APPE Rotations The Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) are set up to ensure that students are able to apply and contextualize the concepts learned in the first 3 years of the curriculum. What do the ACPE standards say about APPEs? The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) is the accreditation body for pharmacy education. APPEs are described in Standard 13 of the 2016 Standards and the Guidance Document. Key elements include: Required APPEs include: advanced community, ambulatory patient care, hospital/healthsystem pharmacy, inpatient patient care Elective APPEs give students the opportunity to explore different settings of pharmacy (including indirect patient care) and mature professionally APPEs emphasis direct patient care on the majority of rotations, especially on outpatient (community/ambulatory care) and inpatient settings APPEs expose students to diverse patient populations Students become experienced in interprofessional experiences Each required APPE is at least 160 hours and all APPEs are 1440 hours (36 weeks) Required APPEs must be completed in the US and quality assurance must be completed on elective rotations outside the US Schools are encouraged to offer APPEs that include innovative healthcare systems The APPE curriculum includes activities related to direct patient care, interprofessional interaction and practice, medication dispensing and distribution, and professional development

Some of our students may be presenting posters, involved in leadership roles for these organizations, or participating in residency showcases. As with any planned absence, students are required to contact the Office of Experiential Education prior to making plans to attend these events so that we can work with them to minimize time away from their rotation. Conference participation is also considered an excused absence. Thus, any time missed may need to be made up at your discretion, and of course, we expect students to successfully complete all activities and objectives of their rotations. Job Interviews: September through November can be a busy time for our P4s as they interview for positions. All time off for job interviews must be approved in advance by the student’s preceptor. Every effort must be made to minimize the time missed from the experience. This includes such options as traveling in the evening hours or scheduling such events at the beginning or end of the week, so travel can occur on weekends. Additionally, students are strongly encouraged to utilize their off months for interviews.
