Open Garden Day

Friday 18 October 2024

PLC acknowledges traditional custodians on the lands of Noongar Nation, where for thousands of years, this land was nurtured and sustained by the strengths, courage, and wisdom of the Noongar people. We recognise their continuing connection to this Boodja and pay respects to their elders and leaders, past, present, and future.

From the Principal

Open Garden Day is a highlight in the PLC calendar, a day that brings together our community to celebrate the beauty of nature and the generosity of spirit that defines PLC.

This day would not be possible without the unwavering support of the Peppermint Grove community, who graciously open their gardens to us. It is a privilege to be part of such a giving and vibrant community, and I extend my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you.

This year, our event features five stunning gardens. These gardens are a true reflection of the season’s beauty, offering a chance to connect with nature and a source of inspiration for all.

I would also like to acknowledge the incredible efforts of our Open Garden Day Committee and PLC Parents, whose dedication and hard work have made this event the success it is today. Your passion and commitment are deeply appreciated.

A special mention must go to the View Street Marketplace, a perennial favourite among our students and visitors alike. This lively hub is a wonderful showcase of the connection between Perth businesses and PLC, many who have supported this event for multiple years.

I extend a very warm welcome to all our visitors and hope you enjoy a day of inspiration, connection, and the beauty of nature.

Warm regards,

St Agnes

Step through the double gates and you’ll be greeted by a freshly updated front garden. Towering above, the grand Siberian elm casts a cooling canopy over the garden, where New Zealand flax lilies, dichondra, mondo grass, liriopes, clivia, and native violet nestle beneath the blooms of two crepe myrtle trees. Soft tones of white and pink hues weave through the landscape, with a delicate blend of holly fern, alstroemeria, and a mirror bush adding to the tranquil scene.

Framing the front limestone fence are creeping roses and elegant iceberg roses, while rows of Indian hawthorn create a natural curtain of privacy. Along the western boundary, the pink hues of Indian hawthorn repeat with ornamental pears leading to the rear of the property.

As you round the enormous tuart tree, a favourite spot for the grandchildren to climb and play in the cubby house, you’ll discover its majestic counterpart—a towering tuart that was just a 6ft sapling when the owners acquired the property in 1998. Beyond the pool and terraced lawns, a quaint rose garden interspersed with ‘big red’ bushes and Spanish bluebells adds to the charm.

Tucked beside the outdoor studio lies a thriving edible garden, where raised veggie beds flourish with companion plantings of tomatoes, chilli, oregano, and strawberries, alongside a collection of thyme, coriander, basil, and chives. Completing the bounty is an olive tree, lime tree, fig, and a mango tree—a cherished gift from their daughter in Broome.

Warning: Active bee hives in the back garden.

The fence lines overflow with vibrant greenery, thanks to star jasmine and Madagascar jasmine, while inviting arches adorned with creeping roses beckon you to explore the further corners of this enchanting garden.

39 Irvine Street

David Goyder and his wife, Margaret, came from Adelaide to WA with their two young sons, Barr and Bruce, in late 1897. After a couple of weeks in the Goldfields, they came down to Perth where they leased a home in Irvine Street, Peppermint Grove and David established an accounting practice in Fremantle, in January 1898. In March, he entered into a High Street partnership with Harold Smith and Reginald Wadham (later Smith & Goyder).

He bought land at what is now 39 Irvine Street, Peppermint Grove, and, in late 1897, contracted local architect J J Talbot Hobbs to design a home for him. Hobbs then called for tenders for the building of David’s limestone villa, with weatherboard stabling and tennis court, in February 1899. Once complete, David named the home ‘Warrakilla’, after the Goyder family home in South Australia (itself named for the gold mine of the same name in the Onkaparinga), and the family moved in, in 1900.

Barr attended school just a few doors down at Miss Annie’s at 29 Irvine Street, which opened in 1900, and likely finished his schooling in Adelaide. In time, Bruce also went to Miss Annie’s, and on to Scotch College. (It is mistakenly recorded there, that one of David and Margaret’s sons was killed in Damascus, Palestine, during WWI, but neither of David’s sons served. Instead, the WWI fatality was David’s nephew Alan; the son of David’s younger brother, Alexander.)

In 1918, David and Margaret sold their home to Thomas Field, an Elder Shenton & Co manager, which became Elder Smith & Co around this time. Aside from his managing of businesses, Thomas also had strong pastoral interests. Since around 1909, he had been in partnership with Sam Phillips, one of WA’s earliest cattle kings, in H Watson, Williams & Co, of Cranbrook.

Thomas also knew David, as aside from both working in the pastoral industry, both their families were from the same Adelaide suburb of Walkerville.

Thomas, who was not married, immediately renamed the home ‘Westover’, after his family home in Adelaide, and lived there with his widowed mother Elizabeth, and his older sister, Margaret, a nurse.

In 1929, with his sister then married, Thomas and his mother returned to Adelaide and the home was rented by Dr Arthur and Mrs Violet Lyster, whose daughter Honor Lyster (1932) came to PLC in 1930. Dr Lyster took patients daily in his consulting rooms at the house. In August 1932 the Lysters moved to England, leaving the home empty once more.

Around this time, at the height of the Great Depression, the home was briefly divided into two apartments

In 1933, the front was rented by James Harris and, in the rear was recently-widowed Mrs Lena Kerr, whose husband, Dr Charles Kerr, had been the doctor at Fremantle Gaol.

Lena’s daughter Dr Edith Hill (Kerr 1930) had completed her education at PLC and was one of the first Old Collegians to enrol in Medicine at Melbourne University, where she was then in her second year.

In 1936, the house was bought by Alexander Pearson, whose daughters Helen Bean (Pearson 1946), Meg Parker (Pearson 1948) and Janet Larard (Pearson 1953) all came through PLC.

After the war, the home changed hands and tenants a few times until the late 1950s when it was bought by Irish architect Lex Hill and his wife Barbara who, with Lex’s parents Alfred and Kathleen, ran the Shiralee, a thriving basement café in Howard Street, Perth.

They moved in to Irvine Street with Lex’s parents, and raised their eventual brood of four children. The Hills lived there until the early 1990s and, during this time, the home was named St Agnes.

The current owner has owned this beautiful home since 1998. They carried out some restorations immediately and undertook larger renovations in 2002. They have no plans in their foreseeable future to part with their comfortable home, and remain committed to maintaining its history and charm for many years to come.

Wanda

Tucked behind an ivy-covered limestone wall, this garden oasis invites you to escape into a world of lush greenery and tranquillity. A stately potted Queensland fan palm greets you at the entry, setting the tone for the serene beauty that lies beyond.

The majestic canopy of tangled pepper trees creates a cool, shaded retreat, while garden beds filled with agapanthus and clivia bloom beneath. As you wander through, a striking strelitzia guides you to a charming pea gravel sitting area, where a magnificent ponytail palm takes centre stage, accompanied by the rustic charm of a chicken coop.

The home’s plantation-style wrap-around veranda, elegantly designed in ebony and ivory, is lined with a collection of ferns, liriopes, clivias, acanthus, and aspidistra.

Further along, an impressive 360-degree staghorn commands attention as you approach the decked area. Here, pots of variegated hemilodendrons, New Zealand laurel trees, and clumps of bamboo provide natural screening, while vibrant bursts of colour from magenta and green umbrellas are echoed by the pots of colourful flowers, creating a delightful, whimsical finish to this tranquil garden sanctuary.

This Federation Queen Anne-style bungalow was built in 1900 for Alfred Canning, a surveyor with the Department of Lands who is best remembered for his survey of the path for No: 1 Rabbit Proof Fence (1901-1907) and the cattle track between the Kimberleys and the Goldfields, which became the Canning Stock Route (1908-1910).

Canning came to WA with his wife and son in 1893. They named this home Wanda, but the name was forgotten over time.

Wanda, tenanted for much of Canning’s ownership, was sold in 1921 to James Cronshaw, a Foy & Gibson buyer. In 1936 he sold to Elsie and Perseus Holland. Elsie’s father William Montgomery owned No: 15, then next door, and when he died in 1941, the Hollands sold to Irene and James Edwards.

The next owners, in 1954, were newly married Hannah and Graham Cameron, merchant and former Burma prisoner of war.

Graham absolutely loved this house, and it was the couple’s only home for the entirety of their marriage.

Stained glass went out of style though, and was covered –invisible from the inside. Outside, however, years later, Graham’s son remembers seeing a glint of colour. Intrigued, he carefully pulled away the panel revealing the forgotten, hidden beauty.

Graham died in 1996 and, after nearly half a century in the home, Hannah sold to the current owner at auction in December 2002, with her son listening and accepting the winning bid over the phone from New Orleans.

The current owner has since painstakingly renovated and extended this home in the same style as the original. The garden, contained by the original fence, was retained and is now very old and well established. This comfortable old home remains loved and cared for, and is in good hands for the future.

149 Forrest Street

As you enter this stunning north-facing garden, you are immediately greeted by a picturesque entry garden, where a semi-circular lawn is framed by vibrant garden beds overflowing with lush ground coverings. New Zealand flax lilies, bird’s nest ferns, thryptomene saxicolas, coastal rosemary, and a mass of clivia create a serene, verdant welcome that sit before a wall of dombeya natalensis trees.

The sloping driveway, crowned by a majestic sweeping tipuana tree, is elegantly lined with box hedges, Indian hawthorn, irises, and the sweet fragrance of frangipani. On the eastern boundary, a delicate climbing rose adds a touch of charm and romance.

Stepping through the ornate hand-carved wooden door, adorned with wrought iron detailing, feels like a journey from Peppermint Grove to Tuscany. Beyond the entrance, the sky is dominated by

towering jacaranda, magnolia, and crepe myrtle trees, adding a sense of grandeur to this beautiful formal space.

Hedges are meticulously arranged throughout the garden, with underplantings of liriope, creeping fig, and ivy, offering a rich tapestry of textures and tones. Hidden behind tall, private walls, a Mediterranean-inspired aquamarine pool shimmers like a jewel, inviting moments of relaxation under the arbour’s gentle shade.

A conveniently placed herb garden, abundant with aromatic rosemary, parsley, and thyme, adds a practical and fragrant touch to this enchanting space.

Wisteria whimsically drapes across the entry to the vestibule, creating a peaceful haven that seamlessly blends Mediterranean elegance with Australian warmth.

17 View Street

A wonderful garden of beauty and interest, designed, planted, and cared for by knowledgeable and avid gardeners for decades.

The front gardens are dominated with crepe myrtle trees, roses, ageratum, bottlebrush, conifers, judas, and flowering pear trees. The giant dragon tree underplanted with dogbane is a striking feature.

Decorative urns, pots and birdbaths are surrounded with foxgloves, iris, clivia, day lilies and giant crinum lilies. Winding box hedges add an element of formality.

Plantings of hawthorn, westringia, correa, ferns, liriope, and aspidistra add splashes of colour. The shady front entrance is full of ferns, ligularia, and more foxgloves.

The avid garden wanderer will uncover a thriving vegetable corner with artichokes, kale, and much more to discover.

The rear multi-level garden has wisteria and jasmine-covered pergolas, potted citrus and masses of blue iris, November lilies, New Zealand rock lilies, ferns and philodendrons with cascading convolvulus and wallflower.

The striking echium (pictured right) continues a strong repetition of purple and blue hues throughout the garden. It flowers prolificially, bringing a sense of gradure and begs the gaze skyward.

A dense planting of New Zealand rock lillies is a striking contrast with their white blooms. Interspersed throughout features holly and datura (angel trumpets).

The stunning grand gazebo features an established heritage climbing rose with striking dark red blooms.

The recently remodelled pool sits pride of place infront of a delightful cascading water feature urn home to a school of goldfish.

One could spend hours wandering through this garden with something new to see from every angle. What a garden to browse through!

Guest Speaker, Brook Sly, will be talking about gardening and wellbeing in this garden at 11.30 am.

11 Johnston Street

Woodbine

Once a resplendent English rose garden, this quaint property has gracefully transformed over time to reflect the changing needs of its owners. With the guidance of their horticulturist daughter, the garden has been simplified for ease of care, yet retains the timeless charm that has always made it so special.

Stepping through the striking black gloss wrought iron gates, lined with agapanthus and cheerful white daisies, you are greeted by two towering Norfolk Island pine trees, standing proudly beside a 120-year-old Alexandra palm—a nod to the coastal beauty of this garden. To your left, a magnificent angel's trumpet stands in full glory. The owners take great pride in this botanical wonder, which graces the garden with its stunning flowers nearly year-round. As your eyes are drawn to the elegant colonial home, the garden invites you in to explore its carefully crafted appeal.

The veranda garden is a lovely tri-layered display of alstroemeria, clivia, and mondo grass, while stephanotis winds gracefully along the handrail. Along the eastern boundary, the sweet fragrance of frangipani fills the air, and a blanket of irises provides soft ground cover beneath.

Wandering along the brick-paved side path to the elevated north-facing rear, a pink peppercorn tree with a hollowed-out trunk serves as a sanctuary for a natural beehive, harmoniously shared with lorikeets. Beneath the graceful canopy of the pink peppercorn tree, a magnificent giant crinum lily sits proudly, its striking presence adding to the lush beauty of the garden's serene landscape.

The garden, dotted with monstera, clivia, tall fan palms, maidenhair ferns, and clusters of bamboo, provides privacy and tranquillity, while pear trees stand as natural screens.

Colour bursts from flowering beds of poppies, blue convolvulus, and ranunculus, while a central water fountain doubles as a bird bath, welcoming a variety of local birds. Potted tractor seats add an extra layer of rustic charm. A conveniently placed herb garden, with parsley, rosemary, mint, and seasonal vegetables, sits opposite a thriving old orange tree, laden with fruit.

This garden may have been simplified, but its beauty and character remain as vibrant as ever, offering both elegance and ease for the modern gardener.

Homemade Lemonade available in the garden.
