ith 2015 coming to a close, both the Invidiata Team and the Preferred Publishing team are looking forward to a safe and healthy holiday season with family and friends. The Oakville and Burlington communities truly come alive at this time of year and we cannot wait to experience all that these areas have to offer during these festive months. This year was one we won’t forget for the Real Market in the GTA. We saw significant overall rises in a number of areas. One of the biggest statistics that we saw go up this year was the average price of a home in the GTA reaching the highest it ever has at over $600,000. We saw some big success within the Invidiata team and I would like to congratulate everyone on their hard work. This issue features a collection of beautiful homes that we hope you will enjoy browsing through. We’ve also included exclusive interior design tips and trends from design expert Shelley Alexanian. You’ll also find a heartwarming story on how a local Oakville company, Christmas Décor, is doing their part for Canadian Military Families this holiday season.

TELL YOUR STORY I nterior design expert and spokeswoman for Alexanian Carpets, Shelley Alexanian, discusses the importance of details when decorating and reviews design trends for this year and next.

With a European sensibility and a passion for creating unique designs in every home, interior designer and decorator Shelley Alexanian has become an expert on providing clients with interiors that are comfortably sophisticated, rich and relaxed.

10

“When people walk into a room that I have designed, I want them to feel comfortable first and foremost. I love elegant and calm colour palettes punctuated by splashes of colour. This also gives the space much more flexibility for colourful carpets, rugs and artwork, Shelley explains. Shelley set her sights on a life of design at a very young age. She had always been attracted to the world of design, whether it is interior, fashion or media; she knew she was destined for a life of creativity. One of the priorities Shelly always keeps in mind when designing any space is that no detail is too small to go unaccounted for.

“Everything that we put into our homes should be meaningful to us.”

“Everything that we put into our homes should be meaningful to us. Our home should be an expression of our personality and lifestyle and supremely comfortable,” Shelley elaborates. This is one of the biggest reasons that Shelley is so inspired by the world of European design. There is a sense of importance behind the interior décor in Europe that is sometimes lost in North America. “Italians in particular nurture their homes; they have an incredible love of home and family. Italy has a marvelous reputation and loyalty to aesthetics. It doesn’t stop at their amazing devotion to fashion. Merging traditional values with modern, they are designers of great ingenuity. This continues to inspire me, as I like to be constantly evolving to mix existing and new designs.”

Whether it’s searching for the perfect couch to fill a space, or the right grain of hardwood to brighten up the floor, or even the perfect doorknob to finish off a room, Shelley ensures every detail of a space is accounted for. One particular facet that Shelley feels is often overlooked is the opportunity for creativity through unique and stylish flooring.

11

“Customized flooring including hardwood, carpets or tile provides so much flexibility.”

will carry over into 2016. She expects grey to take a prominent place in the design world next year as well and a big emphasis on unique textures in the home. Every home tells a story, a story of family, friends, experiences and memories. Shelley and the team at Alexanian Carpets know how important it is to have every detail of that story shine through in the décor of your home. With decades of experience, these are individuals that can ensure you get exactly what you’re looking for. “It is really about getting to know a client’s needs. A home is our personal space, where we do our living. Everything is inspiration. Everyone has different ideas, different tastes and most importantly their own unique lifestyle, which means every home needs to perform different. It is my job to fulfill these needs and create comfort and beauty in a space,” says Shelley.

“There is so much room for creativity in flooring, with every design style imaginable, while still providing the benefits of comfort and functionality. With so many options available, I get very excited about floor design,” Shelley explains. One trend that Shelley is seeing a great deal more of this year is customized flooring. As a spokesperson for Alexanian Carpets, Shelley has the design advantage of an in-house custom department at her disposal. Alexanian offers the opportunity to customize dimensions and styles of any rug or carpet allowing clients to create original pieces to suit personal tastes. Shelley describes these types of projects as artwork on the floor. “There are a lot more stripes, floral patterns and distinct designs coming into play this year. Customized flooring including hardwood, tile or carpeting provides so much flexibility. We can create herringbone pattern, a medallion in the centre, you can border it; the possibilities are endless.”

12

With patterns comes colour, which Shelley says is one of the most interesting trends she’s seen in years. “This year saw a great deal of colour, but what is most interesting is that there was an emphasis on both brighter, bolder colours and also on the pastel side. This is a trend that I am most intrigued by because it is very rare that we would see the brights and pastels in the same mix,” Shelley explains. While colour trends can be difficult to predict, Shelley feels fairly confident that these pops of bright and pastel

“There is so much room for creativity in flooring, with every design imaginable.” Shelley Alexanian

Cheese Please! BY ERICA NELSON

Farmhouse Artisan Cheese joins Kerr Village to become the only dedicated specialty cheese shop in Oakville.

38

INVIDIATA HOME & LIFESTYLE

T

he making of cheese dates back more than 4,000 years, and while no one really knows who crafted the first piece of cheese, it has certainly become one of the most beloved foods worldwide. This is why it was hard for Chris Wood to understand how Oakville did not have a local cheese shop within the community. “It seemed like such a gap in the Oakville culinary scene to not have a good cheese shop where people could get some of their favourite cheeses from all around the world.” Chris Wood and her husband Ron decided that this was something they wanted to change. Chris was previously the co-founder of the successful Oakville business SupperWorks, which she co-owned for 7 years before selling her share in the company in 2012. “After I sold SupperWorks, I wasn’t exactly sure what the next chapter of my life was going to look like. I know I have always had a strong love of cheese, I mean who doesn’t love cheese? I’ve always had an interest and a passion for cheese and cured meat. This is when I decided I wanted to bring a dedicated specialty cheese shop to Oakville,” Chris explains. Chris’ love of the industry stems from her childhood. When she was a young girl, her parents used to love taking her to the St. Lawrence Market in downtown Toronto. They would always arrive just as the sun was coming out, and she fondly remembers strolling through the aisles and instantly falling in love with the market feel. “So many different types of people offering so many different products in one place, there was something almost magical about it. I loved the big deli counters and all the homemade, fresh food that all had a story or a history behind it,” Chris reminisces.

With European backgrounds, both of Chris’ parents were big on entertaining friends and family, which only strengthened her love of good food and wine. Opening a cheese shop within Oakville, the town she has lived in for over 23 years now, was without a doubt the perfect next step for her and Ron. Chris and Ron chose the charming neighbourhood of Kerr Village for their new shop. This is a growing neighbourhood in Oakville and already had some great restaurants, pubs, cafés and shops. They felt a specialty cheese shop would fit right in. “We really wanted to bring some local flare to Kerr Village. I wanted to add to the foodie scene that has been growing so quickly in this neighbourhood.” On October 30th, 2015 Farmhouse Artisan Cheese opened its doors to the public, and so far the response has been wonderful. Upon entering the shop customers will feel right at home. With cottage-like, traditional décor it feels cozy and warm inside the walls of Farmhouse Artisan Cheese. With shelves and tables fully stocked with unique, boutique items, you’ll find everything you need to create the perfect entertaining experience. The staff have been extensively trained on the various products that Farmhouse carries, specifically in the handling, storage and proper packaging of all the cheese they currently offer. “Cheese is like wine in the sense that there’s thousands of different kinds and you’re always going to be learning more as you go. I myself have taken several courses on cheese, and I invited a cheese consultant to the store to help train the staff. He taught us everything from how to properly bring in the cheese, proper storage of each cheese, the correct temperatures it should be stored at, how to handle the product itself in terms of cutting each type of cheese and weighing the cheese. It was really beneficial

having him here partially because this is all information we need to relay to our customers to ensure they get the most out of the product they purchase at Farmhouse.” Farmhouse offers products that are primarily from right here in Canada, but a big portion of the product comes from Europe and the UK as well. If you cannot find a particular cheese that you love, Chris asks that customers share their feedback and requests before leaving Farmhouse. “It is very important to me to get feedback from the community. I keep a book at the front of the store where people can let me know if there is something they want that we don’t currently have. I can’t promise I’ll get it, but I take all of those suggestions into consideration,” Chris explains. Right now, the shop carries all sorts of fabulous cheese from brie to gouda to aged cheddar and blue cheese. You can find various mustards, olives, crackers and cured meats that all pair together to create the perfect charcuterie board for entertaining. And while this is where their focus remains now, Chris and Ron are looking forward to growing the Farmhouse brand within the Oakville community in the future. They’re currently gearing up for the holiday season and have some great gift ideas planned for their customers. Custom cheese and/or charcuterie boards will also be available over the holiday season. “We are just thrilled to finally have the shop up and running and eager to see where Farmhouse can go. I really feel we’ve just added another valuable piece to the puzzle of Kerr Village,” says Chris. For more information, visit: www.farmhouseartisancheese.com Or call: (905) 582-9600

The holidays are always best spent with the people you hold most dear; friends and family both new and old that hold a special place in your heart. It is heartbreaking to think that many around the world aren’t afforded the chance to enjoy this festive time of year with those important to them. Military families across Canada often find themselves missing their loved ones who are currently overseas doing their part to protect each of us here, and some spend the holidays reminiscing on time spent with loved ones who gave their lives to keep Canada safe. This is why Don McQueen, President and General Manager of Christmas DÊcor in Oakville, has made a pledge to decorate one home every year for a Canadian Armed Forces family.

Military families get a Christmas treat - a decorated home. Christmas Décor specializes in top of the line, unique and specialty holiday decorating. They have hundreds of clients, both residential and commercial, who look to them to bring the holiday season alive on the exterior of the their homes or businesses. One thing that is important to Don is ensuring that Christmas Décor does its part for the community it serves. That is why he participates in the Decorated Soldier initiative. Don has a strong connection to the Canadian Military as both his brothers are serving. “I have two wonderful brothers that are devoted members of the Canadian Armed Forces and have served overseas in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Croatia,” Don explains. Don and his team at Christmas Décor have partnered with a Military Family Resources Group that helps them to select a deserving family or candidate every year. One year, they selected a young girl whose mother and father were overseas and she was spending the holidays with her grandmother. Another year, they chose a mother who had lost her son while he was fighting overseas.

WINTER 2015/2016

Don says one of the most powerful memories he has from his Decorated Soldier project was when they decorated the home of a man who had been injured in combat and was suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. “During the whole process, he was extremely quiet. He didn’t talk to anyone and very much kept to himself. It was about two days after we finished decorating his home that I received a phone call. The man was on the other end and wanted to thank me for the work we’d done. I was the first person he had spoken to outside of his family in a very long time. It was an amazing experience,” Don reminisces. For more information on Christmas Décor, or the Decorated Soldier initiative, please visit www.christmasdecor.ca or call (905) 632-2445.

IN TRO DUCING THE NEW CARDIAC CARE UNIT The Invidiata Team pledges to donate $250,000 to the development of the Cardiac Care Unit in the New Oakville Hospital. By Erica Nelson

WINTER 2015/2016

Ten years ago, in 2005, the Ontario Government made a public commitment to invest in healthcare services for the Oakville community through the construction of a new hospital. On December 13th, 2015, after four years of construction, the state-of-the-art, 1.6 million sq. ft. hospital will officially open its doors.

Christopher Invidiata and the entire Invidiata Team are honoured and proud to be a supporter of the New Oakville Hospital. The team has made a pledge to donate $250,000 to the Cardiac Care Unit for the centre. A portion of each sale

THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE HOSPITAL was

done to replace the OakvilleTrafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) which first opened back in 1950. The OTMH sat on 6 acres of land and served a community of less than 20,000 residents. Today, OTMH is the main hospital for over 180,000 residents of Oakville and surrounding areas. The original hospital has adapted and expanded, but has reached a point where growth is no longer an option, which is why the New Oakville Hospital was desperately needed.

Hospital equipment receives zero government funding. Money for equipment is derived entirely from donations. A donation of this size will go a long way in providing patients with equipment that may just save their lives.

“To create with and for the Community, a distinctive centre of healthcare excellence that provides, through the efficient use of resources, the highest quality of clinical patient-centred care to the Community within an innovative environment that supports the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs of the Community.”

“My father was a physician, so I have always had a strong respect and admiration for the profession and the healthcare world. My father suffered a heart attack during his time, and while he did survive, the effects of the attack significantly shortened his life. This is why I specifically chose the cardiac unit, so I can help ensure the best equipment is available to others in the Oakville community who may suffer the same u fortunate incident my father did,” Christopher explains. Christopher has always had a strong love for the Oakville community and stresses how important community is to both himself and his entire team. This donation is just another way to strengthen his bond with the residents of Oakville.

NEW OAKVILLE HOSPITAL VISION:

The cost of funding a project of this size is extensive. The Ontario Government has provided what they can to take this hospital from an idea to a reality, but the town of Oakville has been relying heavily on the generosity of others to help where they can as well.

The Invidiata Team will be the sole sponsor of the Cardiac Care Unit for the new hospital. To show the immense gratitude the organization has to the Invidiata Team, the unit will be named after Invidiata. There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate this partnership. The date is yet to be determined.
