EFI and Landa form Strategic Alliance Landa DFE unveiled, based exclusively on EFI Fiery Digital Front End technology.

EFI and Landa Corporation have entered into a partnership agreement for the development of a digital front end (DFE) as part of Landa’s end-to-end Nanographic Printing solution. Landa’s new DFE will employ high-performance, EFI-developed Fiery technology. With this technology, the Landa DFE will offer unique, new functionality for sheetfed and webfed Landa Nanographic Printing Presses in the commercial, folding carton, point-of-sale, publishing, and flexible packaging markets.

“We chose Fiery technology and EFI as our development partner to deliver the highest quality ultra-high-speed front-end platform to match the quality and performance of our Nanographic Printing presses.” - Benny Landa

Key Notes : > Landa’s new DFE will employ highperformance, EFI-developed Fiery technology.

The Landa DFE will stream jobs at full printing speed for 4-8 colour printing with Landa Nanographic Printing Presses and will enable press operators to perform last-minute job changes on the press, to proof jobs and to print rush jobs on-the-fly. In addition, it will collect production feedback from the presses and support closed-loop color control and inspection. The Landa DFE will support all job dynamics including static, VDP (Variable Data Printing) and EPID (Every Page Is Different) printing. The agreement brings together two pioneering businesses in the digital printing industry with the vision to fundamentally change how mainstream applications are produced. Offering a breakthrough for cost-effectively printing short-to-medium job lengths up to five times faster than existing digital printing presses, Landa’s revolutionary presses create demanding technical challenges for processing job data. EFI, as a global player with expertise in colour DFE and digital print workflow technology, is uniquely positioned to deliver such cutting edge technology to meet Landa’s stringent colour management, job workflow and integrated MIS demands. EFI CEO Guy Gecht and Landa Chairman and CEO Benny Landa announced the partnership to

an audience of 1,000+ EFI customers during the opening session of Connect, EFI’s annual users conference in Las Vegas. “Benny Landa is a legend in our industry, and we are excited to work with his company as its exclusive DFE technology provider,” said Gecht. “Landa Nanographic Printing Presses have potential to accelerate the migration of mainstream commercial printing and packaging to digital printing. The Landa DFE provides a proven, ultra-high-speed and wellintegrated front-end platform that Landa customers will require.” “Our unique Nanographic Printing process enables us to offer offset-quality digital printing and a combination of format size and throughput speeds unprecedented in the graphic arts industry,” said Benny Landa. “Reaching this remarkable and exciting goal requires partnering with best-in-class providers. That is the reason we chose Fiery technology and EFI as our development partner - to deliver the highest quality ultra-high-speed front-end platform to match the quality and performance of our Nanographic Printing presses.”

End-to-end digital printing solution for mainstream applications Landa selected EFI because of its expertise in high-speed digital systems and colour and print management. Landa customers can use the new DFE to create an end-to-end solution that naturally

fits into their printing operation, whether full offset, all-digital or hybrid offset/digital. Landa Nanographic Printing Presses will be installed next to offset presses and use the same substrates. With the new DFE, Landa Nanographic Printing Presses will integrate into a printer’s existing prepress, production, and business management workflow and finishing equipment. The Landa DFE will also ensure consistency, accuracy and compliance to leading colour standards. It will enable high-speed, variable-data printing on any off-the-shelf B1 format (41 in. / 1,050 mm) substrate.

High-end processing with integrated workflow capabilities As with current EFI Fiery platforms, the new DFE will integrate with EFI’s MIS/ERP

systems, as well as with third-party prepress and workflow platforms, for streamlined job management and processing. Fiery is the first and only DFE platform that carries a 100% perfect pass rating from industry organization VIGC’s PDF RIP Audit. The Fiery DFE technology EFI is developing for Landa will use scalable, robust systems

offering the processing power needed to drive large volumes of offset-quality digital images, including personalized/variable-data content. The new Landa DFE will enter beta testing as part of the beta installations of the B1 (41 in. / 1,050 mm) format Landa S10 Nanographic Printing Press slated for Q4 of this year.

Manroland Sheetfed delivers in 2013 Manroland Sheetfed, the German press builder rescued from insolvency by British industrialist Tony Langley two years ago, has posted a profit in the year to 31st December 2013. In the recently published Langley Holdings plc Annual Report & Accounts for 2013, Manroland Sheetfed GmbH is said to have traded in line with expectations to make a small profit on revenues of €314 million, although with internal charges the press builder contributed some €10 million to the group’s €91.4 million profit before tax. The Offenbach company delivered just over 100 new presses or 528 printing units during the year to December. Dr. Peter Conrady Head of Sales said, “We are delighted with this result which was slightly higher than budgeted. We have a turnover in excess of our €300 million target with a positive operating profit and this is very good news.” Speaking via webex in an interview with the European press in December, CEO Rafael Penuela said that the company’s strategy had been to concentrate principally on its existing customers, focusing on improving their productivity and lowering costs. Looking to 2014, Mr Penuela said that the focus on helping their customers to be more competitive will remain at the centre of the company’s strategy.

New Granit three-knife trimmer from Muller Martini Features innovative SmartPress technology The new Granit three-knife trimmer by Muller Martini impresses with innovative SmartPress technology, resulting in consistent, first-class trim quality. The fully automated equipment has a wide range of applications in softcover and hardcover lines. The Granit uses patented SmartPress technology, which has proven its worth in the higher performance range, to provide optimal, consistently high trim quality. It ensures a gentle and controlled pressing procedure in which all air between the sheets of paper completely escapes, even if the product is bulky, allowing for the product to be trimmed perfectly, which is key to consistently high product quality. SmartPress technology is adaptive. In other words, pressing automatically adjusts during production to fluctuations in product thickness, ensuring consistent book quality.

The new Granit three-knife trimmer from Muller Martini has an extremely wide range of applications. Costeffective production is ensured thanks to SmartPress technology and full automation.

The Granit three-knife trimmer from Muller Martini ensures cost-effective production in a wide range of applications. The Granit can take full advantage of seamless automation in a fully networked perfect binding line, such as the Pantera or Alegro A6. The operator can perform the necessary fine-tuning directly on the central screen of the perfect binder during production. In addition, the trimming cassette

and pressing pad can be exchanged in just a few steps, which shortens job changeover times considerably. If used in existing perfect binding lines, the Granit increases efficiency enormously. Production runs can be planned and performed efficiently with a job changeover time of just three minutes. The productivity of an older line can be vastly increased, especially for relatively small runs, while the required investment volume remains limited. The Granit also provides top-class trim quality in hardcover lines. The SmartPress technology meets all the requirements in this area too. In order to achieve short setup times, the three-knife trimmer is easily connected to the commander of the casing-in machine, which enables size data to be transferred quickly. At companies where perfect-bound products are trimmed using a guillotine cutter, the production process is rendered considerably more efficient using the Granit. If the new three-knife trimmer is used as a stand-alone machine, loading is always ergonomic and safe.

Heidelberg verifies Anicolor cost leadership using PrintAS Calculator from PIA Using software from Printing Industries of America (PIA) and its own data, Heidelberg has verified that its XL 75 Anicolor digital offset press is less expensive than a 4-up e-ink-based system for runs as low as 250 29”x23” sheets. PIA, the industry’s largest trade association, recently released its PrintAS Cost Calculator to member firms. The PrintAS tool is designed specifically to determine the cost for any job, based on digital and offset production processes. Users input all of the factors they believe will impact the cost structure of a specific job, i.e., fixed costs of maintenance, financing, makeready and plates, as well as variable costs of staffing, paper, ink and click charges. The calculator then determines the precise cost crossover point among different configurations.

Do the Math Results unambiguously confirm Heidelberg’s Anicolor inking technology as the optimal solution for the cost-efficient production of short- and very short runs in 29” format for commercial, label, package printing and POP applications. “This software confirms the viability of our Anicolor technology, and firmly establishes the XL 75 Anicolor as the cost leader starting as low as 250 sheets for straight printing and 290-350 sheets for perfecting,” said Joerg Daehnhardt, director

of product management for Heidelberg. “Confirming the crossover point to Anicolor offset at just 250 sheets is huge news for the industry - and a far cry from other

equally eye-opening experience, Heidelberg offers a variety of input data in Excel spreadsheet form at http://sso.us.heidelberg. com/Anicolor/CostCalculator.pdf. These

vendor-supplied calculations that claim a crossover at several thousand sheets. That’s why we call it ‘Digital Offset 2.0’. Get ready to be surprised as you do your own calculations.” The PrintAS calculator doesn’t even take into consideration all the other advantages of Heidelberg’s digital offset press. For example, the residual value of the XL 75 Anicolor after five years of use is considerably higher than 4-up, e-ink-based systems like the HP Indigo 10000, such that after achieving lower production costs, users also will be able to collect even more money as they re-invest.

data may be plugged into the PIA PrintAS calculator to demonstrate why Heidelberg’s XL 75 Anicolor press is the ideal solution for printing service providers looking to grow their business in the 29” short-run segment. Take a look and tell us what you think!

Anticipate a Revelation PIA member firms may satisfy their curiosity by downloading the PrintAS Cost Calculator at www.printing.org/free, and by plugging in data specific to their operation. For an

Advantage: Anicolor The XL 75 Anicolor provides a number of key advantages over 29” digital production devices. With superior substrate flexibility (ranging from onion skin to 32 pt. board), significantly higher production speed (15,000 sheets per hour, equal to 90,000 8.5x11 sheets per hour), and incredibly short makereadies, the XL 75 Anicolor digital offset press opens the door to a huge variety of value-added applications with substantial profit potential. Cost-conscious print service providers can tap those added profits without the click charges commonly incurred during the lease of digital printing equipment. Compatibility with standard consumables means that the savings per sheet can be as significant as 90 percent, compared with 29” e-ink based devices such as the HP Indigo 10000 digital press. Heidelberg also has created its own costto-print model, including an analysis of run length break-even and cost per job comparison, customizable to your business. Additional information can be found in a new technology review report that explains the benefits of the game-changing Anicolor inking technology. To preview and download the report, “Discover Digital Offset 2.0,” or to download Heidelberg’s Anicolor cost-to-print calculator, interested people may visit the company Website.

HarperCollins accuses Apple of copyright infringement News Corp.’s HarperCollins, one of the world’s largest publishing companies, recently requested that Google remove search engine links to some of its own books on Apple’s iTunes in what appears to be a poorly executed attempt to fight online piracy. HarperCollins made the takedown requests through Digimarc, a company that provides

anti-piracy protection for publishers and authors. Digimarc’s takedown requests included eight links to HarperCollins e-books offered through Apple’s iTunes Store. The eight targeted books are all mystery novels written by Agatha Christie.

Electronics For Imaging, Inc. has announced its results for the fourth quarter and full year of 2013. For the quarter ended December 31, 2013, the Company reported record revenue of $197.2 million, up 13% compared to fourth quarter 2012 revenue of $174.1 million. For the twelve months ended December 31, 2013, the Company reported record revenue of $727.7 million, up 12% year-over-year compared to $652.1 million for the same period in 2012. “The EFI team delivered a record fourth quarter with strong execution, driving double-digit growth across all segments and regions and capping a terrific 2013,” said Guy Gecht, Chief Executive Officer of EFI. “Looking ahead, we are excited about our opportunities from the ongoing migration of analogue to digital printing, and continue to be very focused on helping customers become more productive and competitive.”

KBA implements further steps in restructuring its core business The situation on the international printing press market remains tense given the increasing significance of online media and regional economic problems. Growing submarkets, such as packaging and digital printing, oppose shrunken segments, such as publication and newspaper printing. Structural changes in the printing industry have continued since the start of the financial crisis in autumn 2008. The word’s second-largest printing press manufacturer, Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA), started to react to this development already in early 2009 by restructuring the distribution of work between its plants. It has since reduced its capacity by 25% in its core sheetfed and web offset business, which has been especially effected. The number of employees on the group payroll has fallen from 8,200 in 2007 to some 6,300. This total will fall below 6,000

with phased retirement schemes and other measures coming into effect. With effect from 1 January 2013 collective special regulations, which were agreed by KBA, employee representatives and representatives from IG Metall, come into place at the main plants in Würzburg and Radebeul. Introduced to alleviate fluctuations in capacity utilisation, these amendments also serve to improve the profitability of the core sheetfed and web press business. The amendments to the wage agreements will be in place until the end of 2014 and contain, among other things, the removal of hours from flexitime accounts without adjusting wages as well as a reduction in the weekly regular working times with corresponding adjustments to wages and salary.

Experienced print expert bolsters KBA team in Radebeul With effect from 1 January 2014 Walter Hartmann (51) has taken over as head of marketing for sheetfed offset presses at the Koenig & Bauer (KBA) plant in Radebeul. The distinguished print veteran with many years of experience at prominent sheetfed offset firms follows in the footsteps of Jürgen Veil (50), who after 15 successful years at the helm sought new challenges in the sheetfed offset product house. Veil took up the role of key account manager packaging in September 2013. After completing an apprenticeship as offset printer and an advanced training as print technician, Walter Hartmann held

various positions in sales and internal sales at Köselbuch in Kempten thus gaining indepth knowledge of the inner workings of a printing house. Born in Allgäu, Hartmann was able to broaden his management expertise further as works manager at AZ Druck und Datentechnik in the 11 years that followed. The book and commercial print enterprise has over 200 employees at its facilities in Berlin and Kempten. In this role he was responsible for all of the technical departments (prepress, printing plant and bindery) and contributed significantly to introducing new technologies and processes in every production field.

J & K printers felicitate AIFMP team Jammu Printers Association and Kashmir Printers Association organised a felicitation programme of new office bearers of All India Federation of Master Printers (AIFMP) at KC Residency on 18 January. Sh. Kamal Chopra Gen. Secretary North India Printers Association (NIPA) was chief guest on the occasion while veteran journalist and Secretary General Press Club of Jammu Mr. Sohail Kazmi was the guest of honour. The function was marked by the release of Jammu Printers Association’s official website and yearly calendar. S. Joginder Singh, President Jammu Printers Association gave a broad outlook of the vision for future as well as candidly raised various issues related to printing fraternity. He pointed out the outsourcing of Government printing works to other states and insisted that such works should come to local printers. He also expressed his concern regarding frequent rise in price of paper. manufacturers as well as hard case bound book producers. It is a significant production enhancer for environments where there is no automatic line available for hardcovers. A large number of producers get it done by hand and the machine serves for sticking the headband onto backs of separate book blocks. It joins a headband with double sided adhesive tape and unwinds a required length of headband (up to 70mm) with double sided adhesive tape. The operator then inserts a book block into the machine. The headband is stripped off with the help of a pedal. Then further material is fed in to allow the processing of subsequent book block. The compact machine features stepper motor which is controlled through PLC for variable head band size. The machine can produce up to 20 book blocks per minute depending on the thickness of the book block.

the freedom to configure users and groups without limitations, and with any level of permission. In addition, Switch 12 allows new access rights for individual users and groups to be based on the existing Active Directory; making it unnecessary to create new users or groups within Switch. Administrators simply import users and groups from the Active Directory to create new access rights for particular jobs or projects. Switch 12 also includes support for new Configurators, the tools that allow users to integrate their applications and automate third-party software application tasks. Included in Switch 12 are updates to The Adobe® Creative Cloud™ and Quark Xpress Configurators. In addition, Switch 12 includes new Configurators for CorelDraw and HP SmartStream Production Center JDF Control. Switch 12 is compatible with the latest operating systems including Mac OS X Mavericks 10.9 and Windows version 8.1. Fabian Prudhomme, Vice President of Enfocus, commented on the release, saying: “The nature of the graphic arts industry keeps evolving; so businesses need flexible solutions that can keep pace with those changes without causing inconvenience to operators. This is why Enfocus developed Switch 12. The new features included in this release permit companies of all sizes – from the small print provider to large commercial operations – to leverage Switch’s modular and open architecture to make workflow changes a positive, relatively rapid experience.” “Switch gives organizations the toolkit they need to be successful today, and when they experience growth and begin exploring new revenue streams, Switch will still be there to accommodate them as their workflow requirements change,” Prudhomme says. “As you can see, Switch not only optimizes organizations’ existing technology investments by integrating old and new for maximum benefit and efficiency, it is also a valuable and continuously evolving, relevant technology by itself.”

Kodak Investment helps Westdale Press step up efficient operation Effective remote proofing capabilities sealed the deal for a raft of solutions Improved speed and operational efficiency as well as the ability to enable two departments to oversee smoother workflow prompted Westdale Press to invest in a number of solutions from Kodak. The Cardiff business is currently completing the installation of a KODAK MAGNUS Q800 Platesetter, KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System, KODAK INSITE Prepress Portal and KODAK COLORFLOW Software.

“As one of the UK’s flagship brochure and magazine printing houses, Westdale Press knows only too well how important it is to offer a high-quality, efficient service. Kodak has a number of solutions that can help business such as Westdale effectively achieve just that while also improving their day-to-day operation” Martin Mayo

Key Notes : > Installing a KODAK MAGNUS Q800, PRINERGY Workflow System, INSITE Prepress Portal and COLORFLOW Software. > AColour control with KODAK COLORFLOW Software - a vital investment > KODAK PRINERGY Workflow - ability to enhance productivity in any printing environment

The £19m turnover litho operation with 140 employees runs two sheetfed Heidelberg XL perfectors and a Heidelberg M600 web press. It produces a wide range of material from report and accounts and journals to catalogues and books, for large UK retailers and department stores. “The decision to invest in the KODAK Systems was part of a long overdue upgrade of our prepress and repro facility,” comments Managing Director Alan Padbury. “A big driver was to introduce decent online proofing capabilities via KODAK PRINERGY Workflow System and KODAK INSITE Prepress Portal. So many clients now do not see a hard copy proof and Kodak provided one of the better online proofing options. It ticked all the boxes.” Colour control with KODAK COLORFLOW Software was also a vital investment he states: “It is of paramount importance these days. You have to be able to accept proof from anywhere in the world and be able to match it on the press. You need colour

control to ensure you are among the best in the world.” He continued: “There were a number of factors that limited our existing system. We examined all the alternatives on the market and Kodak’s was the absolute best. A platesetter was on the cards too and it seemed sensible to buy that from our new workflow provider.” Some may consider the introduction of a new prepress workflow a daunting prospect but not Mr. Padbury: “I know people approach upgrading their prepress in the same way they would regard transferring their banks accounts. They would be worried it would be a hassle and problems would arise. We have changed our prepress before and when we did we found it helped make improvements. We improved the way we and the business worked. Because there are changes in the technology it is a good way to sweep things clean and make positive changes to housekeeping.” As for the decision to pick Kodak’s CTP he said: “I have been talking to Kodak on and off for years. The KODAK MAGNUS Q800 Platesetter is one of the most rounded and effective systems in the market place. It has a good reputation.” Mr. Padbury is pleased with the results so far: “The

solutions are installed and going very well. While it is still in its early days I expect to see two gains – the first will be in sheer speed, efficiency, ease of use and less general hassle. The second will be a spill over of this. Because it is so simple and easy to use we are hoping to be able to integrate certain production areas and day-to-day functions with the previously separately run reprographic department melding with prepress. This means it will be possible for both departments to carry out the same jobs and will ease the stress with more people able to handle fewer jobs better. The eagerly anticipated addition of KODAK PRINERGY Rules-Based Automation Software will also have a significant impact, he says: “We are looking forward to introducing RBA to help reduce costs and increase productivity. The key benefits of KODAK PRINERGY Workflow is its ability to enhance productivity in any printing environment for large or short runs. It uses JDF to share job data, imposition, and pageassignment information with content preparation, production planning, prepress, and business systems. It helps reduce costs and build a more efficient environment with improved control

and automation based on industry-standard specifications. Working with Kodak has also been a positive experience says Mr. Padbury: “The thing I found extremely pleasant was the friendly and helpful way all the staff have been over the installation. Martin Mayo, Cluster Director UK & Nordic Vice President Kodak, EAMER, says, “As one of the UK’s flagship brochure and magazine

printing houses that serves numerous well respected High Street names, Westdale Press knows only too well how important it is to offer a high-quality, efficient service. Kodak has a number of solutions that can help business such as Westdale effectively achieve just that while also improving their day-to-day operation. Once they fully integrate our software, particularly RBA, we look forward to helping them make even further improvements.

UPM closes down the UPM Docelles Fine Paper Mill UPM will permanently close down the Docelles paper mill in France. Employee information and consultation negotiations were completed on December 13, 2013 and Social Plan was approved by French authorities on January 13, 2014. UPM offers support to employees in order to alleviate the effects caused by staff reductions in relation to the closing of the mill. The Docelles mill

employs 161 people. The plan of sale or other exit of the UPM Docelles mill was originally announced on 17 January 2013. It is part of UPM’s plan to adjust its graphic paper capacity and support operations to match the declining demand in Europe. The production will cease by the end of January 2014. With the closure of the mill UPM will reduce a total of 160 000 tons of its fine

paper capacity. “UPM has been conducting an active search for a buyer which could offer a credible future for the mill. Unfortunately this search did not result in a binding, credible offer for the mill. However, UPM is still open to consider the sale of Docelles mill machinery and property, says Petteri Kalela, Senior Vice President of UPM Paper ENA.

Heidelberg expands range of Saphira Eco consumables Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) has been offering a range of particularly eco-friendly consumables - the Saphira Eco product line - since 2011. This range is subject to the strictest criteria in the print media industry for the environmental compatibility of consumables. Heidelberg has now tightened these criteria once again and adapted them to the latest international environmental standards. It is also further expanding the range of Saphira Eco products it offers. Users can now benefit from the Saphira Blanket Pro 200, an eco-friendly blanket that has excellent all-round properties and is particularly suitable for commercial printers looking to make their production operations even more environmentally friendly and sustainable. Working closely with suppliers, Heidelberg has defined and introduced the world’s first criteria for environmentally friendly blankets. To define these criteria, the company reviewed the production process and identified and evaluated the green credentials of the substances used.

Asda becomes first retailer to implement PantoneLIVE X-Rite and Pantone, Danaher Corporation brands, announced that Asda, one of Britain’s top value retailers and a wholly owned subsidiary of Wal-Mart, will employ PantoneLIVE™, a cloud-based colour service, throughout its global supply chain. PantoneLIVE allows Asda to standardize on a single platform and manage digital access rights to facilitate colour communication across packaging materials and suppliers, improving operational efficiencies.

With colour so critically tied to brand equity, maintaining colour consistency across product packaging is essential to ensure authenticity and consumer confidence. The PantoneLIVE suite of solutions provide Asda with a secure, cloud-based repository for its precise colour data, allowing brand managers to communicate colour specifications across the supply chain and validate compliance and track supplier performance anywhere in the world.

“The proposition was challenging – develop a solution that not only enables us to assess print quality across the entire list of Asda approved packaging printers, but also present complex, technical colour data in an easy-to-understand format,” said Andy Wilson, print manager at Asda. “As most of the print validation solutions on the market were aimed at printers rather than brand owners, it quickly became apparent that selecting the right partner to develop the solution was crucial, and X-Rite/Pantone ticked all our boxes.”

“Printers being able to validate their own work in real-time makes PantoneLIVE a game changer,” said Jason Gilmartin, senior print manager at Asda. “With its implementation, we will now be able to manage our print base intelligently with true ‘closed loop’ color’ management from initial concept to final print whilst slashing waste, reducing cost and driving greater brand consistency. At last, the days of print managers approving print at the end of a printing press are coming to an end.”

22

January 2014

“It is mission critical for a large retailer such as Asda to achieve better and more consistent colour results across different categories, suppliers and regions. We are extremely pleased that PantoneLIVE is the chosen solution for accurate colour communication and control in their entire packaging supply chain,” explained Dr. Sonia Megert, vice president of the Pantone Digital Business unit at XRite/Pantone. “Spectral data for Asda’s main brand colours are stored securely in the PantoneLIVE cloud, thus helping reduce colour variation in the production process, ensuring their colours are correct every time, on every packaging material.” In addition, PantoneLIVE’s centralized colour management system helps achieve speed to market efficiencies from initial design to final production, ultimately lowering product development and manufacturing costs. Asda will begin to deploy PantoneLIVE immediately with Smart Price, Chosen by You and Extra Special private label brands.

Readership survey finding rubbished At least eighteen leading newspaper groups of the country have condemned the findings of the latest Indian Readership Survey (IRS 2013). A statement jointly issued by the newspapers in public interest stated, “The survey is riddled with shocking anomalies, which defy logic and commonsense. They also grossly contradict audited circulation figures (ABC) of longstanding.” The statement highlighted major anomalies in the report, including: • Hindu Business Line has thrice as many readers in Manipur as in Chennai. • Hitavada, the leading English newspaper of Nagpur with a certified circulation of over 60,000, doesn’t appear to have a single reader now. • There are wild swings in overall newspaper readership across states. While Punjab has lost a one-third of all its readers in just a year since the last IRS, neighboring Haryana has grown by 17%. • Every major newspaper in Andhra Pradesh, irrespective of language, has lost readers by 30 to 65%.

There are similar wild swings at the city level. Mumbai shows a 20.3% growth in overall English readership, while Delhi - a fastergrowing city overall on all macro indices shows a drop of 19.5%. Saying that there are “hundreds of such anomalies in the report”, the statement “urges advertisers and media agencies not to rely upon or use the recently published IRS results in any way”. It also calls upon RSCI and MRUC, the conductors of the IRS, to “withdraw the results of IRS Q4 2013 immediately and put a stop to all future editions of this survey, as their continued publication will cause irreparable injury to the reputation of established publications.” The 18 publishers are: Jagran, Bhaskar, India Today, Ananda Bazar Patrika, Lokmat, Outlook, Daily News and Analysis (DNA), Sakshi, The Hindu, The Times of India, Amar Ujala, The Tribune, Bartaman Patrika, Aaj Samaj, The Statesman, Mid Day, Nai Duniya and Dinakaran

CSQ and Q.I. Press Controls sign for Italy’s first: Closed loop colour on newspaper press Centro Stampa Quotidiani (CSQ) and Q.I. Press Controls both will have their premiere in the Italian market. For the first time a newspaper press will be equipped with closed loop colour control: IDS on CSQ’ WIFAG OF373/6 newspaper press. The investment will be for 8 IDS scanners for closed loop colour including dampening control. Centro Stampa Quotidiani (CSQ) is a modern newspaper printing company which started in 2000. It was built as a separate printing company by 2 editors who merged their printing force. Their architectural attractive site in Erbusco houses ‘state of the art’ technology, with 2 WIFAG presslines: a WIFAG OF370/GTD consisting of 10 printing towers and 2 folders and a WIFAG OF 373/6 with 8 printing towers and two folders installed in two phases in 2008 and 2010. CSQ prints about 15 titles daily, amongst which national and local newspaper and foreign titles for local distribution. The total annual circulation is 125 million copies. “We always follow new developments in the market very closely. As we already were familiar with Q.I. Press Controls because of the installation of their first generation colour register system (IRS) on our WIFAG OF370GTD press in 2005, we followed the

developments on their IDS closed loop colour control as well,” states Dario de Cian, General Manager CSQ. CSQ will be the first newspaper printer in Italy to work with closed loop colour control, enabling the press to reproduce colours extremely accurately and consistently throughout the run. This will generate savings in labour and waste. “Given the good experiences with Q.I. Press Controls being our supplier during the past years, their continuous drive to deliver innovative, reliable solutions that comply to customer needs and their good customer service made us decide to invest in their IDS closed loop colour.” Dario de Cian proceeds: “I was impressed by customer visits and by the results achieved in several business cases. Especially one of the latest added IDS features, dampening control, drew my attention. The dampening-supply in the printing units may fluctuate at times and is now fully automatically identified and adjusted by IDS, and all at the same speed at which colours are adjusted. So, less worries about the control of the two-component offset process, ink and fountain solution control as they are now both automatically restrained by IDS.” Jaco Bleijenberg, International Director of

Sales & Marketing of Q.I. Press Controls: “We are very enthusiastic about this order. Not only because again it proves the growing importance of closed loop colour control in the newspaper printing industry. This installation will also represent an important reference site for our Southern European market.” Carlo Caporizzi, CEO of GMDE and Q.I. Press Controls’ agent for Italy: “This result confirms the good quality of Q.I. Press Controls’ solutions and of its organization given that CSQ is a satisfied QIPC customer since its start many years ago. We are proud to be partner of Q.I.P Press Controls and a recognised solution provider of CSQ with which we have a very long story of positive relationship and mutual respect. CSQ with this new project, demonstrated once again its attitude to invest in innovation to keep their facilities always ahead on the market”.

WAN-IFRA Color Quality Club chooses X-Rite eXact™ for state-of-the-art color measurements Newspaper Color Quality Club implements technology to help newspapers maintain competitive edge. When The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) decided it was time to introduce a new measuring technique for its International Newspaper Color Quality Club, it turned to X-Rite to ensure an effective and accurate solution. The decision was made as WAN-IFRA opened the 20th anniversary edition of its International Newspaper Color Quality Club competition, the only worldwide printing quality competition for newspapers. Members of the club include the world’s best-published colour newspapers who maintain rigorous printing standards. The goal of the International Newspaper Quality Club is to improve production quality of printed news, and increase competitiveness of newspapers as media. The competition has been held every two years since 1994. In 2012, 192 newspapers from 25 countries participated in this prestigious competition. “With the 2014 competition, we have introduced new state-of-the-art measuring technology to the Color Quality Club judging process. This technology incorporates the latest industry standards and technical advances,” says Manfred Werfel, Deputy CEO, Executive Director Competence Centre Newspaper Production & Special Projects, WAN-IFRA. Werfel explains that there are no fundamental changes to how the results of the International Newspaper Color Quality Club are obtained and evaluated, but some evaluation processes have been revised to stay current with the latest standards. Among them was the introduction of the new measuring technique. “Because the colour measuring devices previously used had become dated, the decision was made to use a new measuring technique,” he explains. “We chose two X-Rite eXact colour measuring devices for this purpose.” X-Rite eXact™ portable handheld spectrophotometers can be used to quickly measure, understand and communicate color and its status relative to standards. The eXact user interface, a color touch

screen, can be configured to display key functional elements in the order most likely to be needed by individual users, improving operator productivity, removing the opportunity for human error and resulting in increased color accuracy. Its BestMatch function enables press operators to more easily keep ink colors on target even before color shifts are visible to the human eye. Mr Werfel said the X-Rite’s eXact™ solutions were chosen for a number of reasons. “These measuring devices are suitable for prepress and printing, online at the PC and offline,” he explains. “X-Rite eXact has a touch screen colour display for offline use and no measuring table is required. It supports the measuring conditions M0 to M3 as specified by ISO standards, and color and density (Delta E) are measurable in a single pass. Wireless data transmission to a computer is also possible, and X-Rite’s cloud-based calibration via NetProfiler ensures inter-device agreement regardless of location.” The Color Quality Club also introduced changes to the application and evaluation process that include corrected target and tolerance values to achieve better agreement with the specifications of ISO 12647-3 for newsprint; amendments to dot gain, gray balance and general printing quality parameters; and a simpler colour conformity evaluation structure. Exclusive club membership is available to all winners of the competition. Benefits include receipt of

the prestigious award and promotion to give these outstanding publications an edge over competition for both readers and advertisers. With Color Quality Club results in hand, newspaper printers also have the ability to address customer complaints more confidently and increase quality awareness and know-how within their workforces. The competition helps define goals for production personnel and identify optimised materials on the basis of detailed evaluations. Winners can also ensure their advertisers that they can expect consistency and identical appearance of ads across titles and issues. Participation in the competition is open to all newspapers, independent of their production processes or the types of paper that are used. There are four categories within the competition: Coldset-offset printing on newsprint; Semicommercial heatset or UV-cured offset printing on newsprint; Semicommercial heatset or UV-cured offset printing on SC or LWC paper; and Printing on tinted paper or for printing processes other than offset (e.g. flexo or inkjet). Newspapers that successfully participate are awarded membership for a two-year period in the exclusive club of top-quality titles. Multiple winners and participants in the WAN-IFRA certification project also have the opportunity to be awarded membership in the Star Club for exceptional performance. Registration deadline for the 2014-2016 edition of the Club was 31 December 2013.

Sustainability is an integral part of the paper tissue value chain Industry veteran Roberto Berardi of the European Tissue Symposium explains how the sector is taking steps to stay ahead of the curve in meeting the challenges of sustainability. When you work in an industry that relies on forests for its base material then you naturally think long term. Business sustainability is a way of life in the European tissue industry where trees can have a growing cycle of up to 50 years. Europe has some of the most advanced forestry management systems in the world and performs well against a range of sustainability criteria. The goal of the tissue industry is to not only drive the adoption of ever-greater sustainability practices within our own sector, but to be an integral part of driving sustainable hygiene and human health throughout Europe. Sustainability must become a way of life.

Europe leads the world in paper recycling with levels at over 70% in 2012 – up from 40% in 1995. While paper consumption levels are the same today as in 1998, recycling levels are 150% higher.

Key Notes : > Industry’s continued ambition is to drive sustainable hygiene and human health. > Sustainability must become a way of life. > The new EU Timber Regulation ensures that only products from legally sourced wood are sold across the EU28.

30

January 2014

Before elaborating on some of the initiatives the industry is taking I should clearly define the concept of ‘sustainable business’. Sustainability is often described as having three pillars: social, environmental and economic. I agree of course but my preferred definition is one I learned in a seminar at Harvard Business School a few years ago where Sustainability was defined as Leadership and Responsibility. A business must set its direction placing the principles of sustainability at its very heart: its purpose, mission, strategy, goals, values and responsibilities. It must then create a corporate context and culture in which its actions are

economically, legally and ethically sound. By meeting each of these three criteria in all of its business actions an organisation can legitimately claim to be sustainable. And indeed as we have already seen, ethical requirements frequently become legal requirements over time as societal opinion moves to embrace a more sustainable approach to the way we do business. This is ultimately in agreement with the Brundtland Commission’s mission to unite countries to pursue sustainable development together. Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

So how is the European Tissue industry shaping up? The sector is working continuously to increase its sustainability across a host of different areas including recycling, recovery, transport, water and workplace safety. There are some well-established initiatives and also some exciting new projects being developed and likely to herald the future direction for the sector.

pressideas/ plc

committed to meet a voluntary recycling target of 70% in the EU +Switzerland and Norway by 2015 – a level already achieved today and higher than any other region in the world. I should stress though that Lifecycle analysis studies (LCA) show sustainable tissue products can be produced with both recovered and new fibres and that each has its benefits and shortcomings. Experts have carried out carbon footprint studies on toilet tissue that prove that the decision to use either fibre type does not significantly alter the carbon footprint and that neither fibre type can be considered environmentally preferable when considering carbon emissions.

Forest certification – a crucial development in demonstrating our sustainable credentials We are immensely proud of our most recent initiative in the area of Forest Certification. This is a crucial development for the sector and offers reassurance to our customers and consumers while also lending further credibility to the sector. ETS supports the use of fibres from sustainably and legally managed forests and encourages the use of third party certification as one of the best ways to ensure that suppliers meet these requirements. We do not favour any single scheme but support the various international and national Forest Certification schemes that offer third party verification or certification of compliance. Customers have welcomed the certification of fibres and we are committed to supporting the sustainable management of forests based on responsible forest management,

social responsibility and economic viability. We also encourage the development of standards, performance measures, and continual improvement in best practices for forest ecosystems. We use the definition of ‘Sustainable Forest Management’ agreed at the Second Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe, held in Helsinki in 1993: “The stewardship and use of forests and forest lands in a way and at a rate that maintains their biodiversity, productivity, regeneration capacity, vitality and their potential to fulfil now and in the future, relevant ecological, economic and social functions at local, national and global levels, and that does not cause damage to other eco-systems.” ETS has particularly welcomed the new EU Timber Regulation which came into force in 2013 and ensures that only products from legally sourced wood are sold across the EU28. The members of ETS have for some years committed to using only fibres from legal and sustainable sources.

Exploring opportunities in recycling and recovery Europe leads the world in paper recycling with levels at over 70% in 2012 – up from 40% in 1995. While paper consumption levels are the same today as in 1998, recycling levels are 150% higher. In Europe, a paper fibre is collected and recycled on average 3.5 times, compared with just 2.4 times worldwide. ETS are members of the European Recovered Paper Council,

Total environmental impacts depend on a number of factors including location of the mill, closeness of available fibres, energy options and production waste utilisation and these should be reviewed on a case by case basis. It is for this reason that we advocate a total lifecycle approach to understand the environmental impact of our products. We are not in favour of carbon footprint labelling for our products as it measures just one environmental impact and so can be potentially misleading for consumers. However we are following with great interest the EU project to establish Product and Organisation environmental footprints as these should encompass all the environment impacts and overcome the weakness in carbon footprinting. Thanks to sophisticated new technologies the tissue industry increasingly uses recycled fibres in products without compromising on softness, strength and absorbency. Companies are innovating using recycled fibres or environmentally friendly fibres from plants that grow well and are able to offer products that are similar to virgin fibre ones. The very latest development is that industry leaders are actively exploring opportunities to recycle paper towels. Research is ongoing but could lead to some exciting breakthroughs for our industry in contributing to Europe’s status as paper recycling world champion.

Driving waste minimization The most effective way to recover used materials is to not generate waste in the first place. A great deal of work is being

January 2014

31

pressideas/ plc

undertaken in paper mills across Europe to minimize wastage - in the production processes, in the cutting of the paper, and in the way machinery and forklifts are used. Efforts seek to minimise damage and hence wastage in the handling of tissue products and the industry is also developing more absorbent products which hence reduce usage. Conservation of water is a key global concern and companies in the tissue sector increasingly operate fully closed production loops to reuse water – although they have to evaluate whether this is the most costefficient option in the more water abundant countries of northern Europe.

Upholding sustainability in the workplace Safety in the workplace is a fundamental prerequisite of sustainability – and a legal and ethical obligation. Upholding optimal safety is rooted in respect and if employees believe that management is placing safety as a number one priority then they will be motivated and work well. The result is a virtuous circle for a company’s prosperity. The implementation of values and practices that guarantee optimal safety standards is rooted in the psyche of not just the tissue industry but of its main suppliers too and we are proud of the safety standards that we uphold.

So what’s next for the tissue sector? Trade customers and consumers are increasingly aware of the need to save and conserve. They are particularly keen on packaging reduction and industry members have taken a number of initiatives to make products more compact. This pleases retailers as they take up less space on-shelf in store, and pleases customers as they are less bulky to store at home. Larger rolls twice the length of a standard roll – which save on packaging, transport and storage costs, have been available for a number of years too and are now being extended more widely including into private label ETS has also undertaken transport studies to look at truck utilisation and content optimisation in order to be more economic and energy efficient. And the industry hasn’t stopped there. We also look at recycled plastics for the outer wrappings to ensure

32

January 2014

that every stage of the production chain is conscious of the impact it has on the environment. Looking to the future our industry will continue to push the boundaries in reutilisation techniques and even surpass some of the excellent work that is being done today. I believe we will develop ever more efficient and effective paper production and converting technology and perhaps machines will be more compact so located closer to the final customer. I would also hope that we will work to further limit our energy waste, promote renewable sources and reduce the miles travelled by our products. Some promising new work is taking place in the area of wind energy generation already with wind turbines being cited in forests on the tops of hills where they are away from people and in low-yield locations. My dream of course is that future innovations will provide the planet with unlimited quantities of low cost, low impact energy. This would enable us to develop the ideal

toilet roll: soft, absorbent, resistant, very long, pleasantly decorated, made with recycled fibres and at a price that is accessible to the vast majority of people. I am excited about what we have achieved so far in driving the principles of sustainability throughout our sector. And I am optimistic about the future and where innovation and a determination to do even better can lead us. But we are not complacent. The European tissue industry is committed to helping people to achieve a better quality of life by delivering optimal hygiene that supports human health. Unless we are able to improve, or at the very least uphold our standards of excellent, then we cannot justify the term ‘sustainable’. ETS is the European Tissue Paper Industry Association. The members of ETS represent the majority of tissue paper producers throughout Europe and around 90% of the total European tissue production. ETS was founded in 1971 and is based in Brussels.

Award-winning label from Stratus Packaging protects your pin code Fraudsters are ever more resourceful in finding new ways to gain access to pin code numbers – but Stratus Packaging Group’s patented solution brings a whole new dimension to scratch-off pin code label security. Awarded a prize for innovation in the FINAT International Label Competition, Stratus Packaging’s IXcode label employs a novel variation on the system involving silver inks over the printed pin number which the customer needs to scratch off to display the pin. Often employed today by banks, this system lays itself open to pin code theft through, for example, heating the scratch-off inks to make the number visible.

As winner of a major category prize in the self-adhesive label industry’s annual FINAT International Label Competition, the IXcode has received extensive recognition across Europe, North America, and further afield.

Such activity is not possible with the Stratus Packaging IXcode. It is centred on making a substantial change to the structure of the label laminate that contains the pin number and anchors it to the base document. One of the laminate components constitutes a stretchable ‘tongue’, which is then covered by tiny particles of black ink. By stretching the tongue, the customer can make the pin number appear as the tiny ink particles are dispersed and disappear. The stretchable material, however, will not shrink back to its original state, and cannot be replaced, so ready evidence of tampering is available to the customer. The complex laminate –

New flexible roller former minimizes

product waste Bosch is launching its WRF 600 Flex roller former, which optimizes or eliminates the trim when processing bar masses, including cereal, candy, protein and fruit. As a result, less product is wasted, helping decrease production costs and contribute to faster return on investment (ROI). The smooth slab former offers a flexible working width and allows for an easy, stepless and tool-free adjustment for precise cutting to produce different sizes. Unlike other machines of its kind available in the market, Bosch’s WRF 600 Flex enables width changes without production stoppages, maximizing uptime and output. This also allows for maximum product usage as product is not wasted due to stoppages, contributing to faster ROI. In addition, manufacturers benefit from a hygienic design and easy tool-less cleaning.

Seamless bar line generates high OEE Bosch will conduct live presentations of its highspeed bar packaging system at Interpack. The line is capable of reaching speeds up to 1,500 bars per minute and is designed as a single, seamless system helping confectionery manufacturers to maximize production and meet increasing demands for bars. The speed of all components in the line is balanced

to eliminate bottlenecks, minimize downtime and optimize production flow, facilitating high OEE. The primary packaging technology of the bar line on display at the show comprises the Sigpack DCI product distribution station and the Sigpack HRM horizontal flow wrapping machine with automated precision splicer. These machines can be integrated with the Sigpack TTM toploader and the Elematic 3001 case packer to create a complete system designed specifically for the primary, secondary and end-of-line packaging of bars and bar-shaped products.

Pack Feeder 4 infeed system enhances efficiency With Bosch’s recently launched non-contact product distribution station Transver SDP and the Pack Feeder 4 infeed system, bar manufacturers can increase efficiency. The sophisticated full product inspection of the Pack Feeder 4 detects misaligned products in order to be rejected. As a result, machine stops are minimized and productivity is increased. Depending on the product being packaged, the feeding system can be optionally equipped with side belts for optimal product positioning and stability, enhancing reliable and efficient bar packaging. The low-pressure design allows for gentle product handling. With its reliability and robustness, the Pack Feeder 4 can be operated 24/7. Thanks to the modularity and standardized interfaces, the feeding system can be easily integrated with Bosch’s flow wrapper portfolio. At Interpack, it will

be showcased with the Pack 401 horizontal flow wrapper, now available with a narrower cutting head enabling higher packaging speeds for heat seal applications.

Case packer newly designed for increased safety and efficiency After making its European debut at FachPack 2013, the Elematic 3001 case packer will have its global launch with Interpack. It handles a variety of pack styles, including tray, classic full wrap-around and two-part, shelf-ready packaging. This flexibility is ideal for manufacturers supporting different brands and products. The new ergonomic design and lowered blank magazine make machine operation easier and safer. With the new Elematic 3001, easy and tool-less packaging format changeovers are realized thanks

to the intuitive “Elematic click system.” When parts lock into place, a click sound indicates the successful format changeover. Manufacturers benefit from higher efficiency as this eliminates time-consuming finetuning and avoids errors while using scales. Compared to previous models, Bosch further enhanced the Elematic’s hygienic design. With fewer components, the frame has an open design and is easily accessible. Horizontal surfaces and corners have been avoided and corrosion-resistant materials, such as stainless steel, anodized aluminum or brass, are used. The technologies will be on display at Interpack 2014, Duesseldorf, Germany from May 8 to 14 in hall 6, booth A31 – C58.

Product innovation makes recycling easier Tetra Pak has launched Tetra Top with Separable Top, an innovation that enables consumers to detach the plastic top from the carton sleeve, allowing them to be recycled separately. Consumers can easily separate the plastic top from the sleeve with a simple thumb

press, thanks to the pre-cut perforation on the outer layer of the cardboard. This is achieved without affecting the functionality of the Tetra Top package. “The innovation of Tetra Top Separable Top is a response to consumers increasing demand for better solutions to facilitate recycling, especially where waste management infrastructure calls for it,” says Charles Brand, Vice President Marketing and Product Management at Tetra Pak. Tetra Top is a package that combines the convenience of a bottle with the contemporary look and feel of a carton package. It is suitable for chilled products and ambient still drinks “at home and on-the-

go”. The option of Separable Top is made available for customers at no additional cost. Arla Foods in Denmark and Sweden has already introduced Tetra Top with Separable Top into its product range. “It was very well received by all our key stakeholders,” says Ann Bergman, Senior Manager Marketing & Brand yoghurt and fermented at Arla Foods Sweden. “Over 80% of consumers appreciated the possibility to be able to separate the top and 77% said that they would recycle more. We now have over 35 product variants in the Yoggi and Arla range with Tetra Top with Separable Top on the Swedish market. For us it was a great benefit to be able to launch without adding cost.”

Mobile Phone Indoor Positioning Systems reinvented to create a $10 billion market IDTechEx Research report Mobile Phone Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) and Real Time Locating Systems (RTLS) 2014-2024. Indoor positioning systems (IPS) is a term confined to indoor positioning presented on mobile/cell phones, or the like, to create added value services. For example, the derivatives of smart phones taking the form of glasses or eyepieces will have the ability to superimpose all manner of information across the items being viewed. For example, thanks to the work of US companies APX Labs, Vuzix and others, a service engineer might see “preventative maintenance due now” superimposed on their view of a machine in a factory. Position is known in 3D thanks to IPS often combined with real time locating systems (RTLS) by which second generation RFID tags are interrogated by several readers at a time to give location. That technology is usually different from IPS which seeks ubiquity before accuracy and therefore will use known location of Bluetooth and WiFi emitters and dead reckoning (inertial navigation) using the gyroscope, barometer and accelerometer in the typical smart phone. Linking RTLS and IPS gives powerful facilities that can revert to satellite navigation outdoors when the phone, smart glasses or whatever are outdoors. From consumers to emergency services and even surgeons, the uses will be many and varied. IDTechEx assesses that a $10 billion addressable market awaits. Whereas IPS is only now starting to be widely deployed commercially, Hewlett Packard is servicing an RTLS order for $543 million from the US veterans’ hospital group with IBM the unsuccessful bidder. This order was 100 times the size of the previous record order for RTLS. Indeed, IDTechEx forecasts $4.8 billion in RTLS sales worldwide in 2024.

Survey of 74 case studies of RTLS by application (Source: IDTechEx report “Mobile Phone Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) and Real Time Locating Systems (RTLS) 2014-2024”)

Rather different large companies are clashing over IPS, such as Apple, Microsoft Sony and Google because it will be a source of competitive advantage and of extra earning streams in the mobile phone and similar industries. They also foresee it in their planned smart watches. RTLS is even finding its way into wearable electronics having started with the ubiquitous pendants that track hospital staff and give their coordinates when they press the button for assistance. Cadi Scientific of Singapore and Harmonic Group of South Africa are new RTLS suppliers alongside US companies RF Technologies, Zebra Technologies and other incumbents. Axcess International, a leading RFID/RTLS system supplier puts it this way: “Across the globe and among many industries active RFID/RTLS technology has evolved far beyond the days of barcodes in retail. Lives are being saved, businesses are innovating at the speed of light, and automation of ev-

erything has become the de facto standard. RFID/RTLS technology and sensor networks are delivering critical data in multiple types of environments far beyond the enclosed, wired limitations of yesterday. U.S. businesses absorb $40 billion per year in lost productivity and increased costs because crucial process and environmental data is not effectively captured and analyzed. Fortunately, that is changing. With the innovation of RFID/RTLS technology and wireless sensing capabilities, you can automatically relay real-time information that was previously unattainable and use it to improve efficiencies, maximize security, and minimize risk.” In its 267 pages the unique IDTechEx report “Mobile Phone Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) and Real Time Locating Systems (RTLS) 2014-2024” analyses and forecasts all this in 72 tables and figures. OMET and ASAHI, a cooperation lasting for more than 10 years Asahi Photoproducts’ AWP is the first case of flexouniversal photopolymer, suitable for use with any type of ink, and developed with water-based solution instead of solvent. AWP photopolymer is of the latest generation and is result of the most recent research, and Asahi company’s flagship product for the years to come. As main feature, it ensures the highest print quality through “Ink Pinning”, i.e. the inherent capacity to carry all the ink captured by the polymer on the substrate. Ink Pinning allows to reduce waste, avoid the accumulation of ink on the surface of the plate and lower drastically downtimes for cleaning purposes. The AWP plate has been engineered and the resulting Ink Pinning has a direct relation with the last generation chemical component of the polymer, in combination with the surface

tension of the plate. When a drop of liquid is placed on any surface, the way it expands on it depends on the ratio between the energy present on the area and the surface tension of the liquid: if the relevant tension of the liquid is greater than the one of the contact surface, the liquid forms globules and does not wet the area. This contact point is called “pinning point”, or contact angle; the higher is this point the more easily the ink will not wet the contact surface and will move in its entirety onto the print media. From the point of view of the printing result, the print uniformity and density is increased with an unprecedented precision (reduced dot gain). The chemical process, in addition, allows to achieve excellent results even in presence of lower printing pressures and a guaranteed plate thickness tolerance. Since the cleaning is performed with a water-based solution, the

nominal thickness of the AWP photopolymer is never altered, ensuring a longer life to the plate. Asahi cooperates with Numaber and relies on OMET as a manufacturer of presses for the final print testing. Flexo plates equipped with AWP system were used on the XFlex X4 by OMET during the recent Labelexpo Europe where it was possible to witness live the benefits of the system. Asahi Photoproducts Europe, located in Italy, Germany, France and Great Britain, is part of the Asahi Kasei Group Corporation founded in Japan in 1931 and one of the leading chemical companies in the Asian market with over 28,000 employees. The Asahi Photoproducts branch deals with the production and sale of flexo plates and liquid polymers.

ETI Converting Equipment obtains a new patent ETI Converting Equipment, a Canadian company based in Montreal, just received a patent (PATENT NUMBER 2,788,206) to apply self-adhesive linerless labels without any compromise on the shape of the label. This labeling machine, using a reusable liner, is the successful solution to apply linerless labels without making marketing compromises on the final packaging. The technology, developed by ETI and described in this patent, allows users to dramatically reduce the waste resulting to the use of a liner in a self-adhesive label construction. A film liner is used as a carrier to allow the diecutting of the label and then, reused many times with other linerless facestock rolls. According to ETI project managers, the liner can be reused more than 20 times. This efficient process gives ETI customers a considerable advantage because it allows the user to achieve significant savings on raw material. Since a year, Pragati Pack, a label converter in India, acts as a distributor of this system.

Call for entries for 26th DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation DuPont Packaging has recently announced the call for entries in the 26th DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation, the industry’s longest running, independently judged competition. The awards program returns for a new year with refreshing changes that reflect current trends in the packaging industry. The deadline for entries is March 1, 2014. “The DuPont Packaging Awards honour packaging innovations that use science, in-

spiration, and creativity to shift the paradigms and change the way we live. As we enter the next quarter century of celebrating packaging, we believe we need to evolve with the industry,” said Yasmin Siddiqi, marketing director, DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers, DuPont Packaging Awards program leader. “Our past awards categories have been upgraded to reflect future global challenges and the increasingly important role of the consumer in driving packaging innovation.” The new judging categories for the 26th DuPont Awards include technological advancement, responsible packaging, and enhanced user experience. “The global packaging industry is experiencing a transition from disruptive packaging innovation to solutions-based innovation,” said David Luttenberger, CPP, president, David Luttenberger Consulting LLC, who is this year’s lead juror. “The 2014 edition of the DuPont Packaging Awards will honour unique and beneficial packaging technologies, while at the same time embrace the future-forward ideas and innovations that are solving real

needs for retailers, brand owners and especially consumers.” Brand owners, retailers, packaging designers, converters, and technology providers from around the world are encouraged to enter new packaging that has been commercialized since Jan. 1, 2012. There is no fee for entry and DuPont materials do not need to be in the packaging structure. In evaluating entries, judges will consider excellence in these areas: technological advancement, responsible packaging, and enhanced user experience. Winners will be announced in May 2014. DuPont Packaging & Industrial Polymers manufactures an extensive mix of adhesive, barrier, peelable lidding and sealant resins and provides a globally networked development team to work with customers on packaging programs that help protect the product, environment; improve shelf appeal, convenience; and reduce cost in the food, cosmetics, medical products and other consumer goods and industrial packaging industries.

Heimtextil 2014 Impressive panorama of designer textiles and technical innovations.

Heimtextil, the global trade fair for home and contract textiles, presented an impressive panorama of textile design in Frankfurt am Main. From 8 to 11 January 2014, 2,718 exhibitors from all over the world showed the latest colour, pattern, material and technology trends. Overall, the trend to more colour was obvious with expressive tones, such as petrol, fuchsia, lime, honey, turquoise and royal blue to be seen at the fair. Often, these shades are combined with white, crème or grey to avoid making a loud impression. In the case of finer fabrics, the colours are frequently tone-intone while a mixture of matt and lustrous yarns gives many fabrics an interesting look. New at Heimtextil was a trend towards patterns with a contrasting dark background in anthracite, mocha or black.

Attractive designs for every taste “With its unique spectrum of products, Heimtextil gave the international sector a comprehensive overview of the latest trends and innovations. Product designers and visitors interested in trends were able to gain lots of inspiration for the new furnishing season”, says Olaf Schmidt, Vice President Textiles & Textile Technologies, Messe Frankfurt.

Key Notes : > The trends: lively colours, shimmering lustre, Baroque inspirations. > Digital printing opens up new design opportunities. > The next Heimtextil in Frankfurt am Main will be held from 14 to 17 January 2015.

They top the hit list of decorative elements for fabrics: flowers and blossoms of every kind and size, from a scattering of tiny little flowers to big picturesque blossoms à la Andy Warhol. Animal motifs are still to be found on many decorative fabrics and pillow cases. Delicate creatures, such as butterflies, beetles and dragonflies, are conquering the world of home textiles against competition from imaginative Baroque

designs, such as arabesques or médaillons, and classic border decorations, many of them slightly modified or blurred, but all in generally modern, contemporary shades. More and more products have relief-like, structured surfaces, from fine rep to cloqué fabrics. Many of the decorative fabrics at Heimtextil were offered together with transparent fabrics in matching colours and patterns. Praiseworthy newcomers are decorative black-out fabrics that are also available for crèches and kindergartens and, of course, comply with the latest safety regulations.

Stylishly covered armchairs and sofas The cover fabrics presented at the fair were distinguished by great variety. Particularly numerous were collections with matching small patterns, which are suitable for combining as suites or using for decorative cushions. A large part of the fabrics have relief-like surfaces (ribs, rhombuses, carrés, circles, floral decorations), which lend character to monochrome fabrics. Gaining ground are artificialleather fabrics for upholstery or wall coverings. They are smooth, monochrome and represent artificialleather imitations or have fashionable, embossed decorative elements. Also gaining in popularity at the fair are decoratively patterned, weather resistant outdoor fabrics for the terrace, balcony or garden.

borders, while carpets with pictographic images were also to be found.

Huge spectrum of poles, tracks and trimmings Curtain poles were to be seen from the elegant side at Heimtextil 2014. They are mainly made of stainless steel, chrome or painted metal and, as a rule, have welldesigned end pieces and brackets. For people with an opulent taste, there are even ends with Swarovski crystals. However, excessively sumptuous products are on the retreat. An increasing number of poles have an internal track for runners and are available with ceiling brackets because, in many modern buildings, there is no room for wall mountings above the window. More rustic poles come in brilliant colours, diameters of up to 55 mm and large blooms as end pieces. Attractive pelmets are offered together with curtain rails. Some of the rails can also be used as picture rails – many can also be fitted in bay windows. Trimmings in many different shades – including modern, monochrome models – can be matched harmoniously with the curtain material used.

Practical and attractive: roller blinds, venetian blinds, vertical and panel blinds

Wall coverings: making walls more attractive This year’s Heimtextil saw a continuation of the triumphal advance by wall coverings. Derided as old fashioned just a few years ago, they have developed into a trendy and extremely desirable design element. And this is hardly surprising because consumers have seen that wall coverings enable them to make significant atmospheric changes to a room with relatively little effort. The spectrum of patterns at the fair was bigger than ever before. They range from fine craquelé motifs, via extraordinarily imaginative geometrical designs and modernised classical motifs, to ethnic art, from wallpaper with enchanting, blurred colourways to big, bright mural-like decors. Incidentally, golden times are coming for walls: many patterns shimmer in gentle shades of gold, silver or copper, which give the wallpaper an aristocratic touch or tongue-in-cheek palace appeal. More and more designs have slight or pronounced

44

January 2014

relief structures and they give the wall a sophisticated plasticity. Frequently, nature is the prototype – in the form of blossoms, vines, bark, stones, wood or crocodile leather. Additionally, some manufacturers use natural yarns on the surface of the product. Water hyacinths and banana leaves were also to be seen. Some Heimtextil exhibitors also offered wall paint to match some of the wall coverings.

Almost too good to walk on Cosy high-pile carpets were as popular as ever at this year’s Heimtextil. In this segment, the colour spectrum was dominated by soft, subdued shades. In contrast, carpets with tufts made of strong wick yarn are very colourful. Still en vogue are carpets with a ‘used look’. They are woven in such a way that they appear to show signs of use. Among the modern patterns, the leading positions are held by geometric motifs, such as stripes, checks, diamonds, waves and

Blinds and sun-protection decorations are tailor made by Heimtextil exhibitors for consumers’ windows. Today, these products come in an infinite variety of fabrics, colours and patterns – from diaphanous voile, via patterned decorative fabrics, to thick blackout material. Modern folding roller blinds are sold in widths and heights of up to 350 cm. Instead of a separate electric motor, a roller

pressideas/ signage

blind can be furled or unfurled by remote control via a battery-powered mechanism in the roller. Because they are also suitable for difficult windows, pleated roller blinds are a hit among tailor-made window decorations. Particularly popular are pleated blinds with honeycomb-like chambers. They form an air buffer, which significantly reduces heat loss in the winter and protects against heat and UV radiation in the summer. Demand is growing for double roller blinds with two rolls of fabric, one behind the other, and alternately light-proof and translucent panels. They permit the view in (or out) and the amount of light passing through to be varied exactly as required. The classic venetian blind is nowadays no less modern with slats in different widths, innumerable colours, painted or made of wood, bamboo or plastic. But whether roller or venetian: many of the blinds shown at Heimtextil 2014 can be run up or down without a bothersome cord simply by touching the lower track. If the blinds do have cords, recent child-protection regulations forbid dangling loops. Instead, the cords must be held tightly or come away if subjected to a load of six kilograms or more. Today, there is no doubt about the

suitability of vertical and panel blinds for the home thanks to the wide range of decorative colours and patterns now available.

Digital printing: technology with a future An increasing proportion of fabric and wallpaper patterns are produced using digital

printing technology, which is particularly suitable for big pattern repeats, realistic reproduction, rapid implementation and both big and small quantities. Photos, sketches or even the corporate design can be used as the design master. As was to be seen at Heimtextil, printed home textiles have now developed into an important area of growth for the textile industry whereby the

focus of digital-printing companies is on curtains, drapes and bed and table linen. For this work, manufacturers can choose from a growing range of new technologies, processes and production methods. The digital printing machines to be seen at the fair permit not only a new spectrum of textile designs with almost millions of different shades possible. Other advantages of the equipment, which is already changing the European apparel sector, include flexibility, speed and production customisation. Today, new collections with individual designs can be produced and delivered within two weeks.

Decorative fabrics for the bathroom Bathroom textiles were also more colour conscious at Heimtextil 2014 than in the previous year. In the terry-goods segment,

46

January 2014

shades such as China red, meadow green, ultramarine and gold bring the colour spectrum to life. Also popular are tranquil tones, such as old rose, pistachio green and mauve. There has been a significant increase in the number of collections with more masculine colours, such as light grey, stone grey, anthracite, night blue and black. Hand towels have pronounced structures, are decorated with narrow solid-stripes, as well as with check, ivy and border designs. Matching bathroom textiles are also available, e.g., soft and cosy bath mats with pile of up to 45 mm. Increasingly to be seen in the collections are bathrobes in matching colours. Indeed, some manufacturers even offer toothbrush tumblers, soap dishes, small waste bins and shower curtains in the colours and / or patterns as their terry products.

What applies to decorative fabrics also holds good for bed linen: floral motifs are ‘in’. Duvet and pillow covers are strewn with petals, romantic flowers and bouquets. Or large, brightly coloured flowers with long stems lay across the fabric. Alongside them are stripes of all kinds – from colourful fusions for the ‘young bed’ to elegant, tone-in-tone satin stripes. Classic and traditional motifs, such as paisley, ikat and modernised Baroque ornaments, are en vogue again. Cheerful, eye-catching motifs from the animal world include swallows and butterflies. New is the combination of two sets of bed-linen with completely different yet matching designs. Monochrome bed linen is to be found in a variety of qualities, from the finest piqué to robustly structures cloqué, with hemstitch decoration, Oxford edging, with braiding or cording and buttons in contrasting colours. Striking in the case of covers is the widespread use of knitted fabrics and tonein-tone patterns.

Sprucing up the dining table Gone are the times when the dining table was set primarily with practical utensils and only made to look fine on high days and holidays. Today, table linen for everyday use is also distinguished by attractive, homelike designs. Floral splendour is in evidence in this segment, too, as are decorations comprising big circles or intricate line decorations, in many cases on semitransparent fabrics – the more elegant, the quieter the shades. To match the table cloths, runners, placemats and napkins, there are pillow cases, aprons and even panel curtains – with the same pattern or monochrome. Alongside this range are numerous designs in country-house style and – for the more elegant household – luxurious table cloths, placemats and napkins in wonderful plain fabrics. In this segment, linen is the successful climber of the season. Kitchen towels are characterised by less elaborate, less kitschy designs. Thus, tea towels with classic white & blue and white and red checks, as well as the ‘Grubentuch’, a traditional German miner’s towel, made their comebacks at Heimtextil 2014. From Asia, there were attractive accessories for the well-set dining table including napkins and jam-jar covers with hand-embroidered fruit and vegetable motifs.

Arrow Digital launches the Tecglass Ceramic Digital Printer for the Glass Industry Tecglass is one of the leading companies that design and develop a range of innovative digital printers that apply high quality images & designs directly onto glass. The printers contain the latest 8 colour ceramic inkjet heads, 6 regular and 2 optional channels for special effects. The new optional colours include pure magenta, platinum, anti-skid, pantone, RAL, frosted/ acid etch etc. This machine is suitable for all indoor & outdoor applications and largescale architectural projects. Tecglass is available in 2 models – the Vitrojet CR and Vitrojet MT. The Vitrojet prints on glass from widths 2.4m to 12m,with a print resolution of 1440 x 720 dpi and an immense print speed of up to 90 m2/hr. The major difference between the Vitrojet CR and Vitrojet MT is that the MT has a moving table to carry the glass for the entire process, whereas the CR has a suction cup technology to lift the glass. These printers have a patented ink recirculation system called the Tecglass ink flow technology (TIFT) that saves time, ceramic ink and keeps the print heads ready to fire as per need. The Tecglass printing process is swift &

efficient, and has a few short steps - image processing, cleaning the glass, digital printing, drying, tempering and additional finishing. Tempering the glass at 620-650 degrees celsius after printing is a significant step as ceramic ink cures at this temperature and the ink becomes part of the glass. This ensures that the print lasts a lifetime.

In this day and age, most companies have to compete in an increasingly globalized market place and are thus looking for innovative technologies to help them surge ahead of competition. The latest ceramic glass printing technology incorporated in this printer by Arrow and Tecglass enables its users gain competitive advantage in glass printing.
