Wow! What a year it has been, to have gotten to this stage is a major achievement...
It was initially difficult for us to develop our own, unique concept for this year’s Kookaburra With the classic and bold look from last year’s publication, we really wanted to go down a different path and go for a more delicate look.
Unfortunately, we were unable to create a High School Musical theme to match our Year 12 quote, sorry!
The theme is inspired by watercolour and botanical designs influenced by our own love for all things elegant and beautiful. We were keen to incorporate some pressed flowers into the style, and we even managed to arrange some page designs where students are interacting with the floral illustrations and pressed flowers (see the Student Council spread!).
hectic and a wonderful experience. Having 5 at PLC, it was easy to work together as a
From the ‘wonderfully weird’ SpongeBob the Musical (shout-out Keira for that description!) to the exciting Inter-House Athletics Carnival... this year has had a wide range of opportunities that we have been able to include in this publication. We hope it inspires you to go out and participate in everything PLC has to offer; there really is something for everyone.
It’s been a privilege to be a witness to all the activities and events the College is running in both the Junior School and Senior School classrooms, from the Junior School’s Zooper Dooper day, to Year 8 Science flower dissection and Year 11 Biology camp. It really shows all the time and effort our teachers put into making our school experience one that’s unforgettable. We most definitely could not have done our role without the incredible work of Ms Gemma Freel. Her tireless and invaluable work does not go unnoticed, and we are thoroughly grateful for her support and guidance, in what has been a really challenging position. She truly is the backbone of the entire publication! Thank you!
Having a whole yearbook being a legacy you have left at the school is so amazing and we are proud of the publication we have produced. To our fellow Year 12s, we hope you treasure this Kookaburra for years to come, and hope it is a heartwarming reminder of the memories you have created across your last year. We hope you enjoy!
India Mansbridge & Ava Deykin
What have been some of the most significant moments this year?
Principal’s REPORT
Waking up in Ningaloo – a reminder of what amazing experiences our students have at PLC with our Outdoor Education Programme. It was fantastic to share the experience with students and a pleasure to get to know this group in a context away from the College.
Breaking Free in 23 – It is our Year 12’s motto but it is a good reminder to all of us. This year I have started to do a social media reel each week, which is new for me. I am becoming more comfortable being uncomfortable. I even joined the students on stage at Sponge Bob just to experience what that was like.
What distinguishes PLC from other schools?
I can only comment on what I believe makes PLC a very special place, which is the exceptional and dedicated staff who nurture the minds and spirits of every student. Our ethos is to provide a holistic education that recognises the importance of developing wellrounded individuals who possess academic prowess and also strong character, empathy, and a sense of social responsibility. I hope that we inspire every student to be brave and authentic and to believe in their capacity to have a positive impact (big or small) on the world around them.
What is your vision for where PLC should head in the future?
The world is evolving and, as a school, we need to evolve with it.
In 2023 we reviewed our Strategic Plan with focus on Learning, Leadership, Wellbeing and Culture and Environment. Within this we will focus on
• Embracing innovative teaching methods and technology that can enhance learning.
• Given the growing importance of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) fields, we will continue to focus on providing robust STEAM education.
• With the world becoming more interconnected, fostering a global perspective is crucial.
• Prioritising students’ mental health and overall well-being will remain essential.
• Developing ethical and compassionate leaders is critical for the future of society.
• A focus on contributing to a sustainable future and caring for our environment is imperative.
What made you initially want to become a teacher?
My mother was a swimming teacher she would let me help with her classes, – even though I was about 10. I loved seeing the children learn new things and develop their confidence.
As I grew through my own experiences at school, I also realised the positive impact that teachers can have on young people and felt very grateful for the teachers I had.
What memory from your own schooling has shaped you the most?
The teachers who inspired me! I really loved Humanities in Senior School, particularly Modern and Ancient History. I had amazing teachers in both. Mr Richardson and Mr Porter were both so passionate about History themselves, that you couldn’t help but love it.
One of the subjects that I didn’t have a lot of confidence in when I was at school was Mathematics. I did not do very well in Mathematics, until I had Mr Donaldson as a teacher in Year 11. He was one of those teachers who believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. When I said I couldn’t do something, he would just suggest that we look at it in a different way. He would tell me, I couldn’t do it ‘yet’ and he would work with me until I could. He taught me the importance of never giving up on a student and the capacity of a committed teacher to help a young person love a subject even though they might struggle with it. By the end of Year 12 I did quite well in Mathematics and I really enjoyed it.

School LEADERS
What has been a highlight from your time at PLC?
Our amazing year group! We couldn’t have asked for a more supportive, fun, and unique group of fabulous people. Our energy when we’re together is unmatched, and we’re extremely lucky to have gone through this journey with all 151 of us. We would like to thank you all for being such a strong support network - everything is always easier when you are in it together.
What is your parting message to the younger years, as well as to the 2023 leavers?
Here are 3 key messages:
What was the inspiration behind the 2023 Year 12 motto?
The inspiration behind the motto “Breaking Free in 2023” was the endless opportunities that PLC gives us to push ourselves outside our comfort zone and break free from what we previously knew, to learn new things. The amazing success of students this year from arts to sport have inspired us all to continually challenge ourselves.
What has been the most daunting experience that you have had to overcome in your roles, and how did you deal with this?
When we were appointed, we immediately knew we had big shoes to fill. We wanted to continue the momentum created by previous leaders, by building strong relationships between year groups. As leaders, we used our voice in the school to encourage students to have confidence to get involved in all aspects of PLC life.

What were the highlights for the Senior School this year?
There are so many highlights from this year, but among the best would have to be Head of the River, The SpongeBob Musical, and Arts Day.
What are your plans for the Senior School as we move towards 2024?
In 2024 we will continue to look at new ways to challenge our students to achieve their best. We are particularly focused on providing further leadership opportunities for all students.

How do you connect with the Junior School students?
Meeting with and greeting the students as they arrive daily in our slipway or in the Junior School Library before school and making sure I visit every classroom daily to say hello and see what our Junior School girls are learning about.
What are your plans for the Junior School in the future?
Our Junior School Priority Areas include growing and developing our Sport and PE opportunities, further researching learning within the Primary Years Programme, and reviewing our Programme of Inquiry and Pre-Kindergarten to Year 6 Mathematics approaches to learning.
Such resilience! It helps me put things in perspective and bounce back more readily.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be, and why?
I think being able to fly would be a great superpower – being able to get to places quickly, over the traffic, feeling free would be wonderful. Think of all the extra time you would get back!

CAPTAIN REPORT
We are essentially one big family.
Grace Goody
What has been the most memorable moment for your House this year?
Baird’s most memorable moment was probably winning Athletics day this year. To me, Baird has never really felt like a sporty House so it’s safe to say I was so shocked, proud, and extremely happy when Baird was announced as first. I know the question only asked for one memorable moment, but there’s just so many that I have to share another. So, my other most memorable moment was winning House Dance on Arts Day. Everyone put so much effort into rehearsals and it was so nice to see everyone’s hard work and dedication pay off with us taking the win.
What have you learned from being a House Captain?
From being House Captain, I’ve learned many things about myself and about being a leader. The one that stuck out to me the most is that being a good leader takes a good support network. Mr Donaldson, Mrs Venturi, my Year 12 House Tutor Group and all my other fellow Bairdians have supported me through every step of my House Captain journey. Their unwavering support is what allowed me to lead them successfully with confidence and enthusiasm. I truly wouldn’t have been able to do it without them and their support.
What makes you most proud of your House?
I’m proud that the House fully embodies Baird’s motto, Participate and Progress. By this, I mean that I’m proud of their willingness to give everything a go and participate. They will always put their hand up for any event or activity and do it to the best of their ability. They give everything a go in House Dance, House Choir and at sports carnivals even if singing, dancing, and sports aren’t their thing.
What parting words do you have for your House?
I’d like to say thank you for letting me lead you all through this amazing year. It’s been an absolute pleasure to get to know a bit more about each and every one of you. Thanks for smiling and laughing with me, giving me a quick wave in the hallways, stopping me for chats to tell me about your day, and for making this year my favourite one yet. I LOVE MY BAIRDIANS –remember to always participate and progress.
If your House had a theme song, what would it be, and why?
If Baird had a theme song it would definitely be We are Family by Sister Sledge. Baird is one of the smaller Houses, so we all get to really know each other in rehearsals, at carnivals, and at House Meetings. So much so that we are essentially one big family.

I’ve
learned that all small moments and actions add up.
Hannah Potts
What has been the most memorable moment for your House this year?
There have been many memorable moments for Carmichael this year, however, I would narrow it down to performing our House Choir on Arts Day. In the leadup to Arts Day, the House, along with the Year 12s, put an enormous amount of effort and practice into House Dance, Choir, and other creative arts submissions. A sense of pride overcame me in knowing that every person in Carmichael performed both dance and choir to the best of their ability and gave it everything they had. Massive amounts of choreographing and arranging had been completed by our Choir and Dance Captains, and I was so appreciative that the House had backed them up and performed so well on the day.
What have you learned from being a House captain?
In being House Captain, I’ve learned that all small moments and actions add up. Funny times at House Meetings, smiling at members of the House in the hallways, chants and warmups, rehearsals… All these moments and actions contribute to the connection and cohesiveness of the House. It is not just one event that creates this, but many small events. The same can be applied to organisation. Throughout the year, scheduling, conversing with House co-ordinators, strategising with our House Advisor, were all integral to ensuring everything ran smoothly in the end. Consistency is the key to success.
What makes you most proud of your House?
How supportive the House is. For us Year 12s, organising an entire House can be a substantial amount of work, however, when you have 100 other students helping you, it makes it an easier feat to conquer. Especially on Arts Day, knowing that each student put their all into it, creates a sense of pride that will put a smile on your face.
What parting words do you have for your House?
Carmichael, it has been a privilege to lead you all this year. Continue playing the game, it’s what we do best. Farewell. Your Faithful leader, Hannah Potts.
If your House had a theme song, what would it be, and why?
Mr. Blue Sky. It is uplifting, used in the Megamind movie and has a revolutionary sound. “Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why you had to hide away for so long” is representative of the comeback that Carmichael is having!

CAPTAIN REPORT
I realised it was important to be a role model for the younger years.
Amilia McKenzie
What has been the most memorable moment for your House this year?
Apart from Fergo’s few incredible big wins this year, one of the most memorable moments that stands out to me was the Year 7 Cross-Country race. As it was their first time, some of the Year 7s were nervous, but after the encouragement and advice from the older Fergo girls they were ready to smash it. I ran the start of the race with them and was so proud to see every one of them cross the finish line.
What have you learned from being a House captain?
I have learned it is important to delegate to the people around you and be able to ask for help. I was lucky to have the help of my fellow Year 12s at House Meetings because 25 minutes is a long time to keep the attention of a whole House. I also realised it was important to be a role model for the younger years because I remember always looking up to the older girls and wanting to be like them.
What makes you most proud of your House?
When we won House Marching, I was incredibly proud of how Fergo worked together. We all worked hard as a team and every single person was part of the win. Everyone listened, executed, and came together to march as one. It was awesome!!!
What parting words do you have for your House?
Whenever I walk around the school, my eyes are searching for Fergians to give a wave and a smile. I hope this special sense of belonging and community that I feel is always a part of Fergo. I also hope that everyone in Fergo this year is proud of all they have contributed to the House and know that if it wasn’t for each and every one of them, we wouldn’t have achieved the success we have.

Jess Wolf
What has been the most memorable moment for your House this year?
It is impossible to pick one so here are a few: At the Inter-House Athletics Carnival, we watched all the Year 11s running the 1500m all together to support their runners and it warmed my heart. Realising that these events are truly a team effort and knowing that every McNeillian will always be there for one another. Another one was probably our air-guitar solos during House Choir. We are always having fun! I’d like to give special mention to Mr de Graaf who always participating in our House Tutor Group Dance on Arts Day. It always adds to the performance and once again – we have so much fun.
What have you learned from being a House captain?
I have learned that the real victory is the friendship and connections we create in our Houses. There is so much teamwork and, even through stressful times, everyone comes together at the end of the day and has a great time.
What makes you most proud of your House?
Seeing that every person in McNeil has so much House spirit. Whether it’s a student, staff member, or parent, once a McNeillian always a McNeillian. So much House
spirit that we are not embarrassed to run around in banana costumes. Our Year 12 House Tutor Group has the most House spirit I have ever seen, and I am so proud to be a part of this amazing group. I know that once a McNeillian always a McNeillian will be true for us, and they will always have a special place in my heart.
What parting words do you have for your House?
Make the most of it because House events are some of the most fun and special moments at PLC! Enjoy every second and I love you all.
If your House had a theme song, what would it be, and why?
‘Walking on Sunshine’ because this title perfectly describes how it feels when we spend time together in McNeil and when I see the team come together. McNeil is like sunshine!

CAPTAIN REPORT
You
should all be proud as your individuality makes Ross unique, strong, and BOSS.
Jaz Shervington
What has been the most memorable moment for your House this year?
I’d have to say our glorious and well-executed ‘Ross roll’ performed at this year’s Athletics Carnival. There is something so beautiful about 105 students, all years, shapes, and sizes, simultaneously stopping, dropping and rolling on the ground to reach a common goal. only did it bring the whole House together, but it also got an honourable mention from Ms Begbie herself. I’m sure May might have persuaded her to do so, as a
What
have you learned from House captain?
I have learned so much over this past year, but what stands out most is learning to embrace and enjoy the process. I have found the most joy out of getting to know members in Ross from all the year groups. While results are great and should be strived for, embracing little funny moments I have shared with my House has given me the greatest enjoyment.
What makes you most proud of your House?
Ross never gives up in showing House spirit and fights ‘till the end. This trait inspires us all to keep cheering, running, and singing, to try butterfly for the first time at the Swimming Carnival or to jump in the hurdles at the Athletics for the first time. It is this attitude that Ross shares that makes me the most proud.
What parting words do you have for your House?
Always remember ROSS IS BOSS, and make sure you say it loud and proud. I have loved every minute of being a part of the Ross community, a mighty community that is exceptionally diverse and multi-talented. You should all be proud as your individuality makes Ross unique, strong, and BOSS.
If your House had a theme song, what would it be, and why?
In my opinion, Starship’s We Built This City. As Ross is a relatively new House, I’ve always taken great pride in the fact that all of us students who have come through the House over the past few years have collectively worked hard to build Ross’s identity and a legacy for the House. Also, the chorus “We built this city on rock and roll” fits Ross well, being a homage to our rocking success on Arts Day and, of course, our iconic Ross roll.

What has been the most memorable moment for your House this year?
What makes you most proud of your House?
I think one of the most memorable moments for Stewart this year was when the whole House did a huge Stewart chant in a circle before the Cross Country races started! I remember standing in the middle shouting “give me an S” etc... until the word Stewart was chanted by all Stewart students with so much passion. At that moment I think our House truly showed Stewart pride.
What have you learned from being a House captain?
I have learned that letting yourself make mistakes is crucial in leading. My mistakes have allowed me to learn, improve, and help other students in Stewart to do the same. This role taught me that it is okay to make mistakes because you will always have people who can help you and support you no matter what and I learned that especially from my amazing House Tutor Group who helped me throughout the year every time things
The thing that makes me most proud of Stewart, is their consistent amount of passion and support. From the Swimming Carnival at the very start of the year I saw a range of students from new Year 7 students to Year 12s in Stewart who passionately cheered on students from all Houses on in the races. Stewart’s endless, enthusiastic and fun energy that I have experienced from when I first came to PLC makes me very proud.
What parting words do you have for your House?
Have fun! Stewart is such an amazing and unique House to be in and being a part of Stewart really has been the thing getting me through the ups and downs of Year 12. The exciting vibes of the Swimming Carnival, the enthusiastic voices at choir rehearsals, and the cheers of Stewart students as you run across the finish line is the most simple, yet fun and amazing part of being a Stewardian, so enjoy it!
If your House had a theme song, what would it be, and why?
Footloose by Kenny Loggins. It’s fun, it’s groovy, and there’s a part where everyone joins in. This song and it’s upbeat, inclusive vibe, describes Stewart perfectly.

What has been the most memorable moment for your House this year?
The most memorable moment for Summers was our House Choir on Arts Day. Although it was stressful in the lead up to Arts Day, watching us all come together and sing ‘Name of the Game’ was an unmatched feeling of joy, making everything totally worth it. You couldn’t wipe the smiles off our faces during the entire song and the rest of the day.
What have you learned from being a House captain?
The importance of organisation! A lot goes on behind the scenes of House events that I never realised. A big thank you to Mrs Moore, the most organised woman alive. I don’t think Summers would survive without her. Also, don’t expect everyone to read your emails!
What makes you most proud of your House?
The sheer amount of participation, enthusiasm, and Summers House spirit from everyone makes me the proudest House Captain in the world. We may not win first place, but in every single carnival, event or competition so many Summers girls put their hands up and give anything and everything a go. We’re not afraid to put ourselves out there, always with a smile on our faces.
Placing third overall in Arts Day, was a VERY proud moment, and the best Summers has done in a long time. Also, special shoutout to the Year 8 House Tutor Group who had 100% attendance at Cross Country and won their HTG Dance!
What parting words do you have for your House?
It has been an absolute pleasure and honour to be your House Captain for 2023. Summers is such a spectacular House with amazing people in it. Being a part of this community will always be one of my favourite memories of my time at PLC. Thank you all for such an amazing year and I hope you had as much fun as me! I am super proud of every single one of you for trying new things and giving everything 110%. I will miss you all very much, but I know great things are coming for Summers in 2024 and beyond. We have such a remarkable and diverse student population, and I am always impressed by what they are able to achieve.
What makes boarding at PLC so special?
Boarding at PLC is so special because we all love and support each other. In our year groups, we have activities which help bring us together sharing stories and the buddy programme links different girls in different year groups together. We have weekly Boarding House meetings on Thursdays called “Notices”, where we get together. The Boarding Prefects ask fun icebreaker questions that everyone has opportunities to discuss, so anyone can answer, get involved, and get to know the person next to them better. Whole Boarding House events such as closed weekends, and themed dinners (for Christmas, Chinese New Year, Easter etc.) are such a fun way to get everybody dressed up and connect with the girls.
What is your favourite Boarding House event, and why?
My favourite Boarding House event would be closed weekend, held the first weekend of the year, where everybody stays in the Boarding House for Saturday and Sunday. Everyone gets divided into groups doing fun activities inside and outside. This gives everyone a chance to have some fun with the girls in their group, and bond over some competitive games!
Imogen Famlonga Senior Boarder
How do the diverse backgrounds of all the boarders enrich the Boarding House community?
The diverse cultures and backgrounds of the Boarding House community allows people from all around the world to come together and learn from each other and teach each other about their cultures and family backgrounds. I think this is very special as we learn so much about different cultures and can celebrate a variety of different cultural backgrounds. Indigenous students, international students, and Australian students are able to teach others about the importance of their cultural history, and to me as an Indigenous girl, I feel so lucky to feel supported, and learn new things every day.
What is your favourite memory from your time in the Boarding House?
My favourite memory from the Boarding House is getting announced as Senior Boarder last year. The feeling of people believing in me, wanting me to be a leader is so special. This whole year working with the prefect team, my year group, boarding staff (Housies) and younger girls has been such a privilege. I have learned so much about leadership, building loving relationships, and about myself. I have adored being Senior Boarder for 2023 and know the Boarding House will continue to be special.

Academic
It is also crucial to keep up with your mental and physical health, give yourself time to do the things you love...
overdo it – you still need to spend time on your academics.
Why do you think it is important to balance your studies with other things in your life, and how do you go about this?
Balancing your studies with other interests or hobbies allows you to recharge and prevent burning out. While academics are important, a well-balanced life allows you to thrive both academically and personally, leading to a more enriching and rewarding overall experience. I go about this by making sure I keep up with my physical health by going for walks or playing sport and by making sure I spend some time with friends and family.
I then feel as if my work is my only focus. Would you rather never be able to listen to music again, or never be able to watch movies again, and why?
I would prefer to never watch movies again. This would be because I spend a lot of my time listening to music rather than watching movies. I listen to music when I study, complete tasks around the house, go for walks etc. I also could never drive without listening to music; therefore, I would say bye to movies over music.

Arts
You can have a nibble, try something else and just have fun getting a taste of everything.
Do you have a favourite area of the Arts and, if so, what makes it your favourite?
My favourite area would have to be the creative arts, specifically, Textiles. Over the years, it has been the highlight of my day to see Ms Lagrange’s face in class! Fashion design is a big passion of mine and something I want to pursue as a career when I’m older.
Who is your greatest inspiration within the field of the Arts?
I’d say my mum is my greatest inspiration within the field of the Arts. She is the most creative person I know, always with so many ideas and she never fails to bring them to life. She is an inspiring businesswoman who has combined her artistic abilities with entrepreneurial skills to build her scarf brand. She has always given me a helping hand and supported me through all my creative projects whether that be building a Barbie Dreamhouse in Year 1 or making a paper-mache rhino for Year 6 Exhibition. I hope to be like her when I’m older, still heavily involved in the Arts.
Tess Marinko Arts Captain
How can other students participate in the Arts and why do you think it’s important for them to get involved?
The great thing about the Arts is that there are so many avenues you could go down and my advice is to jump at opportunities to participate in the Arts as they come. Better late than never! The Arts are like a big buffet breakfast; you can try a bit of everything. You can have a nibble, try something else and just have fun getting a taste of everything. I believe participating and just appreciating the Arts helps us to take life a bit less seriously. We can enjoy the beauty in simple things like our voices, colours, fabrics, facial expressions, and movements, that enrich our life.
Who would you want to act as you in a biopic of yourself?
Phenomenal question. I would have to say Jennifer Lawrence. I think we both have a dry sense of humour and we both say things as they are. Even though a biopic of myself wouldn’t be nearly as eventful as The Hunger Games, I’m sure she’d be able to make my life seem a lot more interesting than it is!

Service
We managed to raise over $38,000 in sponsorship and donated all the hair to make wigs.
Why should we all participate in community service?
Community service helps us all make a positive difference to those less fortunate, allowing for the chance to meet new people and have fun. There are many ways that people can help to contribute to community service, including financial contributions to charities, raising sponsorships through participating in organised fundraising projects, donating goods, or by giving their time to get involved in the many projects that are available.
What makes service unique is that it is solely reliant upon the effort and time of people who volunteer. When you volunteer, you are collectively working towards a goal that will help the lives of others.
What are some of your favourite ways to get involved in service?
Service events that bring together communities are some of my favourites. The World’s Greatest Shave is an amazing event held annually where students cut or shave their hair to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. This year, we had over 50 Senior School students who raised money through various sponsorship to cut their hair, with three incredible students shaving their heads. The Junior School also got involved and made a gold coin donation for the senior girls to braid

their hair. We managed to raise over $38,000 in sponsorship and donated all the hair to make wigs for those who suffer from this disease.
MAD Week saw the launch of a new service project, Reclaim the Void, which required volunteers to weave fabric rugs to go towards a large symbolic artwork, to cover mining holes left uncovered across the outback. The Outback Pack project also returned and many girls spent several lunchtimes collating the goods into 2,500 packs which were then collected and distributed.
What
are some simple things we can all do to help out in our communities?
There are various ways to help in our community. There are many school projects which are run throughout the year, or if you’re involved in a sport, offer to coach or umpire younger age groups. Alternatively, you could sponsor people who are trying to raise funds for good causes or donate any unwanted clothes or furniture to local charity shops, along with local charity fundraising events to get involved in.
Would you rather have the ability to fly or have the ability to become invisible, and why? Invisibility would be so useful!

Sport
Inclusive, competitive, motivated, and fun. There is always an opportunity to be involved.
Tilly Johnston
Sports Captain
Why is sport so important?
Sport is so important as it provides opportunities to develop new skills, connections and lifelong friendships. The mental and physical health benefits that sport brings are so valuable for all ages. Sport helps us grow as leaders, teammates and importantly as people. I love the positive environment that surrounds sport, especially with the community at PLC. Inclusive, competitive, motivated, and fun. There is always an opportunity to be involved. I think it is important to jump at these opportunities because you never know where they might take you!
What opportunities are there for younger students to get involved in sport?
The sporting opportunities at PLC are endless. Most students would agree the annual Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals are definitely highlights. The Junior School students can sign up for Tennis, Running, Swimming, Basketball, Netball, the list goes on! From Year 7 to 12, students can get involved in Inter-School opportunities through IGSSA. The number of sports on offer at PLC is amazing and there truly is something for everyone!
If you were to go to the Olympics for any sport, what would it be?
I would definitely want to compete in the 800m, as it is one of my favourite events. I love the feeling of racing, knowing I have tried my best and seeing my hard work pay off. I have always wanted to try Hockey but after playing my first game ever against St Hilda’s in Term 2, I struggled to hit the ball and left a few dents in the grass. I think it would be better for everyone if I stuck to running!
Which sport do you believe deserves more mainstream attention than it currently receives?
I loved watching the Women’s FIFA World Cup this year, receiving an insane amount of mainstream attention. It was amazing for women’s sport! However, I do think this has taken the spotlight from other world cup events. Including the Australian Netball team, who went on to win the Netball World Cup this year and PLC Old Collegian, Nina Kennedy, who recently became the Pole Vault World Champion after winning at 2023 World Athletics Championships! While the attention and support for women’s soccer is long overdue, the achievements of female athletes in other disciplines are often forgotten. I would love to see female athletes receiving more mainstream attention.

Game tournament. This got all of the Year 7-12s involved versing each other in some competitive and fun games of Bench Game.
What is your favourite memory from when you were in Junior School?
My favourite memory in Junior School is the Year 6 Final Assembly. It was the first time for many of us where we could take the lead and come up with ideas, to showcase to the entire Junior School. The many days spent practising all our skits and perfecting our dances, with the iconic synchronised swimming dance still embedded in my memory today.
you through your first year in high school, so don’t be afraid to ask for help from us!
What is your favourite childhood game or movie?
My favourite childhood game would 100% be 4 squares, having daily competitions in the Junior School. My favourite movie would be Cars, with Mater being my favourite character, or Mamma Mia for all the singing and dancing!

Reconciliation
By appreciating our Elders, we are recognising the hardships and adversity they have faced and their essential resilience in the fight for a better Australia.
Kalani Buckle & Emma Holtham
Reconciliation Captains
Why do you believe that reconciliation is important?
Reconciliation is important as it is the co-operation of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous people together which aims for a more equitable and just society for all of Australia.
What does reconciliation mean to you?
Reconciliation is an ongoing process which aims towards Australian society recognising and respecting the First Peoples of this land, acknowledging past injustices, and ongoing inequalities experienced by Indigenous Australians, and committing to working together towards a more equal and respectful future.
What is your interpretation of this year’s NAIDOC theme?
2023’s NAIDOC theme, For Our Elders, is an opportunity for Australians to acknowledge the role that Elders play in our communities in passing down cultural knowledge and providing guidance for the upcoming generations, as well as learning from our Elders’ experiences, passing on thousands of generations worth of knowledge and culture to the younger ones today. By appreciating our Elders, we are recognising the hardships and adversity they have faced and their essential resilience in the fight for a better Australia.
What actions can we each take to bring about reconciliation in everyday life?
Practising and demonstrating reconciliation every day can be done through:
• knowing the wider and local Australian history
• calling out racism
• creating culturally safe places
• supporting self-determination
• acting to protect First Nations Cultures
• supporting First Nations businesses
• acknowledging country
• caring for country
• and overall, being an ally.

Wellbeing
Looking after your wellbeing involves taking the time to exercise, eat a balanced diet, get sufficient sleep as well as doing the things you love such as a hobby or socialising with friends.
Why should we be looking after our wellbeing?
Looking after your wellbeing is crucial to thrive. You will find it easier to achieve goals, navigate challenges, foster positive relationships, and contribute positively to others’ lives as well and your own. Looking after your wellbeing involves taking the time to exercise, eat a balanced diet, get sufficient sleep as well as doing the things you love such as a hobby or socialising with friends.
What activities do you like to do to improve your mood?
There are many ways to improve one’s mood. Personally, I love listening to music because my hobby is singing, which makes me happy, as well as socialising with my friends or having a good laugh watching a comedy movie. Improving your mood comes from doing activities that bring you joy and excitement but also relaxation. I love swimming and recommend any physical exercise that helps release endorphins and reduce stress. Lastly, finding a hobby such as reading, cooking, painting, or hiking.
Ava Miels Wellbeing Captain
What are some easy things students can do every day to help boost their mental wellness?
Six ways to boost your wellbeing: 1. Drink enough water every day to stay hydrated. 2. Aim for some direct sunlight for Vitamin D every day. 3. Exercise. Take a 15-minute walk with a friend or listen to your favourite music or podcast! 4. Eat healthily and get your 5 a day. 5. Sleep for at least eight hours every night to recharge you to face each day. 6. Get organised through having planners and to-do lists as it helps boost your mental wellness by reducing stress.
Would you rather have a pause, fast forward, or a rewind button in your life, and why?
I would have a pause button because despite my excitement for school to be over and not having to worry about any study, tests, or exams, I know I will miss it all. I will miss it because I love PLC and the excitement that the school brings. I will miss the lunchtime chats, laughing in class, Arts Day, sports carnivals, and the feeling you get from a Bev’s Café hot chocolate. Most importantly I will miss the PLC community because it has impacted my life so positively. I feel I am a part of PLC forever and the friends I have made will be beside me throughout the rest of my life.

Pipe Band
It’s about being a part of this incredible family where we do so much for each other.
We kicked off the year with our annual Vyner Brooke Memorial performance before getting back to the Quarry Concert after it was cancelled last year. The Band then made its way to the Perth CBD for the 2023 ANZAC Day Parade where we made it onto live TV! We then played at one of the most exciting performances the Pipe Band has been a part of… High Voltage! We wowed the audience with our incredible rendition of AC/DC’s ‘Long Way to the Top.’ The rest of the year brought performances including Head of the River, Senior Showcase, and many, many more.
The Pipe Band has been a major part of our lives and we have made lifelong friendships and created a family of pipers and drummers. Waking up every Friday morning to play the pipes and drums in the freezing cold isn’t easy but the people we do it with have made it undoubtedly
and time again throughout the year, and being part of the Band has made our final year at school even more unforgettable.
We would like to thank our absolutely AMAZING tutors Mr McLaren and Miss Kirby for their incredible dedication to the Band and for working so hard to encourage us to play the best we can every time we get our instruments out. Finally, thank you to everyone who is part of the Pipe Band community. We are so sad to be leaving this family behind, but we will come back to Minora every now and then because… once in the Pipe Band, always in the Pipe Band. Pipes and drums, dismissed!
