The Japanese Shizuoka Stadium hosted one of the most difficult matches in the Brazilian fifth World Cup title campaign. The team got to the quarterfinals with the best forward line in the competition and had to face England, a group that had the least penetrated defense. The mission, proven not to be easy, occurred when coach Sven-Goran Eriksson placed the English Team in two lines of four athletes, congesting the sides of the field and not allowing space for individual moves. JUST FOR SHOW The legendary Wembley Stadium was demolished in 2003, 80 years after it´s construction. In its place, a new arena with a 90,000 people capacity was built and inaugurated in 2007. For the English Team´s return to the venue, the opponent could not be any less popular: Brazil, a squad that was preparing for the Venezuelan America Cup. Despite of the preparation, the Brazilian team was counting on Ronaldinho and Kaka, which were not drafted for the South American tournament. In favor of Brazil was an invincibility of 17 years—the last English triumph had occurred in the old Wembley in 1990. Since then, three defeats and three ties for the English team. The home

team´s hope laid in the return of David Beckham; he had been put aside by coach Steve McClaren through the team´s renovation process. However, the bad results made for his reintegration. Prior to the kick-off, an honorable presence: the President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva greeted the athletes. As the ball rolled, Brazil went after it with the English betting on the counter attacks. Even so, the only goal opportunities during the first half of the game were two fouls, kicked by Beckham at the 29th minute and Ronaldinho five minutes later. Gilberto Silva, a midfielder, was able to score against goalkeeper Robinson, but Vagner Love, in an offside position, got in the way of the English player. The second half started off balanced, but England took over the game until the 68th minute, when John Terry took

a foul shot (done in favor of Beckham) and scored. Dunga, the Brazilian coach at the time, put Diego and Afonso Alves (a rookie in the team) in the place of Robinho and Kaka. There was great pressure and without giving up at all, at the 91st minute Brazil was rewarded— Diego received the ball in the goal area and hit it with his head, scoring. Minutes later, Markus Merk, the German referee, blew his whistle ending the match. This made for the first presentation of the English team at the new Wembley to be a tied match.

The construction for the “Football Temple” started in August, 1948. The inauguration for the venue projected by architects Rafael Galvao, Pedro Paulo Bernardes Bastos, Orlando Azevedo and Antonio Dias Carneiro happened only in June, 1950, a shortly prior to the World Cup in Brazil. In a battle between all-state Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo teams, the midfielder Didi, a Fluminense player, was responsible for scoring the first goal in the stadium. Even so, his team was defeated with a score of 3 to 1. On the same year of its inauguration, Maracana had the largest attendance in its history. This tournament was held in many different stadiums, only the final phase took place in Rio de Janeiro. There were six games in the semi-finals involving Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. On the last game before the title, Brazil faced Uruguay and won with a 1 to 0 score. Four years later, the National Team created another striking moment within the stadium. On the last game of the qualifying tournament for the 1994 World Cup, the team led by Carlos Alberto Parreira hadn´t yet secured berth and needed to win over Uruguay with a 2 to 0 to do so. Both goals were scored by Romario. The following year, the same squad sweated to classify but guaranteed a fourth title for the country. As time passed by, Maracana hosted many historical events, making incredible memories for any fan around the country. The stadium underwent many renovations to modernize it. Despite the changes, still has its glamour and beauty, ready to enchant the world during the Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup.

Dos gramados, fica para o agora presidente do Vasco a lembrança dos bons momentos, de atuar diante de mais de 100 mil pessoas e ter uma das mais saudáveis rivalidades do futebol brasileiro. Dinamite e Zico jamais precisaram de polêmicas para alimentar seu duelo. Mas não apenas craques do futebol carioca ajudaram a construir a mística do Maracanã – o maior jogador da história deu seus primeiros passos com a Seleção Brasileira no estádio. The Botafoguense Mané Garrincha enchanted crowds with his dribbles, earning three Carioca Championships wearing the black-and-white shirt (Botafogo club). With his bowed legs, the right wing went against the Football predictability, transforming the sport into an art form—in the 1957 Carioca final, Mané dismantled Fluminense´s defense, scoring a goal and contributing to the other five. All done so by Paulinho Valentim, with the score of 6 to 2. For many, Garrincha was the “players’ Maracana”, a synonym of the Brazilian sport happiness. The relationship of the former player with Maracana is so tight that when the stadium went through demolitions due to the World Cup, he confessed to be sad. Cruzmaltino´s player, Roberto Dinamite, comes in the second position, having played in the Maracana since his youth. His nickname came from within the stadium, after scoring a goal from very afar — “Dynamite Boy exploded”, stated a headline in the newspaper “Jornal dos Sports”. The now president of Vasco cherishes the memories of the good times, when he played in front of 100,000 people and had some of the healthiest form of rivalries in Brazilian sports. Dinamite and Zico never needed any sort of controversy to steam their competition.

Encouraged by 81,649 cheering fans, the team – managed by Coach Flavio Costa – defeated its opponent by 4 goals to none. On the following day, England debuted in a World Cup inside the Maracana Stadium. They were up against Chile, with the support of 29,703 spectators. The English Team won the game by 2 goals to 0. The smallest registered attendance came the next day, during the
