editors This year, our vision for the Kookaburra was to incorporate and base the theme around the 2017 School motto ‘The Limit Does Not Exist’.

We have represented this motto in the Kookaburra by using a space theme. Space is limitless and reiterates that there are no limits to what PLC girls can do during their life at PLC and beyond. We decided to continue the Year 12 quotes and awards section as they were introduced last year and were very popular among the Year 12s. The quotes and awards allowed the Leavers to incorporate their experiences and memories at PLC. To continue to make the Kookaburra as personal to the Leavers as we could, we involved the Year 12 girls in the voting and creating of the awards. Our hope is that they can look back through the Kookaburra and be reminded of their fun and memorable moments at PLC.

We have also included a few changes to the layout and format of the Kookaburra. Previously, Dr Hadwen, Mrs Anderson, Head and Deputy Prefects, and the Student Council have written an article about their role in the School, however this year, we decided to create interview style questions to provide a more casual style of article. We provided each person with a set of questions regarding their role and a personal question that the PLC community may not know about them. The aim of this was so that the PLC community could learn about the Leader’s role as well adding a personal touch to their section. Thank you to Miss Freel, who has supported and guided us throughout the Kookaburra journey, and to Kylie for organising and helping us with the photoshoots. We have really enjoyed working on the production of the Kookaburra, and can’t wait to share the finished product with the rest of the School. The aim of the Kookaburra is to provide a short snippet of the 2017 PLC life, and we hope that the 2017 graduating girls will look back at the Kookaburra in the future as a reminder of their journey at PLC. We wish everyone in the PLC community good luck for the future, and a huge thank you to the Class of 2017 for making the PLC journey so amazing. Miah Smith and Emma Rose Bougher

“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass... It’s about learning to dance in the rain.” VIVIAN GRE E NE

What have been your top three favourite events of the year? Arts Day is a very special day at PLC, I love that our whole community gets involved, the energy on the day is uplifting. Although we haven’t had Speech Night yet for 2017, this really is an incredible event. It is a true showcase of many of the amazingly talented girls we have at the School. Although it’s not one event, I’ve really loved having the boarding students over for dinner this year. It’s been great to get to know the girls a little better and hear about their homes and families. How have the girls embodied this year’s motto of ‘The limit does not exist’? Our girls have embodied their motto both personally, as individual students and in groups, for example as Year groups, sporting teams, musical groups and interest groups. It’s been a joy to watch the Year 12 girls support each other academically and push themselves beyond what they thought was their limit. Our sporting teams have excelled, the ‘arts’ groups; music, dance and drama have all been exceptional. In addition to working in groups, it has been so rewarding to support individual students as they have worked hard to achieve their personal goals.

What is something about you that none of the girls know? Actually, I’m very much an ‘open book’, there isn’t really much that I think the girls don’t know about me. While I can master walking all day in high heels, there are other skills I’ve acquired over my life that are less obvious for example I have a heavy duty truck licence, have just sold my GSXR 1000 motorbike that I loved riding, obtained my skippers ticket when I was 16, can very capably milk a cow, sheer sheep and muster cattle! What are you most looking forward to next year? Repeating the answer to Question 1. Spending time with the girls. In addition, I’m excited about the PLC Lighthouse opening, it will bring wonderful benefits to members of our School community. I’m excited about the teaching programmes and co-curricular activities that will be offered within the centre for girls and little boys at PLC. I’m also looking forward to continuing to work with our remarkable PLC staff, they are smart, capable individuals who are dedicated to our girls; their commitment is inspiring. Is there any advice you would give to the girls for next year? Take advantage of all there is on offer at PLC. We are all here to support you to be the very best version of yourself. This means being courageous, trying new things, asking questions, letting us know when things aren’t going well (and when they are) and remembering that I believe in you. Do you have any advice for Year 12 leavers? Go get em’girls. You are enough! You don’t need anything or anyone else, you are uniquely talented; use these talents to fulfil your dreams. Remember, once a PLC girl, always a PLC girl.

What has been the most memorable part of this year? Spending time with our beautiful PLC girls. I tell people my work is a little like inviting your children’s friends over for a sleepover – every day. There is such wonderful energy at PLC, our girls are warm, happy, kind and funloving; such a joy to be around.

head prefects Ultimately, leadership is not about a badge or title. Its about impact, influence and inspiration. It’s a way of thinking and a way of acting, but most importantly a way of communicating and relating. Also, never underestimate the power of kindness.

What have been your top three favourite events of the year? Head of the River. I haven’t rowed since Year 10 (Rieley) but PLC Rowing holds a very special place in my heart. The comradery between the girls, coaches, parents and community is always so inspiring to be a part of. ‘Wear It Purple Day’ was an amazing day. We cannot express the pride we felt watching Lily Dixon openly speak to the hundreds of girls and them responding in such supportive and compassionate ways. Speech night; a collective night of singing, dancing, awards and ‘Labore et Honore’ is one of the best events of the year. What was the motive behind the motto ‘the limit does not exist’ and how do you think the girls have taken to this? The limit does not exist refers to the idea that each girl has an incredible amount of talent and at PLC the opportunities presented to us allow for each girl to push their limits. It can be applied to any area of the school and to any girl. What mark do you hope to have left on PLC? We hope to have left PLC girls with the understanding that you can be true to who you are and use that to achieve the successes you want to. We believe we were open with the girls this year on the fact that we’re all prone to make mistakes but more importantly we’re all able to bounce back from these and learn. We hope the girls have finished this year believing in themselves and being proud of who they are. We couldn’t be more thankful for their support. What will you miss most about PLC? We will miss the girls from all year groups, they continually surprise and inspire me. Although we’ll miss seeing the girls in our Year especially; we’ve grown up together for the past five years and they’re all such beautiful girls who will achieve amazing things as they move on. We will miss the leadership of our teachers. The older we’ve gotten the greater respect we have towards them and we are so grateful for their guidance.

Kookaburra 2017

What is a weird food combination that you love? Not particularly weird, but popcorn and maltesers! Is there a message that you would like to give to the girls at PLC? Embrace your strengths and work hard. Understand that while school’s not the end of the world, if you put the work in now everything will be easier later on. Take time to build relationships at School, especially with teachers because these become invaluable in your final years. Expand your friendship groups, get to know the girls around you especially those in different years from you. Rieley Stewart and Meg Anderson

What has been the most memorable part of this year? Junior School Arts Week has been a highlight. There was such a buzz throughout the School as we went from Book Day dress ups, to welcoming our grandparents in their crazy socks and then on to Arts Day with a range of dance, drama, visual arts activities, to culminate with the House choirs and teachers’ skit. While it was a huge effort on the part of the organisers, it was so much fun and there were many who wished it would happen every week! How have you enjoyed getting to know the Junior School students? On a perfect day, I would have no emails and would be in class with the students and their teachers all day. Sadly, there are not many perfect days, but I still endeavour to visit at least one class a day. I enjoy finding out what the students are learning, how they can apply their learning to other situations, and how they

celebrate their achievements. I have also been lucky to have been involved with training the Junior School Cross Country team. What plans do you have for the future of the Junior School? Every day I see evidence of leadership potential among our students. I would like to harness that through developing the student leadership programme by creating more opportunities and recognising students for the leadership and support they show their peers. I would also like to expand the Outdoor Education programme and have started discussions with the Outdoor Education staff about how this might happen. What is something that the girls might not know about you? I love to scuba dive! There are many crocodiles and jellyfish in the waters of the Top End so I didn’t do any diving when I lived in Darwin, but I have dived along the east coast and Victorian waters of Australia, and in some places in Asia. My most memorable diving experience was in the Galapagos Islands where I dived with whale sharks and hammerheads. What are you most looking forward to next year? Welcoming students back from the summer break, hearing all their stories and helping them prepare to start a new year.

KOOKABURRA 2017  |  JUNIOR SCHOOL

How has your experience at PLC been so far? Incredibly rewarding! We have an extremely professional Junior School staff and I feel privileged to be part of the team. I absolutely love working with the students, and have enjoyed the various opportunities to meet many of their parents and carers, and get to know PLC through their experiences. Working in a Pre-K to Year 12 school such as PLC provides me with the opportunity to witness, participate in and appreciate the whole gamut of a wonderfully rich school life.

Captain Report

“It’s the friends we meet along the way that help us appreciate the journey.”

How did you come up with the idea for the vertical House Tutor Groups and what was the purpose of this? The idea came about as I had heard of many other schools using the vertical House Tutor Group system, instead of basing them on year groups. The purpose of vertical House Tutor Groups is that it gives girls from Years 7 to 12 the chance to broaden their friendships past their own year group. Barriers between Year groups are broken down and there are more opportunities for leadership, mentoring, advice and support between the girls. It gives the older girls the ability to share their wisdom and advice with younger girls on anything and everything.

What is your favourite childhood movie? My favourite childhood movie would definitely have to be The Parent Trap with Lindsey Lohan. I’d say that is probably because I’d always secretly hoped I had a long-lost identical twin and loved the idea of going away to an American summer camp. Is there a message that you would like to give to the Junior School and Senior School girls at PLC? Throughout my 14 years at PLC, the one thing I have learnt and the advice I would give to all PLC girls is that you should never give up the opportunity to participate. Our School offers us with some of the most amazing opportunities that you may not get again in your lifetime. But I feel the most important piece of advice I can give is that school is not the be-all and end-all, things come and go and this is one of those things. It all goes by in the blink of any eye; treasure the friends and the memories you make instead of worrying about the final result. Tiffany Evans

KOOKABURRA 2017  |  JUNIOR/SENIOR SCHOOL

What was your aim for this year in building the connection between the Junior School and Senior School, and how did you achieve this? My aim this year was to simply make the Junior School girls feel more comfortable when being around the Senior School girls. Remembering my time back in Junior School, I have fond memories of older girls from the “big school” coming over to visit us. I would always get nervous, yet be oddly excited at the same time. At the end of last year, a large group of the Year 12s went over to the Junior School to get to know some of the Year 6 girls before they came into the Senior School the following year, to ensure when they did transition from the Junior School to Senior School, they knew a few friendly faces.

senior school

Mrs Sharon Anderson “You can’t go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.”

What was the reasoning behind merging the Middle and Senior Schools together? At PLC, we are really keen to personalise everything we do and that includes caring for our girls. Between Year 7 and Year 9 (which was Middle School) for example, girls have a very different set of needs. By pairing the Year groups rather than having them divided into threes, we are able to target where girls are in their developmental journeys and implement programmes and approaches that suit them much more specifically. How do you think the hubs and the new Co-ordinators have helped to guide the girls this year? Working in pairs of Year groups has enabled the Co-ordinators to specialise in a particular phase of development and really be in tune with what their girls need. Dividing the tasks between two or three people has also allowed them to concentrate on one area – pastoral care, learning or wellbeing programme

development. This means that the care we have been able to provide is greatly enhanced. Working closely with another staff member has also meant they have developed close working relationships, which is always a great thing! What do you do take care of your wellbeing? One of my character strengths is appreciation of beauty and excellence. I love the glory of a sunset, being in wide open spaces and looking at the world through the lens of a camera. I like to be physical, too. I practise yoga and enjoy my version of running (my daughters call it the ‘Shazza shuffle’). I also love working hard in my garden. To care for my creative side, I sew and was recently reunited with the lost art of crochet. I also love to lose myself in a good book. Spending time with my family, friends and dog, Mallee, comes pretty close to the top of my wellbeing list! What exciting things have happened to you this year? It’s been a year of ‘firsts’ for me actually. On the personal front, it was my first daughter’s wedding that gave me the greatest excitement - it was at our property in the country so that made it even more special! My appointment as Head of Senior School, attending my first Year 12 Ball and Year 11 Dance and greeting all the girls and their partners were also highlights. Another ‘first’ was the trial of our ‘Everest’ student leadership programme. There have been lots of changes this year and change is exciting, fullstop!

What has been the most memorable part of this year? Oh – so many highlights in this year! One would be attending the Year 7 Outdoor Education Programme at Busselton, and trying really hard to go to sleep in my swag while thunder rattled the ground and lightning sent my group of girls scurrying from their tents through the rain to the hoochy, where I was! That was just a little bit exciting! Another would be watching the 2018 Student Councillors take the ‘leap of faith’ at the Prefects’ Retreat! Both stick in my mind because the girls faced challenges and overcame them.

Academic Captain Report “The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.” VINCE LOMBARDI

What was your aim for this year, and how did you achieve this? My aim for this year was to grow and promote the role of academic achievement within the entire school community and to ensure that each person felt inspired to achieve their own individual best. This was supported by the implementation of study help groups run by

both current and past PLC students in the library every afternoon with the aim of providing individual tutelage and support. In addition, for Year 11s entering their first set of exams, Year 12 students were invited to share their experiences and provide subject-specific tips. This, together with an exam study guide, was aimed at providing advice to students at these crucial academic times. In this process, it has been important for me to continually engage with students from each Year level to gain their input into what additional support is necessary to help them achieve their academic goals. I have also really enjoyed having the opportunity to personally encourage girls who are endeavouring to improve academically. Is there a message that you would like to give to the girls at PLC? To the class of 2017, its been an absolute privilege to get to know you and I wish you all the very best in your future pursuits. To the remaining girls, I have every confidence in your ability to continually grow academically and encourage you all to seek out studies in areas that you love and enjoy. Who was your first celebrity crush? Nathan from Hi-5.

KOOKABURRA 2017  | LEARNING

What have been the highlights of PLC’s academic performance this year? 2017 has been an incredible year for academics, seeing girls achieve outstanding results in the classroom, on an interstate and even national level. This has been demonstrated in PLC’s success in academic competitions such as the World Scholar’s Cup in which PLC received a huge number of individual and team honours, winning 3rd place overall. A team of girls from Year 7 and Year 9 also competed in the National da Vinci Decathlon competition in Sydney and scored some excellent results for the individual sections. The girls have whole-heartedly embraced the vast array of academic opportunities on offer to them, also celebrating successes in the Australian Chemistry Quiz, ICAS Science and Maths competitions, OzCLO, the Tim Winton Young Writers Competition, Tournament of Minds, Have Sum Fun, debating, mock trials and countless other events. It is truly impressive to see the level of dedication and hard work exhibited by so many girls, culminating in over 250 academic awards being given out at the end of Semester 1.

Captain Report “The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.” SYLVIA P LATH

What inspires you about the Arts? I think the most inspirational thing about The Arts is how everyone can connect to some aspect of The Arts, whether it is listening to the music, or reminiscing on your younger days through the dance you see on stage, or even being able to relate to a funny joke told in a play. People are always able to see beauty in The Arts which makes The Arts beautiful in itself. Where are we likely to see you on the stage/screen in the coming years? After the Student Assembly this year, I’m seriously considering a career in rap music. I could be as big as Jay-Z with articulation like mine. In all reality, lets just say, we will have to see what the future holds, but I’m sure you’ll see me on stages near you. I’m open to anything really and just happy I had such a brilliant experience with The Arts during my schooling years.

What’s the worst hairstyle you’ve ever had? Although I ended up with a brilliant hairstyle in the end, I have to say during the process of shaving my head I was left with some brilliant, yet horrifying hairstyles. My favourite one is pictured here, mid shave. I’d like to thank my sister Gabrielle and friend Lilly Smeulders for providing me with such a beautiful haircut. Short lived but let’s just say it definitely wins worse hairstyle ever. Is there a message that you would like to give to the girls at PLC? My best message would be that it is incredibly important to embrace your creative side and don’t be shy to showcase your talents. One of my biggest regrets growing up was not embracing my talents. I have a vivid memory of pretending to sing out of tune in chapel because I didn’t want people thinking I was showing off by singing properly. When I realised that by not sharing my talents I was suppressing my desire to do what I loved, and since that realisation I’ve had some of the best years of my life. Sophie McDonald

KOOKABURRA 2017  | ARTS

What have been the highlights of this year in regards to each of The Arts at PLC? Of course Arts Day was the highlight of not only The Arts at PLC, but the entire School calendar! I had the best day watching all of the girls participate and get involved with their classmates by putting their hand up for everything, whether that be dancing or playing the violin, everyone really put in a great amount of effort, and I was walking around like a proud mother the whole day. Other events included, the Year 10-12 Cabaret At the End of the World, and the Year 7-10’s performing Into the Woods. Annual events such as the Proms Concert, Dance Showcase and the Art Exhibition were also enjoyed by all.

Captain Report

“Every little girl can turn on the TV and have amazing heroes and role models streamed live into their living room. If they can actually see it, they can dream it and believe it and live it.” M I C H E L LE CO WAN

For me personally, PLC coming second overall in IGSSA Cross Country was my highlight of the year. Every girl in the team put so many hours into training, and raced incredibly well. Seeing the whole team out on the course cheering on girls in other Year groups made me proud to be a part of this team. How do you think the girls went in sports this year? Sport in 2017 has been better than ever, Team PLC has flourished wherever. From the river to court or field, Our talent and spirit has been revealed. Every girl has given her best, Proud to wear the PLC crest. Each goal scored and pennant won, Making PLC second to none.

What was your aim for this year, and how did you achieve this? My aim for this year was to encourage as many girls as possible to participate and enjoy sport. Every girl who gets involved with sport, whether it be an A team or an H team, plays her part in the towards the overall Champion School. Every win counts just the same, so whether you want to play competitively or to meet new people I can’t encourage you enough to give it a go! What is your favourite line in Labore Et Honore? Through the Peppermint Grove, my senses come alive… Is there a message that you would like to give to the girls at PLC? The limit does not exist for women in sport, and we should be making the most of that. Girls with talents in particular sports should be encouraged to pursue them and see that sport can be more than just a hobby. Michelle Cowan, the coach of the inaugural Fremantle Dockers women’s team, is the perfect role model of this. We were lucky enough to have her come speak to some senior girls earlier in the year, and she told us how she was continually put down. She was told that no woman would ever be good enough to coach an AFL team, not in her lifetime. Michelle’s persistence was inspiring, and eventually paid off as she was able to secure her dream career as an AFL coach. Michelle is incredibly strong and driven, and someone that all girls interested in sport can look up to. Emily Bradley

What have been the highlights of PLC’s sporting this year? Team PLC has had another wonderful year, with IGSSA pennants in Swimming, Volleyball, Tennis, Hockey and Cross Country. The dedication, commitment and strength of every girl was particularly evident in Rowing, where PLC won the Head of the River regatta, First Eight race and the overall season trophy!

Captain Report

A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.

Besides all the top quality memes, my favourite part has been being able to give a student voice to all the decisions being made so that they’re based around what we want and what we think will work best for us.

How has wellbeing developed over the year and what programmes have been put into place?

There’s definitely a lot more awareness for wellbeing now and there are a lot more activities promoting positive wellbeing (e.g. mental health week). We’ve also been able to put in wellbeing classes for years 7-9 as well as a programme running during HTG once a week for Years 10-12.

What do you envision for the Wellbeing Centre to become?

What is the most embarrassing moment/story from your childhood?

I locked myself in the bathroom when I was four to practise some (excellent) ballet skills, completely forgetting that I hadn’t learnt how to unlock the door yet… Long story short, after some panicking from mum and some pretty great dance moves from me, she called the fire brigade and they had to kick down the door to get me out.

Is there a message that you would like to give to the girls at PLC?

It’s incredibly cliché, but my message is to be yourself. It is honestly the simplest way to be happy and content. Life is too short to be worried about being something you’re not.

Lily Dixon

Hopefully it’ll be the place people think to go to when they need a moment to relax or need help with something. My hope for it is that it’ll be a place that helps to teach people effective strategies to cope when there are stresses and challenges in their lives.

What has been your favourite part of being the Wellbeing Captain?

wellbeing

Ms Laura Allison

“Our greatest freedom is the freedom to choose our attitude.” VIKTOR FRANKL

What was your aim for this year, and how did you achieve this? The Lighthouse was probably the most significant goal for this year. To achieve this, I have needed to really listen and have good judgement to what the needs are, I have been creative and innovative with possible ideas, and courageous and hopeful in seeing these ideas come to life.

What was cool when you were a child but isn’t cool now? Hyper colour shirts and CD walkmans. How do you envision wellbeing and service combining to help the girls? When we act in service to others we feel good, as we are biologically wired to want to tend to others. Service can give gifts such as humility, gratitude and meaning. If we want to build the character of students, then finding a purpose and ways they can contribute to something greater than themselves will truly reveal who they are when they are at their best.

What do you do take care of your wellbeing? I make sure I get enough sleep, schedule time for self reflection, surround myself with quality relationships, laugh (often), and choose to be kind as often as possible including to myself when needed.

KOOKABURRA 2017  |  SERVICE AND WELLBEING

What do you intend for the Wellbeing Centre to become? A space where the practice of wellbeing can be integrated and become part of a normal day for students. Where students can have access to the best curriculum and interventions that will prevent mental illness and promote mental health. I also really hope it is a beacon to promote serious action around youth mental health in education.

service

Captain Report

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” MAHATMA GAN DHI

What role does PLC have in providing service? PLC’s relationship with UnitingCare West continued to strengthen through each term’s appeal: Operation Santa, Winter Warmer Appeal and Women’s Homelessness. The generous response and donations from PLC’s community have been humbling. Free dress days have not only provided good entertainment but have facilitated the ongoing sponsorship of two girls from Mozambique and Kenya to access education and basic necessities. Many girls embarked on service and cultural immersion tours to Cambodia and the Kimberley. What service do you enjoy taking part in? I love taking part in experiences that increase my understanding of the world and the varied challenges faced on a daily basis by those around me. Empowering others and watching them make a difference in the lives of others has been the highlight of my year.

What was your aim for this year, and how did you achieve this? My goal for this year was to increase participation in events and empower others to make a difference through their own passions. This was seen through the wholehearted dedication and immense turnouts through all events, appeals and fundraisers. What’s your secret talent? When I eat nuts, I evolve into a puffa fish. What do you hope the girls will take away from doing service? I hope that through participating in service, girls will broaden their horizons, step outside their comfort zones and ‘pop the bubble’ which we all tend to get caught up in. I hope that the girls will learn about the issues and challenges faced by their peers and others in our community. I have confidence that through participating in acts of service, the girls have and will appreciate that what you give is nothing compared with the immeasurable personal growth, happiness and understanding that will be received. Is there a message that you would like to give to the girls at PLC? As a part of living in this privileged community, the impact each girl can make is massive. As human beings, it is our responsibility to help others through awareness, advocacy and action. The little everyday things we can each do for one another are all acts of service that can make a very real and powerful difference. Ailee Salter www.plc.wa.edu.au

KOOKABURRA 2017  |  SERVICE AND WELLBEING

What have been the highlights of service this year? 2017 has provided a whirlwind of activities and events to which the PLC community has passionately dedicated their time, efforts and skills. The World’s Greatest Shave for the Leukaemia Foundation saw both PLC and Scotch combine to champion this inspiring event with numerous students gifting their hair. Challenges like the 40 Hour Famine, Live Below the Line and Dressless for Refugees have been tackled by the girls. Make A Difference week was especially memorable as the quad filled with advocates for reconciliation, social justice, animal and environmental protection, all contributing to the buzz and ‘readiness to give’ atmosphere the girls continue to create.

Senior Boarder Report Everything happens for a reason.

What initiatives have been put into place in the Boarding House? There was the “Buddy System”, where the Year 12s were paired with a new girl and sent them letters, later acting like a big sister when they arrived. We also had an Easter egg hunt, many themed dinners such as under the sea and where you come from, a Year 12 baby photo competition, Friday night fun night and created a painting of a tree with the leaves being the Boarding family’s thumb prints. How did the Boarding House celebrate National Boarding Week? Throughout the week, we had tours of the Boarding House for all staff and day girls. The School was also photo bombed with images of where we come from and facts about us. On the Friday, there was a quiz on the quad for girls to race around the School and answer questions based on the facts and photos stuck up. On Friday night, we had a games night and on the Saturday night, we watched a movie.

Would you rather live without internet or transportation? I would rather live without internet because with transportation, I would still be able to explore the world and see things for myself, rather than through a screen and just dreaming I was there. What will you miss about boarding? I will miss the family environment, happy atmosphere and tightness of the Boarding House community. I will miss all the familiar faces, the fun activities and living with my friends. I will also miss the nights I have spent in on the weekends, having sleepovers with my friends, watching movies, eating chocolate and dancing horribly to music. What have been the highlights of the Boarding House this year? The highlights have been the closed weekend held on Rottnest Island, National Boarding Week, the very successful Farm2Fork, themed dinners, the Boarders’ Ball at Scotch College that we helped organise, and the Friday night fun night. Is there a message that you would like to give to the boarders at PLC? Make the absolute most of all the amazing and once in a life time opportunities PLC has to offer. I was quite homesick at the start, but it made it a lot easier when I got involved in the activities PLC and the Boarding House had to offer. These all helped to distract me from missing my home and family. Tiffany Gossage

What was your aim for this year, and how did you achieve this? I wanted to encourage a warm, cheerful and inclusive atmosphere where everyone felt respected and valued. A home away from home. I contributed to the Boarding community, organised many activities and made sure I was caring and approachable.

Captain Report “The more we encourage participation, I think the better off we are.”

Write a short statement describing your House Baird participation and determination. What has been your favourite part about leading your House and what have been some highlights? I have had so many great times in Baird House particularly this year. Although I’d have to say the best parts about leading the House is getting to know all the amazing girls. I think that being part of Baird has been a great way the meet girls and form friendship with girls I may have never even met before. Another favourite part of leading my House is the many skills that the position has taught me such as organising people and events. What was your proudest moment for the House? My proudest moment of my House would definitely be Arts day. All the girls put in so much effort and tried their hardest in all they participated in. This resulted in us coming second over all, which was an amazing achievement. I was especially proud watching and listening to the girls preforming House dance and choir. I had seen all the work that had been put in at rehearsals previously and it was extremely rewarding to see all their efforts paid off when it all came together on the day.

Is there anyone you would like to thank? I would like to thank Mr Donaldson, Mrs Venturi and Mr Craze for making all events run so smoothly and their dedication to the House. It was very sad to see Mr Donaldson end his time with Baird, although his House spirit stays strong. Mrs Venturi, although your time in Baird was short, they will be very lucky to have you back. Mr Craze, we have been very lucky to have you step into the role, your enthusiasm is amazing. I would also like to thank Mr Scholten a House Tutor who has stayed with us for longer than a term! Another thank you goes to the House Co-ordinators as well as the Year 12 House Tutor for everything they have done this year. Is there a message that you would like to give to your House? I’d like to thank all the girls in the House for making my time in Baird so amazing. The dedication, House spirit and talent of everyone in the Baird is inspiring. Continue to try you best and give everything a go. What’s the worst thing you’ve eaten out of politeness? A deep fried tarantula leg Asha Manton

“Winning has a value for ego, but participation has a value for life.”

Write a short statement describing your House. Carmichael is all about participation and having fun. Everyone is encouraged to participate in as much as they possibly can, no matter what their ability may be. What has been your favourite part about leading your house and what have been some highlights? My favourite part about being Carmichael House Captain this year has been getting to know all of the girls. I love Carmichael because we are a family, and it has been such a pleasure forming relationships with girls across all years. The highlight of leading Carmichael would have to be House meetings. I look forward to them all week, and I always have a blast (especially the competitive Kahoot games!). The sporting carnivals have also been a highlight, as I’ve loved watching all of the Carmichael girls getting involved and just having a great time. Regardless of whether we came first or last, it didn’t matter, because I was always so proud of my blue family. What was the proudest moment for your House? Definitely winning House Choir! I’ve never been so excited in my life! I was so proud of everyone in the House, especially our choir captain, Liv. We had all worked so hard and it was nice to be rewarded for our efforts. I just wanted to get up and give everyone a huge hug!

Is there anyone you would like to thank? There are so many people I would like to thank for making my role as House Captain a whole lot easier. Ms Letherbarrow, my House Advisor, for being so organised and supportive. My House Tutor teacher, Ms Kaye, for always making me laugh and reminding me to look on the bright side of life. Thank you to all the Tutor teachers across Year 7 to Year 11 for being there to help me whenever I’ve needed it. My beautiful Year 12 Tutor group, thank you for always supporting me and being there to help no matter what; you’re all so special to me. And of course my Carmichael girls…I love you all! Is there a message that you would like to give to your House? To my Carmichael family, you are all so capable, kind and amazing. Thank you for making being your House Captain the highlight of my year. I have loved every minute I’ve spent getting to know you all. Keep getting as involved in the House as you can, and remember that Carmichael is your family. Good luck for your future endeavours, I have no doubt you will all do wonderful things. Tess Bevan

Captain Report

“The road to success isn’t easy to navigate, but with hard work, drive and passion, it’s possible to achieve anything.” TOMMY HILFIG ER

What has been your favourite part about leading your House and what have been some highlights? Getting to know all the younger girls better and watching them develop as young ladies who have gained confidence. As the year went on, more and more girls chucked their hands to participate in events such as Arts Day, the Athletics carnival and Cross Country, which made me so happy because I knew that the more people participated, the greater the chance of Fergo doing well. My favourite part of leading the House was witnessing the enjoyment and collaborations of all the girls regardless of whether or not they’re in the same friendship group or year. What was the proudest moment for your House? At the athletics when multiple girls, dressed in red, stood up to receive Champion and Runner-Up Champion girl. It was so good to see the upcoming years do so well, which shows a bright future for the mighty red house. The whole House got around these girls by cheering as loud as they could when their names were announced. It demonstrated to me the communal love for each other the House shares. Is there anyone you would like to thank? Saunders – who’s been super supportive in everything I do for the House. He always has the right answers for all the questions I ask. Despite the pressure of

House Captain, he would always tame things down and make it easy for me to do my job. His chirpy, fun and loving personality makes our time at PLC so much more enjoyable! Jonesy – His big, friendly smile and witty sense of humour has the girls in stitches, making the day so much more delightful. In every House Tutor Group with him, everyone leaves feeling better than they may have come in, demonstrating what a influential person he is in our time at PLC. Is there a message that you would like to give to your House? Keep your chin up despite the plate you have been served in life. Nothing is as bad as it seems so give everything a go at the best of your ability! Make sure you lighten your load by getting people to help out here and there. Don’t become overwhelmed with being the best of the best when there are opportunities for you to shine in many various ways. Being individual is far from being ‘weird’ or ‘different’. Why be number one, when you can be the only one? If you could be any spread on toast what would you be? Natural Honey, very sweet, enjoyable to eat and can be used to heal wounds of animals.

“The strength of the team is each member. The strength of each member is the team.”

Write a short statement describing your House. Victory or Death. What has been your favourite part about leading your House and what have been some highlights? My favourite part about leading McNeil House this year includes the combination of forming great relationships with younger girls as well as some excellent victories in inter-House events. Being House Captain has given me the incredible opportunity to become closer with all the girls in my House. In particular, as it was their first year of Senior School, I wanted to make sure that the Year 7 McNeil girls knew the ropes around House events and encouraged them to sign up for everything. In turn, I have formed a great bond with them which I believe is important in bringing Year groups together. What was the proudest moment for your House? The proudest moment of my House would have to be this year’s Arts Day. After having an extremely successful year with all the other events, winning Arts Day was a fantastic home run and I was so proud of all the girls. All the effort that went into every event really paid off and it was a great opportunity to see the talents of the girls in the House.

Is there anyone you would like to thank? I would love to thank, Ms Stewart, whose hard work behind the scenes too often goes unnoticed. She never fails to amp up the House spirit and her love for the House and McNeil spirit is contagious. Additionally all of the House Co-ordinators put in many hours and worked so hard this year and achieved some fantastic results. On top of this all the amazing McNeil Year 12s provided unlimited support and energy through this year setting an example for the younger girls in having a go at everything regardless of ability. Is there a message that you would like to give to your House? Keep the streak ;) What is the strangest habit you have? Taking a coffee into every class regardless of the numerous warnings not to. Captain Report “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” H E LE N KE LLE R

What has been your favourite part about leading your House and what have been some highlights? My favourite part is seeing the girls being proud of what they have achieved and trying their best for the House and for themselves. The excitement of being part of a team and knowing that you have a whole group of girls supporting you and cheering for you is amazing. What was the proudest moment for your House? My proudest moment was when the Senior School came 5th at the Athletics Carnival. The effort that went into it and their motivation on the day was so nice to see and I’m so proud of you! Woohoo go girls!

Is there a message that you would like to give to your house? You girls are amazing and as long as you work together and participate in everything and do everything that you can at all the House events, the results will definitely start pouring in! Keep working hard and trying your best and no matter what the outcome is, at least you will know that you gave it your all. What is a weird food combination that you love? Mango and peanut butter! The nutty and slightly salty peanut butter is perfectly balanced by the juicy and sweet mango, it’s actually really good! Sophie Bell

Is there anyone you would like to thank? Thank you to Ms Kidby, who has been our loudest and most enthusiastic supporter! You are so helpful and supportive of me and I really really appreciate it. Thanks to Mia and Emma, you guys are so on top of it and I couldn’t have done it without you at the carnivals. Captain Report

“Friends are the family you choose.” JESS C. SCOTT

What has been your favourite part about leading your house and what have been some highlights? My favourite part of being House Captain definitely has to be hanging out with the younger Year groups, they’re so bubbly and fun. Top two highlights have to be every has been hanging out with the younger years. Highlights have to be every carnival and seeing the insane House spirit from everyone. What was the proudest moment for your House? Watching our house come together and absolutely slay house choir and house dance. I was so proud! Is there anyone you would like to thank? I’d like to thank our amazing House Advisor, Ms. Honeychurch, our Sports Co-ordinators, Julia and Lauren, our Arts Co-ordinators, Lilly, Lily and Georgia and our Media Co-ordinator, Anna Martin.

Is there a message that you would like to give to your House? I only really have one message to give to my house: Don’t only limit your spirit to House activities. Be sure to put the same effort and motivation into everything that you do. Remember, Stewart House is strong, full of spirit and an original. Every Stewart girl is made to be a game changer, no matter what she does or where she ends up. Would you rather give up bathing or internet for a year? I think I would much rather give up the internet for a year, people may say I’d be living under a rock but at least I’d smell good. I’d just have to find someone to keep my snap streaks for me. summers

Captain Report

“Got 99 problems but our House ain’t one.”

Write a short statement describing your House. Power to the Purple. What has been your favourite part about leading your house and what have been some highlights? It has been my absolute honour leading Summers through this year of total domination. 2017 has been too good to be true, from the swimming carnival all the way back in Term 1 to the mammoth Arts Day of Term 3, the Summers girls have absolutely smashed it! My favourite part about leading the House undoubtedly goes to getting to know all of the Summers family, you guys are truly a breed of your own. What was the proudest moment of for your House? My all time proudest moment would have to go to watching all the Summers girls getting down and groovy on stage for House dance on Arts Day. You girls left it all out there on the d-floor and to see you all fearlessly getting super sassy and funky left me in awe. The girls really showed the School what being a Summers girl is all about. The win felt pretty good too :)

Is there anyone you would like to thank? An enormous shout out has to go to Ms Mfune. Your commitment to the House and purple pride is second to none. And of course, thank you to the greatest co-ordinators on earth! Liv and Emma, you have led our Summers sports with absolute precision, the House couldn’t ask for more. To Angelica and Izzy, thanks for being so utterly dedicated you have made our 2017 Arts Day so amazing. And finally Lauren and Katherine, thank you both for your killer organisation and can do attitudes. Is there a message that you would like to give to your House? To all the Summers girls, a massive thank you for an absolutely amazing year! Your endless spirit and one hundred percent commitment to all we have accomplished as a House has been utterly extraordinary. Good luck for 2018, I know the House will continue to have major success! And congratulations to our new Summers House Captain for 2018, Selena Ballesteros. I can’t wait to see you leading the House to another year of victory. Would you rather live with unlimited sushi or tacos? 100% for tacos. Claire Fitzgerald

pushing You can only know the world by pushing against it. Feet placed flat, leaning into it, just a touch at first so it knows you exist. Despite what you hear it is not indifferent, just needs you to make this first act of touch. It may still slip you into a crevasse, wipe you out by a rare virus, or may smile allowing you to know its contours, hidden clefts, back rows. Do not take it personally. Just take these as lessons in the world where you learn what you will put up with, and if the moon is sufficiently inclined, perhaps discover something extinct alive that refuses to bend with the wind, to nod when spoken to, or be pleased with the sheer gratitude of being left alone.
