LANTERN Presentation High School Parent Newsletter | January 2018

Welcome back!

Community Involvement would like to thank all of the students, parents, alums, parent's of alums, faculty and staff, and neighbors that contributed to this year's Holiday Drives. Thanks to your support and generosity our community was able to donate the following:

In addition, we raised over $21,000 during penny drive ($12,000 of which were coins!) and another $31,000 from the proceeds of Black and White Charity Ball. All of donations for Food Drive, Toy Drive and the $52,000 was given to Sacred Heart Community Service to benefit their Thanksgiving and Christmas food and toy programs. Overall, we helped serve over 1,000 families this holiday season. We are so blessed to be a part of a community that not only supports one another, but our sisters and brothers who are most in need. We hope you all had a blessed holiday season. Happy New Year!

Attendance Office

Club Spotlight: LatinX

Here are a few reminders from the Attendance Office

LatinX, a new club on campus this year, was formed by a group of students of latina descent and their allies. Since its inception just a few short months ago, the club has enjoyed enormous success and an outpouring of support from the Presentation student body. At the first club meeting alone there were over 50 students present! The student leaders of LatinX collaborated with Campus Ministry and other student organizations to plan the September 14 rally in support of DACA recipients. The club made posters for the rally and two club officers, seniors Laurenn Vives and Claudia Pedroza, spoke at the rally and were featured on the NBC Bay Area news. In November, LatinX officers worked in conjunction with CI to create an altar to celebrate the Day of the Dead. Most recently, seniors Mirella Tsegay, Sintia Marquez, Laurelle Manriquez-Flores, Morgan Calhoun, Tiffany Lopez, Nicole Muñoz and the rest of the club officers have worked tirelessly to plan the club’s most recent event: Presentation’s first ever Cultural Student Union’s Culture Fair! In conjunction with two other new clubs this year: the Asian Student Union and Jazba (Presentation’s Bollywood dance team), LatinX hosted over 100 students at the Culture Fair! The celebration featured food, games, dance, music and crafts from all over the world. In December, LatinX will celebrate the Virgen de Guadalupe before breaking for finals. Lots of adventures await LatinX in the spring semester!

College Counseling

Campus Ministry

With most college applications submitted, the anticipation of admissions decisions are top of mind for some students. In this era of social media, electronic updates, and selfies, the wait might seem unnatural. Instant gratification is not possible with a time compressed process like college admissions. The energy and resources devoted to turnaround such decisions is an immense endeavor. Consider using this waiting period as a time to reflect on the current state of your college process.

Welcome back! Happy New Year! Through the many retreats and liturgies of this spring semester, our goal is to provide prayer experiences that encourage your daughters to open their hearts to God and receive the peace and joy that God’s love has to offer them.

By MaryLynne Rodriguez | Director of College Counseling

If you submitted a college application for a four year institution be aware of others electing for the community college route or considering art & design schools, military, music, or performing arts/theater based options. If you have been accepted to a school, congratulations, a college would like you to attend their institution. Regardless of where it stands on your list, recognize your achievement. Do not take it for granted because there are students who wish they knew. Whether it is an aspirational school or a foundation school, treat it like a gift. If you have been advised to submit new or additional materials understand you are still being considered. You remain a viable candidate. If you are still waiting, remember, no news is no news. Make the most of this opportunity. If you end up receiving unfavorable news, keep the long view in mind. A denial is not forever. It means, not right now. It might feel disappointing, but this decision is not life defining. The college admissions process will be one of many experiences where the outcome might not be what you hoped it to be, but will work out in the end. Be grateful for the possibilities beyond Presentation. Regardless of where you go and what you pursue, remember the communities who have been there all along. Embrace the journey ahead. Wear your own shoes and forge your own path. 4

The Lantern | January 2018

On January 16 our candidates for Confirmation and their sponsors will meet for an evening focused on prayer. The first disciples asked our savior Jesus Christ to teach them to pray (Luke 11:1) and this question is still relevant for the Christian community today. Prayer is an important part of an adult relationship with God and our confirmation candidates and their sponsors will learn more about different styles of prayer and how to integrate prayer into their daily lives. We ask that you pray for them as well, especially as we approach the Lenten and Easter seasons. The first of two Senior Retreats is happening on January 25-26; this retreat is devoted to coming to know God’s call – in yourself, through others, in prayer, through challenge, and in acts of service. 55 seniors will retreat overnight to the Jesuit Retreat Center in Los Altos. There are still spots on our Sophomore and Junior retreats in the spring semester. Retreats are free and open to students of all faiths. Interested students should fill out a retreat registration packet (which can be downloaded from the ‘Faith and Service’ section of the Presentation website). Many blessings for a healthy 2018!
