YOU CREATED A NEW HOME FOR SENIORS! Hillside residents grateful to donors and getting ready to move back home

Thanks to you, the first gathering in the new space at The Village of Hillside was held in August, almost a year after 24+ residents were relocated for the building of their new home. The celebration marked the wrap up of the fundraising campaign, led by committee co-chairs Fred Walstrom and Linda Rhodes-Pauly. You contributed over $1.6 million to give these seniors a brand new, accessible home, and a larger community senior center—thank you! Construction is now expected to be completed in October, and residents are looking forward to moving in!

THREE PROBLEMS YOU SOLVED AT THE HILLSIDE CAMPUS: THE PROBLEM

YOUR SOLUTION

No Elevators! Residents had to struggle with the stairs

Two elevators have been added to the new building—thanks to you!

Residents had difficulty maneuvering around their kitchens and bathrooms

The new homes are accessible and barrier-free—thanks to you!

Community seniors at the Friendship Center had to compete for space

The Friendship Center is nearly triple its former size with rooms for meal prep, private exams, a computer lab and more—thanks to you!

“The love and appreciation I receive from residents makes every day worth all I can give.” – Colleen Froats

matters

WHAT IS THE SPIRIT OF GIVING? For Colleen Froats it’s custom aprons, appreciation and giving what you can.

“I’ve always believed the more you give, the more you have. The residents make every day worth all I can give,” Collen Froats wrote in her Melinda Conway Callahan Spirit of Giving Award-winning entry. Colleen, a resident assistant at Perry Farm Village answered, “Why do you give to PVM?” for the Spirit of Giving contest, open to all employees who donate to the PVM Foundation. The winner gets $500 donated to their Village in their name. Colleen gives in many ways, from financial gifts to sewing aprons for residents. “The ladies had to wear a bib at meals,” said Colleen. “I thought, ‘they need something more.’ Now they each have an apron and they love them,” she said fondly. You can read more about Colleen and see her story at PVMF.org.

“I consider it an honor to care for and give to the residents of Perry Farm.” Colleen Froats accepts a $500 check for Perry Farm Village from Bobie Clement at the PVM Foundation.

YOUR GIFT MATTERS!

A WEDDING IN THE CHAPEL YOU BUILT You make amazing things possible!

Love sprang from the Chapel you built as work continued on the Health & Wellness Center fundraising campaign at East Harbor. Wedding bells rang for Eugene Kleemann and wife, Maria, six years (almost to the day) after the dedication of the chapel named for Gene’s parents. The Karl & Frieda Kleemann Chapel opened in July 2010, a place dedicated to spiritual well-being. You gave an amazing $1.8 million to lay those bricks!

The The Karl & Frieda Kleemann Chapel, a place dedicated to spiritual well-being for residents.

Now, The Village of East Harbor is working to finish fundraising for a new facility for the physical well-being of residents. You’re helping. You’re creating enough space for physical therapy and exercise equipment with each gift to the campaign. With each gift, you provide East Harbor residents and community seniors with the services they need. Who knows

We Asked! QA &

It’s Almost Halloween: What Scares PVMF Board Member, Donna Snider?! PVMF:

YOU ARE A GOLD-MEDAL DONOR!

WITHOUT YOU, THERE IS NO VILLAGE VICTORY CUP! So what?! Isn’t it just a game anyway? PVM residents don’t think so! They train for the event ALL YEAR – and ANYONE can participate. That’s why you deserve the gold! You make this unique tradition possible. Josie Bolt! Resident, Josie Patrick from The Village of Oakman Manor strikes Usain Bolt’s ever-famous pose!

Donna, what scares you?

DONNA: The thought of a senior living on

their own, struggling to find care and services they need. Also, thunderstorms and clowns! PVMF:

That scares us too—not the clowns—but seniors without the help they need.

DONNA: Exactly! Aging brings uncertainty, but

the good thing is PVM donors help seniors enter their later years with confidence. PVMF:

What inspires you to support PVMF as a donor and board member?

DONNA: Two main reasons: 1) the need for

services is growing and there are too few affordable solutions for seniors; 2) PVM delivers results. PVMF:

Silver with winning spirit! The Village of Woodbridge resident, Azele Jones had a great time at the Village Victory Cup.

Just one more question; what will you be for Halloween?

DONNA: We haven’t picked our family theme

yet—so stay tuned! As for favorites, I have distinctive red curly hair so it’s fun covering it up. No one knows who is under the wig! Donna Snider is a member of the PVM Foundation Board of Directors. She lives in Birmingham with her husband and two beautiful children.

S AV E T H E DAT E !

BREAKING NEWS: AMERICANS DON’T CARE False: YOU Care to the tune of $373 Billion! $373 billion is a lot of money. 3% of that is a lot of money. But still, thousands of seniors can’t access safe, quality housing or the life-saving services they need. Thousands of seniors are struggling in what should be their golden years. Imagine: YOUR MOM, DAD, even YOU – working hard for a lifetime only to have peace of mind and financial security ripped away. A health crisis. A volatile economy. An emergency— suddenly everything is gone. Last year, individuals gave over $373 billion to charities in the USA and just around 3% of those gifts went to seniors. Imagine if that percent increased. Think of what that could do for seniors. Without you, 4,500 seniors wouldn’t have what they need to thrive—they’d have to face their worst fears. You’re helping seniors. Your giving truly matters. AND, until no senior needs help, we need you!
