FROM THE EDITORS’ DESK Dear Readers, Kodak, continuing on its drupa momentum at LabelExpo India 2016, attracted a lot of attention for its flagship Flexcel NX System. Kodak announced a significant partnership with Sergusa Solutions which carries Kodak’s Packaging portfolio to offer a turnkey solution to greenfield packaging convertors as well as to existing flexible packaging convertors that are using conventional print technologies. NX System was the buzzword at Kodak stall of LabelExpo. Besides, Prinergy workflow was at the helm of affairs especially at the LMAI awards with the winners using the workflow along with Kodak’s NX System and plates. Nilpeter, Moksha, Alliance, R K Labels and Monotech were running Kodak plates for their demos and quite a few NX Certifications were too conferred by Kodak. Labelexpo India 2016 closed its most successful show to date on 20 November. Billed as the largest dedicated label and package printing event for the South Asia region, Labelexpo India amassed the latest technology and solutions available to printers with over 200 exhibitors occupying the show floor. Endorsed and supported by the Label Manufacturers Association of India, All India Federation of Master Printers, Delhi Printers Association and Authentication Solution Providers’ Association, Labelexpo India also hosted the revered LMAI Avery Dennison Label Awards. Many significant sales contracts were inked by exhibitors including: Alliance Printech, Grafotronic, HP, Marks Enterprises, Multitec Aids, Nilpeter, Omet, Vinsak and Xeikon. Kodak’s Thermal CTP technology is helping customers win across Tamil Nadu Earlier this year Kodak celebrated 21 years of thermal imaging technology and its 21,000th computerto-plate (CTP) sale at drupa 2016. Thermal CTP is a major part of Kodak’s rich history in imaging and a primary building block for its graphic communications business today. CTP technology is also testimony to the strength of Kodak’s product portfolio and long-term commitment to the commercial print industry. In India, the print industry continued to build on its healthy growth trajectory with investments in new technology and equipment a key factor shaping the future for the country’s hundreds of thousands of printers. One region, in particular, has characterized this investment trend over the past year. In the southern state of Tamil Nadu, Kodak has seen sharp demand for its portfolio of CTP platesetters with ten customers in 2016 choosing to integrate Kodak’s complete pre-press solution -thermal CTP platesetters, thermal printing plates, and Prinergy Workflow--into their operations. By incorporating this pre-press combination, printers are realizing improvements in productivity, quality, and sustainability, especially when integrating technology like SONORA Process Free Plates. • Digital Plate System in Chennai installed their fifth Kodak CTP, a Trendsetter

Q800. As a pre-press Bureau, their core needs include speed of output and high resolution to meet the exacting needs of their customers. They opted for a highspeed machine (X Speed) that delivers 2400 dpi output at a standard 34 plates an hour. Combined with Kodak plates, Digital Plate System will utilize this advanced infrastructure to expand their business in the market. Frontline Printer in Guindy, which serves the publishing market (newspapers and magazines) added a second Kodak CTP machine with the purchase of a Kodak Trendsetter Q400. Eswari Cards in Sivakasi, which was established over 50 years ago, has carved out a niche in the wedding card market, where they are well-recognized leaders offering a wide variety of options to professional wedding photographers. Recognizing market demand for a higher degree of output quality, Eswaro Cards installed a Kodak Trendsetter Q800 CTP and Kodak thermal plates. In Madurai, Tamil Nadu’s cultural headquarters, a strong economy over the past few years has buttressed the growth of the print industry. Vijaay Offset is taking advantage of this trend and has invested in a Kodak Trendsetter

Q800 for their offset production of stationery, book publishing, and general commercial printing jobs. Olympic Cards is an existing Kodak customer, and they were running an older model of the Trendsetter 800 CTP platesetter. Their experience with Kodak and Trendsetter’s thermal imaging capabilities gave them the confidence to choose Kodak yet again, and they recently installed a hybrid Kodak Trendsetter Q800 CTP with DITR film imaging capabilities. Catering to wedding cards and stationery printing jobs, Olympic Cards is set to grow their business with the help of DITR, which produces consistent, reliable results with sharp image reproduction and exceptional background clarity.

The new installations in Tamil Nadu highlight the trust that the print industry has in thermal plate imaging technology and on Kodak’s ability to deliver on the demands of India’s burgeoning print industry.

Advancing productivity and image quality Workflow continues to steer print production to greater heights as an unsung hero that seldom gets the praise it truly deserves. Kodak Prinergy Workflow is one of the leading prepress automation softwares to keep costs down, while enhancing productivity in any print environment – print after print – be it commercial or packaging, long run or short run, and everything in between.

Unmatched quality and productivity go hand in hand with Kodak CTP platesetters. Award-winning SQUAREspot thermal imaging is a time-tested technology that continues to offer accurate and stable imaging to printers, with added benefits such as geometric compensation, temperature compensation, and dynamic autofocus – all leading to great output with fewer remakes. The result is great prints meeting the highest quality standards, allowing the printer’s business to grow by being more profitable and productive.

Heidelberg creates sound basis to achieve year’s targets Clearly increases net result in the second quarter with operating result (EBITDA) excluding special items increasing from €33 million to €44 million During the second quarter (July 1 to September 30, 2016) of financial year 2016/2017, Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) significantly increased its operating result compared to the previous year, as previously envisaged, and also achieved a clearly positive net result after taxes. After the first six months, the result was still below the previous year’s figures due to sales and the costs associated with the drupa trade show. However, as a result of drupa, incoming orders (up around 6 percent) and the order backlog (up 19 percent) were increased significantly. The Group has thus created a sound basis on which to achieve its targets for the year as a whole. “The clear improvement in the result during the second quarter shows that our realignment is bearing fruit. In view of the solid order situation, we anticipate that the second half of the year will bring a considerable improvement in sales and the result compared to the first half of the year. The targets for the year as a whole therefore continue to apply,” said Dirk Kaliebe, the company’s CFO.

Sales in Q2 at €586 million significantly up on Q1, but still slightly below the previous year

Key Notes : > Positive net result of euro-9 million (previous year: euro-9 million) > Outlook: Sights still set firmly on the targets for the year > Order backlog of euro 765 million approximately one fifth higher than previous year

8

November 2016

Sales and the result in the second quarter were much better than in the previous quarter of the current financial year. Net sales rose by euro100 million compared to the first quarter to euro586 million (previous year: euro599 million). Total sales up to the half-year point were euro1.072 billion (previous year: euro1.162 billion). Thanks to strong demand at drupa, incoming orders for the first six months were up around 6 percent on the previous year’s figure (euro1.323 billion) at euro1.408 billion, while the order backlog at euro765 million was even some 19 percent

higher (previous year euro644 million). As a result, Heidelberg has a good starting base for achieving the anticipated significant sales growth in the second half of the year. Both EBITDA and EBIT in the quarter under review were up on the figures for the previous year. EBITDA excluding special items rose to euro44 million in the second quarter. The total figure for the first half year was euro45 million. Compared to the previous year, the financial result improved both in the second quarter and in the first half year. A positive net result after taxes of euro9 million was achieved. Thanks to solid incoming orders and the increase in the order backlog, Heidelberg has its sights set firmly on its year-end targets for 2016/2017. The portfolio expansion in rapidly developing markets, possible acquisitions and the drupa industry trade show are expected to substantially affect sales performance in the financial year 2016/2017 and the years ahead. The investment priorities in the areas of digitalization, digital printing and services are also expected to contribute to an average sales growth of up to 4 percent per year. The EBITDA margin before special items is expected to remain at the level of the previous year. The company is looking to improve the financial result by reducing the interest burden. The figures for the third quarter of financial year 2016/2017 are due to be published on February 9, 2017.

KBA and Flint seal cooperation on conventional inks Rapida users benefit from tested inks KBA-Sheetfed and Flint Group Sheetfed have recently signed a strategic partnership. The deal refers to the worldwide use of Flint Group’s conventional sheetfed ink series on high-performance KBA Rapida presses. Inks with the seal of quality “Recommended by KBA” can be obtained through the Flint Group dealer network. KBA-Sheetfed recommends the use of different Flint Group ink series for different applications, for example for straight printing (Novavit F700 on mineral oil basis or Novavit F950 on vegetable oil basis), perfecting (F950), general packaging printing (Novavit F1000 WIN Bio), food packaging (Novasens P660 PREMIUM) and a number of special applications such as printing on nonabsorbent substrates or fast work-and-turn. Rapida users who choose the corresponding printing inks from Flint Group benefit from the wealth of experience gained with the individual ink systems at KBA-Sheetfed. All inks are subject to constant testing and, where necessary, are modified specifically to suit the fast Rapida presses. The outcome is constantly high and reproducible print quality – process standardisation is raised to a new level. Dirk Winkler, head of print technology at KBA-Sheetfed: “We have achieved excellent and stable results with printing inks from Flint Group, not only in connection with our

10

November 2016

‘conventional ink’ benchmarking, but also during periodic high-performance tests in the areas of packaging, commercial and Web2Print applications or label printing. And when a product meets our high expectations, we gladly recommend it to our users around the world. This strategy is naturally implemented together with our cooperation partner to the benefit of our customers.” Particular strengths are seen in reduced ink consumption, high colour brilliance and contrast, smooth reproduction, convenient handling and the reliable printing of solids. Equally decisive, however, is cooperation to develop and standardise new ink systems, and naturally the joint support for users, e.g.

in the food packaging sector. As with other strategic partners, KBASheetfed will be working with Flint Group on a global basis. This includes use of the inks for print demonstrations in the customer centre, during training in the company training centre, in the design and development departments, at trade shows and customer events, and for the factory testing of new presses, as well as the inclusion of Flint Group inks in press starter kits and continuous product development. In addition, experts from the two sides will be able to exchange know-how within the framework of joint training measures.

GDMPA felicitates AIFMP new team Greater Delhi Master Printers’ Association organised the felicitation function to welcome the newly elected team of AIFMP. Present at the function were President, Prof. Kamal Chopra; Vice Presidents, Hon. General Secretary, Hon. Joint Secretary and Hon. Treasurer. Shri Vijay Kumar Chopra, Editorin-chief, Punjab Kesari and past President of the AIFMP, was the Chief Guest. Shri Vinod Sethi, President GDMPA welcomed the newly elected team under the leadership of Prof. Kamal Chopra for the year 2016-17. Apart from the members of GDMPA, the event was attended by the

printers including those from Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. The GDMPA President emphasised the problems of printing industries viz., performance and quality of printing machinery being manufactured in India, shortage of trained technical people, increase in paper prices and competition among printers. The Chief Guest appreciated the new team, especially efforts made by Prof. Kamal Chopra towards the cause of printing in both

India as well as abroad. He also appreciated Shri Subhash Chander for being felicitated for the Print Guru Award. Prof. Kamal Chopra stressed upon the need for steps for upliftment of micro and small printers. He also talked about his mission to put AIFMP on international map and invited GC members to the April 2017 meeting in China. The event was sponsored by Hubergroup India, Kwality Chemical Industries, Batra Graphic Machinery, Kapur Graphics and Sanwal Enterprises.

Imposition of PDF files made easy OneVision has announced the release of its 5.9 imposition software “PlugAUTOIMPOSEin”. The new feature “template editor” makes the imposition of pdf files even easier. The high degree of automation involved in PlugAUTOIMPOSEin means that manual input is greatly reduced, common errors are avoided, and valuable time and money are saved. The German software producer has developed two easy and time-saving solutions for PDF file imposition, tailored to customers’ needs. Both the PlugAUTOIMPOSEin and Speedflow Impose programmes are suitable for digital and offset printing with rollers and sheets and offer a much faster processing speed, even for extremely large volumes. The easy configuration of remainder sheets, as well as straightforward creation of imposition

templates are additional advantages of the software solution. The substantial difference between the two software solutions is found in the degree of automation: the PlugAUTOIMPOSEin connection to the Asura “data cleansing tool” and the Workspace workflow management software processes and optimises the PDFs. Naturally this process makes use of the Workspace job ticket function. The page format for an imposition template for PlugAUTOIMPOSEin is variable to a certain extent, and can be automatically transferred to a PDF document awaiting processing. If the document page format goes beyond the defined value, it can be adjusted or transferred to a better-suited imposition template. In addition to the many possible barcode options (e.g. DataMatrix, QR), the “Cut and Stack” option offers users of digital

printing in particular added flexibility, allowing version “1” to be produced cheaply. As a new highlight PlugAUTOIMPOSEin includes the feature “template editor”. The module makes it possible to put together individual templates according to customer needs and to impose them automatically afterwards. The 64Bit architecture supports output files of over 2 GB. In all, PlugAUTOIMPOSEin offers over 1,000 different imposition and printing combinations for the professional page and sheet assembly of books, magazines and job printing. The high degree of automation involved in PlugAUTOIMPOSEin means that manual input is greatly reduced, common errors are avoided, and valuable time and money are saved. Imposition and pdf files have been made quick and easy – also without any OneVision workflow – by implementing Speedflow Impose.

German Print Media Technology Competition selects winner for WorldSkills 2017 in Abu Dhabi Three newly graduated printers put themselves forward for the opportunity to represent Germany at the next WorldSkills in the print media technology discipline, competing in a preliminary selection round entitled “We make world champions” from 23 to 24 November 2016. Florian Kraus from AZ Druck und Datentechnik GmbH in Kempten came away the winner, with Andreas Will from the same company and Jan Jungwirth from Engelhardt Etikett in Nördlingen as runners-up. Florian Kraus will therefore represent Germany next year at the WorldSkills International competition from 14 to 19 October 2017 in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The German competition was held in the Print Media Center of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg). The participants were given two hours to produce a print job revealed to them during the competition. The jury – Harry Belz from Bundesverband Druck und Medien, Dietmar Meier, Head of Training from Mohn Media, and Josef Schmid from the public Berufsschule I in Kempten– scored the participants on their approach to color blending, the total time needed, and the quality of the printed product. The jobs were printed on a Speedmaster SX 52 five-color press with coating unit. Enn Kerner, Managing Director of Grafitek in Tallinn (Estonia), and Roman Silkin from the Technical College for Printing and IT

Technology in Novosibirsk (Russia) were invited to observe the proceedings. Both gained valuable experience from the national competition and got an opportunity to exchange information and ideas with the printing experts. They will be able to put this valuable know-how to use in 2019 when the WorldSkills competition is held in Kazan for the first time.

Commitment to WorldSkills and training Heidelberg is a founding member of WorldSkills Germany e.V. and is sponsoring the national Print Media Technology Competition for the seventh time. Heidelberg

will also be providing the equipment for the WorldSkills competition in Abu Dhabi in 2017: three Speedmaster SX 52 presses – two fourcolor presses and one two-color press – as well as a Versafire CV digital printing system and a Polar cutting machine. “Heidelberg is committed to the industry, and training is an important part of this,” explains Bernhard Nahm, Head of Vocational Training for Media Professions, who is reprising his role as juror and trainer for WorldSkills for the fourth time. The WorldSkills competition requires participants to complete exercises in offset and digital printing. To prepare the German participant, he will receive special additional training in digital printing from Heidelberg before the competition. The increasing digitization in the industry is regarded as an opportunity, one that Heidelberg is consistently promoting. “The WorldSkills competition for industrial and craft occupations center on the Olympic ideal, an understanding among nations, and a test of ability of the best from all the nations. It evaluates the discipline of printing technology and demonstrates the attractiveness of the print media technology as a career path,” asserts Bernhard Nahm. 15 nations will be competing in the print media technology discipline in Abu Dhabi. Participating for the first time will be Russia, Thailand, and Zambia. Over 76 nations in total will complete in 50 disciplines.

market. We also had excellent feedback on the calibre and variety of buyers visiting the show, with many significant sales contracts being inked by exhibitors including: Alliance Printech, Grafotronic, HP, Marks Enterprises, Multitec Aids, Nilpeter, Omet, Vinsak and Xeikon.”

Quotes from exhibitors: K Shula, Atul Paper Pvt Ltd: “We had a good experience at Labelexpo India 2016, the show had more footfall than the last show in 2014. We were able to interact with many people from release liner and label stock businesses from India and abroad, some old and some new. Our products Glassine and CCK from Munksjo with different GSM, width and color were well received by new customers. We had around 80 new business leads during the four days. We were also able to receive the orders for 60mts of material at Labelexpo. Labelexpo India 2016 was well organized and we hope it will be even better in 2018.”

facilitated new business opportunities. At the event, we showcased our diverse portfolio of solutions in the pressure sensitive adhesive business to over 250 visitors, which resulted in many leads. Besides showcasing UV Hotmelt technology, our key technology for labels and tapes businesses, we also showcased Hotmelt, solvent based and water based acrylics technologies. This helped the visitors to get a better understanding of the various uses and applications of these technologies.”

Anthony Cotton, Focus Label: “It was quite noticeable how many visitors were commercial offset companies, not currently printing labels, but looking at moving into label printing. Although some had already researched the market, many were seeing label printing presses for the first time and were amazed by the print quality and efficiency of our equipment.”

Tilkesh Jathan, Loparex India Pvt. Ltd: “Changing the venue itself may have been a risky and herculean task. But, overcoming the hurdles and manoeuvring the show to such professionalism is highly commendable. The best part of Labelexpo India is that it brings all the manufacturers and end users under one roof. It’s not important that we always get the return on investments to the show. But what is important is that the information and knowledge which is shared, are stupendous.”

Vijay Ramachandran, Henkel IMEA: “Henkel India is pleased with the overwhelming response it received at Labelexpo India 2016. The expo provided us a good platform to showcase our expertise in the area of pressure sensitive adhesive business, which helped us to strengthen the existing relationship with our clients and also

Alex Stevenson, Luxul FZC: “Visitor numbers to our booth were higher than anticipated and the general quality of discussion and positive responses to our presentations lead us to believe that Luxul has a bright future in the Indian label and folding carton market. Our strategic alliance with Sunrise Inc and Mr Naveen Mehta, as well as our

decision to exhibit has been fully justified. The technical interchange between our visitors and exhibition staff was ‘brisk’ and interesting, and several common technical issues were discussed – hopefully leading to mutually beneficial future business. Our European technical partner Alex Stevenson noted the highly impressive continuous improvement in quality and technical competence in the radiation curing field since his first visit to India in 1986 – when UV curing was still something of a space age mystery – and was happy to report that the gap which he witnessed back then is closing fast! Labelexpo India 2016 has definitely exceeded our expectations, and we would like to sincerely thank the organizers for their efforts in staging this excellent event.” Hope Hu, Martin Automatic Inc: “Martin Automatic was very happy and received a fruitful harvest at Labelexpo India 2016. The visitors are mostly target customers seriously interested in smart solutions to improve press efficiency and reduce material cost/wastage. We received 70 leads at the show and there are several requested formal offers for their flexo presses and converting lines. The most significant lead is Mr Deekap Duggal from Kap Cones ordered his second Martin Automatic auto splicer and rewinder at the show while his first set of Martin MBS auto butt splicer and auto transfer LRD rewinder just arrived in their factory. Mr Duggal also committed to having his new OMET press equipped with the Martin Auto splicer and rewinder which will be the third set of Martin units in their production facility.” Rekha Sharma, Manroland India: “Labelexpo India is a very professionally organized show. Since we participated for the first time, it was very good experience. Our main aim was branding and image building for Novexx Solution as a separate identity after its disassociation from Avery Dennison. We had some serious buyers too.”

Alan Barretto, Nilpeter India: “Labelexpo India is of strategic importance for us - as India is our home market. Our products are manufactured in Chennai - and as part of Nilpeter’s global development team, we present numerous innovative technical features across the Nilpeter product lines. We are proud to say that our products also now is exported to regional markets. At the show we introduced the new FB-350s where the new platform ensures shortest possible setup waste in the market, including our multi-layer cross-over enabling five-page labels as well as the gravure units for both opaque and metallic coating.” Paolo Grasso, OMET: “At Labelexpo India, Omet met with success by selling two iFlex; a significant international acknowledgement for the Italian company. The first iFlex is to be installed at the new premises of Huhtamäki PPL Webtech Labels in Mumbai at the beginning of 2017. The Finnish group specializes in flexible packaging and is active on the market for more than 80 years, counting 14 manufacturing sites in India. Even Insight Graphics chose OMET iFlex to “re-start”, after a terrible fire destroyed its label division based in Kolkata. We are very glad that two of the greatest and most promising players in the Asian market chose OMET. They understood the value of the technology applied to our machines and how fast they can generate ROI.” Peter Frei, Pantec GS Systems: “As the middle class in India is growing fast,

brand awareness grows along with the welfare. For label printers this means a big business opportunity but also a change towards meeting increasing differentiation requirements. It generated a steady flow of qualified printers who showed great interest and desire to adopt efficient in-line concepts. At the booth, the demo production of an outstanding Tequila label was convincing. Visitors to Labelexpo India became enthusiastic when they saw the 25’000 strokes creating such an attractive multieffect label in a single pass at press speed. We are delighted with the visitors’ feedback that the performance of RHINO™ meets both, the volume and the quality requirements of the growing middle class.” Praveen Gupta, UPM Raflatac: “Labelexpo India is the perfect opportunity for label industry stakeholders to meet each other face-to-face and to catch up with the new advances in the industry. We had a very busy and successful four days on the UPM Raflatac stand, meeting our clients, allied trade partners, and making new, interesting contacts. A big thank you to everyone who came to visit us, we hope you enjoyed seeing our latest product developments for food, pharmaceuticals and other labeling applications as well as our new solutions like the Label Life concept and lifecycle assessment tool. This year, we also had some exciting experiences for visitors, such as a fashion show that turned our label materials into gorgeous fashion pieces. The show was the talk of the exhibition and our stand was chosen as the “stall of the day” on the third day. It was a pleasure to see so many of our customers participate in our gala night, an evening filled with entertainment and networking. Thanks a lot for making the evening a memorable one. We are optimistic about the growth of the Indian label market and look forward to further success at the next Labelexpo.”

Event Review

Kodak@LabelExpo: NX was the buzzword -continuing on the drupa momentum, Kodak brought its drupa success to LabelExpo India 2016. There was a common comment on Day 1 of LabelExpo India 2016 - Kodak has continued on the Drupa momentum and brought Drupa into LabelExpo India 2016. The Kodak booth (L1 @ Hall 5) attracted a considerable amount of attention. It was just the first day of the show, and a relatively slow one owing to various reasons. However, it was a happening day at the Kodak booth.

Partnership with Sergusa Solutions

The demand for high quality, consistent, accurate and reliable imaging means Kodak’s range of packaging solutions – be it the Flexcel NX System, plates, or Prinergy Workflow – was visible in various capacities across the show.

Kodak announced a significant partnership with Sergusa Solutions which will be carrying Kodak’s Packaging portfolio to offer a turnkey solution to greenfield packaging convertors as well as to existing flexible packaging convertors that are using conventional print technologies. Ashis Bhattacharya, CEO at Sergusa Solutions, was at the Kodak booth for a formal handshake with Vidhu Gautam, Regional Business Director for APR and Abraham Prabhakar, Vice President for Packaging Division at Kodak India. Both Sergusa and Kodak see this partnership as one of significant importance, to be able to cater for ongoing growth in the flexible packaging industry of our region with the reputed option of flexography. Sergusa Solutions are excited about this partnership

as Kodak Flexcel NX solution and Prinergy Powerpack Workflow offers them a unique opportunity to integrate their brand protection solutions. This partnership extends to the India Cluster – India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

Kodak Flexcel NX Certification awarded to Kwality Offset, Delhi The other major announcement that Kodak made was Kodak awarding NX Certification to Kwality Offset from Delhi. Kwality Offset diversified into flexography and partnered with Kodak in 2014 from their legacy of offset printing. Since then, Kwality has come a long way to be one of the leading flexo players in the market. Kodak very proudly presented the certification plaque and certificate to Rajeev Chhatwal, Proprietor at Kwality Offset. It was an exciting moment for Kwality Offset as well as Kodak, as this entails that Kwality Offset has now received the mark of a trusted Kodak partner. This is backed by client endorsement (from convertorprinters). Kodak’s Flexcel NX Certification is given to a Flexcel NX customer who has the ability to produce Kodak Flexcel NX plates consistently, meeting certain criteria for plate-making. The performance and quality

pre-press. These include Kwality Offset, Kumar Labels, Letra Graphix to name a few. Also of interest to customers on the booth were the inkjet samples, printed using water-based inks using Kodak’s Ultrastream Inkjet technology. With a promise to take flexible packaging to newer heights in coming months, Ultrastream as well as Extended Gamut Varnish (XGV) saw considerable attention during the show. On day 2 of the show, Akshar NX Digital from Ahmedabad was awarded Kodak’s Flexcel NX Certification, making them the third Indian firm to claim this honour. Akshar NX Digital invested in Kodak Flexcel NX in late-2014, driven by customers’ demand for quality in imaging output. Gradually, as they offered the advantages of NX to the market, they converted all their label and wide-web flexo customers to Flexcel NX plates. Catering to market demand that’s further propelled by the ever-increasing capacity for pharmaceutical packaging, Akshar NX Digital’s Flexcel NX Certification will aid their marketing efforts tremendously. This not only gives them the ability to exhibit highest levels of quality and consistency through this unique certification, but also the marketing boost it brings by positioning Akshar NX Digital as a leading pre-press provider.

are measured and designed to meet exceptionally high levels of performance, and only then is a customer awarded this honour of being a Kodak Flexcel NX certified partner. It means the customer has met high standards for producing quality output. This list of partners is an elite list.

Kodak at the last leg of the show At the last leg at LabelExpo India 2016, NX was the buzzword. The demand for high quality, consistent, accurate and reliable imaging means Kodak’s range of packaging solutions – be it the Flexcel NX System, plates, or Prinergy Workflow – was visible in various capacities across the show. A BIG testament is the number of press manufacturers as well as label printers who exhibited to showcase the best of the best they had on offer, with Kodak powering their operations.

SPGPrints presents solutions for screen and digital label production During Labelexpo India, SPGPrints exhibited high-quality, efficient and productive solutions covering every step in the rotary screen and UV-inkjet printing processes, at the stand it shared with Stovec Industries. The stand, with a workbench preparing live jobs, highlighted the ease of adopting rotary screen printing. The highlighted Retrofittable RSI (Rotary Screen Integration) units can be integrated with almost all label presses to perform in perfect synchronisation, inline with other processes. Non-woven nickel re-engravable RotaMesh and – on nonSPGPrints presses -reusable RotaPlate screens offer durability and stability at up to 100m/min (330fpm). Both screen ranges cover the full range of applications from coarse effects and Braille to fine linework and text as small as 2-point size. SPGPrints’ prepress exhibits offered fast, sustainable and digitised solutions for highdefinition screen imaging. rotaLEN is a direct laser engraving system for imaging rotary screens with resolutions of up to 4000dpi in single step. The engraver’s sealed CO2 laser ablates the printed areas without film, chemicals or water. Its extended engraving width of 660mm (26in) accommodates wider RotaMesh screens or two RotaPlate meshes simultaneously. Files for rotaLEN can be prepared with SPGPrints’ software, providing optimum control when creating fine positive and negative images. The variLEX hybrid laser exposer is a single, digital imaging solution for high-definition flexo, dry-offset, screen and letterpress printing formes. More than 80 percent SMBs are looking to digitize paper-based processes small/mid-size businesses admit paper processes waste time – 8 out of 10 pledge to change in 2017 More than 80 percent of small/mid-size businesses (SMBs) want to cut paper out of the way they invoice, report financials, manage legal and human resource forms, and handle other time consuming processes, according to a Xerox survey. The survey of more than 1,000 companies in the United States, United Kingdom, France and Germany shows respondents expect to make the change during the next 12 months. Nearly half (46 percent) of respondents confirmed that a significant amount of time is wasted on paper-intensive processes and 6 out of 10 view this as having a major impact on their bottom line. SMBs in Germany (51 percent) and the United States (50 percent) cited they spend the most time, followed by the United Kingdom (43 percent) and France (37 percent). As SMBs prepare to digitize their paper processes, most will turn to experts for recommendations since only 1 in 5 respondents are aware of existing paper-free solutions in the market. The study shows that 47 percent will go to an office equipment dealer, 1out of 4will look to their IT reseller and 37 percent will turn to the product manufacturer. “Though this survey did not cover India as a region but we are seeing a similar trend emerge amongst the SMBs here. Not just businesses but the Indian government has made digitization a priority for the nation through their Digital India initiative.” said Balaji Rajagopalan, Executive DirectorTechnology, Channels & International Distributor Operations, Xerox India.

30

November 2016

Balaji further added, “This year, we have strengthened our focus on SMB business segment with the launch of Xerox Docucentre SC2020 and ConnectKey enabled iSeries products besides continuing to extend our Managed Print Services to SMBs through our channel partners.”

Priorities driving business decisions The survey, conducted by independent market research firm Coleman Parkes Research, shows increasing productivity as a top priority for SMBs, along with growth and reduced printing costs. Other findings include: • Overall, 28 percent reported they are well advanced with respect to implementing their plans to digitize paper processes, with France (33 percent) being furthest along. • U.S. SMBs are lagging in their plans to digitize processes with 41 percent citing they have just started, compared to the average (37 percent). • Twelve percent of all SMBs are one to three years away from implementation. • In addition to focusing on digitization and automation, SMBs are also exploring other areas to improve productivity, including: • Managed Print Services (MPS): Of the SMBs surveyed, 42 percent have an MPS contract, while 40 percent said they plan to put an MPS contract in place within the next year. Sixty-six percent spend more than$1,000 USD each month for printing activities, a significant cost of doing business. Companies with MPS contracts cited reduced costs, decreased paper consumption and improved tracking of print costs as top benefits. • Mobility: By the end of 2017, 23 percent of SMBs believe mobile devices will be completely integrated with their workflow processes. Today, 66 percent of SMBs include mobile printing in their mobility initiatives, while 27 percent plan to within the next year. The main drivers include increasing productivity of mobile workers, meeting customers’ needs for remote information, and improved and

faster customer service. Security: It’s becoming increasingly important for SMBs to secure businesscritical information across all technology with the rapid growth of data. As a result, 56 percent of SMBs currently include printers and/or multifunction printers in their security strategies.

SMBs in the United States and Western Europe spend $40 billion USD annually on office equipment and related print services1. Helping these businesses improve their processes has been a major focus for Xerox. The company has introduced a variety of solutions to help SMBs automate processes, improve mobility and reduce printing costs through MPS. Xerox’s ConnectKey technology automates manual paperdependent processes and makes it easier for mobile users to collaborate and work more effectively, even outside of the office. Xerox also leverages partnerships with Cisco and McAfee for a multi-layered approach to securing printers.

Survey methodology 1,021 SMBs with annual revenue ranging from less than $6 million USD to more than $305 million USD took part in a detailed online survey completed in September 2016. The “2017 Office Productivity Trends to Improve the Bottom Line” survey was completed by independent thirdparty Coleman Parkes Research and commissioned by Xerox. Respondents were senior business managers in operations, finance and IT, along with small business owners. The SMBs taking part had between 50 and 1,000 employees, and were based in the United States, United Kingdom, France and Germany. 293 companies took part from the United States.

Confectionery and bakery product packages Standing out from the crowd – but not at any price

As the consumption of confectionery and bakery products continues to rise, so do the expectations of consumers. Not only do they want to be wowed by the taste, but they are also becoming choosier as far as the packaging is concerned. The latter has to catch the eye and provide additional functions while also responding to long-term environmental requirements. And this is forcing manufacturers of confectionary and baked goods to be more creative and efficient. The good news is that packaging producers and machine manufacturers are able to help out with material-conserving packaging solutions and more efficient production lines.

To entice consumer, manufacturers digging deeper into their box of tricks At interpack 2017, 2,700 exhibitors are expected, and some 1,000 of these have named the confectionery industry as a target group for their products and services – and what they will be exhibiting will be suitably wide-ranging.

Key Notes : > The rising consumption and expectations in confectionery and bakery products. > The package is of supreme importance in communicating the brand in the confectionery sector. > At interpack 2017 in Düsseldorf from 4 to 10 May, many more packaging innovations for confectionery and bakery products will be on show.

32

November 2016

The confectionery industry goes to enormous lengths to sway consumers with its products. Packaging chocolate and similar delights in appetising wrappers and allowing the product to speak for itself are no longer enough these days. To entice the consumer, manufacturers today are digging deeper into their box of tricks. The latest trends include fun videos and commercials for their products that consumers

can watch in the process of consumption. One of the pioneers of “snackertainment”, in which the real and the digital worlds merge, is food giant Nestlé. In a marketing campaign with Internet leader Google, it has the red rectangular wrappers of “have-a-break” KitKat printed with QR codes that lead straight to the manufacturer’s own “YouTube my Break” channel. This is where users are entertained in a variety of ways – and thus cleverly hooked by the product. What makes the campaign different is that the striking KitKat logo with its strong brand identity has been removed from its central position on the wrapper for this special edition and replaced by YouTube. In addition, Google’s Android operating system, in the wake of Cupcake, Donut, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean, was given a brand name in the shape of KitKat for the first time in history. It is an open secret in the industry that Nestlé dug deep into its pocket for the privilege. This way the group is underlining something that experts and studies have recently repeatedly found: that the package is of supreme importance today in communicating the brand –

particularly in the confectionery sector. “With increasing product diversity, competition is getting tougher. If you want success on the confectionery market, you have to present your product well,” says Torben Erbrath of Germany’s Association of the Confectionery Industry (BDSI). This applies all the more as the selection of sweets and bakery products at the point of sale is constantly growing. The existing products with traditions going back many years are being supplemented more and more by sugar-free or sugar- and fat-reduced confectionery. The range of confectionery suitable for vegetarian or vegan diets is also on the increase. In addition, confectionery that is gluten- or lactose-free or even halal or kosher can now be found in almost any supermarket. In the snack sector, says BDSI, the palette is growing in diversity and with a huge variety of flavours – whether in nuts, deep-fried or baked salty snacks. “Thanks to this vast diversity, there’s a matching product for every consumer,” says Erbrath. “The package paves the way into the shopping trolley.” Package designers are therefore faced with a difficult task. They have to publicise the snack with memorable slogans across all possible media and showcase it on the shelves with attention-grabbing colours and shapes.

Alternatives to classical packaging materials making increasing inroads into the marketplace When jostling for position, it is best not to overdo it. Because making excessive use of materials and hence resources does not go down well with the consumer. “Customers are attaching growing importance to keeping their ecological footprint as small as possible. And they also have a strong desire for healthy, ultra-fresh foods that also come in high-convenience and attractive packages,” says Andreas Steinle of the Zukunftsinstitut (Future Institute), a think tank for trend and future research. But industry should do without overly flamboyant and elaborately produced packages for economic reasons as well as ecological ones. The cost not only of raw materials such as milk, cocoa and sugar, but also of energy and packaging materials is steadily rising. To lastingly attract consumers who want sustainably produced goods and prevent

the cost of materials and production from spiralling out of control, industry has no alternative but to economise on materials and above all avoid excessively extravagant packages while also reducing energy input in production. The fact that material downsizing is possible is illustrated by studies by pacproject, an international firm of consultants. As an example, it has taken a close look at the historic Corny muesli bar wrappers and discovered that the product’s aluminium barrier film wrapper has been steadily reduced in the last 30 years and finally replaced by a new composite barrier material – without detriment to the product. “Even without full barrier protection, the Corny bar was still in a very good qualitative condition at the end of its sell-by date. And this raised the question whether the cereal bar actually needs the level of protection and barrier effect provided by current films,” says pacproject packaging engineer Alexander Witt. Alternatives to classical packaging materials like aluminium and plastics are already making increasing inroads into the marketplace. Under its Greenbox label, Bionatic, for example, has developed its first range of some 250 different packaging solutions using renewable or recycled resources such as wood, cellulose, bioplastics and palm leaf. Many of these solutions are biodegradable or can be incinerated pollution-free, says Bionatic founder Robert Czichos. And their production is straightforward: “A single leaf is converted into package by first cleaning it with a highpressure water jet. And then it is moulded on exposure to heat in a mechanical press. So it’s a kind of deep-drawing process. This is followed by finishing in which the edges are smoothed and the surfaces polished. And that is pretty well it.” Meanwhile scientists are searching for further alternative materials. In the context of its ThermoWhey project, the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging (IVV) is working on a production process for barrier coatings made of whey protein capable of replacing conventional oil-based polymer coatings. The advantage of whey is that its ingredients are naturally capable of extending the shelf life of foods. However, whey is heat-sensitive, so researchers first have to find a coating formulation that can also be processed at high temperatures.

Packaging innovations for confectionery and bakery at interpack 2017 At interpack 2017 in Düsseldorf from 4 to 10 May, many more packaging innovations for confectionery and bakery products will also be on show. 2,700 exhibitors are expected, and some 1,000 of these have named the confectionery industry as a target group for their products and services – and what they will be exhibiting will be suitably wideranging. Machine manufacturers will also be present in Düsseldorf with numerous innovations. “Manufacturers of foodprocessing and packaging machines accord high priority to handling natural resources responsibly and managing their processes with minimal environmental impact. They know how important sustainable production processes are for customers,” says Vera Fritsche, expert at the association for food processing machines and packaging machines within VDMA (Mechanical Engineering Industry Association). In confectionery production, Fritsche continues, there is still plenty of room for optimisation. Intelligent control and automation technologies and energy-efficient drives, compressors, fans and pumps are some of the classical solutions for saving electricity and other resources and boosting energy-efficiency. Efficient motors perfectly adapted to machine movements and acceleration processes reduce power consumption. In addition, says Fritsche, innovative and optimised processes cut the consumption of energy and water, while innovative machine designs extend service and maintenance intervals and service life and thus save energy. Swiss plant manufacturer Bühler, one of the prime movers in efficient processing solutions, has set itself the goal of reducing

energy consumption in all of its core processes by at least a further 20 per cent by 2020. “This way we can both raise the energy-efficiency of our products and also do our bit for environmental protection at the same time,” says Ian Roberts, the Group’s Chief Technology Officer. He sees a central aspect here in productivity – by shortening cycle times, for example. Additionally, Bühler is redoubling its efforts to improve the energy efficiency of existing customer installations. Because of the numerous process steps such as cleaning, roasting, debacterising, crushing and grinding the cocoa beans, chocolate manufacture is highly complex and costly. Bühler pledges to slash energy costs in cocoa processing by 65 per cent if customers make use of the company’s free energy audit and also adopt its shell burning technology. The audit is used for tracking down energy leaks in the production process. As an alternative to the direct disposal of the shells, the new combustion system exploits the energy obtained from the shells for roasting and debacterising, so no heating energy has to be bought in. Theegarten-Pactec is also pushing vigorously ahead with machine solutions that help customers cut their costs. The company is focusing among other things on “Industry 4.0”, i.e. the digitalisation of production and streamlined human-machine and machinemachine communication with the aid of the latest software. “Making production processes transparent, keeping key data retrievable at all times, analysing them correctly and ultimately deciding on the appropriate course of action holds great potential for boosting efficiency,” says Markus Rustler, Theegarten’s Managing Partner. For this purpose, the company started back in 2011 to overhaul its user interface and the associated data processing for the machine operator and management. “We have thus created a platform that makes the performance of our systems more transparent. For example, it is possible to establish correlations between efficiency losses and time, ambient temperature or other parameters. And this helps operators to track down errors and to find their own solutions,” says Rustler. Furthermore, the intuitive support of maintenance and cleaning processes has been optimised – with active service and maintenance interval reminders from the machine itself, for example. The advantage of automation and digitalisation

is that the machinery linked into complex communication systems can be operated by fewer operators, in some cases even only one. And by integrating the user interface into mobile consumer devices, the data from the machinery can be accessed and even edited from anywhere in the world, says Rustler. The Swiss company Knobel Maschinenbau, a specialist in machines for chocolate manufacture, helps producers to cut costs in other ways. It sells its equipment – moulding lines, stand-alone depositors and other devices – on the modular principle so that customers can extend their production step by step and, if required, re-equip their production locally segment-wise. This offers

them high flexibility and thus permits rapid and efficient changeover to new products. Swift re-equipping has also been made possible by simply integrating new machines in the system on the plug-and-play principle, Knobel explains. With numerous efficiency-boosting innovations, machine manufacturers have attuned themselves to the requirements of manufacturers of confectionery and bakery products. This gives the latter plenty of scope not only in their choice of packaging materials, but also in the modernisation of their lines. And at interpack, they can find out all about these innovations.

The MK1060 YM equipment is a compelling value-add to our business model and portfolio,” says Mr. Saket Kanoria, Managing Director and who spearheads operations at TCPL. The Kanoria family, in addition to promoting TCPL, has diverse business interests including, jute, tea, textiles, pharmaceuticals and chemicals. In 1990, the family ventured into manufacture of folding cartons from a facility in Silvassa. The MK1060 YM, manufactured by Heidelberg’s Joint Venture partner, MK Masterwork Machinery, China, is designed to handle large-format die cutting and foilstamping requirements with longitudinal and transversal foil pull systems. An advanced

vacuum feed table can substantially enhance sheet feeding stability, while electronic controls help reduce operator workload and make the feeder unit user-friendlier. A quick return on investment, the equipment can handle substrates with thickness ranging from 90 gsm to 2000 gsm “We hope the MK1060 will meet our performance expectations. The fact that Heidelberg has an extensive service network in India also helps,” adds Mr. Saket Kanoria. Lalitkumar Lamba, Product manager for Heidelberg, Postpress Packaging solutions, states, “The stamping section of the MK1060 comes with a foil advance system consisting of 4 advance shafts, which ensure that the foil unwinds with an error tolerance of 1 mm, resulting in foil savings. The foil wind unit is capable of maintaining stable foil tension at high speed. The honeycomb chase is made of special thermal resistant materials. The heated bed consists of 20 heating zones

which gives accurate heating properties on complicated foil stamping jobs.” A lower plate made of high quality materials improves foiling and embossing makeready times, making the MK1060 YM ideal for repeat jobs, thereby improving profitability. The lower plate is equipped with a central registration system to reduce plate changing, positioning and adjustment times dramatically. The MK pneumatic locking device locks the plate framework automatically without the need for tools, saving time for the operator. TCPL has also made a foray into the flexible packaging segment to supply cork-tipping paper, laminates, sleeves and wrap-around labels, as reinforcement to its traditional product lineup that includes folding cartons, printed blanks and outers, litho-lamination, plastic cartons, blister packs and shelf-ready packaging.

Direct Printing on the verge of a breakthrough? drinktec 2017 shows trends of labeling and equipment technology.

Labeling and equipment technology is a subject area in the field of tension between marketing experts, designers, paper and foil manufacturers as well as technicians in bottling plants. Congruent demands must be brought together if the desired result is to be achieved. Without one of them, the other cannot succeed, and vice versa. The reason is that a label is the “brand ambassador” at the point of sales. Everyone involved in the process of creating a container design, exhibitors as well as visitors, gather at drinktec 2017, a leading trade fair for the beverage and liquid food industry, in Munich from September 11 to 15. Trends are made there that these trends affect the market over the next few years.

The label serves to produce a direct sales approach at the point of sale and creates the recognition effect of a brand. Packaging and labeling technology will occupy considerable space at drinktec.

Key Notes : > The label is the ‘brand ambassador’ at the point of sales. > Bottle design is advertising, and that is highly individual. > Serialization combines customization of products with traceability of product paths.

November 2016

The beer bottle or the soft drink container is on the shelf and waiting for its buyer. In addition to the price and type of container or the sales package, the label is the only selection criterion. It serves to produce a direct sales approach at the point of sale and creates the recognition effect of a brand. Packaging and labeling technology will occupy considerable space at drinktec. Approx. 50 percent of exhibitors will present packaging solutions, which is unique in this range. In addition, drinktec has created a dedicated area (Hall A2) with the World of Labels specifically for manufacturers of labeling technology and labels. Stefan Richter, Head of Inspection and Labeling Technology at Krones AG, Neutraubling, considers

drinktec to be an “essential trade fair, also thanks to holding it once every four years. It is completely international and attracts a global audience almost magnetically. For Mr. Krones, it is also a platform to capture the mood of the market and to obtain valuable feedback from the customers around the world.” The supporting program is also addressing this issue. The top issues of the future in the packaging area are dealt with in the Innovation Flow Lounge and in the field of packaging technology at the drinktec forum. “We see both old friends and new customers from around the world at drinktec as the world’s largest industry gathering. This an opportunity that we gladly want to take advantage of!” stated Prof. Matthias Niemeyer, CEO of KHS AG, Dortmund.

Module machines and self-adhesive labels “The marketing departments in the beverage world want maximum flexibility,” Stefan Richter stated. “Bottle design is advertising, and that is highly individual. Consumers like to rely on the first appearance of a product when they make purchases, and manufacturers can support this with the appropriate design. As a producer of labeling machines, we experience first-hand that the quantity of ordered module equipment is increasing steadily

pressideas/ plc

continuing and will grow even more,” Prof. Niemeyer stated and emphasized direct printing specifically in this context: “The industrial implementation of a digital printing process with low migration and UV-curing inks, which provide a food-safe solution for PET bottles, is very interesting in this area. Bottlers save material with the direct printing method and can flexibly implement a new look for a container at short notice.” from year to year.” Bottlers have all options open with module machines. Different labeling units of almost any kind can be docked, regardless of whether for cold glue, hot glue or self-adhesive labels. As a result, beverage manufacturers remain flexible in their choice of designs even years after a large investment decision. The trend in labeling plastic containers is toward increasingly thinner foil in the PET segment. Another interesting development is represented by pre-glued sleeve labels. Special self-adhesive labels offer many customization options. They are now no longer limited to nonreturnable packaging, but instead have also become successfully established on returnable bottles in the beer, water and soft drink area as wash-off labels. The self-adhesive label is removed in the bottle washer, and then the container can be refilled and labeled anew. “Higher product diversity, short changeover times and smaller batches,” Mr. Richter explained summarizing trends in bottle design.

Highly individual solutions thanks to direct printing This trend is also in line with direct printing. Regardless of whether PET, HDPE, metal (can) or glass, round container or shaped bottles, digital printing can be applied almost anywhere and provides highly customized solutions. It is all a matter of chemistry between ink and container material. “The print quality of direct printing is getting better all the time, and the speed is increasingly faster,” according to Mr. Richter. In addition to the general trend to reduce packaging material and toward increased sustainability, the market is also changing in the area of labeling and design technology. “The trend toward individual bottle design is

A new trend: serialization Another trend in the beverage industry supports labeling technology, i.e., serialization. Strictly speaking, this is the transformation of an object into a byte stream. This term from computer science combines two requests from the industry: the customization of products on one hand and the traceability of product paths on the other hand. “For example, labeling technology makes it possible with the application of a QR code on a container to individualize it and trace the product path via use of the code by a consumer,” Mr. Richter explained. The customer in turn has the option of checking the originality and authenticity of the product using a smartphone to scan the QR code. At the same time, his action is forwarded to the manufacturer who can then enter into the desired interaction with the consumer. What Google, Amazon and Co. can do today can become a reality for the beverage industry tomorrow. In other words, the Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, is becoming a topic for beverage manufacturers. RFID technology, the “identification with the aid of electromagnetic waves”, has already been introduced in the beverage industry. It serves for authenticity protection on one hand and anti-theft protection on the other hand. In a southern European country, for example, a well-known whiskey distiller consistently employs RFID technology in its high-quality products. An RFID transponder is hidden in the back label, which can trigger an alarm at an attempted theft, for example. “Using RFID technology is very easy with modern labeling technology. However, transponder costs remain an issue,” Mr. Richter added. Despite all the new developments, there is continuity to see at drinktec 2017. The good old paper label definitely still has a future. It can be processed at high speeds, looks good and will remain in the market for the foreseeable future.

drinktec drinktec has been held in Munich since its premiere in 1951. A four-year event cycle was introduced in 1985. drinktec is the most important trade fair for the sector. Manufacturers and suppliers from all over the world meet up here with producers and distributors of beverages and liquid foods. All sizes of company are represented at drinktec: global operators and SMEs alike. The future is mapped out at drinktec. This event is regarded as the number one platform for launching new products on the world market. Here manufacturers present the latest technology for processing, filling and packaging all kinds of beverages and liquid food—raw materials and logistics solutions included. The themes of beverages marketing and packaging design round off the portfolio. drinktec 2017, which takes place at the Messe München exhibition center in Munich from September 11 to 25, 2017 expects to attract around 1,600 exhibitors and 70,000 visitors. Around two-thirds of the visitors come from outside Germany. drinktec 2017 will take up 14 exhibition halls, covering a total of 150,000 square meters of space.

SIMEI In 2017, SIMEI, a leading exhibition for wine technology, is being held for the first time as an integral part of drinktec. Organized by the Unione Italiana Vini (UIV), SIMEI has a long tradition. It has been held in Milan since 1963. Following an agreement with Messe München, SIMEI will be retaining its two-year cycle, but its venue will alternate between Italy and Munich. At drinktec 2017, on a dedicated SIMEI exhibition space comprising at least 20,000 m2, SIMEI will be showcasing all kinds of machinery, technology and equipment for the production and processing of wine, plus also packaging solutions. Messe München is one of the world’s leading trade-show companies. It organizes about 40 trade shows for capital and consumer goods and key high-tech industries in Munich alone.

Cosmo Films launches Universal Lidding Films for all thermoformed plastic containers Cosmo Films, manufacturer of speciality BOPP films has launched BOPP based Universal Lidding Films suitable for heat sealing to any of the rigid thermoformed cups/containers made up of PP/HIPS/PET/ PVCor PE. The films are generally used for lidding of unit packs of packaged drinking water, juice, yogurt, jelly, jam, marmalade, butter etc., as well as trays used for packing salads, meals and fresh fruits etc. Generally, different lidding products available include aluminum foil/PE or PET/ PE structures. BOPP lidding, however scores better than them in terms of sustainability and yield and also is better in cost, aesthetics and fold/flex resistance. These films are available in white opaque cavitated & semi-transparent variants. BOPP film based lids are safe for direct food contact as no solvent is involved and ingredients involved in the manufacturing of this product are approved by FDA. The films offer excellent peelability, printability with water & solvent based inks and high aesthetic appeal. The films offer good moisture barrier properties and offer other high barrier capabilities also. The films can

be easily die cut & punched and display good stiffness for dispensing. The films can be used for both in-line and offline lidding processes. The product is available in standard thickness of 50, 75 and 85 microns. Other microns are also possible on demand. Commenting on the development, Mr Pankaj Poddar, CEO Cosmo Films said, “We saw both end consumers and printers facing challenges while using unit packs especially

for packaged drinking water. The consumers invariably found it challenging to peel open the pack without spilling and the label printers faced issues with finding the right adhesives for heat sealing of the lidding film. Looking at the need gap, we have developed a cost effective universal product where all that the printer needs to do is to print, die cut and supply the film to the brand. The film can also be sealed at lower sealing temperatures of 140-150 degrees”.

Global Bioplastics production capacities continue to grow despite low oil price Stronger political support needed to realise full potential of bio-based materials in Europe The results of European Bioplastics’ annual market data update, presented at the 11th European Bioplastics Conference in Berlin, confirm a stable growth of the global bioplastics industry. “The market is predicted to grow by 50 percent over the coming years despite the low oil price,” says François de Bie, Chairman of European Bioplastics. The global bioplastics production capacity is set to increase from around 4.2 million tonnes in 2016 to approximately 6.1 million tonnes in 2021. Packaging remains the largest fields of application for bioplastics with almost 40 percent (1.6 million tonnes) of the total bioplastics market in 2016. The data also confirms a decisive increase in the uptake of bioplastics materials in many other sectors, including consumer goods (22 percent, 0.9 million tonnes) and applications in the automotive and transport sector (14 percent, 0.6 million tonnes) and the construction and building sector (13 percent, 0.5 million tonnes), where technical performance polymers are being used. “The data illustrates an important trend, driven by changing consumer demands, to make plastic products more resource efficient and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the dependency on fossil resources,” explains de Bie. “This trend is the result of substantial investments in research and development by the many innovative small and large companies that concentrate their strengths on the development of biobased products designed with the circular economy in mind.”

Bio-based, non-biodegradable plastics, such as polyurethanes (PUR) and dropin solutions, such as bio-based PE and bio-based PET, are the main drivers of this growth, with PUR making up around 40 percent and PET over 20 percent of the global bioplastics production capacities. More than 75 percent of the bioplastics production capacity worldwide in 2016 was bio-based, durable plastics. This share will increase to almost 80 percent in 2021. Production capacities of biodegradable plastics, such as PLA, PHA, and starch blends, are also growing steadily from around 0.9 million tonnes in 2016 to almost 1.3 million tonnes in 2021. PHA production will almost quadruple by 2021 compared to 2016, due to a ramp-up of capacities in Asia and the USA and the start-up of the first PHA plant in Europe. With a view to regional capacity development, Asia will further expand its role as major production hub. In 2021, more than 45 percent of bioplastics will be produced in Asia. Around a quarter of the global bioplastics production capacity will be located in Europe. Bioplastics are a growing, innovative industry that offers solutions for a sustainable plastics economy and that plays a key role in the transformation to a bio-based circular economy. Yet, despite these advantages, the data shows that the overall growth of the global bioplastics industry is currently being slowed down by the low oil prices and a lack of political support for the bio-based economy. “A European policy framework that secures equal access to bio-based resources within the bioeconomy and that creates a level playing field for bio-based materials and conventional materials is of paramount importance,” says Hasso von Pogrell, Managing Director of European Bioplastics. “As is the acknowledgement of the facilitating role of compostable plastics and other innovative materials designed for circularity during their use and end-of-life for making waste stream management more efficient. We therefore urge EU legislators to consider the many benefits of bio-based

materials in the implementation of the EU Circular Economy Package and to support initiatives to develop a global carbon-pricing mechanism to incorporate the external costs of climate change into product prices and that way enable the market penetration of greenhouse gas saving materials like bioplastics,” concludes von Pogrell. The market data update 2016 has been compiled in cooperation with the research institute nova-Institute (Hürth, Germany).
