A Stress Free Wedding 6 easy steps to making your day a little less stressful

1. stay organized Be sure to stay organized. Checklists are a great way to make this happen. Use the planner in the back of Premier Bride to keep you on schedule, or download timelines, checklists, and budgets from pbidaho.com. These are wonderful worksheets to help your process run a lot smoother.

2. be the bride You have one task the day of your wedding and that is to be a beautiful, happy bride. Remember you hired your vendors for a reason. They know what they are doing so let them do their job. You can be sure to tell them anything you are wanting before the wedding but when that day arrives let them do what they do best.

3. have a simple rehearsal dinner Remember the big party is going to happen the next day. For the Rehearsal Dinner hand over the reins to your fiancee and let him create a comfortable, simple night for you and your guests. Simple things like barbecue and a backyard picnic are great ideas for a rehearsal dinner. Also, be sure you don't stay out too late. You have a big day ahead of you and the last thing you need is to be tired the next day.

4. decisions for the day Find someone who is not in the wedding but really wants to help you on your wedding day. Be sure it is someone you trust and let them deal with all the little things the day of the wedding. They can answer any calls that come your way and deal with making sure everyone knows where to go.

5. don't forget to eat! The worst thing you can do on your wedding day is not eat. It is a long day and you need to be sure you can keep up. Eat a good breakfast and be sure to have lots of snack foods around all day. Also, remember that by this point you aren't going to be able to change how you look in your dress so eat up!

6. stay relaxed Be sure you are enjoying this time and don't forget to think about yourself. It should not be a stressful time in your life. Don't stop doing your everyday things like hanging out with your friends and doing yoga. You can even schedule a few extra things in your schedule like taking a day off work to just relax or scheduling a spa day for you and some of your friends.

Privacy & Entertainment Issues If your venue does multiple events, find out if there are other bookings at the same time or on the same day as yours. If so, ensure that there will be adequate privacy and separation for your party. There should also be ample time in between events to allow your caterer or other service people to set up or break down your party. Whether you intend to have a DJ or a band, enquire about any possible restrictions regarding the type, volume or duration of music. Be sure to confirm that there is an adequate power supply for speakers, mixers and amplifiers, or good acoustics for string and wind instruments. Some sites have built-in public-address systems which can be used for introductions and toasts. If your site of choice doesn’t offer this equipment, make sure your DJ or musicians can provide it.

First Impressions Your guests will get their first impression of your reception as they enter the building. But first they have to be able to find it. Clear signage indicating the way to the reception or cocktail area is a must. Whether your party starts with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres outside on the terrace, then moves indoors later on for the meal and dancing, or the entire celebration is held in one room, make sure there is adequate space to receive everyone and to serve your guests while they await your arrival. You don’t want a backlog at the entrance because the doorway is too narrow.

responsible for timing of the cocktail hour, prompting your guests for the meal, cueing the musicians for the first dance, and coordinating with the emcee for the champagne toast, cake cutting, bouquet and garter toss. If this person is affiliated with the facility, make sure you meet them and are comfortable with their style before you book.

Down to Details As you find wedding locations that seem to suit your style, ask vendors about the following policies: catering, alcohol, bad weather, contingency plans, staffing availability, parking, decorating, deposits, refunds and insurance. Make sure you’re comfortable with the answers they give.

As with any event, there should be a designated person to keep the event running on schedule. This key person may be a wedding coordinator, your caterer or the facility manager. They’ll be

Uncomplicated Catering Planning the wedding feast doesn’t have to be complicated. A good caterer will deliver an excellent meal and impeccable service within the specifications of your contract and budget. A professional caterer should share your enthusiasm for pleasing each guest, but unfortunately, that’s not the only qualifier. You’ll want to address budget, service, the meal itself, and a variety of details with your caterer to make sure that the qualifications match the enthusiasm.

Finding Professional Service There is no substitute for professionalism and experience. When selecting your caterer, get sound referrals and observe the professionalism of the staff. Extremely attentive

{ 18 }

service for a sit-down meal or cocktail party would require one server for every 10 guests; for a buffet the number is significantly less. Service is still quite good with one server for every 15 to 20 guests. A good caterer will be able to explain these ratios and make suggestions for the best service style and the appropriate number of servers for your budget.

A Meal to Remember Ah yes, the food. To ensure a quality meal, schedule a meeting with the chef who will prepare it. It is also appropriate to request a private dinner sampling for you and your groom, remembering your enjoyment there will be the measure of your guest’s enjoyment at the wedding reception.

Catering Budget Found a caterer whose food and service you like? Great. Can you afford them? The best way to determine the catering budget is to decide how much you will spend on each guest. Multiply that dollar amount by the number of guests expected. Then add an additional 10 percent to cover overage and approximately 17 to 20 percent for gratuities. Don’t forget to add your local applicable taxes and any extras that aren’t included in the price.

Down to Details Once you’ve decided on a caterer then take the time to determine as many additional details as possible. Have a firm agreement, and thoroughly examine your contract. Make sure it clearly states dates, costs and when deposits are due. Your contract should also specify the food and beverages to be served and stipulate the number of servers needed.

Check to see that all the services you requested are listed in the contract, such as centerpieces, the wedding cake, decorations for the room and head table and other labor intensive additions such as ice sculptures or any other additional needs. Carefully review postpone-ment policies and cancellation policies. If you have any questions or concerns, this is the time to openly discuss them with your caterer. k

Rentals

Chair Covers an ambiance like no other When planning the details of your wedding or reception you should seriously consider chair covers with coordinating ties and accessories. Chair covers not only transform an average folding chair into something elegant that will make a great impression on your guests, but using them as one of your main decor items can save you money and effort. Covers and ties come in a rainbow of colors and a variety of fabrics from satin and organza to velvet crush. A good rental agent will work with you to personalize the details. Take advantage of their expertise. They will help you determine the best use of chair cover fabrics, colors, and accesories to create the beauty and atmosphere which will make your wedding an affair you and your guests will always remember.

Party Rentals... every last detail Depending on where you choose to hold your reception, you may find yourself in need of certain items not provided by your reception facility. Should this be the case, you will need to enlist the services of a party rental company. The term “party rentals” covers a variety of rental items, including linens, chair covers, tables and chairs, tents, dance floors, fountains, plants, props and theme decorations. If you are holding your reception in a hotel, most of the items listed above may be included in the overall cost. The need for various rental items increases when the event is held outdoors or at an event facility where you are required to provide your own caterer. Before contacting a rental company it is recommended that you have the following information available:

{ 22 }

• Exactly what items are provided by the caterer: glass, flatware, china, buffet linens, and so on. • Any items provided by the facility: tables, chairs, portable bar, and so on. • Your event date, time and location • The number of guests attending • Any special requirements or themes Find out in advance what the delivery, setup, pick-up and payment policies are. Be sure to coordinate with the facility manager to ensure the location will open when your rental company drops off your order. From the proper tent size for an outdoor wedding, to the portable dance floor complete with tables and chairs, a good rental company will work closely with you to determine exactly what and how many rental items will be needed to make your guests comfortable and your special occasion a complete success.

Photo Booths

Photo Booths capturing emotions of your guests A wedding is just one day, so everyone knows photos are a great way of capturing the excitement and emotion for years to come. The professional photographer usually does a great job of snapping the couple, but pics of your friends and family members celebrating with you will be great mementos going forward. A fun, plucky alternative can be to get a photo booth. Photo booth rentals are becoming popular at wedding receptions –not only do you get too see everyone in their finest for your big day, but they can take home a quality memory from the wedding. Photo booth rentals are different in size and output. Some give guests prints of their pictures right away, in the traditional photo booth setting, with the four black and white prints on one single strand. This is a great way to give guests a souvenir right away, especially because it’s a unique type of print. Other photo booths just continuously shoot throughout the night, and provide the couple with a digital record of all the shots taken. Then, guests could go to an online database to choose which photos they want and print them at their own convenience. The newest innovation in photo booths is a flip book, which is more interactive and

involves a true keepsake for everyone. With a flip book, a representative from the company is on hand, acting as kind of a mini-director encouraging guests to perform skits or don playful costumes. At the end, it’s put together into a video and everyone receives a copy. One fun way to really spice up the photos is to supply props like goofy hats, accessories, or fake mustaches for guests to poke around with. A chalkboard or dry erase board is also fun, so family and friends can doodle a special message or sentiment and capture it on film. A giant, decorative frame is another fun prop to create the picture-within-apicture look. When deciding on a rental, choose one where you can really customize it, if you’d like. You could ask for the background to be matching the colors of the wedding, or add your names or the date to a sign at the top of the photo. But no matter how basic it is, your family and loved ones smiling faces will make it a truly personal memory!

Cake What first? Think about the rest of your wedding. Your dessert should match your day, so take everything into account. If you have a paisley themed wedding at an indoor reception venue, a large tiered cake with paisley fondant would make a beautiful room centerpiece. If your day is going to be more princess pink, maybe you’ve considered a cupcake castle tower. A casual outdoor wedding is the perfect venue for a table of tasty and colorful candies or make-your-own ice cream sundaes. Did you meet at a baseball game? Order up a baseball stadiumshaped cake, complete with you two lovebirds in the stands! Do you share an interest such as running? Ask around for bakers who could make a replica cake of your running shoes tied together at the laces. Wedding cakes and desserts are one of the latest wedding designs to start challenging convention, so bakeries are always looking to keep up with the latest trends and really customize your dessert. So, if you have a sweet idea, find someone who can work with it. Book Early! Demand for customized and intricate wedding desserts mean bakeries fill up quick for wedding weekends. It`s safe to have something booked six months in advance, especially if you`re getting married during high season. But don`t worry – this doesn`t mean you have to know exactly what you want so far ahead of time. First, shop around in general for bakeries, and when you find one you think can satisfy your needs for taste, quantity, efficiency and personality, book a date. Then, you can really work with a pro to determine exactly what it is you want. So‌how do I find the bakery? Trusting your gut is always sound advice, especially so when it comes to a food decision! Any dessert

should be delicious, so your tasting is important. Make sure you sample all they have to offer that interests you. But since this isn`t an ordinary dessert you`re ordering, make sure you’re comfortable with the efficiency and professionalism of the bakery as well. They should return your calls and emails on time, be flexible with you and your needs, be willing to customize your dessert, be familiar with your reception venue and guarantee an on-time dessert, including of course set-up, delivery, and clean-up if necessary. You don’t want to be worrying about if your cake is going to show up on your big day. As with every wedding decision you make, don`t be afraid to switch bakeries or make demands if you don`t feel comfortable with the service you´re receiving. And the cost… Cakes are typically priced by the slice, which is generally anywhere from $1.50 to $6.50 per slice, depending on the style, ingredients, size and decorating. Your reception site or caterer may also charge a plating fee as well, often $.50 to $1.50 per

person, to cut and serve the cake. Ask about this, and if there is a plating charge see if it’s negotiable. Cutting the Cake. Most likely your baker will provide tips for you and your new spouse to accomplish the time-honored task of cutting the cake with ease. Plan ahead to have your cake knife and lifter engraved or decorated with ribbons or fresh flowers. Traditionally, the bride grasps the knife with her right hand and the groom covers her hand with his. Together, the couple glides the knife into the delicious masterpiece while flashbulbs pop. Anniversary cakes. Some bakeries offer ‘anniversary cakes’ as part of their bridal packages. Instead of having to freeze the top layer of your wedding cake (which doesn’t always freeze well, or taste that great a year later), the bakery will make you a fresh cake, often in the same style and flavor as your wedding cake, for your one-year anniversary. Centerpiece cakes. Pull double duty and use a beautiful wedding cake as the centerpiece for each of your tables. Some ambitious newlyweds stop at each table to cut and serve their guests the cake, which is a beautiful idea, but depending on the timetable and the number of tables this won’t work for everyone. Cupcake Tower. Individual cupcakes are fun, the perfect serving size and allow for all kinds of decorating freedom you might not have with a traditional cake. Cupcake arrangements could be anything from a tower that resembles a traditional tiered cake to something more inventive such as mismatched layers of different colored cupcakes over decorated shelves. Make-Your-Own-Sundae! Who doesn´t love an ice cream sundae? Think of every topping you can, and then some, then let your guests run wild. Perfect for an outdoor summer wedding or one with lots of children, your guests will be craving this at every wedding they attend after yours. The makeyour-own theme can also be popular with the cupcakes, if you provide a few types of frostings and toppings.

The Gown

6 easy steps to the gown of your dreams

Ahhhh… The Dress. Your wedding gown is probably the most expensive, most scrutinized, most photographed piece of clothing you’ll ever buy. No pressure, right? For many women, shopping for their wedding dress is the highlight of the wedding planning experience, but for some, it can be quite stressful. In the succinct words of one harried bride, “no one tells you how stressful dress shopping can be!” Hopefully the tips shared here will help you have a pleasurable shopping experience. One: Shop early. Ideally, start 8-12 months before the wedding. If you have less time than this, that’s fine too, but starting as early as possible will make the whole experience less stressful and pressured. Also, in the unlikely event that a problem arises, you will have more time to solve it. Another tip about when to shop: bridal salons are busiest from January through April, and Saturday is their busiest day. If it’s possible for you to shop on a weekday, you’ll probably find it to be a more leisurely, relaxing experience. Be sure to make an appointment, if required, to ensure one-on-one service while you’re there. Two: Expect great service. Most negative experiences revolve around service. If you’re not happy with the service you’re getting, move on. Also, your idea of great service may be quite different from another bride’s idea. Two brides-to-be had very different reactions to the same bridal salon: one loved the attentive, very involved service, and the other felt it was too confining and restrictive. So it’s not always about good versus bad service, but also about the type of service with which YOU are most comfortable. Three: Remain open-minded. In one survey, 40% of brides indicated that they ended up with a dress style completely different than what they had planned on buying. It is so important to try on a variety of dress styles, to see how they look on your body type, and to see how you feel in each of them. Be openminded to the suggestions of your sales consultant – they have a lot of experience to offer! Also, a number of brides have found that when they saw the dress on the hanger, they didn’t care for it, but once they tried it on, it was “The Dress.”

www.PremierBrideIdaho.com

{ 31 }

Bridal Gowns Four: Be clear about your budget. Save yourself time and heartache, and be upfront about what your budget is – not only with yourself, but also with your sales consultant. How stressful to find a dress you love, and discover it’s hundreds of dollars more than you planned to spend. Whatever your budget is, if you keep looking you WILL find a dress you love within it. And don’t forget about accessories and alterations! These two items can add up to a big part of your wedding attire budget. Five: Bring one or two supportive people with you. A large group of differing opinions can be overwhelming, so it’s best to keep the entourage to a minimum. On the other hand, having a couple supportive, helpful people with you can provide valuable feedback and suggestions. Do whatever works for you, and what feels most comfortable.

{ 32 }

Six: Get every detail in writing. Don’t leave the salon without a piece of paper that outlines every single detail, including the color, size, and style ordered, the deposit paid, and the estimated date of arrival. Two to three weeks after you order your dress, call the salon and verify that your dress was ordered, and that the estimated date of arrival has not changed. The bottom line is, if you’re having a stressful time shopping for your wedding dress, stop what you’re currently doing and make changes: visit a different salon, try a different time of the week, or bring different people with you. Or, just take a breather from shopping for a while! And remember, finding your dress is like finding your soul mate: sometimes they reveal themselves to us quickly and easily, sometimes they are more challenging to find, but we always find them in the end, and it’s always worth the wait.

A bride by any other name

UPDATING YOUR IDENTITY Nowadays, many modern brides are choosing to retain their maiden name. Some choose the addition of the groom’s last name and a hyphen, but this can be unwieldy. The movement back toward tradition has more brides than ever taking on their husband’s names. Legal wrangles can be minimized by quickly tending to the paperwork.

Sweep Her Off Her Feet... And Carry Her Over The Threshold! It has been tradition over the ages for the groom to carry his bride over the threshold of their new home for the first time as a married couple. Today the gesture is encapsuled with love and romance. The bride being swept off her feet by the man that she loves, held

securely in his strong arms, gazing eye to eye as he gallantly carries her over the threshold of the house in which they will now begin to build a home together, is one of the most romantic moments shared between the two on their wedding day. In Ancient times, when homes had mud floors, straw (thresh) was laid down. To contain the thresh inside the

home, a piece of wood was put in the doorway, hence, the threshold. It was considered "bad luck" and the marriage would fail if the bride should trip over the threshold, therefore she must be carried. They believed demons hovered by the door trying to cause the bride to trip. Carrying the bride would deliver her from the evil spirits. In early Medieval times, the groom would carry the bride over the threshold heading directly for the marriage bed. Some of the guests would witness the consummation of the marriage carrying out the garter belt from the bride as proof to the remaining guests. Today the groom simply removes the garter belt from his bride tossing it to eligible bachelors deemed next to be wed. In Roman times, it was lady-like for a bride to be most modest, behaving reluctant to give up her virginity. Therefore, she was carried over the threshold so she wouldn't run away. In times of "Marriage by Capture" the bride was certainly reluctant to go peacefully through the door of the home or castle. Therefore, she was dragged or carried across the threshold, perhaps kicking and screaming. The groom conquering his new mate. Wherever the tradition originated, brides and grooms of the present, certainly enjoy acting out this romantic tradition still today. Making it one of the most memorable moments to be cherished for times to come.

What About Your Castle? Prince charming sweeps the beautiful princess off her feet, riding off into the sunset on his white horse to the drawbridge of his castle. The dream come true! Now, let's see... the castle? Yes! The castle! Carrying her over the threshold is still a strong, romantic tradition today.

With today's economy, owning a home may feel out of reach to some and even feel impossible to others, but the truth of the matter is that this is the very BEST time to buy a home. With low interest rates, house prices at an all time low, and all the helpful loan and down payment assistance programs available, most couples getting married today are able to buy their first home together. To help you, take a look at friends’ wedding albums, surf around professional photographer’s web sites, clip photos from magazines of photography that moves you, and spend some time in photographers’ booths at wedding shows. All of this research will help you zero in on what style of photography you seem drawn to, and ultimately, which one you want to use for your wedding.

HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHER Once you’ve established the style that is best for you, it’s time to find a professional photographer that meets your needs. Start the process by collecting referrals from friends, reviewing helpful resources like Premier Bride, attending bridal shows and surfing the Internet. Create a short list of

potential photographers that specialize in the style you desire, based on their work and your budget, and set up an inperson or phone consultation with them. Your goal at this consultation is to evaluate three main areas: 1. Do you like their work? Be sure to see complete wedding albums along with individual photos, to get the best idea of the end product you can expect to receive. Also, be very sure that you know exactly WHO will be shooting YOUR wedding – and view their work, as some larger studios have more than one photographer. 2. Do your personalities mesh? Of all your wedding vendors, the photographer is the one vendor with whom you will spend a good deal of time on your wedding day. You want to feel comfortable with this person! Even if he or she is a great photographer, if

Photography

your personalities just don’t ‘click’ – you may want to keep looking. 3. Do they fit your budget? It’s so critical to have a budget amount in mind before looking for a photographer, so that you can feel confident that the one you’ve decided on, and love, also meets your financial requirements.

THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF A PHOTOGRAPHY PACKAGE As you’re selecting your photographer, it may help to be aware of the various elements generally included in wedding photography packages. Most photographers also offer these elements ‘a la carte,’ or can create a custom package that specifically meets your needs – so be sure to ask.

Bride & Groom’s Album There are a wide variety of wedding albums available today, and they vary in size, color, material, construction and price. When comparing different photographers’ bride & groom albums, be sure you’re noting the quantity of photos and in what sizes, to make sure you’re comparing “apples to apples.”

Parents’ albums The parents’ albums are smaller versions of the bride & groom album, and have traditionally included about twenty 5x7 photographs. Photos should be carefully selected for each family, to create two (or more) custom family albums.

Extra prints You will probably want to order extra photographs in addition to the main album and parents’ albums, for yourself or your parents to have some framed portraits at home, for members of the wedding party, and for other close

{ 48 }

Photography friends and family members. Don’t underestimate how many prints you will want after the wedding, as this will definitely impact your budget.

Proofs Ask your photographer how many proofs you will get, and in what format. They may be provided as small photos, in digital format, on the Internet, or on contact sheets.

photograph “A bride is beautiful when she can be her authentic self. When she is given the space to honestly and openly express who she truly is and can share that with her groom and others around her, the inner beauty will come pouring out and will be shared on the outside. This requires the bride to open up parts of herself she may not be used to sharing and to trust the photographer to capture those beautiful moments, even if it means doing something unique or different to create something extraordinary.”

Greg Hoskins Greg Hoskins Photography • 208.724.8023

“The most radiant and stunning photos I get of my brides are when they are relaxed and just enjoying the moment. The most beautiful bride smiles at all the people & activities that surround her and laughs at all the little (or big) mishaps. None of it is worth getting stressed about because today she marries her prince! Let your happiness shine through and remember to slow down and absorb every moment of your day. The beauty that comes from within shines the brightest... even in photographs!”.”

"Women are beautiful and with the right gown, hair and make up they are breathtaking. Add a seasoned photographer to your side on your wedding day you are sure to score high on the photogenic scale. Hiring the right vendors will also allow you to relax and be more comfortable which always makes for better pictures. Ultimately the most beautiful quality in a woman is her gentle and gracious spirit which is my joy to capture and preserve throughout the wedding day."

“What Makes a Beautiful Bride?”

“The most beautiful bride is one that is pure of heart. Who loves being surrounded by her friends and family, sharing the most important day of her life, the magical day she had dreamed about for as long as she can remember. She possesses a fun, friendly personality - the type that everyone loves while being calm, cool, and collected.”

Jacqueline Toy Always Charmed Photography • 208.514.8936

“Her spunk, her personality, her smile and the love she shows toward everyone else on her big day. It’s a once in a lifetime moment that I’m lucky to capture. She gushes and has a glow about her that’s magical. When I work with a bride, I tell her just to have fun, take it all in and relish in the moment because it’s all about her.”

Frances Corkill Two Photography • 208.319.6634

"Our advice for the best wedding photos is to get to know your photographers. The more comfortable you feel with your professionals, the more relaxed and natural you will appear. The joy and excitement of a wedding day gives every bride a happy glow. But those that take the time to enjoy their new spouse, focus on the love they are feeling and take in the details always appear particularly beautiful."

A beautiful bride is defined by the joy in her heart. She walks down the aisle like a happy child cloaked in a glow of eye-catching, dazzling warmth. The breath-taking excitement of the moment radiates from every cell in her body. She is flushed with excitement and is confidently and truly in love, mesmerizing all that see her.

Allan Ansell Allan R. Ansell Photography • 208.863.2808

"The most beautiful brides seem to be celebrating both their love for family and friends and acknowledging all the special people in their lives who have been a part of bringing them along to this fantastic day. The beautiful bride’s stress level is low, focused on enjoying every person at their party This joyful princess steals the show and just too many megs of card space! Her smiles are genuine, her relationships are deep, her love for her new husband is brilliant and all this contributes to a tear-jerking set of wedding pictures!"

Jennifer & Jerry Oates O2 Photography • 208.880.2525

It is very hard not to see a bride as being beautiful on her wedding day. There is much that goes into making a bride beautiful like hair, make up, and a gorgeous wedding dress, but that is all external. For me it is all about the inner beauty that makes a bride beautiful on their once in a lifetime day. This special day is all about love, and with love in the air a bride tends to shine bright and beautiful. I strive to bring that inner beauty out by making the bride relaxed, natural and focused on the love of her soon to be husband.

Ask the Right Questions Your photographer’s personality is as important as their skill – you’ll be spending lots of time with them on your wedding day! • Will you be taking the pictures? If not, can I meet the person who will be taking the pictures? • How long have you been shooting weddings? • What do your photography packages include? • What style of photography do you specialize in? • Have you photographed at my ceremony and reception location before? • How many other weddings do you have on this date? How long can you stay? • Do you offer online ordering for my guests? • When will proofs be ready? How long can we keep them? • Can we purchase negatives or order additional prints later? • What happens if you are sick or have an emergency on my wedding day? • How far in advance must I book your services? • What is your cancellation policy? • Is a deposit required? If so, when and how much?

Being a Gracious Bride... make it a great day for everyone You may have heard the expression “it’s your day, do it your way,” as you’ve been planning your wedding. And this is true! It’s a time to express your true self, be authentic, and drown out the expectations of others. On the other hand, it’s easy to take this concept too far. A recent “Dear Abby” letter described a bride at a wedding who

{ 56 }

preferred to dance on an empty stomach, so she had guests wait five hours for their dinner, and had the dancing first! That’s a great example of taking it too far… Here are a few tips about being a gracious bride: Understand your guests’ perspective. How does the day’s schedule look, from your guests’ viewpoint? Awkward gaps of time between the ceremony and reception are difficult for guests, and asking them to drive more than 30 minutes between locations is usually too much. Try, as much as possible, to craft your day’s schedule with the guests in mind. Jump on those thank you notes. Guests are excited to get you something wonderful in honor of your marriage, and they can’t wait to hear if you not only received it, but liked it! Write a conversational, personalized note and respond as quickly as possible. Give others grace. Just know that weddings are an emotional time for your close relatives, especially parents, siblings and close friends. In addition to the joy, there can also be this strange sense of “loss,” that they’re losing you, and this can bring up unexpected emotions. As much as possible, when people around you are driving you crazy, give them grace and, maybe, a warm hug. Best wishes to you, gracious bride!

Beauty/Health

Who Wouldn’t Like A Nice Bright, Healthy Smile? A smile is the universal sign of joy and congeniality. When we have teeth that make us self-conscious, it interferes with our desire to smile. There are two answers to this problem: either smile anyway, or repair the smile. While anyone looks better with a smile no matter what the condition of their teeth, it can be much more fun if you are proud of your smile. Veneers are a way to correct crooked, stained or otherwise unsightly teeth. A veneer is a little shell of porcelain that bonds to the front of the tooth. Sometimes simple bonding of a composite tooth-colored filling material can accomplish a limited task. In any case, the smile is improved, and people can change their whole demeanor if they are no longer afraid to smile. Different modifications to porcelain have overcome problems with strength, abrasiveness, accuracy, appearance, etc. Dentists are now successfully restoring

broken-down teeth with all-porcelain crowns and onlays that look indistinguishable from natural teeth and have great longevity. All-porcelain restorations seem to have “cemented” their place in the dentist’s repertoire. One way to brighten your smile inexpensively is to bleach. Most bleaching systems contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide in some concentration. This removes stain from tiny cracks and fissures in the enamel of the tooth. Dentists can prepare a custom bleach tray with a higher concentration of the active ingredient. Finally “in-office bleaching” can be performed by the dentist. This requires isolation of the teeth with a thin sheet of rubber and a high concentration of the peroxide. Often the teeth are sensitive to temperature afterward and the cost is significantly higher. Bleaching provides a safe and fairly simple way of improving the appearance of a smile.

Flowers

Flowers Selecting flowers for your wedding may take considerable time and imagination on your part. Guidance and suggestions from your florist will smooth the process. When meeting with floral designers, it is a good idea to bring fabric swatches of your gown, if possible, and the bridesmaids’ dresses. It also helps to bring photographs or illustrations of specific flowers, colors and bouquet styles you really like. If you are unsure which flowers will last and look the best, ask your floral designer. Some flowers hold up nicely in the sun; others are better suited for indoors. For example, it probably would not be wise to select gardenias if you are planning an outdoor wedding at midday in June. Gardenias are as delicate as they are beautiful, and under such conditions they

{ 58 }

Flowers

would wilt long before the minister says, “you may kiss the bride.” For You and Your Wedding Party The first item of consideration will be the bridal bouquet, since all other floral arrangements will take their cue from this piece. It not only sets the tone for the overall floral scheme but also provides the perfect opportunity for you to bring your own style and personality to the forefront. The Ceremony If you’re on a budget, it’s useful to reuse ceremony flowers at the reception site. Ceremony arrange-ments are usually ideal for buffet, gift and head tables if using them twice is an option. Reception Arrangements There is a vast array of options for reception centerpieces: elegant vases filled with cut flowers; towering candelabras; topiaries; or simple rose petals scattered around flickering candles. Use your imagination to design one-of-a-kind centerpieces that express your style. Keep in mind that the height of the arrangements should not interfere with the ability of guests to converse with each other. They should either be low enough to talk over or high enough to talk under. Placing the wedding party’s bouquets at equal intervals at the head table also provides excellent decoration. Share your ideas with your floral designer, who can help you refine them to create a memorable impression that won’t soon be forgotten by you or your guests.

Entertainment

Find Out Why

DJ’s ROCK! Getting married is hard work. All that intricate planning and coordinating is very demanding and of course you'll want to take your wedding day off. That alone is the most compelling reason to hire a master of ceremonies. Brides traditionally engage DJs to emcee their wedding reception while also providing a wide variety of music at the same time. But even if you book the Rolling Stones, they may not know New York, New York. A less obvious benefit of hiring an emcee is the personal touch he will impart to duties you won't have to deal with. A veteran wedding DJ will smoothly line up your wedding party and introduce them. He'll arrange to have champagne poured before the toast and keep a jittery best man on an even and eloquent keel. He'll emcee your cake-cutting and bouquet-throwing at the appropriate times. In short, he'll keep the show running smoothly while you're basking in the spotlight. The key qualification is experience, not price. Most DJs cost less than the hors d’oeuvres, though they're remembered far longer. It's not out of line to ask for references, though, he'll certainly select satisfied clients. The best idea is to arrange a meeting. Talk your DJ through his conception of your reception and see how your ideas mesh. Ask about musical selections, old and new. Don't be dismayed if he doesn't have obscure songs, but gauge his willingness to track them down. Ask about lights and sound (the best systems sound superb at background volume). Most importantly, will he be a lump behind the turntables? Or will he be out front working hard, involving your guests in dancing after dinner?

Idaho Marriage Laws Marriage licenses must be obtained in person at the new Ada County Courthouse Recorder’s Department on the first floor. Both parties must appear together in person. There is a $28 fee. An additional $2 fee is required if you want a certified copy of your marriage license for proof of name change. Only cash is acceptable. There is no waiting period and no blood test is required, however, Idaho Code requires both parties to read and sign a premarital AIDS educational pamphlet (available at the counter). If you are 18 years or older, you are required to provide proof of your identity and your age, if you are under 18 of age contact the recorders office for additional requirements. Assist groom with wedding details such as accommodations for out-oftown groomsmen and ushers. See that the groom is properly attired and at the church or synagogue on time. Tie bow ties, provide stiff drinks if applicable or allowed and otherwise support the to-be-wed. Give the minister or officiant a sealed envelope with payment (from the groom) immediately following the ceremony.

lining up the

wedding party You’ll find traditional configurations for Christian and Jewish wedding parties illustrated and labeled below. The bride meets the groom at the altar to initiate a Christian wedding, while her parents remain seated throughout the service. A Jewish bride is escorted down the aisle by her parents, who then remain standing.

Sign the marriage license as a witness. Hold the bride’s ring during the ceremony. Coordinate the ushers and make sure they are properly dressed and know how to seat the guests. Sits to the bride’s right at the reception, providing charming conversation throughout. May dance with the maid/matron of honor during the first dance. Propose the first toast to the newlyweds. Hold luggage under lock and key until the bride and groom depart. Help the groom change into going away attire. Escort the bride and groom to their limousine or drive them to the hotel or airport. Return all formal wear rentals on time, and to the correct formal wear shop— not the one three blocks away from the one you really rented them from. Assist maid of honor in transporting gifts to the bride and groom’s home.

Know your overall budget BEFORE you start planning your wedding - it’s one of the first issues you and your fiancé should discuss. Set your priorities based on what is most important to both of you and spend accordingly. For example, if the meal is the most important element of your wedding, you’ll want to allocate a greater portion of your budget to it.

It is no longer expected that wedding costs will be assigned according to tradition. Discuss your plan and budget with your families to determine whether to follow a traditional division of financial responsibility for the wedding costs. If circumstances don't allow the families to follow tradition, the proper rationale in deciding who pays for what portion is basic: whoever is most willing and most able to pay for a wedding expense assumes responsibility for that expense.

Planning your

destination wedding or honeymoon has never been so easy! A warm, sunny beach… A villa in Italy… A chalet in the Rocky Mountains… Finding the perfect location is the first step and where better to start than

Domestic, tropical and international s locations, travel tip and more!

international

Paris Story By Rachael Dragani

Bonjour! Bienvenue à Paris. What’s there to argue against a honeymoon in the world’s most romantic city? It’s images are iconic, but always associated with love - fireworks bursting above star-gazing young couples under the Eiffel Tower, lovebirds kissing upon returning from war, hands held through the twisting cobblestone lanes, and of course that breathy, passionate, ‘j’adore’ No other ‘I love you’ can compare. 4

In fact, the destination may seem to cliché, too straight out of a romantic comedy. If that’s the case, avoid the touristy clumps and cheesy tours, take a bit of a baguette and honeymoon in epicenter of business, fashion, culture and entertainment.

Lay of the Land Paris is located on the Seine River and is quite different at various geographic points throughout the city. Since the city lays on water and was engaged in power struggles and battles throughout Europe’s tumultuous history, many of the bridges that connect the city have fascinating stories. At the very least, ruins of collapsed bridges or crumbled protective walls means a history lesson is around every corner. The Ile de la Cite, an island in the The Infamous Moulin Rouge

center of Paris, is connected by multiple bridges to the rest of the city and houses old-world architecture wonders like the famous Notre-Dame cathedral.

Things to Do Iconic Images We’ve grown up being able to spot the cultural and artistic wonders found in France – it will be a treat to see them in real life. But don’t just pass by and snap a picture – learn the history or spend an afternoon in the company of true beauty. Stop at a grocery store to get some bread, cheese and wine to leisurely enjoy a picnic lunch and watch the sun set in the grassy gardens surrounding the Eiffel Tower.

Hotel Plaza Athenee Eiffle Suite

Hotel Plaza Athenee

The Mona Lisa and the outside of its home, The Louvre, are visitor hotspots, but take a second to get to know the history of some of the rest of the artwork housed in the triangular walls, or pop down on a bench and people-watch the thousands of art-loving visitors. Wonder about the decades of craftsmen and laborers who put their sweat into building the Notre-Dame Cathedral Take a stroll through the posh, historic streets near St-Germain-des-Pres and pop into a bookstore along the way.

Take in the Music

Hotel Plaza Athenee Ice Skating Rank

Paris has centuries of experience with entertainment. The jazz scene is alive and well, so ask around while you’re there for the best place to catch a live show. One traditional place, the Caveau de la Huchette is tucked in a medieval cellar, and the Au Duc des Lombards has been frequented by all the greats. If cabaret is your thing, you’ve come to the right place, and if you think it isn’t, then you haven’t seen a Parisian show. For all the tacky, glitzy, flamboyant madness that will remind you of a vintage Toulouse-Lautrec poster, head to the infamous Moulin Rouge or Le Lido.

Shop!

Le Bar in Hotel Plaza Athenee

Who can come to Paris and resist the shopping scene? It’s the fashion capital of the world, and the designer boutiques and effortless style bursting out of every passerby will be a constant reminder of that. But a honeymoon in Paris doesn’t have to mean dragging your significant other around to find the perfect Louis Vuitton bag – Parisian shops truly have something for everyone. For couples that share a love of reading, check out the cafes and bookshops where lonely, exiled American writers from the early 1900s called home. The presentation is half the fun, so spend a day winding in and out of avant-garde shops

Hotel Du Petit Moulin

like L’Eclaireur or home stores like Merci. For a peek at anything and everything, pop into one of Paris’s flea markets like the Marche aux Puces de Clignacourt or Marche d’Aligre.

WHERE TO STAY Hotel du Petit Moulin www.paris-hotel-petitmoulin.com Unconventional, wacky and yet completely sophisticated and posh, the Hotel du Petit Moulin is consistently ranked among the best honeymoon destinations in the world. Besides offering more than enough modern amenities and a great location, this place will keep you guessing around every corner as antique chandeliers are partnered with heart-shaped mirrors on a bright red wall – somehow in a way that just works. Make sure to book way ahead of time.

Hotel Langlois

Hotel Plaza Athenee www.plaza-athenee-paris.com For typical Parisian luxury and the obligatory view of the Eiffel Tower, go no further than Hotel Plaza Athenee. You’ll get the old world charm and glamor without having to compromise on modern technology or amenities.

Hotel Langlois www.hotel-langlois.com/

Hotel Plaza Athenee

An affordable yet pristine option, the Hotel Langlois is in a perfect location near restaurants and public transportation and is a comfortable spot to drop after a day of sightseeing and Parisian revelry.

Climate

fact sheet

Paris is a temperate climate, with four seasons but usually not extreme weather in any of them. It doesn’t typically drop below 40 degrees in the winter and won’t get much hotter than 80 in the summer, but if you’re in the middle of a summer heat wave head to the suburbs or hilly areas around the city.

Getting Around

Paris is full of visitors from around the world, so it’s fairly easy to navigate the city – or find someone to help navigate – by taking a cab or public transportation. Driving or walking on your own might be more difficult, with twisting and turning streets and a lack of clear signage. Make sure to have a map with you and brush up on your French directions. Ask if the hotel you’re staying at has driver services or tips on getting to and from places near your accommodations.

Time Zone

Paris is in CEST, six hours ahead of New York.

Language

Parisians speak French and aren’t always as stereotypically snobby about the language as they are made out to be, but if you don’t speak French, try to learn some phrases before you go and bring along a phrase book – any effort to adapt to the language gains a few traveler points.

TThe Home of Mona Lisa, The Louvre

Electricity

France operates on 220v and 50 Hz, so if you’re bringing North American-made electronics you’ll need an adaptor.

Currency

Frances uses the Euro. Check exchange rates before you go so you don’t get ripped off at an airport or currency exchange. Most touristy places or upscale hotels take commonly accepted credit cards, but it’s smart to always have cash euros on you because debit and credit machines are less common than in the States.

Marriage Requirements

A civil marriage in France is recognized as valid in the U.S., but it isn’t as easy to obtain as some countries. The marriage must be performed by a French civil authority before any religious ceremony. It’s a general rule that one party must have resided in France for 40 days continuously before the marriage, but that sometimes isn’t enforced. Similarly, the documents officials ask for vary, but you should be prepared with valid passports, certified birth certificate, and most Americans need to provide an affidavit of marital status to prove they’re not married. This can be obtained from the American consulate in France. If you’re planning a destination wedding, check around at different hotels and resorts to find one with a wedding planner that can help you sort through the red tape.

domestic

Outer Banks North Carolina North Carolina’s Outer Banks is a land of firsts – here the Wright brothers took their first flight and here is the birthplace of the first person of English descent to have been born on American soil. So why not make your first trip as a married couple to this crawling expanse of sun-kissed islands? Steep yourselves in the history of the area, full of fascinating tales from the birth of the nation, take a hike through the marshy ecosystems crawling with unique wildlife or just relax on the sunny coast. A honeymoon may be your first trip together to the Outer Banks, and you won’t want it to be your last. 4

Lay of the Land The Outer Banks are usually divided into three areas. First, the Northern Beaches, which include Duck, Kitty Hawk and Nags Head. There’s also Hatteras Island, which consists of Rodanthe, Waves, Avon, Buxton, Salvo, Frisco and Hatteras, and Roanoke Island, broken into Manteo and Wanchese. Each destination offers a little different experience. For instance, Manteo is known for its small, charming streets lined with Bed and Breakfast getaways, Kitty Hawk has more of a residential feel basked in the history of the Wright Brothers, Duck has popular resorts and tons of water sports and Nags Head is laid back with a touch of romanticized glory from the pirate, losttreasure days the islands saw years ago. Most travelers have a ‘home base,’ where

Old Pier at Dusk

they stay, and then drive or hop on a ferry to jet around to the different small towns around the island.

Things to Do Historical Tours The Outer Banks hold a special location in American history. Their costal, Southern geographical spot means they were the home of Native American cultures, some Europeans first descent on the continent, a settling ground for early citizens, a battleground between the North and the South during the Civil War and the birthplace of aviation. Take some time to walk or ride along the Dare County Civil War Heritage Trail to learn about the Battle of Roanoke Island and the role the Carolinas

Outer banks, North Carolina

played in the Civil War. Aviation buffs can visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial, which is the true site of the first successful powered flight, and has a Visitors Center with fascinating artifacts. To combine theater and history, have a romantic picnic dinner then head to the outdoor performance of the Pulitzer Prize winning play The Lost Colony to see the riveting unsolved mystery of over 400 disappeared English settlers.

Luxury Beach houses

Water Activities Since the Outer Banks is made up of islands, there are plenty of spots for lazy beach days and a dip in the exciting Atlantic, especially on Cape Hatteras. But the water is lively and teeming with life, so there’s plenty to do besides sunbathing! Fishing and crabbing are a fun and tasty way to earn your dinner, and every water sport such as wakeboarding, waterskiing, windsurfing, sailing, stand-up paddling and waterfowling are available in the Banks. Divers can have extra fun plunging to the depths of sunken ships. For a coastal adventure unlike most islands, visit the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and hear the tales of the shipwrecks and lost sailors that haunt the islands.

Venture into Wildlife The water isn’t the only thing teeming with life in the Outer Banks. The swampy, coastal ecosystems make this the perfect spot for nature-loving newlyweds. The Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge and the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge are the homes to migrating ducks, swans, sea turtles, deer, black bear, alligators and even whales or dolphins have been spotted. Take a hike through the wildlife paradise or pack a picnic lunch to eat with a choir of several bird species.

The Inn On Pamlico, Buxton NC

Where to Stay

White Doe Inn, Manteo NC Photo by Jumping Rocks Media

Before you go, read a little about all the small towns that make up the Outer Banks, since each one has a little different feel. Duck, Manteo and Buxton are especially popular among honeymooners. After you decide where you want to be situated, decide what kind of accommodation you’d like. The islands are full of small, charming bed and breakfasts that are peaceful and cozy, or maybe you’d like a more upscale resort that has access to tours and water sports.

The Inn on Pamlico Sound www.innonpamlicosound.com/ Buxton is a bustling village near the heart of the Outer Banks, and this Inn manages to offer modern, luxurious amenities such as spa services, fine catered dining right on the waterfront and Internet while still maintaining a serene, isolated feel. White Doe Inn, Manteo NC Photo by Jumping Rocks Media

The Sanderling, Duck www.thesanderling.com For an upscale and pampered honeymoon, head to The Sanderling in Duck. Spacious, elegant rooms line the halls, most overlooking the Banks coastline. The Sanderling offers custom spa treatments, tours and reservations with wildlife and water sports companies and fine dining and drinking options around every corner.

White Doe Inn, Manteo www.whitedoeinn.com White Doe Inn, Manteo NC Photo by Jumping Rocks Media

Manteo is home to the most quaint bed and breakfasts in the Outer Banks, and the White Doe Inn is one of those. Specially catered towards honeymooners or romantic getaways, every second in these sunny, sophisticated rooms will be a reminder of why you’re on vacation. Special celebration packages, indulgences and spa services are the pride and joy of the Inn.

Climate

fact sheet

The Outer Banks are most agreeable for fall or spring honeymoons and weddings. Winters there are much warmer than in the northern States, with average temperatures in the 40s or 50s, but the area isn’t immune to a random ice storm, flooding or freezing rain. If you’re heading here in the summer, the area is much less humid and more prone to pleasant warm weather than the rest of the state.

Getting Around

If you don’t want to stay glued to one spot for your entire vacation, a rental car or other form of transportation is very helpful for getting from place to place around the Banks. For island hopping, ferries are plentiful and affordable. Get the most up-to-date schedules here: www.ncdot.org/transit/ferry.

The Sanderling

Time Zone

The Outer Banks are located in the Eastern Time Zone.

Marriage Requirements

The Outer Banks is becoming a popular domestic destination wedding site, so the area is well prepared for administrative and wedding needs. In fact, there is an Outer Banks Wedding Association that holds an expo in January where couples, if it’s possible to travel there, can get info from the hundreds of vendors ready to execute the perfect wedding. More information, and a list of wedding consultants for couples who are not in the area and could use local expertise in planning the wedding, can be found at www.outerbanksweddingassoc.org.

tropical

Barbados It’s funky. It’s plush. It’s sultry. It’s got heart. And it’s exactly the spot a first-class couple looking for a colorful honeymoon should pick. This Caribbean destination has flavor on top of its white beaches, brilliant botanical gardens, and jagged limestone cliffs. A favorite of posh celebrities and seasoned travel bums alike, this rollicking nation is teeming with laid-back extravagance in the way only an island hideaway can. Barbados also boasts a 98% literacy rate and an economically booming capital and surrounding region, including museums carefully documenting the island’s brutal colonial past - all reasons it was named one of the world’s top ten ethical travel destinations. When you settle in here, groove to the calypso rhythms, dig your toes into the white sand, and toast a glass of world-famous rum to a perfect first adventure as a married couple. 4

Lay of the Land One of the beauties of Barbados is its diverse terrain. The white-sand beaches of the West and South coasts are home to some of the most tranquil and posh all-inclusive resorts and spas. If you’re looking for calm, clear waters and gently blowing palms, this area will be your paradise. The Atlantic side, on the East, packs a little more action. The wild waves are a huge draw for some of the world’s best surfers, and couples looking to participate in water sports such as diving and windsurfing should stick to this side. One thing that separates Barbados from other island nations is its ‘middle.’ Jagged limestone cliffs, breathtaking botanic gardens and colorful rolls of flowered hills make sure the interior of the island has as much to brag about as the coasts. If they all sound appealing, don’t worry - the great thing about Barbados is its size, just about 21 miles long. A terrific bus system, friendly taxis and bike roads make it easy to see if all during your getaway.

Things to Do Botanical Beauty Part of Barbados’ splendor is its stunning natural resources. The island’s interior is full of jagged, limestone cliffs perfect for climbing. Barbados is also home to a tiny rainforest, best viewed at Hunte’s Gardens, easily accessible from anywhere on the islands. A picturesque path through the gardens is the perfect window to exotic floral life and mystical forest clusters. For different types of gardens with a manicured, colonial feel, head to St. Nicholas Abbey. A trip there comes with history and architecture lessons, as well, as you wander through a preserved plantation, well-groomed grounds and a glimpse into how rum and sugar cane are distilled and produced. Barbados is home to stunning scenery and a brutal past, and these excursions won’t let you forget either of those.

Take a Tour Since so much of Barbados’ wonders lie beneath certain surfaces or around unlikely corners, an organized tour is a great way to make sure you get to see it all. Tours are popular all over the island, and the good ones don’t have the same cheesy, touristy feel that you’ll find in other popular destinations. Harrison’s Cave is a breathtaking, mysterious destination that’s best viewed on a tour, and an underwater dive in the Atlantis Submarine Expedition is a carefree way to see every type of marine life and coral you can imagine. As you’re looking into accommodation, ask around for what kind of all-encompassing tours they have a connection to.

Flying Fish and Cutters From the second you touch down in Barbados you’ll know Barbados’ prized animal is the ‘flying fish.’ The birds aren’t

magical creatures – they don’t have wings – but their powerful tailfins allow them to propel out of the water at alarming speeds and heights. They decorate local coins, bills and paraphernalia, but are most popular as a tasty entrée. It’s served lightly breaded and fried with a very spicy yellow mustard sauce with peppers and onions in it. Flying fish are also served in a ‘cutter’ sandwich, another trademark eat in the island. They’re made using a local Salt Bread, much like a roll, and filled with the breaded flying fish or other savory fillings such as ham or thick slices of multiple varieties of cheese, usually topped with a spicy pepper ‘Bajan’ hot sauce. The most famous cutter is the Bread and Two, where two fish cakes are smashed and placed between the cut and bread. Whatever you’re munching on, wash it down with one of the island’s famous rums.

Climate

fact sheet

Barbados is generally anywhere between 75 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit. The sun is almost always shiny, but a breeze keeps it from getting too hot. Dry season is from January to June, but during rainy season the rainfall is usually quick, so it’s still an okay time to travel there.

Language

Because of British occupation, English is the native language, but it’s likely you’ll hear a little ‘Bajan dialect’ spoken amongst locals.

Getting Around

If arriving to Barbados by air, you will almost certainly fly into the Grantley Adams International Airport, about 16 km outside of Bridgetown. From there, arrange transportation to your text destination with your accommodation. Car rentals are possible on the island, but popular retail chains are virtually unheard of and private rentals receive plenty of complaints. It’s much easier to rely on the efficient bus system or taxis throughout Barbados. Or, if you have a few day trips or excursions in mind, talk with your resort ahead of time – they will almost always be happy to arrange something for you. On your way out of the country, be prepared to pay a departure tax at the airport.

Time Zone

Barbados is in the Eastern Time Zone.

Electricity

Electricity is 110 v/50 cycles so if you’re using appliances from North America you shouldn’t have a problem.

Currency

Barbados uses the Barbados Dollar, which is fixed to the U.S. dollar and is about $2 Barbados dollars to $1 US dollar. In the popular tourist areas, though, U.S. dollars are commonly accepted and most major places take credit cards as well. Have a few Barbados dollars on you at all times in case of emergency, but U.S. cash should serve you well, too.

Tipping

Check your bill at restaurants to see if they already added gratuity –if not, 10-15% extra is customary. Don’t be surprised if your accommodation bill includes service charges, and tip the maid an extra dollar or two per day on top of that. If you’re staying at an all-inclusive, check with the hotel’s policy on tipping because some resorts prohibit it.

Marriage Requirements

Barbados is a relatively easy place to get married since there is no required amount of stay and not too much work ahead of time. Both parties involved will have to apply for a license in the capital city, Bridgetown, at the Office of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Make sure you have valid passports or birth certificates and a return ticket. If either party has been widowed or divorced, you’ll need to provide a certified document (such as a death certificate or final judgment) to prove the previous marriage is over. If you are planning a destination wedding, double check with the resort to make sure all your grounds are covered.
