Outlook
Innovation in Mobility PVM is positioning itself for the future along with helping communities and society to do the same. An exciting opportunity occurred for The Village of Brush Park Paradise Valley residents recently. And its scope goes far beyond PVM. The residents had a chance to try out a Detroit first, an autonomous, accessible, paratransit shuttle. This demonstration was a part of an overall pilot service deploying paratransit shuttles to transport seniors and the underserved to and from appointments and other needs at a local hospital. The deployment – a partnership between Navya, NextEnergy, Bestmile, Flagstar Bank, IXR Mobility, and AARP, as well as DTE, and Michigan’s Office of Future Mobility and electrification PlanetM – aims to enhance accessibility for residents of two communities – Brush Park Manor and Brewster Homes, through the use of a self-driving shuttle featuring and ADA compliant wheelchair ramp manufactured by BraunAbility. With these integrations, the service expects to solve the problem many residents of each community face attempting to secure reliable transportation to and from doctor’s appointments and other essential, critical or emergency needs.

“Brush Park Manor applauds the opportunity to participate in such an innovative service for our seniors. With transportation being one of the most difficult challenges for seniors, this service will ensure they have the expediency, efficiency and safety to access reliable transportation,” said E. Kern Tomlin, the Chairman of Brush Park Manor Board of Directors. Starting mid-July 2020, a Navya Autonomous Shuttle commenced operating along a pre-programmed 1.31 mile route, with an Continued on page 3
Walkable Communities are on the Way Another important aspect of mobility is access to amenities and walkable communities. Recently the Bay County Road Commission activated a HAWK, (High Intensity Activated Cross Walk) beacon right near the Village of Hampton Meadows. This is the first installation of its kind in Bay County. The HAWK is used stop vehicular traffic and allow pedestrians to walk safely across a roadway at a location other than a road intersection. When activated by a pedestrian, the HAWK signal will stop traffic at the mid-block pedestrian crossing allowing the walker(s) to cross safely. Unlike an ordinary three-light traffic signal, the HAWK signal remains dark until activated by a pedestrian. The pedestrian presses the

button located on a pedestal next to the sidewalk, one on both sides of the road. This activated the HAWK beacon. Next the sequence begins with a single, flashing yellow light, indicating the pedestrian has pushed the button. This is followed by a steady yellow light, meaning the driver should slow down and be prepared to stop. The yellow light then deactivates and two steady red lights are displayed. Once the red lights come on, vehicles are required to stop until the pedestrian crosses the road. The HAWK will then change to flashing both red signals (similar to a railroad crossing signal) allowing traffic to proceed as long as there are no pedestrians in the crosswalk. The signal then goes dark again until needed. There are also Walk and Wait signals to guide the pedestrians. This welcome addition to traffic safety near the Village of Hampton Meadows will go a long way in accessing nearby amenities and shopping, including Meijer, as well as give a new sense of independence and safer access for residents and other nearby seniors. Many thanks to Hampton Meadows staff, board members and residents who advocated and helped to make this happen.

Sunrise PACE Coming to Fort Gratiot and Surrounding Communities PVM leadership was pleased to participate in a ground breaking ceremony for the new PACE location coming to Fort Gratiot. The center will be on the campus of Lake Huron Woods and play a significant role in offering choice of services to the local communities. It will serve Huron, Sanilac, Tuscola, and St. Clair counties. This goal of Region VII Area Agency to provide a complete campus will be an exceptional match for PVM’s The Village of Lake Huron Woods for housing and for Lakeshore Presbyterian Church participants. Together we will provide a total continuum of care. “It was a perfect location to fill that need,” according to Stacey Dudewicz, of the Region VII Area Agency on Aging. Harbor Cottage at The Village of Perry Farm Shows Promise for the Future
After several years of planning and market studies, The Village of Perry Farm in Harbor Springs held the ground breaking on August 27th. While social distancing and proper protocols were observed, it was a celebration which gave appropriate honor to this noteworthy endeavor. We have long known that a major need exists for memory care and assisted living in Harbor Springs and the surrounding area. This matches national trends for the growth in this arena. Linda Rhodes-Pauly, Chair of the Perry Farm Board Speakers at the ceremony included Roger Myers, President & CEO of PVM; Linda Rhodes Paully, Chair of the Perry Farm Board; Bonnie Kulp, Executive Director, Harbor Springs Chamber of Commerce; Tom Adams, owner of Birchwood Construction; and Mary Catherine Hannah, Executive Director of The Village of Perry Farm. When complete Harbor Cottage will provide 20 beds for memory care and fill a large gap in the geographic area in terms of services

offered. Construction will be delayed for the immediate future due to circumstances beyond our control but will definitely be accomplished in the not too distant future. Harbor Cottage will join with the Village of Perry Farm and The Village of Hillside in providing a variety of options to allow seniors to remain in their communities with a Service Excellence style of support and care.

PVM Community Centers of the Future Happening Now One of the lessons learned from COVID-19 is the need for updating locations which serve seniors to help reduce exposures to viruses. Once again PVM is living up to its reputation as an innovator. This grant was funded through the Oakland County “Oakland Together Community Response and Recovery Fund” which helps local senior communities prepare for the future. Thanks to their generosity significant funding is being provided to upgrade safety enhancements for PVM’s two Oakland County Villages – The Village of Holly Woodlands and The Village of Oakland Woods. As a result, we will be able to offer a touch-free devices which include the installation of touchless, automatic doors, soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers, flushing toilets and urinals, soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers, hand sanitizer dispensers, light switches, and water bottle refill dispensers rather than water fountains. Ultraviolet lights, which are proven to be very effective, can assist staff to sanitize the exercise room quickly and safely. These actions will help support a clean environment. The touchless devices will provide older adults reassurance to participate and leave their homes. Activity and social interaction are keys to wellness;

Activity and social interaction have been proven to be the pinnacle in overall health of everyone – and older adults in particular. Clean and reliable community spaces are some of the best medicine! Thank you Oakland County for helping PVM maintain its commitment to Wellness and providing an environment which promotes social interaction and activity while providing options to reduce exposure to viruses spread by touch. This project can jump start the future of senior environments, not only for PVM, but across the nation.

We owe many thanks to the late Harold Massingille, former service coordinator at The Village of Brush Park, whose dedication made this happen for PVM residents. Also many thanks to Jannie Scott, Administrator, for continuing his legacy and this important service which has played a significant role in innovation and serving the needs of seniors.
