Words From The Editor Saying Goodbye to 2015 We are wrapping up another exceptional and rewarding year at Invidiata. We have built some tremendous new relationships in 2015 and have a well of happy memories that came out of this year. Each one of us on the Invidiata Team is looking forward to a relaxing holiday season with friends and family and we wish you all the same. I would like to say thank you to everyone who was involved in our success this year. We have some truly excellent partners that we are fortunate enough to work with on a daily basis. We look forward to continuing these relationships and cultivating new ones in the New Year. I would like to both thank and congratulate my entire team for their hard work this year; it certainly paid off. 2015 was one of the most successful years for the Canadian real estate market. The year-over-year rise Canada saw in the price of housing for 2015 was one of the highest in the world. The overall 8.2 per cent increase can be attributed to both lower interest rates and favourable buying demographics. The combination of the two has kept the market strong and healthy. The low Canadian dollar has also increased foreign demand for Canadian real estate, particularly in the high-end, luxury sector. Global investors continue to look at Canada to diversify their investments. 8 | WINTER 2015/2016

The growth of 2015 makes all of us at Invidiata very eager to see what 2016 will hold. I hope you all had as wonderful a year as we did and wish you nothing but success in 2016. I hope you enjoy this issue of The Invidiata Collection and have a safe and happy holiday season. Sincerely,

Christopher G. Invidiata THEINVIDIATAMAGAZINE.COM

real estate MINUTE A Look Back Through the Years

A

s we come to the end of one of the most successful and busiest years in real estate that Canada has ever seen, I’d like to look back at our market over the past three years; what has contributed to the sudden rise in housing prices and growth of foreign investors and what we can predict in 2016.

AVERAGE RESIDENTIAL SALE PRICE Between the years of 2011 and 2014, the average sale price of a home in the Greater Toronto Area has increased by over $100,000. While 2015 isn’t quite over yet, we’ve already seen an overall increase of over 10%. In fact, this was the first year we saw the average price of a home in the 416 area code reach $1-million. The question becomes, what has changed so much over the last few years? In the past, more modest homes

24 | WINTER 2015/2016

By Christopher Invidiata were selling for thousands over their initial asking price. This led to buyers believing their homes were worth quite a bit more than their actual value and sellers being completely unaware of what type of home they could afford. By 2014, more realistic pricing took over, leading to a higher level of confidence in both buyers and sellers. Combine this with lower interest rates and a low Canadian dollar enticing foreign investors, you will begin to understand the healthy state of Canada’s real estate market. 2015 is still taking advantage of the more accurate pricing, consumer confidence and lower interests rates, but

this year has had even more advantages than in the past. It was projected that Canada would see a 4% increase to its population this year. Immigration has given the market a massive push for 2015.

PROJECTIONS FOR 2016 Mississauga is definitely the area to watch for 2016. With its proximity to Toronto and regular GO train service into the city, there is a level of convenience that comes with living in Mississauga. New condominiums and a blossoming downtown are attracting young, first-time buyers to this part of the

GTA. Neighbourhoods such as Lorne Park and Port Credit are seeing more and more new luxury homes build up the areas, which will continue to entice wealthy buyers. With the new Oakville hospital finally complete, I predict this will drive a lot of new buyers to the area. Oakville’s luxury market has always attracted buyers who are just as interested in the area as the homes themselves. With great schools, the lakefront and the new hospital, this market will continue to thrive.

AVERAGE RESIDENTIAL SALE PRICE (Greater Toronto Area)

2011 $465,415

2012 $497,150

2013 $522,963

WARMING UP WITH WINE THIS WINTER BY MIKE SPRY

50 | WINTER 2015/2016

THEINVIDIATAMAGAZINE.COM

A

s the leaves turn from loblolly to crimson to chrome, as the central air shuts down and the fireplace warms up, as cottages shutter and skates are sharpened, winter is coming. Summer is over and the promise of cold lingers the calendar. And as the seasons change, so too do our celebration habits, from grand backyard and cottage deck fêtes to intimate festive gatherings. The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes the great responsibility of hosting. But what to serve this year? Are we simply to go down to the cellar and grab the same bottles we’ve been pouring year after year?

The

holiday season

IS UPON US, AND WITH IT COMES THE GREAT RESPONSIBILITY OF HOSTING.

52 | WINTER 2015/2016

THEINVIDIATAMAGAZINE.COM

Choosing a wine has never been easier. Where once we relied on sommeliers to pick our pairings, the consumer has become more erudite and sophisticated with their wine choices. Nowadays, labels provide pairings so that even the biggest vineyard Luddite can guarantee guests perfect combinations, but taking some of the fun and spontaneity out of our holiday planning. It seems that a more educated and confident wine drinker is commonplace, and in the holiday season, as we move from fête to fête, celebration to celebration, we’re getting the same bottles, the same glasses. The wine has gotten better, but our ability to impress guests has dissipated. Why not return the excitement of the unknown and exotic to your holiday parties with some new recipes? With a world of fresh and vibrant ingredients at our disposal, the festive season can be rejuvenated, adding a splash of new sophistication to any event. Our table wines will always be matched perfectly, a full-bodied red, perhaps a big Red Bordeaux or Red Rhône, a Niagara Ice Wine with dessert. But when guests arrive and cocktails are served, why not venture something new and alluring to fill your guests with a glow of awe? Just as we’ve become more learned in wines, so too have we become more literate in our cocktails. Gone are the simple days of highballs and pre-mixed drinks. Instead, we regale ourselves, and guests, with mojitos, bourbon lemonades, and basil gimlets. But these jubilant beverages are born of summer, refreshing conveniences of sun-filled days and warm Muskoka nights. It’s time we bring the cocktail to winter, and refresh our menus, and ourselves, with wine-based warm drinks to enliven our holidays. Jason Griffin, a native Ontarian, is a bartender extraordinaire formerly with the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Montreal, and now plying his trade at the über chic and world-renowned Milos in the always-trendy borough of Outrement. Griffin has created a special duo of wine-based cocktails exclusively for The Invidiata Collection’s readers.

Long Nights & Short Days is a duo of warm, wine-based winter punches. Both are made in a similar fashion, by first preparing a syrup and allowing many of the aromatics to develop before adding the wine. This will prevent much of the alcohol from evaporating. No discussion of holiday wine cocktails is complete without the inclusion of mulled wine. A grand tradition in Nordic countries, our favourite is a contemporary and elevated version of gløgg, the Danish edition of winter’s sangria. Whether you’re hosting a party of dozens or gathering around the fire with a few close friends, these drinks are sure to warm you as the temperatures drop and spirits rise. But these are not heavy beverages that will weigh you down. These wine cocktails are rich in fresh ingredients and the best vintages, winter’s cinnamon and blood oranges replacing summer’s fresh mint and lime. Don’t be fooled by amateur mixologists who suggest that punch-like concoctions don’t require the best of ingredients. These mixtures are not the spiked bowls of your youth, but rather elegant and exceptional combi2 (750ml) bottles Malbec or Syrah nations, delicately balanced to 1 (750ml) bottle Taylor Fladgate impress elevated palates and 20-Year-Old Tawny Port captious taste buds. 3 (3 inch) cinnamon sticks 14 whole cloves Winter is coming. And with winter, the 2/3 cup agave nectar festive season, a time to spend 3/4 cup 66 Gilead Duck Island Rum with friends and family, to toast 1/4 cup Forty Creek Brandy the successes of the annum 1 tablespoon cardamom and look forward to next year’s 1 cup dried cherries promise. First, gently simmer the wine, port, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, cardamom, and orange peel in a large pot over medium-low heat. Add in the agave syrup (a healthier sugar substitute), rum (66 Gilead is one of our favourite Ontario distilleries), and the brandy (Forty Creek Distillery is another Heartland Province treasure, in Grimsby), whose lingering vanilla flavours will enrich the gløgg’s essence. Continue simmering for five minutes until the mixture is steaming, but avoid bringing it to a boil. Mix the dried cherries and toasted almonds together in a bowl; toasting the almonds will remove the bitterness, and add a hint of smokiness to the flavour. To serve, ladle into glass mugs. Garnish each cup with a spoonful of the dried cherry and almond mixture, and a blood orange slice. Serve and enjoy. Scandinavians like to pair their gløgg with ginger cookies, rice pudding or sweet buns, but this mulled wine compliments any course.

AN UNDENIABLE URGE TO THE MOUNTAIN FILLS YOUR HEART.

F Photo: Colin Field

Photo: Marc Landry

or years, the Blue Mountain community has been dedicated to catering to those that not only embrace the winter season, but live for it; the individuals who smile when that first breath of cold winter air fills their lungs, and get a gleam in their eye when the first snow starts to fall. Blue Mountain is for you.

During the winter months, Blue Mountain near Collingwood, ON, turns into a snow-covered winter wonderland. Nestled in the Niagara Escarpment, this is one of the largest ski and snowboard destinations in Canada. While having access to well-groomed mountain slopes at your doorstep may be its main attraction,

76 | WINTER 2015/2016

this quaint little town has more to offer than you can imagine. With a budding culinary scene, a spa selection that takes guests on a trip to tranquility and an exhilarating mountain rollercoaster that takes you on a trip though the mountain you won’t forget, it is difficult not to fall in love with mountain living.

LESS TALKING, MORE SKIING For many, winter is a time of adventure. A time where your adrenaline takes over and an undeniable urge to conquer the mountain fills your heart. With 250 acres of ski and snowboard terrain and a vertical of 720 ft., this is the perfect atmosphere for Canada’s winter warriors. The Blue Mountain Resort features 42 wide-open ski and snowboard slopes ranging in level of difficulty. There are eleven hills for beginners, 16 for individuals with some previous experience, eight for regular skiers and snowboarders, and seven for experts. The area receives an average snowfall of 279 cm a year, with 98% snowmaking coverage. While some thrive on the mountain, there are others who have never experienced the thrill of racing down a hill with the mountain air running through them. For these

visitors the resort offers lessons and training that not only prepare you for the hills, but get you excited to challenge the mountain. Offering everything from children’s lessons, beginner’s lessons and private lessons, the team at the Blue Mountain Resort will have you gliding atop the snow in no time. If there is one thing that everyone should experience while visiting Blue Mountain, it’s the mountain itself. The sights are breathtaking and should be explored to the fullest extent. One of the best ways to do this is through an exhilarating ride on Blue Mountain Resort’s Ridge Runner Mountain Coaster. The coaster takes visitors over 3,000 ft. high and twists and turns throughout the entire mountain’s varied terrain. Riders control their

own speed, so whether you want to soar through at high speed or coast slowly through to take in the view as much as you can, the coaster caters to your desire. .

THE BLUE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE IS HOME TO SOME CULINARY GEMS

No matter what holiday you’re celebrating this winter, one thing most of them have in common is delicious food paired with excellent beverages. The Blue Mountain Village is home to some fantastic culinary gems. A freshly made omelette filled with vine-ripened tomatoes and basil paired with crunchy spinach and strong aged cheddar; can you think of a more delicious way to start your day? If savoury isn’t your favourite taste in the morning, try fresh-offthe-iron Belgian waffles with caramelized apples, vanilla Chantilly and maple syrup. Oliver & Bonacini in the Blue Mountain Village does not disappoint breakfast lovers. After a day of exploring everything that the mountain has to offer, there is nothing the body craves more than to indulge in something delicious. Perhaps an 8oz New York striploin steak grilled to perfection and sizzling underneath a fresh, savoury Atlantic lobster tail would do the trick. Some soft ravioli filled with perfectly seasoned, sweet butternut squash sautéed in brown butter might be even better. Copper Blues is one of the most beloved restaurants in the heart of the Blue Mountain Village with a spectacular setting overlooking the Village Events Plaza.

NORDIC SERENITY Hidden in the middle of the mountain’s natural forest, just minutes from the Blue Mountain Village and the fresh water of the Georgian Bay, is the award-winning Scandinave

The Scandinavian baths are known all over the world for their relaxing effects and ability to awaken the senses. The hot temperatures increase blood flow and help release endorphins into the body creating the perfect balance of invigoration and calm.

WHAT DOES WINTER MEAN TO YOU? Some people feel the temperature drop and immediately think of adventure, exploration and exhilaration. Some people

see the snow start to fall and think of relaxation, indulgence and tranquility. No matter what winter means to you, Blue Mountain is the place to enjoy the season. With 42 trails of skiable acres to choose from, over 40 unique restaurants and boutiques to wander through and a spa that specializes in taking clients far away from the ordinary, Blue Mountain gives visitors a first-hand look at the mountain lifestyle. LIFE IN THE FAST LANE: Grand Touring Brings Luxury to Toronto

Y

BY MIKE SPRY

ou’re spending your Sunday afternoon test-driving Aston Martins and Bugattis. Face it – you’re different. You’re a special breed. And Grand Touring knows that, which is why they’re investing in a state-of-the-art new location in Toronto. But what separates their new dealership from the old? And what separates their clientele from the typical car buyer? Simply put: If you end up in Grand Touring’s showroom, it’s because you desire more. Now, with a new 141,000-square-foot facility in Canada’s cultural capital, the GTA’s luxury car buyer will have everything they need. The first time I was in a car that was not simply a way to get from A to B was when I was six years old. My grandfather, a car lover, took me to an auto show. He and I used to spend hours together pouring through coffee table books filled with chrome rimmed, lusciously curved, elegant machines. And now here I was, in their presence, like meeting a pop icon or film star. I remember crawling into a Rolls Royce, tracing my small fingers over the interior, the dashboard, clenching the wheel and being brought into a world of reverie – of majesty. The day went on like this, bouncing from Bentley to Jaguar to Lamborghini, each moment the

THEINVIDIATAMAGAZINE.COM

continuation of an almost hedonistic extravagance. Being in these cars was like stepping into another world, an impossible dreamscape I never wanted to leave. After that afternoon, each and every automotive experience paled in comparison. My parents’ car, my friends’ cars, all seemed pedestrian – benign. Even as I got older, and invested in my own cars, the experience was lacking – empty. Suburban highway-side dealerships didn’t do the medium of the automobile justice. The bright halogen showroom lights in big box frames failed to return the cars to the waking fantasy of that first irreplaceable memory of affluence. These showrooms seemed the antithesis of luxury. It’s that feeling, that sense of wonder, that Grand Touring is capturing in their new dealership. The 777 Dundas St. East location, due to be completed in 2017, is a five-floor marvel designed by the renowned firms Plaston Architects and Weis & Associates, both of whom specialize in the automotive industry and were given the opportunity to design a dream dealership. The building will not just be the bellwether luxury dealership in Canada, but a visually stunning addition to the Toronto cityscape.

“IT HAS BEEN A LOT OF WORK, But The Outcome Has Just Been Outstanding.” Three showrooms will be finely tuned to the aesthetic, tradition, and personality of the brands they feature. The showrooms will be able to boast 50 automobile creating the sense that every visit is like a trip to a prestige auto show. But Grand Touring’s new location doesn’t aspire to simply be an upscale commercial convenience, but rather a fine-tuned machine, a vehicle to address and surpass the needs of the luxury automobile owner. “It [the new dealership] has been a lot of work, but the outcome has just been outstanding,” says Paul Cummings, dealer principal and CEO. “Everyone from the city, our designers and our manufacturers have all come together for one common goal. It was an equally shared passion to reach this goal for Grand Touring.” Luxury deserves luxury. When you get married, you don’t buy off the rack. When you’re investing in your vacation home, you don’t go to a Sunday open house. These moments deserve attention, precision, professionalism – perfection. In the automotive sales industry, these moments require an experience like Grand Touring will offer with their new venue. The elite automobile industry is evolving, and Grand Touring is cultivating a business to meet the equally evolving needs of the luxury car market. “The luxury segment is growing,” notes Cummings. “All of our manufacturers are investing and bringing more and more products into the marketplace, so we really need to plan ahead for future growth and development.” Cummings is as excited about the new building as one imagines the clientele will be to test drive one of their elite automobiles from Jaguar, Land Rover, Aston Martin, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. “Being able to find this property was a home run. It was previously used in an automotive capacity and we have been able to work with the owners to develop a plan that worked for them as well as us for a mutually beneficial transaction.”

Grand Touring’s efforts and mandate are perfectly in tune with the unique needs of their clientele. They excel in ways that take them beyond a business into the realm of purveyors of luxury. And they’re as eager as their clientele to open the doors. “The part that I am looking forward to most is the ribbon cutting ceremony,” adds the inspired Cummings. “Our employees have been working harder than ever to take care of our clients. They are truly an incredible group of people and I am very fortunate to have them around me. They’re the ones who make it happen everyday and they deserve a new home as much as our luxury brands do.” A luxury car isn’t about status or ego. It’s not about aesthetic or opulence. It’s not about swagger. It’s about reliving that first feeling one has for an automobile, that moment where one falls in love with a machine, with something that is more than a convenience, but rather a mode for reverie.
