The leading international trade fair for print and cross-media solutions kicks off with a new strategic focus and greater frequency running every three years. Under the motto “touch the future” drupa is providing a platform for future technologies with highlighted themes that include print, packaging production, multichannel, 3D printing, functional printing or green printing. 19 halls are showcasing the innovative power of over 1820 exhibitors from 54 countries. “Such a comprehensive 360° view of the entire industry is provided by nobody but drupa,” claimed an excited Werner M. Dornscheidt, President & CEO at Messe Düsseldorf. The mega trend at drupa 2016 is Print 4.0 that enables individualisation and personalisation in digital printing – digital networking of machines and systems offers the solution and guarantee for efficiency and competitiveness. Accompanying technical events include the drupa innovation park, drupa cube, the brands PEPSO (Printed Electronics Products and Solutions), 3D fab + print and ‘touchpoint packaging’. ‘touchpoint packaging’ is a dedicated special show reflecting the relevance of this market and is divided up into four ‘future labs’ namely ‘food & beverage’, ‘non-food’, ‘pharma’ and ‘cosmetics’. “The spare parts business in mechanical engineering or packaging design offer particularly great opportunities for machine producers, users but also print service providers,” says Sabine Geldermann, Director of drupa, regarding another drupa 2016 highlight – 3D printing. The touchpoint 3D fab+print reflects this spectrum. Also drupa visitors should not miss the functional printing future theme present and represented at several locations at the show. At drupa innovation park (dip), young companies and start-ups as well as global players are presented with pioneering solutions. Visitors are exploring trend-setting innovations, solutions and business case studies on an easy-to-manage area. Presentations, lectures and interviews at the “dip energy lounge” round off the ranges displayed by approx. 130 exhibitors. ‘Entertaining, Educating, Engaging’ is the new approach of drupa cube which centres on the innovative power of printing and the multi-faceted possible applications of printed products across a multitude of industries and spheres of life. In addition to two keynotes, it features some 60 lectures by international experts. Our previous issue was the drupa preview issue which had information on many key technologies by key technology providers in the industry. Spokesman-Review looks to the future with IDS-3D The US newspaper Spokesman-Review is to invest in a further round of automation for its printing press. Q.I. Press Controls (QIPC) is set to install the IDS-3D system on its TKS press with two towers in Spokane, Washington. QIPC, the Dutch specialist in measurement and control systems for the printing industry, will be installing 4 IDS-3D register control cameras at its plant in the United States. Before closing the deal with QIPC, Spokesman-Review carried out a thorough investigation into the possibilities and alternatives. In fact, the first contacts between QIPC and Spokesman-Review took place about 3 years ago. “We talked to several suppliers,” says Steve Heidal, Pressroom Manager at Spokesman-Review, explaining how the business arrived at its decision. “We approached quite a few of the references our suppliers had given us and asked them about their experiences. Everyone, of course, seemed to be positive, but much more so about QIPC.” The performance of the systems supplied by the Dutch specialist came out better than the competition’s. “QIPC is competitive priced and more reliable,” Steve Heidal concludes. “What’s
more, the camera is more compact. The socalled brains of the system are in the camera itself, which is what we like the most.” QIPC has also responded positively to the order from Spokesman-Review, which Print2Finish agent Juan Echavarria played an important role in. “It took some time to complete the deal, not least because of the lengthy investigations,” Ronald Reedijk, managing director of QIPC-EAE Americas confirms. “They even looked into whether one of the options was to install a new printing press. Ultimately, it was decided to keep the current press, which was in a perfect state of repair and as good as new, and - not without reason - the organisation came out in favour of QIPC because the client was convinced of our in-depth know-how.” With the IDS-3D, Spokesman-Review is not only opting to use automatic register control, in the future it will also be possible to expand the system to include closed-loop colour control. “And that’s definitely part of our plans,” explains Steve Heidal. “This is a long-term investment. In the first instance we will have the register control installed, then the colour control, and the goal next year is to expand it to two other webs.” Thanks to
the IDS-3D, Spokesman-Review will be able to make significant savings in waste whilst at the same time improving the quality of the final product. Furthermore, the paper had a shortage of personnel on the production floor, so this round of automation will now meet these shortcomings. The IDS-3D cameras will be equipped with AIMS for the automatic cleaning of the lenses.

QuadTech introduces MultiCam TRIM QuadTech has announced a competitivelypriced register control option designed for single width, single folder newspaper press applications. The new Register Guidance with MultiCam TRIM was developed from the company’s proven MultiCam system with over 15,000 installations worldwide. The LED-based MultiCam TRIM camera has the ability to read multiple mark patterns across the web, scanning diamond-shaped marks as small as 0,50 mm. Since no calibration is required, printers can look forward to saving on maintenance costs and reducing downtime, in addition to makeready waste savings achieved through quickly pulling the job into perfect register. Printers also have the option of adding full web cutoff control. Press manufacturer Manugraph India is a long-time partner of QuadTech. Software upgrades and the use of the Heidelberg Service Hotline are also part of the package. Customers do not have to purchase individual licenses. They pay a monthly usage fee depending on the company’s throughput but irrespective of the configuration of their chosen solution. Whereas the hardware required is installed at the customer’s premises, some of the selected Prinect components, such as the Prinect Web Shop, are cloud-based. This makes it possible to achieve automation for virtually every print shop in terms of technology and economic considerations, and it is easy to implement this in actual situations. “Heidelberg makes the Smart Print Shop possible for everyone. With the new usage concept of the Prinect print and media workflow, we are paving the way for our customers and are facilitating the complete automation of their production processes,” explained Stephan Plenz, Member of the Management Board responsible for Heidelberg Equipment.
Open interfaces drive the digitization of the industry forward For several years, Heidelberg has enabled digital systems from third-party suppliers to
be integrated into the Prinect workflow via the Prinect Digital Print Manager. From drupa 2016 onwards, this will also be possible for third-party printing presses and postpress systems. To illustrate this, Heidelberg and Müller Martini will be demonstrating bi-directional data exchange between Prinect and Connex, the data and process management system from Müller Martini, at the trade fair. The generic interface thus also facilitates the integration of saddle stitchers, adhesive binders and hardcover systems from Müller Martini. This will be of particular benefit to graphics businesses with printing presses which have postpress systems from Heidelberg (with Prinect) as well as from Müller Martini (with Connex). “Open workflow systems are a fundamental requirement for the further digitization of all processes in our industry. As an active member of the CIP4 organization, Heidelberg has long been a pioneer in the integration of third-party systems into the in-house workflow. At drupa, we will demonstrate how the industrialization of our industry can be organized efficiently across various different companies,” explained Plenz.

EAE to unveil new command centre for newspaper presses at drupa EAE Engineering Automation Electronics, the supplier of controls and automation solutions for the graphic industry, will show a pioneering concept for the central operating unit which controls a web press: the EAE Desk 7. The new press command centre unites a clear, light and dynamic design with great robustness. The software for the new control console runs on the Windows 10 operating system.
Simplified operation, optimal process visualization The EAE Desk 7, the 7th generation of control console technology made in Ahrensburg, represents a clear commitment to touch operation. Touch screens in portrait format are set into the workspaces on either side of the desk and inputs are now made using softkeys rather than membrane keys. The proven ink zone keyboard, which supports variable web widths and web sections, has been retained. The entire desk surface has
been given a tempered glass protector, which is significantly easier to clean due to the lotus effect. The central, high res (4K) monitor in curved design above the proof copy area measures 1.4 m (55 inches) diagonally. User interface views such as a web press overview, inking and dampening settings, etc. can also be selected there. Double-spread newspaper content can be easily soft-proofed on the large monitor. A scrolling function enables quick moving between pages. There are now fewer monitors on the desk and the operator’s field of vision has been optimized. With fine ergonomic aspects, it has a desk with adjustable height which is done by motorized control and comes with an integrated
footrest. Trays above the touch screen can be used for storing order documents, etc. The closed cabinet in the base frame which is familiar from previous console generations has plenty of space for the control console PC and other computer hardware. “Our new control console helps control the web press more efficiently and gives printers a better picture of press settings and running processes,” says Werner Ringel, EAE’s Managing Director. The EAE Desk 7 will be on show at drupa at the joint EAE and Q.I. Press Controls booth (hall 16, stand A16). Visitors will have a chance to experience the modern touch operation in realistic simulations upfront of the official EAE Desk 7 launch, which is scheduled for mid-2017.

Variable products call for highly variable and modular Print Finishing Systems Variable Data Printing (VDP) today goes well beyond simply printing the name of the customer on the product or switching blocks of text. Businesses that have precise knowledge of their customers and their requirements can produce customized print products that are more closely targeted. With Finishing 4.0, Muller Martini will demonstrate the efficient finishing of variable print products live at drupa 2016 (booth A49 hall 2). The “PDF in, book out” slogan now also applies to variable data at Muller Martini, which is leading the way in technology for automated production workflows. The SigmaLine, the world’s only complete digital book production solution for industrial use, also enables VDP production thanks to three new modules of the Connex data and process management system (VariableProduction, VariableImposition, and VariableBundle). Nowadays, variable printing is no longer limited to customized flyers, personally addressed direct marketing, personalized annual reports and sensitive transaction printing, where individual text blocks or visual elements are switched. Instead, books and examination papers can be tailored to the individual student at universities, and travel agencies can have customized brochures featuring the preferred destinations of their customers printed and finished in runs of one copy. The printing of customized mass products is only half the challenge. The other half consists of the correct compilation of all signatures together with the relevant cover and print finishing using a hardcover bookline, perfect binder or saddle stitcher. All modern Muller Martini print finishing systems are digital ready to ensure the

flexible adaptation of books and magazines (right down to a lot size of one) under the conditions of highly automated lot production in line with Industry 4.0. As a result, all new booklines, perfect binders and saddle stitchers have functions enabling print products with widely ranging content, thicknesses and sizes to be produced highly efficiently, with minimal interventions by the machine operators. The various Connex modules of the SigmaLine enable the seamless production of book blocks with different sizes and folding schemes. The correct cover is then identified accurately at the downstream print finishing machine using a barcode matching system. VDP is also possible at the Presto II Digital saddle stitcher, which enables combined stitching of digital and offset printed signatures on the basis of pure barcode control. Faulty products are automatically ejected to guarantee with 100% accuracy that all magazines conveyed to the three-knife trimmer are complete and have
the right sequence of signatures. The Presto II Digital, incidentally, is a prime example of how variability is not limited to the printing process, since print finishing systems are also designed with variability in mind. The saddle stitcher, which will be presented at the Muller Martini booth, comes with innovative new features that significantly increase the variability of the Presto II Digital by means of automatic adjustments from product to product. The same is true of the new threeknife trimmer solution that will be premiered by Muller Martini at the show. “Customized and personalized products are gaining ground in the field of brochures and magazines too,” says Volker Leonhardt, Director of Sales and Marketing at Muller Martini Print Finishing Systems. “That’s why, with Finishing 4.0, we’ll give impressive live demonstrations at drupa of the high variability and modularity of our innovative systems for saddle stitching, hardcover and softcover production.”

Tichawa presents first CIS offering adaptable resolution For the first time, Tichawa Vision is going to exhibit at drupa. Specialized in the field of high-precision CIS Contact Image Sensors for industrial product control, Tichawa Vision is going to present its new VARICIS designed for demanding inspection tasks in the fields of digital, inkjet and security printing booth (F30, hall 3). The multicolour industrial scanner is the first CIS offering adaptable resolution. What makes VARICIS a unique camera system for quality control is its compactness and scanning speed. VARICIS sensor has been specially designed for the requirements of the printing industry. It is the first CIS with adaptable resolution (1200, 600 and 300 dpi). Due to its slim design and very compact construction, it is possible to integrate the VARICIS sensor into printing machines without installation effort. Another advantage of the VARICIS is the constant view during the entire scanning width via its 1:1 optic. Due to its small distance of approximately 10 mm to the printing object in inspection, the VARICIS sensor generates a distortion-free and
significantly sharper picture in comparison with conventional line scan cameras. Prior to each printing job the CIS system checks if the nozzles are in the right position and if they are operative using a calibration process. If nozzles are missing or adjusted incorrectly, the user will be informed immediately and will be able to correct the mistake. The multicolour VARICIS guarantees for colour stability throughout the whole printing process via its integrated liquid cooling, thereby eliminating colour deviation. Due to the extraordinary line rate of up to 250 kHz and a scanning speed of up to 20 m/s the VARICIS is optimally suited for very fast running printing processes. The sensor is available for scanning widths from 260 to 2080 millimeters.
“At the drupa we’ll meet decision makers from all over the world who are focussed on automated systems for quality control in printing processes“, explains Dr. Nikolaus Tichawa, managing director of Tichawa Vision. “We hope for a successful premiere on the drupa, including various talks and discussions which will give an important impulse to our work.” Tichawa Vision develops and manufactures Contact Image Sensors (CIS) for inspection of flat materials as an alternative to conventional line cameras. The CIS includes in one housing a reading guide line, an optical system, and a light source for highprecision applications, e.g. the printing business. Tichawa has developed a wide range of cameras that offer high reliability in design as concerns power consumption, functionality and size.
Muller Martini presents Touchless Workflow at drupa Touchless workflow functions enable uninterrupted print finishing without manual intervention. With Finishing 4.0, Muller Martini will demonstrate the touchless manufacture of print products in a single pass live at drupa 2016 (hall 2 booth A49). Muller Martini machines’ high degree of automation features seamless connectivity and numerous functions that reduce the need for manual interventions. They can deliver uninterrupted production of digitally printed products – such as using the Vareo perfect binder or SigmaLine book production system. Product parameters can be modified during a job without operator
intervention. Job changes can also be done without manual intervention or through Connex LineControl. The functions are either controlled as part of the machine control system using barcodes on product or through integration with the Connex data and process management system.
Barcode: VDP at the Saddle Stitcher The VDP capable Presto II Digital saddle stitcher can produce fully variable products, such as customized and personalized magazines. All the parameters needed for production are controlled touchlessly via a barcode which ensures that every product is complete and correctly compiled. The sequence of the individual products is also controlled which forms individual bundles that are optimized by mailing route. The barcode triggers the selective feeding of signatures and covers via the feeders and checks that they match the digital content. The fully variable stitching machine and three-knife trimmer enable varying thickness for individual product. In addition, the
whole production run can be recorded in a reporting log file to enable full production control.
Connex: SigmaLine with on-thefly format changes Muller Martini has developed an innovative function by which format changes can be performed at the SigmaLine in a seamless, touchless workflow, without stopping the printing press or needing operator intervention. Once job A is completed, the Connex data and process management system triggers the digital printing press, which briefly suspends printing at full speed. Connex LineControl meanwhile takes care of all changeovers fully automatically (the cycle speed of the cross cutter, perforation, cross/length folding, web division, funnel positioning, reference positions of the camera) and of size settings in the SigmaCollator. Job B is then produced seamlessly. The machine therefore ensures the fully automated changeover of the entire in-line system in perfect interaction with Connex.

applied by inkjet or Aerosol , as necessary, for cost competitive 3D-production of 3-D components. Typically these are only processed today in hot air ovens, mostly offline in standalone production units, requiring much space and much time. For 3-D additive manufacturing processes, higher speed, more focussed local melting of plastic and even metal powers can be achieved with aLITE offering significant advantage if applied to laser or infrared based 3-D processing. aLITE can be easily integrated/adapted into existing handling and automation units or robots, since only the small focusing
processing head has to be adapted there. The LITE-source and power control unit are separated from this, and the continuous energy transfer is achieved through a wavelength dependent flexible light tube.

KBA has strong drupa focus on packaging producers Koenig & Bauer Group (KBA) generates some 70% of its revenue of over €1bn in the packaging market. The press manufacturer is also a market leader in several packaging segments: in folding carton printing with medium and large-format sheetfed presses from KBA-Sheetfed in Radebeul, in metal decorating with the printing, coating and drying systems from KBA-MetalPrint in Stuttgart, and in hollow glass container printing with the digital and screen printing presses from KBA-Kammann in Bad Oeynhausen. The printing press group also entered the huge flexible packaging market with the acquisition of KBA-Flexotecnica in Italy at the end of 2013 with growing success. The

close alliance with HP for the development and production of the world’s largest digital press, the HP T1100S PageWide Web Press, for the corrugated market is also indirectly attributable to the growing packaging market, although in this case KBA is only the contractor and HP markets the press itself.
Coding technology with potential from KBA-Metronic A further key and expanding user field which is often overlooked in the media is analogue (thermal transfer, hot stamping) and digital marking and coding solutions (continuous inkjet, laser) from KBA-Metronic in Veitshöchheim. These systems are mainly integrated into packaging and other production lines, but also unlock potential for printing and packaging plants. KBA-Metronic will demonstrate this on the KBA stand at this year’s drupa. With the combination of the udaFORMAXX separating system and a CO² laser from the laserSYSTEM K series, the KBA subsidiary will present a solution for individually applying addresses to print products and the just-in-time marking of pack-aging.
During printing a laser-sensitive pigment layer can be applied to cardboard, paper, film etc. The laser beam then creates a high-contrast marking. The individual marking of the packaging with a laser can be done at any point in the production chain. Laser marking is reliable, fast, freely programmable and works without any consumables. Given the variety of print solutions on offer, packaging producers will be a core target group for KBA in terms of the exhibits on show at this year’s drupa as well as the raft of upcoming analogue and digital innovations.

Ink Meets Wood Siegwerk presents new range of sustainable inks Siegwerk, provider of printing inks for packaging applications, labels, and catalogues, is now offering its second generation of sustainable water-based inks for paper and board applications – UniXYL. The new product range is partially based on natural resins and provides an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional inks. Water-based inks have grown in popularity and demand. They are characterized by low VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions and lack of flammability, making it easier to comply with relevant regulations. Siegwerk combines this technology with a basis of renewable components. The result is the UniXYL series – sustainable inks offering an environmental benefit. The bio-based resin contained in UniXYL inks is obtained from lignocellulosic bio-mass, which is available in particular in feedstocks from forestry. “As one of the leading ink manufacturers, we want to set a good example and champion the development of eco-friendly inks. At the same time we have tried to reduce the bio-mass obtained from food or feed plants, which we have now achieved with UniXYL”, explains Pierre-Antoine Noirot, Vice President of the Global Innovation Network at Siegwerk. The fact that the bio-mass used in UniXYL is composed of forestry or agricultural waste products is reflected in the product name: XYL hinting at the Greek word “xylon”, which translated means “wood”. While the new ink range is water-based and also contains bio-mass components, customers benefit from the same level of performance compared to conventional water-based inks. “UniXYL is characterized by our typically high standard of Siegwerk quality. It provides excellent printing results with outstanding color strength, great print quality and good rub resistance at stable viscosity,” says Pierre-Antoine Noirot. This printing ink range is suitable for paper and board applications, including those intended for food packaging. It complies with current product safety regulations, such as the Swiss Ordinance. UniXYL has successfully completed several beta trials under industrial
conditions at some customers’ printing facilities. “We are now delighted to be able to offer this environmentally friendly ink to all our customers,” adds Mr. Noirot. Christiansen Print Garanciéres, formerly France Flexo, a preprint specialist for corrugated board applications, was one of the companies that tested Siegwerk’s new water-based ink series. “Operating at the highest standards also means testing new printing solutions that meet future expectations and in particular address customers’ desire for fully renewable packaging. Sustainable processes and eco-friendly materials play an important role in this regard,” Nadine Rodrigues, General Manager at Christiansen Print Garanciéres,
explains. The company has been successfully using UniRICS, Siegwerk’s first sustainable, partially plant-based ink range containing a bio-acrylic binder, and already has won several awards, for example, at the “Concours FlexoStar 2015”, an annual competition organized by the Association Technique Française de Flexographie (ATF). “We’ve tested UniXYL recently, and the inks provided excellent print quality, good color flow, fantastic color strength, as well as efficient machinability,” describes Mrs. Rodrigues the test results. With the motto “We color the future”, Siegwerk will exhibit at this year’s drupa (booth A58 hall 3).

One Flint Group”, Flint Group demonstrates its vast range of products and services at drupa 2016 (hall 08b stand D/12). The product offering ranges from inks, coatings, pressroom chemicals, printing blankets, flexographic and letterpress plates, equipment and solvents, sleeves, up to digital printing solutions. In total, the company has booths in three halls, whereby Flint Group Flexographic Products presents its portfolio. With the FlexoExpert, Flint Group Flexographic Products offers a new certification programme to provide plate makers with much more support for their daily business. With this programme, the platemaking processes as well as the functionality of the processing equipment will be evaluated. A status report is provided, which includes strengths and divergences as well as recommendations for improvement. With the assistance of a Flint Group expert, this action plan is implemented within a defined period of time. Then, after six months, the Flint Group specialist performs
a final audit. By passing this audit, the customer is certified as a FlexoExpert for two years, and his customers can rely on consistently high quality printing plates. The presentation focuses on the nyloflex FTF Digital plate. The plate with integrated flat top dots reduces complexity significantly and enhances efficiency for the reproduction of flat top dots, as it can be processed like any standard digital plate – no changes, additional equipment, processes or consumables are needed. Furthermore, the special texture eliminates the need for time consuming surface screening. Additionally, the plate offers reliable high quality and consistency. Designed for absorbent substrates and water based inks, the new printing plate provides to customers in preprint, beverage cartons or flexible paper packaging the benefits of Flat Top Dots in a simple way. It allows to easily achieve enhanced ink laydown and improved solid ink density on fiber substrates. The new printing plate will be commercially available in the last quarter of 2016.
Another exhibition highlight is the new rotec Lightweight Sleeve, a hard-coated sleeve for conventional plate mounting with adhesive tapes, which offers weight savings up to 40% compared to standard sleeves. With this sleeve, maximum weight limits in the pressroom, shorter and easier press setups, or missing adapter configurations can easily be managed. An aluminum plate seals the entire edge of the rotec Lightweight sleeve. This protects the sleeve from exposure to cleaning liquids, inks or solvents and prevents unnatural diameter growth of the sleeve. The new sleeves are available in rotec Omega Surface Technology for use of solvent based inks as well as with other well-known features like the rotec Stainless Steel Register Ring. The new rotec Eco Bridge with breathable metal ring creates an air pillow to virtually eliminate all tight-fit and sleeve-mounting problems. LED colour matching for medium and large formats JUST Normlicht has introduced the first D50 colour assessment system for the printing industry based on LED. Something that was previously considered to be impossible in the graphic arts industry, will now be demonstrated for the first time at drupa 2016(hall 9 booth 9E56). JUST Normlicht will be presenting the first colour assessment systems for the printing industry based on the latest LED technology to meet ISO 3664:2009. Building on its long-standing experience with LED applications, JUST Normlicht has succeeded in developing an LED colour proof light that is capable of simulating the spectral energy distribution of D50 (CIE) so well, and of meeting the requirements concerning the metamerism index and the colour rendering index, that colour matching to ISO 3664:2009 is possible. The LED systems are likewise equipped for soft proof applications. The dimmable LED light can be exactly adjusted to the monitor brightness. In contrast to fluorescent lamps, where mercury is indispensable, the LED light needs no mercury at all, making it more ecologically compatible than conventional fluorescent lamps. Another decisive advantage is its energy efficiency, which is also accompanied by a substantially longer service life in comparison with fluorescent lamps. LED colour proofing systems from JUST Normlicht are no more expensive to buy than comparable systems based on fluorescent lamps. So, switching to an LED solution pays off from the very first day.
“The Missing Link” – Print. Measure. See. For 40 years, JUST Normlicht has been developing products and solutions to create standardized lighting conditions in accordance with international standards. On drupa 2016, JUST Normlicht will introduce solutions for the implementation of the new ISO-standard. Following adoption of the new standard ISO 12647-2:2013 for a standardized offset printing process, the prerequisites for its practical implementation have now been fulfilled. In the form of Fogra51 for coated papers with moderate fluorescence, and Fogra52 for uncoated papers with high fluorescence, characterization data for offset
printing are now available with corresponding ICC and Device-Link profiles. The definition of measuring condition M1 in ISO 13655:2009, the standard for spectral measurement and colorimetrical computations, created a further important prerequisite. With illuminant D50, measuring condition M1 is based on a higher UV component, this being necessary for measuring papers containing optical brighteners. The updated ISO 3664:2009 is an important standard in connection with the practical implementation of ISO 12647-2:2013 for standardized printing with papers containing brighteners. The standard for visual colour matching is of essential importance in this context. The requirements of ISO 3664:2009 regarding a limited metamerism index in the UV range, and the closer adaptation of the UV component in the spectrum to daylight, have already been met by the JUST daylight 5000 proGraphic fluorescent lamps from JUST Normlicht since 2010. As a result, all JUST Normlicht devices comply with ISO 3664:2009, meaning that, in combination with an M1-compatible hand-held measuring instrument, what you now see really is what was actually measured beforehand. Consequently, there is no longer anything to stand in the way of standard-compliant colour matching in accordance with the new process standard.
Use of LED lamps in general lighting in the graphic arts industry The general lighting situation in production shops and pressrooms has a considerable influence on the colour matching of print products. Shielding against extraneous light and avoiding mixed light at the colour proofing station are essential prerequisites for ISO standard-compliant colour matching. For the first time, Just Normlicht has developed and is demonstrating and LED
lamp designed to replace general fluorescent lighting in production environments. This makes it possible to create standard-light conditions throughout the production area that approximate conditions at the proofing station. LED retrofit lamps already available on the market offer only inadequate colour rendering, and the individual lamps vary greatly in terms of their spectral properties. Another disadvantage of retrofit systems results from their use with imperfectly matched LED drivers, since retrofit lamps are operated on the existing ballast of the fluorescent lamps. This demonstrably has a significant impact on service life. In contrast, the new LED lamps from JUST are operated on optimally matched LED drivers. This entails slight extra expenditure when converting the lighting installation, but it is more than compensated for by a service life of roughly 55,000 operation hours. The new JUST LED lamps rely on the time-proven combination of glass and light, since glass is optically pure and not subject to aging. JUST LED lamps can optimally adapt to different lighting situations and offer highquality lighting conditions at any installation height. The spectral properties of the D50 LED lamps are almost as good as required by ISO 3664:2009 and therefore perfectly suited to use in printing rooms and any graphic arts environments. The influence of extraneous light at the press control station is minimized in this way. Moreover, the energy efficiency – which is generally the argument in favour of switching to LED technology – is substantially better than that of existing lighting installations based on fluorescent lamps. The payback time is comparatively short, especially when fitting out entire production locations with LED lighting installations from JUST Normlicht. JUST Normlicht is presenting its range of solutions at drupa (hall 9 booth 9E56).

It’s a splendid combo – the Anicolor & A75 Rajam Digital embarks on innovative journey by installing TN’s first Heidelberg Speedmaster SX 52 Anicolor Press in combination with a Heidelberg Suprasetter A75 CTP. Chennai’s Rajam Digital, the Print shop which was established in 2008 as a digital print shop specializing in photo albums, later expanded its footprint into commercial printing in 2011. The firm continues to retain a market-dominant position in the digital photo album space in Chennai and the rest of Tamil Nadu. The print shop also caters to overseas customers. The latest addition is a Heidelberg Speedmaster SX 52 Anicolor press, which is also the first in Tamil Nadu.
“On average, we run about 25 to 30 jobs in a 10-hour shift. That’s a pretty good number. The Anicolor lowers costs for short-runs, and generates premium quality output at digital speeds. Our Suprasetter CtP further supports the performance of Anicolor with the seamless plate output.” Viswakumar
The Speedmaster SX 52 Anicolor addition at Rajam complements an existing suite of digital and offset presses and finishing equipment, making it a unique, one-stop solution in Chennai to cater to diverse printing needs. “Heidelberg Speedmaster SX 52 Anicolor is certainly an impressive addition to our portfolio. We see a shift in business from digital printing to Anicolor printing. Many of our customers prefer the Anicolor, because of swift delivery, premium quality and flexible pricing,” beams Viswakumar, a self-taught entrepreneur and passionate printer. The Speedmaster SX 52 is a hybrid press, combining the cutting-edge performance innovation of the XL class with the tried-and-tested Speedmaster SM 52 platform. It is adept at handling short-run print jobs, starting from as low as 100 sheets onwards; this
is possible, because the short, zone less Anicolor inking unit consists of fewer rollers with a dampening system that facilitates quick and even inking. In addition, no tedious inking adjustments are required with the Anicolor, as it is extremely easy to operate. It not only enables a reduction in startup waste to just less than five sheets, but also shortens makeready times to less than six minutes per job. Anicolor offers users the flexibility to deliver first-rate quality at significantly lower costs per sheet for higher runs, which makes the technology competitive vs. digital print products. Ganesh Kumar, Senior Sales Manager, Heidelberg, further extols the merits, “The Anicolor inking unit produces ghost-free printing, by ensuring consistent quality through the entire production run. In combination with Heidelberg’s Prinect color management, Anicolor delivers outstanding results.” Alongside the Speedmaster SX 52 Anicolor, the print firm has also invested in a Heidelberg Suprasetter A7 5CTP. “On average, we run about 25 to 30 jobs in a 10-hour shift. That’s a pretty good number. The Anicolor lowers costs for short-runs, and generates premium quality output at digital speeds. Our Suprasetter CtP

further supports the performance of Anicolor with the seamless plate output. Gradually, we pushed up productivity. Now, we utilize the SX- 52 to its maximum capability,” states Viswakumar, who is also the Vice President of the MPLA or the Madras Printers’ & Lithographers’ Association. Ganesh Kumar adds, “The definite advantage over conventional offset printing can be fully realized while using a Speedmaster SX 52 Anicolor for four-colour, standard commercial jobs in runs ranging from 100 to 500 sheets.” Viswakumar comments on his other
acquisition, “Our Suprasetter CtP A75 reinforces the performance of Anicolor with seamless plate output. The A75 is equipped with highly accurate internal punching systems to provide maximum register accuracy, in turn reducing press make-ready times.” The versatile A75 handle conventional, process less and chemical-free thermal plates, with a productivity of 17 to 22 plates per hour. Production reliability is ensured through the Intelligent Diode System (IDS), which ensures that operation can continue, even if a diode fails. An autodidact printer, Viswakumar also identified a new revenue stream to profit
from Anicolor‘s ability to print on even 4’’ X 6” paper bits. When paper is cut for printing jobs, printers are usually left with 4’’ X 20’’ cutting bits that can be used only for recycling. “But, Anicolor has changed the equation. We use these paper bits to print visiting cards or wedding cards,” says an excited Viswakumar, who calls the strategy “From Cutting bits to commercial prints.” The Speedmaster SX 52 Anicolor can print on any paper with thickness ranging from 0.03 mm to 0.40 mm. It can handle sheet sizes varying between a minimum of 105 mm x 145 mm and a maximum of 370 mm x 520 mm. “It’s a splendid combo – the Anicolor & A75,” concludes Viswa Kumar on a happy note.

KBA plans takeover of die-cutter manufacturer Iberica Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) has finalised a Letter of Intent with Officine Meccaniche G. Cerutti S.p.A. (OMGC) in Casale Monferrato, Italy for the 100 per cent takeover of its Spanish subsidiary Iberica AG S.A. in Barcelona. Iberica with some 60 staff produces medium and large-format flatbed die-cutters for board and corrugated packaging without own manufacturing facilities and until now has mainly been active in Europe and in some overseas markets. The integration into the global KBA sales and service network would greatly improve Iberica’s growth prospects. The planned takeover underscores the press manufacturer’s announced focus on the growing packaging market.
Dr. Giancarlo Cerutti, Chairman and CEO of OMGC commented: “In accordance with the programs of our Group we have decided to accept the proposal of KBA for the purchasing of 100% Iberica AG .S.A and consequently we have signed a letter of intent. Iberica, which is operating in the “sheetfed” packaging world, is no longer strategic for the current product portfolio of Cerutti Group that is more and more focused on “web” packaging equipment. Winning the generation game 3rd FINAT YMC Summit highlights leadership and innovation At the end of April, next-generation leaders of label companies spent three days of learning and networking at FINAT’s annual Young Managers Club Global Summit in Budapest. The YMC was founded by FINAT, the European label association, to support the successors to Europe’s self-adhesive label print industry founders, owners and managers; to create a networking platform for the new generation of leaders; and to grow management expertise at all levels of the value chain. This year’s event addressed two specific challenges: winning the generation game and innovation. The Summit began with a full-day workshop entitled Getting Promoted and Avoiding the Pitfalls of Leadership, led by Elaine Eades and Fiona McNamara, experts in management, careers, and interpersonal skills, who are from Liverpool, UK. The workshop delivered real insights into the way in which the core structure of a company – its people base – can be successfully and properly managed. YMC members assessed their current life status, and then discuss the pain points they are experiencing as successors in their companies. Topics such as the work/life ratio (the family = the business), managing expectations and priorities; and assuming a managerial role were raised,
Success strategies and knowing yourself The workshop went on to examine ways in which appropriate strategies and tactics
for dealing with leadership and change in their companies. It begins with knowing yourself. Being aware of one’s personal ‘make-up’ is, said workshop leaders Eades and McNamara, of real assistance in life – in work situations, with family, and in managing oneself.
Label Academy The opening session on the second day was dedicated to an update on a major initiative in the world of self-adhesive labelling – the Label Academy. Mike Fairley, label industry guru and a prime mover in creating this new opportunity to take part in ‘an organised education and training process’ for label printing, showed delegates how the platform is continuing to grow, with a number of specialist study modules now available. Students can work through these modules individually and take online examinations in their chosen subject, to gain formal certification. The Label Academy has been formally endorsed by FINAT, TLMI in the US, and LMAI in India, and there have been more than 2,000 registrations for the training modules.
Brainstorming on innovation As the label industry at large is challenged to deliver innovation in today’s fast-paced market, the final session was devoted to interactive brainstorming on this subject with practitioner and inventor Johannes Höfler. With his Patent and Founder Company, established in 2014, he and his team focus on out-of-the-box thinking within a disciplined format that can turn innovative concepts
into successful business. In an established industry such as labels, there are more opportunities for ‘intrapreneurs’ to innovate and refresh the organisational structure of a business than there are in new products. Mr Höfler emphasised that innovation is a process that continues from idea through implementation; and it actively involves the whole company hierarchy, from management on down. Lively discussions were held on all elements of innovation, from design to marketing, and creating/enhancing a company’s unique added-value offer. Lejeune concludes: “One or two generations ago, our industry embraced an innovative technology and turned it into a highlysuccessful arena for small, entrepreneurial companies and corporate suppliers. Today, thanks to its capacity to renew and innovate, it continues to grow at above GDP rates. For this growth to successfully continue developing, energised business leadership is essential, and this summit provided some of the industry’s leading talent with insight, knowledge and practical advice that they can immediately put into everyday use.” FINAT YMC President Dana Kilarksa – MD of Slovakian label printers Purgina – added: “We are all the leaders of tomorrow – and our task is to be better than yesterday.”

Yet another successful Technical Workshop by LMAI Technical discussions, networking and expert presentations mark the successful event at Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad hosted the fourth edition of the series of Technical Workshops organised by Label Manufacturers Association of India (LMAI) under the leadership of the young LMAI president Sandeep Zaveri. It was held at Hotel Novotel Ahmedabad on the 14th of May 2016. The LMAI leadership team had ensured that the Ahmedabad printer members have a perfect workshop and networking opportunity.
Neeraj Jagga from Xeikon, briefly dwelled on the reasons why label printers have stayed away from digital printing. He explained why powder toner technology was better than liquid ink digital printing technology. He told that unlike liquid ink that interferes with the chemistry of the paper by penetrating, dry powder of toner sits on top of the paper. Moreover, it is approved by FDA and doesn’t penetrate the paper, especially packaging.
in Labelstocks. He discussed different facestocks, adhesives and release liners and also what effect storage and application temperature has on the final label.
The host for the evening was Jigesh Dani from Maharshi Labels, one of the leading label printing companies in Ahmedabad. He had been instrumental in the successful organisation of the event which was attended by about 90 delegates. The printers and suppliers networked and exchanged views on the current issues of the industry.
LMAI awards distribution function is a standard side event for Labelexpo India held every alternate year.
