We have represented this motto and OCA anniversary throughout the publication by deciding on a theme inspired by past Kookaburras, emulating the aesthetic of an old Australiana-styled journal to capture the adventure and journey of the PLC community. To achieve this aesthetic, we decided to include archival images, symbols and drawings found in previous publications of the yearbook. Notably, the illustration of a kookaburra on the front cover of this year’s edition was also featured on the cover of the 1917 edition. This inclusion of archival elements, paired with current images, provides a clear link between the past and future of the PLC community. Throughout the year, we were faced with many challenges, specifically as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sadly due to the disruptions caused by the pandemic, we were unable to include tours in the Beyond PLC spread featured in previous publications. Being involved in the creation of the 2020 Kookaburra has been a privilege and a learning experience for the both of us. We would like to thank Ms Gemma Freel, Mrs Bianca Venturi, Ms Kylie Yacopetti and the Communications and Engagement team for supporting and guiding us throughout this crazy year. We have loved being a part of this journey and can’t wait to share the finished product.

HARPER SHEPHARD & BELLA LIDDELOW

The aim of the Kookaburra is to highlight the memorable moments of 2020 across all areas of the PLC community, and we hope that this edition will be something for all students and staff to look back on fondly. Thank you to the Class of 2020 for making our time at PLC unforgettable. We wish everyone the best for the future.

MS CATE BEGBIE

Principal's REPORT

W H AT WA S YO U R FAV O U R I T E SUBJECT IN SCHOOL? WHY? My favourite subject at school was History. I studied both Modern and Ancient History in my last two years of school and had I not become a teacher, I dreamt of being an archaeologist. Thucydides’ “History of the Pelopennesian War” was probably my favourite text in my final years of school and my additional unit in Modern History allowed me to explore European History between the world wars. I loved everything about History and mostly that it provided a background for the world today. I found it remarkable to learn about the major events that shaped the world as I knew it. I think it was the study of History that gave me an appreciation for that ‘world as I knew it’. I would also give my teachers the credit for my love of History, Mr Porter and and Mr Ridgwell both lived and breathed History and it came across in their teaching. All of these years later, I don’t remember ever not looking forward to their History lessons. W H O I S YO U R B I G G E S T I N S P I R AT I O N ? My grandma has definitely been the biggest inspiration in my life. She passed away at the age of 97 in in 2006, but her words and my memories of her had a lasting impact on me. My grandma was a woman before her time and she believed that women had a right to have aspirations and follow their passions. I was the youngest grandchild and the only granddaughter on either side of our family, and my grandma never allowed me to consider that I wouldn’t go to university and have a career. My family didn’t have a lot of money and she supported me emotionally and financially through those years and I will be eternally grateful to her. She was also a woman who had high expectations and made me

take responsibility for my behaviour and actions from a young age. She instilled in me from a very young age that I was responsible for my own decisions and actions, that I should always own those and never make excuses. Even the thought of her all these years later puts a smile on my face; she was an incredible woman. W H AT H A S B E E N YO U R H I G H L I G H T FOR 2020? In a year that has come with its challenges, I can reflect on many highlights but most of them come back to one theme, ‘community’. This year, I have seen so many wonderful examples of our community coming together to support each other. In a year that could be remembered for everything we ‘didn’t have’ I have been immensely proud to have been a part of a community that could see through this to what we ‘did have’ and what was truly important – each other. Staff, parents and students came together in way that I doubt they have ever had to before. Our Year 12 students in particular have impressed me every step of the way. No one could blame Year 12 students for feeling that there were rites of passage and events that were missed or were not as they had been for the girls who went before them. It has been a privilege to walk alongside our Year 12 cohort as they have navigated this year with such grace and positivity. I am sure that the girls will never forget this year, and I will never forget how well they led our school through this year.

KOOKABURRA 2020 THIS YEAR IS A SPECIAL YEAR FOR THE P LC O L D C O L L E G I A N S ’ A S S O C I AT I O N AS WE TURN 100 YEARS OLD. It’s hard to imagine this association has been around for 100 years. What makes it so special are the Old Collegians that make up the OCA and their love and passion for their school that has not faltered for more than 100 years. As graduates of PLC, you become Old Collegians and members of the Old Collegians’ Association, so, I would like to welcome all the 2020 year 12 graduates to the OCA. The OCA exists to nurture the ongoing relationship between former students, and with the School, through hosting events and activities that promote PLC values, benefit the School community, and offer lifelong learning opportunities. The OCA hopes to provide leadership through example. We aim to do this through our Inspiring Women’s programme. Many Old Collegians have been invited to speak at PLC. Artists, fire fighters, film makers, an orthopaedic surgeon, barristers and a community service innovator. I hope some of you will be back one day to inspire PLC’s students. As part of the OCA you will always feel connected and welcomed to the School, and it will help you remain in contact with your friends and classmates. The OCA, also aims to support Old Collegians’ professional development. We run networking breakfasts with Scotch College Old Scholars, featuring speakers in many different areas of business. There is a mentoring programme to connect with experienced Old Collegians for guidance and more information about your career path. One of the OCA’s main objectives is to give back and further the educational objectives of the School. We have done this in the past with donations that have purchased the Year 12 Common Room, a rowing boat and a STEM room. The Annual Art Exhibition raises vital funds to support the School community and achieve this objective; it also engages the OCA network, and is a popular event for the local community. Of course, the strength of the OCA depends on the engagement of our members. Volunteering to assist with OCA with events and activities is an opportunity to participate and give back to the PLC community. We hope to see PLC graduates at some of our events in the years to come. The PLC family will always be with every PLC girl.

PREFECTS W H AT W I L L YO U M I S S M O S T A B O U T SCHOOL?

I F YO U C O U L D H AV E D I N N E R W I T H ANY CELEBRITY WHO WOULD IT BE?

We will miss seeing everyone every day because that is a highlight of school for us. School for us is like a big family holiday, it has its ups and downs, but in the end you always come away with great memories because the whole family was there. Our favourite parts have to be the Banana Bread from Bev’s, the amazing teachers and their commitment to our education, the energy from all the girls and lastly, random fun things that happen on a daily basis. The Year 12 Locker room meme board included.

We would have dinner with Steve Irwin and Colin Firth. If we were with Steve, we would ask him if he ever considered doing a collab with David Attenborough and if he said no, offer to direct it. We would take Steve to a Teppanyaki restaurant because its wild and energetic, which we would guess, is his vibe. If we were with Colin Firth, we would take him to Hungry Jacks and order him a Frozen Coke as he has probably never experienced this Australian culinary icon. We would ask Colin if his character, Harry in Mamma Mia, is the father of Donna’s daughter, Sophie. WE NEED ANSWERS!

W H AT I S YO U R A D V I C E F O R N E X T YEAR’S YEAR 12S? Three simple things: 1. Find a reason to smile every day (Hint: try Mr Mac’s lollie stash). 2. Teachers are your ticket to success (Hint: if you’re not sure, just ask!) 3. Always give it a go, you’ll never know if you don’t go (Hey now, you’re an All Star get your game on, go play- Smash Mouth’s ‘Allstar’. W H AT WA S YO U R F U N N I E S T M E M O R Y FROM THIS YEAR? On the day we found out that IGSSA Swimming wasn’t going ahead, the Year 12 Team decided to head to North Cott beach with the food that was meant for Swimming Afters (really good brownies) and held our own novelty events. Steph and Holly had a meltdown but it was a quick fix thanks to the brownies. We got a few strange looks from beachgoers as about twenty girls dressed in PLC Bathers sprinted into the water and began furiously swimming a very intense race. I think it’s safe to say that those people won’t see a spectacle like that again anytime soon.

My favourite part of Junior School was playing lots of sport - every recess, every lunch and every Friday afternoon. I strengthened my relationships with my teachers and friends. I still have some friends from my time in Junior School and that was a long time ago!

Green Eggs and Ham, Where is the Green Sheep, the Lorax, the Harry Potter series and Wonder.

W H AT WA S YO U R FAV O U R I T E M O M E N T OF 2020 IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL? My favourite moment was when we were finally able to reopen the playgrounds after the COVID closure. The pure joy was palpable. The noise was like nothing I have heard, but it was just joy. It really summed up what children love about school - playing with their friends! We got to know how important human contact is to all of us.

When international borders reopen I am looking forward to getting back to Tokyo and immersing myself in the culture, art galleries and food of Japan – as well as cheering on my baseball team, the Yakult Swallows, at a match. However, my absolute favourite place in Tokyo is the TeamLab Borderless museum. This museum features digital immersive artwork and it is an experience like no other. In the museum guests are encouraged to wander, explore and discover. The artwork itself moves across walls from room to room and there is always something new to see and interact with. W H AT WA S T H E B E S T PA R T O F YO U R F I R S T Y E A R B A C K AT P LC ? Returning to PLC this year has really felt like coming home. The buildings have changed a lot since I was last here, but the people have stayed the same and are really what make the School so special. I have loved being able to reconnect with my colleagues and the opportunity to get to know as many Senior School students as I can. The girls at PLC are confident, creative, dedicated and have such a special relationship with their teachers. They really embody the School motto and the School values in all that they do. I have also loved teaching my Year 11 Media

Production and Analysis class and being in the classroom with them is the highlight of each of my days. Of course, another highlight from my first year back would have to be Arts Day. I love this showcase of the Arts and the way that everyone gets involved – though I think I will have to keep working on my dance moves for the Staff act! Finally, the thing that I had missed the most was hearing the Pipe Band play. It is something that is just so uniquely PLC and I never get tired of hearing them play. I think PLC is a very special school and I feel honoured to have the opportunity to return. W H O I S YO U R FAVO U R I T E M O V I E DIRECTOR AND WHY? While I have many favourite movie directors, my absolute favourite would have to be Wes Anderson. As an auteur, he creates a very idiosyncratic style in his films. Visually, he creates a highly stylised aesthetic through his carefully considered colour palettes and strong use of symmetry. Wes Anderson also features music mainly from the 60s and 70s including music from one of my favourite bands, The Kinks. From a narrative perspective, he often features children acting like adults, as well as adults acting like children. This interesting play on character really showcases the talents of his actors and it makes for very entertaining viewing. I think Wes Anderson has it right, as at PLC I have met many children who really are wise beyond their years.

W H AT I S YO U R FAV O U R I T E PA R T OF BEING IN BAIRD?

If I could live anywhere in the world it would definitely be New Zealand. Not only is New Zealand one of the most beautiful countries in the world, it’s also my home. All 36 of my cousins, 15 aunts and uncles and 6 grandparents come from a small(ish) town in the south island called Dunedin. Dunedin is full of life and fun but also has some of the most gorgeous landscapes you will ever see. You definitely won’t get bored in New Zealand because there is a new place to visit every weekend. Dunedin also has the perfect combination of Summer and Winter weather perfect for a day in the snow or a trip to the beach, depending on what you feel like doing.

There are so many awesome parts of being a Baird girl it’s hard to name just one so I’ll name three! Firstly, the love and support you get when you are surrounded by the sea of orange is electrifying. The roar that comes from the Baird stand is overpowering and pushes you to jump a little further or swim a little faster. Secondly, I love the competitiveness of the House. We may not win everything but we definitely give the other Houses a run for their money. Last but not least, one of my favourite things about being in Baird is being able to wear the bright orange shirt. Although some may say otherwise, the orange stands out and looks incredible when everyone comes together. It’s such a fun colour to wear!

H OW WO U L D YO U D E S C R I B E T H E G I R L S IN BAIRD? If you ever need an enthusiastic, competitive, fun girl look no further than the Baird girls. The girls in Baird give everything a go and never let anything deter them from having a good time. The love and support you get when you first become a Baird girl is overwhelming. They scoop you up pull you into their family without hesitation. They always take part in everything they can and always support one another. They are fun, competitive and allaround beautiful girls that I am definitely going to miss.

Carmichael CAPTAIN REPORT

I F YO U R S C H O O L L I F E WA S A S O N G, W H AT W O U L D I T B E ? Because of COVID-19 restrictions I may not be able to “sail my way to China” but what I am going to do is let nobody “break my stride”. This song, by Matthew Wilder resonates with me as I reflect on my school experience. It hasn’t always been easy, but with resilience and a positive attitude, it’s certainly been a fulfilling ride. Being a PLC student has taught me that nobody can “break my stride” and that when the going gets hard, “you’ve got to keep on movin”. W H AT A R E S O M E O F YO U R H I G H L I G H T S FROM THIS YEAR? Of course the obvious highlights are seeing Carmichael girls cheering and supporting each other in interhouse events including the swimming carnival and inter-house sports. For me personally, a highlight was the opportunity to connect with the girls in House meetings and hopefully providing them with some fun and laughter through leading activities like the Pitch Perfect riff offs and participating in practice sessions for Arts day. My hope is that I have helped in some way to support the girls to shake off some of those feelings of confusion and loneliness that they may have felt

during the time spent away from school. It has been a crazy year, and I had expected to have a list a mile long of highlights, but what this whole experience has shown me is that it is not being the best and winning that determines the high points of your life, but the connections you make along the way. W H Y A R E YO U P R O U D TO B E I N CARMICHAEL? Where should I begin? Although we haven’t had the opportunity to showcase our many talents on the sporting field, I have been overwhelmed by the resilience of the girls and their enthusiasm in making the most of this situation. From the very beginning of the year, seeing everyone at the swimming carnival give it a red hot crack showed me their true Carmichael House spirit. My faith in our House spirit was reinforced on Arts Day. While a few technical issues could’ve derailed us, we managed to maintain our enthusiasm and excitement for this special day. I have loved the way we maintained contact throughout the isolation period and seeing the girls support each other through small acts of kindness has made me feel proud to be the Carmichael House Captain for 2020.

Ferguson CAPTAIN REPORT

W H AT ’ S YO U R FAV O U R I T E T H I N G T H AT I S R E D? EG. FO O D, C LOT H E S, O B J EC T E TC.

W H AT W I L L YO U M I S S M O S T F R O M SCHOOL?

My favourite thing that is red, has to be a Kit Kat. It is an iconic symbol of the Ferguson house. This is because whenever there was a prize to hand out it would be a Kit Kat. As a Year 7, I would always try my best at House events so I could try and win the Kit Kat. Also, as a lover of chocolate and the red packing it is by far one of the best red things.

There are a lot of things that I will miss most about PLC, however, one major aspect I will miss is my Year 12 House Tutor Group. We are a really odd bunch of girls, however, throughout the years we have really bonded as a group and I have made some really good connections and friendships. I love seeing them every morning before school, whether we are talking about our weekend plans, planning a House Tutor party or trying to learn a dance for Arts Days. Competing together in House events has been a real joy, while we try to have a lot of fun but are still are a very competitive team and give it our best. I have always been able to laugh with these girls and I will miss this very much. I am very fortunate to be able to have such a great group of girls to go through schooling with.

W H AT I S T H E B E S T PA R T A B O U T B E I N G IN FERGO? To me, the best part about Ferguson is the “can-do attitude” that all of the girls bring to the House and House events. Throughout the year, as we have had to do a lot of sign-ups for events with in the House, it has been amazing to see many girls sign up for all different types of events, even if it wasn’t their strong suit. From singing at Arts Day, running the 1,500 or swimming the 100m swim. This “can-do attitude” has led the House to many victories and has encouraged the girls in the House to participate. It has been an honour to see so many girls this year give everything a red hot crack and amazing to see the girls succeed when trying new things.

A motto that I live by; #yolo (you only live once!). Luckily you have been sorted into the most magnificent House, the perfect place to put #yolo into practice. I urge you to give everything a go and push your limits. Endeavour to make people laugh even if you embarrass yourself, have a crack at the 1,500m at Aths (carnival) despite your inability to walk up the stairs without puffing, lead your House Tutor Group dance on Arts Day. Who cares if you have two left feet? You only have one chance, so make it good.

W H AT D O E S M C N E I L M E A N T O YO U ? McNeil makes me smile. It is a House to make memories and build friendships, be yourself and break boundaries. Seeing a yellow swimming cap flying down the pool giving it their all, no matter their position means the world to me. I can’t express how honoured I am to have lead a House so ready to give anything a go. Mahatma Gandhi once said: “Satisfaction lies in the effort, not in the attainment. Full effort is full victory.” That is how we like to measure our success as a House. When we come together as one and put in our full effort is when we are strongest. Victory or Death is a marvellous motto but perhaps too dangerous to take literally. In McNeil, we measure our victory as Gandhi so wisely said, through our girls being ready to give anything and everything their all. I wish all future McNeillian’s the best of luck. Victory or Death!

I don’t think I’ll ever forget our smashing Arts Day performance this year, nor will I ever stop bringing it up! Arts Day, to me, was such an amazing reflection of how unified Ross has become, and how much of a family we are. Watching all of the girls in Ross go out and give everything their all, and to devote so much time in the lead up to the day practising, was such a proud moment for me. I’ve always felt like Ross was this little family, united in everything we did, and on Arts Day we really did feel like an unstoppable force. That obviously came as a result of the dedication and commitment of every single girl, and my heart was so full after seeing everyone try their absolute best. After it was announced that Ross won House dance, Prudence in Year 7 looked at me and laughed, she said “Liz, it looks like you’re about to cry”, She was right… I did. W H AT I S YO U R FAV O U R I T E PA R T O F B E I N G IN ROSS? The community, hands down. Ross is still finding its feet as a new and relatively small House, but none of us have ever let that get in the way of cheering our hearts out at every House event and supporting one another. It’s something I noticed ever since Year 7, and it's why I truly

have loved every second of being in this amazing House. There is such a supportive vibe that has made everything much less daunting; through everything I’ve participated in, I know that I have this amazing family standing behind me no matter what I do. That has always been the coolest feeling in the world. W H AT H AV E YO U L E A R N T B E I N G R O S S H O U S E C A P TA I N ? I’ve realised that you can learn something new from everyone you encounter. I truly believe that I’ve learnt something new, whether about myself or about the world, from every interaction I have had with the amazingly diverse group of girls in Ross. I love talking, that’s no secret, but being able to have some really interesting and fun conversations with all the girls this year has really made me love it even more. Never doubt your ability to make a meaningful impact in someone’s life, even if it is just through a conversation with them. Being Ross House Captain this year has definitely taught me to value every single conversation I have.

I feel extremely lucky to have been given the opportunity to lead this green team, filled with the most passionate, motivating and kind group of young women. The amazing support and encouragement that the girls share with one another has led our team to do their absolute best. The two major things that I learnt this year from being House Captain would be: Just roll with it and let people help because they usually want to. Things have been quite difficult this year due to COVID-19 so I wasn’t able to do a lot of things that I wanted to do as House Captain. As a result of this I learnt to just roll with what was happening and adapt to the new situation I was in. I had to find new ways to get to know the girls in Summers as well as make everyone feel as though they were still part of the amazing Summers House. You go through times of being incredibly busy as a House Captain and the best way to get through this and get everything done in time is to ask for and accept help. There were always so many people who were willing to give a helping hand, and I soon realised that the more help you get, the more enjoyable a job can be.

The more people who participate in House activities, the more included people feel, which leads to far greater House spirit and pride. Everyone feels included and therefore accountable for the success and happiness of everyone in Summers. W H AT I S YO U R FAV O U R I T E PA R T A B O U T BEING IN SUMMERS? I truly think my favourite part about Summers is the spirit and inclusiveness. It is so hard to explain the immense spirit that every Summers girl has for the House and I don’t think that I will ever encounter this kind of devotion and enthusiasm for the rest of my life. I have always felt such a connection to Summers. I am not sure if it is just because I came to PLC in Year 7 and started to make the relationships that I have with my HTG, but they have definitely become a small family to me. I also love how the younger girls in Summers are always supported by the older girls and as you start to grow older, you start to become the one who supports the younger girls. I have always felt so included in the Summers House and I wouldn’t change that for anything.

ACADEMIC CAPTAIN REPORT

W H AT I S YO U R FAV O U R I T E S U B J E C T ? I do the IB Diploma and of my six subjects, my favourite is definitely the Geography HL course. I love how the course brings together human geography, economics, politics as well as consideration for social and environmental issues. We investigate relevant and global case studies which has expanded my understanding of different cultures, societies and global trends and challenges. W H AT A R E YO U R B E S T S T U DY T I P S ? I think we can all agree the biggest barrier to study is procrastination, so I have some tips from my last six years of high school on how to tackle procrastination in all its forms! My best tip is just start. Sit down and plan to do ten minutes of work. At the end of those ten minutes you will either be on a roll and you’re past the struggle of actually sitting down, or maybe your head just isn’t in the right space and you can finish at the end of that time knowing that’s ten minutes more study than you would’ve done otherwise. The hardest part is always getting started! Next, I personally love the satisfaction of ticking off boxes once I’ve finished a task, however, sometimes this leads me to poorly prioritise my tasks and fall into the trap of “productive procrastination”.

I believe it is especially important to prioritise your tasks either according to when tasks are due or starting with the tasks you want to do the least. While you might be ticking off the same number of boxes at the end of the day, you will feel much more satisfied having dealt with the hardest tasks! W H AT W E R E P LC ’ S A C A D E M I C ACHIEVEMENTS THIS YEAR? Many of the external inter-school academic competitions that PLC usually participates in such as Da Vinci and Inter-school Debating were cancelled this year, however, that didn’t hold back our great academic talent from being showcased. Many girls trained throughout the year for The Ethics Olympiad and Mock Trials, as well as Inter-house Debating and Public Speaking. The Inter-house Academics competition ran in Term 4 of last year and the Kahoot format was a fun and collaborative way for everyone to participate. Congratulation to Ross House who won the Inter-house competition! The biggest academic achievement of the year was the flexibility and openness of all the girls as they shifted to remote classes and continued to work hard throughout this year.

My family and I ensure that we use the least amount of plastic possible (and absolutely no glad wrap!) and we take our Keepcups everywhere we go! We have a worm farm and compost all our food scraps. Additionally, whilst we are not vegetarian, we eat meat in moderation. Aside from this, I am on the board of an NGO called Millennium Kids. Here, I participate in a number of initiatives from tree planting to leading and organising the first in the world, youth-led citizens’ assembly. Most excitingly at school, with the help of my peers, we have organised waste audits and developed processes to reduce our waste consumption. We have educated the community through movie nights and assemblies. Finally, we have supported organisations which plant trees through our Free Dress Day fundraiser. I believe it’s all the little things that stack up to help our world become more sustainable. We all play a role and have the opportunity to improve our habits to become more sustainable.

Wellbeing CAPTAIN REPORT

W H AT H A S B E E N T H E B E S T PA R T O F B E I N G W E L L B E I N G C A P TA I N ?

I could seriously answer this question in 100 different ways, but when talking about wellbeing, I find that the buzzword ‘balance’ always finds its way into the conversation as it encompasses so much. It means a balance between your school life and your social life, healthy food and your guilty pleasures, as well as taking the tough days knowing that for the most part the rest are super amazing. So I think maintaining wellbeing is all about having a positive perspective, being grateful, and maintaining a good balance.

I think that the best part of being Wellbeing Captain has been sharing my personal approaches to maintaining wellbeing and establishing it not as a superficial concept but as a lifestyle. Wellness can express itself in so many different ways, whether this be through cooking, sports, yoga, meditation, healthy eating, or self-care. I’ve loved being part of spreading such an important message.

W H AT I S YO U R FAV O U R I T E T H I N G TO DO TO RELAX? Morning beach walks and cooking! I find that these are my favourite ways to start and end my day. They act as my much-loved breaks. The walks wake me up in the morning and give me a chance to catch up with friends along with a little SUP coffee (a must). I find cooking so therapeutic, plus I get the most amazing reward out of it, food that I can share with family and friends.

Junior School / Senior School CAPTAIN REPORT

W H AT WA S YO U R FAV O U R I T E M E M O R Y FROM PRIMARY SCHOOL? My favourite memory from primary school is swimming at my first swimming carnival in Year 3. I was so nervous because I hadn’t done very well in our trials, so my goal was just to make it to the end of the pool. I remember getting half way down the pool and suddenly every time I took a breath the girl next to me was further and further behind me. When I finished the race, I had no idea that I’d won but was so excited when I was ushered onto the first place block. All my friends and the other kids from my House were cheering for me, making me feel very proud and a part of a team W H AT WA S T H E M O S T I M P O R TA N T T H I N G YO U L E A R N T T H I S Y E A R. The most important thing I’ve learnt this year, as cliché as it sounds, is that we can get through anything together. This year is definitely not what I expected my final year of school to be like, however, I think it’s taught me so much about the importance of togetherness and teamwork. Obviously, moving to online schooling and not seeing my friends made me realise how much I value spending time with them and how important they are in my everyday life, but it also showed me how when we come together we can overcome most issues. We adapted to the

situation handed to us, moving meetings and catch ups to Microsoft Teams calls and introducing things like ‘The Panama’ to ensure our incredible PLC community stayed connected. The entire PLC community worked together and we emerged on the other side of quarantine, I believe, as a stronger community. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE COMPONENT O F B E I N G J U N I O R / S E N I O R C A P TA I N ? My favourite part of being JS/SS Captain has been getting to know girls in so many different years and making new friends all the way from Year 1 to Year 12! One of my favourite activities was when the Year 12s had lunch with the Year 1s and 2s in the Junior School. The little girls were so energetic and crazy, it was impossible not to laugh around them. It was good fun to get away from the stresses of Senior School and just talk about our favourite TV shows from when we were in Years 1 and 2. This year I’ve also been able to spend time with the Year 7s through the Big Sister programme. It was so great to see both the Year 12s and Year 7s gradually become more comfortable with each other and build friendships. I hope that Big Sister provided all the girls with the opportunity to build relationships that will stay with them for life.

Sports CAPTAIN REPORT

W H AT W E R E YO U R S P O R T H I G H L I G H T S THIS YEAR? This year it wasn’t the big events that I enjoyed the most, but instead the smaller trainings and games as I got to see all the girls working their hardest and pushing each other to be better. It was all the early morning IGSSA trainings where girls would wake up and train in the pitch black, sometimes in not the most favourable weather, and work their hardest to improve that I enjoyed the most. I also really enjoyed going down to Junior School trainings as I loved seeing the younger girls getting involved in sport and it’s great to see the talent we have coming through the Junior School. Ms McGurk and Ms Harris do such a great job preparing for Senior School sport as well as fostering the girls love for sport. Thank you to all the girls who have participated in sport this year, I have loved all the laughs I have shared with everyone this year and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Team PLC! Finally, I want to say a massive thank you to Ms Turnseck-James and the whole PE department for everything they have done this year. Thanks for being so supportive of me, even when I eat all your chocolate. You guys are my second family, so thank you for doing what you all do. You’re the best!

W H Y D O YO U E N J OY D O I N G S P O R T ? I love sport for a few reasons. Firstly, I love the rush of adrenaline you get after you win a Grand Final, or the joy you feel when you cross the finish line in first place. There is no other feeling like that for me, a feeling of pure joy. Secondly, I love the lessons sport teaches us. I truly believe sport can teach us all a lot about ourselves and it can prepare us for challenges we may face in the future. It teaches us how to be resilient when things don’t go our way and how to commit to something bigger than ourselves, because there are times when you just don’t feel like waking up at 5am for the fifth day in a row, but you do it because you know you’re a part of something bigger than yourself. Finally, I love the friendships and opportunities that I wouldn’t have if I didn’t play sport. Some of my closest friends I have made through playing sport. There is a certain bond you develop when you have experienced the highs and lows of a sport together with someone else, that you can’t break. I have also travelled to some cool places that I definitely wouldn’t have been if it wasn’t for sport. Boarders CAPTAIN REPORT

ADVICE FOR NEW BOARDERS My advice to any new boarders coming to PLC would be to come into boarding with an open mind. When I first came, I remember being told I would be pushed out of my comfort zone; It was so true! If you are open minded, you will feel appreciated and encouraged to be yourself no matter the activity! Everyone is different and this is what makes our boarding community so unique. It’s important to get involved in as many activities as you can as well. At PLC, we are presented with so many opportunities that you may never get again, so take them on and enjoy it, make the most of your boarding years! FAVO U R I T E M E M O RY O F B O A R D I N G My favourite memory of boarding would be the 2020 boarders’ closed weekend, specifically the Friday night bush dance where we were taught some funny, crazy and traditional bush dances. I loved it because being with the entire Boarding House in one place at the same time all doing the same things was great. This carried over to Saturday when we did an ‘amazing race’. This weekend was my favourite memory because I learnt so much about so many of our amazing boarders which is the most important thing to me about in my role as

Head Boarder this year. It was such a special memory for me, and I will always cherish the girls and families that make up our boarding community. HIGHLIGHT OF THE YEAR My highlight from this year would be the amazing girls that make up our boarding community. It has definitely been a highlight getting to know many of our PLC boarders. Spending time with different Year groups makes me realise how diverse we are as a community and more about our boarders. I have felt so privileged and honoured to be Head Boarder and get to know these amazing girls. I have felt warmed by every personality in our Boarding House and have learnt so much from all over the world, different cultures, different traditions and different lifestyles. I have learnt the true value of being connected and the importance of this and I now know what makes our community so special! In addition to our lovely girls, it is Ms Langdon and the staff who have made this whole year one big highlight. They hold us up, support us and care for us 24/7. I’ve been so lucky to call this place my home!

W H A T D O E S G O R N A L I YA R N M E A N T O Y O U . The name Gorna Liyarn is derived from the Yaruwu and Bardi languages in the Kimberley region. It roughly translates to ‘Strong Heart Strong Spirit’. The name was chosen by previous Indigenous students at PLC, as many of them came from that area. The students embody the Gorna Liyarn meaning by realising their potential and sharing their cultural knowledge with the PLC community. W H AT H AV E B E E N T H E H I G H L I G H T S O F T H E G O R N A L I YA R N G I R L S T H I S Y E A R ? Highlights of 2020 include Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week. The Reconciliation Captains, Sophia Short and Abbey Noble, created some great activities for students to participate in. Although there were COVID-19 restrictions in place, they came up with fun ideas that could be run within the smaller House Tutor groups. This year, the girls also made a stand with the Black Lives Matter Movement. The Gorna Liyarn girls facilitated an event to create a platform for students to speak on the issue, educate others and share their own personal experiences. It was powerful and moving to see how many students came down to support the BLACK LIVES MATTER event and show an interest in learning more about how the Black Lives Matter movement is relevant to Australia.

W H E N A R E YO U M O ST P R O U D O F T H E G O R N A L I YA R N G I R L S This year I was most proud of the Gorna Liyarn girls when they came back from online learning due to the impacts of COVID-19. Online learning was very difficult for many students, however, they stayed engaged and came back to boarding with such a positive attitude. Although this year was challenging, the Gorna Liyarn girls have demonstrated resilience and commitment to their studies and co-curricular activities. W H O I N S P I R E S YO U ? The Gorna Liyarn students are an inspiration to me due to their strength and courage they show to leave their communities to broaden their education experience. I admire how the girls walk in ‘two worlds’ as they transition to PLC and back home again for holidays.
