Paramount Art Prints got established in Mumbai in 1987 as Paramount Associates. It came up with an entire new facility at Bhiwandi, Thane in the year 2007 and would cater to the printing demand for cartons, catch covers, labels & inserts. The total working area spanning two floors amounts to 24000 sq. fts. The unit is well equipped with complete in-house facility to provide cost effective solutions, meet high quality standards and maintain strict delivery schedules. It’s a 2-shift working organisation manned by well qualified dedicated team with exclusive quality control department keeping a regular keen eye on each and every stage of production, thus ensuring minimum wastage. An In-house ink matching center from Siegwerk Inks ensures proper matching of Pantone shades and avoids production time loss. Furthermore, the carton gluer is equipped with Pharmacode reader that eliminates colour missing and mix-ups – a major issue in carton production. The Bobst Folder Gluer with Accu Braille and the Autoprint Checkmate 50 Fully Automated Carton Inspection machine are the latest additions in Paramount’s quality maintenance measures.

Autoprint Checkmate 50 – a perfect ‘make in India’ product Paramount Art Printers, based in Bhiwandi recently installed an Autoprint Checkmate 50. Mr. Surendra is pretty enthusiastic about his new installation. “The Checkmate 50 is our perfect ‘Make in India” product. We found it more trustworthy than similar available products especially the Chinese machines,” he says. “The recent Autoprint Checkmate 50 Fully Automated Carton Inspection machine will ensure 100% defect free cartons, which will be a major requirement for the pharma industry in the days to come. We are the second in Western India to do so as on date.” The total business share of the Pharma at Paramount Art Printers amounts to about 80%. The rest 20% goes to the FMCG sector. Paramount manufactures and supplies printed cartons to Pharma companies for their supplies to regulated market. “The Checkmate 50 is going to complement our capabilities – with the help of Checkmate 50 will be able to supply 100% defect free cartons,” says Surendra.

“Pharma companies are paying heavy penalties in regulated market due to defects in packing material. The defects are like broken text, colour spots, missing text, colour missing, Braille dot missing etc. With the installation of Autoprint Checkmate 50, we are able to supply 100% defect free cartons to our customers,” explains Surendra. “Manual inspection does not provide 100% defect free cartons,” he adds. What attracted Surendra the most about the Checkmate 50 was its compact size. “Moreover, it is a user-friendly, easy-tooperate, cost-effective, offline capable and customized to meet our all requirements,” he adds. He is particularly appreciative of

Along with the Autoprint investment, Paramount has added an Expertfold Folder Gluer with online Accubraille from Bobst India.

The Checkmate 50 is for offline use and that’s what Paramount is using it for. They use it for checking in their carton production business. The present turnover of Paramount Art Printers is Rs.21cr and they have set a Rs.25cr target for next year.

It’s already 4 months since the Autoprint Checkmate 50 installation at Paramount. Surendra doesn’t have any complaint and is quite happy. “Though it’s our first Autoprint installation, the experience has been very good in all respects. Deliveries are moving faster because checking has become faster. Manual dependencies have reduced drastically,” he says. He considers his Checkmate 50 as an added quality service to his clients. “With this kind of service you always get an upper edge from other suppliers as you become most preferred vendor,” he contends. “Once your client is happy, it means more business for you. Moreover, the customers

Paramount facility has been approved by the Indian Pharma giants for their supplies to European and US markets as per the norms laid down by the MHRA and US FDA. Today, the company also exports cartons to Australian Pharma companies. Surender doesn’t have any plan to invest in more equipment in next one year. However, he keeps his options open while keeping an eye on his client’s requirements. The investment could be another Autoprint since he had great experience working with Autoprint people especially, Mr.Suresh and Mr.Ashok. “It’s a great experience associating with them,” praises Surendra. He has great expectations from his Checkmate 50 and sees the return on investment as ‘more business, increased turnover and increased profits’.

NPES receives U.S. Department of Commerce International Trade Administration Award Three-year Award Supports Printing, Publishing, and Converting Industry Efforts to expand U.S. exports with Indonesia NPES, The Association for Suppliers of Printing, Publishing and Converting Technologies has announced that the International Trade Administration’s (ITA) Market Development Cooperator Program (MDCP) awarded the Association a grant to open an international office in Indonesia to facilitate and significantly boost exports by the printing, publishing, and converting industry to Indonesia. Over the next three years, these funds are projected to generate an estimated $28 million in exports to Indonesia by NPES members across the United States. Indonesia, with the world’s fourth largest population and Southeast Asia’s largest economy, is a rapidly growing print market attributable to: an expanding, educated middle class; developing macroeconomic conditions; and, regulatory ease of trade for NPES members’ products. U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Stefan M. Selig stated, “With 96 percent of the world’s consumers living outside of our borders, exporting is a sure path to growth, prosperity and goodpaying jobs.” He added, “NPES recognizes the positive impact exporting can have on the bottom line for their member organizations. MDCP awards to groups like NPES are part of President Obama’s government-wide strategy to strengthen America’s economy by increasing exports.” Each MDCP award winner pledges an investment of at least two-thirds of the project costs and to sustain its project after the initial MDCP award period ends. The funded project will allow NPES to expand U.S. exports by: 1) opening an office in Jakarta; 2) developing programs to help U.S. firms participating in trade shows and trade missions abroad; and, 3) providing technical training and education for the print industry in Indonesia. Each MDCP award includes financial and technical assistance from ITA to support well-defined business plans aimed at strengthening an industry by increasing exports. Additionally, MDCP partnerships

12

October 2015

between ITA and non-profit industry groups help to create U.S. jobs through exports. NPES President Ralph Nappi said, “We are delighted to receive this MDCP award from the U.S. International Trade Administration. It will support and expand NPES member companies’ international trade efforts in Indonesia, an emerging growth market for the graphic communications industry.” This is the fourth time NPES has received this competitive award. Earlier awards have been used to open successful offices in China and India, as well as a training center in China. This year, of the 31 applications submitted, only five non-profit industry groups received MDCP awards. In total, these projects are expected to generate more than $653 million in U.S. exports over the next three years in return for the one-time $1.4 million Federal investment. Since the Market Development

Cooperator Program’s inception in 1993, ITA has issued 141 awards to 108 organizations in 32 states. The program has helped to generate more than $9 billion in exports. In an average year, MDCP projects generate $595 million in U.S. exports. NPES is a U.S. trade association representing more than 600 companies nationwide that manufacture and distribute equipment, software and supplies used across the workflow of printing, publishing and the converting process. NPES is a partner in the Graphic Arts Show Company that sponsors the global PRINT exhibition and GRAPH EXPO. NPES offers members a wide range of services including: informational publications; statistical, market research and education programs; government affairs representation; safety and technical standards development coordination in the national and international arenas; and, international trade assistance.

3D fab+print touchpoint for drupa 2016 3D printing up close: Innovation, vision & best practices

3D printing is the technology that everyone in the print community is talking about. Additive production processes are on the minds of users in the design and packaging industries, machine and plant construction, aerospace, automotive construction and dental and medical technology the world over. So futuristic 3D printing has an important role to play at drupa 2016. “drupa’s realignment is shifting the focus towards innovation in the sector and providing a special platform for pioneering interdisciplinary technologies like 3D printing,” says Sabine Gelder-mann, Director of drupa. Numerous “traditional” exhibitors like HP, Leapfrog, Mimaki, Roland, Ricoh, Xerox and TU Chemnitz are already looking into this technology and will be presenting exciting solutions. First movers like Stratasys and Massivit 3D Printing will also be attend-ing drupa 2016. “It was important for us to pick up and focus on this topical issue. The potential of 3D printing in many vertical markets shouldn’t be underestimated. In particular, spare parts for mechanical engineering or pack-aging

14

October 2015

design offer huge opportunities for machine builders, users and also print providers,” continues Sabine Geldermann. The 3D fab+print touchpoint in Hall 7A reflects this diversity. This special show will pre-sent the very latest state-of-the-art technology as well as vision and exciting best-practice cases. Technology providers and customers, exhibitors and visitors, visionaries and real-life users can meet here and drive this exciting topic forward. KCI Publishing BV has been tasked with organising the 3D fab+print touchpoint. The Additive Manufacturing in the VDMA workgroup, a VDMA initiative, will also contribute to drupa 2016 with a series of presentations in the 3d fab+print touchpoint along with its own activities. “3D printing is very appealing and exciting for the consumer market. It allows for complete customisation and is the key to highly flexible production, making 3D printing very attractive for promotional items and personalised products. 3D printing is also ideal for producing small batches of tools, for finishing, for example,” explains Rainer Gebhardt, project manager of the Additive Manufacturing workgroup. And last but not least, 3D printing is also featured in the drupa innovation park – in the

“Innovations in Printing Technologies” area. KCI Publishing is one of the leading knowledge, communication and information companies based in the Netherlands connecting business-to-business professionals by building and sustaining global communities, solving their information needs and helping them to develop their professional lives and friendships.

Malayala Manorama chooses Q.I. Press Controls for a fifth time The leading newspaper group chooses mRC-3D register system for its Manugraph Smartline press in Kollam. Q.I. Press Controls has received yet another order from Malayala Manorama. The organisation, which has the most widely sold and circulating newspaper in India, has purchased the mRC-3D for its plant in Kollam, India. Q.I. Press Controls has been working with the newspaper for many years already. Results at its other sites have proved so good that Malayala Manorama had no hesitation in ordering Q.I. Press Controls’ register system for its Manugraph Smartline press in Kollam.

18 mRC-3D cameras are being installed for colour register and cut-off on a Manugraph Smartline double-width printing press with 4 towers and 1 folder.

Malayala Manorama owns around 25 leading daily and weekly newspapers in India, publishing in both English and Malayalam. The organisation operates from nineteen plants spread across India. Since 2011, Malayala Manorama Daily can count itself amongst the most widely circulating newspapers in the world. Menno Jansen, managing director of Q.I. Press Controls, is honoured that an organisation as successful as Malayala Manorama should be satisfied with automation solutions provided by Q.I. Press Controls and takes a great deal of pride in the new order. “Receiving the order for the mRC-3D cameras demonstrates that Q.I. Press Controls fit in with the leading players on the world stage, so we are justly proud,” explains Jansen. Collaboration between Q.I. Press Controls and Malayala Manorama started in 2011. Manugraph’s first Smartline double-width printing press in India was sold to Malayala Manorama, so the organisation

went in search of a supplier of automation solutions able to provide the best possible support in this area. References on the India market pointed to the reliability offered by Q.I. Press Controls, as a result of which Malayala Manorama opted for 48 of Q.I. Press Controls’ mRC+ cameras. In doing so, the Indian organisation affirmed its faith in Q.I. Press Controls’ assurance to enable top-quality printing with the lowest possible levels of waste. The 2011 order and the subsequent upturn in returns led to a string of new orders for Q.I. Press Controls. The mRC+ is now being installed at four other sites. Malayala Manorama explains that the systems have proved their worth several times over. They say that Q.I. Press Controls’ automated solutions work effectively on the Malayala Manorama printing presses. Not only have they brought about less wastage, fewer operators are needed and it takes significantly less time to print an edition. Most importantly however, these systems enable them to print in high quality. The new order for the plant in Kollam consists of the new mRC-3D, the successor to the mRC+. 18 mRC3D cameras are being installed for colour register and cut-off on a Manugraph Smartline double-width printing press with 4 towers and 1 folder. Malayala Manorama adds that, in the wake of results from previous orders, they have every confidence in installing the new system on its press in Kollam.

Key Notes : > Kollam plant of Malayala Manorama installs its fifth mRC3D. > The mRC+ is now being installed at four other sites. > Q.I. Press Controls’ automated solutions – less wastage, less number of operators and faster & high quality printing.

World Publishing Expo draws thousands of visitors from 79 countries More than 7,000 visitors from 79 countries attended the World Publishing Expo in Hamburg, Germany, the largest global trade fair for the newspaper and news publishing industry, which closed on Wednesday following three days of conferences, workshops, presentations and networking among global industry leaders. The 45th exhibition, organized annually by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), included more than 200 exhibitors from 22 countries, including printing press manufacturers, editorial and advertising system providers, new media providers and other suppliers to the industry. The 2015 Expo attendance was slightly higher than last year’s event in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. “I am delighted to have received numerous positive comments from participants and exhibitors who enjoyed the quality of the content and experiences shared during our conferences and open stage sessions. This adds value to the visitors’ experience and brings the Expo into a new dimension,” said Vincent Peyrègne, CEO of WAN-IFRA. “The World Publishing Expo is the place where exhibitors and publishers talk about the business impact of technologies, and how they can boost their revenue model,” he said. “Publishers move beyond their comfort zone and approach their investments with a strategic mindset rather than with a purely operational one.” The World Publishing Expo brings together suppliers to the industry with its thought

leaders and decision makers. In addition to the exhibition, which showcased the latest technologies, the event featured more than 120 speakers sharing their success stories, two Media Port stages focusing on print and digital publishing, and three premium conferences on newsroom issues, mobile publishing, and the future of printing news products. Next year’s World Publishing Expo will be held in Vienna, Austria, from 10 to 12 October 2016, at the Messe Wien. “Overall we had a very good flow of visitors and contacts, and I think it was a good platform to meet our customers for discussions. The World Publishing Expo is the platform for the newspaper industry in Europe,” comments Richard Elmer, Director of Communications, Ferag. “I think we are seeing a general trend in the market of less investment, consolidation, less printing, in terms of attendance at the event. Our visits were good with our clients, the quality good. One positive development that we are hearing, particularly out of the U.K. and even in the USA, is that circulation and sales seems to be levelling out on print and, more importantly, publishers are starting to realise that print advertising can indeed be effective so they are considering balancing

print and digital a bit more, as opposed to purely focussing so much energy on digital,” says Klaus Schmidt, Director of Marketing, KBA. “It’s a valuable event for our customers for sure. The guys that come are rather positive and have new prospects for business. There is a lot of interest from the direct distribution model,” says Georg Riva, Marketing Manager, Müller Martini. Norbert Ohl, CEO, ppi Media comments, “It has been a really good show, as our stand has been really full with meetings and presentations. There is a real interest in publishers for a true media-neutral publishing solution and workflow. Even some of our most conservative customers are now thinking this way and working in that direction. On the sales and advertising side, publishers are increasingly looking for ways to ‘mobilise’ their sales staffs out in the field, to equip them with the right tools to best sell their inventory.”

New-ProImages reaches 100% market share in Thailand with Thairath Daily installation New-ProImage Asia has installed its NewsWay Production Workflow at the largest newspaper in Thailand, Thairath Daily in Bangkok. The newspaper replaced its previous system with New-ProImage NewsWay to standardize and streamline their production workflow. Their request for a powerful, simple to operate, affordable system with low maintenance could be met by NewProImage. Major decision factors for Thairath were that NewsWay allowed them to remain their structure, hardware and software as well as required only minimal changes to their whole production system setup. New-ProImage NewsWay controls and manages production workflow from a variety of front-end systems through to output. It provides automation and control for the entire production of magazines, commercial jobs and of course newspapers. The system at Thairath extends the solution from colour management control, workflow solutions, drivers of CtP and through to complete press and plate management. One of Thairath’s main objectives was to

eliminate manual operations of pairing page elements and ensure complete tracking and position of all pages in production. In addition, reduction in time from editorial to press ready plates and integration of current RIP and CtP systems into the production were also a large requirement all of which NewsWay is now providing to Thairath. Thairath’s Pre-Press Manager Khun Thanin Teranasarn is pleased with the “very short and efficient” installation and the flexibility of the New-ProImage workflow system. He also praises the efficiency and user friendliness of the system. Another big aspect is the fact that New-ProImage offers excellent aftersales support and the maintenance of the system is much less time consuming than the previous system.

With this installation, New-ProImage is closing 100% market share for production workflow in Thailand. New-ProImage is a developer of browserbased Workflow Management, Ink Optimization, Press Registration Solution, Tablet and Mobile solutions, Colour Image Processing and Production Tracking solutions for the commercial and newspaper printing and publishing industries. New-ProImage solutions enable publishers, which have been dramatically affected by the rapid growth of digital publishing to remain competitive in today’s economic climate.

ppi: Between live demonstrations and closing contracts There was a lot to do for ppi Media at the World Publishing Expo 2015 in Hamburg Bucking the trend: Despite a lower number of visitors and fewer walk-ins, the World Publishing Expo 2015 will go down as a resounding success for ppi Media: “Our booth was full from start to finish. In those three days, we held roughly 120 conversations with current and potential future customers, conducted demonstrations and answered questions in lively discussions. There was no time to catch our breath. Nonetheless, we did notice that the hall in general was not quite as full as it had been in previous years. For us, however, the World Publishing Expo remains the most important and profitable event of the year just after ppi’s Open Days,” says Norbert Ohl, Managing Director at ppi Media, putting it all in a nutshell.

New customers and projects ppi Media announced that it had signed a total of three contracts during the World Publishing Expo: RP Online decided in favor of AdX Digital, the Toronto Star signed on as a new customer for ppi Media’s classic PlanPag and AdPag solutions and the donedeal with Madsack’s Managing Director, Christoph Rüth. He selected ppi Media’s AdX Print with Gutenberg Rechenzentrum’s deeply integrated ad system VI&VA. “Beyond that, we are also very excited that the Reiff Verlag in Offenburg decided in favor of our

InkReduction solution to optimize their ink usage,” reveals Norbert Ohl.

Paying a visit to impulse’s editorial offices In addition to the new customer projects, ppi Media’s Managing Director illustrates another highlight from the Expo: The tour of impulse, the magazine for entrepreneurs. Roughly 20 participants made their way to impulse Medien’s editorial offices on the third day of the event. Publishing Director Ole Jendis and Managing Director Eva Weikert opened their doors and provided exclusive insight into the magazine’s philosophy, strategy and

its plans for the future. In addition to that, the visitors experienced Content-X live. impulse has been using this editorial solution since 2013. At that time, Impulse Medien GmbH separated from its parent company, Gruner + Jahr, and since then impulse has been using ppi Media and Digital Collections’ Content-X to produce its monthly publication as well as its special editions and inserts.

Focusing on the Scandinavian Market Joakim Hvistendahl was present at ppi Media’s booth for the first time. The Norwegian is a ppi Media sales representative, key account manager and responsible for sales in Scandinavia. Joakim Hvistendahl is an independent consultant from JHV Media Consult who is quite familiar with the Scandinavian media sector. For eleven years he worked at a regional daily newspaper in Norway where he worked his way up to management. Later he switched to a Danish software supplier where he worked for another 14 years. His 25 years of experience in Scandinavian media make him a very valuable partner for ppi Media. Upon conclusion of this year’s exhilarating expo in Hamburg, ppi Media is looking forward to the next one, which will be held in Austria. The software expert will again participate in the World Publishing Expo next year when it convenes in Vienna from October 10 to 12, 2016.

3rd Generation High-Chroma by Konica Minolta Konica Minolta Business Solutions India has introduced at Rajasthan Photo Fair 2015 the bizhub PRESS C71hc. The machine provides enhanced printing services based on the advanced colour reproduction capabilities of proprietary high-chroma toner. Truly amazing quality results can be achieved for photo books and photo merchandise, promotional materials, and other sophisticated print products. “The colour production printing market is steadily growing and there can be no doubt that RGB data and the high-chroma technology will continue to increase in importance in the future. In this context, Konica Minolta is proud to introduce the 3rd generation of high-chroma products with the new bizhub PRESS C71hc,” – explains Mr Yuji Nakata, Managing Director Konica Minolta India. With the growing need to print product images or photo albums from digital cameras, but also with the demand to combining online with printed communication, the requirement for the accurate reproduction of RGB workflows is

rapidly increasing. But due to the narrower colour range of a conventional CMYK printer, some of the colours seen in real life or on a monitor may change in print or appear less vivid. Konica Minolta now presents the professional solution with the bizhub PRESS C71hc. The high-chroma toner of these colour production systems has an extended colour range that is much closer to sRGB than that of conventional CMYK toners. Colours can be printed virtually as they are displayed for example on a calibrated monitor. The machine is more reliable in colour reproduction with advance technologies, better colour management and has a higher productivity than its predecessor. The new machine has a higher life of its consumable parts and can now handle heavier media. “Today’s communication channels cover print, online and mobile communication, so that professionals are changing their colour management from traditional CMYK to sRGB. With our new generation of Konica Minolta’s production printing systems, we enable colour users to get the best out of

photos and print them in a fantastic quality. The bizhub PRESSC71hc will easily print colours that until now have proven difficult to reproduce, such as vivid pinks and purples, and different shades of green and the RGB photographs,” says Mr. Yuji Nakata. Another asset of the bizhub PRESS C71hc is their wide range of finishing capabilities and its combination with a workflow software Print Xpress. Features like booklet production, perfect binding, and auto ring binding and of course the extensive stacking capacity of up to 10,000 sheets allows one-step printing and finishing without manual intervention.

New HP LaserJets with built-in self-healing security features with protection down to the BIOS HP has announced three new enterprise class LaserJet printers that deliver increased protection against malicious attacks. “Protecting against security breaches is one of the biggest challenges our customers face,” said Tuan Tran, vice president and general manager, LaserJet and Enterprise Solutions business, HP. “HP is helping customers secure their devices, documents and data by defending our enterprise printers with the strongest protection in the industry.”

Deepest protection in the industry Printer security is a topic of growing importance. According to the Ponemon Institute, 64 percent of IT managers believe their printers are likely infected with malware. At the same time, 56 percent of enterprise companies ignore printers in their endpoint security strategy. To help address this gap, HP is delivering its new HP LaserJet Enterprise printers and multi-function printers (MFPs) with industry-leading security features built in, including: • HP Sure Start enables detection of and self-healing recovery from malicious BIOS attacks, extending the same BIOS security protecting HP’s Elite line of PCs since 2013 to the new HP LaserJet Enterprise printers. • Whitelisting ensures only known, good firmware can be loaded and executed on a printer. • Run-time Intrusion Detection is a new feature providing in-device memory monitoring for malicious attacks. It was developed in partnership with Red Balloon Security, an embedded device security company started by researchers from Columbia University. The company has done extensive research for several government

agencies, as well as private sector companies in industries such as telecommunications and controller systems. These new features will be standard on new HP LaserJet Enterprise printers and OfficeJet Enterprise X printers with HP PageWide Technology going forward, although a firmware update may be required on units to activate the features. With a firmware update, these three features can also be enabled on several HP LaserJet Enterprise printers available since April. In addition, Whitelisting and Run-time Intrusion Detection can be added to many existing HP LaserJet Enterprise printers and OfficeJet Enterprise X printers launched since 2011 through an HP FutureSmart service pack update. FutureSmart is HP firmware that helps protect customers’ investments in HP Enterprise printers by enabling delivery of new capabilities via updates. Beyond the printer itself, HP also helps customers protect their print environment with solutions to manage security. HP JetAdvantage Security Manager, the industry’s only policy-based printer security compliance solution, lets IT establish and maintain security settings such as closing ports, disabling access protocols, auto-erasing files and more. When a reboot occurs, the HP Instant-On Security feature checks and resets any impacted settings automatically to bring devices into compliance with the organization’s policy. Earlier this fall, HP JetAdvantage Security Manager was updated for greater automation, including auto-discovery of devices to make it easier to find and add printers to manage.

New printers feature fast, efficient printing The new HP LaserJet Enterprise printers and MFPs deliver the fastest real world print performance in their class with the fastest first page out and dual-sided print speeds as well as the lowest total energy consumption per page. These printers were built for ease of use and include support for printing from mobile devices. Designed for workgroups of 5-15 users printing up to 7,500 pages

per month, the printers benefit from the increased performance, protection and print capacity of new HP Original Toner cartridges with JetIntelligence. The new models include: • The HP LaserJet Enterprise M506 series for monochrome printing with a 25 percent smaller footprint and dual-sided print speeds up to 71 percent faster than its predecessor. • The HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M527 series, which offers monochrome printing in an MFP that includes single pass, two-sided scanning, an eightinch color touchscreen control panel to support advanced workflow, and first page out speeds up to 33 percent faster than its predecessor. • The HP Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M577 series, delivers outstanding colour printing in an MFP that includes single pass, two-sided scanning, an eight-inch colour touchscreen control panel and optional keyboard to support advanced workflow, as well as dualsided print speeds up to 43 percent faster than its predecessor. The HP LaserJet Enterprise M506 series is generally available on October 1 and the HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M527 and HP Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M577 series printers will be generally available on November 2.

iFLEX label press by OMET nominated at FlexoTech Awards 2015 for Innovation iFlex label press by OMET has been nominated for the Innovation Award at the FlexoTech Awards 2015. The Award Ceremony will take place on October 22nd, at the Hilton London Metropole, UK. The iFlex, officially launched last May at OMET’s headquarters, is a 370mm-wide ‘entry-level’ PS label press full of handy, yet effective innovations helping the printer reaching the best result within the shortest time and with the least amount of waste. To this end, the press introduces, for the first time in flexo, the laser-assisted plate cylinder adjustment iLight and iVision register control. iLight is an uncommon pre-register system characterized by the presence of one laser pointer per print unit. The laser pointers guide the operator to the quick manual alignment of all plates, thus speeding up the job changeovers and reducing waste. Dual laser pointers are positioned on the die station - one perpendicular to the die for accurate longitudinal register, and one aligned on the web for cut-to-print accuracy.

iVision is a camera-assisted register system (one camera per print unit). The scanned images reach the iVision display and the register is quickly manually set before the printed job reaches the end of the line.

and improve print stability. Last but not least, iFlex has a fully re-designed converting section introducing QCDC (Quick Change Die-Cutting) and Rock’n’Roll matrix rewinder unit.

iFlex is equipped with Direct Drive technology which means one gear on the plate cylinder per print unit! This solution is meant to eliminate gear backlash, reduce maintenance

iFlex is the press that especially suits varied needs of label converters to produce all types of PS labels with low waste and great efficiency.

Customers look for cost-effective and efficient production

In just six months, over ten machines have been shipped to customers, primarily in Europe, reflecting the partnership’s success. The aim is to continuously increase the volume of business by progressively expanding the product portfolio.

More than ten Promatrix 106 CS and Easymatrix 106 CS die cutters have already been sold. Both die cutters offer an excellent price-performance ratio and are aimed at customers with small and medium production volumes. These machines are also highly attractive to customers in the commercial sector. The Promatrix 106 CS has a speed of 8,000 sheets per hour, while the Easymatrix 106 CS runs at 7,700 sheets per hour.

“By using MK products, we can meet the specific demands of our customers on the packaging market. They need the best machines for their individual requirements so as to ensure efficient and costeffective folding carton production,” explains Harald Weimer, member of the Heidelberg Management Board responsible for global sales. “We offer customers what they need, whether from Heidelberg or a partner. In MK, we’ve found a partner that has impressed us with the quality of its production and innovative research and development. It

The first purchaser of the Promatrix 106 CS was Polish print shop Arka-Druk (link to press release dated April 16, 2015). It has a workforce of 80 employees, who supply customers throughout the country with commercial jobs but also increasingly offer them packaging for foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals. “The Promatrix has proven its worth in our production operations. Continuous portfolio expansion The partnership between MK and Heidelberg aims to satisfy the growing demand for innovative machines for postpress in the packaging sector. The right products and technologies, comprehensive service, and a rapid supply of spare parts are key. As well as the Promatrix and Easymatrix, the future will also see MK machines that feature special modules such as offline inspection, hot foil embossing, and blanking. Some of these new machines will

be introduced to a wider audience at the upcoming Packaging Days at the WieslochWalldorf site in November. The MK Diana X, MK Diana Smart 55, and MK Diana Smart 80 foldergluers will also be on show. The new label press system is based on Fujifilm’s state-of-the-art inkjet technology and is the result of a joint development between Heidelberg, the Heidelberg subsidiary Gallus, and Fujifilm. It is already setting a new benchmark in the industrial label printing market in terms of combining print quality, flexibility, and productivity. Gallus and Heidelberg unveiled the press to the public around a year ago and are now launching it on the market following successful field trials. “Since our announcement in 2013 on rapidly expanding digital business in collaboration with successful partners and offering new business models and applications to users in the packaging and commercial printing sectors, we’ve come along in leaps and bounds and introduced the first products. The interest and positive response from our customers show we’re on the right track,” says Jason Oliver, head of Digital at Heidelberg. “In launching a digital web press, we have reached a key milestone. At next year’s drupa we’ll also be showcasing digital print

innovations for sheetfed printing and thus rapidly expanding our digital portfolio.”

Better market coverage and greater efficiency in sales and service Heidelberg acquired the Gallus Group, the Swiss manufacturer of web presses for the label and folding carton market, around a year ago. As part of the takeover and collaboration between the two companies in developing new products, Heidelberg and Gallus are now also increasing market coverage and efficiency in sales and service, with Heidelberg gradually integrating the Gallus sales and service organizations into its existing sales network. Asia and Australia are kicking off the process, followed by selected countries in Europe. Gallus customers will then also have access to the entire service and product portfolios of both companies from a single source. Gallus customers will retain their existing contacts and will continue to benefit from the specialist industry expertise they have come to expect and the comprehensive know-how of Heidelberg and the largest service network in the print media industry. “The growing digitization in the print media industry is increasing customer requirements for efficiency in all manufacturer and supplier sectors. The integration of the Gallus sales and service functions, with their focus on the label market, into the Heidelberg network is thus a powerful response to the changes in our industry and a key signal of a partnership with our customers,” says Stephan Plenz, member of the Heidelberg Management Board responsible for Heidelberg Equipment.

FINAT’s Kurt Walker receives lifetime recognition FINAT, trade association for the self-adhesive labelling and adjacent narrow web converting industry, has announced that Past President Kurt Walker has been recognised with the R. Stanton Avery Lifetime Achievement Award at 2015 Label Industry Global Awards. Sponsored by Avery Dennison, the R. Stanton Avery Lifetime Achievement Award, is presented to those that have made a substantial and key contribution to the label industry over a minimum of 25 years. “Kurt Walker was the unanimous choice of the judging panel. His impressive long-term industry pedigree as CEO of tesaBandfix, as well as terms as Treasurer, Vice-President and President of FINAT, made him the stand-out choice for this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award,” commented chair of the judges, Mike Fairley. Known for being innovative and forward thinking, Walker has been influential in unifying the wider global label industry. A significant supporter of the L7 – now L9 – Walker has also been instrumental in helping grow the alliance’s profile and importance. “Kurt has played an important role at FINAT, and has been a driving force in engaging the label community worldwide and connecting people. He laid the foundations for the association’s repositioning as the leading network and resource for business leaders in the European label community. He also was a strong advocate of FINAT’s role in

When asked about what have been his most rewarding achievements with FINAT, Walker says: “Linking the international label industry and defining the new position of FINAT in Europe were for me the biggest challenges. The transformation of the annual FINAT congress from a social business event to ‘The European Label Forum’ (ELF) will certainly help to strengthen FINAT’s position as the umbrella organisation for the European Label industry. I’m enchanted to have been involved in that process.”

Leading FINAT in the age of transformation

stimulating environmentally sustainable practice in the label industry, especially where it concerns the adoption of recycling solutions,” adds Jules Lejeune, Managing Director of FINAT. “We are delighted his efforts, knowledge and experience in the label industry have been recognized and awarded. It is truly well deserved!”

Prominent role in unifying the label industry After achieving a university degree in chemistry and business administration, Walker entered the printing industry where he has held various positions in sales and marketing. In 1988 he joined the label industry and acted until his retirement in 2012 as CEO of tesaBandfix AG, the Switzerlandbased business which manufactures self-adhesive decorative and design labels. Under Kurt’s successful management, tesaBandfix (later Bandfix) became one of the most prominent and innovative label companies in Europe. Kurt’s FINAT ‘career’ dates back to 1989, when he attended his first FINAT meeting. In 2007, he joined the FINAT Board, and a year later became the association’s Treasurer. In 2009 he was elected Vice- President, before being appointed President in 2011. “I was always interested in what happens outside my own business world, so being part of an association seemed a natural and easy way for me to make contacts with my industry peers and to access relevant market information,” comments Walker.

Kurt stepped down from his Presidency of FINAT at this year’s ELF after leading the association for four years, making him one of the longest serving of all FINAT Presidents. Taking over the Presidency is Thomas Hagmaier. Thomas is the second generation in charge of the almost 70-year old family company HagmaierEtiketten. Having successfully led the company for years with his brother Werner, Thomas became the sole owner in 2012. Thomas joined the FINAT Board in 2006, after having been a member of the Marketing Committee since 2004. In 2009, he joined the FINAT Membership Committee before being elected the association’s Vice-President in 2011. “For the optimal ‘out of the box’ view of the label business, I soon found that FINAT was the right route to take, and I subsequently decided that active work in the committees would be the best way to gain a deeper knowledge of the industry and expand connections in many sectors,” comments Hagmaier. Leading FINAT over the next years, Hagmaier has set clear goals for his Presidency in order to help the label community answer current and future industry challenges: “Label, packaging and product decoration are our love. FINAT must remain the European platform to support this vibrant product base with a platform of meetings, education, trend watching and statistics. My vision is to wake up and motivate a lot more converters to join our forum, so that many more companies volunteer for the FINAT committees, explore with others the future of our products and help to shape our industry.”

Esko announces update of ArtiosCAD ArtiosCAD helps designers create and produce multi-part displays or packages faster by eliminating wasteful steps

Esko has announced that it is rolling out its newest release of ArtiosCAD, an important release of one of its leading structural design editors for packaging and displays. The updated version showcases Canvas Design which, thanks to a series of new features, significantly improves the workflow for anyone designing and producing multicomponent displays and packaging. The enhancements are the result of substantial customer input, eliminate the pain points customers were facing related to designing and producing multipart designs. “Displays are becoming ever more complex, with more and more pieces and parts. Designers like to create all parts on a single ‘document’ so they can see how each piece will interact and fit with each other. Imagine if you have a fifty-piece display built with severaldifferent substrates or materials. Designing them individually presents a true challenge trying to keep track of all the pieces,”explains Richard Deroo, Esko Product Manager, Structural Design.”These enhancements make multipart designingeasier than ever before.”

Master Design template The new Canvas File in ArtiosCAD is a master design template. A designer can create all the pieces on a single canvas and see how they interact. From that one canvas, they can now redirect those components that need graphics, separate the components based upon how they are manufactured and identify each part for reports, database searching or forintegrating with a business system.ArtiosCAD maintains a unique board assignment for each part. Parts

38

October 2015

made on mixed substrates can be designed and viewed together. Unique database information is stored for each part, making themeasy to identify. When parts are output, they can be done so, separately. Moreover, if a separate part file is edited, ArtiosCAD notes the change and allows it to be updated on the master Canvas File.

Significant improvement for POP, display and multi-part package design There are many areas where ArtiosCAD streamlines a workflow. For example, it makes it easy to tie into an MIS, allowing the business system to create unique parts for inventory and costing; or helping to run a bill

of materials. If a display is created, only those parts that require artwork can be sent to the graphic design department – not the entire display, eliminating any possible confusion. For manufacturing, companies are now able to separate the canvas into different parts and deliveronly those pieces that require a specific manufacturing technique – for example, to a die maker or to a Kongsberg table. It’s even possible to add non-design elements such as a pallet for transport or assembly hardware to the workflow, which are then referred to as non-production parts. “With this latest upgrade to ArtiosCAD, Esko has introduced significant improvements for designers of POP and displays, and multipart packaging – improving the workflow and allowing them to work more efficiently. This release allows them to work the way they want to work on a single design canvas, while identifying separate parts,” concludes Deroo. All these new enhancements are available in ArtiosCAD 14.1.1. From October 15, the upgrade will be free of charge for ArtiosCAD customers worldwide with maintenance contracts.

Lombardi displays latest technology at Labelexpo, books seven orders Lombardi Converting Machinery at Labelexpo Europe 2015 showcased its high level technology with two different applications for the narrow web flexographic printing press Synchroline. Full expression of Omet’s label and packaging potential at Labelexpo Nine demos a day stirred up OMET’s stand and gathered crowds of visitors to watch live 3 presses tailored to the needs of today’s label converters and fully covering the requests of a variegated and dynamic market such as the one of labels and packaging printing. The big news was, of course, the first ever show demos on iFlex 370mm (14’’) label press. everyone appreciated the simplicity of operation and the high quality results obtained with no effort at all and with just one gear per flexo unit at iFlex. Pre-register, register, job change were performed with the greatest attention to the reduction of wastage of material and time. Novelties like iLight, laser-assisted pre-register system, QCDC, Quick Change Die cutting by means of a trolley for the slide in/out of the heavy diecutting cylinders, iVision, camera-assisted system for the immediate set-up of the perfect register showed how simplicity can be the key to success. Next to iFlex, the XFlex X6 Offset, flexo + offset with sleeves hybrid press captured the attention of the audience. The XFlex X6 Offset is the most complete and only press mixing flexo and rotary offset in 530mm (21’’) width whose multi-technology and multiapplication approach can handle medium to large volumes of filmic labels, shrink sleeves, IML labels, flexible packaging and carton boxes with the certainty of the least quantity of waste and the highest quality output in one, single passage. To complete such a valuable picture, OMET presented the XFlex X6 Digital with flexo + digital JetPlus combination to satisfy needs of short runs printing and heavy job rotation, and delivering the most elevated quality and highest productivity. The XFlex X6 Digital, firstly presented in Drupa 2012, is a fully operational machine already installed in the market with great satisfaction of the printers. Thanks to the perfect integration of the flexo and digital workflows, and adding in line further finishing and converting technologies, like screen printing, UV lamination or cold foil, the converters that choose to rely on XFlex X6 Digital can profit, as necessary, of a flexo press, of a hybrid flexo + digital combination machine, when the need is to print sampling or variable data with short delivery times,

or of the digital 4-colour unit JetPlus (expandable) to print 100 percent digital. Many orders were signed during the Show and more orders are expected by Omet to come in the next few weeks. Marco Calcagni, sales and marketing director of OMET, comments: “The visitors to our stand, all of the highest level and well informed on the technology available on the

Kunshan Fuhua to meet ambitious objectives with Flint nyloflex NExT Kunshan Fuhua is a leading Chinese flexo trade shop with a comprehensive offering for packaging printers. With an aim to be among the top flexo plate making companies in Asia, they chose to step and grow into the thin plate area besides the segment of thick plates. After a successful series of tests, they decided in April 2015, to install a nyloflex NExT Exposure FV unit from Flint Group. The nyloflex NExT exposure technology utilises a high intensity UV-A LED light source to conduct rapid crosslinking of the photopolymer surface. The high UV-A output results in a virtual 1:1 image reproduction from the digital file to the finished plate. In flexible packaging, printing plates exposed with this technology allow excellent ink transfer, particularly in solids due

40

Kodak showcases high-performance Offset Printing Plate at Labelexpo Europe 2015

Kodak is maximizing plate performance and improving the sustainability of its customers’ operations with the announcement of the KODAK ELECTRA MAX Thermal Plate. The new offset printing plate is being showcased at Labelexpo Europe 2015 at the Kodak booth.

Kodak’s new ELECTRA MAX Plate offers maximum capabilities and stability for printers, such as long unbaked run lengths, strong chemical resistance, and 10-micron FM and 450 lpi (180 lines/cm) AM resolution capabilities. The versatile thermal plate is suitable for use in a diverse range of printing environments. It is ideal for printers using UV curable inks and particularly well suited for offset packaging printing as well as web publication and commercial sheetfed printing. Preliminary tests have confirmed that the new plate achieves an unbaked run length of 500,000 impressions in web offset applications, 350,000 in sheetfed applications, and 150,000 in UV applications (these specifications are subject to change).

Dubbed the “No Compromise” plate, the ELECTRA MAX Plate delivers low developer consumption and long run lengths with no preheat requirements, making it ideal for offset printers looking to boost performance in platemaking and on press while increasing their sustainability. “Printers in virtually any segment of the offset market can now benefit from a versatile plate – the new ELECTRA MAX – that fulfills the highest possible performance and quality requirements and lessens their environmental impact during the platemaking process,” said Brad W. Kruchten, President, Print Systems Division and Senior Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company.

High-quality labels with a strong feel The PrintCity Alliance is presenting labels with strong haptic and visual effects, almost identical to those of the associated folding carton previously produced. Self-adhesive paper labels for the green El Drago outer packaging for luxury drinks were produced in a first step. They complement the Real Life Samples project and are being shown for the first time at FachPack and LabelExpo.

Cost-efficient production on a Gallus ECS 340

Consistent look and feel for labels and folding carton

This permits very cost-efficient production without additional investments. The slightly higher costs for finishing pay off for the customer through higher sales and increased customer loyalty.

Although the substrates and the production units are so different, the visual and haptic effects of the folding carton are imitated almost identically on the labels.

“For us, it’s particularly important to show that effects of this kind are possible using a standard machine configuration,” says Matthias Marx, Manager Corporate Communications at Gallus. “The key to doing so is to ideally combine the finishings with coatings, pigments and cold foil.”

Strong haptic and visual effects This consistent look and feel, with the high degree of finishing and strong haptic effects, increases the value of the products. This enables brand owners to achieve higher profit margins, makes for a strong product presence in the customer’s mind and increases the incentive to buy a second time.

The effects on the two-colour label were created by the interplay of three coatings, cold film and an effect pigment. For example, the leather-like structure of the folding carton was achieved through a skilful combination of printed image, a soft matt coating with haptic effect applied over the full surface, and a relief lacquer applied to a partial area by screen printing. The optical depth of this structure effect was further intensified by partial application of a colour-change effect pigment under the matt coating. As with all PrintCity Alliance projects, the experience gained and the special features of this production project are summarised in a detailed Tutorial.

NVC international working group drives university research in Web Retail Packaging The blistering speed at which developments in packaging for e-commerce and home delivery occur may result in an underdeveloped fundamental knowledge on the matter itself, thus potentially negatively influencing the sustained growth of this sector. To combat this potential threat, universities must be invigorated, on a global scale, to research the matter of Web Retail Packaging (WRP); including new materials, packaging techniques and the end-use of packaging by consumers. This is the conclusion of the NVC’s annual international working group meeting, that took place in Rotterdam on the 25th of September, 2015. The working group also supported the development of a course for business professionals. This NVC E-Course Packaging for E-commerce with four online sessions gives an excellent insight into the importance of packaging for successful e-commerce business. The next group starts on November 9th, 2015. The working group is part of the NVC’s innovation project Web Retail Packaging. The NVC Working Group Web Retail Packaging consists of major international e-tailers, manufacturers and packaging (services) suppliers. Supported by the NVC

association office in Gouda, the Netherlands, this international group provides guidance and intelligence to the global e-commerce community. Since its creation in 2013, the NVC’s innovation project has focussed on raising awareness on the topic of Web Retail Packaging and diffusing information and knowledge on a global scale. This was done through the NVC’s participation in global conferences as well as publishing an NVC Position Paper: ‘Packaging as driver for the

sustained future of e-commerce’. It is this sustained future for which research must be intensified. NVC (founded in 1953) is the association of companies addressing the activity of packaging throughout the supply chain of packaged products. The NVC membership, projects, information services and education programme stimulate the continuous improvement of packaging.

HP has introduced a new portfolio of HP PageWide XL Printers with the launch of HP PageWide XL 8000 Printer in India, offering the fastest large-format production printing available in colour and black-andwhite. HP PageWide XL Printers do the job of two printers in one single device, providing monochrome and colour prints at breakthrough speeds up to 60 percent faster than the fastest monochrome light-emitting diode (LED) printer. Included as part of the new portfolio, the HP PageWide XL Blueprinters are also designed to deliver more pages of translucent prints, blackand-white whiteprints and digital blueprints with superior quality.

“The HP PageWide XL Printers will revolutionize the production printing market, offering affordable, high-quality black-and-white and colour output in a single device at the fastest speeds available.” Devang Karia, HP India

The new printers will enable reprographic houses, print service providers (PSPs), enterprise central reprographic departments (CRDs) and print corners to produce computer-aided design (CAD) drawings and will open new business opportunities with geographic information system (GIS) maps, point-ofsale applications and posters. “Our large-format printing customers are continually exploring ways to improve productivity, streamline workflow and reduce costs,” said Devang Karia,

Country Manager, Large Format Design,PPS, HP India.“The HP PageWide XL Printers announced today deliver what our customers have been seeking for years and will revolutionize the production printing market, offering affordable, high-quality black-andwhite and color output in a single device at the fastest speeds available.” HP PageWide XL Printers are the first products introduced under the new HP PageWide sub-brand. Based on proven HP PageWide Technology, which currently powers HP Inkjet Web Presses, HP business printers and will be scaled for upcoming HP 3D Multi Jet FusionTM printers, the new portfolio delivers on the announcement made last year, providing low operation costs driven by life-long printheads, high ink efficiency and cloud-based support. The HP PageWide XL Printer portfolio includes: •

The HP PageWide XL 8000 Printer offering highend production printing at revolutionary speeds up to 30 D/A1-size prints per minute as well as two 775 milliliter ink cartridges per colour with automatic switching and up to six rolls – more than 3,900 feet (1,200 meters) – of media for sustained productivity.

The HP PageWide XL 8000 and 5000 Blueprinters delivering medium-to-large reprographic houses and enterprise CRDs robust mid-to high-volume production of technical documents, including translucent prints, black-andwhite whiteprints and digital blueprints, at up to 800 and 320 A0 pages per hour respectively.

The HP PageWide XL 5000 Printer and Multi-function Printer (MFP) providing small- to medium-sized reprographic houses and enterprise CRDs mid-volume technical document production at up to 14 D/A1-size prints per minute as well as two 400 milliliter ink cartridges per color with automatic switching and up to four rolls of media to streamline work. The HP PageWide XL 4000 Printer and MFP allowing technical work teams and copy shops to produce 8 D/A1size prints per minute, helping teams increase on-the-job productivity. A speed upgrade option is also available which can produce up to 12D/A1-size prints per minute.

“Changing customer demands have caused us to look for opportunities to address the print needs of new markets, including advertising and communication, in addition to servicing our core customer base of architecture, engineering and construction firms,” said Chuck Wingard, president and owner, Tree Towns Imaging & Color Graphics. “The HP PageWide XL 8000 Printer will

enable us to streamline our workflow with one printer for a variety of high-quality black-andwhite and color jobs at high speeds and will fill the gap between our existing technology to better service our diverse customer base.”

Streamlining large-format printing workflow increases productivity

The production printing market has traditionally been led by monochrome-only LED printers, requiring customers to also operate large-format inkjet colour printers to address colour jobs. The new printers consolidate workflow to deliver mixed blackand-white and colour prints in half the time it would take to manually collate documents produced on multiple printers. In addition, a full portfolio of scanning and finishing solutions, including the HP Designjet HD and SD Pro Scanners and new HP PageWide XL Printer accessories, such as the HP PageWide XL online folder, top stacker and high-capacity stacker, enable customers to build efficient end-to end workflows around HP PageWide XL Printers and free up the operator.

New large-format supplies HP PageWide XL Pigment Inks increase print quality with crisp lines, fine detail and smooth grayscales that are superior to LED prints. HP PageWide XL Pigment Inks also provide dark blacks, vivid colours, and moisture and fade resistance even on uncoated bond paper at high speeds. New HP large-format printing materials up to 40 inches (1 meter) meet ISO/U.S. technical and offset standard page sizes and provide quick-dry, smear resistant prints. New media to accompany the HP PageWide XL Printer portfolio includes HP Universal Bond Paper for technical applications, HP Production Matte Polypropylene to produce roll-up banners, and HP Production Matte, Gloss, and Satin Poster Papers for point-of-sale applications and poster production.

Availability The HP PageWide XL 8000 series printers are available in India. Other devices in the HP PageWide XL portfolio will be made incrementally available between November 2015 and February 2016.

HP SmartStream software for HP PageWide XL Printers reduces time spent preparing and processing jobs by 50 percent. It also reduces reprints with native PDF management powered by Adobe PDF Print Engine 3 and offers a true colour print preview with interactive HP Crystal Preview technology to turn operator efficiency into operating profit.

Trigon Digital installs India’s first Esko Kongsberg V24 Esko Kongsberg V 24 Signage and Display series – cutting and creasing table with milling head enables an attractive POP for ‘good packages’ on retail store shelves. Headquartered in Mumbai, Trigon Digital is an end to end provider of brand management services with locations in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi and the Middle East. Trigon’s speciality packaging business vertical focuses on offering structural design capability using a combination of software and hardware – Esko’s ArtiosCAD, DeskPack ,Studio which includes 3D Visualizer software and the recently installed Kongsberg V24 cutting table. Trigon helps brand owners conceptualize, visualize and create a final packaging design, ready for print production. The company has been using Esko software for this purpose for several years along with the Kongsberg XL 20 sample making table. Brand owners also rely on Trigon for their signage and POP displays.

“Today more and more of our packaging customers want to grab a part of the lucrative Sign & Display industry. Because Esko’s tools remain the same for both segments, they can optimize their investments by offering multiple services to brand owners with the same set of tools, human resources and domain knowledge.” – Srihari Rao, Esko India

Expansion in signage and display Trigon recently installed the Kongsberg V 24 cutting table with a MultiCut head. The Kongsberg V is used in their packaging division but also mills various hard materials (ACP, MDF, acrylics) used in signage and display production. This is the first Kongsberg V series cutting and creasing table with milling head to be sold in India. Mr. Vineeth Viswanathan, Business Head AsiaPacific and Europe of Trigon Digital Solutions, says, “Diversification is extremely important for us as it is for any business, for our brand owner customers just having a good package is not enough for it to sell in today’s world. The package also needs to be displayed on an attractive POP in the retail store to catch the attention of the buyer. We spotted this need of our brand owner customers and proposed that Trigon can help them in this area.”

Now Trigon can produce both packaging samples as well as POP display in the required numbers. Having a Kongsberg V 24 gives it the confidence to churn out 100 to 200 POP’s consistently day in and day out with the highest quality and accuracy that a brand owner can demand. Mr. Anil Namugade Director of Trigon Digital explains why he went for the Kongsberg again, “Investing in a bigger and more powerful Kongsberg for our Sign & Display requirements was a natural choice due to Esko’s excellent after sales support and product reliability. Also we can now calculate the time and material savings we are achieving due to the seamless integration between Esko’s software and the Kongsberg table, which significantly reduces the total cost of ownership. However, adding a second bigger machine was a challenge due to space constraints, Esko solved the problem by taking back our old XL-20 machine and keeping its promise of helping their customers grow. So we can say investing in Kongsberg always pays and does not stop you from thinking about upgrading when needed.” Mr. Shrihari Rao, Esko’s Sales Director for India says, “Today more and more of our packaging customers want to grab a part of the lucrative Sign & Display industry. Because Esko’s tools remain the same for both segments, they can optimize their investments by offering multiple services to brand owners with the same set of tools, human resources and domain knowledge. Trigon is successfully doing just this and this is their 3rd investment in our Kongsberg table in less than 5 years.”

Mr. Viswanathan explains that the process of creating a POP is similar to that of creating a new package. Both require structural design, material knowledge and artwork with professional graphics and most importantly the skills to handle brand logos and colours. “We already had these capabilities with Esko’s ArtiosCAD and our earlier Kongsberg XL-20 Flexihead sample maker. The constraint was when it came to finishing hard materials like MDF and acrylics, the newly launched Kongsberg V24 with milling head was the solution.” Satish Nalawade - Production Head and Samir Ahuja – Software Sales Manager BO Esko

Drupa venue announced for 2016 Lenstar Lenticular Print Awards managing director of DPLenticular, which distributes the industry-leading Pacur Lenstar lenticular plastic lens material throughout Europe.

Entries are open for the third Lenstar Lenticular Print Awards, which will culminate with an exhibition of the world’s best lenticular printing at the world’s largest print fair. The nominated lenticular work will be shown in a special wall gallery in the dip! in Hall 7 of drupa, from 31 May to 10 June 2016. It has been growing in popularity in the past decade as the effects have become more accessible, thanks to digital cameras and easier design and production programs. “This award is an incredible opportunity for the graphic arts community to recognize the growing importance of lenticular imaging as a product differentiator and a mechanism for ensuring that promotional efforts stand out from the crowd,” says Daniel Pierret,

This will be a return visit to drupa for the Lenstar Lenticular Print Awards – it was also the venue for the second Awards in 2012. “We are anticipating at least 150 entries from about 40 countries,” says Daniel Pierret. “In 2012 the LLPA gallery saw some 10,000 visitors and we are confident that even more will visit in 2016.” “We are very pleased once again to be partners for the Lenstar Lenticular Print Awards,” says Sabine Geldermann, Director drupa. “The drupa innovation park 2016 will be a global platform for innovation, presenting technology and business solutions for the future. It is the ideal location to demonstrate the creative impact and technical sophistication of the world’s best lenticular print.” Entries are invited for six categories, with one award will be made for each. Each winner will receive a Lenstar Lenticular Print Award trophy created by Dublin Crystal, plus a certificate and a digital LLPA logo to go on websites and stationery. Judging will take place ahead of drupa, by a panel made up of recognized professionals

involved in the creation, production, and promotion of printing. Visitors to drupa will have the opportunity to vote for a special LLPA Supreme Public Preference Award, which will be announced after the show finishes. The categories are: • Sales material – merchandising products such as postcards, posters, etc. • Premium promotional material – objects, magnets, gadgets, accessories, gimmicks, etc. • Packaging material – book or magazine covers, CD, DVD, in-pack content, partial or full on-pack content, other packaging, etc. • Promotional material – point of Sales or point of purchase such as poster, shelf tag, wobbler, display, aisle decoration, face frames, etc. • Large Format – any format between 711 x 1016mm (28 x 40 inches) and 1219 x 1828mm (48 x 72 inches), produced in offset or digital. • Artistic works – photography or digitally prepared images, created and intended to be a work of art, printed direct to the backside of the lens or laminated • LLPA Supreme Public Preference voted for by visitors to the LLPA gallery at the drupa dip!
