IPPE Rotations
The Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) are to expose students to pharmacy practice, often for the rst time
What do the ACPE standards say about IPPEs?
The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) is the accreditation body for pharmacy education IPPEs are described in Standard 12 of the 2016 Standards and the Guidance Document
Key elements include:
IPPEs should include shared patient care decision-making and professional ethics and behaviors
IPPEs are at least 300 hours total with 150 hours balanced between community and healthsystem settings
Simulated practice experiences can be up to 60 hours and may be used to mimic pharmacistcare situations, especially those that have high-risk, low-occurrence (CPR, medical emergencies) or scenarios di cult to experience in real life (unique disease states, limits by the state pharmacy practice act)
Students may be placed at a site where they are employed as long as the intern and employee roles are clearly differentiated and do not overlap
IPPEs link the didactic curriculum to real-world situations and application
IPPE Evaluations
The IPPE evaluation includes several sections to assess the student for practice readiness:
Presbyterian 10 Competencies
Preceptor evaluates student based on benchmarks (reinforced or reinforced-to-practice) for the level of student (P1, P2, or P3)
Entrustable Professional Activities
Allows preceptor to indicate the "trust" in the student to complete pharmacist tasks
Not calculated into nal grade, but monitored by school to achieve established benchmarks
Veri cation of completion of applicable IPPE workbook activities
Preceptor Comments (both visible and con dential)
IPPEs are pass/no pass

Every effort must be made to minimize the time missed from the experience This includes such options as traveling in the evening hours or scheduling such events at the beginning or end of the week, so travel can occur on weekends.
