11th Annual Village Victory Cup Live Streamed For the first time in its history, the Village Victory Cup (VVC) was live streamed to an international audience. The competition was expected to be fierce; and the teams did not disappoint in that regard. For the second year in a row, The Village of Westland was victorious while capturing the Village Victory Cup. They had reluctantly brought the cup to the event stating that they would simply be taking it back to their village at the end of the day for another year of display! Although several of the villages gave them a run for their money,
they proved themselves right. Our Saviour’s Manor team displayed great spirit and was rewarded with capturing the Spirit Award. Their entrance was a sight to behold with a “Homecoming Queen,” music, dancing, and very spirited cheering. The Lip Sync video contest was christened this year with The Village of St. Martha’s taking first place. The creativity of all videos was remarkable; and, the judges had a very difficult time with their decision. Continued on page 2

Health Care Reinvented – Thank You! The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Green Houses®
Because of many generous donors like you, frail older adults of Detroit will be able to live at the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Green Houses®. Located at The Thome Rivertown Neighborhood campus, over 60% of the structure is constructed. Much of the original building, such as the brick walls and interior support, has been adapted and reused. The first floor features high ceilings to accommodate a spacious community café and program area. Thank you donors! The Green House model offers care for 10-12 residents in a warm, personal and home-like setting. This model offers personalized care, private rooms and a central hearth, where the kitchen and dining room are located for family style meals. The first residents will be Detroiters currently in the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) at Thome Rivertown. Some of these PACE participants need health care 24/7 and want to continue working with the same medical professionals who have helped them over the past two years. With the completion of the Weinberg Green Houses®, the PACE medical staff will be able to continue supporting Green House residents, ensuring they have continuity in their health care and the health professionals they trust, while still living in their community. Thank you donors – without philanthropy this project would not have happened.

Under his dedicated and compassionate leadership, The Village of East Harbor has been a flagship senior living community as part of Presbyterian Villages of Michigan. Even during the recession, The Village of East Harbor remained profitable and successful. He is passionate about the seniors he serves. According to David, “The residents are my boss, this is their home, and I am here because of them.” He has created a culture centered on caring while still managing to maintain a very successful facility. He promotes a well-balanced life with both the residents and the employees. He knows everyone by name and joins in whether it is helping a family navigate the long-term care process or celebrating a resident or staff member. He takes time to talk to everyone and listen to what they have to say. You rarely see David down, rather quite the opposite. His positive attitude, laughter, and sense of humor are contagious. Dave is genuinely concerned about his team. His enthusiasm, quick wit, dedication, and open door policy instills confidence in his team that he is there for them and always has their back. David is an inspiring leader. He has the ability to bring out the best in everyone who works for and with him. He empowers his team to meet goals, seek

solutions, and achieve great results. He allows them freedom to do what needs to be done to provide the best senior living services for the residents. He always gives credit to his team and does not take credit himself. When challenged, he leads his team enthusiastically and with optimism. David can resolve conflicts in the work place with diplomacy leaving all involved walking away with dignity, and inspiration to be and do better. A great leader displays confidence, empathy, passion and honesty. Those who know David, would not hesitate to use these qualities to describe him. He epitomizes the notion of Service Excellence in all he does. He is a compassionate and intelligent leader. He is a man of action who leads by example and makes no excuses. We are honored to celebrate David’s 30th anniversary with Presbyterian Villages of Michigan. Also, PVM made a full sweep with honorable mentions: Ellen Byrne, executive director of The Village of Westland, received honorable mention for the Mentor Award. It’s official! PVM recently launched a new business line along with three other respected partnering organizations: Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, Southwest Solutions and Jewish Family Service. Metro In-Home Solutions will assist seniors and others in need of accessibility to retrofit their homes and remain independent. This venture was begun in answer to the great need for this service noted by all four partners over many years of community involvement. The Bipartisan Public Policy Center (see article on on page 5) found that 88% of seniors want to remain in their own home; and 89% want to remain in their community. Metro In-Home Solutions will assist seniors to be able to fulfill that wish.
Interested parties can have their home assessed for safety and accessibility issues and then make the adjustments necessary to remain in their home as long as possible while doing so in a safe and responsible manner. Home repair is also on the horizon. It is important to note that prevention is key. Many people wait until a major incident such as a fall or hospitalization and then are not able to return home. If one prepares ahead and is ready for anything they have a much better chance of staying independent. For further information and to find out how to access these services, call Gary Gray at (313) 929-9980.

Bipartisan Public Policy Center PVM was honored to recently attend an invitation only a policy briefing with the Bipartisan Public Policy Center in Washington D.C. The purpose of this briefing was to announce the findings of a year-long task force and release its report on housing and services for seniors. It was a very welcome message and good news for seniors. This Senior Health and Housing Task Force is comprised of four well-respected leaders from both sides of the aisle, all of whom have noted careers. They include Henry Cisneros, Former Secretary for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD); Mel Martinez, Former Secretary for HUD and a Former U.S. Senator; Allyson Y. Schwartz, Former U.S. Representative; and Vin Weber, Former U.S. Representative. They spoke with passion and stated boldly that America can and must do far more than it is presently doing to support its senior population. The task force report, titled “Healthy Aging Begins At Home” states some very alarming statistics as to the state of affairs regarding the future of aging in America. (Please see infographic at right). However, the good news is that this task force and the combined efforts of many across the aging services network, can create a collective voice to totally transform the way our society treats the senior population.
America’s population is aging. By integrating health care and other services with housing, the U.S. has the potential to improve health outcomes for older adults, reduce costs borne by the health care system, and enable millions to “age with options” in their homes and communities.

HEALTHY AGING BEGINS AT HOME
Among the recommendations given in the report are: integrate health care and supportive services with housing; make homes and communities age-friendly; and build affordable, suitable housing for seniors. Presbyterian Villages of Michigan has long been known as an innovator for quality living and services. These recommendations affirm that we are on the right track. Many of the bold moves we have made in recent years to add home and community based services to our portfolio have positioned us to be leaders in transforming the way we age in America. Stay tuned for further developments both at a national level and with regard to what PVM is doing to add to the collective voice of change.

Older Adults Thrive!
Society Donors and Board Members Honored for Making That Happen. The 22nd annual Calvin, Sterling & Peterson Mission Makers Societies and Board Recognition Luncheon was held on June 6th at the Masonic Temple in Detroit. Guests enjoyed a private, guided tour followed by recognition presentation to donors. The magnificent architecture and sense of history were the perfect setting to honor those who have ensured the legacy of PVM. Thomas Kimble, PVM Foundation Board Member and immediate past president of AARP Michigan, delivered the inspiring welcome and closing remarks. Tom Wyllie, PVM Director of Wellness, shared how much the Village Victory Cup means to PVM residents. And the audience was treated to an encore of Village of Westland resident Motoko Huthwaite’s testimonial from the Inspire Possibilities Breakfast. PVM Foundation donors enjoy a luncheon at the historical Masonic Temple of Detroit.
In addition to thanking members of all three giving societies for their loyal support, PVM recognized the outstanding servant leadership of several board members. Learn more about the giving societies and how you can become a member at PVMF.org, or contact the PVM Foundation at 248.281.2040 or pvmfoundation@pvm.org.
Women in Blue Recognition
PVM was pleased to be part of the Women in Blue recognition hosted by The Detroit Public Safety Foundation on Monday, June 6, 2016 at the Detroit Athletic Club. Women in Blue was an opportunity to thank the Detroit Police Department (DPD) for the work they do on behalf of women and children. The event also provided a platform to honor the contributions of women within the DPD. For the first time, a Women in Blue Officer of the Year Award was presented to a female officer who has shown professionalism, respect, integrity, dedication and excellence. Sgt. Chimene Irvin, who has worked with DPD for 30 years, received the honor.
ABOVE: The Officer of the Year was Sgt. Chimene Irvin, a 30 year veteran of the department; BELOW: Senator Debbie Stabenow appeared as a special guest speaker.
Mrs. Martha Firestone Ford was recognized with the “Zero Tolerance Award” for her stance on Domestic Violence in the NFL. As the owner of the Detroit Lions, she has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to domestic violence and dangerous weapons. She was honored for her commitment to stopping domestic violence and changing the culture in the NFL. United States Senator Debbie Stabenow spoke as a special guest, remarking about her grandfather, Lee Greer, who was a police officer and her admiration for first responders. She also spoke about her commitment and advocacy for the safety and well-being of women and children. We were also honored to have Mary Kramer, publisher with Crain’s Detroit Business, serve as our hostess. “Once again, Women in Blue was a huge success. We are thankful for our sponsors and community partners who also believe in the importance of recognizing our Women in Blue. This event is important to us because we believe these women are worthy of this celebration. We are proud to present it each year,” said Catherine Govan, executive director of the Detroit Public Safety Foundation. McFarlan and Presbyterian Villages of Michigan to Work Together for Flint Seniors
Hillside/Friendship Center Renewal Project Nearing Completion
PVM and McFarlan Charitable Corporation (McFarlan), based in Flint, Michigan, have entered into a management agreement to assist with strategy and operations of McFarlan properties. With shared values and a mission to create new possibilities for senior living, our two organizations are well positioned to add to the vibrancy of the surrounding community which is adjacent to downtown Flint near the cultural center. McFarlan has been a well-respected member of the Flint area for many years.
Thanks to the generosity of donors, and after two years of fundraising and construction, the new and improved Village of Hillside is nearing completion! The new building replaces the three oldest buildings, built in 1975, with 32 apartments accessible to those with mobility issues. Additionally, the Friendship Center of Harbor Springs will have a permanent, larger space to accommodate more programs and serve more local seniors.
Save the date for the open house and dedication ceremony on Wednesday, August 24th in Harbor Springs!
Hartford Village Almost Move-in Ready! We are pleased to report that Hartford Village is almost move-in ready! After an outstanding groundbreaking event in August 2015 with over 600 attendees and numerous events for upcoming residents, a great deal of action has been taking place to make sure everything is ready to welcome them. We will keep you posted as soon as the date is set. Hartford Village is a joint venture between Hartford Memorial Baptist Church and Presbyterian Villages of Michigan. In 1926, The McFarlan Home was established to provide housing for single, older women in an area adjacent to downtown Flint and near the Cultural Center. In 1976, The McFarlan Home moved from its original home, which is now a museum facility known as the Whaley Historical House, to next door on Kearsley Street. The McFarlan Home is a 29-unit assisted living facility for women (State licensed home for the aged). In 2011, The McFarlan Home acquired two nearby apartment buildings known as Court Street Village (CSV) East (150 units) and Court Street Village (CSV) West (106 units). These buildings are occupied by moderate to low income seniors, who are able to live independently. In 2013, The McFarlan Home transferred all properties and investments to various subsidiary organizations. The McFarlan Home was renamed the McFarlan Charitable Corporation (McFarlan), a Michigan nonprofit corporation, to better reflect the work it does. All the residential facilities are supported by McFarlan, which provides amenities and services to the residents. Robert Bessert, president and chair of the McFarlan Board of Directors, stated: “The Board of McFarlan Charitable Corporation is thrilled to enter into this Management Agreement with PVM. Because of our similar missions, PVM will be able to begin managing McFarlan with little disruption. We look forward to our future relationship.” Roger Myers, PVM president and CEO, commenting on the LOI said, “PVM is looking forward to working closely with the McFarlan Charitable Corporation and to strengthening its impressive 90 year legacy of providing quality services to Flint area seniors. We are excited about the prospects of sharing PVM’s professional experiences and leadership resources, along with becoming engaged with a broad set of community stakeholders.” Welcome McFarlan! We look forward to an outstanding working relationship in keeping with our long-standing histories and commitment to Service Excellence.
