A NOTE FROM JIM BURTON

2014 REAL ESTATE MARKET Natural resources and capital spending fuel economy

Our province will lead Atlantic Canada in economic growth

in 2014 and 2015 as oil-driven GDP is expected to reach 1.6 per cent and then rise to two per cent in 2015. This trend will continue to have a positive impact on the St. John’s economy, as the bulk of the oil industry’s economic activities impact the capital city directly. Economic growth will also be supported by consumer spending and private sector energy investment activity. Business and consumer confidence in the region is among the highest in the country. With multi-billion dollar capital works projects slated such as Lower Churchill Muskrat Falls and Hebron, as well as a booming oil economy, St. John’s boasts one of the highest average weekly salaries in the country. The average house price posted a modest year-over-year increase of 2.3 per cent. However, the greater St. John’s area remains a buyer’s market as inventory has steadily grown over the past 15 months. Since 2000, prices in the region have appreciated over 210 per cent. This being our 4th edition of the Burton Collection Magazine, we hope you enjoy its content. If you have any questions on our Magazine or any Real Estate matter, please do not hesitate to contact me anytime.

The Galapagos: Islands of the Tortoises – and Far More Special for the Burton Collection By: Mark Blazis

The Galapagos Islands have thrilled me 21 times. Like many of my yacht-mates who were fortunate enough to check off this exotic destination on their bucket list, I can’t get enough of the islands, as they always provide new, dramatic wildlife experiences. Whether that’s an encounter with a school of orcas or hammerheads, or a kindergarten of frolicking sea lion pups swimming curiously up to your face mask, there’s always an intimate, unforgettable experience that beckons one back. I’ll shortly be returning for my 22nd cruise with close friends to share the archipelago’s magic. The islands that were first inhabited by buccaneers, pirates, whalers and fur seal hunters were forced up by heat and pressure under the sea floor. The youngest of the islands emerged over a million years ago. Eons back, there were many other islands that grew and subsequently wore down and sank back into the sea, today totally invisible. There is a constant cycle here, a dynamic, ongoing drama that never ceases. Originally lifeless and barren, all the islands were products of volcanic births or violent sea-floor uplifts. Those dramatic processes continue today where volcanoes on Fernandina and Isabella continue erupting. The species that evolved here have been a source of wonder and enlightenment, alternately entertaining us and helping us understand the origins of life itself. When the islands first emerged above the level of the sea, there was no life at all 12

here. Everything that came to live on the Galapagos had to arrive from somewhere else via air or water. The mystery that needed to be solved was how there could be so many new species here that are found nowhere else in the world. If everything here indeed did come from somewhere else, the unique forms must have been the result of some kind of force that causes change. Charles Darwin would explain that to the world in his 1859 publication of Origin of Species. For a biologist like myself who cut his academic teeth studying natural selection and evolution, a visit to the Galapagos was an essential pilgrimage to the mecca of scientific theory that explained the process of natural selection and evolution. One expedition here proved insufficient for me. I was addicted to its rewards. The marvelous archipelago has become a second home, to which I have invited many of my closest friends and fellow researchers to discover the same treasures that have enthralled me. On my last expedition there, my Newfoundland & Labrador friends, Jim and Dera Burton, and 13 other yacht-mates cruised the archipelago on the Fragatta. There are about 85 yachts and larger ships that the government strictly regulates to carry between 16 and 100 passengers. The larger the ship, the smoother the ride. But our 100 ft. 16-passenger vessel provides comfort and an intimacy that doesn’t remind you of D-Day when you’re disembarking to visit an island.

On our 8-day cruise, we would actually visit more islands than Charles Darwin did on his 1835 collecting venture on the Beagle. And we would do it with much more luxury. The 16 of us had 8 cabins, each with its own bathroom and shower. Although one can enjoy the Galapagos all 12 months of the year - and I’ve experienced the islands in all their wondrous variety in all of them - we chose to cruise in April for several reasons. From June through November is the garua - the mist season. Early mornings typically have a mysterious light fog, and air and water temperatures are at their coolest (the latter about 70 degrees F. and demanding a wet suit or shorty for lengthy snorkeling). Seas are also at their roughest, building to a peak in August when big swells and seasickness can be a problem on long, open-ocean, inter-island cruises. During the garua, most of the trees, especially the palo santos, lose all their leaves, giving the islands a gray appearance. The only green then is a low necklace of mangroves that encircles the wet

coastline or a band of green at high elevations where lower temperatures condense moist ocean air. The warm rainy season runs from December through May, when all is green. Gorgeous passion flowers and yellow muyuyus bloom. Seas are calmest, and inching towards the high 70’s, making snorkeling much more comfortable for longer periods of time. And from April on, the entire world’s population of breeding waved albatrosses come ashore on Espanola Island to bow, nod, click bills, woo, mate and make us laugh. Albatrosses are huge, terrestrially comical and aerially elegant. With their great mass, they have much difficulty taking off. They consequently waddle without style to the edge of a cliff – and drop off – shortly after showing their mastery of the air. But upon their return, they are obliged to crash land with all the delicacy and precision of a belly flop. If they could be embarrassed, they’d lament their lack of style and grace. To see their drama is alone worth a trip to the archipelago.

Most cruises either afford an opportunity to see them or to cruise in the far west of the archipelago and observe the endemic flightless cormorant, sitting with outstretched, pathetically atrophied wings that no longer enable it to fly. These birds have evolved strictly to dive, and do so masterfully. Seeing them is one of the great privileges in the Galapagos. The journey to the Galapagos begins at the airport in the charming city of Quito, Ecuador, high in the Andes. Many flights additionally depart from the coast out of Guayaquil. About 600 miles west are two island airports. San Cristobal is the closest and centrally located. Baltra, where we landed, is the other. It’s next to the big island of Santa Cruz, which has most of the resident population of about 25,000 workers, farmers and fishermen. Up in the highlands, they surprisingly grow a lot, including coffee and cattle. Fortunately 98% of the archipelago remains uninhabited, but there is pressure from so many Ecuadorians to gain residency permission here; they all want to live in paradise. Although Darwin would make the islands and their drab little finches famous, the name Galapagos refers to its distinctive giant “Tortoises.” They were initially valuable sources of food, and their copious fat could be boiled down, barreled and sold. Overexploitation made them rare. Today, the endangered goliaths, some weighing several hundred pounds, are totally protected superstars. Their face inspired the creation of the movie character E.T. Their most famous member,

Lonesome George, the last of his race from Pinta Island, attracted millions to the Galapagos. Tragically, he died here in 2012, with no offspring to continue his race. Scientists consequently are captive breeding many other threatened races of tortoises from different islands here and carefully restocking them to ensure their future survival. They are also eradicating the human-released animals, especially goats and pigs, that killed many of the baby tortoises and devoured their eggs. I think Darwin could have deduced his theory of natural selection from just the Galapagos tortoises. Their carapaces or top shells come in three shapes: the front portion where the neck comes out either is very low, projects upward a little or projects upward a lot. Significantly, those three shaped shells are distributed on islands that have variable heights of turtle food. Their presence determines how low or how high the turtles have to reach to feed. On the islands where their food source is low, their carapace grows forward and low. On islands where they reach up to eat the succulent pads of the prickly-pear cactus, the carapace has an opening which curves dramatically upward, enabling those tortoises to easily extend their necks to take advantage of that different primary food source. The Galapagos Islands are a serious classroom, but they can also be pure fun and relaxation. They’re the perfect excuse for a grown man like Jim Burton to crawl childlike on his belly across wet sand to get the perfect shot of a marine iguana snorting salt out of its nostrils at eye level 12 inches away from his camera. Or for Jim’s beautiful wife Dera to join the sea lion pups in an undulating underwater ballet, interacting joyfully with each other in a series of graceful twists and turns, playfully breaking a humananimal social barrier. Here, t-shirts, shorts, sandals and bathing suits prevail. Lying on a beach towel next to sunbathing sea lions or snorkeling among coral or rocky outcrops can quickly place one in a special world of relaxation or excitement. While on the bigger cruise ships you might find someone dressed elegantly for dinner, most yachtmates on the 16-passenger boats dine casually, and the “clothing” receiving the most attention are the shorties and wetsuits on the rear deck hanging out to dry.

Matt, Angela, Helen & Mark Blazis with a Galapagos Tortoise

Blue Footed Boobies are common in the Galapagos

Marine Iguanas are in concentrations up to 4,500 per mile of coastline

TEAM BURTON Re/max Flightless Cormorant is endemic to theinfinity Galapagos Islands

Here, snorkeling among marine iguanas, sea lion pups, penguins, rays, sea turtles, tropical fish, and pet-like white-tipped and hammerhead sharks are highlights that complement every day’s hikes on trails where wildlife is so tame, you need to watch out not to step on them. You seldom need to use a big telephoto lens to get a perfect shot. This is the place to watch flamboyant blue-footed boobies ostentatiously show off their cobalt feet to admiring females and marvel at their big flocks diving synchronously into perilously shallow water, like descending rockets exploding into schools of abundant baitfish below. You’ll want a light daypack to carry water, binoculars and a good camera. Sunblock and a hat will protect you from the intense mid-day equatorial sun. You’ll find on every island the numerous species of little Darwin’s finches, whose beak variations – long and short, thin and thick - from island to island led Darwin to rock the world in 1859 with his longdelayed publication of his conclusions, Origin of Species. Almost all the male finches are black. The females are mostly drab like house finches. Identifying them all is an exciting challenge. A typical day in the Galapagos begins at first light with a 5:30 a.m. wake up on the yacht. Some eager yacht-mates will be already sipping their coffee, eagerly looking at and listening to vociferous seabirds perched in the nearby cliffs where they nest. By 6:00 a.m. everyone boards one of two pangas, outboard wooden boats that motor us to and from our intended island destination. Few ever sleep in. There’s just too much to see. Landings are either dry or wet. Dry landings involve jumping from the panga bow to a rock step, sometimes occupied by a territorial bull sea lion, which the crew gently urges to momentarily give way. Wet landings involve driving up on a sandy beach and stepping into shallow water for access. Sand, water and volcanic rock make proper footwear imperative. Teva-type sandals are the most effective. Walks into the islands require great care, as the tame wildlife is nesting everywhere underfoot and it would be easy to step on baby seals or seabirds if one didn’t pay constant attention. The most obvious birds are the boobies. They’re like our gannets, big diving, fish-eating birds with long beaks. The Galapagos has evolved three species of them, each occupying a different niche so they don’t compete with each other. Blue-footed boobies dive for fish in shallow water close to shore and nest on the ground. Red-footed boobies fly far out to sea to catch squid; they nest in low trees. And masked boobies occupy an in-between zone. Diving boobies tend to go blind after years of concussion, a result of damage to their optic tissue from the multiple traumas they daily experience, crashing open-eyed into the water.

Frigatebirds are the pirates of the sea. They are almost constantly seen around and above our yacht and island shoreline, cruising for opportunities to steal fish from other birds, which fly in from their successful fishing out at sea, to feed their nestlings.

medium tree finch, large tree finch, mangrove finch, vampire finch (it eats the blood of other birds) and warbler finch. Visiting some islands that Darwin never landed on, we saw several species that he never observed. Images of the Galapagos that are etched in my mind include penguins swimming like jet-propelled rockets alongside us; flamingoes, pink from feeding on shrimp; enormous bull sea lions swimming peacefully by our side but aggressively guarding their special territory of beach; yellow land iguanas eating prickly pear cactus; sea turtles swimming like slow-motion ballerinas; Post Office Bay, the unofficial drop-off spot, since whaling days, of letters left for visitors to bring home to whomever is addressed; the planet’s rarest raptor, the Galapagos hawk, which has a total population of just over a hundred individuals. In this land of volcanoes, one can walk inside lava tunnels and tubes and see the consequences of the forces of nature that form our planet. Visiting the Galapagos is an opportunity to see evolution at work. One leaves with no doubt that Darwin’s theory is absolutely sound. The Grant study of Daphne Major, a small volcanic island, showed that beaks of Darwin’s finches can change rapidly, in just a year or two, as a competitive response to changes in moisture and food supplies. Bills were seen to become shorter and thicker in only two years as a response to the increased availability of thick-coated seeds.

The frigatebirds will often grab the wing or tail of a beautiful tropicbird, until it disgorges its hard-earned fish. The frigatebird is so agile and quick that it often can catch the dropped fish before it lands on the water. When male frigatebirds try to attract females, they sit atop a bush, inflating a huge, bright red breast sac the size of a balloon. As soon as they see a female fly overhead, they try to show off their big sac to lure her down. Endemic species found only in the Galapagos include the lava gull, lava heron, Galapagos dove, Galapagos mockingbird, Hood mockingbird, small ground finch, medium ground finch, large ground finch, sharp-beaked ground finch, cactus finch, large cactus finch, small tree finch,

“Frigatebirds are the Pirates of the Sea”

An expedition to the Galapagos is an education in biology and geology. But for my son Mathew and his bride Angela, it was their romantic honeymoon destination, greatly transcending science. And therein lies much of its attraction; it can give you all you’re capable of demanding. For me, living on a yacht with one’s friends amid wild, natural treasures is a bonding experience that makes us all closer – and beckons us to return to further immerse ourselves in the wonders of the Galapagos Islands. Lieutenant Comm Robert Farrell

Surgeon in a

mander

AR ONE By: Lynn H. Kielley

The sign read: ‘No Flip Flops, No Cut-Offs’, no this, no that, ‘No Military Personnel Allowed Without a Weapon, No Exceptions.’

“That was a huge jolt of reality. It was my first deployment. I had just arrived. It was lunchtime, so I went to the cafeteria and the first thing I saw was that sign. I had to go back to my quarters and get my standard issue semi-automatic C7 before I could get my lunch,” laughed Lieutenant Commander Farrell, better known here at home as Dr. Bob Farrell. Dr. Farrell sat in my kitchen one stormy morning in December and told me a little about a doctor’s life in the military. In top physical shape, he embodied a lifestyle of healthy living - I presume adapted from his life in the military, although I do remember reading that to be a surgeon required physical strength and stamina. My visual impressions were accompanied by an intuitive feeling: Dr. Bob Farrell is no ordinary doctor. Bob laid out the basics for me. “Born and bred in Corner Brook, father a doctor, mother an O.R. nurse, a large, very close, very tight, very Irish Catholic family. I did a General Science Degree at Memorial, Honours Degree in Human Biology from the University of Guelph and back to Memorial for a Masters in Physiology. I applied to medical school, but with several years of university completed, the funds were getting low.”

37

An Unusual Education “I knew the military provided MOTP (Medical Officer Training Plan) programs and I saw an opportunity for me to do medicine without incurring a lot of debt. I applied and I was accepted.” Bob didn’t start his military career until he graduated from medicine and, by the time he was summoned to training, he had gotten married and had two kids. Bob’s life was off at a pace it would maintain. “Following basic training I was assigned to the National Defence Medical Centre (NDMC) in Ottawa and then to Sadacona, Halifax. My next stop was the Artillery Unit as a family doctor in Petawawa, then Cyprus, followed by a year on a ship.” He adds, “I did a Ships Divers course and a course in Hyperbaric Medicine. It interested me. “ When he expressed a strong desire to become a surgeon, the military sent him back to St. John’s and medical school to specialize. “Following my training I was sent back to the NDMC where I worked as a surgeon on the civilian side, as well as the military side. To keep my skills high I did locums, rotating between NDMC and Carbonear General Hospital. Then, as needed, I was deployed overseas.” Bob adapted to military life well and found it to be stimulating, even interesting. He did tours of duty in Cyprus, Haiti, two in Bosnia, and two in Afghanistan. Tours were three to six months long, including two weeks to get there and two weeks to get back. He was on call for periods in excess of 56 days straight at times.

Rules of War “Officer training is mandatory for physicians. You can’t go as a non-commissioned officer. As a physician you have a leadership role. In the military your number one job is that of a soldier and your next job is your trade. You do weapons and fitness training, carry a weapon and you are expected to be ready to deploy at a moment’s notice.” Officer status I understood, but I didn’t get how a doctor could be anything else but a doctor first.

“We’re told soldier first. Whether or not we believe it is another story. I’m always a physician first. Well, I am a husband and a father first, a physician second and a soldier third.”

38 38

I asked about work in the field, Medevac Units. “We were one on one, one surgeon per operating team. Surgeons were too valuable to the military to risk their lives more than necessary, so we were hardly ever deployed outside the wire.”

I was curious: Did Canadian surgeons also work on Taliban or civilians? “I had an interpreter with me as we did do some humanitarian aid, mostly in Bosnia and Haiti. Afghanistan? It was different, very busy, so soldiers came first. When we treated Afghans we never knew if they were friendly, Afghan National Army or Taliban. Until we figured that out, it got interesting. An Afghan who came to us for treatment was completely stripped and blacked-out ski goggles were placed over their eyes. It was a matter of security. You didn’t know if they had an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) strapped to their body, and those first few minutes were always scary.”

Ramp Ceremonies – a sobering reality I know of war-torn countries, war zones and of Canadian soldiers putting their physical selves in jeopardy, but I can understand it only at one level and that isn’t a level of firsthand experience. I can’t summon a feeling I have never felt or an image I have never seen other than on a screen or in a book. I have no idea, no concept of what it means to be a soldier. Dr. Farrell does and it accounted for twenty years of his life. “Kandahar was the busiest and the scariest. There were many troops there; I think 35 different nations at that point in time, all part of the multi-national force. We provided surgical support for the entire contingent. There were bombs every second night.

One came so close we had shrapnel go through the hospital.” Dr. Farrell asked me if I knew about RAMP Ceremonies. I didn’t, so he explained. “People have no idea what war is all about, only the Hollywood version.” “Reality check is when you step off the plane in Afghanistan, feel the heat and smell the air. When you stand on the tarmac at 6:00 a.m. for a RAMP ceremony, see the caskets roll up and roll into the back of the plane, it is spine chilling and it is probably the most sobering thing I have seen in my entire life. It puts things in perspective. Why are we here? What are we doing? How lucky are we to live in a free country?”

39 39

What we don’t talk about when we talk about war Bob reiterated many times that soldiers don’t talk about their experiences and usually people don’t ask, but he did tell me of a circumstance that came up in Afghanistan. “We had a patient transferred to us from another hospital in critical condition for what we call an attempt at ‘salvage surgery’. At the same time, we were alerted to a multi-casualty situation. We only had ten units of blood left after having given this particular patient about six or seven units already. He would need many more units of blood and still his condition was essentially hopeless. He was losing blood from multiple injuries at a rapid rate. Between myself and the anesthetist, we had to make a conscious decision to abort the salvage surgery in the hopes of saving lives that were potentially salvageable waiting in the wings. It was very hard. You have to make those decisions in split moments. You have to think about what you have available, what is possible and incoming casualties.” I couldn’t imagine having to make such a decision. I didn’t know how to respond and was glad when Bob continued. “There was a British soldier who came in. He was out in the field where he fell victim to an IED. The Medics saved his life. They put tourniquets on his legs and stabilized him, stopped him from bleeding to death. They got him back to us, but his legs were bad and, although I had to amputate one of his legs, I did manage to save the other. We then air evaced him out to Germany. Anyway, we received a really nice letter from him thanking us for what we did, saving his right leg, telling us he can move around, he’s mobile and doing well.” “That’s really something,” I replied. Bob smiled, “Yes. Yes, it is, but I never take responsibility. We’re part of a team. The Medics did everything right. They got him to us alive.”

No Ordinary Doctor Would you do it again Bob - join the military? “Maybe. If I got bored,” he jokes. “I’m still in the reserves and now I can pick and choose. If I were called to go back to Afghanistan the answer would be no; other UN or NATO deployments for sure. I get a lot of satisfaction out of humanitarian work.” Life is not boring for Dr. Farrell. He has four kids, one going for his PhD, another graduating from medicine in May and onto Pediatrics, one in her second year and the baby is ten. He is the Chief of Surgery at Carbonear General Hospital, an Associate Professor at Memorial Medical School, serves on the Admissions Committee and sits on the Medical Council of Canada. He received the Gold Medal in Surgery in medical school, and in February 2014 The Rotary Club presented Dr. Robert Farrell with the Paul Harris Humanitarian Award for his contributions both at home and internationally. Bob told me he had appeared on the CBC series “Dragon’s Den” and, along with a few other Newfoundlanders, had gone mummering while deployed one Christmas, all safely armed with the Mummers Song and a cassette player. Also, upon moving to Topsail, he and his family were disheartened that the area didn’t attract many kids on Halloween. He vowed to fix it and he did by once a year transforming his house into the scariest in the community. Since then, Halloween has been a growing success at the Farrell residence with better than a thousand visitors this year.

40 40

Indeed, Dr. Robert Farrell is no ordinary doctor.

YORK Developments

Recognition By: Lynn H. Kielley

From left to right: Deep Shergill, President CHBA National. Centre, Peter Batson, Owner York Developments. Far right, Darren O’Keefe, President CHBA-NL

Peter Batson founded York Developments in 2005. The company is growing steadily and experiencing good success both in St. John’s and Gander. Still a young company, YORK is doing impressive work that is being recognized.

This year YORK Developments entered the 5th Annual BERG (Building Excellence & Residential Growth) Awards winning two out of the three categories entered. In my books, that’s recognition worth bragging about and so I decided to pay Peter Batson a visit and he was kind enough to let me take a few minutes from his busy day. Peter impressed me as being all business all of the time but in a good way. He seemed an upright kind of guy who works hard to deliver on his commitments. He told me a little about the BERG Awards YORK received from the Canadian Home Builders’ Association.

Celebrating Quality

“We are extremely proud and humbled by the recognition from the Builders’ Association and our peers. One of the awards was in the category of ‘Special Builds over 2200 square feet’. In the past few years we have built several custom homes. We received this particular award for a home we built on Pringle Place. It was actually a very unique custom home with a lot of extras. The home was a mix of various designs and required careful attention to detail. The construction of a custom home takes meticulous planning and can be challenging but also very rewarding. Working on the construction of a truly unique custom home makes one feel proud of their own abilities,” he smiled. 42

“We also took the Multi-Family Condo Award for design and construction. Westfield Condominiums earned YORK this award for its quality green energyefficient construction. The design is to the credit of KMK Capital and their concept based on affordability. Westfield is affordable to those who are starting out, young professionals, single families or retired people. The design worked to maximize the land, therefore keeping units affordable. And with the cost of housing today a project such as Westfield was something that was needed. It is a clever development and at a price point that appeals to many people. The units are a thousand square feet, easy to heat and maintain. Open concept, each unit has its own exterior entrance, back gallery and quality materials throughout. The buildings are attractive and the design is unique for condo living. The location is perfect, close to schools, shopping, hospitals, downtown, everything.”

Education Skill Passion Some of us know from the time we are very young what we’d like to do in life. Some of us follow that passion and we get it right. Peter got it right. “Starting out, I was sure of only one thing; I wanted a university degree. I chose business and I decided on St. FX University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. It is a good university in a nice town. I met my wife who was from St. John’s and came home where I completed my degree at MUN. Now I had the degree but, like many kids, I still didn’t know what I wanted to do. One day a friend of mine, Trevor, mentioned to me that I should consider this carpentry course and it clicked with me. I did the course and loved it. Although I don’t do hands on much anymore I still love it. My dad was in construction and I was around it when I was a kid. I had a passion for it even then.” Driving through St. John’s, passing homes and buildings that you and your company built or significantly changed or restored has to be a wow! He agreed and expanded on my thought, “When you’re framing a house you are building something right in front of you and you see it go up. It’s kind of a neat feeling actually.” A degree in business and a desire to build things has turned out to be a very successful combination for Peter Batson. From left to right: Bobby Batson, Kaelam Power, Adam Clarke, Peter Batson

43

Success is a Two-Way Street “After I finished my business degree and a trade in carpentry I bought a house down on York Street. It was a fixer upper, the first one I ever did on my own. I renovated that one myself. It took about eight months. I started the company shortly after and was looking for a name. It seemed fitting to name it after the street on which I successfully executed my first project. I still like the sound of the name, ‘YORK Developments’.” I agree with Peter. YORK is a strong name that wears success well. “That’s a cool story,” I said. “Yea,” replied Peter. “But you know, I believe that is the first time I have ever told it.” Even better, I thought. I asked Peter the secret to YORK’s success. “I have a really good team consisting of staff and sub-trades and there’s the secret; keeping good, professional trades people. We treat them fair, the work is guaranteed, we pay on time and in return they never let us down. These guys are fabulous at their work and without them we wouldn’t be able to complete projects or to offer our type of quality construction. The sub-trades really make it happen. We’re happy with them and they’re happy with YORK Developments and so it works,” Peter shrugs. 44

“ We are extremely proud and humbled by the recognition from the Builders’ Association and our peers”.

The Specs Look Great The plan for YORK is growth, steady and sure. YORK Developments specializes in residential but also do commercial work and plan to do more in the future. The sky is the limit for YORK Developments and their team of professional, hard working people.

One final observation, Peter Batson is the boastful type. He boasts constantly about his team, consistently about their work. Peter’s degree in business is serving him well. As any businessperson managing a successful customer-driven business would tell you, success is built by team effort. I do know what Peter Batson, owner of YORK Developments, would tell you.

Curb Appeal By: Dennis Flannigan

Just like hiring a professional Real Estate Agent, it’s probably a good idea to invest in a quality landscape consultation to improve your curb appeal. Touring your property with a pro will get you headed in the right direction. It’s important to ensure your curb appeal leaves a positive lasting impression with potential home buyers. Here are a couple of things RE/MAX wants to share with you:

Firstly, review the hardscapes such as patios, walkways, steps, fences and decks. These surfaces should be solid, safe and presentable. Do you need minor repairs or are you better off replacing? This will depend on the condition and age of the structure and budgets. Secondly, inspect the large trees on your property. They can often be a great attribute, adding shelter, shade and value to your landscape. Danger signs to watch for are death or damage to large limbs causing them to be a hazard to property and/or people. An arborist may have to be called in if the problem is severe.

Thirdly, take stock of the flowering shrubs and

perennials. Often an overhaul is needed either by pruning, dividing or replacing some plants. This can drastically improve the look and vigour of flower beds. Overgrown gardens often take away from the features of the house and just give an unkempt look.

48

How to get your property looking like it’s Fit to Sell Fourthly, look with a critical eye at open spaces such as

lawn areas. Often they have come under wear and tear from children playing, neglect or too much shade. Depending on the time of year it is possible to restore these eyesores with new sod or a covering of mulch. And finally some advice on the finishing touches. Properly planted containers, pots and window boxes can give your

property a fresh floral look, a face-lift that can often make the difference to potential buyers. Today, people know the true value of a well-designed, planted and maintained landscape. Your RE/MAX Agent will help you maximize the resale value of your home when it comes time to sell.

Visit: FitToSell.ca for more information on Curb Appeal.

LeDrew’s

Moving Through Time By: Lynn H. Kielley

Moving is said to be one of the most stressful events in a person’s life; right up there with divorce, sickness and death. Who’d know the effects of moving better than a family that has been moving other people’s prized possessions for over a hundred years? 52

“Ours is a personal service. When you go into someone’s home, pack up their belongings, their mementos and their treasures, it doesn’t get much more personal, ” says Martin LeDrew, owner and manager of LeDrew’s Domestic Moving and Storage. I recently chatted with Martin and his father, Rex LeDrew. Rex decided to join his son and reconnect with the family business upon leaving his position as CEO of the St. John’s International Airport Authority. “Many people retire because they feel they have to. I don’t feel that way and so I don’t intend to retire,” says Rex.

Rex made his choice, but Martin seems to be a target of destiny. He had been living in Toronto with no thoughts of ever coming back to Newfoundland; that was, until Allied Van Lines came to him with an offer that would place him in a business that had originated with his family over one hundred years ago. A Newfoundland company with a history spanning generations, it has changed owners and has come full circle back to the LeDrew family. Rex LeDrew filled me in on a little of the company’s history, and his son, Martin, gave me an overview of the business today with a glimpse into its future. I found both father and son to be as engaging as was the backstory of LeDrew’s Express.

Cartage to Trucking – A Timeless Industry

“LeDrew’s Express is the name of the company started by my grandfather in 1907.” Rex begins, “Grandfather’s name was William. He was born in Bally Haly and educated at Bishop Feild College. Having finished school, he decided to seek his fortune in the United States. He travelled to Boston where he married my grandmother and started a cartage company. Back in those days the moving business was a horse and cart operation. The company was successful in Boston and my grandfather decided it could be just as successful in Newfoundland. He came home and started LeDrew’s Express, a horse and cart moving company. In those days, everything was shipped in wooden boxes by boat, and drivers would collect the boxes, load them on the carts and deliver them.

The Competition

As Rex spoke, I envisioned horse drawn carts travelling the muddy, dusty roads of old St. John’s, transporting their heavy loads all over the city. I have viewed the scene many times

My grandfather operated his business from a farm on Torbay Road. The area around Montgomery Street and Bella Vista was all part of LeDrew’s Farm. In fact, Bally Haly was owned by the LeDrew family at one time. Later, William’s son, Doug, my father, joined him and they relocated to Barnes Road where they also had stables. In 1946 they bought their first truck and it was then that they changed the name of the company to LeDrew’s Motor Express and specialized in picking up baggage and other items from the railway and the many wharves on the harbour for delivery to people’s homes and businesses. The company has gone through many changes in ownership and only this year did Martin and I get the rights to the name LeDrew’s Express again.”

in old archival film footage. This thought led me to wonder how many cartage companies were in operation; did William LeDrew have many competitors back in the early 1900’s? 53 53

Rex sighs, “Everything changes and in some ways everything remains the same.”

Rex replied, “My grandfather’s brother, Harry LeDrew, had a horse and cart business as well. The brothers competed on Water Street for business. In those days, a customer would display a coloured card in their storefront window to inform a passing rig there was a load to be moved. There was a specific card colour for each company. Even so, they would often steal each other’s loads. No, it wasn’t harmonious; they bickered quite a bit. And in a way, we’re still doing the same thing a hundred years later. My brother’s sons are in the moving business as well and in some areas of the business we still compete.” Rex sighs, “Everything changes and in some ways everything remains the same.”

It Must Run in the Family

A successful entrepreneur, Rex has an impressive history of his own. He worked with his father, and at the age of fifteen he ran the office and handled all of the accounting aspects of 54

the business. Shortly after Rex finished high school his father sold the business to a company in Nova Scotia and the LeDrew men worked for them. Later, his father and Rex’s brother, Bob, started LeDrew’s Express again and Rex joined them a few years later, but eventually left the company to go out on his own. Rex LeDrew started the first McDonald’s franchise in Newfoundland on Topsail Road, then a second and a third. In the meantime, his father and brother once again sold LeDrew’s Express. Bob went to work for the new company, he ran it, but eventually left to start his own moving company with his two sons.

“Me Too” – A Federal Program

Martin was indoctrinated into the business at age eight. As he tells it, “I went on my first road trip to Nova Scotia with a driver who worked for the family. Mom cried and my dad gave me an expense report and some cash, telling me to keep a record of it. And that was my first experience with learning the business,” he smiles.

Back in the early years the biggest customer was the Federal Government, but there was no one mover that could handle all of the work and, therefore, the government started something known as the “Me Too” Program. The government began to issue licenses to companies and the process enabled them to hand out jobs in turn. When an owner retired or left the business, the license was sold. A license was worth a lot back then and Martin’s grandfather, Doug LeDrew, being a smart businessperson, bought up as many of these licenses as possible. He gave each new license a new company name. There was Domestic Moving, LeDrew’s Express, LeDrew’s Moving and Storage, and LeDrew’s Trucking. The more licenses you owned the more government work you could bid. Through the years, the company licenses were sold to other operators in Nova Scotia (Hoyt’s and Allied Van Lines). Today a license is not required to operate a moving company.

Legacy - Providence or Both

Martin lived and worked in Toronto until one day an unexpected opportunity presented itself. “I had no thought of ever moving back to Newfoundland until this day a friend of mine who sat on the board of Allied Van Lines called me. He told me Allied had decided to sell Domestic Moving and Storage in Newfoundland and asked if I were interested. I was and we worked out a deal. I came home and started running the company. There was a load of upgrading to be done, new trucks and so on. Now thirty years later I get a call from an acquaintance, a man I had worked for in Toronto. He had bought Hoyt’s and, with it, the name ‘LeDrew’s Express’. He asked me if I’d like to buy the name back. While he wanted way too much money and I told him so, we did manage to strike a deal, and so today LeDrew’s Express is back home where it began and we are now LeDrew’s Domestic Moving and Storage.”

A Century of Change

In 1907, a young William LeDrew had what he considered a great idea to start a business that moved all types of things from downtown to uptown. Now more than a hundred years later, his family is still in the business; only now they move items all over the world. Back then, moving a piano was considered a specialty, but today Martin’s company successfully relocates people to China, Australia, Middle East, all over the world.

56

Martin smiles, “Oh, yes, it is much different today. The business is growing and it’s due to our economy. Oil companies are continuously moving people and their families in and out of the province. We specialize in overseas moves, as well as domestic. We also specialize in other areas you may not expect.” Pausing for effect, then smiling, Martin

continues, “We are a major supplier to the health care sector, supplying specialty transportation, expedited courier services, transportation of laundry, bio-medical waste and such. We also are a consignment agent for surplus medical equipment. This is where dad comes in, researching and securing new business opportunities.” Businesses depend on the trucking industry to deliver products safely. Without trucks, goods could never travel from rail yards, ports and airports to their final destinations. Today’s economy depends on the trucking industry as it once depended on the cartage companies. As Rex said, the more things change, the more they remain the same. It is a much different business today than in the day of William LeDrew. But the one thing that hasn’t changed in Newfoundland? When people need to move a household or product they still call on the name LeDrew.
