PLC acknowledges traditional custodians on the lands of Noongar Nation, where for thousands of years this land was nurtured and sustained by the strengths, courage, and wisdom of the Noongar people. We recognise their continuing connection to this Boodja and pay respects to their elders and leaders, past, present, and future.
Cate Begbie Welcome to the 25th PLC Open Garden Day. PLC Open Garden Day is a highlight of the PLC calendar where we see our school community come together to share this amazing day with visitors from far and wide. We are delighted to present five wonderful gardens, one of which took part in the very first PLC Open Garden Day in 1998. I would like to sincerely thank the garden owners who have generously agreed to support PLC and share their gardens with the broader community.

An event like this would not be possible without our very supportive parent and staff community. All involved have dedicated hours of their time to ensure that the event is enjoyable for attendees and volunteers alike. I would like to personally thank everyone who has contributed to this magnificent day, with special thanks to our Open Garden Day Organising Committee. Our students are delighted to have the opportunity to perform and participate today and have been working hard to ensure the day will be special for all guests. I hope you enjoy wandering through the beautiful gardens, the extensive markets, diverse range of performances and exhibitions as well as the warm PLC hospitality. Warm regards, Cate Begbie

Special Thanks Mike George Mike George has been our dedicated garden guru for the past 25 PLC Open Garden Days. Mike has watched the gardens of Peppermint Grove mature and develop over the years and provides an invaluable wealth of knowledge. Mike has a vast and varied history spanning agriculture, education, and horticulture. Mike studied Agricultural Science at Muresk and later Education at UWA. Mike worked for many years teaching agriculture in Harvey and Denmark and was instrumental in developing the Mogumber Agricultural Mission School south of Moora in the early 1960s. Following his passion for horticulture, Mike and his wife Helen opened Dalkieth Garden Centre on Waratah Avenue in the 1980s.
Special Thanks
Mike is the uncle of two PLC Old Collegians and has been an avid supporter of PLC for more than 30 years.

Chirritta This garden is a masterpiece in blending hard landscaping on a sloping river-front block of land with minimal plant varieties to complement the striking residence. Alongside a driveway lined with magnolias and trimmed star jasmine, a multi-level stairway with beautiful white crepe myrtle, topiarised Japanese box and star jasmine, leads one to an upper level and the house entrance where mature lime trees cover the walls.
56 The Esplanade
56 The Esplanade
Wander across sweeping lawns where trimmed murraya and Japanese box abound and down a side path to arrive at a secluded garden with ficus-covered walls and water features. The highlight is the koi aquarium where one is mesmerised with beautiful multi-coloured fish. White wisteria covers walls and pergolas in this tranquil setting. When all this garden blooms in the future a kaleidoscope of white will prevail.

(Right) Augustus Sanford Keats Roe with his first wife Mary nee Newman, and sons Jack (back), and Douglas (front), c1905. Courtesy Peppermint Grove, by Robert Pascoe.
Douglas, a shipping clerk, served four days at Gallipoli in August 1915 but was invalided home after shooting himself in the foot. In 1925, he married Stella Smith. He served with the Naval Reserve during WWII, and died in 1977, aged 83.
He married Mary Newman in 1888 and they settled in Roebourne (named for his father), where he served as district magistrate. Their sons Jack and Douglas were born in 1889 and 1895.
Jack went into law. In mid-1916 he enlisted in WWI and, on discharge in 1919, joined his father’s law firm.
In 1898, the family returned to Perth, where Roe was appointed police magistrate. Architects Olson and Sanders built Chirritta, named for a sheep station near Roebourne, and the Roes were in residence before the end of 1898. In the boatshed opposite, was their launch, Chirritta, and it was on a regular trip to Carnac Island in August 1908 that Mary Roe was tragically killed (see QR code for more). In Victoria in March 1910, Roe (58) married a second time, to Elizabeth Cook (40).
Jack inherited Chirritta when Roe died in 1921. In 1923, he married Maimie McGillivray, and practised law until he died in 1950, aged 61.
56 The Esplanade
Augustus Roe, youngest son of John Septimus Roe, first practised law in 1873 but soon switched to pearling in the north-west. In the late 1870s he became a master mariner, trading in the Dutch East Indies.
Maimie later sold Chirritta to Denis and Ann Cullity, who extended the home sympathetically when necessary, most recently in 2007. When they sold it in 2013, after 52 years in residence, it was purportedly Perth’s most expensive home. The current owners began five years of renovations in 2015. It is now a private residence.

48A View Street This garden has been transformed in a few short years from a “wasteland” to the wonderful balance of trees, shrubs, and underplanting you see today. The dominant trees as you enter – magnolias, flowering pears, and tipuana, set off borders of irises, star jasmine, agaves, salvias, echium, and stattice. The northern fence line with its white Datura (angel trumpet), philodendrons, New Zealand rock lilies, and the lovely elkhorn fern are complemented with planted urns – lavenders, geraniums, and sculptures – a most welcoming front garden. The back garden has also been developed with trees, shrubs, and clumping perennials. Look for the crepe myrtles, hydrangeas, irises, star jasmine, elm trees, and the majestic tipuana. The water features add more interest.

Len Liddell, 1918 Dux of Scotch College, was a dental surgeon. Later, he became Director of the Perth Dental Hospital, and the Victoria Park annex was named in his honour. New Zealand-born Jean Garton Smith attended Perth College, after which she travelled abroad with her mother. Returning in 1937, she stayed with her sister Ella Hodge, in Irvine Street, with their other sister, Kathleen Howitt, next door. Len and Jean got engaged in 1940 and, more than ten years earlier than records reflect, 48A View Street was built. Married as soon as it was complete, they had no children, but shared a lifelong love for travel. They sold their home in the early 1960s. Len (70) died in 1974. Jean remarried in the 1980s and died in 1998, aged 87. Augustus ‘Gus’ Creightmore, born in 1910, graduated from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects in Perth in 1933. In 1935, he married Isobel Goldstein, and their twin daughters both came to PLC.
48A View Street

Due to the wartime lack of building materials and the downturn in demand for domestic architecture, Gus worked supplying khaki uniforms to the army. Intending to return to architecture, instead he died aged just 39, in 1949. Despite his brief architectural career, Creightmore left a significant legacy, and his rare designs are very highly regarded. This particular home was long thought to have been built in the 1950s, but our historian, Shannon Lovelady, found evidence it was designed and built by Creightmore in 1940. This distinguishes the importance of this house in both architectural history and within Peppermint Grove. The current owners loved and bought this home in 2018. They have since extensively renovated and remodelled, breathing new life into this very special old home, and they are delighted with its newly-discovered significance.

42A View Street Wandering in a paradise of colour. We have been privileged to wander these gardens for the 25 years of PLC Open Garden Days. Wander under beautiful trees with shrubberies of camellias, azaleas, hibiscus, and the magnificent roses everywhere, past perennial daisies, hollyhocks, alstromeria, rock roses, day lilies, past wonderful plantings of delphiniums, salvias, foxgloves, lobelia, pansies, and violas with scattered silver/grey artichokes, and wormwood. Along paths strewn with baskets, pots, and planters of impatiens, violas, petunias, to yet more colour – past herb gardens of incredible variety and interest.

42A View Street George Bolton, accountant for (Alexander) Forrest Emanuel & Co, was among the first shrewd buyers of Peppermint Grove land released by the (Alexander) Forrest, Crossland, Leake syndicate. He built Ardamine House, a romantic, Federation Queen Annestyle bungalow, in 1897, and he and his wife Ellen (nee Keane) moved in in 1898. George, however, had a drinking problem. In May 1901, he went to England ‘for his health’, but Alexander Forrest died in June. By the time George returned in August, his job had gone. Drinking heavily, re-mortgaged and, to halt impending financial disaster, some of his family moved to declare him a lunatic. He turned on them and in September 1902, evicted Ellen and the rest of his family, and sold everything. Ellen immediately sued for separation, and George left for England where he died in February 1904, aged just 54. Ellen was
taken in by her grown children, and outlived George by 43 years. Ardamine House was tenanted until attorney Frederick Burt and his wife Gladys (nee MacMurtrie) bought it in 1908. They renamed it Repton, after Fred’s school in Derbyshire, England. During WWI with Fred away at war, Gladys’ parents, William and Emily, moved in, naming their section Kalimna. Fred and Gladys left Repton in around 1927 and the home was re-amalgamated under the newer name. Emily died in 1931 and William in 1933, after which Jessie and Gilbert Smith, a wool valuer, bought Kalimna. When their son, Peter, married, they also divided the home in two. After Jessie died in 1964 the home was re-amalgamated and the poultry run subdivided and sold; a modern home built on it. Peter and Kathleen Smith sold to the current owners in 1984 who, a few years later, bought the block at the rear, demolished the modern house, and built their tennis court.

3A View Street Llangefni
Location of The Stables Café open 9.00 am - 2.00 pm. The front garden of Llangefni will be transformed into The Stables Café where patrons can enjoy delicious homemade cakes, sandwiches, tea and coffee from 9.00 am. The northern weatherboard wing of this house was built in 1903 by renowned architect Charles Lancelot Oldham. It was the stables servicing Unalla, and the original flooring remains intact.
3A View Street
The land on which this house now sits was subdivided from Unalla in 1939 by the widowed Bessie Rischbieth, who gifted it to her nephew William Evans and his wife Nellie ‘Flower’ Southwood. The Rischbieths had no children, but Bessie was very close to her younger sister Olive Evans (nee Earle), and their children, who lived nearby at Glan-yr-Afon (Welsh for ‘Banks of the River’) at the southern end of The Esplanade.
16
William Evans contracted well-known architect Marshall Waller Clifton to convert the stables into a home, which he completed in his signature Spanish style in 1940. William and Nellie subsequently continued the Welsh theme and named their home Llangefni, after a town in Anglesea, North Wales. There they raised their three sons, who all came to PLC for kindergarten, and happily lived in their home for the next 50 years. The Evans’ sold their home to PLC in 1992 and it subsequently became a general staff residence. The home received a gentle internal renovation in 2021, and is now home to our Director of Boarding.
Youth Action for Wildlife Located in The Stables Café garden Youth Action for Wildlife is a group of high school students campaigning to stop the use of Second Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs). Their mission is to educate the public on their detrimental effects on our wildlife and pets and to encourage the use of alternative methods of rodent control. youthactionforwildlife.com
The sweeping lawns of this attractive garden have been greatly extended since our last visit. Garden beds line the entirety of the lawns with shrubs including viburnums, acalypha (Fijian fire bush), hibiscus, raphiolepis (Indian hawthorn), red leaf euphorbia, and many many beautiful roses.

The gnarled ancient trunks of the frangipannis are a great feature. Seek out the many perennial plants – silver wormwood, day lilies, marguerite daisies, irises, New Zealand rock lilies, colourful geraniums, stattice – the list goes on and on. As with many of today’s gardens, the growing use of succulents with their myriad of leaf shapes and colours can also be seen. We have been privileged to visit this garden many times since PLC commenced the Open Garden Day 25 years ago. A big thank you to Jill and Hugh. Ask a question to expert horticulturist David Griffiths who will be in this garden from 10.30 am to 11.30 am.

18 View Street Fence lines with agapanthus, standard lillypilly, and star jasmine welcome you to a wonderful Peppermint Grove house. Along a winding path and tranquil water feature are scattered trees including jacaranda, prunus, weeping mulberry and Chinese elm. Dense underplantings of acanthus, irises, russelia, strappy liriope, and agapanthus abound. The front of the house is lined with camellias and azaleas while scattered urns punctuate various corners of the garden.
18 View Street
A side path with flowering pear trees, camellias, hydrangeas, and clivea lilies leads one to a tennis court and pool area. Wonderful trees are abundant – crepe myrtles, weeping mulberry, olive trees, frangipannis, and an ancient eucalypt in the far corner.

Veroslah, 18 View Street, home of Sydney and Jessie Lodge, c1924. Courtesy Tim Baker.
This home was built in c1905 for Sydney Lodge, manager of Fremantle merchants G Wood, Son & Co (later Anchor Foods), his wife Jessie (nee Backhouse), and their three children. They named their home Veroslah, which had been lost over time, but was rediscovered by our Historian, and reinstated by the owners in 2017. A tennis court fronted View Street to the south, beside which stood a beautiful lattice shade house under a mature jacaranda tree. There was a also mulberry tree, a fig tree, vegetable gardens and rudimentary quarters for the resident gardener. Soon after Sydney’s death in 1928, Jessie sold the home to accountant Horace Lissiman and his wife Effie (nee Rae), who renamed the home Lismear and happily raised five children there. Their daughters Marjorie, Kay, and Florence, went to PLC and their sons, James and Keith, to Scotch. With such a crowd, the Lissiman’s house was where all the youngsters gathered for tennis parties, every Saturday afternoon. In 1940, the 15m tall windmill was removed, and the tennis court sold to Judge John Hale, whose wife Joan (nee Blackall) came to PLC from 1917, and their daughter Sally, followed in 1940. The house Judge Hale built on it was designed by renowned architect Gus Creightmore, and still stands.
In 1950, with all of their children having left home, the Lissimans actually swapped houses with the next owner, Geoffrey Baker. The Lissimans moved into the Baker’s newly-built, slightly smaller house in Colin Street, Dalkeith, and Geoffrey and his wife Marie (nee Moir) moved into 18 View Street with no money changing hands. Geoffrey was one of the ‘Sons’ in the well-known WA refrigeration and airconditioning firm A J Baker & Sons. The Bakers immediately removed the vegetable gardens and established a new tennis court (partly over the top of an old air raid shelter), in its current location. Tennis balls are said make a distinctive ‘thunk’ when they hit the old shelter!
18 View Street
Veroslah, Lismear
In 1959, the home was bought by prominent realtor Justin Seward and his wife Pauline nee Dwyer. During their ownership significant additions were made to accommodate their growing brood of what would become seven children. In 1989, Justin and Pauline sold to Lindsay Brady and moved to a smaller home at 23 View Street. The current owners, since 1994, have extensively and sympathetically renovated and extended their home, with a seamless join between old and new.
