The All That Jazz! gala kicked off with a signature cocktail, “The PVM Pizzazz,” as the Oakland University Jazz Band provided the entertainment.

PVM’S VISION REALIZED BY RESIDENTS AND STAFF We have chosen to devote this edition to social responsibility. PVM’s Vision is “to positively transform senior living and services and enhance the communities we serve.” Since there are so many great stories to share throughout the year, we wanted to highlight some of them along with how corporate leaders are assisting us to make this Vision a reality. PVM’s Leadership Let’s begin with what PVM is doing through community engagement and service. Many PVM leaders serve on boards and advisory committees at the local, state and national levels. Setting the tone for this servant leadership is PVM CEO Roger Myers. For years he has served in leadership roles for the national LeadingAge organization and LeadingAge Michigan. This organization is focused on education, advocacy and applied research in Aging, including housing and services to seniors. Myers currently serves as co-chair of the Future of Affordable Senior Housing Cabinet for the national LeadingAge. The cabinet examines issues hindering the expansion of affordable senior housing, and will look for additional ways to fund affordable senior housing in the future. At LeadingAge Michigan, Myers is the chair of the Political Action Committee, with PVM Brush Park administrator, Jannie Scott, serving as an at-large member of the committee.

The Village of Our Saviour’s Manor’s Great Giving Spirit The Village of Our Saviour’s Manor (OSM) won the coveted Spirit Award at the Village Victory Cup for the third straight year this past spring. However, their spirit shines throughout the entire year by giving back to their community in so many ways. This spirit translated into synergy at the highest levels. WATER FOR FLINT – For starters, OSM Volunteer of the Year Wandie Cross and others talked with their pastor Rev. Vincent Matthews at their local church, People’s Community Baptist Church, about the Village’s plan to deliver water to Flint residents. The two organizations teamed up and delivered thousands of water bottles. COMPASSIONATE HEARTS – Every year the residents of OSM show community responsibility in many other ways. The Compassionate Hearts Group has visited hospital patients on a weekly basis. THE CARING HANDS GROUP – They host a long- standing group that crochets blankets for the homeless from donated plastic bags. They team up with Wayne Metro Community Services who distributes the blankets to those who can most use them. Also on an annual basis, OSM has donated hand sewn animal blankets and pillows for children over the holidays, as well as donated toys and other goods for gift baskets. COMMUNITY GIFT BASKETS – In partnership with the Good Fellows organization, OSM is assembling gift baskets for the Westland Police and Fire Departments as a thank you for the great service they provide to the community.
COMMUNITY WELLNESS PROGRAMS – Community residents have been invited to be a part of wellness sessions throughout the year in conjunction with partners such as The Senior Alliance (Area Agency on Aging Region 1-C) and Beaumont Health. Community spirit is alive and well at The Village of Our Saviour’s Manor!
The Village of East Harbor’s Engaged in Their Community! Over in Chesterfield Township, The Village of East Harbor (VEH) exemplified community engagement: In partnership with Maconce Elementary School in the Anchor Bay School District, 8 – 10 VEH residents met with 1st graders in the library every Wednesday. The students read to the volunteers. It has been a great time for all. While practicing their reading, the students showed off their electronic iPads. The residents enjoyed having a glimpse into the latest technology. Life and laughter have been abundant. The program is called “Listen & Love” since the children are being listened to but also being provided with love, encouragement and time. Another example of community engagement involved the “Give Love Project” for Macomb Foster Children. Over 200 bags and buckets were packed full of items that would enhance the lives of both elementary and junior high children. Both of these projects spoke to the magic which is part of intergenerational programs.
PVM Recognized as Best-Managed NonProfit Crain’s Detroit Business has selected Presbyterian Villages of Michigan as The Best-Managed NonProfit for 2016. PVM received the honor “For tackling the complexity of meshing an affordable senior community with increased access to health care and related services for seniors in the surrounding neighborhood and collaborating at high levels to do it...” The Edward N. and Della L. Thome Rivertown Neighborhood, near Detroit’s east riverfront, was the driving force behind this award due to innovation and challenges which were met along the way by PVM and its partners. Chelsea-based United Methodist Retirement Communities has collaborated as co-general partner of the community and managing
partner of the assisted living at Thome Rivertown Neighborhood. Henry Ford Health System is a partner in PACE Southeast Michigan, the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, which has a location on the campus. PACE is a nationally recognized way of delivering services which allows seniors to remain as independent as possible while accessing quality health care. PACE Southeast Michigan is the largest program of its kind in Michigan. Over the past eight years, the first two phases of the campus have become a $45 million project demanding 20 different sources of funding to meet capital costs. And more is on the way with the opening of two Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Green Houses® and a community center and cafe. Thome Rivertown Neighborhood shows promise as a national

How an Individual Donor and The American Legion Post #18 Helped The Village of Hampton Meadows The members of American Legion Post #18 served their country and continue to serve their community. When they heard that the residents of The Village of Hampton Meadows, near Bay City, wanted a pool table for recreation and camaraderie, they donated their table. The post commander was involved every step of the way; and the American Legion members helped to deliver the table as well as to repair and install it. The residents and their families are
finding the pool table a great way to interact and enjoy each other’s company. Sometimes it only takes one individual to create a sense of community and a spirit of giving. A relative of one Hampton Meadows resident donated a beautiful solar powered lighthouse for the main drive of the campus. Although he makes them for-profit, when he found out the purpose his sister-in-law had in mind, he eagerly donated his time and materials as a caring act. His generosity provided light to the campus in more ways than one!
Thank You, Lear Corporation, for the New Gathering Space! Thanks to generous donors, including the Lear Corporation, YOU have given residents at The Village of St. Martha’s a special retreat! Residents are grateful for a new outdoor space where they can continue to enjoy time well-spent with family and friends. Residents and supporters celebrated the new area in October with a barbecue and ribbon cutting. Lear’s gift capped two years of fundraising and hard work. Volunteers from Lear, Oak Pointe Church and the Cody Rouge Community Action Alliance came together to build the shelter and picnic benches in one day. You were vital to creating this space—and we can’t thank you enough!

The Age Strong goal is to lend a total of $70 million to organizations which provide needed services for people over 50. The investments made into the Age Strong fund will fund loans to assist providers with housing and basic nutritional needs for their constituents. With smart, adaptive aging solutions, we as an aging services network will be able to create more of what people need to age strong. The Weinberg Green Houses® and the Thome Rivertown Neighborhood will be highlighted on the Age Strong website as an example of the innovative solutions which can be accomplished. The Age Strong partners spent much of a day recently filming the entire campus and interviewing key players and participants to showcase the great work being done and the vibrancy of the neighborhood. Hillside Seniors are Home, Thanks to You! More than a year after construction started, residents at The Village of Hillside in Harbor Springs are happy to be back in their new home! “I absolutely love it!” said Judy Byrwa of her new two-bedroom apartment. “That first night, I was so excited and grateful to be back in my own home after nearly 14 months. Thank you to all the donors who made our new home possible!” You donated over $1.6 million and gave seniors like Judy a brand new, accessible home and a larger community center. Because of you, residents can stay independent in their homes longer. Two elevators were added, so residents no longer have to struggle up the stairs with groceries. Because of you, residents don’t have to worry about where they will live as they grow older and more frail. The apartments are accessible and barrier-free, making it easier for residents to maneuver around their kitchens and bathrooms.

Helping the City of Westland Become a Community for a Lifetime! Together Community Connections and the City of Westland have been actively working to help the city become an increasingly better community for people of all ages. For the past year and a half we’ve been working to complete the Michigan Aging and Adult Services Agency (AASA) Community for a Lifetime Assessment. The AASA created the
assessment as a way to recognize communities across Michigan for their efforts to make their community a great place for people of all ages to live, work, and play. To obtain designation as a Community for a Lifetime, communities must gather information on key community livability factors, evaluate what they have found, and make plans for what can be improved to make the community friendly for people of all ages. In addition to involving city employees and other community stakeholders in completing the assessment, the participation of Westland citizens of all ages has been and remains a vital part of the evaluation process. There are two ways for citizens to get involved. First, they can take a
short online survey that takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Second, they can gather some friends together, form a team, and select an area of the city to assess. Together with their teammates they then explore the selected area, and using tools we provide, make and record their observations. We call this putting your “feet in the street”, which we think is a great project for a variety of community groups including civic organizations, student groups, church groups, 4-H clubs, scout troops, business associations, and more! LGBT Inclusivity Toolkit Recognizing that lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults deserve to feel welcome in the communities they love and call home just as much as their heterosexual peers, in 2015 Community Connections applied for and obtained a generous grant from the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan to develop a toolkit to help organizations like itself become more inclusive of LGBT older adults. Community Connections, a joint venture of the Luella Hannan Memorial Foundation and Presbyterian Villages of Michigan, is part of a national movement called the Village Movement. In communities across the U.S., older adults are banding together and forming member-driven, volunteer-supported organizations referred to as Villages to help each other obtain the supports and services they need to remain living and actively engaged with their community. Through the help of Fifth Third Bank and a national assistance program, low interest loans have been provided to a number of seniors who desperately want to stay in their homes but are in danger of losing their independence due to needed home repairs and modifications. Among the repairs accomplished are the installation of levered door handles and internal handrails, walk-in showers and chairlifts. In addition, new gutters and downspouts, walk-in tubs and new windows have been provided. These types of installations allow seniors to remain in their homes safely and securely. Not only does this program benefit the senior homeowners. It also benefits the community in that it prevents nursing home admissions and maintains home values.
