Wow! What a year it has been, to have gotten to this stage is a major achievement...
Travelling through this year’s journey and getting to this stage is really an accomplishment…

The 2024 Kookaburra’s theme is based on a modern travel diary. We chose this as our theme as it symbolises our travels through our years in PLC and our future travels outside of high school for this year’s Year 12s.

Year 12s, may this Kookaburra serve as one of the first life-changing journeys completed, especially seeing that in the past few years, we haven’t had many opportunities for travel. We hope this encourages you to try new things and explore the world around you.

To the Year 6s graduating into the Senior School, we hope this opportunity allows you to leave the nest and spread your wings to start, what was for us, some of the most memorable years of our lives so far.

As we progress through the year, we’ve travelled to destinations such as the swimming carnival, cross-country, athletics, and Arts Day. These events have been great parts of our journey, and so memorable from our years at PLC.

We have aimed to make this Kookaburra a visual and written account of your adventures and a place to capture your thoughts, feelings and experiences during your travels throughout the year, and act as a tangible keepsake that you can cherish for years to come.

This year also marks a special milestone at PLC; the 50th anniversary of Arts Day! Being one of the most fun and exciting days in the year, we wanted to uphold its memory and

acknowledge the remarkable amount of work the Year 12s, and everyone else, put in each year to make it special. We hope future Arts Days will continue to live up to its legacy.

We, the Kookaburra Editors, have been close collaborators and friends since we first met in (Kookaburra supervisor) Ms Freel’s Year 10 Media class, and have worked together ever since despite going on separate academic pathways, aka ATAR and IB. We have both really enjoyed this experience as it has helped us to grow and expand on our passions, as well as bringing us closer together in terms of friendship and teamwork. We hope the 2025 editors have the same experience, as it will be one we will cherish for years to come.

Of course, we could not have done this without the much appreciated help and guidance from Ms Gemma Freel who has shown much dedication to the Kookaburra over the years and has continued to do so, which has helped us greatly and allowed this publication to be the best it can be.

We hope this publication will serve as a memory for the journey we have had together and inspired you to go out into the world and make a difference. Enjoy!

Mika and Zara (aka, the Kookaburra Editors)

PRINCIPAL’S Report

1. What have been your highlights from 2024?

Every year has new highlights, however I have loved Arts Day (again), getting to know the Year 10s I went to Ningaloo with (again), chatting to Old Collegian Barbara Baird about her life and the work she has done to rejuvenate her property at the Melbourne Reunion. Overall, and every year, I really enjoy watching the students grow and develop into the incredible Year 12s we see.

2. What do you think defines a PLC student?

I love that PLC students are authentic and brave. Some of them don’t think they are brave, but I watch them push through their fear and achieve incredible things that they didn’t think were possible. I love that PLC girls challenge each other to achieve, and then will cheer each other on when they do. I love that our students support each other’s attempts – it’s the shared journey to be brave enough to try that impresses me so much.

3. How do you imagine PLC might evolve or stay the same in the future?

One of our core pillars is that Our Past Drives Us Forward. PLC has always evolved and been brave in how we embrace change – being the first school to provide students laptops more than 30 years ago was incredibly courageous at the time. PLC will continue to support the changing needs of students’ education. I am excited that our students have the opportunity to learn to fly from next year!

4. Who do you most admire and why?

I have always admired my grandmother. She had a great influence on me as a teenager and always challenged and inspired me to be a better person, and encouraged me to never give up. My grandmother didn’t have many opportunities to continue her education after school or to have a career, and she really encouraged me to pursue my passion for education and to have career aspirations.

5. Tell us about any memorable or defining moments from when you were at school.

My Maths teacher was Mr O’Brien, who is responsible for me understanding the incredible impact a single inspiring teacher can have. Before I was in his class I thought I was terrible at Maths. He helped me believe in myself, believe that I could do Maths, and in the end he was right – I received excellent final grades. I am still grateful for the impact that he had on me.

Friends SCHOOLLeaders

What accomplishments are you most proud of from your time at PLC?

In May this year, we organised for the 2024 student council to fundraise and participate in the Mother’s Day Classic Run for the Breast Cancer Foundation. Whilst lavishly dressed in hot pink (tutus, leg warmers, bike shorts and all), not only did we make wholesome memories walking the 5km trail, but we also contributed to a charitable organisation and made history within a small group of the PLC community.

In what ways do you feel you’ve made a difference to the school community?

We can only hope that throughout this year we have reminded all students that school is not just about schoolwork, but it’s also about making memories and embracing experiences with your peers around you. Rather than approaching each school day with the expectation of 100% stress and 0% fun, we hope to have encouraged everyone to try to find the good in even the smallest things. Whether it be meeting someone new in VTG or experiencing a podium-finishing Kahoot, there are always plenty of opportunities to share a smile with the people around you.

How has being a prefect helped you to grow personally and professionally?

Being a prefect has taught us the true importance of aspiring to be the best version of ourselves so we can become a role model for younger students, and it has also definitely taught us the practicality of sticky notes, weekly schedules, and to-do lists! Prefecture has also helped us to gain the appreciation that the success of a group of people, school or otherwise, cannot be defined by the actions of one or two individuals. It should instead be celebrated for its ability to foster a culture and community that thrives because of the support each member offers one another.

Tell us about a memorable moment from your time at PLC and/or in your roles as prefects.

Although it was the beginning of our long journey as leaders this year, the Prefect Retreat was definitely a defining moment. Not only were we able to refine our leadership styles and come to understand the mechanics of a Council Meeting, we also got to understand and bond with the girls that would be our rocks as Council Members, and friends, for the next 12 months.

What’s your advice for future prefects?

SENIORSchool

What have been your most memorable moments from this year?

There are so many memorable moments from 2024, but a highlight would have to be Arts Day. This year the 50th anniversary celebrations made the day even more special. Arts Day features not only amazing performances by our students, but what I love the most is that everyone has a go and involves themselves in something for the day. What a great show of House spirit.

What do you find most inspiring about your role as Head of SS?

The most inspiring part of my role would have to be the students. I am amazed at how inclusive, supportive, and determined they are. My favourite thing is when students stop by my office and let me know about their

RebeccaWatts

What plans or hopes do you have for the Senior School in 2025 and beyond?

This year has seen the introduction of the Vertical House Tutor Group system. While it is early days at the moment, I would love to focus on developing this programme further. I think our younger students having the guidance and mentoring from the older students will make their experience at PLC even more special.

Where and how do you like to find moments to relax during the school day?

My days are usually very busy, so I like to start the day chatting to the Pastoral and Academic Care team. We have a great team in place and I feel lucky to work with such dedicated professionals. I also like to find time at lunchtime to chat with students and find that really is the highlight of my day.

What’s your favourite food and why do you love it?

I have Polish heritage and one of my favourite foods are pierogis. They are little dumplings and my favourite filling would be cheese and potato. Absolutely delicious.

What are some of the most memorable moments for you during 2024?

The Year 6 OEP Kayaking along the Busselton shore was very memorable. I had the chance to chat with our Year 6 girls and get to know them more. The Swimming Carnival War Cries were truly spectacular, showcasing the genuine spirit of our Junior School. I always look forward to attending the Winter Concert and the IPSHA Performance, and I am constantly amazed by the talent of our choirs and inspired by the dedication of our music staff here at PLC. Two of the most exciting days of the year for me are the Festival of Science, which is filled with engaging STEM activities, and Celebrating the ARTS with Grandparents and Special Friends. These days are incredibly important as they allow us to share our learning with the wider community.

What do you find most inspiring about your role as Head of JS?

The opportunity to engage with a diverse and dynamic group of individuals at PLC. I find it fascinating to observe our youngest students as they learn routines and develop social skills in Pre-Kindergarten, and equally enriching to chat in thought-provoking discussions with our Junior School leaders. Each day I enjoy working alongside our dedicated team of teachers as we strive to innovate and improve everything we do in the Junior School. I also find great joy in helping new families feel welcomed and integrated into our community as I strive to build relationships with parents and families. It’s wonderful to hear new students and families say things like ‘I love it here’ or ‘It feels like we have been here forever.’

Geraldine Drabble

What plans or hopes do you have for the Junior School in 2025 and beyond?

I’m thrilled about the upcoming development of our new outdoor learning area. I’m eager to see our students embrace this space as risk-takers, exploring a variety of opportunities to extend their learning outside.

I’m also excited to strategically plan our PYP Units of Inquiry and explore ways to deepen our learning. Our teachers are diligently reviewing all Units of Inquiry from PK to Year 6, collaborating with Nicole Dyson from Future Anything to elevate our inquiry-based learning.

Where and how do you like to find moments to relax during the school day?

At the start of the day, I enjoy stepping out to the slip-way to greet everyone as they begin to arrive. I also take pleasure in visiting classrooms at the beginning or end of the day to see what different classes are up to.

However, the highlight of my day is lunchtime. I really enjoy being outside and spending time with the children in the playground.

What’s your favourite film from your childhood, and why?

I absolutely loved the movie The Man from Snowy River when I was young. I remember going to the cinema and can vividly recall how loud the music was and I thought the Snowy Mountains and the brumby horses were spectacular.

BAIRD House Captain Report

In what ways has being a House Captain helped you to grow personally and as a leader?

Being a House Captain has taught me that every girl has the potential to do amazing things. No two people are the same, and I think that’s the beauty of it. Everyone has a different set of skills and works in different ways. As a leader, I have learned that you should never be afraid to ask for help. When you work as a team, you have the incredible opportunity to bounce off each other’s ideas. By communicating freely with others, you can learn more about them and yourself. Knowing the smallest things about someone can help put them in a situation where they can thrive and achieve their goals. The Baird girls have taught me to always radiate positivity, to never be afraid to look through someone else’s perspective, and to always have an optimistic outlook.

What accomplishments are you most proud of from your time as House Captain?

In my time as House Captain, I am most proud of the long-lasting memories and relationships I have seen made. I’ve watched girls in Year 7 come out of their shells and adjust to life in big school. I’ve been lucky enough to see friendships form across year groups, Year 8s with Year 10s, Year 9s with Year 11s, Year 7s with Year 12s and every combination in between. To me, Baird has always been like a little orange family. This year, our competitive spirit, joyous laughter, and everlasting smiles

JessicaNixon

spoke louder than ever. The memories I have made this year will last a lifetime, and I’m so proud of all the girls for everything they do.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?

I hope to leave behind the legacy of a fun-loving, approachable, positive, smiley girl who always tried her best and gave it her all. My mum and my sister are big inspirations of mine, and they were both in Baird. Knowing they wore the same orange as I do made me always try my hardest to pave the best path for everyone else.

What parting words do you have for your House?

Girls, you should all be so proud of how you have gone about this year. I get so much joy from seeing you at Athletics, Swimming, Cross Country, Arts Day, Debating, Academics, and even just in the hallways, always with the biggest smiles on your faces. You are all amazing and capable of achieving great things, so stop at nothing to find your motivation and accomplish your goals.

If you could have any superpower for a day, what would you choose and how would you use it?

If I had a superpower, it would be to grant people’s wishes. I would love being able to make someone’s day a little bit better, whether that be fulfilling a lifelong dream or getting a silly gift to make someone smile.

CARMICHAEL House Captain Report

In what ways has being a House Captain helped you to grow personally and as a leader?

Having the opportunity of being House Captain has allowed me to learn the importance of community, organisation, and consideration, which are all qualities that have helped me grow personally and as a leader. During my time as House Captain, putting my House mates first was something I endeavoured to do, and it has taught me how important listening to others is. Being a leader does not mean that you work alone, collaboration is key and Carmichael’s team effort has been amazing.

What accomplishments are you most proud of from your time as House Captain?

Bringing my House closer together is what I am most proud of as House Captain. Seeing everyone in Carmichael bonding across different year groups, especially during Vertical House Tutor Group. Seeing girls in different year groups chatting and having a laugh with each other during House Dance practise, at sports carnivals and during VTG, has been so rewarding. Creating a comfortable, fun and teamspirited environment within Carmichael was something I strived towards creating at the start of being House Captain. Watching Carmichael girls across all year groups feeling comfortable to talk to each other, come together to support each other, have fun and share their ideas is definitely an accomplishment I am most proud of.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?

I hope to leave behind a strong feeling of unity, friendships, and a supportive culture. Having fun, giving everything you possibly can a go and not taking yourself too seriously all the time. I hope that I have been a positive role model to my House, and that I have led by example. I wish to leave behind a legacy where Carmichael is more cohesive and bonded, where girls remember me for my positivity and charisma and translate it into their own attitudes and relationships within the House.

What parting words do you have for your House?

To keep on supporting each other and to have fun! The girls in our Carmichael family will be with you through your whole high school experience and will go through similar experiences as you, so remember that you are all there to support and encourage each other. Let the Carmichael community be a safe space to be yourself, and amongst some of the chaos high school may bring you, to have fun! Make the most of the opportunities given to you, whether that be trying a new event at a sports carnival, or putting your hand up for Inter-House Debating, make the absolute most of it!

If you could meet any historical figure and have a conversation with them, who would it be and what would you ask?

I would want to meet Marie Antoinette to ask her if I pulled off my Year 11 Free Dress Day costume of her!

FERGUSON

House Captain Report

In what ways has being a House Captain helped you to grow personally and as a leader?

I have learned it is important to delegate to the people around you and be able to ask for help. Our House is incredibly talented, and I was lucky to have the help of my fellow Year 12s to stand with me throughout the whole year. I also realised it was important to be a role model for the younger years because I remember always looking up to the older girls and wanting to be like them.

What accomplishments are you most proud of from your time as House Captain?

Fergo has had many accomplishments this year that I have been so proud of. One in particular would be when we won the Athletics Carnival. During the middle of the day, we were coming fourth, however, by the time relays came around, everyone in the House stepped up and we were able to go from fourth to winning the whole carnival. It made me so proud of Fergo’s teamwork and dedication knowing that every single person was part of the win.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?

I hope to leave behind a legacy of kindness, approachability, and leading from the front. I want to be remembered as a leader who was always there for my peers, offering support, encouragement, or even just a friendly face. My goal is to have contributed to and continued to grow a positive environment and the strong sense of community that defines Ferguson. What parting words do you have for your House?

If I were to describe Fergo as a House, I would say hardworking, passionate, and proud. I hope that as a Fergoian you keep striving for excellence and lift each other up along the way. I also hope that everyone in Fergo this year feels proud of their contributions to the House. Without each and every one of you, our success would not have been possible.

If you could instantly learn one new skill, what would it be and why?

If I could learn one new skill, I would say dancing… and singing. Although I think I’ve mastered these skills already, I’m not sure my House would agree.

MCNEIL House Captain Report

In what ways has being a House Captain helped you to grow personally and as a leader?

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?

During my House Captaincy, what has helped me grow both personally and as a leader is learning that you can’t do everything by yourself. Going into my Captaincy, the idea of delegating roles was mentioned to me but at the beginning, I thought I would be a better leader if I could do it all alone. However, over this year I have learned that the ability to delegate roles to the House Co-ordinators is so important and a good leader doesn’t dictate to the House but shares tasks with all Year 12 leaders. This lesson is a standout to me and has only made things easier since understanding its importance.

What accomplishments are you most proud of from your time as House Captain?

I am most proud of the implementation of Vertical Tutor Group (VTG). This initiative was an idea that all the House Captains worked hard to implement. It is hard to accomplish big ideas without the help of your other House Captains because we are a team. Even though VTG is still in the works to becoming something bigger for the school and inter-year relationships

I am proud that I was able to be a part of the House Captain team that accomplished the implementation of VTG.

I hope to be remembered as a memorable Captain. By this I mean, in my experience, I knew I wanted to go for the House Captain position before Year 7 but in Year 9 I had the experience of remembering that one House Captain who made me want to work hard to strive for the position. She was my memorable House Captain and I hope that I can be that person for younger girls.

What parting words do you have for your House?

McNeil has a strong motto, “Victory or Death” and although never taken literally I also want everyone not to take it metaphorically. We are a strong House and I have watched everyone grow in confidence over this year which has improved our performance. I always want McNeil to strive for victory and we may not achieve first place but I want to say that this doesn’t mean “Death”. Whatever place we come, if you tried your best that is Victory, and no one should ever put the idea that we didn’t achieve victory just because of a number scale.

If you could live in any era of history for a week, which would you choose and why?

Entirely because of the dresses, I would want to travel back to the Bridgerton Era. After watching the show I have never been more obsessed with the Bridgerton girls’ outfits throughout their debuts.

House Captain Report

In what ways has being a House Captain helped you to grow personally and as a leader?

Being a House Captain has helped me grow in many ways. I’ve learned to communicate better, lead by example, and resolve conflicts more effectively. Balancing these responsibilities has improved my time management, and working with others has strengthened my teamwork skills. Overall, this experience has shaped me into a more capable and responsible individual, ready to face new challenges.

What accomplishments are you most proud of from your time as House Captain?

I’m proud of several key accomplishments. However, Ross coming in second place at Cross Country just highlights our neverending resilience and teamwork, despite friendly banter between competing Houses.

The implementation of vertical House Tutor Groups at PLC has further strengthened connections and support among students across different year levels; turning PLC into the ultimate family in Black Watch tartan.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?

I hope to leave behind a legacy of a bonded community filled with unwavering support. I want to be remembered for creating an environment in which every student feels

valued and uplifted. My greatest wish is for this sense of community to continue to grow, inspiring PLC girls to always support and encourage one another.

What parting words do you have for your House?

As I step down as House Captain, my heart is full of gratitude and love for each one of you. This journey has been incredible because of the unforgettable moments we’ve shared and the triumphs we’ve celebrated together. Always remember to lift each other up, strive for excellence, and seize every opportunity to grow. Believe in yourselves and each other, and never be afraid to step out of your comfort zones to pursue your dreams. Our House is not just a team; it’s a family, bound by experiences and enthusiasm. I am confident that the spirit of unity and love we’ve built will continue to flourish. #Ross is Boss.

What’s the strangest prediction about the future that you’ve heard, and do you think it could come true?

I wouldn’t really call it a ‘strange’ prediction; PLC taught me to make educated predictions instead. But definitely, Ross House is in its comeback era, ready to fully embody “We came, we saw, we conquered.”

House Captain Report

In what ways has being a House Captain helped you to grow personally and as a leader?

Being House Captain has expanded my perspective and enhanced my skills in so many ways this past year. Being given the privilege to lead my peers and younger students has strengthened my self-confidence and ability to lead a team towards a common goal. Being House Captain has highlighted the importance of optimism and encouragement, as it is through consistent positivity that Stewart continued to thrive throughout the year.

What accomplishments are you most proud of from your time as House Captain?

This year started strong with a big win at the Swimming Carnival! This showed the Stewart members, both new and old, the strength of our House and I was so proud of the effort and support each Stewartian displayed that day. I am also extremely proud of how Stewart House got involved in the new VTG initiative. Our Stewart groups were willing to get involved and connect with students from other years. Their willingness to try this new initiative and contribute to conversations and activities was admirable.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?

I hope to leave Stewart having demonstrated to the younger Stewart members the pride and contentment derived from building a sense of

belonging. Being a part of this smaller House community within a big school sparks new connections, competition, and pride, and has been an unforgettable part of my high school experience. I hope to impart the understanding that a successful team is not always defined by points and trophies; instead, it is composed of individuals demonstrating effort, perseverance, and positivity.

What parting words do you have for your House?

The strength of Stewart is unmatched and as long as we continue to encourage and support each other, Stewart will succeed. Unlike the common phrase, the grass IS greener on our side!

If you could see 100 years into the future, what would you hope to see and what would you hope stays the same?

100 years in the future, I hope to see the invention of super-speed flying cars to fulfill my aspiration of teleportation to my dream travel destinations. I would also love to see the construction of a second Bev’s cafe here at PLC. In 100 years, I hope that Yochi is still around because nothing compares to the numerous Friday night Yochi trips that have helped us all get through the highs and lows of the year. Additionally, it would be amazing to see PLC Arts Day still going, making it to the 150th in 100 years!

In what ways has being a House Captain helped you to grow personally and as a leader?

House Captain has helped me grow personally more than I could have ever imagined. It has really pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone, to speaking in front of everyone at House Meeting, to presenting girls with their pockets at assembly and organising and coordinating events within the House. It has helped me to become more confident and organised as a person and a leader. But the most important lesson it has taught me is the value of helping people and becoming a more selfless person. I have valued the way our Summers community will give every girl the support they need to put their hand up and to feel included.

What accomplishments are you most proud of from your time as House Captain?

The Summers House this year has had some amazing accomplishments. But the accomplishments I am most proud of don’t come from our actual results and placements, but from the amazing acts I have seen from the individuals within the House. At every carnival, each girl was supportive of the others. From cheering every girl over the finish line, to putting their hand up to sub in for those events like the 1500m at Athletics, to each girl showing up every week to Arts Day rehearsals and giving it their absolute all. I think that these acts of support, dedication and bravery are what I am most truly proud of within my House and are the biggest accomplishments I can ask for.

What legacy do you hope to leave behind?

When I reflect on what legacy I want to leave behind, one of the main thoughts that comes to mind is honouring the legacy that the girls and previous Summers House Captains have left before me. It is one of inclusivity and giving everything a go no matter what. It’s a tight knit community that embodies the true meaning of sisterhood and I hope that in my time as House Captain I have embodied and strengthened the legacy left behind. I hope I have created my own mark and impact on the House, one of passion and inspiring the girls of the younger years to always get involved in every opportunity that arises and a community of fun and laughter.

What parting words do you have for your House?

My parting words for my amazing Summers House is to remember that while everyone has their time to do some amazing things individually, it’s not about what you achieve, but how you make people feel and the lasting impact you can make on others.

If your House had a theme song, what would it be, and why?

The theme song that Summers would have would be “Try Everything” by Sharika, as I believe it encapsulates the very message that Summers promotes. We want every girl to give everything a go, no matter what.

50 YEARS OF THE

“Best Day of the Year”

Celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2024, Senior School Arts Day—affectionately known as the “Best Day of the Year”—has grown from a small committee-led initiative in 1974 to a cherished tradition on the PLC calendar, uniting students in a vibrant celebration of creativity and collaboration.

The inaugural Arts Day was sparked by a committee consisting of two students from each House and two staff members, each House had for the first time, a House Arts Captain as well as a House Sports Captain.

Members of the original Committee and the first House Arts Captains were:

Kerry Dowland (Carmichael) Caroline McKenzie (McNeil) Rebecca Clough (Ferguson); and Wendy Carlin (Stewart) the inaugural Arts Captain

Reflecting on those early days in the 1974 issue of The Kookaburra, Wendy captured the committee’s hope for an arts festival that would invite girls to either “take it or leave it.” Five decades later, the enthusiasm for Arts Day is proof that PLC students have fully embraced this opportunity.

This landmark 50th Arts Day underscores PLC’s enduring commitment to fostering creativity, teamwork, and joy— memories that students will carry well beyond their school years. It is also a day that brings our whole community together with, Parents, family members and Old Collegians coming back to enjoy the magic of Arts Day.

Montague Arts Day Co-Ordinator

ACADEMIC Prefect Report

What’s one thing you have done to promote academics this year?

Do you think good grades determine the number of opportunities that are offered to you?

This year, the Inter-House Academics brought students of all year groups together to answer some questions related to Science, Humanities, Maths, and Languages! By joining students of all year groups together to work on a common goal, I believe that through this fun quiz, the academic environment fostered at PLC has extended to bringing year groups closer through shared interests and knowledge.

What is your favourite subject, and why?

I would probably say that Maths Specialist is my favourite subject. While it’s definitely challenging, there’s no better feeling than the topic you’ve been working on finally ‘clicking’, and realising you actually understand it.

I also find that Maths Specialist challenges the ways I’ve been taught to think previously, occasionally mixing creativity and maths in some mind-breaking problems. Along with the subject itself being interesting, I’ve also found that the skills and ways of thinking which I’ve developed through Maths Specialist extend to both the Math Methods and Math Applications courses, occasionally covering similar topics and deepening my understanding as a whole.

Yes, and no. While having good grades can unlock some opportunities that you might not have considered otherwise, or allow you to apply to certain university courses, that doesn’t mean that having good grades is the only way to access these opportunities. With most things, there are multiple ways to achieve your goals and dreams without the need for consistently high grades.

To match this year’s Kookaburra theme, which three subjects do you think would best help with travelling, and why?

Out of my subjects, I would say that French, Chemistry, and Maths Applications would best help with travelling. In French, we learn both the language as well as the cultural traditions, and acceptance of ideals that are different to our own. Similarly, in Chemistry we learn to understand the world around us, applying an analytical lens to everyday life. Finally, in Maths Applications, you learn about budgeting and finance, which are crucial when travelling. I think that the skills developed in these three subjects best contribute to a well-seasoned traveller’s toolkit.

Zoe Michea-Palmer

ARTS Captain Report

How would sum up this year, and why?

This year, our school celebrated the Arts with spectacular performances that highlighted the diverse talents and creativity among us students. These included the PLC Scotch senior musical “School of Rock”, the senior play “Devil of the Second Stairs”, and the lower school musical “Mary Poppins Junior”. The Dance and PAS Showcases immersed us in the world of dance and drama, with students demonstrating impressive skill and execution. Most notably, the fabulous Arts Day (aka the best day of the year) marked its 50th anniversary, uniting the school in a shared passion for the Arts. If I had to sum up 2024, not just for the Arts sector but for the entire year, I’d say it’s perfectly captured by the Year 12 motto: Hear Us Roar, as we dive into everything with full enthusiasm.

What inspired you to take part in the Arts?

I can’t pinpoint a singular moment that made me decide to take part in the Arts; it’s always been an integral part of my life. From an early age, I was enrolled in ballet classes, making dance a constant presence. I was singing before I could talk and always had a strong interest in music. My artist grandmother nurtured my creativity with numerous art projects, and I’ve now

participated in almost every production at PLC. The Arts have seamlessly woven into my life, shaping my passions and interests from the very beginning.

What was your favourite school production during your time at PLC and why?

Honestly, this is a tough question as I always get so much joy from productions, but I would have to say the lower school musical of 2021, Matilda the Musical. My sister played the lead role, which was an incredibly stressful experience for her. But for me, it was a time filled with making great friends and fun memories while playing the esteemed role of ‘Big Kid 5.’ It happened to be the first professional musical I’d ever seen, and getting the opportunity to participate in it at school definitely opened my eyes to the world of musical theatre.

If this year was made into a movie, what would its title be?

I’m struggling to look beyond the classics I know, like “High School Musical”, especially with this year’s two musicals and a new one in the works, not to mention all the singing in the halls. It’s been so intense that at times, it felt like we were in our own version of “Whiplash” – minus the blood, sweat, and tears (mostly).

BOARDER Report SENIOR

What is it like living with people from all over the world?

Living with people from all over the world has been incredibly enriching, each day I learn different languages, traditions, and perspectives. Despite the differences between us, we are able to find common ground and create strong bonds with one another, making us feel as if we all belong and that we are supported. To me, its not just about living together, it’s about building a community where everyone’s experiences contribute to a vibrant and encouraging atmosphere.

What’s your favourite memory from your time in the Boarding House?

One of my favourite memories from my time in the Boarding House, though it may seem controversial, was closed weekends. These weekends, where it’s compulsory to stay in and participate in a range of activities set up by the Housies and Year 12s, always seemed to fall on my birthday. While I didn’t get to see my family, there was no other way I would rather spend the weekend than with my extended family at the Boarding House. We went to Adventure World, had a movie night, enjoyed a disco on the last night, and shared a big breakfast with everyone on Sunday. It was in those moments, surrounded by friends who felt like family, that I truly appreciated the close-knit community we had built.

What are some fun facts about the Boarding House that we might not know?

1. We have a Boarding House ‘pet’ (Ms Edwards’ dog) that visits every now and then

2. You get your own room in Year 12

3. Each weekend we catch up/have socials with other boys and girls schools. We do year group dinners at Ms Begbie’s house. What advice would you give to yourself if you could return to the time when you started boarding?

At first, I was nervous and unsure about being away from home and surrounding myself with new people, but now as I look back I realise those initial fears were normal but unnecessary. I found that the outpouring of love and support has got me to where I am today. Developing relationships with staff and students has been vital to my happiness and enjoyment here and I have shared the most gorgeous memories with the community that aren’t just my friends, they are family. I would tell myself to embrace boarding school as a chance to explore, learn, and grow into the best version of myself.

JUNIOR & SENIOR Prefect Report

Why is it important to build connections between Junior and Senior School students?

I believe that connecting Junior and Senior School students is vital for nurturing a strong school community. These connections bridge age gaps, fostering mutual respect and a sense of belonging among students. Younger students benefit from mentorship and guidance, which boosts their social skills and confidence. At the same time, Senior students gain valuable leadership experience and a sense of fulfilment by mentoring younger peers. These relationships promote inclusivity and cultivate empathy across different age groups, creating a supportive and dynamic school environment.

What advice would you give to students as they transition from Junior to Senior School?

Focus on taking ownership of your learning journey. This means developing strong study habits, actively participating in class, and seeking help when needed; everyone in the PLC Senior School, whether staff or peers, are all there to help you. It is also important to embrace your independence by setting clear goals and managing your time effectively.

What is your favourite memory from Junior School?

My favourite memory was Busking Day. It was always the day I would look forward to the most as a little Year 2. You would see girls from different years perform an art of their choice all scattered around the Junior School, from girls dancing to ‘Shake it Off’ in their fluro tights and high piggy-tails, to the other girls doing a Cello solo. It’s definitely a day I could never forget.

What is your favourite memory from Senior School?

Speech Night has to be one of the best days of the year. Being able to watch all the amazing performances that have been showcased throughout the year, and seeing all the achievements the amazing students have accomplished is such an amazing experience, especially at the end of a school year.

What was your favourite tv show in childhood and what is your favourite tv show now?

When I was growing up, I would binge watch ‘In The Night Garden’ just to see the Ninky Nonk with all the Pontipines, and Macca Pacca with his soap and sponge. But as I have grown up, I have definitely shifted into more of a movie person. I love so many movies but all the ‘Pitch Perfects’, everything Disney related and ‘Jurassic Park’ are top tier.

RECONCILIATION Captains Report

Monique Mouda-Hughes & Ebony Withers

Which aspects of Indigenous culture do you find most fascinating?

Monique and I find the Indigenous culture so fascinating because it is the oldest living culture on the planet and has so many different tribes and language groups, yet they all come together as one community. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures hold a rich tapestry of history, language, country, and knowledge passed down from one generation to the next.

How has being the 2024 Reconciliation Captains influenced your own perspectives or understanding of reconciliation?

Being 2024 Reconciliation Captains, we have both been exposed to people having limited knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders culture and history. But we’ve seen firsthand that by taking time out of your day to learn about the culture and history of such an important part of First Nations peoples’ story, your perspective can shift to be more open-minded and understanding of different cultures, values, and beliefs.

How would you recommend that members of the community help to promote reconciliation?

Encouraging reconciliation includes getting involved and showing your support for fellow peers. It should not be a single experience or event, it should be continuously addressed throughout your whole life, especially in everyone’s schooling experience and in the workplace.

If you could see 100 years into the future, what would you hope to see?

If we could see 100 years into the future, we hope to witness a deeply transformed and reconciled Australia where Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples live together in mutual respect, understanding, and partnership. A nation where the inequality in health, education, and employment between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians has been eradicated. This would mean equitable access to quality healthcare, education, and economic opportunities, allowing Indigenous peoples to thrive.

SERVICE Captain Report

What does service leadership mean to you personally, and how has your role as Service Captain shaped your understanding of it?

To me, it means initiating actions that inspire broader change. As Mother Teresa said: “I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the water to create many ripples”. I’ve learned that while one person’s efforts might not solve global issues alone, they can ignite a series of positive impacts illustrating the importance of collaboration, empowerment, involvement, and definitely getting your hands dirty! Leading projects and motivating others has shown me that each small action contributes to a larger movement, amplifying our collective influence. It’s about fostering an environment of working alongside others, celebrating collective successes, and creating a ripple that extends far beyond oneself!

Which of this year’s service initiatives have you found most exciting and/or rewarding?

Personally, free dress days are my absolute favorite! Although not a direct form of service, I love seeing enthusiasm in the Senior and Junior Schools. With themes like “Inspiring Women” recognising International Women’s Day and “Past, Present, and Future,” it illustrated everyone’s creativity and tenacity towards our school values. I was so proud of the involvement and the various costumes flooding the halls, which reflected everyone’s individuality and spirit. This year, I also had the great opportunity to introduce our World Vision children, who are sponsored through our free dress days: 14-year-olds Margaret from Kenya and Josephine from Zambia. It was amazing to put a name to a face, it shift our view of free dress days from just a break from uniform to supporting these two amazing girls who are part of our community here at PLC.

How has your experience as Service Captain influenced your future career aspirations?

It has profoundly influenced my aspirations in international relations by instilling a sense of purpose in the complex dynamics of today’s world, which is in the hands of my generation. Leading various service initiatives and working with others has not only taught me professional management and collaboration skills, but also heightened my awareness of global challenges and dynamics. This role has inspired me to pursue a career where I can contribute to solving worldwide issues using skills like empathy, diplomacy, and openmindedness, strengthened through this leadership position. It has driven my motivation to engage in efforts fostering social justice, sustainability, and global cooperation, further solidifying my passion for international relations.

If you could organise a service project in any country in the world, where would it be, what would it be, and why?

I would organize rural education programs in Indonesia. Growing up there, I’ve witnessed the effects of social gaps and poverty on families, particularly in underdeveloped areas. These issues exacerbate educational disparities and limit opportunities for many children. As a school leader myself, I’ve realised how education is an integral part of development. By focusing on strengthening education, we can address these disparities and provide children in rural schools opportunities for growth that they deserve. Additionally, Indonesia’s proximity to Australia presents a unique opportunity to strengthen diplomatic ties and foster regional collaboration.

Nikki Jenkins

SPORTS Captain Report

Alexandra Enslin

What got you into sports?

Being a classic youngest child, I would follow my siblings’ every move and every sport they did. I started at my brother’s rugby club, then joey soccer, then my sisters minkey team. From there it just never stopped. I found what I was good at and what I loved and stayed with it from then on.

Why is sport important for young people?

Sport provides so many benefits for everyone I couldn’t even count. For young people and specifically young girls, sport can influence their lives in such a positive way. Not only physical health, healthy habits, and ambition, sport provides so many mental benefits. I know personally, sport had provided me with confidence in myself and has helped me identify my values. It enables young people to create social skills, having to interact with teammates, coaches, and a broader community. It teaches them resilience, an aspect many young people struggle with and one they will have to face in real life situations.

What would you recall as your favourite sporting memory from this year?

My final year at school was filled with many great sporting-related moments,

but my top pick has to be my 11/12 AFL team. Going into the season, it looked like it was going to be a more relaxed team, but I was proven wrong pretty quickly. We started racking up win after win, suddenly realising we were second on the ladder. Our final game was a must-win game to secure the pennant (so in our heads it was our Grand Final). The whole game was back and forth, but finally we secured the win and were top of the ladder. To our luck, another school beat us on percentage (a technicality we do not bring up as a team). Even though we didn’t end up walking away with the real flag in hand, that team was filled with laughs, encouragement, and good times.

If you could add a random sport to the Olympics, what would it be and why?

There is no question that if I had to add a sport to the Olympics it would 100% be Boogieboarding. I think it is one of the most underrated sports out there. Not only does it require maximum skill, but it is also an art in itself. If it was entered into the Olympics today, you best believe I would be out on the waves shredding it up, waiting for my moment.

WELLBEING Captain Report

Genevieve Kessey

Why is wellbeing important?

Taking care of your physical and mental well being is vital to all aspects of your life. Having a strong sense of wellbeing allows you to stay healthy, build meaningful friendships, remain grounded in times of stress, and embrace your individuality! To me, the key to maintaining a strong sense of wellbeing is in staying true to your values, being compassionate, and giving back to those around you. Understanding physical and mental wellbeing is incredibly valuable in supporting members of the community struggling with their wellbeing, and helps us all to lead a healthy and happy life!

What initiatives have you implemented to promote wellbeing at PLC, and how successful do you think these have been?

As this year’s Wellbeing Captain, I have had the privilege of implementing a range of initiatives to promote wellbeing across the school. My favourite initiative was getting the Year 12s to write welcome notes in HTG for the Year 7s, which were then stuck on their lockers as a surprise for Valentine’s Day! This initiative was successful in building relationships between the

Year 7s and 12s within their Houses, and fostering a sense of community for new students to feel welcomed to the Senior School. Another of my initiatives has been writing weekly wellbeingfocused segments in the Daily Notices that promote many different aspects of wellbeing. I think this has been successful as it reminds students to ‘check in’ with themselves in the midst of the busy (and sometimes stressful) school term, and has encouraged many discussions about the importance of wellbeing.

Which is your favourite room in the Lighthouse, and why?

My favourite room in the Lighthouse is the Recharge Room. I find it a really relaxing and cosy spot to go if I’m ever feeling overwhelmed with schoolwork. Plus, the rock pillows are really comfortable!

What do you recommend as the best way to de-stress?

I find that the best way to de-stress is by spending time and laughing with my friends and family.

What is your go-to comfort meal?

My go-to comfort meal is definitely my mum’s homemade tiramisu - in my household this counts as a meal!
