The 17th Annual Humana/PVM Village Victory Cup Returns Live!
23 Villages participated live or virtually with a lively competition featuring brain smart activities, walking events, basketball, and the ever-popular, balloon volleyball. The competition was fierce with The Village of Westland capturing the Village Victory Cup and Hartford Village taking the Spirit Award. This event showcased the vibrancy of seniors with participants’ ages ranging from 64 and under to 90 and over. Not only are the VVC games engaging, but they are also designed and scored so that every resident, regardless of their ability, can contribute points to their team. This model of wellness benefits the community by promoting healthy habits among vulnerable seniors to enhance their quality of life. The Village Victory Cup uses “stealth wellness” to encourage seniors of all ability levels to participate in a healthy lifestyle through fun and interactive games residents play yearround. This year-round practice encourages a positive lifestyle change and promotes physical activity and social interaction.
Spirit Award winners from Hartford Village
Residents feel passionate about practicing and are motivated to work harder, bettering their scores for the whole team. Many thanks to our presenting sponsor, Humana, for their continued support! Special thank you to our volunteers from Flex Tech Schools, Wayne State University, The University of Michigan Flint, Oakland University, and Versalev Systems Engineering. The Village Victory Cup would not be possible without the unwavering support of our sponsors and volunteers. Thank you for your continued dedication to wellness and older adults! Thank You to PVM Stakeholders On September 30th, PVM held a Luncheon to Say Thanks at the Edsel Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores. Surrounded by the beautiful venue and grounds, this was our moment to thank selected donors, board members, volunteers, and staff who were nominated by their peers. Thanks to all of these generous individuals, PVM has been successful over the past 77 years in providing the opportunity to “embrace the possibilities” for Michigan seniors.
Roger Myers, President & CEO, presenting The Shining Star Award for service excellence to Bernice Lewis.
All of the attendees enjoyed the camaraderie of finally being able to celebrate life in person. Bernice Lewis, administrative office assistant
at the Home Office, was recognized with The Shining Star Award for employees having received multiple nominations.

HONORING THOSE WHO SERVE
Honoring Our Rosie The Riveters On Labor Day the Village of East Harbor, along with the Rosie the Riveter Association, hosted a Ringing of the Bells to remember the Rosies who answered a patriotic call and labor to help America become victorious during World War II. The bell ringing was part of a nationwide initiative, where Rosies all around the country rang a bell at 1 PM to show support in remembrance of all these magnificent ladies. Several Rosies reside at PVM. Two very special Rosies named Fran reside at The Village of East Harbor at the age of 100 and the Village of Oakland Woods at 98. Perhaps it is their very feistiness as Rosies that has made their legendary longevity possible!

Presbyterian Villages of Michigan Honors Veterans Brian Dimuzio, Jr., Tech Specialist with our Department of Technology, not only serves PVM extremely well but also has served our country over many years in many ways. We owe him a debt of gratitude for keeping us safe at home and around the world. Brian was on mission for the last two presidential inaugurations and has served three tours overseas — well beyond what is expected of military personnel. While contributing 14+ years of active service in the Army, Brian fired 155 rounds observed safe in and out of the country. PVM has received several awards from the military for supporting Brian’s service to our country. Many thanks to Brian!

The Village of Westland’s “Stan the Man” “Stan The Man” is legendary among staff and fellow residents at The Village of Westland. His technical capabilities were utilized in the military with administrative work in support of our troops. After his service, he devoted 31 years into his career as a technical writer. A former resident of Livonia for many years, he and his wife were married for 66 years until she passed away. Maintaining his home and grounds gave Stan great joy. He has carried over that passion with his residence at the Village of Westland. Creating a positive environment is one of Stan’s impressive traits.

Looking out for others and giving back are also in Stan’s repertoire. Several years ago, he arranged a visit from local media Village of Westland resident and veteran Stanley Wickman to showcase a fellow resident and veteran, John, at the age of 102. This resulted in a heartfelt and inspirational story that his family and all PVM stakeholders enjoyed immensely. At a Village-wide level, Stan is very engaged with making his community a great place to age. He assists with the PVM Foundation’s Legacy Society to provide funding for special projects. He also volunteers wherever needed. Just within our time interviewing Stan the Man we felt like we had known him our entire life. He is the neighbor everyone hopes to have. We can see why he has earned his reputation. Thank you for all you do to inspire others, Stan!

MICHIGAN-FIRST VETERANS PREFERENCE PROGRAM
For Our Veterans and Military Families
PVM Villages hold Veterans Day celebrations every year. Pictured here are veterans from years ago. Many thanks to all of our veterans for protecting our freedom.
Veterans Day celebrations and throughout the year are times in which we should pay tribute to all veterans for their service. Their families also deserve our gratitude for the sacrifices they have made for our country. Our veterans over the years have not known where they would be going next or if they would ever be coming home! In honor of their bravery, PVM has held many Veterans Day events. Pictured here are resident veterans from The Thome Rivertown Neighborhood at a previous event. Talking with veterans over the years inspired our No Wait Program to thank them (see the ad to the right).
