We know our city inside and out and whether you’re a first-time visitor, or have lived here for years, What’s On Perth is an invaluable guide to what’s happening in the best capital city on earth (OK, we’re probably biased). As autumn gently unfolds in our state, there are so many fun things to do with all the family. Our cover story may be just the place to start; Sealink’s new vessel, Quokka II will be running to and from Rottnest. The calendar of events is really ramping up now too, with plenty of outdoor concerts to enjoy, attracting stars from around the world including Tim Minchin, Iron Maiden and the Marvel Superhero cohort. Why not head to the Perth Hills Armadale this autumn? This culturally-rich and beautiful part of the city has plenty to offer - including great cafes, boutique wineries and historic venues. Theatre and live performance is
WELCOME an important part of Perth’s DNA, so don’t miss War Horse, the moving tale of a horse and a soldier, brought to life by beautiful puppetry. If you’re heading out of town, we’ve got ideas about how to spend time in Mandurah (don’t miss the annual Crab Fest), the Swan Valley and the gorgeous holiday houses down south from Private Properties. There are reviews too of Bread in Common and new eaterie, La Madonna Nera. Finally, take a trip on our Star Attraction - the Quokka II - to Rottnest Island. It’ll be an experience you never forget. WHAT’S NEW
Museum of WA
IN PERTH
Perth seems to be changing every day and it can be hard to keep up with what’s new in town. Fortunately, that’s where we come in . . .
New museum close to completion By the time the new $400m Museum of WA opens in November, some pretty impressive stats will have been notched up. More than 2,800 jobs were created in the construction industry during the build, and 420 jobs in creative industries are expected to be created by the end of the project. Some 80% of materials used on the project were locally supplied, including steel fabrication and concrete, and the end result is a museum that’s three and a half times bigger than the old building. It includes eight major galleries totalling more than 6,000 sqm, plus a 1,000 sqm special exhibition gallery; food and beverage options, retail and function spaces; and learning studios for people of all ages. Developed with a ‘people first approach’ it will feature the voices of Western Australians sharing their stories, including stories of Aboriginal people told in their voices. Teams from the Museum engaged with more than 45,000 people around Western Australia to seek input into the stories they wanted in their new museum. Centrally located in the Perth 8
Cultural Centre and close to public transport hubs, it will be a place for people to gather – to come together to celebrate, explore and share their identity, culture and unique sense of place. We can’t wait. To find out more, visit museum. wa.gov.au/

rave audience reviews across the country earlier this year, internationally renowned, awardwinning musician, comedian, actor, writer and composer, Tim Minchin is coming back, with BACK in 2020. BACK was Tim’s first Australian tour since returning to the country after almost a decade of living overseas and was seen by almost 69,000 Australians after a seven-year absence from the stage. The longawaited tour also saw him pick up a prestigious Helpmann Award for Best Australian Contemporary Concert. In March 2020, BACK will make two new stops in Hobart and Newcastle and see return dates in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne. BACK is billed as “Old Songs, New Songs, F*** You Songs”, hinting at a set list of material from all corners of Minchin’s eclectic – and often iconoclastic – repertoire. Minchin has been celebrated globally for writing the music and lyrics for “Matilda the Musical”, which has gone on to become one of the most acclaimed musicals of the last 20 years, winning masses of awards. It continues to run in the West End and has already played in over 50 cities worldwide. Back with Tim Minchin, Crown Theatre, Perth, March 6. Visit timminchin.com for tickets.

SET SAIL Based on the true story of Tupaia, a Tahitian star navigator who sailed with James Cook on the HMS Endeavour, Star Navigator is the beautiful and haunting work which explores the 1770 meeting of two master mariners, each from a vastly different place and culture. Although Tupaia and Cook were equally at home with the beauties and terrors of the sea, the work highlights the tragic irony of these two not being able to find their way into each other’s world. Featuring James Clayton as James Cook and tenor Ta’u Pupu’a as Tupaia. Ta’u is originally from Tonga. the best experience of this intriguing island? Rottnest Island is a protected nature reserve, most famously home to the quokka, a small wallaby-like marsupial. Strickland Bay is known for its surf breaks, while reef breaks occur at Radar Reef, off the island’s far western tip. There were 785,001 visitors to the Island in 2018-19 – a remarkable 21 per cent increase in visitor numbers over the two years following the McGowan Government’s introduction of Sealink as the third ferry operator and investment in new accommodation options on the island. “Our new Perth to Rottnest direct service is an extension of our 40 years of river cruise experience on the Swan River with our Captain Cook Cruises brand.”

EVENT
THE PITY of
T
war
here’s a moment in every performance of War Horse when, says puppetry director Gareth Aled, the audience fully believes that the lifesized horse puppets on stage are real. “Early on, out of the darkness you see a light that rises, and you see Joey as a foal, taking his first few steps,” says Gareth. “The audience is immediately captivated from that moment on.” Gareth knows what he’s talking about. He performed on stage with the National Theatre of Great Britain, controlling Joey the foal and Topthorn the adult horse for two years until 2015 before returning as puppet director. Over eight million people have seen the play, in 97 cities and 11 countries, and it has won more than 25 international awards including the Tony for Best Play on Broadway. Based on the beloved book by Michael Morpurgo, it’s a remarkable story of courage, loyalty and friendship, and tells the story of a young boy called Albert and his horse Joey, set against the backdrop of the First World War. This powerfully moving and imaginative drama is a
20
show of phenomenal inventiveness, filled with stirring music and songs, featuring ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing, galloping horses to life on stage. At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land. Albert, who remained on his parents’ Devon farm, cannot forget Joey. Though still not old enough to enlist he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home. Three actors bring each horse to life on stage, an astonishing feat of magic in plain view. “The job of the actors is that they have to focus all their attention on their part of the puppet,” says Gareth. “The audience is drawn to the puppets at all times so it takes a very particular type of person to operate them effectively.” As the head of Joey, Gareth admits
that before taking on the role, he had ‘never picked up a puppet before.’ However, by the end of his role, he had learned to listen and trust at every level his co-puppeteers on stage. “Puppeteering requires more trust than any other role, as well as a generosity of spirit and lack of ego as all three actors work in concert together,” he says. The three puppeteers control the head, heart and hind of each horse puppet, each section revealing incredible levels of emotion and ‘life’. “The head suggests the emotional responses - a horse’s ear is very expressive and is key to how they work, whereas the heart section will curl their hooves, ankles and knee joints as well as making them ‘breathe’.” The hind section is responsible for the horse’s gait, says Gareth, as well as the swishing of the tail. The actors aren’t able to talk to each other in each performance so must have a high level of intuition and instinct to bring each
horse to life. The friendship between Albert and Joey is extremely moving and changes throughout the passing of time, another sleight of hand which is theatrically depicted brilliantly. There’s music and narration which adds depth and colour to this play in unexpected ways. The War Horse world extends too beyond the stage; part of Gareth’s role is to tell the War Horse story to school children too. “I love sharing and engaging with school children and introducing them to theatre in a way they may never have experienced before,” he says. War Horse will be one of Perth’s must-see shows - expect to be moved beyond measure. “It’s greater than the sum of its parts,” says Gareth. “I have vivid memories of seeing it for the first time and I’m still captivated thousands of performances later.” War Horse, Crown Theatre, Perth from March 24. BREAD IN COMMON, FREMANTLE
M
y perfect breakfast or brunch location must have outdoor seating in case I take along my fur child, Chorizo. Add in good coffee, friendly staff and an ever-changing menu that you could visit each week and still find new surprises on your plate, and I’m a fan. A weekend favourite is Bread in Common, a huge, heritagelisted warehouse that’s become an institution in Freo, where produce is locally sourced, grown and is seasonal. Outside there is a small alfresco area with a kitchen garden under the shade of passionfruit vines, perfect for my four-legged friend and I to enjoy breakfast. Bread in Common’s heart is its bakery and its wood-fired ovens, called Hansel and Gretel, making the best bread in Fremantle. The French fruit toast is my pick
26
and heaven for those with a sweet tooth. I choose this indulgence with its strawberries and vanilla cream cheese on this visit and it’s like a warm hug, the perfect match with delicious coffee. With flavours changing depending on what produce is in season you could get lucky and enjoy French fruit toast with grilled peaches or poached pears on a visit. I’ve also enjoyed the waffles served with seasonal fruit and honeycomb on other occasions. If you are more of a savoury breakfast lover, a corn and zucchini hash with fennel, avocado and white bean purée might be a good start to your day. For the ‘avo’ aficionados there’s usually a green option on the menu, and those that like a good fry-up can always get bacon and eggs a variety of ways with that sensational housemade
toast. For the health-conscious house-made granola and yoghurt or a fruity salad is available. While I don’t always rate breakfast spots for their breakfast cocktails, I can confirm that the Bloody Mary at Bread in Common is one of the best I’ve had yet. I consider a Bloody Mary a between-meals meal and it makes day-drinking before the dial hits noon completely acceptable. Bread in Common’s version has the right amount of kick, with lemon and celery to start your day with a bang. There’s also an Aperol Spritz and an Espresso Martini if you like your coffee a little stronger. Bread in Common also serve lunch and dinner with share plates so you can go for brekky and stay for lunch
and take a loaf of bread home. Dog-friendly, breakfast cocktails, delicious plates with seasonal produce and house grown veggies? It ticks all the boxes. Bread in Common, 43 Pakenham St, Fremantle. Visit breadincommon.com.au 27

unconstrained by theme with a soft spot for fine seafood and intricate minimalism. Executive Chef Chase Weber and Head Chef Shane Middleton encourage diners to savour tastes of the familiar and unknown with inventive offerings starring West Australia’s best produce. “The menu has a touch of Japanese culinary inspiration, however we don’t align ourselves with a particular nation or style of cuisine. Living in Western Australia with access to amazing seafood and freshwater species it was a simple decision to promote the best we have locally - from Abrolhos Island octopus and scallops through to Donnybrook marron. Although, it’s not just seafood, with signature dishes such as Wagin quail and Margaret River Wagyu beef,” says Chase Weber. The carefully curated wine list reads like fleur’s soundtrack – interesting, eclectic, and designed to be thoroughly enjoyed. The wine list is predominantly Australian with touches of European and New Zealand influences. A short but concise sake list from some of Japan’s favourite distillers and a range of Mar-tinys and Snaquiris offer guests the option of trying ‘bite-sized’ cocktails before, during or after dinner. fleur at The Royal, 531 Wellington Street, visit theroyalhotelperth.com. au/fleur

listed landmark in the heart of everybody’s favourite port city is intent on morphing into a multi-faceted hospitality venue that will be filled with life, music, entertainment, drinks and bites. So far so good, if the steady stream of happy diners and positive reviews are anything to go by. The Old Synagogue, although a fitting name to honour history, is now home to four new individual venues that have their own unique identities. Visionary hospitality gods Ross Drennan and Drew Flanagan have introduced Mr Chapple’s, Tonic & Ginger, L’Chaim and The Arbor to a grateful public. The two guys behind Nokturnl Events were more than excited about this venture prior to its opening, and what it will bring to Fremantle. “It’s an exciting time in Fremantle at the moment with the city undergoing a once in a lifetime transformation,” says Ross. “The Kings Square Renewal project is nearing completion and new places are popping up all over. The Old Synagogue and adjoining Beer’s Buildings that occupy 92 South Terrace have been boarded up for years. “It’s such a prominent location at the top of the Cappuccino Strip and for us it was an opportunity not to be missed. The revival of this address through the restoration of the old
buildings and the creation of a truly unique entertainment precinct has been amazing to be part of. It’s going to be a fun summer ahead.” Tonic & Ginger is the main eatery within the precinct as a two-level modern Asian restaurant. With chilli king Leigh Power weaving his magic in the kitchen, expect mouth-watering and beautifully plated dishes. “Tonic and Ginger will allow me to continue my love for all things Asian. The Arbor and Mr Chapple’s really excite me as I will get to show I’m not a one-trick pony. The focus for Mr Chapple’s will be small share plates, salumi and cheese, while The Arbor will showcase classic pub fare done my way. In one site we get the opportunity to create and play with four unique beverage offerings. We got the Arbor with all its sesh drinks, Mr Chapple’s with its monster beer list, Tonic & Ginger’s Asian food and beverage matching and downstairs we have a hidden bar, so for those how seek out a good drink we are going all out with Rotary evaporators, centrifuges, in house fermentations, our own distillations, we will be doing some seriously crazy stuff down there.” Mr Chapple’s, named after the first owner of the site after it was 34

Equipped for summer and winter, guests can bask in sunshine on rooftop bar with great views down the cappuccino strip and Fremantle Oval, or enjoy the warmth from the antique French wood fireplace over the cooler months. L’Chaim (pronounced ‘la hime’) is an old world-themed hidden small bar located in the cellar under the building. Think unique drink offerings of an elite calibre with highly trained bar tenders ready to make all beverage dreams come true. Finally, The Arbor is the big beautiful beer garden that has an alfresco and roof top deck overlooking Fremantle Oval. With large mature trees dropping into the basement and vines growing through voids in the ground floor, this stunning space is already the go-to place for guests to make the most of our glorious weather. spending 12 months researching her colourful past and incarnations to inform the new vision. Parker wanted to pay homage not only to The Royal’s rich narrative but also to feed Perth’s growing appetite for unique, world-class venues. “We may not be bringing back the horse and curse fines, the card-game scuffles, the sheep crashing through the saloon window, or the fireworks in the front bar (all true) but it’s the same mixed hub and a helluvalotta fun,” says John. “In terms of fit-out, we wanted to retain The Royal’s history and charm wherever possible, but also blend her creatively with contemporary features. New additions are distinct for contrast, and we’ve opened previously unseen areas to the public. There are different personalities for each area so there’s variety and vibrancy – we want noisy, upbeat and fun.” If you’re keen on next-level food, curated drinks, great service and good tunes, you’ve come to the right place. BAR HOP

La Madonna Nera Mt Hawthorn
I
n the hub of Mt Hawthorn across the road from The Mezz on Scarborough Beach Road is a little bar with a lot of attitude. La Madonna Nera, as its name suggests, is an Italianinfluenced wine bar that will make you feel like you went to Italy without the expensive airfare or long queue at passport control. With old world Italian wine varietals, amaro by the glass, house-made negronis and small plates packing a forte Italian punch, you don’t need to go very far for a slice of la dolce vita. A friend and I arrange to meet on a Saturday evening for a long overdue catch-up over aperitifs. It’s a busy night as I arrive so I am glad we booked. Spoilt for wine choices, I was early for my girl date and was recommended by staff to start with a glass of Monte Schiavo Verdicchio. Verdicchio has been cultivated for hundreds of years in the Marche region of central Italy and this was my first tasting of this Italian variety. It is dry and crisp with lovely minerality and a sea-air freshness and perfect for the hot balmy evening; the ideal choice, as it turns out.
42
Sometimes as a female it can feel awkward waiting in bars but the staff at La Madonna Nera were friendly and checked on me as I waited and made me feel comfortable. My friend
arrives and we order some food and wine together. She chooses a gorgeous bottle of white wine, Graci 2017 Etna Bianco. The wine is a blend of organically-grown Carricante and Cataratto, varieties that are both new to me, grown on the north face of volcanic Mt Etna in Sicily. It has lots of orange blossom on the nose and lemon notes with crisp acidity and minerality due to those volcanic soils, and with a fuller body its delicious. The staff are very knowledgeable and happy to recommend you a wine to suit your taste, and the variety extends from Italian to Australian wines with organic and natural wines available. We order some heirloom tomatoes with stracciatella and semi-dried olive which arrive full of colour and flavour. Some salumi (Italian cold cuts of meat) with house pickles included lovely bresaola and the pickles certainly pack a punch. Don’t go past the arancini if you visit. A surprising parmesan custard was inside, served on a piselli cream (pea to you and me) with a tomato oil. The saltiness and full flavour of the parmesan custard pops against the rice of the arancini and these were filled with creamy, cheesy goodness - a real highlight. There are more substantial plates
of pasta if you feel hungrier and the menu included a potato gnocchi in sugo, pappardelle with roast duck and porcini ragu, a squid ink tagliolini with blue swimmer crab, and a marinated lamb in gin and juniper berries. We ended the night with a cheese board served with Postcode Honey and lovely bread and wafer. The aged Parmesan on the board reminds me of an episode of the Netflix series with Samin Nosrat ‘Salt, Fat Acid, Eat’ where Samin talks about the ‘candy of Parmesan’ after trying a 40-month-aged parmesan in Italy, and I am right there with her in that moment, as the tyrosine crystals pop in your mouth.
IF YOU WANT to live la dolce vita Verdict: and not burst the purse strings getting there, make La Madonna Nera your next date night out. Don’t miss: The arancini Price: Small plates from $12 Hours: Weds – Thurs 4pm –late, Fri 12pm – late, Sat 4pm – late. Aperitivo 4 – 6pm Wed – Sat.

Don’t miss . . . HOOK LINE & SINKER From coast to coast, a slice of Ireland comes to Scarborough. Just in time for summer, Perth has got its first Irish Pub where beach goers can enjoy the perfect pint of Guinness overlooking the Indian Ocean. From the team who brought Perth one of its longest running Irish Pubs, Durty Nelly’s, they’ve introduced The Galway Hooker. Stocked with Australia’s largest Irish whiskey selections, with over 70 to be exact, and a Guinness only cool room – The Galway Hooker and its team are dedicated to pouring the perfect pint of Guinness and showcasing the best in Irish hospitality along Scarborough’s foreshore. Lee Behan, Dublin native and ARK Group operations manager advises that the new addition will make the perfect pub addition for locals and tourists alike. “Scarborough is buzzing, this venue will add even more vibrancy to the area. Irish Pubs are known for their hospitality and great atmosphere and we’ll be taking this to the next level with an impressive range of quality food and drinks.” The story of The Galway Hooker starts in the 19th century with a 44
fisherman’s boat iconic to Galway Bay for ‘hook and line’ fishing. Crafted to navigate the shallow waters, they were small, tough and notoriously prone to sinking on the wind ravaged shores of the West Coast. Designed and built from Ireland by GGD Global, the pub was shipped over and reassembled on our shores. Paul Moloney, the venue manager of Galway Hooker says they’ve paid special attention to detail to create an authentic Irish Pub experience. “We’ve gone to great lengths to feature the iconic trademarks of an Irish Pub, in the beautiful coast setting of Scarborough. The venue will play host to cosy nooks, snugs, a live stage for the bands and an elevated alfresco area that overlooks the Indian Ocean – at the heart of the venue is an actual Galway Hooker boat.” The Galway Hooker, Tenancy 3/148 The Esplanade, Scarborough. Don’t miss . . . Bran nue mural commissioned A brilliant initiative between West Australian Opera and City of Subiaco has resulted in a new commission to celebrate the 30thanniversary of iconic musical, Bran Nue Dae. Bran Nue Dae is an important Western Australian story and 30 years after its premiere it will return to The Regal Theatre for a limited season during the Perth Festival. To celebrate this 30th anniversary West Australian Opera has collaborated with the City of Subiaco to commission a commemorative art mural that will ensure Bran Nue Dae’s legacy lives on long after the curtain closes. Designed by Perth-based artist Kambarni (pictured below) the mural pays homage to the first Aboriginal musical and will also pay tribute to Bran Nue Dae’s historical links with the City of Subiaco. Kambarni is a descendant from Nimunburr and Yawuru people of the Kimberley and the Ballardong Noongar people of Perth and he is familiar with the cultural significance of Bran Nue Dae and 52
its timeless story. Kambarni, who was a Western Australian Young Person of the Year Award recipient in 2018, has combined some of Bran Nue Dae’s most prominent motifs and integrated key symbolic elements into the work including a Turtle, Dingo and Red-Winged Parrot representing the individual and the collective journey, a major theme in Bran Nue Dae. “This mural will be a reminder of how important sharing and celebrating local stories, heritage, culture and the arts is to Subiaco,” said City of Subiaco Mayor, Penny Taylor. Carolyn Chard, executive director of West Australian Opera, said “it’s wonderful to be able to have a legacy of this work and we are grateful to the City of Subiaco for supporting this mural. Kam is an outstanding young artist - coincidentally his grandfather was best man at Jimmy Chi’s wedding – who has paid great attention to detail and you can watch him work on site in the lead up to completion later in February.” The Bran Nue Dae mural will be on the corner of Roberts Road and Rokeby Road to coincide with the season (6 - 15 February) at the Regal Theatre, and will be viewable by all

ON THE BEATEN TRACK Eagle View Walk
HEAD FOR THE HILLS
WA Trails has some great trails to explore, often with sensational views to reward your hard yards. The Kalamunda Mountain Bike Trail Network With over 40km of fully signed singletrack, the Kalamunda Trails area is the most popular MTB destination in WA. It is only a 40 minutes drive from the centre of Perth, and is situated in both picturesque National Park and State Forest. The Black Stump Pump Track is an outstanding facility suitable for riders of all ages and abilities and a great introduction to mountain biking. Bikes hire and classes are available from Rock ‘n’ Roll Mountain Biking and a shuttle service is run by volunteers on some Sundays.
Eagle View Walk, John Forrest National Park The Eagle View Walk Trail is situated in John Forrest National park in the Darling Ranges. This Top Trail takes walkers away from the picnic areas, initially following Jane Brook down the valley. It then climbs up the valley wall where you can stop and admire the view. The trail then weaves its way up and down valleys, creek lines and hills before heading back to the Brook which it follows back to the main visitor’s area. Pack a picnic and stop at 74
Hovea Falls for lunch. The 15 kilometre trail can be tackled clockwise or anticlockwise. It’s more challenging than other trails in the park, but your efforts are well rewarded. Find out more on the Trails WA app.
Kingfisher Walk Trail, Walyunga National Park Walyunga National Park covers 1,800 hectares of the Darling Range, tucked behind the Darling Scarp, covering both sides of a steep valley. Just to the east of the park, in the picturesque Avon Valley, the Avon River joins the Brockman River to form the Swan River which passes through the tree lined valley. Walyunga contains one of the largest known Aboriginal campsites around Perth and was still in use by the Noongar people late last century. The area has been used as a meeting place for more than 6000 years. Walyunga is an Aboriginal name, but its meaning is uncertain. Local Noongar people believe the Swan River was carved by the Waugal, and greet the dreamtime serpent here by rubbing sand on their bodies and throwing it in the water. The walk trail starts beside the

Burswood Paddle Trail Starting in East Perth, the Burswood Paddle Trail is a wonderful paddle on the doorstep to the city. This is great opportunity to pack a picnic and utilise some of the secluded picnic coves along the way, or pull up at Claisebrook Cove and stretch your legs for a well earned pub meal. Kayak hire is available - check out the trail on Trails WA for more information. The Trails WA website and App (iOS only) showcase an extensive trail network across Western Australia. ON THE RECORD Leigh Nash
IMAGES Crib Creative
L
eigh Nash’s Dingo Sauce Co is about to hit the big time. The North Freo company has scored a spot on the Season 11 line-ip of sauces for Hot Ones, an online channel which regularly reaches 30 million views each month. His Widow Maker sauce is made with the six hottest chillies in the world - so it certainly lives up to its name. Here are Leigh’s most important music choices, which have peppered (sorry, Ed.) his life to date. See Season 11 of Hot Ones on February 7 on YouTube. METALLICA - Master of Puppets in 1986 - At the time I was just getting into hard rock and heavy metal and I’d been given some money for my birthday. My family were living in Sunbury in Victoria at the time and I went to the local record shop and they guy there told me it was going to change my world - he was right! It was
80
the heaviest thing I’d ever heard up until then and it became a soundtrack that stayed with me through my teen years. I’d go off and listen to other types of music but always come back to this album as one of my all time favourites. AC/DC - If You Want Blood LIVE - I’d grown up listening to AC/DC and was always a big fan but this album was next level for me. We’d moved over to WA at this stage and were living in Augusta. Mum and Dad got me the AC/DC box set for Christmas and it was the only thing I cared about that year. It has the best versions of all their best songs - Bon Scott was absolutely on fire. NWA - Straight Outta Compton - I hated R&B and mainstream hip hop and had a lot of preconceived ideas about what ‘types’ of music I should be
listening to. Then I discovered NWA and this album opened me up to a whole lot more diversity in my musical tastes. Previously I’d had a fairly narrow focus on metal, hardcore and punk but I really responded to the grittyness of this album and realised that a lot of the messages (in the music) were the same. I especially liked the comical side to NWA - really dark at times but also really funny. The political, anti establishment messages resonated with my rebellious teenage self and I felt like these guys spoke the same language. RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE - self titled - This was the soundtrack of an era. By now I was living in Margaret River and very into the whole surfing and skating scene. I wasn’t a big fan of school and I spent a lot of time cutting class and taking off to the beach with my surf board. I remember the ‘f*ck you I won’t do what you told me’ lyric was like my mantra. I felt disillusioned by the whole ‘system’ - and what I felt were antiquated attitudes in a small town. Me and my group of friends were constantly looking for extremes - we did a whole lot of crazy stuff motor bikes, cars, stupid tricks on skate boards and surf boards - always looking for the next bit of excitement. They were really fun times - full on but fun and the friends I made during those years are still among my best mates to this day. THE MISFITS - Collection - This album was a dark mix of punk/ hardcore that really influenced the kind of music I was playing. I’d always been messing around with a guitar and I ended up in a bad called Skum with a group of friends in Margs (Margaret River). Somehow I was the singer - I really can’t sing - but to be honest
there wasn’t a whole lot of musicality involved - you just needed to be able to shout really loud and I was a big fella with a large set of lungs. Looking back on it I’m not sure you’d call a lot of what we did music in the strict sense of the word but it was a great way to express how we were all feeling at that point in our teenage years. Skum was a whole lot of fun. We played a lot locally and we mostly got paid in alcohol. DRI - Full Speed Ahead - Discovering these guys really changed the way we preformed. I was so impressed with their stage presence and all the crazy antics - thrashing around, stage dives, just totally in the moment of madness. We brought a lot of that to our stage shows with Skum and I remember so totally epic mosh pit moments. The album is classic thrash metal. We covered several of the songs from this album and they were always crowd favourites. SASHA & DIGWEED - Northern Exposure - My musical tastes really started to branch out more in the late 90’s early 2000s. I’d discovered DJ-ing and as the Skum era ended I got more and more into dance music. Initially I’d had the notion that ‘dance’ music was techno or rave music but when I came across progressive house and trance. It blew my mind. I remember Sasha & Digweeds music felt like a journey and I realised that’s what DJ-ing was all about - you were like a guide leading the crowd through a musical journey towards a crescendo - the light and shade, troughs and peaks. The Northern Exposure series was a turning point for my Djing style - it’s totally stood the test of time to me and something I still love to listen to today. 81
INTER VIEW ... by Gabi Mills
Indian standup and YouTube superstar Kanan Gill brings the world premiere of his new show to Australia with a performance at the Heath Ledger Theatre on April 24.
DID YOU HEAR THE ONE ABOUT ...
I
KANAN GILL
n this personal, observational and deeply stupid follow up to his 2019 Festival smash hit Teetar, Kanan’s new hour will delight his long-term fans and establish a whole new legion of followers. Gabi Mills gets to know this funny guy.
GM: Tell me about your new show which as been described as a ‘deeply stupid follow-up’ to your smash hit Teetar. KG: This one is called The End, and it’s about the end of the world, human life, ice cream and like two other things. 82
I self describe all things as ‘deeply stupid’, and I think as long as the shows stay deeply stupid I’m on the right track. GM: How did you get into comedy? Is it your dream career (after software engineering obviously)? KG:: Well obviously my dream was to be a software engineer (no, not really). But it was the obvious thing to do if you have a computer science degree, which I found myself holding at 21. I didn’t enjoy software, it wasn’t near as silly a career as I was searching for.
At the time stand up was just starting in Bangalore, so I went to a few open mics. Before I knew it I was hooked. GM: Have you always told stories? How do you pick your subjects? KG: I’ve always loved writing stories but stand up comes from a different place in your mind. Sometimes it’s about the funniest thing I see or something true that’s happened in my life that I have to twist to make some sort of point, or just bizarre things that have a habit of happening to me.
that comedy audiences are almost the same wherever you go. Everyone likes a great joke. If someone buys a ticket to your show, it’s because they want to enjoy it. GM: Do you enjoy the comedy festival format for testing out new material? KG: I hope so! It’s all these shows back to back so there’s time to make adjustments and tweaks after every single show. Usually that many shows can render an end of festival show pretty different from the starting.
“I self describe all things as ‘deeply stupid’, and I think as long as the shows stay deeply stupid I’m on the right track.”
Kanan Gill
GM: Who has inspired you in your career to date? Who are your comedy heroes? KG: I’ve been watching stand up since I was a kid. The earliest were probably Russel Peters, Eddie Izzard, Brian Regan, Pablo Francisco. I remember just being awed watching how many different ways there were to be funny. I try to be all of those but I’ll be happy just with one. GM: What are Aussie audiences like compared to those back home? KG: I did a world tour last year. Got out of India and did shows in all these new places. Singapore to Qatar to The Netherlands, America and of course Australia. My biggest take away is
GM: Have you been to Perth before? What are you looking forward to seeing or doing? KG: I did some stand up in Perth last year as well but only had half a day to spend in the city. So this time I’m looking forward to seeing something besides a comedy club and a supermarket. GM: Tell me a joke. KG: Knock knock (We’ll finish this in subsequent interviews) Catch Kanan and his funny friends during the Perth Comedy Festival from April 20 to May 17. Visit perthcomedyfestival.com.au. 83

VISITOR INFORMATION
ELECTRICITY The electrical current in Australia is 240/250 volts AC 50Hz. The Australian three-pin power outlet is different from many Asian and European countries. If your appliances are 100 C, check if there is a 110/240V switch; if not, you will require an adaptor which can be bought at many shops in WA.
SEASONAL FRUITS Produce that is in season locally is cheaper, tastes better and has more nutrients. Produce that has been transported over long distances overseas or cross-country cannot compete with locally grown produce for freshness, taste and nutritional value. Some locally produced fruits are:
TIME ZONES WA is on Western Standard Time (WST) which is eight hours ahead of GMT. Perth is one-and-a-half hours behind South Australia and the Northern Territory and two or three hours behind all other Australian states, depending on daylight saving between October and March.
Spring Berries, currants, figs, guava, grapes, kiwifruit, kumquats, mulberries, nectarines, onges, passionfruit, strawberries.
CLIMATE Perth has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot dry summers. Perth is the sunniest capital in Australia with an average of eight hours sunshine a day. The skies above Perth are often bright blue without a cloud in the sky. Combine the warm weather and beautiful beaches and it’s easy to see why so many people enjoy the outdoor lifestyle of Western Australia. In summer many people can be found at one of the many beautiful white sandy beaches along the coastline, cooling down in the clean blue Indian Ocean. Spring (September - November) Summer (December - February) Autumn (March - May) Winter (June - August). 88
Summer Apples, apricots, avocados, cherries, grapes, mangoes, melons, peaches, plums, strawberries. Autumn Apples, custard apples, figs, grapes, guava, kiwifruit, mandarins, melons, pears, olives, passionfruit, quinces. Winter Apples, avocados, grapefruits, kiwifruit, limes, mandarins, honeydew melons, oranges, pears. POSTAGE The suburban post office is open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. AIRPORTS Getting to and from the airport - The CONNECT shuttle operates to and from Perth Airport Domestic Terminal 3 (T3). If you arrive at the International Terminal 1 (T1) or Domestic Terminal 2 (T2) take the free terminal transfer bus which operates seven days a week to T3. T
he world’s largest high-rise modular hotel is right here in Perth. The Ibis Styles East Perth (69 Adelaide Terrace, East Perth) has added to this part of the city’s explosion in terms of visitability, being perfectly positioned for those who’d like to go to Optus Stadium, the newly renovated The Royal and the WACA for the Men’s and Women’s T20 World Cup International matches. The hotel’s Eastside Social Bar and Restaurant offers a ‘super food’ geared menu, coupled with elegant comfort hotel favourites. Other hotel amenities include a 24-hour state-of-the-art gymnasium, high-tech Urban Offices and an effervescent co-working space for guests and locals. Perfection defined Boomerang House in Quindalup is the perfect getaway for a weekend down south, says Gabi Mills.
I
f you’re going to stay anywhere for the long Australia Day weekend, it seems only appropriate you check into a place called Boomerang House. Part of the Private Properties portfolio of dreamy holiday homes spread around some of the Margaret River region’s most desirable addresses, our home from home for three nights was in a cul-de-sac in Quindalup. Ideally located pretty much equidistant between Yallingup and Dunsborough, all our favourite locations were just a short drive away. Fancy an ice cream? Simmo’s is five minutes away. Need to cool off with a refreshing dip? Meelup beach’s azure and placid bay is a short ten minutes drive and you’ll have sand between your toes. The house itself is a work of modernist art. Brushed concrete, natural wood and floor-to-ceiling windows make you feel like you’re living at one with nature. And that nature is very close; every night, our party of six was joined by a little mob of kangaroos. A mother and young joey, and a dad too keeping a watchful eye on his family. Later on a mother with a joey in her pouch would quietly join the throng. It was magical watching this play out every night and made for unforgettable memories for the younger members of our household.

If you love to cook while on holiday, you’ll find all the mod cons at Boomerang House. Top quality fixtures and fittings make this a luxury break for the most discerning guest; you won’t want to leave. Built to resemble a boomerang, those glass walls maximise the views down to the bird-filled marri forest and creek (filled with water in winter) to the rear of the property. Comfortably accommodating six people, with a master suite in one half of the house which is split by an undercover alfresco area complete with gas bbq and fireplace, the lounge area has an epic speaker system to fill the space with your own tunes. Check in and you’ll never want to leave. Visit privateproperties.com.au/holidayhomes/boomerang-house/
