n the very first match after Copa America, the Brazilian National Team steps into the field today to face Costa Rica, in an exhibition match validated by Chevrolet Brazilian Global Tour. Red Bull Arena in New Jersey will host the first of two matches the national squad will perform in U.S soil. Next Tuesday, the opponent will be United States Team, in Foxborough. These two matches are prior to Brazil´s endeavor participation in South American Qualifiers for 2018 FIFA World Cup – in October, the team goes to Santiago to face Chile,
and right after, in Fortaleza, will host Venezuela. Coach Dunga´s call-up indicated an interesting mix of young athletes combined with the greatest talented names, together with a share of domestic players – six in total. The key newsflash was the return of the attacking-midfielder Kaká, who hasn´t been called to join the Squad since 2013. According to Coach, the 33 year old Orlando City star will play a leading role among the group. “Kaká is a mind-setter reference. He has experience and maturity to assist us in hard times. He is going

to excel inside and outside of the field”, explained the Brazilian team commander. Comparing the competing group of America Cup there had been ten changes, once assigned by the coach towards the drafted plan upon CBF and other coaches. “We understand we may have an average team age for certain competitions. We have to find a balance to it. Calling up younger players, besides the experienced ones” he pointed out. Among the newcomers there is 22 year old goalkeeper Alisson, besides the full-back Douglas Santos and defender Marquinhos, both
21 years old. “Douglas is a player who is growing a lot. He knows how to tackle and he has a good run towards the attack” explained Dunga. The group rejuvenation is clear when we realize, out of the 24 callup athletes, 11 are at the age of 25 or less. In this group we can find the attacking-midfielder Lucas Lima, one of the highlights of Santos in Brazilian Championship and considered as one of future potential names. “Lucas Lima is very effective. He has a good ball control, skilled in rhythm changing”, said the
coach. In exhibitions on US soil, as well as in the first Qualifying matches, Dunga will have the first impression in order to carve out the team which will reach the World Cup in Russia.

The player needs to be born ready for the Squad, not only in terms of physical but also in psychological part”, said the coach. The skill leadership lies in Neymar. And this is far from being a bad thing to Kaká. For the midfielder, there are no problems in a team to have a player as a reference. “Of course the Squad has to be prepared, to grasp a playing philosophy, a style, an identity, regardless of any player, but Neymar will be a driver, a skilled leader for many years on”, ratified the midfielder, who is also willing to leave his mark on his return. “I believe I can give my share in the short term and this short term will give evidence on what I can do for the Squad in the medium and long term. But I do believe I can really be a taken as a reference for this new generation, to add a great deal when it comes to quality skills, tackles, experience and leadership”, he said.

A Red Bull Arena, em New Jersey, será palco do primeiro dos dois jogos que a equipe nacional fará em solo norte-americano. Na próxima terça-feira, o adversário será a equipe dos Estados Unidos, em Foxborough. As duas partidas antecedem a participação do Brasil nas Eliminatórias Sul-Americanas para a Copa do Mundo FIFA 2018 – em outubro, a equipe vai até Santiago enfrentar o Chile, para depois, em Fortaleza, receber a Venezuela. A convocação feita pelo técnico Dunga mostrou uma interessante mescla de jovens atletas com nomes de maior experiência, além de uma maior participação de jogadores que atuam no futebol brasileiro – seis, no total. A principal novidade foi o retorno do meiaatacante Kaká, que não era chamado para a Seleção desde 2013. Para o treinador, o astro do Orlando City, 33 anos, terá um papel de líder dentro do grupo. “O Kaká é uma referência. Tem experiência e maturidade para nos ajudar em momentos difíceis. Vai fazer um trabalho importante dentro e fora do campo”, explicou o comandante da equipe brasileira. Em relação ao grupo que disputou a Copa América, foram dez mudanças, atribuídas pelo treinador ao planejamento elaborado
junto à CBF e outros técnicos. “Vimos que devemos ter uma média de idade da equipe para determinadas competições. A gente tem que encontrar o equilíbrio. Trazer os jogadores mais jovens, além dos experientes”, complementou. Entre os atletas mais novos estão o goleiro Alisson, de 22 anos, além do lateral Douglas Santos e do zagueiro Marquinhos, ambos com apenas 21 anos. “O Douglas é um jogador que está crescendo muito. Sabe marcar e tem uma boa chegada ao ataque”, justificou Dunga. A juventude do grupo é evidente quando se percebe que, dos 24 atletas chamados, 11 têm 25 anos ou menos. Nesse grupo encontrase o meia-atacante Lucas Lima, destaque do Santos no Campeonato Brasileiro e visto como um nome de grande potencial. “O Lucas Lima é muito efetivo. Tem uma boa condução de bola, troca a velocidade do jogo com capacidade”, afirmou o técnico. Nos amistosos em solo norte-americano, assim como nas primeiras partidas pelas Eliminatórias, Dunga terá a primeira base para dar forma ao grupo que chegará até o Mundial na Rússia. “No futebol, a grande verdade é o campo. Será dada a oportunidades para quem está se destacando e eles vão confirmar se vão continuar ou não na Seleção. A grande chance que cada um vai ter. Já falei várias vezes que o ideal seria um jogador ter quatro, cinco jogos na Seleção, mas não tem como.

O jogador precisa chegar pronto na Seleção, não apenas na parte física, mas na parte psicológica”, disse o técnico. Ramirez believes in shifting the team´s attitude to be necessary for the upcoming results to be positive. Bearing this in mind, he will feature

players like the goalkeeper Keylor Navas (from Real Madrid), one of the greatest names of the country in the 2014 World Cup, and the striker Bryan Ruiz (Sporting Lisbon). Since the outstanding World Cup campaign in Brazil, Costa Rican team could no longer achieve the same results. In 2015, zero wins – the last win came in October 2014 against South Korea. Back ever since, there had been ten games, with six draws and four defeats. In Gold Cup, the team flunked in quarterfinals after losing to Mexico in the overtime – in the group stage there had been three draws against Jamaica, El Salvador and Canada. in 1963, 1969 and 1989, only one rank below after the giants Mexico and United States. In Central American Cup, which surrounds only the continental countries, upon the 13 editions of it, disputed since 1991, there had been eight titles and four vicechampionships. At the World Cup, the country’s history began to be written in 1990 in its first appearance. Drawn in Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland and Sweden, the Costa Ricans were seen as the underdog one, it turned out to move forward to quarterfinals after beating the two European opponents. The team flunked to Czechoslovakia, but left Italy with an honorable 13th place. The second appearance came in 2002 World Cup, again in a group alongside Brazil. There were four points on group stage: victory over China, draw with Turkey and defeat to Brazil. Insufficient results for a spot in the next round. In 2006 it was a campaign to be forgotten: three defeats to Germany, Ecuador and Poland, and the penultimate position in overall. The story would shift completely in 2014. The draw has addressed to Costa Rica an indigestible group: the so-called “group of death”, along with three world champions. But “Los Ticos” took its opponents for granted, defeating Uruguay and Italy and savoring a position in the second round even before facing England. A draw ensured the first position in its group and the match against Greece. On penalties, Costa Rica wrote the charts of history by advancing in the very first time at the quarterfinals. Para isso, os “Ticos” têm um novo técnico: no último dia 18, Óscar Ramírez foi anunciado pela Federação Costa-Riquenha de Futebol como substituto de Paulo César Wanchope, que pediu demissão. “É uma missão difícil, mas temos a capacidade, sabemos do que os jogadores são capazes. Esperamos a união de forças em todos os aspectos”, afirmou Ramírez em sua apresentação. Ramírez manterá uma base semelhante à utilizada por Wanchope, composta em grande parte pelos atletas que se destacaram na Copa do Mundo de 2014,
quando chegaram às quartas de final. “Temos que ser inteligentes, temos jogadores de categoria. Na Copa Centro-Americana, que envolve apenas os países continentais, nas 13 edições, disputadas desde 1991, foram oito títulos e quatro vice-campeonatos. Na Copa do Mundo, a história do país começou a ser escrita em 1990, em sua primeira participação. Sorteada no Grupo C, ao lado de Brasil,
Escócia e Suécia, os costa-riquenhos eram vistos como o grande azarão, mas acabaram avançando às oitavas de final após bater os dois adversários europeus. A equipe caiu diante da Tchecoslováquia, mas saiu da Itália com uma honrosa 13ª colocação. O retorno ao Mundial veio em 2002, novamente em um grupo com o Brasil. Foram quatro pontos somados: vitória sobre a China, empate com a Turquia e derrota para o Brasil. Resultados insuficientes para uma vaga na próxima
fase. Em 2006, campanha para ser esquecida: três derrotas para Alemanha, Equador e Polônia, e a penúltima posição geral. A história mudaria completamente em 2014. it comes to Brazilian National Team to the knowledge of American boundaries, it is almost impossible not to link with the fourth title achievement of 1994 World Cup. In a country which was unraveling his passion for soccer, the team coached by Carlos Alberto Parreira made a contribution to a flawless title, once led by striker Romario and relying on the goalkeeper Taffarel in an inspired phase. As a matter of fact to mention the relationship is to set exactly forty years ago, when United States was evidenced to the greatest player soccer has ever known. In 1975, New York Cosmos signed King Pele, in the very first link between the two countries – one year later it was the turn of Brazilian Squad to set their feet for the first time in the United States to compete in the Bicentennial Tournament in 1976. The opening match against England, took place in Los Angeles, and Roberto Dynamite scored the winning goal. The selection made other three exhibitions, with three wins, one of which against a blended from the local league. The Squad only returned to America in 1990, drawing with Mexico in an exhibition. Two years later, Brazilians took part in the Friendship Cup, a tournament which also involved North Americans

and Mexicans – in both duels, two wins, including a victory by 5-0 over Mexico. In 1993, the US Cup, another series of exhibitions competition in the country in view of World Cup prep-up, held in the following year. A win over the Americans and draws with Germany and England ended the first chapter of the Squad in the US – the 1994 prep-up season. The preparation for the World Cup was held against Honduras (8-2) and El Salvador (4-0), until the day of debut against Russia. After beating Russia and Cameroon and a draw with Sweden, Brazil is ranked as the first of its group, qualifying for the quarterfinals, scheduled in Independence Day. The opponent could not be more symbolic: the hosts, who performed a well-balanced match, only being beat on a Bebeto´s goal in second half. The triumph over the Americans was just another step taken towards achieving the World Cup, with an interregnum of 24 years. After Roberto Baggio kicking out his penalty, Brazil celebrated the sovereignty in the world, while in-house fans also had their reasons to smile – in 1996, MLS (Major League Soccer) was established as the World Cup immediate consequence, and has grown and caught the attention of the whole country ever since. In the meantime, both countries followed their paths, until 2010 where they met again. Soon after the failure of 2010 World Cup, Brazil began its career in New Jersey, upon United States, beating by 2-0. There were thrown six matches in the country in the timeframe until 2014 World Cup against USA, Argentina, Mexico, Colombia, Portugal and Honduras. After the Cup the yellow jersey rose again in US soil in matches against Colombia and Ecuador. Now it´s time for Red Bull Arena to host the match against Costa Rica, validated by Chevrolet Brazil Global Tour, in another step to be taken in view of developing the relationship between the US audience and the Brazilian National Team.

uando se fala sobre a Seleção Brasileira em solo americano, é difícil não associar com a conquista do tetracampeonato na Copa do Mundo de 1994. Em um país que estava descobrindo sua paixão pelo futebol, a equipe treinada por Carlos Alberto Parreira deu sua contribuição em um título impecável, liderado pelo atacante Romário e contando com o goleiro Taffarel em fase inspirada. Mas a relação vem de exatamente quarenta anos atrás, quando os Estados Unidos foram apresentados ao maior jogador que o futebol já conheceu. Em 1975, o New York Cosmos contratou o Rei Pelé, na primeira ligação
entre os dois países – um ano depois, foi a vez da Seleção colocar os pés pela primeira vez nos Estados Unidos, para a disputa do Torneio Bicentenário, em 1976. A partida inaugural, contra a Inglaterra, aconteceu em Los Angeles, e Roberto Dinamite marcou o gol da vitória. A seleção realizou outros três amistosos, obtendo mais três triunfos, um deles contra um combinado da liga local. A Seleção só retornou aos Estados Unidos em 1990, empatando sem gols com o México em amistoso. nited States soccer is becoming stronger as time goes by, with a top notch squad with a worldwide aces-replete National League. In its twentieth season, the Major League Soccer (MLS), gathers teams from USA and Canada, with players like Englishmen Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, the Irish Robbie Keane, the Italian Andrea Pirlo and Brazilian Kaka, Orlando City star. Bearing in mind the current scenario to be a long effort result of a history since the sport was adopted by Americans. From time back in the past, when we analyze the process of professionalization and popularization of soccer, some Brazilians were essential to its consolidation in the country. Even before MLS was created, several Brazilian players ventured themselves in North American continent. One of the first players to compete in a championship in the US was Vava, two times world champion with Brazilian National Team in 1958 and 1962. The Striker defended San Diego Toros during the first season of the National American Soccer League (NASL) in 1967. Due to high overhead costs, the tournament turned out to be unsuccessful. Only in the 70s, with the arrival of new stars of world soccer, the

league started to become popular. In 1975, New York Cosmos leveraged the NASL once and for all. The team hired a Squad indeed. Pele was the main name of US team that still counted on Carlos Alberto Torres and Rildo, besides the German ace Franz Beckenbauer. The Brazilian Nelsi Morais was also part of the cast of 77 champions. Even with timeframe gaps, the league follows its activities flanked by MLS. The Major League Soccer continues with the tactic of enticing soccer stars with million dollar contracts – then attracting players like Lampard and Gerrard, and Kaka himself. Another important name is Freddy Adu, who came to be compared to Pele by the press in the early of his career. The striker was loaned to Bahia in early 2013, but had only a few chances and, to the date, defends Tampa Bay Rowdies from NASL.
