i-managerPrinting Press had been successfully running their Autoprint Dion 250 and as business grew when they decided to upgrade to a 4-colour machine. “We had a choice between imported make and Autoprint,” says Renisha Winston, Director, i-manager Publications. “Our experience with Autoprint has been great. We had a satisfactory customer service from Autoprint for the earlier machine; the improved features of Dion 450+; the compactness of the machine; and the attractive pricing altogether made us decide in favour of Autoprint Dion 450+,” she adds. i-manager is into publishing of Academic Journals in diverse streams, for which Dion 450+ perfectly
complements their business. “Right from the size of paper, we feel that this was a better choice, as cost of production is minimized in all aspects, ROI, space, labour, power etc. It is a general misconception that only larger machines could leverage production. When we compare the cost factor, this works out better,” explains Renisha.
Autoprint Dion 450+ stands out Though the choice for i-manager was obvious with Autoprint Dion 450+ Vs. imported machines, Renisha still thinks Dion 450+ stands out from competition. “We didn’t explore much in the Indian markets, as the choice was only between imported machines Vs. Autoprint. But I think Dion 450+ stands out in terms of the pricing and features,” she declares. It has been an investment of around Rs.50 lakhs constituting the Dion 450+ installation along with the production unit for the printing press for i-manager which, apart from this, also houses a Binding machine. Besides publishing academic journals, i-manager also carries out commercial printing for academic institutions, corporate and other type of printing jobs for the local market.
“The Product offering in the commercial printing segment include – brochures, catalogues, flyers, pamphlets, calendars, visiting cards etc. We also do a sizeable amount of wedding cards, invitation cards etc.,” says Renisha. After the recent Autoprint Dion 450+ installation, i-manager is having enhanced experience. “The quality of printing has improved considerably after the Autoprint Dion 450+ installation. We are getting repeat customers and referral customers as Customer Satisfaction has been met. The overall experience with Autoprint – the Dion 450+ and the earlier Dion 250 – has been good,” reveals Renisha. What attracted
Renisha most about the Dion 450+ was the compactness of the machine which came with all the required features. “The Print quality of the machine has helped us to get traction in the local market. Moreover, our customers too have benefitted by faster and timely delivery and better printing quality,” she asserts.
since they will be using their Dion 450+ for answering short-run demands as well.
The present turnover of i-manager group is around Rs.1.5 crores which, with their new installation, they plan to increase to touch Rs.2 crores next year. The plans to add a single colour machine and a perfect cutting machine will be materialized soon, according to Renisha. She doesn’t feel the need to enter the digital printing segment soon,
Renisha Winston sums up their investment in the Autoprint Dion 450+ as, “A Good Investment at the right time!” Leaving aside a few teething problems that a new installation generally has, she is a proud Autoprint Dion 450+ owner. “We are proud of our latest Autoprint. The machine met all our needs and came out above our expectations,” she concludes.
Their experience with both Dion as well as Autoprint people has been pleasant. “They are highly professional and their customer service is good,” says Renisha, who expects an ROI of 3 years for their Dion 450+.
Fifth joint calendar project by ACTEGA Terra and KBA “Under the deep blue sea” unites high quality print finishing and digital media for first time Coating manufacturer ACTEGA Terra, KBA-Sheetfed Solutions, Sappi and Rudolf Reproflex have joined forces to create a calendar for 2016. The highly finished, large-format monthly calendar titled “Under the deep blue sea” displays fascinating underwater scenes and simultaneously unites print with the online world. This new approach delivers added value while at the same time creating a meaningful symbiosis between digital and print media. The title page sparkles with the first highlight: extraordinary 3D effects with an impressive perception of depth are rendered with the unique application of the magnetic special coating from ACTEGA Terra on a transparent protective film. The coating contains metallic effect pigments that can be aligned magnetically by means of a special magnetic foil on the impression cylinder. Various types of finishing with water-based and UV coating, including drip-off, matt/gloss, pearlescent gloss, cold foil and metallic effects as well as combinations of these can be seen on
all of the following 12 monthly pages. The sophisticated calendar was printed and finished on a Rapida 105 PRO with six inking units, twin coaters and ColdFoil Infigo SF 110 cold-foil module in the KBA-Sheetfed training centre. This is what makes the calendar so unique: every sheet is linked via a QR code to a microsite developed by ACTEGA Terra and KBA (www.calendar-insights.com/en/). Further information about the individual pictures can be found here as well as on the finishing technique used. Users can find out what production steps are necessary for creating the individual finishing types, and also which coatings were used. Short, clear video clips inform users about the steps involved in producing the individual images. What is more, interactive animations show the colour separations and coating formes used. The calendar and respective website thus build the ideal platform for finishing experts and printers who have yet to fully get to grips with inline finishing technology. Information on the KBA Rapida 105 PRO
rounds off the process technical contents and contributes in this way to an almost playful transfer of knowledge on details regarding how the calendar was produced. 3,500 copies of the “Under the deep blue sea” calendar were produced exclusively for customers and partners of the companies that worked together to create it. No further copies are available. This year’s calendar is already the fifth to be produced as part of a joint project by ACTEGA Terra and KBASheetfed. While a highlight of past calendars were aerial pictures, now the focus has been turned to the fascinating underwater world.

Major order from Sweden – print shop invests €13 million Biggest part is comprehensive product, service, and consumables package from Heidelberg Swedish print shop Atta.45 based near Stockholm decided to make the biggest investment in its relatively short history. Production operations in the new building to which the company relocated in April last year benefit from a comprehensive package comprising new equipment, services, and consumables worth a total of over €13 million. The biggest part of the solution was installed by Heidelberg.
When Atta.45 started out in 1999, it had 12 employees and most of its machines were from Heidelberg. The company is now one of the largest print shops in Sweden, employing a workforce of 115 and generating sales of over €22 million in 2015.
Key Notes : > New pressroom systematically equipped with two Speedmaster XL 106 presses, a Speedmaster XL 162, a Suprasetter 162, a Stahlfolder TX 96, and one Stitchmaster ST 500 saddlesticher. >

“We’re keen to continue growing in the future, so we needed more space, better logistics, and the most cutting-edge equipment available on the market at present,” explains Managing Director Erik Mauritzon. “We’ve enjoyed an excellent relationship with Heidelberg from the outset and obtain everything from a single source – extremely productive machines together with fast, tried-and-tested services that maximize their availability and perfectly coordinated consumables that deliver optimum print results,” he adds. The two highly productive Speedmaster XL 106 eight-colour perfecting presses – one achieving a speed of 18,000 sheets per hour and the other 15,000 sheets per hour with a coating unit – have been in operation for a few months now. The Speedmaster XL 162 eight-colour perfecting press was taken into service in fall 2015 after no fewer than 26 trucks made the journey from Wiesloch-Walldorf to Järfälla site. Other new acquisitions include the Suprasetter 162 CtP platesetter, the Stahlfolder TX 96 folding machine, and one Stitchmaster ST 500 saddlestitcher. When Atta.45 started out in 1999, it had 12 employees and most of its machines were from Heidelberg. Over the years, it has always invested in the latest equipment. The company is now one of the largest print shops in Sweden, employing a workforce of 115 and generating sales of over €22 million in 2015. It prints for regional companies in the Greater Stockholm area. Magazines in shorts runs account for a third of products, traditional commercial jobs such as flyers and brochures 40 percent, annual reports 10 percent, and digital printing the rest. The average run per job is around 3,000 sheets. Some 400 different titles are printed for magazines alone, with four to ten issues each year. “That makes machine makeready times extremely important to us. We currently perform around three
job changes per hour,” reveals Production Manager Tomas Reinhed. “That’s why we appreciate the high productivity of the Speedmaster XL presses, all of which are equipped with the AutoPlate XL automatic plate changer and the InpressControl 2 inline measuring unit that controls and monitors color and register. I’m also impressed by the very high quality of the perfecting presses and their stability in production,” he continues. A technical highlight of the Speedmaster XL 162 is the double gripper system in the delivery. No sheet brakes are required, which saves a great deal of paper and results in stable delivery with excellent stacking.
Optimum materials and reliable service A 36-month service agreement has also been concluded and all three presses plus the CtP system are connected to Remote Service. The fiveyear contract for Fujifilm CtP plates – exclusively distributed by Heidelberg Sweden – covers a total of just under 500,000 m2 and ensures reliable planning, costs, and deadlines. “Our aim is for further growth to come primarily from short-run magazines, but we’re also looking to combine jobs from different customers on mixed forms and move into the web-to-print sector,” says Mauritzon, outlining the future strategy. “All three presses, especially the large-format machine, are designed for this. We mainly use the latter for products with multiple pages, such as 72- or 80-page magazines. This means we have just two signatures for postpress operations instead of the five with the 70 x 100 format,” he explains. The company is also planning to add inks and blankets from the Saphira range to its existing consumables. In addition, it has already reserved a space and laid the foundations for another large-format press.

Komori presents Aspirations for 2016 The management philosophy and realization of customer Kando will be Komori’s goal in the New Year.
The global economy is still on a course of low growth. The U.S. economy is maintaining an underlying recovery trend based on strong personal consumption, and European countries are showing signs of a turnaround. Supported by the economic recovery in Europe and the U.S., Japan is forecast to have a modest recovery. However, in China, which is aiming for a ‘new normal,’ the slowing trend seems very likely to continue. In the printing industry, brisk investment in plant and equipment has been moved forward due to support from subsidies in Japan. Overseas, the markets in Europe and the U.S. are trending toward moderate recovery. Although China is seeing a business slowdown, it remains a very large market, and market growth is also expected in India and the ASEAN region. Amid these economic and industry trends, Komori Corporation will renew its spirit in the pursuit of innovation to drive changes, rather than following them. Komori’s initiatives last year covered many activities, including participation in international exhibitions, new product development, expansion of new businesses, and overseas expansion of our security printing press business. Among them was IGAS 2015 held in Tokyo last September where Komori, under the theme of ‘Open New Pages,’ exhibited a lineup of hardware that included offset presses, digital printing systems, POD systems, and postpress equipment along with software products for the integrated control of these systems as well as K-Supply products that support quality and productivity. Demonstrations featured
proposals of new business models through combinations of these products, thereby creating new values and solutions. The Impremia IS29 digital printing system, in particular, gathered a great deal of attention not only in Japan but also from overseas. Also introduced by the demonstrations were newly developed devices and products, such as the new quality control and productivity enhancement systems for package printing equipped on the Lithrone G40, K-Station 4 Printing Task Control Software that enables real time visualization and sharing of the latest production information, the Komori solution cloud KP-Connect that connects Komori with customers, and the Apressia Series of postpress machines. K-Supply products such as ink, dampening solution, cleaning liquid, cleaning cloth and rollers were not just on display; they were all used to perform demonstrations of H-UV presses. Through the exhibition, Komori enjoyed good recognition of its new position by visitors with its approach toward the comprehensive solution business. Komori at drupa 2016, to be held in Germany from the end of this May, will follow its achievement at IGAS 2015 and showcase an array of products from offset presses, digital printing systems, postpress equipment, print related software, materials and equipment with its proposals of comprehensive solutions to support our customers in improving their profitability. Komori’s printed electronics (PE) and precision machinery business subsidiary, Seria Corporation (formerly Tokai Holdings), started operation of PE Technology Center, its core institution for product development, last November. Seria will enhance its agility in accurately reflecting customer needs in its product development and sales promotion activities. Komori’s security printing machinery
business, having expanded predominantly in the Asian market in the past, enjoyed orders from the Bank of England under the technological cooperation agreement signed with De La Rue International in 2014 and further orders from Poland and U.A.E. As a global manufacturer of printing systems, Komori is committed to providing advanced technologies and services to customers worldwide. In its endeavour to strengthen the global rollout of such support systems, Komori Graphic Center facilities, headed by its headquarters in Japan, were set up in three locations (in the U.S., Europe and China). KGC Europe was recently refurbished into a state-of-the-art showroom with doubled floor space and enhancements in operating capability as well as facilities installed. And we will continue to aim for our management ideal of realizing customer kando and providing solutions that enable us to continue growing with our customers. In 2016, Komori will continue its promotion of business reform as a Print Engineering Service Provider and strive for structural transformation to expand its business areas as well as its range of products and services. We will further strengthen cooperation with the printing industry, pursue customer convenience and support improvement of the profit structure of the entire industry. Our management philosophy, realization of customer Kando, remains our goal in the New Year, and Komori will continue its endeavour of creating solutions for mutual growth. Komori will make every effort to meet your expectations. Best wishes for the New Year.

WAN-IFRA expands innovative gender and media freedom programme to 7 countries in Africa The Women In News (WIN) initiative, a highly regarded editorial leadership programme for African women working in media, launched its sixth year by bringing together 37 women in middle and senior management of newspapers in Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe, as well as a team of coaches and mentors from local markets and abroad. The goal of the project, organised by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), and supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is to help women media professionals, who are under-represented in top management positions, to excel in their careers. “WAN-IFRA aims to close the gender gap in the newsroom by ensuring women with strong leadership skills and passion for the news industry can reach the top positions in news media houses,” said Alison Meston, head of capacity building for Women in News.
“Already with just two days into their first media management training, the participants are saying this is a life-changing course.” The women, meeting in South Africa last week, heard from Bongiwe Mlangeni, of South Africa’s Social Justice Initiative, who told the group that as women in news, they were “not just responsible for editorial leadership, but must view themselves as influencers of their communities.” Ferial Haffejee, editor of City Press, also addressed the group, saying that gender bias in news was made worse by women not being used as sources. “One of the first things I did as an editor was ensure our newsroom had a dedicated women source book, so there was no excuse not to ask for a comment from a woman in finance or politics or health.” Tikhala Chibwana, project director of WIN Africa East said: “There is such a high level of anticipation and excitement amongst the participants to add to their skill sets. I think
this is going to be a productive week.” The WIN programme has partnered with Wits University to deliver a certified training course, where participants can use the certification to further their education towards an honours degree. The South African meeting included sessions and workshops on gender bias in news, social impact reporting, managing diversity in the newsroom, strategies to attract young readers, managing personal finances, project management skills and time management. The initiative also engages the media industry at the global level to sensitize and promote change from within and forms part of WAN-IFRA’s Gender and Media Freedom Strategy. The strategy combines WAN-IFRA’s global experience in running advocacy and development initiatives in support of media freedom and democracy with the first-hand knowledge of the impact gender-based programmes can have on media and society.
QIPC expands activities into labelling and packaging with INTRO International The products of German-based company INTRO International have become part of Q.I. Press Controls (QIPC). QIPC, developer and supplier of measurement & control systems for web offset printing presses, has acquired the assets and the intellectual property of INTRO International. INTRO International develops and supplies optical measuring & control systems to the print industry. However, the German-based family business has a greater focus on narrow web presses and digital printing, as opposed to QIPC, which has hitherto concentrated on web offset printing presses. “Our aim is to expand into digital printing and the labelling and packaging market”, explains Menno Jansen, one of the two directors at QIPC. “Their optical measurement systems are a perfect match for our own products. By furthering the development of their products through our own extensive R&D team, we can bring about greater synergy.”

INTRO International’s products will now be traded under the QIPC-INTRO name and the related website is www.qipc-intro.com. Contact was first established between QIPC and INTRO International in 2013. “Contact between the two companies has always been good and that’s now crystallised into something more tangible,” says INTRO International’s Sascha Eschweiler, who now joins the QIPC team. “From our perspective, as a family-run concern, I see great potential in raising our products to a new level backed by the support and know-how QIPC and Engineering Automation Electronics (EAE). We will certainly benefit enormously from their global sales and service network in increasing the reach of our products,” adds Sascha.
EAE develops control systems for printing presses and is also owned by QIPC. “With the addition of INTRO International and EAE, QIPC is now taking responsibility for a larger share of the production process,” Menno Jansen adds. “This joining of forces offers customers convenience and, as such, the three companies can capitalise collectively on their individual strengths.” http://www.pressideas.com/2016/01/30/ qipc-expands-activities-into-labelling-andpackaging-with-intro-international/

Lithoman addition at Remy-Roto Belgian printing company invests in second commercial printing press from manroland.
The Belgian printing company Remy-Roto, a member of the Rossel Groupe, ordered a 72page Lithoman from manroland web systems in late 2015. Delivery to the Beauraing site is planned for late 2016. Since 2009, a Lithoman has already been performing reliably at this location. Beauraing is a popular Catholic pilgrimage site. However, for printing customers in search of high quality a journey to the small Belgian town is also worthwhile. In the course of restructuring of the Remy-Roto printing house, a freshly ordered 72-page Lithoman from manroland web systems will replace an older 2-1 newspaper/semi-commercial Continent-type press from Koenig & Bauer. The new high-volume rotary press will ring in a new era of increased productivity for the Belgian printing institution, which has been successful on the market since 1905. From 2017 it will employ two Lithoman presses to print renowned magazines such as “Soirmag” (formerly “Soir Magazine”). In addition, the production schedule includes advertising brochures, advertising and newspaper inserts along with flyers.
Absolute market orientation To Pierre Walravens, Rossel Printing and Remy Roto, the new Lithoman press is an investment in the future: “The Lithoman offers us expansion and back-up capacities for the existing press. Currently, the market, which we supply with newspapers and magazines for example, is undergoing some changes. We are counteracting this development with increased flexibility and more efficient manufacturing based on technical innovations, higher speed, and comprehensive automation features.”
Existing machine very satisfactory Remy-Roto is very satisfied with the operational Lithoman. Its reliable performance, quality, and handling are excellent. “The new press is also customized to the needs of Remy-Roto,” explains Lodewijk Salomons, Sales Director of manroland web systems Benelux. “What’s more, both presses have the same operating philosophy and the same processes for their maintenance and spare parts supply. This also facilitates processes for the customer,” said Salomons. The Belgian printers are particularly impressed by the automated
control devices of manroland web systems. This includes the InlineDensity Control (IDC) ink density control and the InlineCutoff Control dynamic (ICCD) cut-off register control. “They are the perfect equipment for cutting down on waste,” Salomons adds.
InlineCutoff Control dynamic InlineCutoff Control dynamic is the fastest cut-off register control available on the market. An additional camera measures and controls the web immediately before the tucker blade cut. The cut is thus carried out precisely, which drastically reduces the cutting waste during reel change or blanket wash-up. In addition, the cut is precisely aligned during proof and production runs, with minimum absolute tolerances. This allows the press to quickly produce ready-forsale print products. The Brussel-based Rossel Group is a family-owned business with more than 100 companies. It is primarily active in Belgium and France. The media business sector of the Group includes, in addition to publishing and printing at five locations, radio and television activities.

The key being MonotechKonica Minolta merger and Xerox’s comeback. For Ricoh, the year brought significant growth in every segment. “We have grown at 60-70 percent last year,” says Sambit Misra. The growth is significant, given the industry average growth of around 5 percent. Despite this growth, the profitability for Ricoh has dropped. The reasons for this drop, according to Sambit, have been increased competition, more products as well as diversified demand from the customers. He says that the Digital market seems to be at a stage of bottoming out. “Looking at it with a digital perspective, there is so much which can be done at the lower end of the market which hasn’t been addressed yet,” he says.
Obviously, the machine with white and clear capabilities has far wider range of applications. Above all, it generated a new range of media that no more needed to be ‘only white’. It actually kick started a new market looking for green, black or red etc. papers.” – Sambit Misra, Ricoh India
Key Notes : > Ricoh registers 60-70 percent growth in every segment this year. > Looks at ways to check drop in profitability. > Aims to reach the top in coming two years.

The two main reasons for low profitability have been put as - “It is difficult to keep profitability up because the customers are not ready to change price point due to competition; and the dollar has been hitting us hard.” He sums up the whole last year as one of ‘high growth, less revenues and less profitability’.
Ricoh high-speed engine for high-end Digital print market Ricoh portfolio, over the last two year, has extended to new dimensions. At the start of the year 2015, Ricoh came out with a 5-colour engine. The only 5-colour available with white option in the market then
wasn’t much successful. “Ours was a differentiated product for which we didn’t have to compete with most of the competitor products,” explains Sambit. There were other machines that offered gold and silver capabilities. “Since they too were meant for a totally different market – photographic and marriage albums etc., they were not in direct competition with the Ricoh machine;whereas, ours was a machine with white and clear capabilities and suited to the demands of the corporate market.Obviously, the machine with white and clear capabilities has far wider range of applications.Above all, it generated a new range of media that no more needed to be ‘only white’. It actually kick started a new market looking for green, black or red etc. papers,” he continues. Until recently, Ricoh was not addressing the high-end market. But, with the bringing in of machines with 130 ppm to 150 ppm engines, it has now opened new doors for big-volume market. This big-volume market has largely been answered by machines meant for the VDP market and didn’t met the specific criteria of the Graphic Arts market. With the new launch, Ricoh offers a product which specifically answers the needs of the Graphic Arts market. “The product comes at 1/3rdthe price of popular products, produce excellent colours and has cheaper cost per page,” says Sambit. The first installation of Ricoh 9100 at Surat has been
pressideas/ digital
quite successful. The site has produced 18,00,000 A4 impressions in 40 days. The machine has become a product of choice for printers. “Since they couldn’t log their existing machines for more than 3-3.5 lakh print volumes, now they had a real highvolume machine. They now don’t have to go for multiple units and can just have a single high-volume Ricoh engine,” says Sambit. The machine also offered banner printing option, which was another feature that put it above competitive products. Above all, it was the only machine in the market which could print 400 gsm. “Those markets have high demand for brochure printing which makes it a very attractive solution as a printer of a wide array of substrates,” adds Sambit. This has also opened new avenues for the digital printing, which was not earlier catering to these segments. The segments include customers from the textile and packaging industry. “The packaging customers weren’t satisfied earlier with even up to 350 gsm capabilities. But now with 400 gsm, we have been producing dummies effectively to the full satisfaction of these customers,” claims Sambit. “This demand was answered by UV flatbed machines which have high cost of operation. With this Ricoh machine, however, clients can have multiple dummies at lesser cost,” he adds. Ricoh has also opened up the Photo printing
market. “We are doing fairly good in the photo market. We already have 20 print engines installed. The tie-up with Jindal Photo is also going well. We are also opening up more photographic channels this year,” hints Sambit. Sambit has handled Graphic Arts channels in the Indian market for quite some time and he has gained a lot in understanding the structure thereof. He believes that changing the number game is possible only with reach. “The reach which is possible through indirect channels can’t be possible with recruitment of more people,” he declares, adding, “we aim to be at the top in coming two years. And for that Ricoh India is backed by RicohAsia. We have a large brand backing and the largest direct and indirect sales.” Apart from the challenge of growing Ricoh’s share in the market, Sambit thinks he will also be working towards growing the overall Digital market. For this, he thinks every player will have to contribute in its own way. Ricoh, for the first time, has also brought multiple players on one platform in one such endeavour. It brought in providers of print equipments and finishing devices to promote the concept of ‘going digital and print digital’. Further, Ricoh has also taken a production engine and put the Dicom software to work
on this engine. The Dicom print could till now be printed on paper. Now the customer can decide whether he wants his prints on a film or a paper. This will not only reduce cost of print significantly but also help storage, manage, process and transfer of data through online networking including cloud. “It can bring down the cost of print substantially,” confirms Sambit. “We are targeting the bigger buyer. In our case, the corporate is the biggest buyer. The task at hand is to educate the corporate about the possibilities of Digital printing and concepts of Production Printing. We have to take it to them that how Digital Production Printing can save costs for them and still be better. For this we have to even stretch to print vendors of the corporate,” foresees Sambit. “We have to make it understand to the wider world that ‘you don’t need to print everything today and keep it for the future. Print when you need it’,” he continues. “The amount of print wastage is enormous. It’s unbelievable that we can survive without printing for up to four years if we remove the print wastage we have today. This is where our key focus will be in coming times,” concludes Sambit.

Add More KBA to your day Confident statement for print in a digitalised world
With its drupa slogan the KBA Group underscores its broad technological contribution to the important role of print in an increasingly digitalised world
Print applications are an indispensable part of our daily lives. The Koenig & Bauer Group (KBA) plays a decisive role here with its broad range of technological offerings for various print markets from banknotes, through manifold packaging solutions to magazines and newspapers. This is why “Add More KBA to your day” is the press manufacturer’s slogan for drupa 2016. President and CEO Claus BolzaSchünemann: “Together with our customers we make the world more colourful by transferring ink with a high level of precision onto a raft of everyday products. We wish to back this claim with our drupa motto and our trade fair stand. Today print and digital are increasingly going hand-in-hand.”
Xerox to split into two companies Xerox has made a public announcement that it will be splitting into two publicly traded companies. Amid industry speculations that Carl Icahn influenced the deal, Xerox CEO, Ursula Burns, in an interview clarified that Carl, who will be having three board seats, had nothing to do with the initiation, contemplation, analysis or any discussion around the deal. She insisted that the billionaire investor was not the driving force in the decision. She added that he was in support of it. Xerox initiated a review of its structure and portfolio in October to address changes it saw in the market. Now, as per the recent development, Xerox will be divided into a business process outsourcing operation and a document technology company. Though the position of Burns is yet to be ascertained in the future business, Xerox is in the implementation phase and will decide on the leadership and names of the companies later. The split will allow Xerox to be more flexible and responsive, said Burns. Though she didn’t deny the company fielding any reasonable buyout offer for the two new businesses, she said present plans are to lead both entities to success separately. A large part of the business process outsourcing division would be Affiliated Computer Services, which Xerox purchased for $6.4 billion in 2010. The business Process
outsourcing company will become its own publicly traded company by the end of the year, according to a statement by Xerox. The remaining Xerox, which is Document Technology, will include the hardware that made its name synonymous with photocopying decades ago, like scanners, printers and copy machines. Carl Icahn had lately started amassing a stake in Xerox that reached 8.13 percent by December. The activist investor believed Xerox’s shares were undervalued and pursued discussions with management to improve operational performance and other alternatives that he thought could improve the company’s worth for shareholders. Xerox also announced that it would aim to save $2.4 billion as part of a “strategic transformation program” across all of its segments over the next three years, $700 million of which it expected to be achieved in 2016. Industry experts are already comparing the split with that of HP which separated its computer and printer businesses from its corporate hardware and services operations. Based in Norwalk, Conn., Xerox has more than 140,000 employees worldwide.
KBA 4.0. is the company’s strategy to make its customers even more profitable by taking advantage of increasing digitalisation with new products and services. KBA develops additional potential for added-value from existing digital data. The first results will be unveiled at the trade show. In keeping with the motto “Add more KBA to your day” the company also wants to make the business of printers more comfortable with its expanded service portfolio. The focus here is on performance, reliability, quality and economy. At drupa 2016 the KBA Group will be in its usual place in hall 16 (stand 16C47) presenting new and enhanced products, processes and service offerings on its stand measuring some 3,000m².

Turn waste paper into new paper with Epson office Papermaking System PaperLab promises to revolutionize office recycling by securely destroying documents and turning them into office paper using a dry process. Epson has developed a compact office papermaking system capable of producing new paper from securely shredded waste paper without the use of water. Epson plans to put the new “PaperLab” into commercial production in Japan in 2016, with sales in other regions to be decided at a later date. Businesses and government offices that install a PaperLab in a backyard area will be able to produce paper of various sizes, thicknesses, and types, from office paper and business card paper to paper that is coloured and scented.
PaperLab Features •
•
A developmental prototype of the PaperLab was demonstrated at the Epson booth at Eco-Products 2015 New window, an environmental exhibition that took place at the Tokyo Big Sight.
By employing PaperLab to convert used paper into new, Epson believes that offices of all types will fundamentally change the way they think about paper.
Key Notes : > Just install the PaperLab in the backyard to recycle paper. > High speed production of paper and disposal of waste paper. > Waterless Dry Fibre Technology saves precious water as well.

January 2016
The enduring universal appeal of paper lies in its simplicity as a communication tool. Information on the highly portable and always convenient medium of paper is easy to read, easy to digest, and easy to remember. On the other hand, this essential tool is also produced from a limited resource. Epson has been deeply involved with paper used for its printer products. With PaperLab, Epson aims to give new value to paper, stimulate recycling and change the paper cycle.
•
Office-based recycling process: Ordinarily, paper is recycled in an extensive process that typically involves transporting waste paper from the office to a papermaking (recycling) facility. With PaperLab, Epson is looking to shorten and localize a new recycling process in the office. Secure destruction of confidential documents: Until now enterprise has had to hire contractors to handle the disposal of confidential documents or has shredded them themselves. With a PaperLab, however, enterprise will be able to safely dispose of documents onsite instead of handing them over to a contractor. PaperLab breaks documents down into paper fibers, so the information on them is completely destroyed. High-speed production of various types of paper: PaperLab produces the first new sheet of paper in about three minutes of having loaded it with waste paper and pressing the Start button. The system can produce about 14 A4 sheets per minute and 6,720 sheets in an eight-hour day. Users can produce a variety of types of paper to meet their needs, from A4 and A3 office paper of various thicknesses to paper for business cards, colour paper and even scented paper.

•
Environmental performance: PaperLab makes paper without the use of water. Ordinarily it takes about a cup of water to make a single A4 sheet of paper. Given that water is a precious global resource, Epson felt a dry process was needed.
In addition, recycling paper onsite in the office shrinks and simplifies the recycling loop. Users can expect to purchase less new paper and reduce their transport CO₂ emissions.
ability to produce reliable, durable systems that will operate stably. In addition to these, Epson has developed Dry Fiber Technology without water, a new group of technologies for the PaperLab.
Dry Fiber Technology - fiberizing, binding, and forming •
PaperLab technology Epson’s foundation of compact, energysaving and high-precision technologies enables the company to achieve small, energy-efficient products that offer outstanding accuracy and performance. With printer business operations spanning the consumer, office, commercial and industrial sectors, Epson has an immense storehouse of ink and media expertise, as well as the
•
•
Fiberizing: Using an original mechanism, waste paper is transformed into long, thin cottony, fibers. This process immediately and completely destroys confidential documents. Since the PaperLab does not use water, it does not require plumbing facilities. Just a small amount of water is used to maintain a certain level of humidity inside the system. That, plus its compact size, makes it easy to install in the backyard of an office. Binding: A variety of different binders can be added to the fiberized material to increase the binding strength or
whiteness of the paper or to add colour, fragrance, flame resistance, or other properties needed for a given application. Forming: Users can produce sheets of A4 or A3 office paper and even paper for business cards thanks to forming technology that allows them to control the density, thickness, and size of paper.
Epson aims to help customers increase operational efficiency by providing highspeed, low-power business inkjet printers that deliver images of amazing quality at a low cost per print. And by employing PaperLab to convert used paper into new, the company believes that offices of all types will fundamentally change the way they think about paper. Led by the Japan-based Seiko Epson Corporation, the Epson Group comprises nearly 72,000 employees in 93 companies around the world.

Sree Labeltech installs India’s first 6-colour Etirama Enabled by their latest Etirama Press, V.Rajapandian is confident of creating newer markets for their Labels and delivering his customers faster turnarounds at very competitive price.
“Being a complete Rotary UV Label Press, there is substantial savings on ink usage. Moreover, higher speed of the machine will result in more production and less lead time – customers will get fast deliveries.” – V.Rajapandian

Sree Labeltech, Coimbatore was founded by Mr. V.Rajapandian along with his wife as business partner in the year 1990. The company founded about a quarter of a century ago, for a couple of years, kept marketing Barcode Labels. “We were outsourcing printing of these Labels and then supplying them to our customers in Chennai, Bangalore and a few other nearby districts in Tamil Nadu,” says V.Rajapandian. They would also sell some labeling equipments bought from various sellers in North. “Since supplies from these sources were very erratic we found it very difficult to meet our customers’ demands and so in 1996 we decided to print these Labels ourselves,” says Rajapandian. This was their initiation into Label Printing. It started with a Chinese 5-colour Label Printing machine and printing Barcode and Garment Labels. After around four years, they added another Label Printing machine, a Taiwanese make, which was a high speed machine with inline die-cutting, lamination and hot stamping capabilities. With further addition of machines and expansion business, the need for own premises became imminent and they moved to their present premises in 2008.
business grew, we wanted to install a high speed Label Press and we decided on the Etirama for its unique features.” It is a high speed, all UV rotary, 6-colour press which can ensure production of high quality Labels. “There is less wastage of inks resulting in savings on operational costs. The print quality is better than water based presses. In addition, it has two inline die-cutters and web camera for checking proper registration and quality control,” he continues.
Presently they are having three Flexo Presses including the latest acquisition which is being installed. They have chosen a 6-colour Etirama Superprint Label Press this time. On their recent possession, Rajapandian comments, “As our

The future of Label Printing is UV Rotary technology The state-of-the-art setup of Sree Labeltech caters to Label demands of the retail segments like departmental stores and shops, the garment industry, packaged food industry including marine food and hosiery units etc. Marketing is done by them directly as well as online. Coimbatore is a fast developing market for Labels. “We see tremendous growth in the retail sector as well as in the garment manufacturing industries in the surrounding areas. There is 15 to 20% annual growth in these industries here. That’s a good market for Labels and promise good opportunity as well,” says Rajapandian.

and less lead time – customers will get fast deliveries. For our customers the tangible benefits are high quality auto dispensing labels, lesser rejections and faster delivery at very competitive price,” he explains. So far Sree had been serving the mid and low-end market. But, with the installation of Etirama, Rajapandian intends to shift his focus on new market segments including high-end customers who look for high quality labels. Every other press he evaluated before installing his Etirama, he found them all a way bit too expensive. “All the presses we considered were very expensive. The Etirama rotary UV press that we have installed will serve all our needs and has been well within our budget,” says Rajapandian.

which is the exclusive Sales & Service Partner of Etirama, UV-Tech and Lemarou for India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh. M-Tech is headed by its Director, Mr.Abu. Sree and M-Tech were already having a good relationship. M-Tech recommended Etirama to Sree. The machine was readily accepted as it answered every need of theirs. “We got a good deal. M-Tech Print Solutions is very close to us. When they saw our need for a high speed rotary UV label press, they recommended Etirama to us. We expect an ROI of four to five years, at present level of business. If we can scale up our business, the ROI can be faster too,” thinks Rajapandian. Equipped with the Etirama Press, Rajapandian is pretty enthusiastic about the

VEEPEE Art Studio adopts Kodak Flexcel NX System and Prinergy Workflow VEEPEE ART STUDIOS, one of the premier pre-press operations in South India recently added Kodak’s FLEXCEL NX System. The family owned business, in operation for over five decades, chose the Flexcel System as part of its continued focus on delivering outstanding quality to satisfy the evolving flexographic print application needs of its customers. The company’s heritage of investing in print innovations began when it became a pioneer in the market making photo-polymer blocks for customers. A combination of advanced plate surface patterning technology and advanced highlight imaging techniques, made possible by the unique nature of KODAK SQUARESPOT Imaging Technology, is a significant step forward in print quality across all graphic elements of a package while simultaneously driving print production cost savings. VEEPEE Arts’ Jai Prakash noted the systems advantages: “Kodak Flexcel NX System offers VEEPEE ARTS the distinct advantage of true “Flat top dots” – a standard that the industry increasingly desires. Kodak SQUAREspot Imaging Technology powers the advantage of producing very high-quality imaging. Not only does it boost final output, but it also leads to a faster plate-making process. Add to this the ability to hold even dots as small as 0.04% on the plate, and we eliminate all dot bumps or plate variability that is commonly seen with LAMS technology. Special screening technology also helps in rendering highlight dots, giving perfect vanishing vignettes.” Veepee Arts looks to expand its business by working across a variety of print applications like label printing, corrugation and board printing with the addition of the FLEXCEL system. The benefit for customers will be an exceptional quality of print using digital flexo technology that is comparable to gravure, without the limitations that come with analog and existing LAMS plates. VEEPEE Arts is combining the Kodak Flexcel NX System with Kodak Prinergy Workflow. The integration of Prinergy into their operation will help VEEPEE reduce production errors, enhances productivity, achieve outstanding flexibility, accept all popular file formats and

manage proofing devices, Digital Printing Machines & CTP devices directly. The software also ensures that VEEPEE Art’s workflow process is custom-built to handle even the most complicated trapping and colour requirements from its customers. Abraham Prabhakar, Vice President – Micro 3D Printing & Packaging, Kodak - India Cluster, commented: “Today’s ultracompetitive market demands improved print quality with shorter run lengths and faster turnaround times. VEEPEE ART is a pioneer in the market and transformational technology like FLEXCEL NX fits perfectly with their focus on exceeding their customers’ expectations for print quality and
service excellence. There is no question they will be producing the most exceptional plate quality in the market.” The KODAK FLEXCEL NX System was recently awarded for its innovation by the Printing Industries of America. An independent panel of judges selected the KODAK FLEXCEL NX System based on its innovation and likelihood of advancing the performance of the graphic communications industry. It was the third overall award for the FLEXCEL NX System in seven years – representing a remarkable achievement that emphasizes Kodak’s legacy of delivering breakthrough, game-changing printing technologies.

Xaar strengthens 3D printing business with the appointment of Professor Neil Hopkinson Xaar, provider of industrial inkjet technology, has announced the appointment of Professor Neil Hopkinson as Director of 3D Printing. Professor Hopkinson, who joins Xaar in March 2016, is the original inventor of the transformational High Speed Sintering (HSS) technology. He brings with him 19 years’ experience in additive manufacturing technology gained at the University of Sheffield, Loughborough University, De Montfort University, 3D Systems and the University of Nottingham. In his new role with Xaar Neil will build a world-class team to continue the development of HSS technology as well as other additive manufacturing processes; the team’s focus will be to accelerate the success of Xaar’s OEM partners in the exciting area of additive manufacturing. HSS is a revolutionary technology which uses inkjet printheads and infrared heaters to manufacture products layer by layer from polymer powder materials at much higher speeds than other additive manufacturing processes.
significant success leading the Innovate UK funded Factum Project. This three year project, which concludes in 2016, was set up to develop supply chain and full scale production capabilities for novel additive manufacturing technologies for application in major industrial sectors within the UK economy through three key partners; Unilever (FMCG), BAE Systems (Aerospace) and Cobham Technical Services (Space and Communications). Xaar’s role, which is integral to this project, has focused on optimising the performance of specialist third party fluids in combination with its market leading printheads. “Industrial 3D printing is entering an important phase of maturation and I am excited to be joining Xaar at this critical time,” comments Professor Hopkinson. “It is clear that inkjet printing will be an important enabling technology as the 3D printing sector scales up to be an integral part of mainstream manufacturing. As a leading supplier to printing equipment manufacturers all over the world, Xaar is in a strong position to accelerate the adoption of HSS technology within a number of key applications.”
“We are thrilled that Neil has agreed to join us,” comments Xaar’s CEO, Doug Edwards. “We are excited about the potential for HSS and other additive manufacturing technologies to expand Xaar’s horizons and exploit new opportunities.” The University of Sheffield, where Neil and the Factum Project have been based for the last few years, continues to lead the UK in the research and development of additive and advanced manufacturing processes. “We are proud of the achievements of Professor Hopkinson and his team and we welcome Xaar’s investment to progress the commercialisation of this exciting technology. It’s a fantastic example of how our research translates to industrial application and we look forward to continued engagement with Neil in his new role,” says Professor Mike Hounslow, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Engineering at the University of Sheffield. Also commenting on Professor Hopkinson’s new role within Xaar, Paul Howells, VP R&D Packaging at Factum project partner Unilever, says, “Xaar’s decision to invest in HSS is testament to the progress achieved by the Factum project. This is a very positive sign for the future of this technology and for Additive Manufacturing in the UK.”
