story and within each medium there are again a number of ways to tell that same story, but when you get the combination right, that’s lightning in a bottle.” He continues to say, “If our logo is going on a product we will make it as exceptional as we possibly can.” The Buck Productions team, which is more of a family than a group of co-workers, has experienced incredible success and several awards over the 22 years it has been in operation. In 2016 they received a very special award for What it Takes to be Extraordinary by winning the Best Foreign Documentary at the La Femme Festival in L.A. The team was also recently successful in securing 4 x 10-episode reality shows, all original content, with REELZ in the USA. This is the largest TV block that REELZ has ordered this year in North America, making it yet another amazing achievement. For over a decade Buck has been at the forefront of creating some of North Americas’s most innovative branded content, with hits like McMorris & McMorris for Red Bull Media House. Buckley’s latest film, Milton’s Secret, premiered opening weekend at VIFF 2016. The film, based on a book by renowned spiritual author Eckhart

what would be his perfect day, Sean so beautifully replies, “As long as I’m with my family there are moments of perfection within each day.”

When it comes to documentaries, Buck Productions is very conscious to select socially-responsible subjects and takes pride in knowing the funds generated are donated back to the cause. This circle of giving is immensely powerful. Sean remarks, “What I love is that the story benefits the cause.” One example of this is the documentary Leave Her To Die which explores the orphanage, Agape, that shelters, cares and educates HIV-positive children who have been abandoned by their parents. The proceeds went back to Agape in Thailand.

A mentor gave Sean great advice when he said live your life spending 20 years learning, 20 years earning and 20 years returning. In addition to Buck Productions Sean partnered with J Jolly and Cineplex to bring to life CineCoup. CineCoup started as a social media contest intended to reach aspiring filmmakers. The filmmakers were tasked with creating an exceptional movie trailer with a compelling story in the hopes of getting their film made. Sean has great faith in the talent of young filmmakers in this country and he wants to give back by helping them fulfill their dreams. Out of the 90 submissions, one lucky winner was chosen and the film Wolf Cop was made. Due to the success of this project, the company went on to create ComedyCoup which lead to the comedy show HumanTown, likened to Kids in the Hall, winning a spot in the CBC lineup. Next up – DocuCoup.

At this stage in the conversation the topic turned to family. Sean and his wife, Jennifer, settled in Oakville to raise their children and he considers himself very lucky to be part of this loving family. Jennifer is most certainly the love of his life. He explains, “She has had front row seats as a business and life partner and she has made such a tremendous sacrifice to be able to share this incredible family and business with me.” Together Sean and Jennifer have 4 vibrant girls, the twins Tess who is their songbird and Jade who is the storyteller, Avery Grace who is the dancer and the youngest Adelaide, affectionately nicknamed “the hurricane”. The newest member of their family is Chase, their beloved dog. When asked

When asked what Sean is most proud of in his career, he responds, “Maintaining integrity and the company reputation at all costs.” He is true to his character in friendship, family and the wild world of production. To learn more about Buck Productions, visit www.buckproductions.com.

“If our logo is going on a product, we will make it as exceptional as we possibly can. THEINVIDIATAMAGAZINE.COM

Custom Builders

BY TARA MACINTOSH

With a Difference

Mazenga Building Group Ltd. was formed out of a need to offer building services with the utmost attention to detail. The founding members saw a lack of commitment to detail in the building market and set out to close that gap.

Mazenga Building Group assembled a stellar team composed of extremely talented and highly-driven construction professionals including project managers, site supervisors, project coordinators, and estimators. As a team, they believe in an impeccable level of attention to both the project, and the client, for any build they are involved in. The collective group has over 60 years combined experience in the industry and they take great pride in ensuring each client is completely satisfied with their work. This approach has served the company very well and has allowed them to expand and grow creating their own highly recognizable brand of custom homes, commercial spaces and contemporary urban dwellings.

We demonstrate to the architects that we can build their buildings, follow their drawings and service their clients. How does Mazenga Building Group Ltd. differentiate itself in this seemingly saturated market? The main differentiator is the time and effort they have put into the development of their process. They have developed a sophisticated system of checks and balances that is unique in the industry. Their process allows for complete transparency with the creation of 3 unique tools they have developed to ensure that their client needs and wants are addressed, schedule and budget is met, and proactive communication throughout the duration of their projects. The first tools is the Statement of Success. Each client has a unique view on what defines success and Mazenga Building Group is dedicated to ensuring their clients are completely satisfied with their personal measure of success and expectation. Defining this is the only way, according to Mazenga, to guarantee client satisfaction. Once the success factors are identified for each individual project, the Statement of Success will be drawn up to reflect those values. The goal of each project is to deliver on those values to achieve the highest level of customer satisfaction. The second is the Tender Selection Checklist. This document outlines a complete work-back schedule to show how each step of the building process affects the next and identify time lines of when subcontracts are to be awarded to ensure schedule adherence. SPRING 2017 | 115

The main purpose of this checklist is to outline each step for accountability when it comes to both time and budget. The clients will also garner from this list what their responsibilities are in the process such as deadlines for tile selection, flooring or paint colors. The third tool is Mazenga’s biweekly progress report. This report will show any changes or delays to ensure clients are always in the know and also serves as a reminder if there are responsibilities the client or consultants must fulfill.

Every day in this business is a very exciting day. Their highly-developed process promotes team collaboration and therefore, the most favorable condition for maximum success. Speaking with Damian Briggs, Director of Construction with Mazenga Oakville, he makes it clear that with the experience and reputation of the entire Management Team, they have been able to form strong relationships in the industry. Mazenga Building Group, being an implementation arm of the process, works very closely with the design arm, namely the architect on the project, to ensure the utmost in quality. If any issues arise during the building phase, going back to the drawing is the only way to find the solution. Damian explains, “We demonstrate to the architects that we can build their buildings, follow their drawings and service their clients. This important step allows the group to bid and work on projects with renowned architects such as Gren Weis and Bill Hicks.

116 | SPRING 2017

Mazenga is not only dedicated to providing outstanding construction and project management services. They have been in the industry long enough to recognize that ongoing care and maintenance of a building is essential to its preservation and operation. Similar to a car, building is composed on systems and components that keep it functioning which need to be maintained regularly for its preservation and to minimize unforeseen expenditures. As the builder, Mazenga knows their project inside and out which is why their clients feel comfortable with having them perform any additional service work they may require after the completion of their project. With excitement in his voice Damian reveals the reasons he loves this business, “We get to breathe

rarified air working on some spectacular projects and the atmosphere is never dull. Every day in this business is a very exciting day. The creativity of the architects, and the people involved in the building process, come together to create exceptional outof-the-box design. There is a sense that it is a true privilege to watch grand plans come to life. Mazenga Building Group has its base in downtown Toronto. In January 2016, the Mazenga Oakville division was established to serve clients west of the GTA. Mazenga also has a North division servicing Cottage Country and a Commercial division specializing in high end retail and office spaces. This talented team of builders are definitely ones to watch in 2017. Visit mazenga.com for more information.
