SPEND TODAY TO SAVE TOMORROW. Investing in the ECOLINE now is like having a long term saving plan for the future. The reasons are comprehensive: 

The minimum floor space, is a saving bonanza with today’s spiraling property costs.

The height of 2.6 mtrs and compactness, allows for operation on a single level, providing a complete saving on manpower.

The press is equipped with many standard features that are considered “upgrades” on other presses.

Shorter web leads between printing provides better print quality, improved colour registration and low waste.

Depending on requirements, other aggregates & features can be offered to meet specific production demands.

UpkarPrakashan looks at exports expansion with a brand new HeidelbergCD 102-4 The publisher of leading competitive exams books and magazines,UpkarPrakashan expands to overseas market with high quality stationery products. The Rise of a top competitive exams books publisher

“We never wanted any process or machine to prove a hindrance in our smooth working and expansion of our business. Consequently, we always believed in installing the most advanced technologies. Heidelberg has proved beyond our expectations. It (Heidelberg CD-102) is complementing our growth strategy.” – Mr.Mahendra Jain, UpkarPrakashan

Key Notes : > Their first was a general knowledge book for LIC entrance examination. > In the past one years’ time, they have added over 175 products to their range of high quality stationery products. > To answer their need for bigger machine, they installed a Heidelberg CD-102, for which no other brand was a match.

UpkarPrakashan, established in 1970, started its journey with the publication of a general knowledge book for LIC entrance examination. With no other book in such generics, Mr. Mahendra Jain not only pioneered this publishing segment but also has been at the top since day one. The publishing house has been the no. 1 in the competitive examination publication arena. In 1978, Mr. Jain launched the first-of-its-kind monthly magazine for competitive examination aspirants named PratiyogitaDarpan. “Books in the market are meant to answer long term needs of students. But, unfortunately, they were not apt when it came to preparing for competitive examinations. The aim for publishing this magazine was to answer the need of aspirants. Our reliable & authentic content helped us grow the segment,” says Mr. Jain. The English language edition of this popular competitive examination magazine was launched in 2006. Upkar Group outsourced printing till 1990 though in 1987 they had set up a photo typesetting facility which was India’s first typesetter. The first book got an impressive feedback from the market. This was the year they launched another magazine – SamanyaGyanDarpan. “The magazine targeted

second and third grade exams and today has a circulation of over 1.75 lakh copies,” says Mr. Jain. The third grade examination aspirants took up SamanyaGyanDarpan with enthusiasm. Soon Mr.Jain saw another opportunity and launched Success Mirror, also one of today’s popular magazines, simultaneously in Hindi as well as English. The combined circulation of both the editions is more than 2.25 lakh copies today. “We published extra study material and supplements simultaneously with our regular publications. These extra issues ranged from Science to General Knowledge, Reasoning, Mathematics, History, Culture, Arithmetic, Environment, Geography, Economics, Sports and other subjects relevant to popular competitive exams,” informs Mr. Jain. “We kept our focus on quality (both in terms of paper and presentation) and editing (for reliable and authentic content). Our special volumes are comprehensive and help students prepare for success in various exams. In addition to regular issues, there are Year Book & comprehensive Indian Economy issues which cover all vital information for preparation,” he adds. Upkar had started building up their in-house binding facility around the year 1985. They imported a binding machine that remarkably improved their capacities to expand their markets in India. “We had to wait for

pressideas/ commercial printing

days to get our dispatches ready. With the binding machine we were able to produce 45000 copies a day and were able to reduce the delivery times from 5 days to 2 days,” states Mr. Jain.

Printing at UpkarPrakashan Printing at UpkarPrakashan started in 1990 with the installation of their first Manugraph PO36. This was followed by another Manugraph – a PO26. Upkar also earned the distinction of using the first Web-printing machine for book printing in Northern India. Earlier the technology was exclusively used for newspaper and magazine printing. UpkarPrakashan installed a TPH model for Web printing of books. Then came in a KBA Rapida and Komori Spica (Perfecta). Both these machines were of relatively small size but provided high quality printing results.

and our children joined us. We never wanted any process or machine to prove a hindrance in our smooth working and expansion of our business. Consequently, we always believed in installing most advanced technologies. Heidelberg has proved beyond our expectations. Our brand new Heidelberg CD102 is complementing our growth strategy,” he is all praises. “Raised as the all-rounder, the Speed master CD 102 can handle a range of substrates from 0.03-millimeter paper to 1 mm thick cardboard (0.0012 in 0.039 in) with a production speed of 15,000 sheets per hour. The size format / substrate are an advantage especially for publishing houses like ours.”

Technology adoption keeps one step ahead Digital printing is not in the offing for

He will once again be lead by his passion to learn about the latest technology which he can use to meet his targets better. Keeping open the scope for expansion into newer fields, he finds packaging promising but has no immediate plan to enter this segment. Mr.Mahendra Jain doesn’t believe digital media is a threat to the publishing industry. He rather believes aggressive technology adoption is the answer to beat technological threats. “We always try to remain a step ahead of technology. We have both digital and hard copy editions. Both are growing and complementing each other,” he explains. His younger brother Mr.Narendra Jain and his two MBA sons are other people from the family who contribute to the management of UpkarPrakashan. It is a long journey for Mahendra Jain and

Heidelberg prints Upkar’s high quality stationery products Rahul Jain joined his father in the year 2006 after completing his Management studies from Mumbai. It was a turning point in the expansion of UpkarGroup. Right from the launch of English edition of popular magazine PratiyogitaDarpan in 2006 to establishing own strategic offices across major cities and setting up of Upkar’s Stationery division, Rahul has played a key role. In the past one years’ time, they have added over 175 products to their range of high quality stationery products. The inspiration for new creation comes from the market and learning from keeping a keen eye on latest developments world over. “The ideas for new product development come from inspiration as well as through our dedicated creative department,” says Rahul,

who keeps travelling to different parts of world to get his growth ideas.

When they expanded their wings with their new stationery unit – UpkarStationery, the market demand and acceptability of their product made them understand the need for bigger machine. Heidelberg was the right choice for higher volume qualitative production. “Heidelberg is a big brand and it’s not without reasons. We have had full support from Heidelberg team including their support staff. We attribute our success to our hard work, honesty and technological enhancement,” says Mr. Jain. “We have been very focused on our targets right from the beginning when I was working alone. The tradition continued even when my brother

UpkarPrakashan right now. Moreover, Mr.Mahendra Jain thinks that a suitable digital technology is not yet available to meet the demand of Upkar. He is looking for some heavy duty Digital machine matching high volume printing capabilities of Offset machines at matching prices. Today they have a complete set-up of latest machines from pre-press to post-press. Mr. Jain hardly missed a major exhibition of printing & publishing industry. He always remained abreast of the latest technology and technology has been a major factor in the growth of Upkar Group. As always, he will be visiting this drupa (drupa 2016) as well.

10

March 2016

The decision to install the latest Heidelberg press was quite easy for Upkar. “We considered quite a few other brands as well but they were no match for Heidelberg,” says Rahul. “After a few productive meetings and a couple of visits with Heidelberg people to Heidelberg sites watching people working with the machine, we were impressed with the words of the people running the machine. We have learnt from them that the 5th sheet from Heidelberg is usable and the claim has proved true as well,” he claims.

the last one year, we have participated in three exhibitions abroad,” informs Rahul. At the beginning, they were catering to some essential product demands and added premium products too. Soon they got a couple of orders and business got a nice launch pad with those orders. Rahul expects an installation growth and consequently the growth in sales in the wake of two key recent exhibitions in Europe and Middle East. Accordingly, he has big plans for expansion in the exports market. With a present turnover of around Rs.8 crores, Rahul is aiming a hundred crore turnover in the coming 5 years. The aim is big, and he has a well laidout plan as well to achieve this goal.

A major part of Upkar’s stationery business portfolio constitutes their export range. “In his UpkarPrakashan which was thought of to provide apt written guidance to students appearing in competitive exams. Long before PratiyogitaDarpan, in his very starting days, Mahendra had brought out two books – ‘LIC Examination Ke Solved Paper’ and ‘General Knowledge’. From that day to this day, Upkar has come a long way. Its flagship PratiyogitaDarpan has been a popular name in student fraternity for many decades. The principal Publishing business shows a lot of promise and is growing well. They are a team of five people from the family looking after the affairs at UpkarPrakashan and UpkarStationery.

3rd drupa Global Trends Report 2016 Optimism for growth in 2016. With just weeks to go before drupa 2016 opens, the results of the 3rd drupa Global Trends report have been published. The report finds that although recovery from the financial crisis in 2008 is incomplete and uneven, printers everywhere are increasingly optimistic about their prospects throughout 2016, despite tightening margins and falling prices. This is influencing their plans for investment in production equipment. Sabine Geldermann, Director drupa, Messe Düsseldorf, said: “This year’s drupa is a showcase for the latest developments in the global printing industry. By commissioning the series of drupa Global Trends reports, we are able to put these new developments into the context of the state of the industry as a whole. Anyone visiting drupa this year will find the reports make an invaluable backgrounder.”

The three reports have drawn on a global panel of about 750 printers to survey the state of the printing industry and expectations about its future over the three years leading up to drupa 2016.

Key Notes : > Africa and Middle East especially optimistic. > Digital growing but conventional processes still dominate. > Web to print stalls.

12

March 2016

The research and writing of the reports were handled by Richard Gray and Neil Falconer of the specialist consultancy and market research company Print Future. “The previous report in 2015 was upbeat in general, globally,” says Richard Gray. “In 2016 the picture is patchier, with some regions thriving, such as North America, others are struggling, including some of the developing regions. Similarly whilst packaging and functional markets are in general doing well, those in the commercial market are more challenged and those in the publishing market particularly so.” In each report the responses of printers have been gathered and aver-aged to produce a barometer of economic confidence. Some 37% of the global panel of printers described their current condition in 2015 as good, although a significant 12% said their condition was poor, giving a positive net balance of 25%. Looking ahead, printers were in general more positive with 50% expecting their economic condition to improve in 2016 compared with just 6% expecting it to deteriorate – a positive balance of 44%. Taken by region, everywhere is more optimistic for 2016 than 2015, but the biggest increases in positive feelings are in Africa, Australia/Oceania, Middle East and Asia. Taken by sector, all the 2016 forecasts are more optimistic on balance, with commercial and functional (sometimes called industrial) printing showing the greatest increase compared to 2015.

Digital prospects Looking at some 14 common print processes, the report found that, as might be expected, digital technologies are growing fastest (on average by 28% per annum), but that sheet fed offset lithography is also seeing significant growth, particularly in publishing (net positive growth of 7%) and packaging (+12%). Flexography is also doing very well in packaging (+18%), and gravure is also seeing a modest but definite growth (+3%) in this sector. Functional printing is a growth area for screen printing (+11%), though digital is very important here too.

pressideas/ commercial printing

While the bulk of turnover still comes from conventional print, there is a steady increase in the volume and value of digital print, with the exception of packaging where only 13% reported that it represents more than 25% of turnover, compared to 35% for commercial, 24% for publishing and 59% for functional. The ability of digital to print variable content is important, with 59% of functional printers and 35% of commercial printers reporting that more than 25% of their digital turnover was variable.

Web to print seems to have stalled, with only a percentage point of growth from 2014 (25% of printers had it) to 2015 (26%). Only North America as a region and functional print as a sector saw significant increases in volumes going through web to print.

Limits to growth Both printers and suppliers cited strong competition as the biggest constraint to growth, with lack of sales being almost as large a factor. When asked the reason,

the largest factor (58%) was finding new customers, with finding good sales staff second at 35%. About 32% blamed lack of demand for conventional print, but only 10% said the same for digital. The full report will be released in English in a few weeks; the Executive Summary will be available in seven languages (German, English, French, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Chinese) at drupa website.

"We wanted to automate our post press operations to improve converting efficiency, reduce WIP and shorten time to market. We decided to invest on a BOBST NOVACUT 106 E and it has substantially helped us achieve this objective. What used to take 2 to 3 days to die-cut with our manual

operations can now be done so fast that it allows us to be ready for the next order within a single day. For example, we made a record delivery in 16 hours flat beginning from printing to finishing for an urgent order of 435,000 cartons, which otherwise wouldn't have been possible !"

drupacity: On tour with “Wolfgang” – Numerous activities bring drupa highlights to the city When the Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre once again becomes the hot spot for the print-media industry during drupa (31 May to 10 June), the city will heartily welcome the hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world. Düsseldorf will be painted red with numerous activities as the metropolis on the Rhine is transformed into drupacity. The goal of this joint initiative of Messe Düsseldorf and Destination Düsseldorf is not to merely create visibility for the trade fair theme in the city, but rather to really make it come alive. “With the aid of several events, Düsseldorf will demonstrate that the city and its residents identify with the trade fair theme. This promotes location ties,” states Destination Düsseldorf Managing Director, Boris Neisser. “So of course we’re delighted about the positive response to the initiative, and the fact that Düsseldorf’s service industry is actively involved.” More than 50 partners from the hotel, gastronomy, retail and transport industries will be supporting drupacity with diverse activities – from a “paper art market” to innovative 3D projects to so-called

drupabases in hotels, at the airport and the central station, as well as in other locations. One highlight that is sure to enjoy plenty of attention is “Wolfgang”: a Berlin-style double-decker bus that the GoetheLab at the Technical University of Aachen had converted into a mobile 3D printer laboratory. It brings the latest scientific discoveries in the area of additive manufacturing technology – more commonly known as 3D printing – from the stationary lab into the city, and makes technology understandable while bringing it alive. Eight computer workspaces complete with 3D printers allow visitors to learn how to virtually construct an object that will later be printed three-dimensionally. Moreover, the FabBus – a combination of the words “fabber” and “bus” – features a showroom with specialist books on the subject, a lounge area, and a coffee and tea bar. And how did “Wolfgang” get its nickname? Why, from Germany’s most famous poet himself, in reference to the GoetheLab on Goethe Strasse in Aachen. The drupa highlight theme, 3D printing, will also be visible throughout the inner city, in shopping malls and large department stores. In the Schadow Arkaden, for example, visitors will be able to observe how the Düsseldorf TV tower emerges on so-called delta towers over the course of the entire trade fair.

Or how a 15-second body scan transforms into a unique 3D figure. Or how giveaways are produced in as little as 20 minutes – little ghosts that glow in the dark. In addition, the winner of a drawing contest at Galeria Kaufhof Am Wehrhahn will later receive the subject of their drawing as a 3D object. Further attractive exhibitions on the Kö will feature extraordinary items made of paper. Under the name “Paper Art Market”, stilwerk will show works by various artists, while the Kö Galerie presents a special fashion collection made of paper, designed by students of the Media Design School Düsseldorf. The theme of the collection is based on this year’s drupa slogan, “touch the future”. Düsseldorf’s hotel and gastronomy businesses will also drape the city in red, spoiling their guests at drupabases – for

example with special culinary delights. And if the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach, “printen” go the same route – the druPRINTen from the baker’s guild, that is: specially baked versions of the traditional “printen” cookie, decorated with the drupacity logo and a Düsseldorf motif, which will be offered in 100 bakeries, and handed out at the airport and in hotels as giveaways. To ensure that visitors feel welcome in the state capital from the moment they arrive, they will be greeted not only personally by friendly Drupaulas and Drupauls – welcoming teams dressed entirely in red – at the Düsseldorf airport and the central station, but also by a special testimonial campaign on billboards. These testimonials are intentionally not from celebrities, but from representatives of individual professions, who welcome drupa guests with individual quotes. And as a reminder of their visit, all

drupa guests will of course receive a suitable souvenir: the city symbol – the Düsseldorf cartwheel – will be available in the tourist information locations as a 3D figure. The city guide, Düsseldorf inside, will offer a clear overview of the drupacity programmes. It will be available on the exhibition grounds, as well as in more than 400 distribution points in Düsseldorf and throughout North Rhine-Westphalia. As of late April, the entire programme will also be posted online at www.drupacity.de, and published via Messe Düsseldorf’s social media channels. All information on drupacity is available in German and English, and Drupaula and Drupaul will also be at your service – speaking several languages. Welcome to drupacity 2016!

Global Graphics launches version 11 of the Harlequin RIP More controls for inkjet presses and new features for labels and packaging

A new release of the Harlequin RIP, the software engine that drives digital presses, has been launched. The new version, Harlequin 11, introduces features to improve inkjet output quality, offers more controls for variable data printing, and contains new features for labels and packaging applications. Martin Bailey, CTO, Global Graphics Software says, “Global Graphics continues to enhance the Harlequin RIP to maintain its position as the fastest and highest quality rendering engine for production print. We know that our success relies on helping our OEM partners to deliver and ship products that impress their customers, so the new developments in version 11 are specifically designed to address the pain points encountered in realworld print environments, identified either in response to customer requests, or in our own research.” Harlequin 11 is available in two editions: the Harlequin Host Renderer 11, which powers the Digital Front Ends used in high-volume digital production environments; and, Harlequin MultiRIP 11 for conventional and light digital production printing.

Harlequin Host Renderer 11 Harlequin Host Renderer 11 is an essential component of the digital front ends that power high-performance devices such as HP PageWide Presses. New features include:

already contains Harlequin VariData to speed up the processing of variable data saved as PDF/VT or PDF. Harlequin 11 introduces a new feature whereby each graphic is rendered only once even if it is used in multiple positions on a page. This is especially valuable when a page layout flexes or when many instances of a direct mail piece or label are imposed together into a single PDF “page” representing an imposed sheet. If PDF/VT files are created using “PDF/VT hints” (described in the ISO standard) the processing speed is even faster. Global Graphics believes that Harlequin 11 is the first RIP to be able to use these hints.

Harlequin MultiRIP 11 This version of the Harlequin RIP is active in thousands of installations around the world. Print service providers who upgrade to Harlequin MultiRIP 11 will benefit from many new productivity features, such as: •

Improvements to inkjet output quality: With Harlequin Multi-level Digital Screening technology – a process that tunes multi-level half-tones – output quality is raised significantly even on challenging media. This feature is also available as a standalone product that is compatible with workflow tools from other vendors including Esko and EFI.

Even faster variable data printing: The Harlequin RIP 18

March 2016

Speed enhancements targeted at image heavy jobs so that in light production printing, where presses are driven by a single RIP, pages are fed even more quickly to the press, increasing productivity so that print service providers can fit more jobs into a shift. Quality enhancements such as image snapping; many design and composition tools split what looks like a single large image into tiles when making PostScript and PDF which can result in fine white lines appearing on the output if the tiles don’t align correctly. Automated snapping identifies

and automatically adjusts tiles so that they align exactly.

New features for labels and packaging In addition to existing features for brand colour matching and a selection of screens for flexo, offset and digital production Harlequin 11 introduces: • The Harlequin Contour Processor that intercepts specified spot separations and exports them. Many packaging and label jobs include die lines and other technical separations which often need to be printed for proofing, or for aligning prints and pre-cut media or post-print die cutting. Those separations need to be removed from the raster for production printing. This feature is also useful for wide format plotter/cutters. • Overriding overprint for white, varnish and metallic: Some special colorants should not knock out of, or be knocked out by, other colorants. A varnish should never knock out of other colors, for instance, while a white ink laid in under other colors should not be knocked out by ‘real’ graphics in other inks. Harlequin 11 includes configurations that allow these overprints to be controlled. Press vendors and print shops who use Harlequin include HP Indigo and HP PageWide Press, Canon, Delphax, Global Inkjet Systems and Quad Graphics.

ESMA shows the potential of functional printing at drupa 2016 ESMA, European Specialist Printing Manufacturers Association, will be present in two pavilions at drupa 2016. The pavilion in hall 3A 70 will be dedicated to functional and industrial printing with member companies such as SPS demonstrating screen printing equipment used for food decoration (e.g. chocolate) and other special effects achievable at high operation speed. SPS’s partner ATMA will showcase latest developments in machines for conductive and technical printing. German specialist in stencils, KIWO, will present printing of pressure sensitive adhesives with high electrical conductivity. A variety of decoration techniques for glass and other rigid materials will be in the spotlight in the ESC booth and another ESMA member, Marabu, will present applications of their inks for touch panels, tablet and smart phone masks. Visitors to ESMA Lounge will learn about the latest projects around smart tags, smart sensors, flexible and washable conductive inks used in textile industry, and the overall employment of various print technologies for Internet of Things. Further innovations will be highlighted in ESMA pavilion in hall 6 where Color Passport will present their revolutionary approach to colour management and reproduction on different substrates. Other experts in colour management, ColorGate, come to the show with development stations and state-of-the-art RIP technology for industrial printing with inkjet. Last but not least, Intrinsic Materials, a specialist in nano-materials, will show their achievements in conductive inks and printed electronics components applied by the medical industry, such as e.g. disposable testers with smart tags. Functional printing will build the core of ESMA presence at drupa and it is therefore worthwhile to briefly investigate what hides behind this term. In its early days, the functional printing relied on chromatic inks which changed colour due to external influences such as light (UV/black light), temperature (heat), pH changes or water contact. They found their applications in printed gadgets, especially packaging which took marketing advantage from the distinctive special effects. The glowing and phosphorescent decoration started years ago and reappears on the market

on continuous basis. More advanced and more functional opportunities have followed and entered new industries. Evolution in conductive inks and electroluminescence (EL) not only benefited branding purposes (e.g. light-emitting packaging of Bombay Sapphire Gin) but delivered solutions also for solar panels (fingers and busbars). Initial applications have pushed the boundaries of functional printing. Printed circuit boards (PCB) and flexible antennas combining FM, TV, mobile, GPS in one antenna and used e.g. in automotive, gave rise to car radar systems for adaptive cruise control. Nowadays, near field communication (NFC) and RFID antennas are standard features in electric devices and the integration of printing in the manufacturing process constantly improves their costefficiency. As far as electroluminescence is considered, a technological jump took place towards OLED (organic light emitting diodes). Flexible OLEDs integrated in fabric pave the way for smart textiles and wearables, as shown in one of the recent ESMA-powered international projects – POLEOT (Printing of Light Emitting Devices on Textile). The door to the future of printed electronics, conductive inks and coatings is now wide open. Batteries (flexible, thin, rechargeable), energy harvest systems (based on Peltier effect), smart tags and sensors are becoming common consumable goods, many of them disposable, too. Smart wearables and smart sensors increasingly find applications in medical and pharmaceutical sectors, for instance quick test strips for diabetics, blood analysers, smart blister packs… Healthcare is one of the markets which embrace new solutions and enable successful business cases of printers who decided to “go functional”. Quad Industries has developed temperature logger labels for blood bags used in transport. The smart tag registers and transmits data to a smartphone app to ensure the correct transport conditions.

energy-consuming processes. Obviously, marketing departments will come on board, as well. One of the recent Audi TT brochures included printed controls which, after aligning with the smartphone on the right spot, turned the page into a controllable experience of the new model’s cockpit display. Functional printing partners with anti-counterfeiting technologies and delivers combinations of inks, coatings and substrates to create invisible markers. Both for monetary needs or luxury goods, security print is the most efficient and cost-attractive protection against imitation. Current possibilities offer even fingerprint recognition surfaces. Many of the above mentioned applications are included in the in-mould decoration process, be it for automotive or electronic devices – ranging from the integration of antennas in car mirror caps, in the car console, to capacitive buttons on 3D thermoformed parts and surfaces. The industry is growing and gives new, creative development dimensions for printers, manufacturers and product designers. They will all meet for 18 technical talks and business cases presented during the 3rd Advanced Functional and Industrial Printing conference (AFIP) on 2-3rd March 2016 in Radisson Blu Scandinavia hotel in Düsseldorf. The day before the conference, 1st March 2016, the nearby CST GmbH invites all attendees for a guided factory tour showing the company’s involvement with functional printing technology.

When mentioning the smartphone, many may not realise the number of its components facilitated by printing techniques. Capacitive switches, batteries, touch panels and screens – printing once again replaces expensive and highly

It includes corporate storefronts to manage corporate clients and their workflows, give them personalized user experience with individual corporate identities. “With advanced print workflow and MIS management, printers can manage pre-press workflow without hassle – from live and personalized quotations, artwork approval to automated job sheets, order management with multiple vendors and drop-shipment, shipment tracking and delivery with minimum human touches,” says Nidhi. “And the star of all features is the Design Studio that is purely coded using HTML5 and JavaScript. It runs in all the modern desktop and mobile browsers. The feature loaded Design Studio enables customers to have freedom or personalizing their designs, artworks and products to their choice. With pre-loaded design templates to begin with, well guided safe, cut and trim margins and library of clipart and fonts, it enables even amateurs to create professional artwork in minutes,” she continues. For Indian customers, Design’N’Buy would be showcasing how to benefit from growing potential of internet users of the country. It would be taking some real time examples to present advantages of Web to Print. “India has always been the biggest contender of printing good and services and most of the top performing Indian online printing portals have been developed and supported by Design’N’Buy. But, in general Indian PSPs still think of Web to Print as an option and not as the need of the hour to grow their business,” stresses Nidhi. “We are working on simplifying adoption strategies with economic packages especially for Indian customers so that they can invest in right technology and get maximum ROI out of this investment,” she says.

Design’N’Buy will be present in hall 7A, that’s the area of prepress / print, premedia/ multichannel. The company’s showcase theme would be – ‘Personalization and Web to Print to reduce pre-press and increase profit margins & turnaround speed’. Nidhi identifies that Inkjet, 3D Printing, Functional Printing, Green Printing, Multichannel Printing, Packaging and Production are the pillars of this drupa. “Thus the technologies innovations and launches around these arenas will be in limelight,” she says. “Since environmental standards for every industry are getting tighten, we are expecting something revolutionary in green printing domain as well in this drupa,” she adds.

Pointing towards the recent changes after the new government in India, she perceives that ‘Start up India, Stand up India’ and ‘Make in India’ are positives initiative which encourage youth to explore entrepreneurship and offer niche services and products globally. “The future of printing should be more Digital than other industries,” she expects. “India has been dominating service industry but its potential to establish as manufacturing leader has always been doubted. Now when the Prime Minister has rolled out a red carpet for industrialists to make India a manufacturing hub, it should help boost jobs and growth. Only thing is the plans are properly executed so that the desired results come through,” she suggests.

According to her, Digital is the next change for the printing industry. Today marketing collateral is becoming more personalized and short-run printing is more common. It has to work more automatically than it did earlier. Digital Printing is surely the answer to all these challenges. Targeting to establish a more firm presence in the European markets, Nidhi sees the significant presence of Indian visitors at drupa as a potential platform to make mark in the home market also. “Till now, India printers were not very inclined towards adopting innovative technologies but with their highest participation in drupa as visitors there’s surely room for us to capitalize,” she reasons.

Presently, the western world brings the major part of business for Design’N’Buy. The US is their number one market with highest number of customers in the country. “drupa is a big platform and expectation of both visitors and exhibitors are big. I expect industry to learn and adapt to newest form of tools and technology to create their own niche. Possibilities are immense, only one needs to measure individual capabilities and choose the right investments and growth path. I am sure Drupa is going to enable people to understand the power of 3D printing and impact of green printing on environment at large,” concludes Nidhi.

They have been very supportive in every aspect,” praises Sunil. “drupa has a beauty of showcasing the latest developments and capable of changing the industry’s future trends. We hope drupa will keep its surprising element this time also,” he adds.

“Digital technology has taken over print over period of time. Today we are using more and more e media instead of traditional media. In times to come this change will further go towards use of more and more digital. But having said that the printing has its own uniqueness and it is critical also. Specially when it comes about packaging the printing is a prime factor. There are lot of positivity in the industry due to recent change in political scenario. Make in India is also one of the prime motivating factors. We hope with the able leadership of the country we will be driving force in time to come,” foresees Sunil. “Our focus has always been towards providing green technology in printing & packaging industry. Q.I. Press Controls lands major order from Chinese printer Q.I. Press Controls (QIPC), is set to intensify its partnership with China-based Hunan Xinhua. In addition to the QIPC equipment already installed on its book and newspaper presses, Hunan Xinhua has now placed an order for two mRC-3Ds for automatic colour register on its new Goss book printing press. The two mRC-3Ds will be fitted with Ink Mist Shield (IMS) and a new folder will also be installed in the printing plant, which is located in the south-western city of Shaoyang.

Positive experiences

getting with the QIPC systems. Its positive experiences with them in the past were instrumental in its decision to invest in QIPC’s measurement and control systems for the new book printing press. “We have placed three previous orders with QIPC,” explains Xintao Lee, deputy General Manager of Hunan Xinhua. “We’re happy with their systems and know that they deliver superior quality and stable performances. QIPC has an extremely good name in the marketplace. With that reason in mind too, we opted to use QIPC on our new press.”

Hunan Xinhua knows exactly what it’s The mRC-3Ds will enable the colour register to be controlled completely automatically on the press from now on. In terms of speed, the mRC-3D camera is second to none and is able to give accurate measurements independently of the focal distance and irregularities in the paper web. This means extremely short response times as a result of which waste can be substantially reduced. The mRC-3D detection camera is now

equipped with double sensors. The double sensor technology not only doubles the possibilities, but can also handle depth more efficiently. This concept has proven its value when it comes to unsteady paper web routings and/or surfaces. IMS ensures that the optics on the mRC-3Ds can be cleaned using removable glass. “We expect that the system will maintain our high standards of quality and keep waste to a minimum,” adds Xintao Lee. Hunan Xinhua is a large state-owned company operating in the South-west of China. The two mRC-3Ds will be installed at the company’s headquarters in Changsha. The company prints around 25 million copies annually. “The mRC-3D, which Hunan Xinhua is already using on an existing press, helped convince them of the system,” explains Paul Yu, Managing Director of QIPC China. “They were so satisfied with it that it wasn’t difficult for them to buy the mRC-3D for their new press as well.”

The Independent prints its final edition on 26 March Britain’s Independent newspaper has ended its long print journey with the final paper edition appearing on March 26. The paper makes its “historic transition” to digital-only format with the final edition. The final print edition of the Independent was greeted with a fond farewell from journalists around the world. The paper ended with a special wraparound saying ‘STOP PRESS’. The final copy’s front page had a touching photograph of passengers being evacuated in Brussels in terror rescue operations. The exclusive front page story was about a British

connection in a plot to kill a Saudi king. The paper was launched by a group of journalists led by Andreas Whittam Smith in 1986 and the Sunday title was launched in 1990. During its heydays it enjoyed a circulation over 400,000 copies. The circulation has seen a steep decline and presently came close to just 60000 copies per day. It was announced in February that its owner, ESI Media, was closing the print editions. The company said it would create new jobs at the online-only Independent, and some editorial roles would transfer to Johnston Press as part of the regional publisher’s acquisition of the i. The company’s commuter-focused daily newspaper i has already been sold to regional newspaper publisher Johnston Press for 24 million pounds. More than 100 journalists across the two titles are facing redundancy. In a letter published in the final edition, publisher Evgeny Lebedev said, journalism had “changed beyond recognition” and the newspaper “must change too”. He extended

his thanks to the paper’s “most important allies” – its readers. “I know that today will be the last time you hear this newspaper crash through your letterbox; the last time you swap a smile and a few coins with the man in the corner shop and walk out with your daily bread under your arm,” the letter reads. “Some of you might have done that nearly 10,000 times since 1986. The depth of our gratitude is impossible to express.” ESI Media – which also owns London’s Evening Standard newspaper, distributed free on weekdays – says it is confident the move away from print will be a smooth transition pointing to growth in its online users. The Independent was founded in 1986 and was known for its emphasis on international news. As a result of the move to digital-only, owner ESI Media will create 25 digital content roles, launch a new subscription mobile app as well as open more editorial offices in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The i100.co.uk site, meanwhile, will be renamed indy100.com.

Press Controls (QIPC) has not only built up a reputation in the Netherlands and Europe, but also far beyond: the printing industry the world over has been discovering the benefits of equipping its presses with measurement and control systems produced by the Oosterhout-based company. Uttarbanga Sambad in India is yet another in a long series of businesses that have been placing orders with QIPC. It is through Naph Graphics - supplier of the new press – that Uttarbanga Sambad is investing in the mRC3D system for colour register.

The mRC-3D system is to be installed on a brand new newspaper press with four towers and two folders in its plant in Siliguri in the north-east of India. The order will involve a total of 8 mRC-3D cameras. Naph Graphics is responsible for the project coordination. Uttarbanga Sambad’s production manager, Shekhar Karande explains what the most import reasons were for investing in the mRC-3D. “Our aim was to make time savings in the colour register. We also want to print more accurately as well as minimise the amount of waste.” The mRC-3D is a fully automated colour register system for rotary offset printing presses. In this particular case, eight digital cameras with built-in microprocessors will be responsible for real-time data processing of the measurement data. The mRC-3D system in India comes with the Automatic Ink Mist Shield (AIMS) which cleans the lenses automatically.

Uttarbanga Sambad is a regional broadsheet that has been in existence since 1980. With a market share of 80 percent, it is the biggest newspaper in the state of West Bengal. In addition to Siliguri, the paper also has printing plants in Cooch Behar and Malda. Shekhar Karande is happy with the company’s investment in QIPC’s system. “As a result of this, we expect to make considerable savings in terms of time and money”, he reports. “What’s more, we hope to improve the print quality.” The excellent reputation that QIPC enjoys in the print trade has contributed to these heightened expectations on the part of Shekhar Karande and Uttarbanga Sambad with respect mRC-3D.

New Anicolor 2 at drupa 2016 Even more profitable production of short runs using the latest generation of Heidelberg Anicolor technology

What do commercial and packaging printers have in common? Both need to optimize their processes so they can deal with increasingly shorter production runs and frequent order changes involving different materials while still remaining profitable. While the CMYK colour model is used for printing advertisements, lots of spot colours are customary when printing packaging and labels. This is where the Anicolor short inking technology from Heidelberg comes in, offering an optimum solution package for the flexible production of short runs. The advantages can be summarized with the formula 90-50-50: Around 90 percent less waste thanks to fast and constant inking. It takes just 20 to 30 start-up sheets to reach the correct ink levels for a new order. The result is a 50 percent reduction in setup times combined with a 50 percent increase in productivity. “Our customers have their challenges, and we have the solutions and answers they need in the area of both digital and offset printing,” explains Stephan Plenz, Member of the Management Board responsible for Heidelberg Equipment.

Some of the key features of new Anicolor are: shortened setup times thanks to a selectable ink shut-off program and constant production conditions thanks to perfectly matched Saphira consumables.

Key Notes :

“The Anicolor technology is used in both small and medium production runs, and its scope of application will be increased once again with the new Anicolor 2.”

Anicolor 2 – greater ink density at the push of a button for savings of up to 15 minutes Heidelberg will be presenting the next generation of Anicolor technology at drupa 2016 with Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor 2 for greater flexibility, speed and productivity. This is achieved with three innovations. The first of these is the Anicolor Booster. This can be activated at the push of a button on the Prinect

Press Center and permits a wider range of inks thanks to an improved setting range for ink density on different printing stocks. In most cases, this does away with the need to change the ink chamber as was previously required with very absorbent printing stocks. This shortens the setup time in commercial printing since both coated and uncoated paper can now be processed with the same ink series. This benefit is even more pronounced in packaging printing, with its ever-changing spot colors. Up to 15 minutes can be saved here by not having to change the screen roller. Changing to a bigger screen roller is mostly only required for orders involving the application of opaque white, gold, or silver. Productivity is further increased by the two other innovations. The first of these is a faster washup program that provides for faster ink changes and therefore shorter setup times thanks to 9,000 revolutions per hour instead of the previous 7,000. As a result, changing color shades can now be achieved up to a minute faster. This enables packaging printers facing two or more ink changes in almost every new order to get through two or three orders a day more. The second of these innovations is a function allowing the operator to choose between “standard”, “short”, or even “none” for the ink shut-off time, depending on the color assignment from one job to the next. The shortened ink shut-off saves another 20 seconds, while eliminating it altogether reduces the setup time by 40 seconds. The option “without” is ideal for successive orders of the same type.

Perfectly matched Saphira consumables All of these benefits are enhanced through the use of tested Saphira consumables. With the Saphira

technology. The machine is replacing one of two Speedmaster SX 52 Anicolor as well as a UV machine in A3 format from another manufacturer.

Druckhaus Mainfranken GmbH uses the new Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor 2 with UV technology to print gang runs on very challenging materials.

“We presented the Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor as prototypes at drupa 2012. We have sold over 200 printing units since then – split down the middle between commercial and packaging printers,” explains Stephan Plenz. “At the next drupa we will be showing how easy it can be to complete short production runs quickly, flexibly, and economically using offset printing with the Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor 2. Another aspect of this is machine and materials coming together in perfect harmony and enabling a standardized and fast overall process together with the Prinect Workflow.” At drupa 2016, the Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor 2 will be presented at the IST stand in Hall 2, right in the passage to Heidelberg in Hall 1. The six-color press with coating unit includes full UV functionality. We will show how material costs can be significantly reduced since Anicolor 2 enables UV applications to be processed on expensive, non-absorbent printing stock with very few makeready sheets. Anicolor 2 with a new design, new feeder, and the new Prinect Press Center XL 2 will be available as standard from November 2016.

A number of technical functions such as the new Anicolor Booster and the faster washup programs will be available earlier from July 2016.

At the heart of Anicolor 2 is the Anicolor Booster, which can be activated via the Prinect Press Center. >>>

Performance Kit Anicolor, the inks are designed for this special application and deliver constant production conditions and reproducible quality for the most demanding orders.

“The Anicolor 2 has made a promising start. We use it for printing gang runs on very challenging materials. The UV ink technology permits a very wide range of printing stocks and the Anicolor 2 technology provides for fast setup and a significant reduction in waste of what is very expensive printing stock,” reports Managing Director Ulrich Stetter. The company’s products include stickers and PVC labels on different printing stocks, as well as linen papers or highquality, matt-coated papers. All in all therefore a very wide range of products, which places high demands on the printing machine. The Anicolor Booster easily processes the wide range, while Saphira Anicolor UV inks deliver the best printing results.

Field testers even more productive with Anicolor 2 “The Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor 2 enabled us to increase our productivity by a further 10 percent, and our printing speed also rose to up to 1,000 sheets an hour,” confirm Wendelin Lipp and Reto Hauri, Commercial Manager of the printing company DAZ Druckerei Albisrieden AG in Zürich. There is no one better qualified to offer an assessment. DAZ installed the first Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor in Switzerland following the presentation at drupa 2012. DAZ has been using Anicolor 2 since summer 2015, and uses the Anicolor Booster for a wide range of printing stock. Even printing on natural paper – in frequent demand at the moment in Switzerland – as well as glossy coated materials is now possible with just one ink series and without changing the ink chamber or screen roller. The production runs range from 50 to 50,000 sheets, with a salable product achieved after 30 setup sheets in most cases. Druckhaus Mainfranken GmbH in Marktheidenfeld, the production company of the Würzburg-based online printer Flyeralarm, recently started using a Speedmaster XL 75 Anicolor 2 with UV

Global Graphics raises the bar in Inkjet quality with drupa launch New innovation helps single-pass inkjet presses achieve high quality at high speed. Single-pass inkjet presses can now achieve significantly better print quality, thanks to a technology breakthrough to be unveiled by Global Graphics Software at drupa (drupa innovation parc 70B21\C20). The Harlequin Multi-Level Digital Screening Engine varies the amount of ink delivered from the inkjet head in any one location on any type of media to overcome common problems such as streaking and mottling that are frustrating many press manufacturers. Martin Bailey, chief technology officer at Global Graphics Software, says: “Our new Harlequin Multi-Level Digital Screening Engine compensates for the quality problems currently faced by inkjet press manufacturers and helps them to achieve their goals of high quality and high speed. This new engine can be integrated into Digital Front Ends based on Harlequin RIPs, but will also work with third party DFEs by the addition of a standalone version to replace the native screening.” The Harlequin Multi-Level Digital Screening Engine is part of a new service Global Graphics will introduce to inkjet developers at drupa, that sees technicians measure test prints from single-pass greyscale presses, and process the results through Global Graphics’ new Digital Print Quality Optimizer tool. This calculates optimized patterning and overlaps for the various ink drop sizes available, to overcome common high speed inkjet press problems such as streaking and mottling. The Digital Print Quality Optimizer calculates

42

March 2016

the optimum drop sizes and screen pattern for particular combinations of press, greyscale/multi-level print heads, and substrate. This significantly improves the printed quality of photographs and similar image types, especially in highlights and areas of subtly changing tones. Global Graphics measures the printing characteristics of the press and calculates optimal changes in the dot patterning. These mitigate the effect of drops straying in flight from their aim points and possibly then spreading and coalescing on the substrate before they can be cured. The Digital Print Quality Optimizer allows the Harlequin Multi-Level Digital Screen to be fine-tuned for particular press/substrate combinations, with particular regard to controlling the overlap between different drop sizes as they are used to build up tones from light to dark.

The White Paper, “Halftone screen Optimization for Single-Pass Inkjets,” can be downloaded from the Global Graphics website. Global Graphics, developer of software platforms for digital printing, digital document and PDF applications, including the Harlequin RIP, has offices near Boston, Massachusetts and in Tokyo. Customers include HP, Quark, Canon, Delphax, Kodak and Agfa.

Innovation at Uflex - Flexfresh’ Equilibrium Modified Atmospheric Packaging (EMAP) for shelf life extension of fresh produce

In 2014, Indian global flexible packaging great Uflex decided to offer shelf life extension solutions to the Indian fresh produce industry. With the help of the foreign technology partner, Uflex came out with a solution. “The solution Equilibrium Modified Atmospheric Packaging (EMAP) entails maintaining consistent oxygen and carbon dioxide inside the bag during the shelf life of the produce,” said Ashok Chaturvedi, Chairman and Managing Director, Uflex Limited.

In several experiments on various products, it was observed that the ratio of oxygen and carbon dioxide has always been maintained at equilibrium. The film provides good release characteristics of CO2 emitted by the produce. In addion, Flexfresh’ Film is biodegradable by composting.

Key Notes : > Existing fresh produce packaging solutions grappled with the problem of water condensation inside the bag. > During transpiration, humidity gets released and condenses inside the bag causing fungal and bacterial infections on the produce. > Flexfresh’ – maintaining humidity at 98%, keeps the product dry without allowing condensation of the humidity.

46

March 2016

“During the initial phase of trials, the technical team came up with the nuances of tropical produce and felt that the traditional polymers being used for shelf life extension of fresh produce may not work. Their sound logic was that most polymers available were either good barriers to oxygen or water and it is critical to have a unique polymer which could offer the precise requirements of both oxygen and water barriers. In fact, all existing fresh produce packaging solutions in the world grappled with the problem of water condensation inside the bag - a fact that was established during our market study. Also for products that perspired heavily, it was found that the MAP did not work due to higher CO2 inside the bag changing the organoleptic of the produce,” added Mr. Ashok Chaturvedi. This is critical for fresh produce packaging because the oxygen needs to be maintained to keep the product in aerobic conditions. During transpiration, humidity gets released and condenses inside the bag causing fungal and bacterial infections on the produce. “Thus was conceived Flexfresh’ with the holy grail of oxygen and water barrier for packaging fresh produce. Flexfresh’ while maintaining the humidity inside the bag at 98%, keeps the product absolutely dry

without allowing condensation of the humidity. This results in very low weight loss of the produce as it continues to breathe in hydrated oxygen available inside the bag. In several experiments on various products, it was observed that the ratio of oxygen and carbon dioxide has always been maintained at equilibrium. The film provides good release characteristics of CO2 emitted by the produce. This ensured that the produce in a few cases could be protected naturally from diseases such as Botrytis, Gray Mold etc. using high CO2 content. The icing on the cake is that while offering all the benefits, Flexfresh’ Film is biodegradable by composting. Thus Flexfresh’ complies with all international regulations for overall migration (EC 1935/2004), reach compliance (EC 1907/2006) and qualifies for biodegradation under DIN EN 13432 (2000-12),” said Ashok Chaturvedi. “Noida Packaging plant of Uflex has installed and commissioned two respiration meters at its Fresh Produce Research and Innovation Laboratory. A team of food technologists and packaging professionals are in the process of developing Flexfresh’ across packaging formats. Flexfresh’ is currently available as Liner Bags in 5kg and 10Kg standard international

sizes, Flow Wraps, FFS Film and Lidding film,” added Siva Shankaran, Vice President - Flexfresh’. Uflex is currently working on a retail pack film to offer it for FFS for both cut and whole products. A leading Dutch Bell Pepper exporter has commenced shipping its produce to USA by sea containers which was not possible earlier and used to be sent out by air, incurring huge costs. The exporter is happy with the arrival quality and intends to export over 100 containers from Holland to USA this year after conducting successful trials by sea container earlier last year.

An Indian pomegranate grower has been supplying its produce to Europe. The moisture inside the pomegranate crown led to fungal growth and this was restricting them to expand their exports from India. Extensive trials were conducted during 2015 and in the current season, over 100 containers of pomegranate have already been exported to Europe to leading super markets with excellent quality upon arrival. Uflex is working with several leading super markets around the world for establishing the benefits of Flexfresh’ in potatoes, brussel sprouts, papaya, grapes, berries,

pomegranates, flowers, beans, broccoli, cauliflower, mango, okra, mushroom, cut vegetables and several other products. Uflex and its partner along with a leading Institute of Packaging will be conducting a series of trials to study the advantages and benefits of using Flexfresh’ for shelf life extension. The reports will help both the organizations to strategically work with big American farmers and exporters to extend the shelf life of their products in the most safest and sustainable way.

First Gallus digital printing theme day: “How digital printing is changing the label business” Gallus invited customers to the first “Digital theme day” in Frankfurt am Main on 18 February. Karl-Gerhard Amerongen, Gallus Head of Digital Sales Europe, welcomed guests from the label printing sector who had come along to examine digital printing more closely and find out about further developments in this area. In Mark Hanley, a top expert in this field, Gallus had secured a speaker who gave an impressive, in-depth account of the steady upward trend in digital developments in label printing and packaging. He focused on changes due to digitalisation that will occur in all industrialised countries in the future,

and the resulting transformation of the label markets. In a case study, Thilo Heizenröther and Christoph Muhr from StieberDruck GmbH of Lauda-Königshofen explained how new areas of business can be opened up using existing digital printing know-how. This was followed by Axel Hartmann from UPM Raflatac, who explained the challenges that substrate manufacturers need to overcome with regard to the various digital printing processes and described the offerings available to customers. Within this event Gallus supports its

orientation “Success and security for the labelprinter”, accompanying its customers continuously in their business activities and gives them support, even with the help of independent external specialists.

nyloflex FTF Digital flexo plate wins in the pre-press – graphics category Flint Group Flexographic Products have won the 2016 FTA Technical Innovation Award for its nyloflex FTF Digital plate – offering printers and tradeshops an easy way to achieve flat top dots on flexo printing plates. The first commercially available plate of its kind, the nyloflex FTF Digital plate offers flat top dots and a micro-textured surface without the need for additional processing steps or digital surface screening. This unique combination of features provides enhanced simplicity for packaging printers and increases efficiency in the pre-press and plate making process. According to P.J. Fronczkiewicz, Product Manager Flint Group Flexographic Products, “By far, the biggest advantage of the nyloflex

FTF plate for flexible packaging printers is its inherent, micro-textured surface that provides the perfect conduit for accepting and then transferring ink onto smooth substrates.” Fronczkiewicz continues, “This allows printers to achieve substantial increases in solid ink density and nearly flawless, mottlefree ink laydown.” Printers will also enjoy the elimination of printed trail edge void issues with the new technology employed in the nyloflex FTF Digital plate. This novel technology also allows plate makers to process the nyloflex FTF Digital plate just like they would any other standard digital plate without the need for additional equipment or consumable items or further investment in high resolution

imaging upgrades and software. Due to the specialized surface texture, which is suitable for any resolution, time savings can be achieved by imaging at a lower resolution. With ‘The Easy Way’, it is no longer necessary for tradeshops to bear the painstaking and costly process of matching and equalizing the subtle differences in surface screening between plates produced at multiple locations using different flat top dot systems – significantly reducing the complexity of the pre-press and platemaking process. The nyloflex FTF plate technology was first introduced at the 2015 FTA Forum / INFO*FLEX and has received excellent reviews and acceptance in the flexible packaging printing market since its commercial release in July. The plates are available in .045” and .067” thicknesses. Interested printers and tradeshops can apply for a free trial sample kit by visiting Flint Group’s website.

Bradman Lake launches a new variant of the HSS Former Late last year, Bradman Lake launched a variant of the highly successful, three axes servo, HSS Double Head, glue and lock style carton / tray former in a single head version which is smaller in footprint and more cost effective for lower speed applications. This new variant had been considered previously but was precipitated when one of their customers, a very large multinational chocolate and food company, placed an order for a complete integrated packaging machinery system which had to be located into a confined floor space. Both the space available for such a machine combined with the requirement for low carton forming speeds dictated a creative solution which needed to remain well proven. The engineering design team at Bradman Lake knew that they had to design and build

50

March 2016

this new forming machine within a clearly assigned number of months, so the response was to develop a “slimmed down” single head version of the larger HSS former but retain and enhance the technical features that have been so readily accepted by the industry. The resultant machine incorporates the following high level of specification features: • A low level, large capacity, powered and fully adjustable carton blank magazine which is fully shaft adjusted to suit different carton sizes. • Servo motor powered vacuum carton feed bar which extracts carton blanks from the front of the carton magazine and positions them onto the flat deck shuttle mechanism. • Servo motor driven carton shuttle mechanism which, again, is fully adjustable from a common centerline which provides a greater carton blank size range. • Precise positioning of glue and consistent location above the carton plunger cavity. Hot melt or lock corner cartons / trays handled on the same machine. • Faster Plunger speed descent and ascent using electronic cam profiles – allows speeds up to 60 cartons or trays per minute. • The new HSS Single Head machine can glue or lock form cartons or trays with taller height side walls than was previously possible.

Even coarse boards such as microfluted and B & C fluted corrugated boards can be successfully formed up. The entire electronic component platform of this machine incorporates Rockwell / Allen Bradley devices. Turnover end tooling can be fitted to produce single and double side wall cartons and trays commonly known as frame view styles.

The new machines quickly made their debut and won accolades from the customer for advanced design function and practical application of compact design techniques. The HSS Single Head former has now joined the ever expanding range of Bradman Lake packaging machines which offer tangible benefits to an increasingly demanding set of industries and customers.

UN-II and UN-III certification marks for Bag-in-Box container In cooperation with Mobil Den Hartog, authorized dealer in the Netherlands for Mobil lubricants, SOLIDUS SOLUTIONS, producer of solid board and solid board packaging, developed the revolutionary 20 liter Bag-in-Box-solution. The container recently passed some major UN-tests and has been approved for UN-II and UN-III class liquids. Bag-in-Box may now be used to contain goods with medium danger (UN-II) and goods with low danger (UN-III). The whole test procedure included tests on pressure buildup, dropping, piling and leak tightness. The tests show that the Bag-in-Box containing for example motor oil can be used at temperatures of 55°C (131°F). It is also safe to create piles with this container that are 3 meter (9 ft.) high. Bag-in-Box can be used for land and sea transport of UN-II and UN-III liquids. In 2014, together with Mobil Den Hartog and Kwikfit, SOLIDUS SOLUTIONS (formerly Smurfit Kappa Solid Board Packaging) developed the innovative Bag-in-Box system for the storage and use of motor oil in car

service stations. Garage managers may use this system for a more efficient stock management of their oil products and improve their environmental performance. The Bag-in-Box system consists of a plastic bag (20 liters) with faucet that is protected by a recyclable FSC solid board container. SOLIDUS SOLUTIONS developed the exceptional construction of the box which ensures that less than 0.5% oil is left in the bag. After the oil has been used, the solid board and the plastic bag can be handed in for separate collection of waste. In the Netherlands almost 300 car service stations already use the Bag-in-Box system successfully.

2015 (for sustainable products). SOLIDUS offers a wide range of recyclable packaging solutions and specialises in the production of solid board, solid board packaging and graphic board in various compositions. The company supplies a range of sectors including the food packaging industry and industrial markets. In April 2015 the Solid Board operations of Smurfit Kappa in the Netherlands, Belgium and the UK were acquired by pan-European mid-market investor Aurelius and rebranded as SOLIDUS SOLUTIONS.

The Bag-in-Box system creates less waste and saves on waste collection costs. An example of the successful introduction of the Bag-in-Box system is the ‘Highly Recommended’ status that Mobil Den Hartog acquired during ExxonMobil’s Distributor Excellence Category Award 2015. The container also won the Smurfit Kappa Innovation Award 2014 and was nominated for the Dave Bebelaar Duurzaamheid Award

Cylinder manufacturer, Afflatus Gravures invests in CFM from Daetwyler With four production sites in the country, Afflatus Gravures, one of India’s leading gravure cylinder manufacturers, wants to be close to its customers. To respond to their wishes even more precisely and flexibly, the company decided to invest in three additional CFM rotary and polishing machines. Afflatus Gravures streamlines its working processes and responds more flexibly to growing customer demands with the recent investment. After its great previous experience with the Daetwyler Graphics CFM, the Indian gravure cylinder manufacturer’s repeat choice was logical and fast. The company is impressed by CFM’s highly

precise turning and polishing results. One push of a button creates superior copper cylinders that fulfill the highest engraving requirements. The CFM polishing stone and polishing belt modules guarantee that Afflatus easily reaches the quality of the copper surfaces desired by customers. In this manner, customers achieve the optimal printing conditions – coordinated to the respective materials. Another crucial advantage is that measurement, turning and polishing units are individually programmable. This facilitates fully automated workflows that require no operator intervention.

All in all, constant and convincing results, optimal reliability and maximum flexibility have convinced Afflatus Gravures to again invest in the Daetwyler Graphics CFM.

Lake Image Systems, Ross Manufacturing and HERMA jointly bring new Integrated Labelling Machine Lake Image Systems, in partnership with Ross Manufacturing and HERMA, has developed an integrated labelling machine which combines a flexible label transport system, a high speed label applicator and an automated in-line inspection system. The labelling machine has been successfully installed and commissioned at a major security printer to automate the production and inspection of secure labels.

• Many authentication labels, vouchers, lottery and gaming cards have an added concealment feature to protect variable printed codes or images on the label from unauthorised individuals. However, verifying the concealment feature is applied correctly is commonly done manually or using a separate offline inspection system. This process is unreliable and can hugely increase production costs and extend delivery times. The new, integrated labelling machine is the culmination of technology and expertise from these three players. • Ross Manufacturing has built a high performance label transport which incorporates its web tension dancer roller technology that continuously adjusts the

52

March 2016

tension to prevent web breaks when travelling in either direction. Together with Ross’s overall system management software, the equipment can operate at speeds up to 250 meters per minute. HERMA integrated its label applicator system to add a scratch-off label to conceal variable codes pre-printed on the security label. HERMA also leads the project on behalf of the end client. Lake Image Systems has integrated its high resolution cameras and high intensity lighting onto the labeller and deployed its Discovery Multiscan software to read and inspect every label. If Multiscan detects a label is out of sequence or has a misplaced scratch-off, then the type of error and its precise location within the roll is logged. At the end of the label run, Multiscan’s “Make-up” routine rewinds the roll in the reverse direction and presents each faulty label in turn to the operator. The operator can either flag it as good or replaces the faulty label before the label is automatically re-inspected. This ensures all labels in the roll are always 100% correct. “We believe the combination of in-line label application, inspection and label correction on a single device

is a first in the industry,” said Ross Baker, Owner of Ross Manufacturing. “The three way partnership brought together the best brains and technology in the industry to create a truly unique labelling machine that has already delivered significant productivity gains for the end client.” “With the security labels market growing rapidly, we were delighted to be a part of this exciting new innovation,” added Martin Keats, Managing Director at Lake Image Systems. “Our combined in-line inspection and “Make-up” process now guarantees that every label roll is 100% correct before leaving the equipment, reducing production costs and waste but also mitigating the potential risks associated with faulty labels for both the security printer and the end client.” Lake Image Systems will be present with its range of solutions at drupa (stand B42, hall 11).

Mark Andy Open House showcases digital printing & finishing workflow solutions Attendees appreciated the open and intimate sessions, with operations, technology, and workflow questions asked and answered. Recently the global headquarters of Mark Andy was the setting for an energetic audience representing more than 30 converter companies that came to get a firsthand look at Mark Andy’s digital printing and finishing workflow solutions. While the unique Digital Series hybrid production system running in a simulated production operation was the centerpiece of the Open House, several very informative presentations supplemented the day’s learning experience. Presentations by Ryan Reding, GM of WS Packaging’s Dallas plant, an early beta site for the Digital Series technology, and Mark Hanley, president of industry consultancy firm I.T. Strategies, laid the foundation for the facility tours and live equipment demonstrations. Additional tour highlights included a live demo of the Rotoflex Vericut3 offline digital and conventional web finishing solution and a tour of Mark Andy’s Lean Manufacturing operations, Mark Andy University, and the Mark Andy flexo and digital show rooms. Mark Andy CEO Kevin Wilken comments, “We went all in about three years ago, hiring the best and the brightest to focus on R&D, combining flexo and digital printing, with inline converting and decorating. We launched the Digital Series because we are extremely confident in it and we are very proud to share this with you today.” Mark Hanley provided a wealth of information

on digital technology’s current and future potential in the label and packaging markets. “The Hybrid modular inkjet systems, such as the Digital Series, are predicted to experience annual growth rates of 20% through 2020. Inkjet is at least capable as electrophotography in print quality, but is greatly under-represented in the market. Mark Andy is a protagonist of inkjet and carries a lot of credibility in the market,” he stated Ryan Reding assessed the Dallas plant’s experience as a beta site for the Digital Series hybrid production system. The site has gone through all the system’s transitions with Mark Andy and has been running the latest iteration of the Digital Series in a production mode since early January. “We run about 35,000 to 40,000 feet per 8-hour shift, with 50 changeovers a day, at consistent speeds of 220-240 fpm, depending on the job. We have found it to be a really solid and stable piece of equipment.” Reding called the overall beta experience a “true partnership.” The Mark Andy Label Factory was the centerpiece of the Open House, with the Digital Series press running continuously throughout the event, simulating the various run sizes and printing/converting combinations facing converters today. The Digital Series hybrid production system incorporates a modular design that allows for highly customizable configurations of

printing and converting operations. The system in operation included corona treating and web cleaning, three flexo stations (one before and two after the UV inkjet module), a rail-mounted cold foil unit, and Mark Andy’s QCDC (Quick Change Die Cut) module. During the course of 3 hours in operation, the Mark Andy Label Factory ran 12 different labels with 18 different versions/SKUs, at production speeds of over 200 fpm, resulting in 300,000 sellable labels. Job specifications included UV inkjet (CMYK and CMYK+W), alternating die sizes, flexo printing with spot and fluorescent colours, and cold foil decoration on a variety of substrates including semi-gloss, clear on clear, and white BOPP. Along with a live video stream throughout the entire event, attendees got an up-close look at the machine in operation during the facility tour. To conclude the event, a Mark Andy Label Factory Financial Plan was reviewed with attendees demonstrating a significant shift in the breakeven point between traditional flexo and a production hybrid solution. “I was very impressed with the event overall,” offered Dave Wagner, operations manager for PM Company in Fairfield, Ohio. “The highlight for me was the converter testimonial that provided a real-life assessment of the Digital Series hybrid system in operation. I was also impressed with the Mark Andy facility and its manufacturing flow, along with the company’s obvious commitment to customer service. I got a great education during my visit.” “What an exciting way to kick off Mark Andy’s 70th year,” observed Wilken. “The response received from the Open House was more than we could have hoped for. Attendees appreciated the open and intimate sessions, with operations, technology, and workflow questions asked and answered. The day’s focus was on Mark Andy’s digital printing and finishing workflow offering and we feel the live demonstrations reiterated Mark Andy’s commitment to offering Business Responsive Technologies to help converters reach their full potential.”

Xaar expands product range for UV applications The printhead is ideal for printing UV spot varnish for labels, packaging and graphics, as well as adding textured effects to wood laminate. with a smaller drop size; this can be particularly useful in creating fine detailed effects. For those wishing to print solid white base coats underneath fine halftone images or text, such as companies printing labels or packaging, the Xaar 1002 GS40 can be used in combination with the Xaar 1002 GS6 printhead.

Xaar has announced the launch of the Xaar 1002 GS40 for UV applications. Already proven in the ceramics tile decoration industry, the launch of this printhead into the UV market makes possible a range of high build varnish and textured effects for labels, packaging, graphics and wood laminate. This latest addition to the market-leading Xaar 1002 family of printheads jets drop volumes from 40 – 160pL and has greyscale capability (5 levels). It is perfect for printing UV spot varnish and for applications requiring a high laydown at higher print speeds. And, depending on the drop size, the printhead can lay down extra opaque whites with a larger drop size or a finer base of whites

The large drop capability of the Xaar 1002 GS40 also means it is ideal for printing high build spot varnish or tactile, textured effects, such as wood grain, which improve the visual appearance of edge banding or other wood laminate products manufactured by the décor industry. In addition, the throughput of this printhead surpasses that of any other on the market; this is due to greyscale capability combined with high drop size which deliver a very high volume of ink laydown per nozzle. As with all of the Xaar 1002 family of printheads, this new variant includes TF Technology® which ensures a continuous ink flow at a very high rate directly past the back of the nozzle during drop ejection; this provides unrivalled reliability, troublefree printing and maximum printing and production uptime. The architecture of the Xaar 1002 GS40 combined with TF Technology allows the printhead to perform exceptionally well with a wide range of ink types and viscosities and in varying ambient temperatures. This is particularly important when printing heavily pigmented and higher viscosity inks, such as opaque whites and varnishes. “We are delighted to be extending our UV printhead range to include the Xaar 1002 GS40 which enables our customers to create a wide range of effects that were typically the preserve of other techniques such as embossing. This capability is becoming more prevalent in labels and packaging for luxury products within the food and beverage sectors including high end spirits and wine labeling,” says Alan Mutch, Product Manager at Xaar.

Harlequin RIP upgrades for commercial, digital, high-speed inkjet applications Xitron announced plans to release version 11 of its popular Navigator RIP software ahead of its debut at Drupa in May. Over 30,000 copies of Navigator have been put into production by Xitron dealers and OEMs since its inception. “Navigator is the lynchpin of our prepress independence movement,” said Karen Crews, President of Xitron. “Navigator RIPs drive Computer-to-Plate devices from almost all major manufacturers, including Agfa, Kodak, ECRM, Heidelberg, Fuji, Krause, and Presstek. Most recently, Navigator has become the RIP of choice for driving highspeed inkjet systems from Astro, Neopost, Colordyne, Trojan, and SuperWeb, along with many other Memjet OEMs.” Navigator 11 provides improvements in speed, memory usage, and screening for flexographic printing as well as functional enhancements such as better handling of poorly formed PDF files, specific use of PDF/ VT hints, and export of die-line separations when used in package printing environments. For high-speed inkjet applications, Navigator 11 introduces features to improve speed on image-heavy jobs, increasing productivity so that pages are fed more quickly to the press. Exhibiting at Drupa May 31-June 10 in stand 15C54-4, Xitron will be demonstrating Navigator 11 as the core Digital Front End (DFE) in several different implementations, encompassing each of their market segments. From March 2, 2016 onward, any customer purchasing a version 10 Navigator RIP will be entitled to receive Navigator 11 at no charge when shipments begin.

Jet Press 720S set to take centre stage for Fujifilm at drupa 2016 Jet Press 720S is a proven, high quality digital production system for the B2 inkjet digital printing market.

FUJIFILM has announced that it will be using drupa 2016 as a platform to showcase their Jet Press 720S. Launched as a technology concept at drupa 2008 as the Jet Press 720, the press has benefited from a wide range of enhancements since its commercialisation at drupa 2012. In particular, the improvement in press up-time, the addition of a new bar code system for variable data production and new modular SAMBA printheads added in 2014, together with the ability to handle heavier-duty carton board stock introduced in late 2015, ensure the current Jet Press 720S model is a proven, reliable and incredibly versatile production press. Those printers who have invested in the Jet Press 720S have been able to produce ultra high quality print that could not have been produced with either offset or other types of digital press, allowing them to successfully pioneer new business opportunities with higher profit margins. The Jet Press 720S is now transforming the operations of an increasing number of printers across the World, with the total number of installations now standing at 70.

evolution of “FUJIFILM Inkjet Technology”. The latest generation of SAMBA printheads form the heart of the single-pass system used for high-performance and stable jetting. The wide-gamut VIVIDIA waterbased pigment ink is applied with RAPIC anti-coagulation technologies to achieve ultra-sharp printed results on a wide range of printing papers. Other features include extended FM screening optimised for inkjet and an automatic “On-the-Fly” image compensation function that controls ink deposition inconsistencies. Endorsement of the performance and reliability of these technologies comes from the growing number of Fujifilm customers, and a number of suppliers, not least Heidelberg who have chosen these technologies to form the heart of their recently launched B1 industrial inkjet press.

Over the last decade, the application scope and capability of Fujifilm’s inkjet technologies have expanded substantially, making it possible to meet the exacting needs of commercial and package printing customers. The integration and evolution of printheads, inks and image optimisation technologies is critical to delivering a reliable, high quality inkjet production system. IIJ’s new dedicated Customer Centre to improve customer experience Industrial Inkjet (IIJ) is to open a dedicated Customer Centre to cope with an increase in demand for its print engines and services from across the world. The industrial inkjet specialist is taking on another building close to its headquarters on the same business park in Swavesey, near Cambridge, in the UK.

within their current skill area. Having visited a lot of these customers recently, I realised that many of the customers’ staff have been promoted or have moved on, and the new engineers don’t have a fraction of the inkjet experience that their predecessors built up.”

John Corrall, Managing Director and founder of IIJ, said: “This new building will become a dedicated Customer Centre and forms the next step in our growth plans. Our goal is to concentrate our print sample, training and customer demo functions into a new dedicated building so as to further improve the acclaimed quality of customer experience that we provide.”

He added: “While we don’t mind filling in these knowledge gaps as they appear, what is really needed is to get the new engineers to come to IIJ for our “deep” training courses. These courses – largely aimed at newcomers to inkjet – are also exactly what is needed by new staff working in “expert” companies. But if we are to increase the number of courses we provide then we also need to increase the space and equipment for them. And this is the goal of our new investment.”

He added: “Having just celebrated our 10-year anniversary, it’s an obvious time to review our activities and business strategy. One thing that has stood out recently is that a number of OEM customers for Konica Minolta printheads, who we have worked with for six or eight years, are asking technical details that surprised us. They are asking questions that we considered were well

In addition to bespoke training courses, IIJ will also be providing fundamental engineering knowledge for machine builders. IIJ already provides well received courses on ink testing and printhead parameter optimisation (waveform development). These courses are aimed at ink developers, but IIJ believes each machine builder should have at least one in-house “guru” trained

to the same level. The Customer Centre will also provide training for inkjet operators and maintenance and service staff, as well as providing courses in image processing and colour management. The new premises will include dedicated print sample machines, including IIJ’s XYPrint 300 units, as well as a new large roll-to-roll single pass system fitted with a number of IIJ print engines. The equipment will allow IIJ to simulate many customer’s production environments. Mr Corrall said “The investment will provide a customer demo and training work in a dedicated setting without having to fight for space with our production department, which has been expanding at an increasingly high rate over the past years.” IIJ provides complete solutions for the successful design and implementation of Konica Minolta’s industrial printheads which are renowned for high print quality and reliability. IIJ is official sales and technical support centre for Konica Minolta products outside of Asia.
