“Jane,
Experts say that 15%-30% of your budget should be spent on floral, so picking the right wedding florist is a must! Imagine this: After countless hours scrolling through social media, endless internet searches, and pinning inspiration photos, you’re ready to find the florist that will turn these dreams into reality, so you send your first email, asking for a consultation, and giving a summary of your needs. You’re the proactive type, so you’ve provided a list of flower varieties you want to include, specified the designs you want recreated from your Pinterest board, the quantities of those designs, as well as the Pantone color numbers the blooms should match. You’re confident the designer is going to be thrilled with how thorough and detailed you have been. Additionally, you already know exactly what you want, which is going to make the consult a quick and easy process for both you, and your soon to be designer. You’re sure of it. A few days later, during your lunch break, you open your email. You feel a rush of excitement as your inbox shows a reply from the florist;
Congratulations on your engagement and upcoming wedding! Thank you for inquiring about our services for such a special and beautiful event. Upon reviewing the information and images provided on your Pinterest board, we feel we may not be the best fit for you. Because flowers are a perishable medium, we cannot guarantee that any specific flower varieties will be used, and also cannot guarantee that the blooms are matched perfectly with the Pantone colors you provided. As creative professionals, we seek to work with clients that love our work and brand. We refrain from recreating other designers work. Having creative freedom in flower choice, and design, while communicating and listening to further ideas, options, and styles with our clients, ensures your wedding flowers are uniquely yours. We recommend focusing on the overall aesthetic and feeling you desire your wedding flowers to invoke. By shifting your focus to this and allowing creative freedom, it will greatly diminish the chance of disappointment that your flowers are not an exact replica of a Pinterest photo. If you are open to discussing some further options for your wedding flowers, and would like to still work with us, we would be happy to schedule a consultation. Sending you congratulations & best wishes! Xx, Florist”
You’re a little shocked at the response. You were aiming to be helpful, as an efficient and organized individual. You’ve been a bride who is on-the-ball, and assumed your details and Pinterest board would be appreciated! Let me give you some insight: Successful florists are only as successful, as their clients are happy. Remember, you’re hiring an artist, not a photocopy. You’re paying for an original, not a duplicate, and you should expect uniqueness, not redundancy. Floral designers are innovative and creative. We live and breathe wedding styles, trends, and aesthetics. While there is always a balance between your desires as a bride, and the florist’s creative freedom, trusting your florist and giving them leeway with the design and floral choices are what ultimately take your wedding from beautiful to breathtaking. Your wedding is YOUR day, not ours. And, that’s why I’m giving you this inside information. You deserve to have your wedding flowers as gorgeous as possible. Would you move into a cookie cutter home, when you have an architect available to customize one for you that fits your needs perfectly, and is beyond what you expected? I didn’t thing so. Don’t be a rerun of the most popular Pinterest photo, be a premier of something better. Here’s how: 1. Ask for Their Opinion | They are in this space of “wedding” ALL THE TIME they have expertise and knowledge that you don’t. You will get an insiders opinion and fresh ideas when you ask for their opinion. 2. Be Open Minded | I know that my clients are not going to go for every idea I throw at them. I do not get offended or pushy when they tell me they don’t agree with certain things, because it’s not my day. When you are open minded in listening to your florist, and the items they would be excited to design, you’re telling them you trust them. Often times clients DO love ideas that I bring to the table because they haven’t been done time and time again, and they didn’t know that it was even an option! 3. Shift your Focus | By focusing on the overall feeling and aesthetic that comes from the flowers, you allow the designer to select product that they know will look the best, and achieve the vision. Flowers don’t always arrive to us looking great, or sometimes they don’t come in at all, this is when substitutions have to be made. We will do our best to incorporate the flower varieties you absolutely love, but guarantees are never made.
4. Find an Expert | Before inquiring with any florist, determine if their overall design style and aesthetic is what you’re wanting in your wedding flowers. If you can find a designer that you already love, then giving them creative freedom will be easy and come natural, because you’re already impressed by, and want the work that they create! Wedding florists are creative minds. We thrive off of being artistic and unique in the industry. We are constantly seeking to stretch the limits of what we can do with flowers. By implementing creative freedom in the relationship with your floral designer, you will see a new energy they bring into your meetings and the designs created that might not have been there otherwise. Your designer will spend the time to ensure that everything is just as it should be when your wedding day comes, because they not only created for you that day, but they created for themselves too. / WEDDING PLANNING /
Congratulations on your engagement, this is such an exciting time for you! After the engagement things can get really overwhelming, there are so many things to do, so much to talk about, and so many decisions to be made. It can be hard to know where to start, or even how to start. This is where a wedding planning steps in to help! Hiring a wedding planner is in most cases a good idea. Here are some common questions that are asked about wedding planners and all the answers you need!
What does a Wedding Planner do?
A wedding planner does all the heavy lifting in wedding planning, they are in short, the coordinator for the entire wedding, and the liaison for the bride and groom to depend on to make their big day happen and to create the wedding of their dreams. A wedding planner will keep track of budgets, payments, who is paying for what part of the wedding, and keep you within your set budget for the wedding day.
How much does a wedding planner cost?
This depends on each individual planner; each
packages that include a day-of-coordination package, a full-service planning package, and your budget, then hire the planner accordingly.
When should I hire a planner?
Ideally you should hire a planner as soon as you’re engaged, or very soon after. This will help to ensure your planner has ample time to thoroughly plan your dream day. Wedding planners do understand that sometimes you are not able to hire a planner as soon as you’d like to, or if your date is closer than an ideal planning time. No matter the timeframe you’ve given your planner, they will do their best to give you everything you want.
Who does a planner coordinate with?
A wedding planner coordinates with all the vendors helping with the wedding, such as the caterer, the photographer, the hair and makeup also coordinate with the parents of the bride and groom, and their wedding party to ensure the entire day goes according to plan.
What does a consultation entail?
A consultation with a wedding planner will be about an hour-long appointment, most planners will meet you in person, but some planners like to do video visits for convenience. The planner will introduce themselves and their business to you, they will let you know what their services entail, what their prices are, what they do during the entire process, and their role in your wedding and during the day of. Remember the consultation is a time for them to sell themselves to you and for you to the end is about you.
26 NORTHERN UTAH WEDDINGS // SUMMER 2022
day-of-coordination and full-service wedding planning?
Day-of-coordination services are more for the bride and groom that want to plan their wedding by themselves with a little help from a planner and want someone to be there on without a hitch. Full-service planning is for the bride and groom that want help with the entire planning process. Day-of-coordination will start 6-8 weeks before the wedding day, full-service planning will start as soon as you hire your planner and go until the wedding festivities are over. All full-service wedding planning should include day-of-coordination.
What kind of questions should I ask during a consultation?
These are some sample questions to get you thinking on what you want to ask, make sure to write down your questions before your consultation, and keep notes during the consultation to refer to after the meeting is over. • What are your price points? • How much experience do you have? • wedding planner/coordinator? • • What is your timeline for planning? • What do your packages include? • you for my wedding? • What is my role once you are hired?
In conclusion…
A wedding planner is right for you if you want it to be right for you. Your wedding day is all about you! Make sure you that you are comfortable with. This process should be fun and exciting, enjoy it! Congratulations again! Love, Maddy NORTHERNUTAHWEDDINGS.COM

After being in the wedding industry as a cake artist for quite some time now, there are many things that I—along with other wedding cake bakers—try to educate our couples regarding their wedding cakes and working with a potential wedding cake vendor. Here are some wedding cake secrets your baker want you to know:
1. Cakes Cost What They Cost for a Reason
Depending on how intricate the cake design is, bakers sometimes work 15- to 20-hour days right before a wedding cake is due to ensure it is fresh—and even longer if we’re juggling with multiple wedding cakes. The more intricate the design, the more time and money it will cost. On top of that, a ‘simple’ cake isn’t necessarily cheaper, because often, the simplest most understated cake can still take hours to create. For example, a single sugar rose can take 2-3 hours to manipulate and shape create as well, as each one is dried before adding another layer atop. Almost always, each piece of element is handmade, and handmade items take time, skill, and care.
2. Styrofoam Cakes aren’t Necessarily More Budget-Friendly
While it may seem like Styrofoam cakes may cut down costs, it may not be the best option. Styrofoam nowadays can be costly, and may cost just as much as the ingredients of the real cake itself. It would take as much time decorating a fake Styrofoam cake, as a baker would a real cake. However, Styrofoam cakes do have a purpose in the cake world. Sometimes a couple would like a statement cake without a lot of leftover cake. Sometimes certain decorative elements can take several days to create, then a Styrofoam cake would be a great option in place of a real cake. Some curds, and creams are not meant to keep at room temperature for a long bad, Styrofoam cakes are a great option to work on a very intricate cake design that would take several days to create, without
spoiling the cake. A small section of the cake would then be made real for the purpose of the cake cutting ceremony. Couples would then have the option of serving real sheet cakes along with it to feed the masses.
3. We Prefer Not to Replicate the Exact Same Cake You Found on Pinterest
As a cake designer, I am also a true artist (as I am also a trained of other cake artist, and therefore think of recreating their work as ‘cake plagiarism’. Instead, I appreciate it when clients come with an open-mind to bring in inspiration photos that we can work with to create a unique cake just for them. We then take these ideas, coupled with their love story, wedding style, and personalities, do we start designing a unique and intentional wedding cake. I believe designing a wedding cake should tell a story about the couple, through the colors, design the couple choose. Every couple has a unique love story, so each wedding cake can be unique, intentional a n d purposeful!
4. Each Baker Has a Signature Style; Find a Baker that Clicks with You!
There are so many amazing wedding bakers in Utah, and we all have unique styles and skills. Each wedding baker has a unique style: some bakers specialize only in buttercream cakes, some specialize in gravity-defying cakes, and cakes. When looking for a wedding baker, we recommend looking through our portfolio to see if our style matches with what you’re looking for. We are always excited to take on a wedding cake order when our clients see our skills and potential; we can really make your our skills!
5. We Love it When You Come Prepared to Your Cake Consultation
Cake consultations are an important appointment between the baker and the engaged couple. It usually lasts 45 mins to an hour, and nowadays—thanks to the pandemic and its push for online interactions—most cake consultations can be done via video conference call. This is especially helpful for couples planning out of town. A cake tasting box can then be reserved and picked-up on an assigned date. During the cake consultation, whether online or in-person, we typically go over the details of your wedding event, and basic information about potentially working with your wedding baker and reserving your date with them. Sometimes, we might even
bakeries, as each cake is customized to each couple, and special attention is given to each order. Specialty items do take time!
7. We Appreciate it When Clients Recognize that Wedding Cakes are also an Artform!
At the end of the day, your wedding cake will eventually be destroyed and consumed. However, for us cake designers, the artistic journey from baking, to creating, to decorating is a very real artistic journey and a way for us to artistically express ourselves. We absolutely appreciate it when our clients recognize that designing cakes are also an artform, and at times, we do have to make last-minute decisions to the design as we see the artistic journey, and one that our clients are absolutely part of, all throughout the collaborative process.
cake. It is so helpful to us when you bring pictures of your invitations and save-theyour wedding style and aesthetic, and help guide us to the right direction with designing your cake. Pictures of your wedding colors, helpful. We prepare ourselves to meet you, and we appreciate when you prepare to meet us!
6. The Sooner You Book Your Cake the Better
This is especially true during the peak wedding months; for Utah, it is between May to September. We recommend getting in touch at least 6 to 9 months before your wedding date. While it may not take that long to design and create your wedding cake, most of us are booked well before. Depending on the scale of operation, many wedding bakers may only take a limited number of cakes per week to ensure the highest quality. Specialty

Twinkle lights hang over the dining area. The one-of-a-kind cake sits on the center table. The Couple enters the reception hall, and that’s the moment when they see the completed cake Couple previously worked with a cake artist to design a cake that represents who they are and what they hope for their future. This custom cake celebrates not only the wedding day, but it also provides something the whole wedding party can enjoy. The cake is both a way to celebrate their unique personalities and give back to their guests. When I got married, I didn’t take the time to design my own wedding cake. I was grateful for what we had, but I didn’t feel connected to it. I have pictures of the cake and guests admiring it, but it didn’t add anything meaningful or unique to my wedding. I regret not taking the time to create a lasting memory and something delicious I could share with my guests. Designing your own wedding cake adds uniqueness and positivity that ties the whole wedding together. Why would I want to design a cake? There are so many choices to make for a wedding it can seem like designing a cake is just an extra step. However, it can be surprisingly therapeutic to pause and think, “What is the feeling and vibe I’m looking to share at our A cake is the perfect way to make a singular statement of who you are and how you want to celebrate your union. Because you can design it, Don’t be afraid to do something new, out of the box, or over the top!
48 NORTHERN UTAH WEDDINGS // SUMMER 2022
If you don’t feel like a natural-born designer, your vision with them. It’s their job to create inspiration and edible art from your ideas. As you sit down with a cake designer, the only priority is your vision. You, as a couple, are the authors and creators of the design. The Couple and design.
What is the vibe of my wedding? I love the drama. When I walk into the room, I want the guests to be blown away with the height and over-the-top decor. But, that may not be what you want as a couple! Here are a few examples of themes to start thinking about your vision: You may want to have an elegant, edgy, meanings. Perhaps a rustic cake can show the sweetness of your relationship and that you are happy with each other just the way you are. An elegant one may show your classy personalities and that you’re ready for all the timeless adventures together. It may be fun to have an edgy cake to show that you are oneof-a-kind and celebrate your uniqueness. But you don’t have to stick to those descriptions; simply decide what your vibe is. What represents me? When you’re representing meaning through a cake, keep in mind it doesn’t need to be literal. You can convey meaning through color, decor, and texture. This is where the cake artist can really come in handy to give you options. Here are some ideas that you can use to start
You can design the cake based on an idea. For example, you may want one striking design on the cake. You could use a textured tier to show you starting to come together as a couple and one smooth golden tier to show you growing into your golden
eyes to represent your uplifting joy. It doesn’t need to be complex, but deliberate placement can change the whole feeling of the cake. Unless you have a themed wedding, it’s nice to place hidden symbols into your cake. You love the idea that one bride used some heather about what special meanings or symbolism you want to display on the cake. It’s wonderful to celebrate what makes you unique. It can help to tie you, your love, and your wedding theme together. The cake is one part of the wedding experience the guest gets to participate in as well, b as a show piece and a tastebud experience. It’s a joy to design a cake to celebrate you- and you get to eat it too!
