Recently, Lombardi, along with its Indian representative, Vinsak organised an Open House highlighting the country’s first Lombardi Synchroline 430 Flexo Press installed at A & A Labels. Lombardi is a global brand. The brand is successful in different parts of the world and the company is expanding its ever expanding network. Speaking
to PRESSIdeas on the occasion, Mr. Massimo Lombardi, owner Lombardi Converting Machinery S.r.l. commented: “Lombardi is replicating its worldwide success in new expanding markets. We have successfully marked our presence in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Africa with installations in countries across all continents – in Brazil, Nigeria, Ghana, Algeria as well as Europe. With 135 installations, the Lombardi Flexoline and Synchroline machines are known for their low wastage, quick changeover between jobs and high degree of automation. Synchroline is an upgrade of much popular Flexoline launched in 2007. It answers the need of printers to print on extensible materials meant for packaging industry. The key advantage Synchroline technology provides printers is that it provides a perfect answer to the issues related to registration. The machine is equipped with printing groups governed singularly by brushless motors and the setting and maintenance of the printing register of the whole press is governed by the electric board with a system of register control. This enables real time correction of any deviation from register due to extension of material. Furthermore, Electronic tension control ensures perfect tensioning of different substrates. “For printers, it translates to maximum

versatility and the possibility of working on a wide gamma of materials,” says Massimo. The Hi-DynamiX system of the machine enables that the blade is pressured against the anilox roller with pneumatic system, determining an auto-adaptive pressure dynamic, resulting in the best ink distribution. Hi-InX system ensures easy cleaning – when the machine stops, the ink roller (anilox) is first removed, followed by the print cylinder. It comes in handy when excess ink is cleaned especially when non-UV inks are being used. Then there is Hi-FiT system which is an innovative system to allow easy fitting of cylinders of different diameter without any adapter. A&A Labels started with a Mark Andy which was bought at drupa 1994. That machine was the second machine in whole of Asia and was airlifted by Saurabh Jain’s father, Mr. Vinay Jain. Saurabh Jain joined the company in 2004 after doing his MBA. His cousin Anubhav Jain joined after three years in 2007. Anubhav looks after all the marketing for A&A Labels while Saurabhtakes care of production, purchase and labour departments. He says that he is enjoying working in the industry. “When I joined, our turnover was around Rs.50 lakhs. I don’t keep very high targets but expect to touch the Rs.100 crores mark in next five years,” he says. This he plans to achieve through capacity expansion over the next couple of years.

“When I joined, we operated from single room. Now the huge premises which was added later is jammed packed with all types of machines and equipment. We would be adding more capacity in a year or two,” reveals Saurabh. The ISO 9001:2008 organisation,A&A Labels, has a modern set-up with a huge lineup of machines led by seven flexo machines. “All machines I have, I prefer to have them in pairs. This way I may be adding another Lombardi soon,” says Saurabh. Post moving to the Gurgaon facility, Saurabh made it a point to work directly for customers rather than traders. His state-of-the-art end-
to-end set-up has enabled him grow with his customers. He has been very choosey about his equipment. “I don’t find any other machine available in the market coming near Lombardi. The value proposition of Lombardi is just matchless. The quality can be compared to any,” he asserts. Saurabh was keen on acquiring a servo flexo machine. “The Lombardi Synchroline is a fully automated 8-colour servo line which can be operated by a single operator,” he says. “The machine can print from 12 micron film to 400 gsm board. It features a Corona Treatment Unit, patented Air Blade System (ABS) and has been equipped with a Diecutting Unit, an overhead adjustable Relamdelam and Cold-foiling attachments,” adds Anubhav. When he met the Lombardi people, he came to know about the machine’s capability to print mono cartons. He was told that the machine can be equipped to print mono cartons. Neither was the existing machine printing mono cartons nor Saurabh had any near plan to print mono cartons. “However, I asked them to equip my machine with the capability to print mono cartons. This way I have acquired a machine which is not only future ready in the label printing field but may even get converted to a carton printing machine with necessary finishing attachments,” he claims. “When we bought our first Mark Andy, nobody knew about the brand India but today majority of flexo printers have worked on a

Mark Andy or have installed one. Today also, it looks the same. Though, industry people are not much informed about Lombardi, I am sure it will be well appreciated by the fraternity soon,” believes Saurabh. He strongly vouches for sound technical knowledge for everybody who is in the Flexo printing business. “Without thorough knowledge about the subject, you can’t make it big in any field. And as far as Flexo Printing is concerned, it is a highly technical field. Since, we had it in our blood, we didn’t face any major technical issue. But for new entrants in the field, sound technical background is a must to start with. Only this way can one make sure one’s investment is safe,” he explains. He also doesn’t believe in working for a single industry. We see this in his catering to diverse customers in different industries. Presently A&A Labels caters to a range of industries which include: FMCG, pharmaceutical, wine & spirits, cosmetics, packaging, home appliances, electronics, airlines, automobiles and many more. Both Saurabh and Anubhav consider quality as their topmost priority. With a separate quality control department to monitor the quality of products and services, A&A Labels is committed towards highest international quality standards starting from raw material right through designing, printing, colour
reproduction, finishing and service. A couple of Vinsak LSR Slitter rewinders were added to ensure good quality finishing of the labels. The quality control systems including 100% defect detection system from BST Sayona are the few steps in this direction. Massimo Lombardi along with his Indian partner Ranesh Bajaj of Vinsak is quite optimistic of picking up pace post this latest installation at A&A labels. Massimo sees the Indian market as having tremendous growth potential. “Indian market is very adaptive
to technology. We strive to bring the most modern technology to our Indian customer. Together we make a perfect team,” declares Massimo. “It’s an affordable machine, a versatile machine that can enable a label manufacturer to not only print on films but mono cartons. It gives the flexibility to bounce between films and labels with finishing options,” concludes RaneshBajaj.

Flying start for Heidelberg and Masterwork With first installations in Europe, the partnership between Heidelberg and Masterwork gets off to successful start.
The strategic partnership between Heidelberg and Chinese manufacturer Masterwork Machinery (MK) in the postpress sector for packaging printing has had a successful start. Heidelberg is using its global sales network to sell die cutters and folder gluers produced by Masterwork and additional machines for packaging production. It is also providing service support. In just six months, over ten machines have been shipped to customers, primarily in Europe, reflecting the partnership’s success. The aim is to continuously increase the volume of business by progressively expanding the product portfolio.
“We’re delighted to be working with Heidelberg and, in so doing, gaining access to markets throughout the world, which we couldn’t have achieved by ourselves,” says Wells Fu, international sales manager at MK.
“By using MK products, we can meet the specific demands of our customers on the packaging market. They need the best machines for their individual requirements so as to ensure efficient and costeffective folding carton production,” explains Harald Weimer, member of the Heidelberg Management Board responsible for global sales. “We offer customers what they need, whether from Heidelberg or a partner. In MK, we’ve found a partner that has impressed us with the quality of its production and innovative research and development. It is a partnership that more than meets our high
expectations.”
Customers look for cost-effective and efficient production More than ten Promatrix 106 CS and Easymatrix 106 CS die cutters have already been sold. Both die cutters offer an excellent price-performance ratio and are aimed at customers with small and medium production volumes. These machines are also highly attractive to customers in the commercial sector. The Promatrix 106 CS has a speed of 8,000 sheets per hour, while the Easymatrix 106 CS runs at 7,700 sheets per hour. The first purchaser of the Promatrix 106 CS was Polish print shop Arka-Druk (link to press release dated April 16, 2015). It has a workforce of 80 employees, who supply customers throughout the country with commercial jobs but also increasingly offer them packaging for foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals. “The Promatrix has proven its worth in our production operations. We’re so satisfied, we purchased a MK 1060 ST hotfoiling machine which has just been installed by a team from MK and Heidelberg. As a result, we can now offer high-finish packaging,” explains owner Artur Bach.
Key Notes : > Heidelberg offers packaging printers expanded portfolio of die cutters and folding carton gluing machines. > Customers benefit from high-quality machines with attractive priceperformance ratio. > Customers have same contacts as before, as Heidelberg provides sales and service.

: The Easymatrix 106 CS die cutter is an entry-level machine for packaging and commercial printers looking to keep the entire value-added chain in-house.
In the UK, the first Promatrix 106 CS was shipped at the end of July to Zenith Print & Packaging, a print shop in Treforest, north of Cardiff, where it will replace two older die cutters. “We expect the new die cutter to deliver much shorter makeready times and greater productivity,” explains Managing Director Ken Bell. The company is also looking to harness the enhanced quality to increase its competitiveness. Zenith is renowned for high-quality packaging for coin collectors and packaging for the gift, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industries. Its 63 employees have already received countless awards, including one for exports, and its products are sold on five continents and in over 60 countries.
Heidelberg Poland has sold not just one but two Easymatrix 106 CS die cutters that will be installed shortly. Piotr Krzych, president of Szczecin-based print shop COMgraph expects top quality and durability from the new die cutter. Half of production by the just under 100 employees is for commercial jobs for the domestic market, while the other half is made up of packaging for export. Economic aspects were the main factor in the investment decision by Drukarnia WL Leszek Wojtczuk. “This is our second die cutter from an Asian manufacturer. We’ve been using the first one for nine years and hope the Easymatrix will be even better,” says owner Leszek Wojtczuk. His company’s
workforce of more than 65 employees mainly produce cosmetic and food packaging,¬ with 85 percent going to customers in Poland and the remainder being exported.
Continuous portfolio expansion The partnership between MK and Heidelberg aims to satisfy the growing demand for innovative machines for postpress in the packaging sector. The right products and technologies, comprehensive service, and a rapid supply of spare parts are key. As well as the Promatrix and Easymatrix, the future will also see MK machines that feature special modules such as offline inspection, hot foil embossing, and blanking. Some of these new machines will be introduced to a wider audience at the upcoming Packaging Days at the Wiesloch-Walldorf site in November. The MK Diana X, MK Diana Smart 55, and MK Diana Smart 80 foldergluers will also be on show. MK has a workforce of over 800 employees in Tianjin (China), including XY employees in research and development, and is the leading die cutter manufacturer in Asia. The global Heidelberg sales team works closely with product management at Masterwork to develop products geared to the varying requirements of industrialized countries and emerging markets. Customers benefit from an extended portfolio and rapid service.
The new MK Diana Smart folding carton gluing machine was also unveiled at the Packaging Days. It is ideal for short to medium runs.

“As it starts the new financial year, Heidelberg is well on the way to achieving its targets for the year,” said CFO and Deputy CEO Dirk Kaliebe. “The restructuring period is over and in the future we’ll be re-focusing our attention on managing our growth,” he added.
The free cash flow after the first quarter of financial year 2015/2016 was euro -35 million (same quarter of previous year: euro -66 million). This was essentially the result of net payments of some euro 8 million to acquire PSG and payments associated with portfolio optimization measures totaling around euro9 million. The net financial debt increased slightly in the quarter under review, to euro 277 million (March 31, 2015: euro 256 million), and thus remains at a low level. This enabled the leverage (net financial debt divided by EBITDA excluding special items for the last four quarters), including payment of the purchase price for PSG, to be kept below the target value of 2.
Thanks to a healthy order backlog, higher servicerelated sales, and exchange rate effects (around euro 40 million), sales in the quarter under review increased to euro 563 million (previous year: euro 435 million). All regions achieved higher sales. As a result of the successful trade show in China, additional service-related business due to the PSG takeover, and exchange rate effects (roughly euro 55 million), incoming orders climbed to euro 703 million (previous year: euro 588 million). The operating result was far better than in the previous year, with EBITDA of euro 46 million (previous year: euro 6 million) and EBIT of euro 28 million (previous year: euro -11 million). Income from the takeover of PSG totaling about euro 19 million had a positive impact on both these figures. Excluding this income and adjusted for sales-related exchange rate effects, the EBITDA margin was around 5 percent. The PSG income compensated for negative special items from subsequent expenditure amounting to some euro 15 million for partial retirement agreements concluded in the previous year. EBIT including special items thus increased significantly, from euro -11 million to euro 13 million. At euro -14 million, the financial result was better than in the same quarter of the previous year (euro -17 million). The net result before taxes (euro -1 million following euro -28 million in the same quarter of the previous year) and the net result after taxes (euro -4
Equity at the end of the quarter, on June 30, increased to euro 337 million (March 31, 2015: euro 183 million). This corresponds to an equity ratio of around 15 percent (March 31, 2015: 8 percent). The main reason for this improvement was the significant increase in the discount rate for pensions in Germany – from 1.7 percent in the previous year to 2.7 percent on the balance sheet date.
Following the issue of a convertible bond and a
pressideas/ commercial printing
corporate bond, a further step to ensure long-term financing of the corporate strategy was completed in July 2015 when the early extension of the revolving credit facility with a future volume of euro 250 million to the end of June 2019 was agreed with a consortium of banks and formed the third mainstay of the financing framework. “Our optimized financing framework provides a solid foundation for further strategic reorientation and the planned growth of the company,” said Kaliebe. As at June 30, 2015, the Heidelberg Group had a global workforce of 11,865, including the 384 new PSG staff, plus 426 trainees (previous year: 12,454 plus 493 trainees).
Outlook: Well on way to achieving targets for year Boosted by healthy order books, Heidelberg is aiming for sales growth of 2 to 4 percent after adjustment for exchange rate effects in the current financial year 2015/2016. As in the previous year, the company is assuming that sales will be higher in the second half of the financial year than in the first. Provided the initiatives to improve the margin and optimize the portfolio have the planned impact in the current financial year, the company expects to be able to achieve an operating margin based on EBITDA of
at least 8 percent of sales – now adjusted for exchange rate movements – in financial year 2015/2016. The Heidelberg Equipment segment should help achieve this with a margin of between 4 and 6 percent and the Heidelberg Services segment with a margin of between 9 and 11 percent. In the Heidelberg Financial Services segment, customer financing is still primarily outsourced. This segment should make a positive contribution to EBITDA in the future, too. The figures for the second quarter of financial year 2015/2016 are due to be published on November 13, 2015.
ACIMGA reshapes its association structure and proposes its “networking strategy” version 2.0 From the development of its own exhibitions – Converflex and Grafitalia – to the leadership of the Business Community of the sector. The second phase is under way: an open approach, internationalisation, social networks and supply chain events to share the know-how. A new launch and a further growth of the sector’s trade shows, a promotional strategy common to the entire business community, supply chain marketing, and a 360-degree communication programme with an organised presence on the major social networks. ACIMGA plays its aces and starts phase 2 of its reorganisation plan. Marco Calcagni is now entering his second year as the President of the Italian Manufacturers Association of Machinery for the Graphic, Converting and Paper Industry, member of Confindustria, and is accelerating this transformation process. A new, future-looking way of managing an association, with the new challenges in mind. An open approach, internationalisation, awareness that growth can take place and be fostered only if the boundaries of individualism are crossed and solutions and know-how are shared. These considerations highlight the importance of the recent transfer of IpackIma to Fiera Milano: a highly strategic choice, which provides new resources and energies that will give a further boost to first-rate trade shows such as Converflex, Grafitalia and
UPAK Italia, currently under the management of ACIMGA’s operations company, Centrexpo Spa. The diversification strategy adopted by ACIMGA in the past 15 years through IpackIma was of the utmost importance. Thanks to it, the association had access to the vast and global perspectives of package printing and gained a closer synergy with the packaging sector. All this took place in a crucial moment for the traditional printing sectors, weakened by the overwhelming introduction of digital technologies, then struck by the very quick evolution of paper-free communication technologies. ACIMGA, with its trade shows and its steadily developing network of international and communication relations, can now help with greater efficacy its member companies make their way into world markets. “The challenge we are facing is of great consequence – says Andrea Briganti, General Manager of ACIMGA -. Our Association is changing from the representation office of an industrial sector into the Business Community of the Package Printing and Converting world. We have been able to increase the number of member companies by 40% in the space of a year; now we have introduced the role of the partner, that can be played by all companies that can provide our members with services aimed at business management”. The idea of the creation of a supply network is thus taking shape, strengthening the central
role of the business community, thanks to a further evolution: from the organisation of promotional events according to traditional standards to the new “content transfer event” format, where skills and products are shared among all actors of the Package Printing and Converting Business Community, with their various roles and responsibilities. These efforts are sustained by an intense communication activity, ranging from the traditional channels to the new social networks, in synergy with and in support of the information and know-how sharing strategy started at organisational level. “The reorganisation process of our association is now in its second phase, which consists in a series of coordinated and synergistic actions that represent an important stage in ACIMGA’s growth – underlines its President, Marco Calcagni -. To concentrate on our key exhibitions, Converflex and Grafitalia, is the basic condition to guarantee far-reaching results, strategic alliances and new international prospects in order to promote the activities we are directly involved in”.

Sivakasi’s Kaliswari blazes a trail Installs India’s first-ever Heidelberg Speedmaster CS 92 In a trend-setting move, Sivakasi-based Kaliswari Group added the Heidelberg Speedmaster CS 92 four-colour press to its in-house printing division. With this installation, the global Fireworks exporter earns the accolade of buying the first-ever Heidelberg Speedmaster CS 92 in the country. The Kaliswari group manufactures and sells fireworks under the well-established and reputed “Cock” brand. Pyrotechnics is the key business, but the 92-year old Kaliswari group also operates in other diverse verticals, such as educational institutions, transportation and hotels. An in-house printing division caters to the commercial and packaging needs of the Group’s own Fireworks and other businesses. A.P. Selvarajan, the Director of Kaliswari Group is clearly excited about his latest investment. “We are more than happy to invest in the first Speedmaster CS 92 press in India. The format and production speeds of the CS92 score an A+, but the wow factor is the assured savings in plate and paper costs.” Launched in the ‘Print China’ exhibition in April 2015, the Speedmaster CS 92 was specially targeted at the Asian printing
fraternity. A.P. Selvarajan impressed by the technical advantages that the Speedmaster CS92 had to offer, after watching a demo at ‘Print China’. He signed up for the press in the very next month. The installation is currently in the works and the press is expected to be operational by this month-end. The Speedmaster CS 92, a size 37- format press, has a production speed of 15,000 sheets per hour. It can handle substrates with thickness ranging from 0.03 mm – 0.6 mm (0.0012 in – 0.024 in). Printing plate costs are almost 20% lower with the CS92, a key competitive advantage in a fiercely contested market. The unique format class caters to about 90% of commercial print products. Alongside the classic 16-page A4 format, the Speedmaster CS 92 also promotes the use of additional imposition layouts – Nine A4 repeats or 6-page products in three rows of repeats. Ganesh Kumar, Senior Sales Manager, Heidelberg India for Sivakasi region states, “The Speedmaster CS 92 is based on the extremely successful press format –

In addition, the press can be converted for UV operation as well.” Although the in-house printing unit was founded as an offshoot of the Fireworks division, it is well endowed with state-of-theart pre-press facilities such as multicolour offset presses and flexo printing presses, while the Postpress portfolio features Polar cutters, die-cutters and folder gluers. Indeed, the journey has been eventful and sizzling for the Kaliswari Group that was established in 1923 as a Match factory. The company exploded into prominence and growth, after expanding into Fireworks. Today, the company controls over 30 factories and has an employee count exceeding 9,000. On a concluding note, A.P. Selvarajan states, “The Speedmaster CS92 will be a value and proud addition in our 9 decade journey. We hope to accomplish a lot with this latest wonder from Heidelberg.”

Largest ever order for Q.I. Press Controls Q.I. Press Controls has received the largest ever order in its history from Newsprinters UK for its printing sites in Broxbourne and Eurocentral. Newsprinters comprises three divisions: Broxbourne, Knowsley and Eurocentral. Of these, Broxbourne is the largest and is responsible for printing some of the UK’s major national dailies, such as The Times and The Daily Telegraph. Broxbourne’s plant consists of 60 towers and Eurocentral’s 12. Newsprinters recently announced all these towers are equipped with Q.I. Press Controls’ IDS-3D The collaboration with Newsprinters dates back to 2010, when a test system was installed on 5 towers at Broxbourne. Trials continued at the Eurocentral site near Glasgow, which enabled Newsprinters to prove the benefits of the system. In October 2014, Newsprinters has given Q.I. Press Controls the go-ahead to fit Broxbourne and Eurocentral with the system. Management is satisfied with the partnership with Q.I. Press Controls and believes that use of the innovative IDS-3D, in combination with fountain-water control and Automatic Ink Mist Shields (AIMS), provides optimum repeatable quality and labour savings, resulting in much more efficient presses. Steve Whitehead, managing director of Newsprinters UK, has faith in the system of Q.I. Press Controls: “Following a detailed evaluation over a period of three years we have determined that the system of Q.I. Press Controls is able to reliably fulfil our criteria for an automatic density control system. That is accurate colour control, automatically optimising dampening control, printing fault detection with a management information system to record quality. These systems provide a significant condition monitoring capability at a capital and operating cost that can provide a reasonable return on investment.” The total surface area of the plant is 16 hectares (40 acres) which equates to around 23 Wembley football pitches. The workfloor in the Broxbourne printing plant occupies around 87,000 square metres. This accommodates 12 triple-wide manroland Colorman XXL press lines with 60 full-colour towers. The printing presses have the capacity to produce one million 120-page issues of a newspaper per hour.

Not only will acquisition of the IDS-3D result in a reduction in production and maintenance costs, but also mark the continuation of a stable working relationship between Q.I. Press Controls and Newsprinters, which has the ambition to become the best newspaper printing plant in the world. Steve Whitehead: “Q.I. Press Controls have remained a responsive and diligent partner throughout the long evaluation process.” Newsprinters is investing in its future by buying in the best quality. By teaming up with Q.I. Press Controls, Newsprinters is putting itself in a position to deliver the best possible service by supplying top quality products to its clients well into the future. Menno Jansen, managing director of Q.I. Press Controls is enthusiastic about this new milestone: “We’re extremely happy to have received this prestigious order for the installation of 134 IDS-3D cameras for Newprinters in its plants at Eurocentral and Broxbourne. After the successful installation at News Ltd. in Brisbane and Sydney in Australia, this order represents another important landmark in the history of Q.I. Press Controls. The innovative strength of our organisation has brought about two new solutions, such as AIMS, which is installed in front of the camera so that there is no longer any need for lens cleaning. We will continue to harness this innovative strength in our collaboration with Newsprinters in order to develop new ideas which will help bring about further automation and improvement of the printing process.” Newsprinters will continue its partnership with Q.I. Press Controls in the future and wonders about the collaboration between Q.I. Press Controls and EAE. Newsprinters technical director, Mark Ellington said: “We will continue our partnership with QI in the future to improve the IDS-3D system, in particular, to develop the management information system into a valuable condition monitoring tool. We will also be watching with interest how Q.I. Press Controls and EAE collaborate to develop their press control systems.”

Just a few days after the contract was signed, Content-X experts from both ppi Media and Digital collections met to draw up the necessary system specifications with the project managers and users at The Oklahoman. To the delight of everyone involved, the spec was completed and the editorial system was installed and configured in record time. “In that first week we identified and blueprinted workflows and went on to configure a large part of the CMS. We had AP wire and photos flowing in and could produce stories and design whole pages … which we imaged all the way to plate.” said Jay Spear, Director of Emerging Technology at The Oklahoman Media Company.
Designing a layout in a flash Content-X stands out not only as a comparatively low-cost editorial solution, but is also particularly user-friendly and multifunctional. Content-X combines the functions from the Digital Asset Management system DC-X which the editors at The Oklahoman enter texts and photos into with the layout functions from Adobe’s InDesign and the InDesign Server. InDesign is used to design the graphic layout of the daily
newspaper. It is highly integrated, allowing layout editors to track the progress of their editorial work in real time. So, Content-X lets editors and layout artists work on the article simultaneously. This has been made possible using plugins developed by ppi Media. “Content-X enables us to work efficiently. Because it is linked to InDesign, we can work with layout templates, and powerful automation through InDesign saving time and costs,” says Jay Spear, explaining the benefits of Content-X. After installing the remaining modules, templates and systems and following successful trainer and admin training, the daily newspaper went live with Content-X in June 2015. The Oklahoman has been a customer of ppi’s since 2005 and uses the software solutions PlanPag, AdPag, ProPag, AdMan and the output management system OM.

KBA-Digital & Web at the World Publishing Expo 2015 in Hamburg Future-oriented solutions for printed newspapers Innovative solutions to facilitate the cost-effective production of high-quality newspapers, magazines and supplements, future-oriented business models built around digital newspaper printing, press upgrades to enable sales-boosting finishing options and new advertising formats for the printed newspaper, and service offers geared to maintaining the value of older press installations are the central topics addressed by KBA-Digital & Web Solutions AG & Co. KG at this year’s World Publishing Expo in Hamburg (Hall 4, Stand 330). The recently formed business unit KBA-Digital & Web Solutions is the product house responsible for webfed digital and offset print – and thus also for the newspaper market – within the Koenig & Bauer group (KBA). Despite the fact that a number of newspaper publishers have invested in inkjet systems over the past months, the offset process continues to dominate new investment activity in this segment of the market. With Aschendorff in Münster and Oppermann in Rodenberg, for example, two more German media companies have opted for the extremely flexible configuration and automation options of the KBA Commander CL in 2015. As an alternative to analogue offset printing, the KBA portfolio has already included the RotaJET family of high-volume

digital web presses for a number of years. Engineered to satisfy specific needs of the publishing industry, the new RotaJET L for web widths from 89 to 130 cm now further expands the existing capabilities. KBA has supplied impressive proof of the suitability of digital inkjet printing for hyperlocal and narrowly targeted short runs, personalised inserts and special event- and readeroriented marketing products in cooperation with newspaper publishing partners. The branch is gradually recognising the publishing potential of digital print, but is still hesitant to invest in print due to the economically still unconvincing focus on online channels. Given the general reluctance to commit to new investments, retrofits and upgrades for existing presses have gained enormously in
importance. Representatives of the KBA web service department and PrintHouseService GmbH (PHS) will be in Hamburg to present examples of their increasingly soughtafter services, ranging from preventive maintenance, via complete press overhauls and relocations, to the retrofitting of product finishing modules to both KBA and thirdparty presses. A number of innovations, such as service data glasses or the software tool “Process Analyzer” will be presented at the Media Port “Newspaper” on 6th October. KBA will be providing further information at the WPE press conference to be held in the “Prag” conference room on the second floor of the Hamburg Exhibition Centre at 2 p.m. on 5th October.
The KBA Commander CL, with its flexible options for the retrofitting of further automation modules, accounts for the most new press installations in Europe

Goss reveals top results from new technology at Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Since completion last year of the installation of the first triple-wide Goss Uniliner press in the USA, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (“PG”) is on its way to achieving key business and performance criteria stated at project outset. Increased advertiser activity as well as readers’ response indicate the success of investment in new production capabilities and wide-scale redesign. According to Lisa Hurm, director of operations with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, it has been hard not to be thrilled: “The printed edition looks fabulous, with brilliant colour on every page; every nuance of the artwork is brought out. We’ve had really great customer feedback in this respect and our advertisers have been more than happy with the opportunities now available to them.” The technical competencies of the fourtower press have seen a new lease of life for classified sections, obituaries and comics, says Hurm, while there are encouraging signs in other areas too: “We used to outsource our TV guides, as well as sections, wraps and jackets, but these have all come in-house now. Once we felt fully confident of this quality of work, we started doing some commercial work for outside parties. These were mostly brochures on thicker, bright white paper for some local conventions as well as for a number car dealers among others. They have been received very well.” Alongside development of its electronic publication and other digital functionality of the PG brand, the decision in 2013 to invest in a new print production facility reflected

the company’s commitment to the printed word. It required an investment in technology that could deliver the very latest capabilities for value-added print featuring a high level of automation, high-speed and productivity, as well as flexibility for as-yet unknown demands. The lengthy consultation period that followed involved all the key equipment and systems suppliers to the newspaper industry. “Goss had a very good understanding of what we needed and, in true partnership, responded well to our requirements,” explains Hurm. “The speed of the press and its quality of design were crucial.” The press line comprises four four-high printing towers with a 21-inch (533 mm) cut-off, four reelstands and a double-couple J2:5:5 jaw folder. Reelstands are positioned in the ‘T90’ configuration, that is, at right angles to the press line, providing easy access for press crew. For maximum productivity the printing units are capable of up to 80,000 full-color copies per hour in straight production (48 broadsheet pages) or 40,000 copies per hour for collect production (96 pages of full color). These output speeds are enhanced by makeready advantages including motorized pre-set ink keys, spray bar dampening, register system, automated folder settings and shaftless press drives. For flexibility, a wide range of equipment specifications increase the production options. PG specified a maximum web width
of 66 inches (1680 mm), equivalent to six pages across of 11 inches per page. Added to this, the company chose to include a secondary web width of 30 inches (762 mm) for running 15-inch tabloids. This format runs to the lower former assembly of the jaw folder, which is equipped for up to four webs or 12 ribbons. In addition, the jaw folder includes a balloon former assembly, also equipped for up to 12 ribbons and with a center former capable of running both 11-inch and 15-inch pages. For ultimate versatility in operation, the folder features a single push-button fold changeover for switching between straight and collect production. Mike D’Angelo, managing director of Goss Americas, believes the state-of-the-art installation is ideal for the Pittsburgh PostGazette in terms of both current production requirements and long-term aspirations. “PG epitomizes a 21st century newspaper at the top of its game, encompassing both modern news journalism and traditional interests and preferences. It addresses the new world of digital and mobile connectivity while maintaining a thriving community of readers and contributors - with print very much at the heart of things. The flexibility of this Uniliner configuration means that PG can continue to innovate and adapt according to advertiser demand, while its proven print quality and productivity will ensure ongoing high standards that will maintain the printed edition at the pinnacle of the PG brand offering.” With a history dating back to 1786 the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, under a range of titles and ownership, has been reflecting and leading thought in Pennsylvania for well over 200 years. Through some of the most significant developments, since first publishing the Constitution of the United States in 1787, the paper has provided daily updates on local, national and world events. Today, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is Western Pennsylvania’s largest newspaper with a daily printed circulation of around 140,000 rising to more than 270,000 copies on Sunday. As the region’s most visited news website, post-gazette.com complements the printed edition, together reaching nearly one million people each week.

KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology creates a more flexible business model for the newspaper industry Kodak and Guiton Group have announced the birth of KP Services (Jersey), a collaboration between Kodak and Guiton Group, which also owns the Jersey Evening Post. KP Services (Jersey) will print the Jersey Evening Post as well as the majority of U.K. national newspapers (11 titles in total) for distribution in Jersey and Guernsey. It is estimated that KP Services (Jersey) will print approximately 35,000 newspapers in total each day(made up of the combined circulations required for each separate publication). The new service will bring a number of benefits to Guernsey and Jersey and, in particular, will overcome the challenges of reliable delivery by avoiding the frequent weather delays associated with flying newspapers into islands on the day of publication. KP Services (Jersey) will open for business in 2016. Kodak will install two KODAK PROSPER 6000P Presses and four of the newlylaunched Hunkeler Combi-Solution Newspaper finishing lines. The KODAK PROSPER 6000 Presses are powered by an advanced Intelligent Print System (IPS) that continuously monitors, evaluates and adjusts operations to ensure exceptional quality output. With the improved IPS, the KODAK PROSPER 6000 Presses can monitor and instantly correct colour registration, delivering enhanced registration performance. The KODAK PROSPER 6000P Press was designed specifically for publishing applications such as newspapers and books. The KODAK PROSPER 6000 Presses print
at speeds of up to 1,000 feet (or 300 meters) per minute on standard newsprint paper delivering close to 3,000 newspapers every hour*. They are ideally suited for print sites that have to print a large number of lowvolume titles. The innovative concept underlying Hunkeler‘s latest newspaper finishing line allows for fully-automated changeover between Tabloid and Broadsheet formats as well as the automated collation of multiple sections. Every newpsaper going through the folding and collating sub-system can have a different number of pages with a maximum page count of 140 Tabloid pages per newspaper. “In today’s printing environment, businesses need to invest in technologies that complement long-established production methods, yet also enable them to drive newspaper printing into the future,” said Jack Knadjian, Managing Director, KP Services (Jersey). “Kodak has pioneered inkjet printing for newspapers and is ready to show the world the next generation of inkjet presses with the speed and quality provided by KODAK Stream Inkjet Technology. It would not have been possible to print so many titles with such a diversity of print runs (less than 300 to more than 15,000) and some with very high page counts using offset technology. Through KP Services (Jersey) Limited, we will now be able to demonstrate the value of KODAK PROSPER6000 Presses to our customers around the world.” “This is a welcome investment into the Jersey economy by such a prestigious global company. The partnership between Kodak UK and the Guiton Group will see the very
latest digital printing technology coming to the island, new jobs created and new skills being learned,” said Senator Lyndon Farnham, Jersey’s Minister for Economic Development. “The Jersey operation will be a worldwide showcase for the digital printing of newspapers and we are delighted to see such innovation and investment brought to the island.” “After 125 years of consistently printing our own titles, it is fair to say that any thirdparty solution needed to be technologically superior for us to consider moving from self-sufficiency to this type of partnership,“ said Paul Carter, Managing Director, Guiton Publishing and the Jersey Evening Post. “We’ve been watching digital development for over a decade and always held back due to the speed and reliability issues that this technology struggled with previously. We are confident that adding the KODAK PROSPER 6000 Presses, combined with the Hunkeler finishing equipment and our own expertise in publishing and distribution, makes this the right time to move forward. In the year when we celebrate our 125th anniversary, it is satisfying to invest in future-proofing our business in this way.”

Today an ELF – Tomorrow a Label Industry Giant New FINAT European Label Forum reflects the growing role of labels
Replacing the long-established annual FINAT congress and held in Amsterdam from 11-13 June, the FINAT European Label Forum represented all stages of the complex label value chain and placed a strong emphasis on business concerns – particularly running a profitable business in today’s economic environment. It covered a variety of disciplines, from branding and marketing to innovation, technology, manufacturing, and corporate affairs.
Fast-paced change in the label production market prompted the creation of the new FINAT European Label Forum, which attracted more than 300 participants from Europe and beyond.
“The definition and role of labels has changed dramatically in recent years with the advent of new product decoration technologies, from sleeves and in-mould labels to printed electronics,” explains Jules Lejeune, Managing Director of FINAT. “With a customer base of brand owners and retailers that is increasingly international, and a world of consumers who are social and online media experts, this is indeed a challenging scenario for label converters. And with the task of achieving change firmly placed on label converters, Europe’s industry association, FINAT, has both the desire and the duty to create a new informational and educational platform for its members.” Lejeune reported that labelstock consumption in 2014 was up 5.7% year-on-year and the industry saw ‘steady and strong recovery’ since 2012 and the

He also introduced the members-only FINAT RADAR that tracks European converter, brand owner and material supplier trends; developments in conventional vs. digital press purchases; and provides a regular half-yearly benchmarking report on these topics. The most recent FINAT RADAR converter survey found that 40% of Europe’s self-adhesive label converters are already active in printing sleeve labels, with at least 20% embracing sleeves, flexible packaging, and/or in-mould labelling. President emeritus of the European Council, Herman van Rompuy, presented on the future of business in a complex European landscape. He stated, “Interdependence is the key to a successful European Union, and to addressing many of the opportunities and challenges that face Europe as a whole, the euro itself, and the current economic situation within the Eurozone.”

He encouraged delegates to ‘think outside in’ because ‘success is not a straight line,’ and highlighted business case studies that illustrated both winners and losers, emphasising that ‘good results always come from good decisions,’ ‘performance equals potential minus interference,’ and ‘what you see is not necessarily what you get.’ Heineken senior packaging and identity design manager Ramses Dingenouts showed how a family business founded in 1860 has innovated to achieve continued success. He stated, “Pressure-sensitive labels make packaging multi-versioning possible, and that is now a core company strategy.” The relationship between suppliers and their strategic customers was addressed by Gordon Crichton, director of the Institut du Management de l’Achat International in
The forum featured three in-depth parallel tracks on different business topics – sales, marketing and PR; technology and manufacturing; and management and corporate. Cindy Van Cauter, owner of the Netherlands-based shopper and trend research company Quotus Research, took the delegates on a shopping trip around the future, evaluating the new reality for labels in the new reality of retailing. As the focus of the consumer moves away from the supermarket aisles into the world of e-tailing, the role of labels is changing, she explained. QR codes and other scannable features are part of daily life; and for young people, there is a ‘blurring of offline and online.’ Lars Wallentin, a well-known veteran in brand packaging and the creator of the Packaging Sense platform discussed raising awareness of the importance of packaging – and the label – as a communications medium. He pointed out that ‘packaging is advertising – it’s talking to people!’
More label technology choices today FINAT’s New Converting Technology Taskforce fielded two speakers on technology and manufacturing. Constantia Flexibles’ VP, marketing, and current chair of TLMI, Dan Muenzer, detailed developments in product decoration technologies that compete with mainstream self-adhesive labelling, including linerless labels, flexible packaging, refillable pouches, sleeving of all kinds, direct print, pre-glued wraps, cans, in-mould labels, personalisation, NFC, and printed electronics, as well as container developments such as paper bottles, and the many different recycling options available today. Onno Ponfoort of global management and business consultants Berenschot spoke about the impact of 3D printing, or additive manufacturing. “Personalisation, small runs and on demand production are important
features of 3D printing’s value proposition, but as I understand it, these are also unique selling points for self-adhesive label solutions,” he observed. “For this reason, the business models of the 3D printing ecosystem could also offer your industry some interesting perspectives.”
Succession planning in family businesses Management and corporate topics were selected by FINAT’s very active Young Managers Club –Jozef Lievens, a partner in Belgian corporate law firm Eubelius, addressed five essential questions about family business succession, while Nick Mockett, a partner in corporate finance and M&A consultancy Moorgate Capital, spoke about selling the business if succession is not possible or desirable. Delegates also participated in a handson lean manufacturing workshop led by Jan Mekers, owner of lean and change management consultants Richter IMA, and the event also included a supplier tabletop exhibition as well as the 2015 FINAT Label Competition and Recycling Awards.
The voice of the customer The event received plaudits from attendees including Chris Ellison of OPM (Labels & Packaging) Group Ltd, who described it as “a must-attend event for entrepreneurs in the narrow-web industry”. Gavin Rittmeyer, Martin Automatic Inc, commented, ”a stellar line-up of speakers and networking opportunities”. And Filip Weymans of Xeikon described it as “a great milestone in the year”. Klaus Damberg of Synthogra, added, “The entire programme was very relevant for all converters,” and Ramon Lee, Brotech Graphics Co, Ltd said: “I got a lot of new information…most importantly, on developments – on the marketing side and the technology side, and on management skills.” Lejeune concludes, “This event delivered on its promise to provide an expert and wide-ranging business briefing targeted at profitability and business growth. A changing end-use market profile, evolutions in print technology and access to a number of new product decoration techniques can, and will, co-exist with self-adhesive labelstocks in the label converter’s printroom.”

CGS Case Study: PICA Digital Pte Ltd CGS Celebrates 200th Installation Milestone with PICA
In early 2015, PICA Digital Pte Ltd installed the CGS ORIS Proofing solution consisting of the ORIS Flex Pack // Web and Roland VersaCAMM VS-300i printer. This successful implementation in Singapore is cause for celebration for CGS, as it marks the 200th installation of ORIS solutions worldwide. “We have come a long way in the short time that we have. Installing the 200th CGS ORIS solutions system is testament to the global recognition we have achieved among the industry,” said Christoph Thommessen, sales director for Asia Pacific, CGS Publishing Technologies International.
“In the short amount of time since we’ve installed the ORIS solution, our customers have been very receptive to it. We’ve experienced better all-round lead times and customer satisfaction.” - Thomas Ling, MD, PICA Digital

“We’re proud and excited to have PICA reach this milestone with us. We look forward to this growing partnership as we continue to be there for PICA in their journey from offset to digital,” added Thommessen. For PICA, the installation has reaped benefits that were almost instantaneous: “In the short amount of time since we’ve installed the ORIS solution, our customers have been very receptive to it, according to our sales figures. We’ve experienced better all-
round lead times and customer satisfaction,” said Thomas Ling, managing director, PICA Digital Pte Ltd.
Staying ahead with CGS ORIS solutions Established since 1977, PICA has its beginnings as a traditional colour separation outfit, exporting many of its work to Europe, Australia and the US. Today, the Singapore-based company found its niche in producing packaging mockups for branding agencies. “These companies need visual representation after their redesign and see how the product is like before they go to actual production. We use traditional wet proofing to do the mockup, but we find it increasingly difficult to maintain standards and consistency,” said Ling. Singapore holds one of the highest concentrations of branding agencies in Southeast Asia, many of which manages the branding and re-branding of consumable goods used all over the world. As the industry shifts from analog to digital, PICA has had to evolve along with it.

“After installing the ORIS solution, we don’t have that issue anymore, as every reproduction is true to file and consistent. By going digital, we’re now able to follow Fogra and ISO standards, which we previously could not achieve with our conventional machines. Adhering to the international standards has made our operations significantly easier, and we found this with the ORIS solution,” Ling continued. “The speed and accuracy of the proofs set ORIS apart from other options we looked at,” continued Ling, on his decision process. “Our customer’s demands are very precise, so we have to find specific solutions for them; it’s not a one-size-fits-all sort of industry. We looked into digital initially because we have to adapt very quickly in order to remain competitive.” The ORIS Flex Pack // Web software provides uniquely web-based hard copy and soft proofing in one package. The software is powered by CGS’ patented four-dimensional iterative color management software. When combined with a specially designed custom interface for Roland VersaCAMM VS series printers, the system is able to give users the flexibility for halftone and continuous tone proofing for packaging and mock-up reproduction.

Meet international colour proofing standards in packaging mock-ups and maintain colour consistency. Improve colour management and client expectation management processes to retain and grow key accounts and keep processes aligned with best practice standards.
Since installing the ORIS system, PICA has even managed to generate new accounts: “A Japanese company approached us to do a packaging proof upon hearing we have the ORIS solution installed. I think that itself speaks volumes of the capabilities of the system. “
Being Fogra – and ISO-certified, the ORIS system is able to recognise PICA’s requirements for competitive differentiation in the world of colour management. At the moment, PICA’s current workload stands at 80% offset and 20% digital. PICA is expecting an increased shift of its accounts to the new digital solution, thanks to the strong colour proposition that the Fogra and ISO certification provided.
Overcoming the consistency challenge
Saving time and money with reliable colour management
“Printing is no longer like the old days! We can no longer rely on the ‘good of the eye’ craftsmanship. These days there’s a science to it and everything needs to be measurable,” quipped Ling.
A winning feature of the ORIS Flex Pack // Web system is in the handling of customers’ spot and Pantone colours that are centrally kept in a colour management library. This feature has allowed PICA to save time, and ultimately money.
Before installing the ORIS solutions, consistency was a major issue for PICA. It became even more challenging when it came down proof revisions. “Sometimes a customer requires very minor revision from the first proof, perhaps just a 3% tweaking of the file. When you print it just slightly darker from the first proof, the 3% will get completely wiped out,” explained Ling.
“In fact, we’ve ever spent two days, just mixing inks alone trying to proof it to standard. We ended up having to send it off that way and we lose money eventually too. We schedule the job for six hours, and end up having two persons, on two machines, clocking 12 hours total. With digital, there is none of such problems,” said Ling.
“With our offset machines, we require at least a day or two to produce the mockups. If we’re printing on material that is not paper, offset inks need even longer drying times. If we’re using six colours, we’re talking about 1.5 days in terms of operator shifts,” said Ling.

formulated for proofing applications. Light inks have been replaced with orange and green, to completely redefine the CMYK set. As a result, the printable colour space is significantly larger and achievable colour gamut expanded, making spot colour accuracy easy. “The typical ink set is not enough to cover most of the spot colours in the packaging world. The ink set will cover 90% of the PANTONE library, but in packaging, you need that last 10%. The Roland machine with the ORIS solution runs with orange and green inks, instead of light magenta and light cyan. This effectively expands the colour gamut,” said Ling. “That is what the CGS ORIS solution is all about; we’re not just software development. We cover the whole spectrum for our customers, from the machine, the ink, to the consumables, in order to streamline digital processes for our customers,” Thommessen concluded.

Lifestyle muesli on the breakfast table with 3D printing Label manufacturing industry’s largest 3-day extravaganza has a successful show in Pink City. First presented at the Packaging Inspiration Forum in Hamburg, the existing samples have now been expanded to include a tray produced by 3D printing. The latest PrintCity Alliance project illustrates every aspect of a food packaging on the basis of an intelligent system solution for cereals: food safety and protective mechanisms, handling, branding, finishing and production. As a result, all the participants in the value chain are equally addressed: brandowners, agencies and designers, printers and converters.
Visualisation and rapid prototyping 3D printing is ideally suited not only to visualising complete concepts in their entirety on a monitor, but also to turning them into “hands-on” reality. “We’ve only just begun to sound out the possibilities this technology offers in packaging development,” says Alexander Dort, Head Designer of the PrintCity Alliance. “But even this first example demonstrates the enormous potential. The folding cartons only develop their full impact in conjunction with the tray, and the interplay of packaging and tray can already be optimised during the design phase and fine-tuned for subsequent industrial production.”
Multisensory approach and packaging concept Different kinds of finishing were skilfully combined in production. This deliberately high degree of finishing shows how the intrinsic value of a product presentation can be enhanced by upgrading the product packaging, thus making it possible to attract greater attention at the POS. Cost-efficient production ensures suitability for the mass market and increases profitability.
Lifestyle product The simplicity of everyday handling and the multisensory approach, i.e. the addressing of several senses, increase the value of the product in the consumer’s eyes: • No inner bag; glued-in paper strips as

The first five folding cartons – of different size, content and design – were produced on an offset press at the AR Packaging Group. As with all Alliance projects, all the production parameters and the experience gained are summarised in a Tutorial.
The Airbox from the AR Packaging Group The Airbox is a primary packaging solution for fine and pulverised products. The critical areas at the top and bottom of the folding carton are sealed on the inside by means of accurately positioned paper strips. This makes the carton trickle-proof without an additional inner bag – and thus ideal for loose products, such as sugar, muesli, cereals and flakes. In combination with various barrier coatings on the carton and the paper strips, the result is very high tightness values and good product safety. Only lowmigration inks and coatings are used that comply with the latest European and Swiss laws and targets relating to food safety.
Further highlights: • •
Direct filling as an alternative to bag-inbox applications Pre-glued paper strips permit safe filling on vertical end-load cartoners
Only minor modifications required for use on most vertical filling lines Dust- and trickle-proof primary packaging Reliable product protection for very small particles (> 120 µm)
This solution is already being used for sugar and cocoa products.

Label Kingdom installs Esko’s packaging software and Kongsberg V20 at Chennai facility Esko solutions to improve efficiency by avoiding errors by identifying them at an early stage and also to reduce wastage through efficient sample making. Label Kingdom clearly considers Esko as the leading design and prepress solution provider for packaging printing and production. This is why they chose Esko’s software and also purchased the Esko Kongsberg V20 sample making table for cutting and creasing packaging prototypes. Mr. KV Prasad CEO of Label Kingdom says, “We strongly believe that Esko’s solutions will help us produce high quality jobs and also improve our efficiency by identifying errors at a very early stage and avoid them as we design the packaging. This is because the tools which are part of the Esko solution follow standards prescribed by international bodies like ECMA. Also the tools help to complete the design activity at a faster rate than the usually used tools such as Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw.” “Another area where Esko Solutions helps us is in sample making. We usually receive files from customers for packaging printing. When we handle such jobs we encounter problems both in the design and at the finishing stage. This is a big headache that we face since it leads to lots of wastage in terms of material and press time in the printing stage. Sometimes it even leads to rejection of completed jobs from the customer. So it is always wise to make a complete sample of the customer file before we take it to final production. Once we have the sample made from the actual board that we need to print, then we can understand all the problem areas of the design and correct these before we can take the job for production. This process helps us to avoid errors thereby helping to reduce wastages. As a result our production efficiency also increases,” Prasad says. Label Kingdom in Chennai started off with screen printing and then migrated to offset printing for both commercial and packaging work. The company now focuses on packaging – folding cartons, rigid boxes and corrugated shipping cartons. Label Kingdom is a specialist in the garment segment and supplies packaging materials to most of the global brands in the garment and leather

products industry in South India. Today Label Kingdom’s customers are well aware of the Esko solutions. Making samples before a carton is printed is critical. Also, when customers come for new customized designs, Label Kingdom can suggest innovative solutions using the Esko software tools and sample making machine. KV Prasad says, “Esko’s solutions are helping us to make designs that are efficiently producible in large quantities. With this solution we can also make different designs and give the customer options for them to choose from. This helps us to increase customer satisfaction and also retain them in these competitive times.” “Our belief is that packaging in India is on a
growth path. We look forward to experience the benefits of growth through the adoption of modern technologies and solutions such as the ones we use from Esko,” Prasad concludes. Srihari Rao Director Sales for Esko India says, “Converters today know the advantages of using Esko’s efficient software tools for prepress and the Esko Kongsberg sample making table. They are using them for building quality and bringing about efficiency into their processes from the very first day and avoiding errors in the entire production flow. As the industry matures, Esko is well positioned with software, hardware, services and know how to support the demand for tools that can offer cuttingedge creativity and innovation.”

WACKER presents new high-performance release agents for PSA labels “Let’s make the perfect combination” is the motto under which the Munich-based chemical company WACKER is showcasing highly efficient coating compounds for the paper and film coating industry at Labelexpo Europe 2015. The focus is on four new silicone polymers for industrial label applications. They are solvent-free and cure extremely quickly, which is why they are ideal for cost-effective release coatings. The products belong to the new DEHESIVE® SFX product family, which will be presented to a wide professional audience for the first time at the Labelexpo. The tradeshow takes place in Brussels, Belgium, from September 29 to October 2. The new products are solvent-free and cure by a platinum-catalyzed addition reaction. Due to their high reactivity, the silicone polymers require very little catalyst to cure fully. Compared to conventional coating systems, platinum savings of up to 60 percent are possible with the DEHESIVE® SFX system. This makes production considerably more cost-effective for releasepaper and label manufacturers. In addition, the properties of the new silicone polymers can be optimized specifically for fast labeling processes. The polymers’ high reactivity stems from their molecules’ star-like branched structure, in which every silicone chain branches even further. At the end of every branch, there is a vinyl group, which makes addition curing possible. Due to this three-dimensional molecular architecture, DEHESIVE® SFX polymers are able to crosslink significantly better than conventional linear silicone polymers. Thanks to this high reactivity, coating
40
August 2015
systems based on DEHESIVE® SFX are ideal for use in high-speed coating equipment. Even at low catalyst dosage, they yield a fully cured silicone layer. The resulting release properties are ideal for machine delamination at high throughputs. Due to the flat release force profile, very little force is required for delamination even when labels are removed very quickly – such as during mass production of consumer goods. The release properties do not change, even after protracted storage of the laminate.
•
• The new star polymers are tailored to high-speed applications and differ in the number of branches, vinyl content and viscosity. The curing rate, release force profile and coverage of the substrate surface can be specifically adjusted to customers’ requirements. • Of the new silicone polymers, DEHESIVE® SFX 195 has the lowest viscosity. This product is ideal for coating smooth and dense release papers. The substrates are covered so well that low coating weights are possible. With DEHESIVE® SFX 195, low release forces are possible at high peel rates. • Within the new product family, DEHESIVE® SFX 250 achieves the highest curing rate and makes the biggest platinum savings possible. A release layer based on this polymer
is characterized by an extremely flat release force profile. This is an advantage when particularly high peel rates are the target. DEHESIVE® SFX 280 features an extremely balanced range of properties. The polymer cures rapidly and is suitable for the efficient coating of dense surfaces as well as porous ones. It has a flat release force profile and is thus the allrounder among the new, highly branched polymers. With its comparatively high viscosity, DEHESIVE® SFX 380 is the specialist for use on porous papers. The polymer is able to cover absorbent substrates excellently. Release forces remain low even at high peel rates.
DEHESIVE® SFX with AMA® Anti-Misting Additive During the coating of release papers, misting may occur, especially at high coating speeds. This is undesirable. On the one hand, because equipment can become dirty as a result; on the other, because the quality of the silicone release layer decreases when mist deposits on the freshly coated release liner. That’s why WACKER also offers its new DEHESIVE® SFX polymers with integrated anti-misting additive AMA®. At high coating speeds, AMA® prevents misting and thus significantly improves the coating result. WACKER will be present at Labelexpo Europe, Booth 7A27.

FDA opens possibilities of personalized drugs distant possibility today, may not be denied with the maturing and general acceptance of the technology. Just imagine the doctor prescribing the process of manufacturing medicine to patients rather than certain number of pills certain number of times. It can be an amazing world. Created by Aprecia Pharmaceuticals, the drug – called Spritam – is a dissolvable tablet used to treat certain types of seizures in adults and children with epilepsy. If we look at these Spritam tablets, they would appear like any other tablets but they are altogether different – they are manufactured through 3D printing technology. The drug used far and wide by millions suffering from epilepsy has just been approved for consumer use by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is the first 3D printed drug approved by FDA in the history of medicine. This landmark event can change the course of how drugs are manufactured and have greater influence on the pharmaceutical industry world over. “By combining 3D printing technology with a highly-prescribed epilepsy treatment, Spritam is designed to fill a need for patients who struggle with their current medication experience,” according to Don Wetherhold, CEO of Aprecia. As a result of Aprecia’s proprietary 3D printing process known as the ZipDose Technology platform, the physical composition of the Spritam pill can be made more porous than typical pills, meaning that it dissolves almost instantaneously when added to a liquid. It literally melts in your mouth with just a sip of water or other liquid, making it easier to swallow. Aprecia refers to these new 3D-printed pills as “fast-melt,” to differentiate them from tablets and capsules. Furthermore, the new manufacturing technology opens new customization options for individual patient need and specific dosage. In other words, with 3D printing, each dosage can be individually measured and then printed. The hope that patients will be able to print their own medicines at home is though a

Earlier FDA approved the first 3D printed prosthetic. Last year, the agency held a workshop on 3D printing for medical device makers, which shows the modern perspective of authorities on manufacture and consumption of drugs. Aprecia Pharmaceuticals, the company that pioneered the concept of the 3D-printed pill, has already received more than 50 patents related to pharmaceutical applications for 3D printing. Aprecia Pharmaceuticals makes the oral medication through a three-dimensional printing process, which builds the pill by spreading layers of the drug on top of one
another until the right dosage is reached. This technique allows the pill to deliver a higher dosage of medicine – up to 1,000 milligrams – while being porous enough to dissolve quickly. These attributes can be particularly beneficial for patients who have a hard time swallowing their medication, and miss doses of treatment, the company says. In addition, with Spritam there is no measuring required as each dose is individually packaged, making it easy to carry this treatment on the go. Aprecia says it expects the drug to be available early next year for adults and children. Everything from toys to spare mechanical parts, and food and fashion have been made using a 3D printing process. It’s the first time that medicine for direct human consumption has been approved by FDA.

BST eltromat presents innovations at LABELEXPO To focus on the areas of 100% inspection, workflow, web monitoring and colour measurement and web guide regulation. At the end of September the world’s largest specialist event for the labelling and packaging industry will start with the LABELEXPO EUROPE in Brussels, Belgium. BST eltromat International will present its latest solutions at Halle 6, Stand 6C46 of the show. With the focus on the areas of 100% inspection, workflow, web monitoring and colour measurement and web guide regulation, BST eltromat will present innovative solutions, which contribute to improvements in production efficiency. Apart from the established product portfolio, the trade fair visitors can get to know further developed solutions for web guiding live. Ingo Ellerbrock, Product Manager comments: “The trend in label printing is increasingly going in the direction of standardized, extendable compact solutions. At LABELEXPO we present our cost saving entry level solution for web guiding with EcoGuide amongst others. Furthermore, we are combining a Wide Array Sensor from our subsidiary AccuWeb Inc. USA with our tried and tested controller ekr 500 digital for the first time. These Wide Array Sensors have large measurement areas to electronically compensate for changes in the web width, and therefore make mechanical adjustments and/or manual alignments of the sensors superfluous.” Apart from the further developments in web guiding, BST CompactGuide and SmartGuide, the digital sensor CLS Pro 600 and the current ekr controller generation will also be presented. The trade fair visitors can also look forward to BST eltromat showing its innovative solution for the measurement of absolute colour values with the iPQ-Spectral. In addition, a further process sequence will also be introduced, which was developed in cooperation with coe, a renowned company in the pre-print stage. “What is brand new is that we have transferred the fitting of the colour measurement system from the machine into the pre-print stage,” reveals Dr. Christopher Kauczor, Product Manager. “Therefore, data and colour values could be determined even in the pre-print stage, which is significantly more economic. This leads to an optimization of processes which pays off.” The development partner coe will
also present the joint solution at its trade fair booth at LABELEXPO.
Innovative 100% print inspection due to high performance LED lighting Dirk Volkening, Product Manager, about a new feature of the iPQ-Center: “iPQCheck, the module of the iPQ-Center for the 100% print inspection, now has new, selfdeveloped high performance LED lighting. This means that the module is excellently suited for printing flexible packaging, for all opaque (lightproof) and reflective materials, but of course also for normal paper. We are pleased to be able to introduce these further developments to a larger audience at LABELEXPO, and look forward to the reaction.”
Optimum workflow for maximum production speed “We are not short on innovations,” Volkening assures us. This also includes the Shark 4000 Lex. The flexible, adjustable 100% inspection system for use on rewinders and narrow web printing machines will support the iPQ-Workflow from now on. “Of course, all data will still be recorded e.g. on the
customer server and can be viewed on any PC,” says Volkening. “But due to the fact that the focus is on the important data when evaluating the minutes, the rewinder only stops at the process relevant points. In this way, the production can be run at maximum speed.” This means a significant process improvement says Volkening on the innovations for the Shark 4000 Lex.
Video web monitoring with extended operating concept A further trade fair focus of BST eltromat is the most economic model for video web monitoring, the PowerScope 4000. The operation of the system primarily conceived for label printing and other narrow web applications, is now even more user friendly. “We have taken on an established operating element from our “large” solutions, and added a joystick to the PowerScope 4000. This makes the operating concept of the rotatable and removable keyboard and touch screen even more flexible, and the handling even more intuitive,” reports Dr. Christopher Kauczor and adds: “But that is not all. Not by a long shot. In future, the PowerScope 4000 will have the optional possibility of recording a freely configurable order history.”

who have bought the packages with the error. MAS will also reprint new folders for the SG50 commemorative notes set to correct the typo which misspelt the name of president Yusof Ishak.

Royal Academy and YR STORE collaboration produces one-off designs using Epson technology Visitors to the Royal Academy of Arts Burlington Gardens Festival were offered the opportunity to create and print their own special customised t-shirts. The live interactive t-shirt printing pop-up, run by print specialists YR STORE, used the latest Epson direct-to-garment desktop printer and featured artwork and images by Royal Academy Schools’ students, tutors and associated artists. YR STORE’s unique interactive printed garment concept lets customers create personalised clothing on easy-to-use touchscreen terminals, then send the finished design for printing on Epson SureColor printers – while they wait. With permanent retail set-ups in Topshop Oxford Street store, YR STORE also specialises in experiential and corporate events, working for a number of leading brands such as Nike and Google. YR STORE founder Tim Williams says: “Designing and creating your own t-shirt is such a fun and engaging experience. We were very excited when the Royal Academy approached us with a view to collaborating for this event, we couldn’t wait to make it happen.” The Royal Academy Schools is situated in the heart of the Royal Academy and is the only free three-year postgraduate art course in the UK. It receives no government
funding so relies on the generous support of it patrons and sponsors, such as Epson, and its own fund-raising activities. Mark Hampson, Head of Materials Processes, RA Schools, said: “The Royal Academy Schools has had a long and fruitful collaborative relationship with Epson. This includes the unique luxury of its own purpose-built Epson Digital Media Suite, which all the students have access to. The idea of designing and printing our own t-shirts as part of the one day fund-raising event was very exciting and we were delighted to be working with Epson and YR STORE on the project.” Given a prime spot in the Burlington Gardens Gallery foyer, the YR STORE set-up and print booth was managed by YR STORE Production Manager Dan Hughes and included three touch-screen terminals, a heat press and an Epson SureColor SC-F2000 direct-to-garment printer. Dan says: “The SureColor SC-F2000 is the perfect option for live event printing. It is portable, easy to set-up and use and is extremely reliable. It provides superb output quality in superfast time – printing a t-shirt in 27 seconds! Everyone’s amazed when they first see it in action and feel the print quality. Expectations are more than matched. It is the perfect companion to our interactive design process and, combined with RA artwork, the results on the day were fantastic.”
Using the touch-screens, customers were able to select one of the many images supplied by RA Schools’ students, tutors and artists, which they could customise and personalise to produce their own unique design. The t-shirt was then printed and heat pressed and ready-to-wear within minutes. Over the course of the day around 150 t-shirts were printed – all individual works of art. Mark says: “It was a hugely successful and well-received festival and the t-shirt printing was a real hit. It was great to work with Epson and YR STORE on this project and Dan was fantastic to work with – creative, knowledgeable, attentive to detail and good fun too! I look forward to working together again in the future, as the Epson/YR STORE/ RA collaboration was a very natural, creative fit.”w
