Graceful Living is a quarterly magazine produced by Presbyterian Villages of Michigan and reflects our primary mission of serving seniors and their communities.

Michigan’s natural beauty, diverse cultures, rich history, and vibrant neighborhoods make it a wonderful place to retire.

Graceful Living explores the abundance of our state through the singular lens of those 55 and older. Each season, we’ll share stories from our senior living communities, provide updates on upcoming events and festivals, ask experts to give their advice on topics important to seniors, and more.

We hope that you find Graceful Living to be a valuable resource that helps you make the most out of living in Michigan.

Easy Livin’

Fragrant Fall Foliage

This Michigan native plant gives your garden a splash of Autumn color.

Do you have some space around your garden or patio that you’d like to infuse with a little bit of color? Consider planting a native shrub such as the Fragrant Sumac (Rhus aromatica), which features verdant green leaves for most of the year before bursting into bright red foliage in the fall.

Choosing native plant species for your yard and garden is a

simple way that you can help enhance our local ecosystem. Unlike ornamental plants that are imported from other regions, native plants provide habitat and food sources for native pollinators and wildlife, as well as support natural systems such as limiting erosion or flooding.

They also mean less maintenance for you! Native plants have adapted to our unique climate and so are much more resilient. That means they can handle our wild Michigan weather fluctuations with less upkeep on your end.

Nurturing Your Garden’s Nature

Plan for Spring by tending to a few tasks this Fall.

Leave Those Leaves

During our freezing winter months, leaves are an important source of nutrients for our local flora and fauna, and can even help insulate your garden beds. Instead of raking them up and carting them away, consider mulching them!

After a few cool and dry days, knock any leaves off of perennials and set up your lawn mower to mulch (no bag!). Simply run or ride your mower over the leaves multiple times, which will chop them into smaller and smaller pieces. You can use a blower to move them to the edges of your yard or bed, and to help these tinier leaf particles filter down to the base of your plants and grass.

Care and Clean-Up

Take a look at your plants and remove any that show signs of disease; these are the only organic materials that you want to get rid of! Take deadheaded flowers and any weeds and add them to your compost pile. If possible, leave any seed tops in place, as these are an important source of food for small birds during winter.

Plant Bulbs

Plan for an impressive Spring garden by planting flower bulbs now, selecting varieties that will bloom from early Spring through next Autumn. Plus, planting alliums like garlic, onions, and shallots in containers means you can easily bring them indoors during any particularly frigid cold snaps, and enjoy delicious fresh crops in the late Spring and early Summer.

Exploring Michigan in Autumn

It’s not time to hibernate quite yet! Here are a few ways that you can enjoy the outdoors this Fall.

Public Golf

Golfing is a great way to get in your steps, work on your balance and range of motion, and catch up with old friends. With many public courses around the state, you don’t have to be part of the club to play with clubs.

Enjoy Michigan’s apple bounty with this simple and delicious treat:

Baked Apple with Oatmeal Crunch

1 baking apple (ex: Honeycrisp or Golden Delicious)

1 tbsp walnut pieces

• 2 tsp dried tart cherries or raisins

¼ tsp cinnamon

1 tsp brown sugar

• Pinch orange zest

• 2 tsp rolled oats

• ½ tsp unsalted butter

½ cup apple cider or orange juice

• Greek yogurt (optional)

1. Preheat oven to 375°F

2. Prepare the apple: peel skin off top 3; remove stem and core with a small spoon or melon baller and create a shallow 2-inch divot for the topping. Place in a small baking dish.

3. Mix walnuts, cherries/raisins, cinnamon, brown sugar, and zest; stuff the apple with half of the nuts and all of the cherries/raisins.

4. Add oatmeal and butter to the remaining nut mixture; work the butter until the mixture is crumbly and just barely holds together. Spoon this over the other mixture and pat it in to seal in the filling.

5. Pour cider or juice into baking dish; cover loosely with foil, and bake until apple is nearly tender (about 30 minutes).

6. Uncover apple and continue to bake until tender when pierced with a knife and oatmeal is

browned and crisped (about 20 more minutes). Baste the top once and baste the sides frequently with the juice from the dish.

7. You can serve it warm, room temperature, or cool. Top with Greek yogurt if you like! Enjoy.

Ask the Experts

November is Alzheimer’s Disease

Awareness Month, so we reached out to our friends at the Michigan Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association to share their insights.

Q. What is Alzheimer’s disease?

Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that affects memory, thinking and behavior and is the most common cause of dementia. Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging. The symptoms gradually worsen over time and most individuals live 4 to 8 years after a diagnosis.

Q. What is the difference between Alzheimer’s and dementia?

Alzheimer’s is a specific disease, whereas dementia is a general term for a decline in cognitive ability severe enough to interfere with daily life.

Q. What are the warning signs of Alzheimer’s?

Some warning signs include memory loss that disrupts daily life, challenges in planning or solving problems, and difficulty completing familiar tasks.

Q. How can I reduce my chances of getting Alzheimer’s or dementia?

There is growing evidence to suggest that adopting healthy lifestyle habits may help reduce the risk

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, the number of people nationwide living with Alzheimer’s will increase from 6.5 million today to nearly 13 million in 2050. Here are answers to a few of the common questions the Association receives.

of cognitive decline. Recommendations include eating a heart healthy diet, exercising regularly, and staying cognitively and socially engaged.

Q. What should I do if I have concerns about memory and thinking for myself or a loved one?

If you, a family member, or friend has problems remembering recent events or thinking clearly, talk with a doctor. Learn more at alz.org or by contacting our 24/7 Helpline at 800.272.3900 or helplinegmc@alz.org.

Graceful and Grateful

I’m very pleased to introduce you to the first issue of our new quarterly magazine, Graceful Living. Autumn is a season of reflection and gratitude, so it feels particularly fitting that we share this important new resource at a time when we have so much to be grateful for as a mission focused non-profit organization.

In each issue, we’ll work with our communities and programs across Michigan to highlight our State’s natural beauty, fun activities and events, seasonally-inspired recommendations, helpful tips from experts on everything from aging well to smart technology, and more.

For our first issue, we’re highlighting our independent living communities in Northern Michigan. We chose Alpena Pines, Lynn Street Manor, Hillside, and Perry Farm Village because they’re located in an area of Michigan that is especially gorgeous during Autumn. Our team has curated some excellent recommendations for outdoor activities and events in the Northern Michigan area that we hope will help you and your loved ones make lovely seasonal memories.

We’re grateful that we’re able to share some of the wonderful experiences, attractions, and services that both PVM and Michigan have to offer. I hope that you’ll enjoy reading this new resource as much as our team enjoyed putting it together for you.

With continued appreciation and warmest gratitude,

Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation (PHSACF) Helps Vulnerable Emmet County Seniors

We’re grateful for the recent grant from PHSACF that has enhanced the quality of life of 38 residents of The Village of Hillside in Harbor Springs. Funds were used to purchase 14 AC units and 16 upgraded smoke detectors that feature both sound and flashing light alarms. Visual alarms are especially important for seniors who may experience hearing loss, and can result in more successful evacuation and rescue efforts by first responders. The grant also provided emergency financial support to another 8 residents in the form of specialized medical equipment and more.
