Preceptor Newsletter February 4, 2022 "Changing your mind doesn’t make you a flip-flopper or a hypocrite. It means you were open to learning." -- Adam Grant
Having a hard time communicating directly with your students? Radical Candor is a feedback framework that helps you deliver guidance that is both kind and clear, specific and sincere.
By "challenging directly" and "caring personally," the preceptor can give purposeful and clear feedback. If not challenging directly and "beating around the bush," the preceptor falls into "ruinous empathy." If challenging directly, but not caring, the individual falls down to "obnoxious aggression." Without either of those, the individual goes to"manipulative insincerity," a passive-aggressive stance. You can find more about these concepts and how to give better feedback from the book ("Radical Candor: Be a Kick-Ass Boss Without Losing Your Humanity" by Kim Scott) or the website: radicalcandor.com
Journal Monitor There’s a lot in the literature about trends and improvements in experiential education. So we’ve created an easy way for you to keep up: The Journal Monitor. In each preceptor newsletter, we’ll provide you a brief look at some current articles. And we’ll provide the source information as well so you can take a look at the entire article yourself.
Mini-chalk talks (MCTs) are a teaching strategy used to teach a few practical, clinically relevant learning points. They are intended to be quick (less than 5 minutes) and facilitate discussion with the learner.
Implementing minichalk talks to enhance teaching and learning
The preceptor uses a card (such as an index card) to deliver information visually, examples include a Venn diagram, simple table, flowchart, timeline, drug delivery description, etc. The card can be created prior to the learning experience with bulleted learning points on the back. Developing a "bank" of MCTs can help the preceptor give quick teaching moments throughout the rotation. (Example below)
