Two PLC students have received perfect scores of 100 per cent scaled marks in Mathematics Specialist – Antonia Jian and Jennifer Sun! Antonia finished a whirlwind year with an ATAR score of 99.90 – the highest score at PLC, followed by Jennifer Sun who was only pipped by the smallest of margins, just .05 with an outstanding score of 99.85. Antonia Jian was also awarded the WACE Dux of the School Award earlier this month while Jennifer Sun was awarded the WACE Runner-Up to Dux Award. When they were asked for their study tips, they both responded with the same answer: do as many practice papers and exams as possible. They both credited their Mathematics teachers Mr and Mrs Williams – a husband and wife teaching duo who go above and beyond to ensure their students’ success. “Mr and Mrs Williams helped us immensely throughout the whole of Year 12. They provided countless practice
Ella’s advice Seize your moments. That was the parting message to the PLC community from 2020 Head Prefect, Ella Miels. Delivering her final address at Speech Night 2020, Ella challenged students, staff and guests to not only try to achieve great things, but also try to accomplish small things with great meaning and which could have a positive impact on others. “There are some moments in life that lightly pass us by without even being noticed, while other moments are heavy with significance and change people’s lives,” she said. “In one moment, Rosa Parks, an American activist who helped initiate the civil rights movement in the US, decided that she wouldn’t be seated at the back of the bus, sparking one of the most influential political movements in history. “In one moment, President Truman made the decision to drop an atomic bomb, changing warfare, geopolitical relations and millions of people’s lives forever. “In one moment, you can post an insignificant picture that might go viral and change the world. In one moment, you can say something which might stay in someone’s mind forever.” Ella said moments were everywhere and anywhere. Hidden in each moment was the opportunity to make a choice. “Use your moments to make choices that are infused with passion and action so that you can have a positive impact on the people around you. Your moments don’t have to make the front page in order to be meaningful and they don’t have to be attached to a reward or payment waiting for you afterwards for them to be worthwhile. They can just change one small part of someone’s day.”
papers and answered all our questions accurately in an easy to comprehend way,” reflects Jennifer. Mathematics Specialist contains topics in functions and calculus that build on and deepen the ideas presented in Mathematics Methods but is not for the faint-hearted. “I like physics and mathematics and so I found it enjoyable and it has catapulted me into pursuing higher education in Engineering at UNSW,” Antonia stated. This reaction to mathematics is quite the opposite for Jennifer who, in fact, prefers the Arts and has chosen to follow this love of art in a double degree at UCL in Art and Science. We wish both Antonia and Jennifer all the best in their future endeavours and know, undoubtedly, that they will flourish in their chosen fields and will continue to be Inspiring Women.
