70 & Still Making Waves 2015 ushered in PVM’s 70th Anniversary celebration with the theme: 70 & Still Making Waves. Its founding year of 1945, at what is now The Village of Redford, was a year for the history books: one of international affairs and innovation, the year of V-E Day and V-J Day. The United Nations was established. It was a year which launched cruise control for cars, the first electronic computer and the microwave oven. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) created the first commercial broadcasting system. The careers of Gene Autry, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, The King Cole Trio, Glenn Miller and Frank Sinatra were going strong. And it was the year in which Presbyterian Villages of Michigan first began to “make waves” for the betterment of seniors and the community by becoming a leader in housing. Thus began our culture of philanthropy with the donation of $10,000 by Clarence D. Sterling to help build this first village. Today we celebrate Mr. Sterling’s vision at our annual Calvin, Sterling and Peterson Mission Makers Societies Luncheon.

Today we continue to “make waves” with innovation, philanthropy and strong partnerships to boldly venture into new ways of providing housing and services. This will position PVM well into the future and maintain our reputation and commitment as a leader in senior housing and services. We also serve the community at large and have begun to expand home and community-based services to meet the ever-changing needs of seniors and their families. We have been fortunate over this past seventy years to have talented and dedicated leaders who continue to “make waves” with bold action. In capturing the essence of this 70th Anniversary, we have chosen to provide a portrait of some unique individuals who helped PVM deliver on the promise of enhancing the lives of seniors and the communities we serve.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Presbyterian Villages of Michigan, We are pleased to share the 70th Anniversary Annual Report for 2015 and want to thank you for your leadership and service throughout this past year. 2015 will be noted in the future as a transformational year which has shaped the future of PVM for decades to come. This important work will guide us in meeting the present and future needs of Michigan seniors and their families with healthy aging. As we honor our seventy year tradition for “making waves” as innovators, we look to the future with a sense of excitement for what lies ahead and serving Michigan seniors for another seventy years and beyond. Some of the major accomplishments which PVM achieved in 2015 can be summarized with: • Development of a revised system-wide Strategic Plan for 2016-2018, including an integrated Capital Financial Plan. • Continued growth of home and community based initiatives, including the launch of CareSync Solutions, Enhanced Service Coordination and the expansion of PACE Southeast Michigan. • Successful divestment of licensed portions of The Village of Redford campus to a compatible new “partner” organization and completion of the campus’ independent living expansion. • Strong progress on the system-wide comprehensive philanthropic campaign, exceeding the annual goal. • Implementation of new affiliations and collaborative relationships. • Launch of a new digital media strategy to include a total retooling of the PVM website. Presbyterian Villages of Michigan Profiles In capturing the essence of our 70th Anniversary year in 2015, we have chosen to highlight the people who continued to “make waves” as leaders and examples of aging well and embracing the possibilities of a life well lived. Here are some of the unique individuals who helped PVM deliver on the promise of enhancing the lives of seniors and the communities we serve:

JUDY BYWRA

Judy is still making waves in a very positive way. As a long-time and enthusiastic fan of Good Morning America, this past year Judy made an appearance on its 40th Anniversary show. Judy was originally selected for the “Breakfast in Bed With Emeril” feature for a Mother’s Day show years ago. She had a very compelling story; and was nominated by the young twin “daughters” whom she raised from high school and college years. Their mother, who was a long-time friend for twenty years but had not lived near Judy

for many of those years, passed away while her daughters were still in high school. Judy kept her promise to raise them as her own, left a successful career in Washington D.C. and moved back to Michigan to raise them in their own home. She never thought about it twice and never looked back. She takes pride and joy in knowing that she made the difference in their lives and honored her friend. As in many acts of selflessness, Judy has reaped the joy associated with giving. Her friends at The Village of Hillside have stated that she is still a go-getter in every sense of the word. During this 40th Anniversary Show on November 19, 2015, GMA, along with Emeril and Ford Motor Company, presented Judy with a brand new Ford Escape! Congratulations Judy. Your positive take on life is an inspiration to all.

RON HANCHETT

2015 was a stellar year for Mr. Hanchett since he is a lifelong Tigers fan. In front of his family and fellow Village of Westland residents, he had the honor of throwing out the first pitch on May 14, 2015 at Comerica Park. A World War II veteran, he is very outgoing and optimistic. Ron has persevered through life’s ups and downs even with the loss of his spouse of 68 years in 2011. A former Blue Ribbon awardee at the Clare County Fair, Ron enjoys cooking, fishing, bingo, and being independent. He was also recently nominated by PVM to be highlighted on the I Am Senior Strong website for the Senior Regional Collaborative. Annual Report 2015 | 5

CAROLYN HASTINGS

PVM Board member Carolyn Hastings enjoyed a distinguished career as a leader in senior services. She was the director of the Housing Bureau for Seniors in Ann Arbor, Michigan, for many years and was known as an innovator. She has also been an active member of her community and involved in intergenerational programs. Since her retirement, she has found new ways to serve, such as on the PVM Board. Carolyn is an example of living life to the fullest and making waves in new and different ways. She has been exploring the world in a global way more recently with many travels beyond our borders. She is not only an

excellent ambassador for PVM, but also as an example of American citizens. Carolyn has always been fascinated by other cultures and other ways of living… about where people live, the sight of beautiful temples and gardens, and animals in their natural habitat. Her travels have taken her to Japan, Africa, Alaska, Mexico, Morocco, India, Nepal, Tibet and Italy. This world traveler expands PVM’s horizons with her contributions in the realm of strategic planning.

THOMAS E. KIMBLE

A PVM Foundation Board member, Thomas E. Kimble is the State President of AARP, the lead volunteer and spokesperson in Michigan for 1.5 million AARP Michigan members. Retired from General Motors, he is a former vice chairman of the GM Foundation and served in several other key roles at General Motors. These included director of the auto company’s Global Philanthropic Administration and Comptroller of plants in Pontiac, Michigan. Tom has served on numerous boards and as Chair of the State of Michigan Workforce Development Board.

MOTOKO HUTHWAITE

An 11 year veteran employee with the PVM Foundation, Valerie Stokes received the Shining Star Award this year at an event honoring PVM employees who exhibit the principles of our Service Excellence Program, and are greatly respected by their fellow employees. Indeed, this lead award is voted upon by peers in the organization. She previously worked for Sinai Grace Hospital for many years prior to coming to the PVM Foundation. Valerie retired at the end of 2015 but still visits once in a while. She will always be considered part of the PVM family. She will now be able to spend more time with family. Her grandson, in particular, has been looking forward to her retirement for some time and has informed us that we cannot recruit her back. Congratulations and best wishes to Valerie.

Members of Congress recently honored the six surviving “Monuments Men” with the Congressional Gold Medal. During World War II the 350 members of the “Monuments Men” included men and women from 13 countries who sought out and protected cultural artifacts from the Nazis. Their mission was to recover, protect, preserve and return these stolen artifacts. A recent movie depicted their mission. This ceremony recognized them for preserving the culture of Western civilization for generations to come. The work of artists such as Rembrandt, Michaelangelo, Donatello and others were a part of this treasure trove. These works are now being exhibited in museums around the world.

At the recent Congressional ceremony in Washington, D.C., only a few of the surviving six members were able to make the journey. We are pleased to report that one of these heroes in attendance was Motoko Huthwaite, a resident of The Village at Westland. Congratulations Motoko, we are proud to have such a courageous and heroic person in our midst. This information was gathered from remarks at the Congressional ceremony.

2015 Accomplishments PVM also launched and expanded services for enhanced living. Some highlights include:

CareSync Solutions

Care Sync SOLUT I ONS Keeping You Healthy

Homestead Home Health Care Services and PVM joined together to create this new joint venture as a result of a seven year pilot project at The Village of Westland in providing enhanced services to its residents. The combination of high satisfaction by participants and a recognition of a far greater need, CareSync Solutions was founded to ultimately serve residents of all PVM Villages and residents of communities across Michigan. A comprehensive array of services have been made available from individually tailored service plans, care management, counseling services, discharge planning or skilled nursing and therapy. The goal is to assist seniors to live their best life whenever possible in their own home.

PACE Southeast Michigan PVM has partnered with Henry Ford Health System for some time in providing several PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) programs in Detroit. In 2015 the name was changed to PACE Southeast Michigan to denote its expanded range of locations with further expansion scheduled to open in Macomb County and Oakland County. (2016) Services provided include care and services in the home, the community and the Day Health Center. Many of the participants receive most of their care from the staff in the centers. PACE Southeast Michigan has contracts with many specialists to make sure that unique needs are met. This joint venture was created as a way to provide participants, their families and/or caregivers and professional health care providers flexibility as well as assist seniors to remain in their own homes.

Metro In-Home Solutions 2015 also ushered in the final plans needed to launch Metro In-Home Solutions. Four reputable long-standing organizations in Michigan with an accumulation of 300 years of experience joined forces to create this unique joint venture. Along with PVM they include Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, Jewish Family Services and Southwest Solutions. Metro In-Home Solutions will provide home repair and retrofitting of homes to allow seniors to remain independent. All four organizations have observed the need for these services and note that in many cases this great need may be the major factor in supporting independence. In order for someone to return to their home from a hospitalization they need a safe and accessible environment. Studies were conducted which show thousands of homes are in need of these services. Third party payers, grants from business and philanthropy and private pay options will be utilized to support this endeavor. 8 | Presbyterian Villages of Michigan

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

HILLSIDE

PVM launched several new initiatives which will help to maintain its standing as a leader in living and services. Here are a few highlights:

The Village of Hillside The Village of Hillside Friendship Renewal Campaign will replace the oldest buildings on the campus with new affordable senior apartments accessible to seniors with disabilities and will triple the size of the Friendship Center from its current 600 square feet to 2,000 square feet. This will allow for increased programming and services to help enhance the quality of life for all involved. The new Village of Hillside will meet the increasing needs of Harbor Springs seniors and allow them to age in their community while providing them with quality affordable housing, an accessible and spacious community center, linkage to needed services and opportunities to stay involved with the vibrant Harbor Springs community.

Hartford Village Hartford Village will open its doors in fall 2016, and is the culmination of a strong partnership between Hartford Memorial Baptist Church and PVM. The first of its kind in Detroit, Hartford Village will allow vibrant members of the community to remain in their own community as well. This venture began two years ago at 17500 Meyers Road

with the goal of also revitalizing a neighborhood important to Detroit. Along with Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, it is home to the Northwest Activity Center, a hub of activity for the area. Residents will also be able to enjoy nearby shopping, arts and culture entities and university atmosphere. The campus will include 39 independent living cottages with two bedrooms and bathrooms. It will also include an apartment building that will house 45 one-and-two bedroom apartments. This beautifully landscaped, gated community will offer a maintenance-free lifestyle and provide amenities which include raised gardens, wellness programs, a fitness room and many other options for healthy living choices.

HARTFORD VILLAGE

The Village of East Harbor The Transitional Care Unit, which provides rehabilitation care, is gaining momentum. Plans are underway to partner with nearby hospitals to prevent unnecessary hospitalizations as well as provide more effective planning and quality care after a hospital stay and during rehabilitation. Plans are also underway for the Health & Wellness Center, a larger

Presbyterian Villages stakeholders live by the philosophy that our communities are only as strong as our most vulnerable citizens. Thousands of hours were invested throughout 2015 to enhance local communities, our state and our nation.

Continued service was provided in the form of board leadership with university, gubernatorial and aging service organizations. Residents, staff, board members and their families joined together to assist others with clothing, food, personal items, transportation, wellness, immunizations, tax preparation and blankets for vulnerable infants. Health fairs, benefits counseling programs and summer youth employment programs added to outreach efforts. Seminars were conducted for caregivers on topics such as dementia, community resources. senior housing, financial concerns and emotional issues. PVM teams also participated in the annual Alzheimerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Walk and in a Detroit Bike-A-Thon benefit the Neighborhood Service Organization (NSO), a neighbor of The Village of Oakman Manor. Some new offerings included: The Village of Oakland Woods hosted a community event which was planned by a resident committee with several hundred neighbors and friends enjoying a visit by The Detroit Pistons, a health fair and games for the children in attendance along with a picnic lunch. A Veterans Day celebration was held to thank Legacy Corps volunteers and honor veterans at The Thome Rivertown Senior Apartments. Assistance was given to The Village of Westland victims of a fire and donations made as a thank you to the Westland Fire Department. The Village of East Harbor helped out Gleaners Food Bank with preparing donations for their annual food drive. Many other notable philanthropic efforts were made by PVM Villages to enhance the communities they serve. SOCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY & COMMUNITY SERVICE

Strategic Alliance for Aging in Communities (SAAIC) Funded by the generosity of the Edward N. and Della L. Thome Foundation, the SAAIC was formed in 2012 by the Luella Hannan Memorial Foundation and PVM. The University of Michigan joined this powerful alliance in 2013. In 2015 the SAAIC secured assistance from the Wayne State Institute of Gerontology to help sharpen its focus on developing innovative strategies that assist older adults in remaining independent, active, vibrant contributors to their community and to position the alliance for further success.

Community Connections Founded by the SAAIC in 2013, Community Connections is a community-based, member-driven organization formed to assist older adults in creating and obtaining the support they need to continue living in their own homes and being active contributors to their local community. Organized into chapters, each chapter hosts educational and informational forums that address the needs, interests, and concerns that are specific to their individual members. Chapter members also have the opportunity to engage in a variety of programs and events design to enhance their health and well-being that they themselves help plan and organize. Examples include paddle board classes, day trips, yoga, walking clubs, book clubs, pickle ball, and much more. The first chapter opened in 2013 in Midtown Detroit; the second in 2015 in Harbor Springs. During 2015 Community Connections also continued its collaboration with the City of Westland to help them achieve designation as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Community For A Lifetimeâ&#x20AC;? by the State of Michigan.

ADVOCACY

Dedicated to advocacy by assisting others with their quality of life. By working with major coalitions we are able to enact change for the betterment of all. Organizations we partner with include: LeadingAge, LeadingAge Michigan, Area Agencies on Aging, Silver Key Coalition, Senior Regional Collaborative, Senior Housing Preservation-Detroit and elder abuse prevention groups at a local regional and state level. Southeast Michigan Senior Regional Collaborative (SEMISRC) The SEMISRC is a collaborative of 28 organizations who jointly serve over 200,000 seniors throughout Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties. Founded in 2008, the SEMISRC was created to address the needs of older adults while remaining independent and aging in community. It was founded to develop a regional framework for advocacy, awareness and action in support of issues affecting the safety and quality of life of older adults. In 2015 the SEMISRC created a website in support of the campaign: “I Am Senior Strong” to showcase the talents and contributions of older adults in Michigan. Members also work in harmony with advocacy campaigns and events such as The Silver Key Campaign and Older Michiganians Day.

Senior Housing Preservation-Detroit Silver Key Coalition The Silver Key Coalition (SKC) formed in 2013 with the goal of increasing access to key state in-home services funded through the Older Michiganians Act and the Michigan Aging and Adult Services Agency (AASA). Using a data driven approach, the coalition advocated for a funding increase of $10 million over 3 years to eliminate wait lists and fully meet the needs of older adults waiting for services such as home-delivered meals and personal care.

Senior Housing PreservationDetroit is a coalition of organizations and individuals who are dedicated to the preservation of subsidized low income senior housing in Detroit. Known for advocacy, the members of Senior Housing Preservation-Detroit have come together to increase awareness of the displacement of Detroit Seniors and to communicate the need for action to protect their rights and well-being.

Governor Snyder and the Michigan Legislature made a strong commitment to Michigan’s vulnerable older adults appropriating $5 million for FY 2015 to serve the 4,500 older adults on wait lists for services in 2014.

WELLNESS

PVM is dedicated to creating communities which embrace Wellness. We stand out from many senior living communities via our director of Wellness, Tom Wyllie. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in not only aging services but sports and performance. By creating Wellness experiences which are fun as well as beneficial, Tom has created the concept of “stealth health”.

Embedding fitness and Tai Chi seminars into our Villages, as well as falls prevention programs and nutrition classes, PVM has helped seniors transform the way they live and age. The PVM signature event which embodies all of this is the Village Victory Cup. The competition is fierce; and resident engagement adds to the mix. Residents from across southeast Michigan converged in Pontiac to participate in the 10th Annual Village Victory Cup. For the second year in a row the judges selected the Monarchs from The Village of Our Saviour’s Manor as the winner of the Spirit Award. And for the second time in three years, the Stars from The Village of Westland captured the Village Victory Cup. Congratulations to the Monarchs and the Stars and to everyone who participated in this year’s event. It was definitely one to remember. While the Villages in SE Michigan were battling for the Village Victory Cup, Villages located 100 or more miles from the PVM Home office battled for the Virtual Village Victory Cup. This year a record 66 residents from 7 Villages participated in the 5th annual rendition of this event. When the final scores were tallied the Bizzy-B’s from The Village of Spring Meadows II emerged victorious. The Spring Chickens from The Village of Spring Meadows I captured the Spirit Award. 2015 Through the Eyes of PVM Residents and Their Families

A Best Place to Age PVM Villages continued the fine tradition represented by seventy years of service. Residents, staff and board members created a unique blend of stakeholders who made waves in a positive way with innovation, advocacy and service excellence. Memories were made; and life enhancing services were provided. Opportunities to volunteer and live with purpose were created. PVM Villages also increased their outreach to serve their local communities. Often economic development has been considered a separate endeavor from senior services; yet PVM stakeholders have helped to have a significant and positive impact on local economies and neighborhoods. They have also touched lives one person at a time. Some participants related that they could hardly move and are now participating in the annul Village Victory Cup and joining

in on walking clubs. Residents have reported that this is the best home in which they have ever lived. A member of a card club related that since the death of her husband she had lost life’s luster and had been withdrawing. Her club members have encouraged her to reach out to others and become involved. Now she has found her way back to living a full and vibrant life. These are among hundreds of stories reflecting our motto to “embrace the possibilities” which life has to offer. At every Village everyday PVM fans are finding new and different ways to live life to the fullest. Let’s keep in mind: “Age is a privilege denied to many.” The Village Roster found on the next several pages depicts how PVM residents and consumers have lived out the notion of “a best place to age” in 2015.

The Village of Bethany Manor opened in 1997 and was PVM’s first community built in the City of Detroit. Noland Award for Nonprofit Leadership The Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan announced that Roger L. Myers, president and CEO of Presbyterian Villages of Michigan (PVM), was selected as the recipient of the 2015 Mariam C. Noland Award for Nonprofit Leadership. The award was presented at the Community Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual meeting. Named after the Community Foundationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first and current president, this annual award recognizes a nonprofit president or CEO in southeast Michigan (LEFT TO RIGHT): JAMES B. The award recipient receives a grant of $10,000 from the Community Foundation, with the preference that it be used for executive leadership development opportunities.

Woman of Excellence Award from the Michigan Chronicle Senior vice president of Human Resources, LaDonna Holley, received a Woman of Excellence Award from The Michigan Chronicle. This prestigious award is given to one who exemplifies the stature, poise, and grace that characterize the essence of womanhood, all while maintaining the delicate balance of filling the roles of helpmate, mother, teacher, and professional. A Woman of Excellence is also the champion of our economic empowerment and diversity, the backbone of our religious and

educational organizations, and driving forces in politics and community service.

Call to Justice Leadership Award from Elder Law of Michigan Vice president of Public Affairs, Lynn Alexander, received the Call To Justice Leadership Award from Elder Law of Michigan. The Call To Justice Award honors those that share the mission of Elder Law of Michigan (ELM) to advocate for, educate, and assist many different people, with a continued focus of older adults and persons with disabilities. It provides an opportunity to recognize the people and organizations that are making a real and tangible difference in the lives of seniors every day.

LeadingAge Michigan Honors PVM’s Legacy of Leadership Each year during their annual awards gala, LeadingAge Michigan honors those who embody excellence in leadership, care, and service innovation, and who are making outstanding contributions in their communities and the field of long-term care. The awards celebrate stories of employees, volunteers, residents, programs, communities, efforts, initiatives, best practices, and organizations that made a significant difference in the lives of others.

This year, PVM and its dedicated employees have received a number of the 2015 Awards. For the Life Member Award, Joan Sonnenberg, long-time administrator for The Village of East Harbor, was selected. She recently retired after 22 years of dedicated service and will be missed by all of us for many years to come. For the Leading-Edge Care Award, The Thome Rivertown Neighborhood was chosen. Known nationally as a best practice model, PVM, United Methodist Retirement Communities, Henry Ford Health System and PACE Southeast Michigan shared in the honors. PVM staff members who received Honorable Mention Awards in the category of Caring Spirit are Bill Borum, Marissa More and Pauline Zeig. Dale Kincaid received an Honorable Mention Award in the category of Individual Volunteer of the Year. These awards capture the spirit and dedication of PVM and our partners. Congratulations to all the awardees.

McManus Distinguished Lecturer 2015 PVM President & CEO Roger Myers was invited as a McManus Distinguished Lecturer for 2015 at Madonna University. Established in 1989 by Michael F. McManus, Jr.,

in memory of his father – a successful entrepreneur and inspiration to many. Lecturers are invited, from a variety of industries, “who epitomize the spirit of entrepreneurship, leadership and perseverance.

Crain’s Detroit Business 40 Under 40 Award Bunia Parker, Village of Bethany Manor Board Chair and Principal for Summit Commercial LLC, Detroit received a Crain’s Detroit Business 40 Under 40 Award. This award honors professionals in Southeast Michigan who have made their marks before age 40. Professionals selected have launched companies, helped grow established firms, made health care advancements, boosted community engagement and helped veterans. Mr. Parker has played a major role in the revitalization of Detroit real estate and has always had entrepreneurial leanings even before going into the real estate brokerage industry having owned a business in Detroit. He has played a significant role in the success of PVM along with the City of Detroit.

FINANCIALS

Dear Friends & Supporters, We are pleased to report that the Presbyterian Villages of Michigan’s (PVM) system-wide 2015 financial performance for the entities it manages met our strategic and budgeted expectations. And our financial position remains strong. A key performance indicator is PVM’s ability to meet our principal and interest payments and capital replacement reserve requirements, or debt service coverage ratio. For the entities PVM manages the system-wide ratio was 1.57 in 2015. The other key measure, the days cash on hand ratio, stood at 106 days at December 31, 2015. We were able to achieve these important indicators due to a continued emphasis on innovation, cost containment, stronger collections efforts, fund raising, and capital financing. PVM successfully executed its divestment in a portion of The Village of Redford, refinanced its tax exempt bonds and commercial debt, and implemented numerous other capital financing and refinancing initiatives to improve PVM’s overall financial position and debt capacity going forward. The PVM Foundation’s Statewide Comprehensive Campaign continued its strong performance, exceeding the annual goal and raising $2.8 million. The actively managed investment portfolio yielded a 2.8% return in 2015, which was above the negative 0.48% indexed benchmark. The overall market values of the PVM Foundation’s investments were $12.4 million at December 31, 2015, down from the $14.7 million at the end of 2014, primarily due to the deployment of temporarily restricted funds for innovative housing projects. The overall asset value of PVM’s system-wide managed entities was $198 million as of December 31, 2015, down from $202 million in 2014. Our system-wide net assets (equity) plus forgivable HUD 202 capital advances represent 51% of the total asset value at December 31, 2015. The consistency from year to year demonstrates a strong growth and net asset (equity) position, in spite of nearly $8 million in annual depreciation. We are pleased to report that of the 33 PVM managed affiliates subject to third party audit or review, there were no matters of material internal control deficiencies, and only one lessor significant deficiency in 2015 and all reports received a clean opinion. In June 2015, FitchRatings affirmed the PVM Obligated Group’s BB+ rating and “Stable” Outlook. We encourage you to visit the PVM website to review our complete financial results and disclosures. Regina Lawson, a resident of Thome Rivertown Senior Apartments (Detroit), was the first ever resident Master of Ceremonies at the 12th Annual PVM Foundation Gala. She was nervous but took on the charge of entertaining over 550 guests. In her words, this event was her shining moment of 2015, a highlight she will always cherish. Since the gala, Regina has evolved into a leader on the Thome Rivertown campus. Your gifts do change lives! The Village of Holly Woodlands has a new 18-passenger bus with, for the first time, a wheelchair lift. For Carmen Ormsby, this means a new lease on life. Carmen is in a wheelchair and, until now, had relied on others for transportation. When the shiny new bus arrived last fall, she was overcome with tears of joy. Lastly, Lois Manville is a proud, lifelong resident of Harbor Springs and has lived at The Village of Hillside for many of those years. Recently, Lois experienced serious health issues and living at Hillside had become tricky. Without elevators, climbing three flights of stairs to her apartment was a monumental task. STRATEGIC PLAN & OBJECTIVES

Strategic Directions and Initiatives 2016 – 2018 As we celebrate our past we look to the future for ways to continue making waves and embracing new ways of enhancing lives. In 2015 we embarked on an intensive strategic planning process which resulted in a bold and aggressive Strategic Initiatives and Implementation Plans have been developed to outline the steps necessary to advance the Strategic Directions. The Strategic Planning Committee has prioritized the Strategic Initiatives, for the purpose of enabling PVM staff to develop an Implementation Plan that sequences the Strategic Initiatives. This prioritization is reflected in the draft Implementation Plan and graphically depicted on the following slide. Those Strategic Initiatives designated as “Urgent” are labeled as “Level 1”. Those classified as “Necessary” are labeled as “Level 2” and those identified initially as “Helpful” are labeled as “Level 3”. I. R ebalance and strengthen the Village portfolio. (Increasing the number of market rate living units at a faster rate than the increase in the number of affordable living units – through affiliation, acquisition, divestiture and development.)

1.1 C omplete the prioritized renewal and expansion of two market rate communities (Village of East Harbor and Village of Westland). Priority 1 1.2 Develop and execute an affiliation strategy. Priority 2

1.3 Continue to invest in the new development and renewal of affordable housing options. Priority 2

3 serving a balanced number of individuals and families who choose subsidized, affordable and/or market rate accommodations, programs and services options.

3 serving an exponentially larger number of people through home and community based services.

3 continuing to partner and collaborate with others. 3 achieving increased profitability and return on investment from strategic initiatives and operations.

3 greater intentional state-wide focus across Michigan markets, along with opportunities for growth having developed in surrounding states.

• Has strength (financial, people, technology and other resources²) – resulting, in part, from the transformation and growth. • Demonstrates that service and technology are integral. The link between the two became increasingly critical to achieving the transformation and growth – and particularly in creating ‘new possibilities for quality living’. • Is measurably and demonstrably enhancing lives and communities – using research to validate the impact, to educate and to continually evolve.

In order to achieve the 2030 ‘portrait’, during the next three years, PVM will pursue three strategic directions.
