On June 8th, the 21st annual Calvin, Sterling and Peterson Mission Makers Societies Luncheon was held at Comerica Park in the beautiful Tiger Club overlooking the field. This annual event recognizes members of the PVM Foundation’s giving societies for their generous support of the PVM mission. Guests enjoyed a private, guided tour of the ballpark followed by a wonderful lunch and program, which included the celebration of selected Board members for their extraordinary service.

CAMPAIGN PROJECT
The Statewide Comprehensive Campaign goal is to raise $27.4 million by the end of 2017. As of July 2015, over $23 million has been raised for major capital campaigns, wellness programming, individual Village needs, Benevolence (resident assistance) and home and community-based services.
THE EDWARD N. AND DELLA L. THOME RIVERTOWN NEIGHBORHOOD Fundraising Completed: $9,903,572 The Edward N. and Della L. Thome Rivertown Neighborhood in Detroit is a unique collaborative project that delivers a full spectrum of health and wellness services and affordable housing options for low-income seniors on one campus. Renovation plans continue for the final phase of The Thome Rivertown Neighborhood that includes the following components in one building:

apartments for the frailest of seniors who are participants of PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly). Design work is underway with construction expected to begin by fall.
• A community center/café on the first floor, under the Weinberg Green Houses, will offer programs and services to residents and the surrounding community. Planning for the design and use of the space is underway. A student group from USC Berkley that visited in late spring provided conceptual planning and analysis, the outcomes of which will be used to help continue the planning. Construction is also expected to begin by fall. • The rooftop RiverGarden will serve as a community park for residents, their families and community members to enjoy.
A start date will be determined once work on the other components have begun.
Phase I of The Thome Rivertown Neighborhood opened in 2013 and includes 80 affordable assisted living units, a partnership with United Methodist Retirement Communities, Inc. (UMRC); PACE Southeast Michigan (formerly the Center for Senior Independence), a partnership with Henry Ford Health System that offers the nationally recognized Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, a comprehensive adult daycare and health services program; and 50 affordable independent living apartments that opened August 2014, also in partnership with UMRC.

The Health & Wellness Center will bring a new, state-of-the-art center to The Village of East Harbor campus, allowing staff to deliver more effective treatment. Specialized rehabilitation and therapy services will be provided to resident and community seniors in a much larger space with the latest equipment available and highly-trained staff.

The center will also offer general exercise and gym amenities so that residents and community seniors can stay healthy and maintain their rehabilitation. Additional fitness classes and programming will also be offered.
THE VILLAGE OF HILLSIDE/ FRIENDSHIP CENTER RENEWAL CAMPAIGN Goal by December 31, 2015: $1,500,000 Raised through July 2015: $1,100,500 Left to Raise: $399,500 A July 12th fundraiser hosted by Fred and Mary Walstrom at The Boathouse of Harbor Springs raised more than $129,000 for The Village of Hillside/Friendship Center Renewal Campaign. Approximately 150 guests attended the cocktail reception, which featured a strolling dinner and beverages donated by local businesses as well
as entertainment by The Young Americans. The renewal project will replace the oldest buildings on campus with 32 new, affordable senior apartments accessible to seniors with disabilities and will triple the size of the Friendship Center to accommodate more programs and serve more local seniors. This project holds special meaning for Fred Walstrom, co-chair of the campaign fundraising committee, and his siblings, Ward Walstrom and Karin Flint. They continue the legacy of their mother, Roma Walstrom Bolline, who was instrumental in bringing affordable senior housing to Harbor Springs in the 1970s.

SENATE FINANCE COMMITTEE APPROVES EXPIRED GIVING INCENTIVES On July 21, the Senate Finance Committee passed “An Original Bill to Extend Certain Expired Tax Provisions.” The tax extenders bill would reinstate for the 2015 and 2016 tax years a package of expired tax provisions, including the following provisions important to donors: • IRA Charitable Rollover –IRA owners over age 70½ may transfer up to $100,000 each year directly from the IRA custodian to qualified charities. • Enhanced Deduction for Land Conservation Easements – land owners may give up development rights to their property for purposes of preserving natural resources. • Enhanced Deduction for Food Inventory Donations – individuals and corporations may provide qualifying food inventory to certain charitable organizations. If the House and Senate pass the bill, the President may sign it by the end of September, potentially allowing donors a greater opportunity to plan for 2015 IRA charitable rollover gifts.

PVM Foundation Mission Statement The Presbyterian Villages of Michigan (PVM) Foundation advances the PVM Mission by providing philanthropic support for resident emergency needs, innovative services and wellness programs for residents and seniors throughout the state.
Ruthenia continues to serve as a Board member at The Village of Harmony Manor and remains actively involved with other organizations including the Presbytery of Detroit women’s group, Michigan Black Presbyterian Caucus, Detroit Area Agency on Agency, AARP and the Shelton and Louise Tapps chapter (affiliated with the Metro Detroit Council of Senior Citizens). As she tells her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, we cannot live alone; living is about loving. “PVM has such meaning and gives seniors a better quality of life, not just for those who live there, but for those to come,” says Ruthenia. “It means a lot to me to see people happy in the later years of their lives and I’m so happy to be a part of it.”
