2020 2021 ANNUAL REPORT

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Presbyterian College is a magnificent institution of higher learning that has been supported, sustained, and advanced for 141 years through the strong philanthropic support of alumni, family, friends, churches, and foundations. This annual report offers a summary of the efforts of many who worked over the past fiscal year to supply current and future generations of Blue Hose with the exceptional educational experiences they deserve. Thank you for your commitment to PC. In addition to being donors, many of you engaged as volunteer leaders on boards, councils, chapters, and as class agents. We are grateful for your impactful efforts. I am also appreciative of Bob Staton ’68 for all he accomplished during his consequential tenure as president to make PC a stronger, better college. We witnessed many meaningful accomplishments during this fiscal year. We saw the establishment of several new endowments, including one honoring Dr. Booker Ingram upon his retirement as a longserving professor of political science and the first Director of Diversity and Inclusion. A significant renovation transformed Belk Auditorium and will fundamentally improve the experience of all students, faculty, and staff who use and will use the space. Students begin and end their careers at PC in this hallowed building. Welcoming the first cohort of doctoral students in our Occupational Therapy program was a significant milestone for the College. Our students are the fortunate benefactors of planned gifts, long-ago thought through and committed to provide significant resources to future generations of Blue Hose. The lifeblood of a college like PC is its students. Thank you for believing in Presbyterian College, and thank you for the inspiring generosity that enables our students to experience this wonderful college and all that it has to offer.

LETTERS

I am incredibly thankful to you and all of our alumni, parents, friends, corporations and foundations who continue to make Presbyterian College a philanthropic priority. In the year covered by this report, July 1, 2020–June 30, 2021, the PC Family gave gifts and commitments totaling $8,573,049—an increase of more than 10% over the previous year and more than double what was given in 2019. This is amazing, but not surprising! When our world was at its most vulnerable, the Presbyterian College Family rallied together to support faculty, staff, and students of our beloved College. Your gifts, large and small, supported PC through capital projects, the annual fund and helped to build up our endowment. I am particularly proud of the Class of 2021 who, in spite of a challenging year, left a gift of more than $7,980, supporting Blue Hose who follow them while they persist to graduate themselves. You are amazing! During this past year, hundreds of alumni, parents and friends volunteered their time to advance PC. Whether you raised your hand to help with an event, served on a board or counsel, referred a student to PC, or joined us in support of our fourth annual PC Giving Day, you made an impact! Because of your generosity and the generosity of others: • Eight new endowments were established to provide much-needed financial support to first-generation and underserved populations. • More than 200 alumni partnered with current students to engage in career exploration. • Gifts to the GRACE (Giving Resources & Achieving Community Equity) Fund provided textbooks and personal items to students in need. • The fourth annual Volunteer Leaders Conference had historic attendance. My hope is that as you read this annual report, you will reflect on your own PC experiences and feel a sense of pride knowing that you enriched the boundless potential of current and future Blue Hose. Thank you, for giving your time, talent and treasure to our Presbyterian College. May you be as blessed as those you so generously supported!

CLASS OF 2021

SENIOR GIVING CAMPAIGN

T

he Class of 2021 was full of PC pride at the Senior Wine & Cheese event where

they celebrated a landmark giving campaign and presented their gift to President

vandenBerg. The campaign had the highest participation rate in its history, exceeding

the last record-holding class’s participation (PC ’17) by two percentage points. The

campaign began February 25 with the Campaign Kickoff on the Alumni Green, continued with an April 10 Tailgate, an April 30 Golf Tournament, and wrapped up with the Senior Wine & Cheese on May 5.

CLASS OF 2021

Below: Committee members

C

ampaign co-chairs Reagan Osbon and Rylee White left us with words of what motivated them, memories, and words of wisdom, as they looked back on the Senior Giving Campaign and their time at PC. We are grateful for their leadership in the Campaign, on campus and among their classmates. We also extend our gratitude to the Senior Giving Campaign committee members and the entire Class of 2021 for showing great perseverance and character during their junior and senior years. WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A PART OF THE SENIOR GIVING CAMPAIGN TO BEGIN WITH AND THEN WHY DID YOU WANT TO TAKE A LEADERSHIP ROLE WITHIN THE SENIOR GIVING CAMPAIGN?

For three years, I walked by Alumni Green every day and even told potential students on tours about our Senior Giving Campaign and that one day, they too could leave their own lasting impact on campus. When Ashtin gave me a call asking me to work hands-on with the campaign, I was excited to help our class come together after an incredible four years to give back to the college that we all love. When I realized that I had the opportunity to take on a leadership role, I was ecstatic. I know that I had some incredible peers, and the opportunity to help select who I would be working with was such an incredible chance to get to know them better and to truly build a special team, which we did. WHY DID YOU FEEL LIKE THE SENIOR GIVING CAMPAIGN IS IMPORTANT FOR THE CURRENT SENIOR CLASS AT PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE?

Presbyterian College has given me so much. It has given every Blue Hose so much. The opportunity to give back is too great to pass up. But even beyond that, it gave me the opportunity to grow closer with my classmates, build my resume, and build important connections within the PC community. 8

PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE

WHAT DID IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE THE HIGHEST CLASS GIVING PERCENTAGE AT 70% IN THE HISTORY OF THE SENIOR GIVING CAMPAIGN?

Simply put, we’re the best to ever do it. I challenge any other class to match our enthusiasm and passion for Presbyterian College. It was certainly a highpoint in my college career, and something that I will never forget. Looking back, it was such an excellent exclamation point on my four years and really opened my eyes to the fact that the Blue Hose care on a level that most college communities don’t. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM THE SENIOR GIVING CAMPAIGN?

Easily the Senior Wine and Cheese. It was the first chance that our class could gather in a social setting, drink some free beer and wine from the College, and really just experience college again. COVID-19 really messed up our experiences together. We missed our Senior Opening Convocation in our caps and gowns, we missed presenting our capstones and research projects that we worked so hard on in person, and our last Christmas at PC. The list goes on and on. But we had the chance to come together in fellowship and celebration. In addition, we presented our new President, Dr. Matt vandenBerg, with a check representing our hard work. It was such a special moment. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CLASS OF 2022 SENIOR GIVING CAMPAIGN?

Enjoy every moment. You were asked to be

a part of this committee because someone believes in you and that you can bring something to the table, but don’t forget to enjoy it. The Senior Giving Campaign is one of the last chances that you have with your fellow class leaders. Grow the relationships that you have with people, but also begin new ones if there are people on the committee that you don’t know as well. Outside of the committee, enjoy everything you can about being a senior. You’ve worked hard enough the last three and a half years, so you’ve earned the right to have fun, even on fundraising committee. WHY DID YOU WANT TO BE A PART OF THE SENIOR GIVING CAMPAIGN TO BEGIN WITH AND THEN WHY DID YOU WANT TO TAKE A LEADERSHIP ROLE WITHIN THE SENIOR GIVING CAMPAIGN?

When Reagan Osbon asked me to join him in co-leading this campaign, I was honored to be considered for the role and immediately accepted. I had heard of the Senior Giving Campaign and its brick-selling incentive but it was not until I realized all that the Senior Giving Campaign committee is responsible for that I became passionate about leading this initiative. I felt a commitment to my class for multiple reasons. PC instilled the importance of service to me during my time there, and I feel that donating back to our college before graduation puts the cherry on top when it comes to our service-led spirit. I also saw this as an opportunity to ensure that

Presbyterian College traditions that coincide with the Senior Giving Campaign, such as Countdown to Graduation, Senior Wine and Cheese, and the bricks at Alumni Green, were continued despite a national pandemic. WHY DID YOU FEEL LIKE THE SENIOR GIVING CAMPAIGN IS IMPORTANT FOR THE CURRENT SENIOR CLASS AT PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE?

The Senior Giving Campaign was especially important for our senior class, as can be seen through the fact that it holds the highest class giving percentage, because it represented a sense of normalcy that we all craved so badly during our last year at PC. My committee and I utilized this campaign to organize events and gatherings that we had missed during the end of our junior and beginning of our senior year. We planned and marketed our traditional functions and even created new events, such as the Campus Golf Tournament and Food Trucks & Football. While my class handled the changes that came along with the

pandemic well, it grew our appreciation for our experiences at PC and made us all the more thankful to call it home. WHAT DID IT MEAN TO YOU TO BE THE HIGHEST CLASS GIVING PERCENTAGE AT 70% IN THE HISTORY OF THE SENIOR GIVING CAMPAIGN?

I am incredibly grateful for the support my classmates gave me and the entire Senior Giving Campaign committee. I think it well represents how tight knit the Class of 2021 is and our love for Presbyterian College. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEMORY FROM THE SENIOR GIVING CAMPAIGN?

My favorite memory from the Senior Giving Campaign is the Senior Wine and Cheese. This was the first event Dr. vandenBerg and his family hosted at their house, making it even more special. This was one of the first gatherings many of my classmates and I had been to in over a year, and it did not disappoint.

BRENT GLASGOW ’21 HEATHER GRICE ’21 ABIGAIL HARRISON ’21 DOM JONES ’21

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO THE CLASS OF 2022 SENIOR GIVING CAMPAIGN?

My three pieces of advice would be: 1. Be passionate about the campaign! It is an exciting position to be able to encourage your classmates to become donors and plan events for your class. Buy into it, and your class will follow. 2. Recruit a diverse group of people for the Senior Giving Campaign Committee. Reagan and I hand-picked our committee, looking for people that would be passionate about the campaign, that were well liked and driven people, and that covered different areas on campus. Try to find people that, together, will be able to reach your entire class. 3. Practice communication skills! Reagan and I created chairs within our committee to delegate specific responsibilities to. This worked great for us, but make sure to also keep these committee members in the loop and make them feel appreciated.

Fund Helps Retain Students at Risk of Withdrawing

B

rad and Kay Bryant were on the PC campus in 1973, during the oil embargo and the recession that followed. Both of their families were affected by the national crisis. Kay’s father took on a second job to help pay Kay’s tuition. And Brad’s father, a residential developer, saw the housing market grind to a halt during the economic crisis. Years later, both more deeply appreciated the sacrifices their parents made so that they could stay at PC. But many of their classmates weren’t so fortunate. Kay recalls classmates being fully immersed in campus life one semester who were not there the next. Brad remembers counseling fraternity brothers who wanted to finish their degree at PC heartbroken over the fact that a parent had lost a job, the mortgage was due, or an unexpected hospital bill meant they had to withdraw from PC. “No Blue Hose, or their family, should be faced with deciding between an unforeseen financial emergency and giving up on their dream of a PC degree,” Kay said. Because of this belief, the Bryants support the Forever BLUE Fund. Established in 2020, the fund provides financial assistance to students who have demonstrated persistence and are on track for graduation. Due to financial emergency, however, they may be at risk for withdrawing. The fund provides grants to students for expenses related to the Cost of Attendance based upon demonstrated need and awarded through a process administered by the Office of Financial Aid.

PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE

BLUE stands for Bridging Life’s Unexpected Emergencies. The annual fund is part of the College’s strategy to recruit, retain, and graduate low-income, first-generation students. These students, along with their families, may believe the

smallest financial calamity would derail their attainment of a liberal arts education. One of PC’s core values is that the economic status of any prospective student should not prohibit her or him from the pursuit of a liberal arts education on a church-related residential college campus. Studies reveal that students of color are more likely to be low-income and the first in their family to attend college. As a result, the fund serves to increase the capacity of PC to equitably meet the need of the College to provide a diverse, high-quality learning experience for the entire student body.

“It’s our way of paying it forward,” says Katherine Bryant, Brad and Kay’s daughter. “When you reflect on the fact that so many of our alumni follow PC’s ethos of service through careers in teaching, ministry, and public service, careers that society does not value monetarily, it is incumbent upon all of us to help these wonderfully prepared students finish PC strong and with as little student debt as possible.” To be eligible to receive funding, students must: 1) have unmet financial need due to loss of state or other external scholarship and grant funding, or due to a financial emergency; 2) maintain full-time enrollment in an undergraduate degree program; and 3) be in good academic standing. Students receiving financial assistance may be required to attend a financial literacy course. Brad helps guide the state of Georgia’s needs-based scholarship program. Since he works with a needs-based scholarship program, Brad understands that some donors feel that they can’t make a difference because they don’t have the financial resources to endow a scholarship. “The BLUE Fund offers every donor, regardless of the size of their gift, the ability to help change the life of a Blue Hose,” he said. “Together, our collective giving retains deserving students. To understand the power of your gift, think about one of your classmates that never walked down the Plaza because life interrupted. “As a fellow student, what would you have given if you could have helped them stay in school?”

Booker Ingram Scholarship

ew, if any, have worked harder to achieve a more diverse and inclusive campus community than professor emeritus Dr. Booker Ingram. As the college’s first African-American professor, Ingram was a tireless advocate for building an environment at Presbyterian College that included, welcomed, and nurtured minority students and professors. At the end of a distinguished 33-year career in the political science department, Ingram retired not only triumphant as a mentor and teacher but also having achieved a significant career milestone as the College’s first director of diversity and inclusion. In honor of his retirement in Spring 2021, PC alumnus Douglas Welch ’95 established the Booker T. Ingram Multicultural Leadership and Civic Engagement Scholarship for students who “demonstrate academic achievement and leadership in diverse organizations, environments, and leadership capacity for civic engagement within the PC community.” The partial scholarship will be awarded to graduating high school students who have

demonstrated leadership in multicultural activities in their schools or communities and are active in civic organizations. Preferences will be given to students with financial need and/or to firstgeneration students. Welch, a former student of Ingram’s, said the scholarship pays tribute to a man who broke barriers and whose impact was felt by classmates in and out of the classroom. “At the time I was in college,” said Welch, “I did not appreciate how important his arrival to PC was. I do not think I understood what it meant to break barriers like the one Dr. Ingram broke. “In my entire life, I have never had to apply for a job or other position at an institution or company that has never hired someone who looked like me. That is a burden I do not have to bear. Because of Dr. Ingram, others following in his footsteps will not have to bear that burden either. Dr. Ingram took a risk when he left New Orleans to move to South Carolina to share his great intellect, enthusiasm, and knowledge with all of us. And for that, I am extremely grateful.”

Bob ’68 and Phyllis ’18(h) Staton, here, with Dr. and Mrs. Booker T. Ingram, commissioned a portrait of Dr. Ingram that has been placed in the lobby of Harrington Peachtree Hall.

New Fund Helps Underserved and Disadvantaged Students

PC School of Pharmacy Receives Generous Grant

n 2018, nearly three out of 10 PC students came from households with annual incomes of $50,000 or less. “The Religious Life office noticed an increase in acute financial stress among these students in 2019,” Perrin Tribble ’11, PC’s director of church relations, said. The financial burden often prevented students from buying academic materials they needed, like textbooks and online learning materials. Some students struggled purchasing hygiene items. Two years ago, GRACE began as a pilot program in response to the growing number of economically disadvantaged and underserved students at PC. A grant was applied for and was awarded that led to the formation of the GRACE Fund. Standing for Giving Resources & Achieving Community Equity, the GRACE Fund is an emergency response initiative for students facing acute financial insecurity. “The GRACE Fund is at the heart of the school motto and is an effort to increase retention rates and to make PC accessible for all students,” Tribble said. “The GRACE Fund is used to address and alleviate stress quickly for the students. Other resources and departments on campus also work together to help students create a sustainable academic future.” A board of representatives, including faculty members and staff members across campus, govern the fund. Faculty and staff members most often refer students who seem to have unmet needs. Through a referral and review process, the board determines the level of assistance each student needs. generous $90,000 grant from the BlueCross® BlueShield® of South Carolina Foundation has allowed the Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy’s community care pharmacy to make a needed change in “personnel.” With the grant, the PC Community Pharmacy replaced an obsolete dispensing robot with a refurbished Parata Max model that helps them meet the needs of hundreds of local patients. Patients whose needs are considerable. More than 20 percent of Laurens County residents and 30 percent of Clinton residents live below the poverty level. As an outreach to patients served by the county’s Good Shepherd Free Medical Clinic, the Community Care Pharmacy fills prescriptions at no cost to patients whose income is 200 percent below the poverty level and who cannot afford care because they have no government assistance or private insurance. “We are pleased to partner with Presbyterian College on this initiative to equip today’s students with the skills they need to provide critical health care to uninsured and economically disadvantaged patients in Laurens County now and into the future,” said Erika Kirby, the executive director of the BlueCross Blue Shield of South Carolina Foundation, an independent licensee of the BlueCross BlueShield Association.

A dispensing robot gives pharmacy staff considerably more time to spend with medically underserved patients, many of whom need individual attention to help them understand and manage their medications. The robot also provides volunteer students from the School of Pharmacy the opportunity to work with a piece of equipment many of them will use in their future practices. The robot also reduces manual dispensing errors and fills prescriptions 60 percent faster than a human being. It counts medications, places them in vials and caps and labels the vials for patients. Assistant professor of laboratory education Nancy Taylor, who is also the Community Care Pharmacy’s pharmacist-in-charge, honored her new “colleague” with a nickname—“Maxine.” “With Tish Clayton, our pharmacy technician, and our students, we’ve created an enjoyable atmosphere to work in,” she said. “We just think it’s fun to call the robot something other than ‘the robot.’” The main thing, Taylor said, is serving patients. “We were surprised and grateful that this will help us in our service to the community,” she said. “That is what it boils down to—helping us serve our community better.”

ob Williams’ parents loved music and the arts. To honor them, the 1962 alumnus gave generously to PC to help students pursue their love of music. In 2012, Williams established the John H. and Dorothy H. Williams Music Fund to support students majoring in one of the fine arts. Preference is given to music majors. Initially established as a bequest gift, in 2019, Williams decided that he wanted to begin funding the award so that he could witness, during his lifetime, the impact that the scholarship would have on young people. Jenna Seubarran ’21, of Greenville, S.C., was the first-ever recipient of the Williams Award. Music factored into her decision to attend PC. Seubarran began singing and playing the viola as a child and knew she wanted to study music in college. But she also wanted to study medicine. PC allowed her to do both. “The biggest thing about PC is that they allow the time in your schedule to do both of the things that you love and especially want to major in,” Seubarran said in a previous article in the PC Magazine. “I don't think there's been any overlap for me yet, in having to choose whether or not I need to take this biology class with this music class.” Last year, Williams, a Guardian of PC, passed away before he was able to meet the

first recipient of the John H. and Dorothy H. Williams Award. However, his legacy at Presbyterian College will live in perpetuity because of the $1.4 million estate gift he generously gave to support talented young students. Guardians of PC are those who have designated Presbyterian College as a beneficiary in their will or estate. Such gifts might include: • • • •

a bequest appreciated securities gifts of retirement accounts gifts of life insurance and/or charitable income gifts, such as charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder unitrusts, charitable remainder annuity trusts.

Seubarran, who majored in biology as well, says the combination prepared her for life after PC. “There are those stressful times,” she said, “but … I think about the fact that it’s enjoyable, and it’s going to lead to a degree and a bigger purpose in life. I try to hold onto that and the end-game aspect of it.” “Med school and any graduate school, in general, is tough business, so I feel like the classes at PC are tough enough to prepare me for what is to come next.”

Members of Guardians of PC have expressed their commitment to Presbyterian College through a very special and important form of financial support. These donors have named Presbyterian College as the beneficiary of a planned gift. Such gifts might include a bequest, appreciated securities, gifts of retirement accounts, gifts of life insurance and/or charitable income gifts, such as charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder unitrusts, charitable remainder annuity trusts. Membership involves no dues, obligations, or solicitations, but it does allow us to thank and recognize donors for the plans they have made, and it may inspire generosity in others. Guardians will receive a lapel pin or necklace charm bearing a specially designed PC thistle. Historically, The Order of the Thistle is bestowed on individuals who made an outstanding contribution to the life of Scotland, so we confer this badge of honor on friends and alumni of Presbyterian College who have made such a significant and lasting contribution to PC through their estate plans.

Loyal PC Alumnus Gives Largest Gift in College’s Division I History

P

resbyterian College received a generous gift of $500,000 from loyal supporter and alumnus Tom Free ’91. The gift has been given to support athletics initiatives and is the largest gift in the history of Division I athletics at PC. In the 2019 academic year, PC added men’s and women’s wrestling, acrobatics and tumbling, and competitive cheer. During the 2020-21 academic year, 406 student-athletes represented Presbyterian College in the classroom and on the playing fields and courts. Blue Hose teams averaged a 3.17 GPA, which was slightly higher than the average GPA of non-athletes. In addition to academic successes, two teams competed in postseason play. Men’s tennis and baseball both won their Big South Conference championships and competed in NCAA playoffs. Said Free, “Over the past several years,

PC has undergone a renaissance. I have watched as new programs and majors have been added to the College. Renovations and construction have taken place campus-wide, including a new residence facility complex. I chose to support athletics because, as alumni and friends, we need to strengthen our commitment to the current and future student-athletes and coaches. We must provide the tools needed for success. Our student-athletes are an integral part of PC’s current and future success.” Continued philanthropic support will provide opportunities to enhance existing and build new athletic facilities that are comparable to our NCAA Division I competition schools. In May, 2021, private philanthropic support and a grant from the City of Clinton provided funding for the installation of lights on the Blue Hose baseball field.

Women’s Lacrosse Receives Gifts for Meeting Room

T

he Blue Hose women’s lacrosse team has had to use several different spaces on campus for team meetings, film sessions and teambuilding activities. This has all changed thanks to generous donors. The P.E. classroom in the Templeton Center, the space in the Marby-Smith-Yonce Center, and the home locker room in the Yonce Field House are three of the spaces Coach Eric Clakeley and the team have gathered to prepare for games.

HUMBLING GIFTS FROM LACROSSE SUPPORTERS

A recent gift to the women’s lacrosse program has transformed a space in the Templeton Center into the Lacrosse Meeting Room. “Our athletes take pride in the work they do for our program,” said Eric Clakeley, head coach of the Blue Hose women’s lacrosse team. “Having

the lacrosse team meeting room as a result of the generosity of donors is humbling. “The program and I are incredibly grateful for these gifts allowing us to renovate the space into a state-of-the art meeting and film facility.”

THE NEW MEETING ROOM

The renovated meeting room is located in the lower classroom just outside the gym in the Templeton Center. The space will be used for pre-practice team meetings, film sessions, scouting reports and teambuilding activities when appropriate, according to Clakeley. When not in use by the women’s lacrosse team, the room’s features and layout were designed so the meeting room can also continue to serve as the athletic department’s conference room, an athletic event hospitality room, and a meeting room for other sports teams.

“ When PC supporters contribute to the College philanthropically, they are not only helping us meet the needs of our students, but they are inspiring them as well. ” —Anna-Bradley Schoenfeld, Office of Advancement

EVENTS Volunteer Leaders Conference

March 27, 2021 Members of all of our volunteer leader groups came together (via Zoom) on March 27th to hear from Dr. Matt vandenBerg and other College leaders to learn more about PC and the great things happening here. The leadership groups included the Alumni Board, Scotsman Club Board, African-American Alumni Council, Parent and Family Council, ROTC Alumni Council, Young Alumni Council, and Class Agents. These leaders are an integral part of our efforts to connect members of our extended PC family to one another and to the College. Even though we were not able to be in person, we had a great turnout and engaging event.

March 24, 2021 Unable to get the new president on the road due to COVID, we held six virtual events to give the PC alumni, parents, students, and friends the opportunity to meet and hear from Dr. Matt vandenBerg. These events were staged in the library of our founder, Dr. William Plumer Jacobs, in the Thomason Library’s Arnold Archives. These events were wellattended and offered the opportunity

EVENTS During the fall of 2020 and the early spring of 2021, we looked for interesting ways to engage our alumni and friends. Fortunately, this past summer, we were able to have a couple of in-person events— and it was fantastic to see everyone. Here is a look at some of those events.

Coaches Caravan

Summer, 2021 The Scotsman Club hosted several Coaches Caravans this past summer, providing our Blue Hose fans the opportunity to meet new football Head Coach Kevin Kelley, as well as our other head coaches— Elton Pollock ’95 (baseball) Alaura Sharp (women’s basketball), Quinton Ferrell ’07 (men’s basketball), Eric Clakeley (lacrosse), Joel Roberts ’17 (women’s tennis), Jonathan Potter (men’s soccer), Brian Purcell ’87 (women’s soccer), and Anne Marie Covar (women’s golf). Our stops on this tour were in Greenville, Charlotte, and Columbia.

Baseball Watch Parties

June 4, 2021 With the exciting Big South Conference Championship win by our Blue Hose Baseball team, we jumped into action to pull together Alumni and Friends Watch parties in Clinton, Greenville and Columbia. Blue Hose fans joined together to cheer on the Blue Hose in their first NCAA Tournament appearance, as they took on Vanderbilt in the Nashville Region of the 2021 NCAA Baseball Tournament. We also pulled together a sendoff party at the host hotel in Nashville, attended by parents, friends, and alumni, as the Blue Hose loaded the bus to head off to Hawkins Field.

Volleyball Graduate Leads, Serves during Her Time as a Blue Hose

T

rinity Williams ’21, of Anderson, S.C., was destined to succeed as a student-athlete at PC. She comes from a family of student-athletes. Her father, Dr. Cory Williams, played basketball at Southern Wesleyan University, while her mother, Andrea, played volleyball and basketball at SWU. Trinity’s sister LaChrista played volleyball at Claflin University, and her sister Cortney played basketball at North Greenville University and Savannah State University. When it was her time to choose a college, Trinity chose PC for a number of reasons. For starters, she fell in love with the family atmosphere at PC, and many PC graduates told her about the career opportunities that would be available to her after she graduated. Clinton provided a small-town feel that made her feel at home, and she felt like a part of the Blue Hose volleyball team from the beginning. “I chose PC because I got along well with the team and the coach,”Trinity said. Trinity was drawn to PC’s academics too. “I knew Presbyterian College was the right choice after meeting a few professors within the political science department, such as Dr. McAdams and Dr. Lance, on my tour,” she said. “Their passion for poli-sci really got me excited about joining the department as a student at PC.” Trinity went on to major in political science and minor in English and pre-law studies. She excelled inside the classroom and capitalized on opportunities

outside the classroom. Trinity interned with the Greenville, S.C., chapter of the NAACP during the summer of 2020. The experience inspired her to begin a student chapter at PC. “After working as a research intern, I fell in love with their advocacy and call for change,” she said. “I believed PC needed a chapter on campus to help unify the campus in its call for advocacy.” For all of her efforts and achievements as an undergraduate, Trinity was nominated for the 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. The award “recognizes graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their NCAA eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers,” according to the NCAA. Trinity says the people she met at PC made her time as a Blue Hose special. “I made so many great friends and met so many great people while at PC,” Trinity said. “I especially loved my professors, whether they were from the English department, political science department, history department, or biology department. “What is great about PC is that they have professors who really want you to succeed in anything you do.” Trinity received the Bonnie Blue

Scholarship as a student and has already begun giving back to PC. She made her first gift to her alma mater during the senior giving campaign this past spring. “I wanted to give back because PC has given me so much,” Trinity said. “I’m grateful for the lessons I’ve learned and the people I’ve met while at PC. “I have developed many skills while being a student at PC, but the biggest lesson PC has taught me is to be relentless in my passion for serving others.” ANNUAL REPORT

ne hundred and forty-seven years ago, Presbyterian College’s founder William Plumer Jacobs set forth a plan to establish a college and knew that faith and philanthropy would be the pillars of success and sustainability. I have at last set my heart on a plan, the complete fulfillment of which I desire to commemorate my twentieth anniversary at Clinton. It is nothing more nor less than the establishment of a College at Clinton. It will take a vast outlay of time and money but it can be done and, God willing, it shall be done. I have been thus explicit because I have hereby resolved to establish a college in the town of Clinton.” —William Plumer Jacobs, 1874 2018 saw PC’s first giving day take place inspired by the 1874 diary entry of William Plumer Jacobs.

Since that day, a new tradition has arisen and on May 26, 2021 PC’s 4th Annual Giving Day joined together a loyal community to raise over one million dollars in one day. Thanks to you and more than 1300 donors, one 24-hour time frame has impacted many current students and our beloved campus. Alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents and friends supported PC with their time, money, and social media presence. Many challenges and matching gifts are a part of Giving Day to engage the PC community. Throughout the day donors are encouraged to make their gift, participate in the various challenges and promote PC by sharing why they give on social media. Fritz Whittemore ’03, the early bird challenge winner had this to say when asked about Giving Day, “I give on Giving Day (and throughout the year) so that current and future students can continue to benefit from the premium collegiate experience that I received. Because of generous donors before me, I was able to attend PC and I am forever grateful. Also, I love the socks!” We are thankful for those who join us annually and also those who made their first gift this past May. We look forward to continuing this tradition as well as adding new and exciting challenges to this year’s 5th Annual Giving Day in May of 2022.

NEW ENDOWMENTS for fiscal year 2021 Harold Nichols '89 Scholarship Established by a close personal friend and former student-athlete Gordon Glaspey ’83 to honor former Blue Hose football player, Harold Nichols who faithfully served his alma mater as an assistant football coach, head football coach, and as assistant athletics director for development. The need-based scholarship provides financial support to students with preference to those reporting as first-generation.

Bonnie D. Coward '70 Endowed Scholarship Established by Bonnie Dietz Coward ’70 to provide need-based scholarship support to students who matriculate from Aiken County or Charleston County, South Carolina. Bonnie, a 1970 PC graduate, wanted to leave a legacy for her children and grandchildren by supporting student aid.

Harold P. Hope, Jr. '63 Family Scholarship Endowment Established by Harold P. Hope, III to honor his parents, Dr. and Mrs. Harold P. (Jane) Hope, Jr. A former Blue Hose tennis player, Dr. Hope served on the PC Board of Trustees from 1988-1996. Harold and Jane have had several family members attend and graduate from Presbyterian College, including The Reverend Kenneth Hamilton ’32, Robert Hope ’69, and Charlie Jordan ’65. The scholarship will provide support to students who are in good academic and social standing. Awards will be based on merit and/or demonstrated financial need.

Philip T. Bell '19 Endowed Scholarship This Scholarship, established by current Secretary of the Presbyterian College Board of Trustees, Louise R. Slater, provides need-based financial support to students who identify as first-generation and/or minority. Funds from the Scholarship are used for tuition, room and board, books, travel, internships, and any other opportunities that provide firstgeneration and/or minority students educational opportunities both inside and outside the traditional classroom. The Scholarship was established as a result of the commitment that Louise R. Slater and Philip T. Bell have to both Presbyterian College and young people who may not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the many facets of a liberal arts education. The gift was also given to honor Bob and Phyllis Staton on their retirement.

Holbrook W. '70 and Susan L. Raynal Endowed Scholarship This endowment has been established by Holbrook '70 and Susan Raynal ‘21(h) to honor retiring president Robert E. "Bob" '68 and First Lady Phyllis B. '18(h) Staton. Holbrook and Bob were PC roommates and the couples became very close friends during the Staton's tenure at Presbyterian College. Dr. Raynal currently serves on the PC Board of Trustees. The Raynal’s son, Andrew is a 2003 graduate of PC. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide need-based support to first-generation college students.

Endowment Honoring Elizabeth Grier '23 This endowment has been established by Paul and Susan Grier, PC parents, to honor their daughter, Elizabeth. The scholarship is the first one established under the new Parent and Family Philanthropy program which gives parents and/or family members an avenue to provide a lasting legacy as a gift to their graduate. Upon Elizabeth’s graduation from PC, she will create the official name and criteria for the endowed scholarship given in her honor.

Booker T. Ingram Multicultural Leadership and Civic Engagement Scholarship Established by colleagues, friends and former students to honor Booker T. Ingram and to acknowledge his dedication to Presbyterian College and his perseverance and accomplishments as the first Black professor at PC. Dr. Ingram served the College as a professor and as its first Director of Diversity and Inclusion. The scholarship’s official name and criteria are being established by Dr. Ingram, and will be awarded beginning in the 2022-23 academic year.

The Robert E. '68 and Phyllis B. '18(h) Staton Family Scholarship Fund Established by trustees and friends to honor Bob and Phyllis Staton and to thank them for their selfless service to PC during their tenure as President and First Lady from July 2015-December 2020. The purpose of the Endowment is to provide scholarship support to students enrolled full-time at Presbyterian College with preference given to first generation students. ANNUAL REPORT | 41
