Worldwide demand for Heidelberg subscription contracts – commercial printer Burke Group sees great growth potential.

The Burke Group of Companies has enjoyed soaring growth. Established in 1902 as the commercial print shop “Douglas Printing”, Ian and Shawna Burke took over the company in 2005 and changed the name to Burke Group. In the last ten years, sales have grown from CAD 7.5 million (around EUR 5 million) to CAD 28 million today (EUR 18.4 million). The in Edmonton, Canada-based company currently has 142 employees. “We’ve evolved from a commercial print shop to a solution provider, and offer our customers a one-stop shop – from design to shipping,” explains Ian Burke. “This concept, which includes the online portal and mailing services, is extremely well received. Within the next five years, we’re planning to generate additional growth of CAD 22 million (EUR 14.4 million) through acquisitions.”

Pay-per-use agreement with doubling of overall equipment effectiveness

The subscription contract includes a new eightcolour XL 106 with perfecting, a Stahlfolder TH 82 folding machine, and a Polar N 137 cutting machine.

Key Notes : > Burke Group wants to significantly increase capacity and sales. > Pay-per-use agreement with doubling of overall equipment effectiveness. > In addition to the new machine, two existing machines will also be supplied with Saphira consumables

12

October 2018

The company is planning to increase the current print volume from 18 million to 35-40 million per year. In order to create the increased capacities necessary for this, extensive consultation was provided by Heidelberg. The investment is intended to optimize resources by reducing labour input and waste.

In addition, the existing production area is to be used efficiently and the technology improved. All of these requirements are now fulfilled by the signed subscription contract. It is a complete package comprising machine, software, consumables, and service. The customer only pays for a productive industrial service, in other words the number of printed sheets. “The subscription model fits into our strategy for the future, with which we want to increase our overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) from 13% to at least 26% and in this way achieve our ambitious growth targets,” confirms Ian Burke. “The contract includes consulting services that increase the effectiveness so that we are competitive in a fiercely contested market.”

Subscription contract dovetails with growth targets The subscription contract includes a new eight-colour XL 106 with perfecting, a Stahlfolder TH 82 folding machine, and a Polar N 137 cutting machine. This contract is the first time that the innovative LE UV drying technology has been used on the printing press. The benefits range from the increased productivity to the energy efficiency compared with conventional UV printing, the economy, the variety

pressideas/ commercial printing

of applications, and the impressive colour effect. “This is precisely what we need to provide our demanding customers from industry, trade, gas and water utilities, banks, public institutions, and universities with the best products within the shortest time,” explains Ian Burke. Using LE UV means that the sheets are dry when they reach the delivery, and can go straight into postpress. The Speedmaster XL 106 is replacing a press from a competitor, and joins a Speedmaster

SM 52 and SX 52 in the press room. Both the subscription machine and the two existing machines will be supplied by Heidelberg with Saphira consumables. These are optimally matched to the machines and help to increase productivity. “We are seeing strong demand for subscription contracts worldwide, because more and more customers are seeing the many benefits for themselves. We have

20 contracts in place at the moment, and want to exceed the 100 mark by the end of 2020,” explains Professor Dr. Ulrich Hermann, Member of the Management Board responsible for Lifecycle Solutions and Chief Digital Officer at Heidelberg. “We’re happy that the Burke Group with its corporate philosophy and proven track record has chosen the pay-per-use model.”

Autoprint Blanking Machine 108-2H at Patwa & Sons Autoprint is always a partner in progress for Baroda based Patwa & Sons. Patwa & Sons, started at Baroda in 1974 by Mr. Kunal Patwa has established themselves as a commercial printer for printing and supplying printed cartons to customers mainly from the Pharmaceutical and Engineering segments. They have now carved a niche for themselves in the field of manufacturing and supplying of paperboard cartons.

also have an Offline UV Coating system from Autoprint.

Commenting on their recent installation of the Autoprint Blanking Machine 108-2H, Mr. Kunal Patwa, Director of Patwa & Sons, Baroda says, “An indigenously manufactured “Made in India” machine means zero downtime for printers. Until now the process of blanking the cartons was a manual one for us, which took a lot of time & labour for the process which has now become superfast with the installation of the Autoprint Blanking machine with minimal man power. The cartons are more safe & undamaged, as while compared to the manual process where in the cartons might hold stains or could be torn sometimes etc.

Till date our experience with these Autoprint machines has been quite satisfying and worth the time and money spent. The key features of these machines which appealed to us most is its fully Automized system & speed throughout the blanking and inspection process.

Autoprint in India is the most trusted name for Pre-Post Printing & packaging Machinery with a good feedback from the industry. So we opted for it. Quality first has always been our motto. To be frank, we never checked upon any other machines available in the market as the Autoprint Blanking machine was a tried & tested machine.. Another main reason to invest in Autoprint was to support and promote a “MADE IN INDIA” world class product, he adds. Apart from the Blanking machine, we have also installed the Autoprint Checkmate 50 Carton inspection system and a brand new RMGT-920, 6-col+Coater. We

14

October 2018

With the installation of these machines we can assure 100% quality in the printed cartons to our customers & at the same time we as a company will save considerable time and manpower which is otherwise spent on the carton blanking and inspection process.

Our experience with the Autoprint sales and

service personnel has been really good. They are prompt in providing services to us & they are really making us ready for the future, in all aspects with the help of technology. As of date these new installations have met all our expectations and we are sure that it will help us in a big way when our facilities are audited and for the development of new customers. We expect our customer base to increase considerably and business to grow faster. We can now supply quality material faster to our clients which further can help them meet their deadline. To summarize our investment in the Autoprint Blanking Machine and the Checkmate 50 in one simple sentence “Autoprint - always your partner in progress” he concludes.

Hamillroad Software wins trademark case Settlement pertaining to German trademark case for Auraia DMS clears the way for the relaunch of Auraia DMS Screening. In March 2016,DruckhausHaberbeck claimed a trademark infringement in Germany and issued a cease and desist action against the use of Auraia by Hamillroad’s German distributor. Hamillroad supported its distributor and defended the matter up to the point that the Regional Court of Bielefeld dismissed the claim in March 2017. In parallel with these actions, Hamillroad initiated legal proceedings against Haberbeck for the illegal use and validity of their trademarks. In November 2017, the German Patent and Trademark Office cancelled one of Haberbeck’s trademarks on the grounds of deceptive use. The matter is under appeal by Haberbeck. Following the loss in Bielefeld, Haberbeck

appealed the original court’s ruling and took the case before the Higher Regional Court of Hamm. On the 23rd January 2018, two days before the appeal hearing, Haberbeck agreed to settle all the pending legal trademark actions. The settlement includes both legal costs and compensation, paid to Hamillroad and their German distributor. Andy Cave, Hamillroad’s CEO commented on the settlement: “This dispute should never have gone to court in the first place as it was clear from the outset that there was no case to answer. We tried on numerous occasions to settle with Haberbeck, but they insisted on pursuing the legal proceedings. We prefer not to engage in court action, but if someone

tries to attack us (or breaches our IP) we will defend ourselves and, if we must, take the matter to court, no matter who it is, how long it takes or what it costs.” Cave continues: “The legal proceedings put a pause on our Auraia DMS business in Germany, resulting in a negative impact on our German partner’s sales. We are pleased to have finally closed this chapter and are happy to confirm that we have re-opened the door for new business in Germany.” Auraia DMS is Hamillroad’simplementation of their patent protected Digitally Modulated Screening technology for offset / lithographic printing.

This year’s meeting was already the 14th time that users of the Cortina waterless newspaper press had come together to discuss technical innovations and the latest developments on the market. Under the overall aegis of Koenig & Bauer, the Cortina users gathered at the headquarters of ink manufacturer hubergroup in Munich. “We are proud that the Cortina User Workshop has proved so successful over so many years and that it meets with such positive response,” said a delighted Peter Benz, Cortina project manager at Koenig & Bauer Digital & Webfed. As initiator of the workshop, he also assumed his now traditional role as moderator of the two-day event, which was attended by around 100 participants from 15 countries. He reported on recent sales successes and press start-ups, for example the commencement of production at ICP Roto on La Réunion and the commissioning of the first Cortina section at Coldset Printing Partners in Paal-Beringen, Belgium.

14th Cortina User Workshop The diverse presentations given by representatives of Koenig & Bauer, users and the supplier industry served to promote the sharing of ideas and experiences and to facilitate the formulation of common strategies. As has become customary over the past years, the Cortina User Workshop again received valuable sponsorship and support from numerous equipment and consumables suppliers. Alongside hubergroup and Koenig & Bauer, the companies Prüfbau, apex international, Toray Textiles Central Europe, Verico Technology, UPM, Papierfabrik Palm, Papierfabrik Kriebstein, Sauer Walzenfabriken,

Flint Group, KMi Kwang Myung Ink, Griso Chemie, marks3zet, HEIGHTS Group, Eltosch Grafix, Wifac bv, ContiTech and Q.I. Press Control all contributed to the success of the 14th workshop. Thomas Klebs, managing director for sales at hubergroup, opened the workshop with a few remarks on the current market situation. Koenig & Bauer also addressed the topic of digitisation from the perspective of a press manufacturer. With the broadest product portfolio in the industry, Koenig & Bauer already offers solutions for digital decor printing, metal and glass container decorating, newspapers and digital commercial printing, and is now similarly at home in digital corrugated postprinting with its new CorruJET press.

From practice, for practice The second day was placed under the motto

“From practice, for practice”. As every year, the Cortina users made full use of the opportunities for intensive and interactive discussion, as a source of information and answers to all their technical questions. Last but not least, the workshop also spotlighted new aspects relevant to the production process, such as predictive maintenance and the use of artificial intelligence to detect emerging faults and thus avoid unplanned press downtime through timely preventive

measures. Insights into efforts undertaken to advance environmental protection and sustainability met with equally great interest. The date for the next Cortina User Workshop has already been fixed: Cortina users and supplier industry partners from all over the world will be meeting on 25th and 26th September 2019. The 15th annual workshop is to be hosted by user Coldset Printing Partners in Paal-Beringen, Belgium.

Aiming safeguards for journalists and media professionals WAN-IFRA joins call for UN convention on the protection of media professionals. WAN-IFRA joins forces with a coalition of international organisations to campaign for the adoption of a new UN Convention dedicated to the protection of media professionals. The consortium includes representatives of journalists, media workers, broadcasters, and newspapers from around the world. Meeting at the UN headquarters in New York with state representatives from Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, Latin America, Asia and North America, the coalition set out the case for a new UN Convention with the objective to rectify a gap in international law for binding norms establishing safeguards for journalists and media professionals including cameramen, photographers, technical supporting staff, drivers and interpreters, editors, translators, publishers, broadcasters, printers and distributors. The initiative was launched by the International Federation of Journalists, with a Convention drafted by International Human Rights expert Carmen Draghici, Senior Lecturer in Law, City University in London. During the meeting in NYC, Dr Draghici said that there was a clear case for a dedicated instrument to tackle crimes against journalists as a result of the deliberate targeting of journalists and the systemic impact of attacks on media workers for citizens’ right to know. IFJ President Philippe Leruth said: “A journalist’s murder simply because of his or her activity is a scandal, but a far bigger scandal is that 9 out of every 10 journalists’ murders remain unpunished. The Khashoggi case, like all the others, illustrate that journalists are singled out as a target and as such they need dedicated protection.”

Elena Perotti, Executive Director Public Affairs and Media Policy at WAN-IFRA said “In the current international legal framework there are no binding norms establishing safeguards for media workers specifically. This undeniably contributes to the phenomenon of the accountability bar being reset to the lowest level by States getting away with the normalisation of a culture of violence against journalists.” Johannes Studinger, General Secretary of UNI-MEI told the meeting: “Not a week goes by without us receiving reports of yet more attacks or repression against media workers. Unless there is action we fear that we will just keep talking about more and more attacks. We express our support for the IFJ initiative”. IFJ General Secretary Anthony Bellanger said: “Today was an important first step towards securing enhanced protection for journalists and media professionals. We welcome the support and commitment from member states and our fellow professional organisations and will continue to build a broader coalition to deliver real action on impunity.”

as protection of journalists against attacks on their life, arbitrary arrest or forced disappearances, but also others so far found only in soft law, like: obligation to protect the confidentiality of journalistic sources; not to misuse national security to hinder the work of journalists through arbitrary detention; to conduct an effective investigation where crimes against journalists have been committed, capable of bringing to justice not only the executors, but also the moral authors of crimes The Convention includes not only journalists, but all the media professionals who are at risk every day, from the cameramen, drivers, interpreters etc The Convention allows denunciation of systematic violations by persons other than the direct victims, effectively combating self-censorship. The Convention provides for interim measures and an expedite procedure in case of alleged violations.

QIPC Smart Pre-setting means new youth for old presses NZME (New Zealand) is among sites where savings enabled by QIPC Smart Pre-setting are already being realized. A new Smart Pre-setting feature from QIPCEAE is delivering on a promise to save an extra 150-200 copies with each press start-up. The latest development gives older presses a new lease of life and turns them into modern machines again.

a new, cold tower for the next production. There was a big imbalance between these hot and cold towers at the next start-up. The new software recognizes hot and cold towers and decides on the basis of this how much damp should be added at the next start-up. This makes a big difference.”

Start-up savings Systems form the European specialists – the acronyms stand for Q.I. Press Controls – Engineering Automation Electronics – have been helping optimize performance on both old and new presses for years. Smart Pre-setting is a further application to improve performance of a press without buying new hardware. In addition to the ink keys, Smart Pre-setting also regulates the amount of damp based on self-learning software. “In this way, 150 to 200 copies can easily be saved during start-up,” says director Menno Jansen.

NZME Auckland-based NZME – which prints the New Zealand Herald and a range of other titles including some for Fairfax Media unit Stuff – is among sites where these savings are already being realized and fine tuning promises more. Production manager Russel Wieck says the Smart Pre-setting software gives them more control over start-ups: “We don’t work with a single press line here and often switch between our three presses. It happens that we run for hours with a number of towers and then suddenly have to add

Remote A feature of the Auckland implementation was that it was completed almost entirely remotely, a task made easier by the strong relationship the two have had over many years. “In cooperation with NZME, we did a lot of research into the precise adjustment of the system,” says Menno Jansen. “Finetuning such a software package requires a lot of time and energy. Yet it proved possible to do this with their technicians on site and our coordination from the Netherlands. It says a lot about the user-friendliness of the Smart Pre-setting software”. Russel Wieck says the cooperation has been flawless: “The support from QIPC is perfect, with it helping that our night is their day,” he says. “This allows us to have direct contact with QIPC during our production.”

Up-to-date The result is that the presses in New Zealand continue to compare favourably with more modern machines. “We can now look ahead,” says a satisfied Russel Wieck. “Our press is more than 20 years old, but thanks in part to Smart Pre-setting it is future-proof. This is important in our business. No one else but QIPC is doing much to keep old presses up-to-date”.

Q.I. Press Controls further expands activities in India Kalptaru Offset, Natraj Print House, Saraswati Press, Hexagon Print & Pack and Sanat Printers are five new Indian partners with whom Q.I. Press Controls (QIPC) will collaborate. The Dutch specialist in measuring and control equipment for the printing industry supplies Indian printers with various mRC-3D systems for colour register control. Rakesh Dave, managing director of QIPCEAE India, is delighted to respond to the different orders. He emphasises the versatility of QIPC’s automation systems. “Every press and printing company is different, of course,” he explains. “These orders also involve three different types of machines. For each specific installation, we will really deliver custom work. These orders show once again that QIPC systems can be integrated in any type of web offset press.

Kalptaru Offset In Ahmedabad, an mRC-3D system for colour register and cut-off control is installed on a TPH Orient press. In total, two cameras are involved. Kalptaru will print fewer wasted copies, work more efficiently and deliver higher quality prints thanks to QIPC’s innovative system.

Natraj Print House Natraj Print House, also based in Ahmedabad, will also equip its Pressline press with an mRC-3D system for colour register and cut-off control. This also involves two cameras. As with Kalptaru Offset, these will be installed by QIPC and the staff will receive technical training on site.

Saraswati Press The order Saraswati Press placed with QIPC consists of four different projects, all of which will be carried out at the Kolkata printing plant. Four of these are two colour register mRC-3D cameras installed on a NAPH Graphics press. “Our systems are

already installed on several NAPH presses,” says Rakesh Dave. “That turns out to be a successful combination. Hence this new order.

Hexagon Print & Pack This print shop in Mumbai has an mRC-3D colour register system installed on a TPH Orient press. The first priority of this quality printer from the Bombay region is to further improve the quality of their printing. In addition, the QIPC system will contribute to a reduction in the number of lost copies and a more efficient production process.

Sanat Printers Sanat Printers from Sonipat already has experience with QIPC systems. The good reputation of the Dutch company also contributed to Sanat Printers having a new mRC-3D system for colour register and cutoff control installed on its Harris M600 press. The printer wants to save on the number of lost copies and is convinced of the high technology used by QIPC.

Leibinger JET3up PI: Lighting up the dark side of product marking Printing codes on black plastics with CIJ printers and pigmented inks: this is the dark, problematic side of product marking for many industrial companies, due to the high level of care printers for heavily pigmented inks require. Paul Leibinger has brought light to the dark with the JET3up PI – a Continuous Inkjet printer (CIJ) specially developed for this area, which was on display at the Fakuma trade fair in Friedrichshafen from 16 to 20 October 2018.

developed an automatic nozzle sealing system called Sealtronic. Before the ink jet in the print head turns off, the gutter tube that catches ink drops that are not used for printing automatically moves to the nozzle.

free hydraulics, production can be started up again immediately, even after long production breaks of several weeks,” explains Leibinger. “Often months will even go by until the next cleaning.”

The result is an airtight ink circuit. In the printer’s stand-by mode, an automatic timer activates an ink agitator in the hydraulic system that circulates the ink. Regular motion prevents pigment build-up and clumping.

Leibinger presented a selection of CIJ printers at the Fakuma 2018: the JET One, the JET2neo and the JET Rapid PI.

Continuous Inkjet printers (CIJ) are among the most popular marking systems in the industry. For dark plastics, however, this type of marking only works with pigment inks, also called contrast inks or opaque inks – since conventional inks would be as illegible as the writing of a pen on black paper.

Moreover, Leibinger designed the hydraulics so that they do not require external compressed air. Contamination of the pigment ink by water, oil or rust is therefore avoided. “Thanks to this combination of a nozzle sealing system and compressed-air-

The problem: Processing pigmented inks places high demands on industrial printer hydraulics During production breaks, the tiny particles sink to the bottom and form clumps in the printer’s hydraulics and nozzle. This can result in an illegible typeface and expensive reworking. The result is that before starting up production, the company has to invest in cleaning time. But now, this is no longer necessary. “We want to give companies an opportunity to use their valuable production time productively instead of constantly having to clean their printers,” says Christina Leibinger, Managing Director of Paul Leibinger. “That’s why we developed the JET3up PI – a CIJ printer which is specially designed to handle difficult-to-process inks, greatly reducing the amount of cleaning required compared to other systems.” With the JET3up PI, companies can mark product packaging, cables, pipes, wires and electronic parts on-the-fly during production. At belt speeds of up to 10 m/s, up to five-line texts and graphics in white, yellow, orange or silver-grey are printed on the product surface without contact – on request as a micro-code with a font height of only 0.8 mm.

The solution: Airtight sealing of the ink circuit during production breaks But why is cleaning no longer required with these printers? Because Leibinger has

Flexo is dead. Long live Flexo. Shaping the next decade for packaging printers.

A few traumatic years and much disruption in the graphics business has seen renovation and renewal in many parts of the industry. But none has enjoyed such dramatic rejuvenation as the flexo sector. Chemical and imaging advances are helping flexographers compete with alternative printing methods, including offset, gravure and digital printing. Flexo has shed its former, slightly dowdy, reputation as these advances create exciting new applications, business opportunities and highly capable manufacturing processes.

As over 40% of food produced in India is wasted due to factors that include lack of cold supply chains and accessible packaging materials, over the next ten years in emerging markets, growing cold supply chains will lead to new packaging and labels applications.

Key Notes : > Generation Z “Want It When I Want It Where I Want It” and expect more. > The KODAK FLEXCEL NX System, celebrating its tenth birthday, to ensure flexo’s continued edge. > The next ten years are all about materials science and developers to drive graphics technology improvements.

26

October 2018

Packaging, flexo’s traditional stronghold, gets a lot of attention these days. Digital press manufacturers are eyeing up the sector and packaging producers and brands want new ways to engage with customers. Rob Vermeulen, board member of the European Brand & Packaging Design Association (ePDA), identifies the Z generation millennials who “don’t want to communicate in the conventional way”. Rob’s colleague, Uwe Melichar, President of the European Brand & Packaging Design Association (ePDA), says generation Z “Want It When I Want It Where I Want It” and expect more. “We see a movement from the

major brands to the private label. The private label will become more and more strong and change their communications because they’re not bound to the history”. This is music to the ears of digital printing systems manufacturers working on packaging presses for on demand short run applications. In coming years digital printing will indeed be a bigger part of the services mix, but it will not dominate. Competing with flexo technology’s speed and materials flexibility is tough and flexo technologies such as the KODAK FLEXCEL NX System, celebrating its tenth birthday this year, will ensure flexo’s continued edge.

Looking good Further improvements to flexo prepress will deliver yet higher output quality and productivity, and at a reasonable cost. The KODAK FLEXCEL NX System meets growing customer demands for tighter process control and faster job turnarounds. According to Chris Payne, President of Kodak’s Flexographic Packaging Division, “we’re at the beginning of this transition in flexo for packaging”. The print method

pressideas/ plc

is both taking share from gravure and offset and seeing organic growth. As it becomes easier to control and results become more predictable, investment risks come down. Payne says “flexo is the most adaptable of all print processes and FLEXCEL NX Plate technology supports the step-change in on-press performance required to implement new and more efficient ways of working, such as a reduction in spot colour inks and the adoption of ECG [Extended Colour Gamut] printing. Ink and coating innovations, as well as new screening developments specifically for packaging print, are helping ECG printing implementations spread as colour becomes simpler for flexo printers to manage in software to guarantee accurate colour appearance on the printing substrate. Flexo changes slowly “and we’re not done with investing. FLEXCEL NX technology is one key component as we move forward in the standardisation of the process” according to Payne. He adds that “we have other things that will help to drive even greater efficiency and sustainability”.

Advancing onwards The next ten years are all about materials science and developers working with brands and retailers to drive graphics technology improvements. Digital printing systems produce prints on demand and for very short runs, serving small local producers of goods such as honey or cosmetics, artworks and craft goods. However, for digital printing technology to achieve sufficient scale for Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) will take time. We can expect to see much more variety and diversity in packaging solutions in the next ten years. Creative digital printing implementation models will not be cost effective compared to flexo presses producing 10,000 packaging impressions an hour, a typical short run for FMCG packages. As brand owners demand increasingly bespoke consumer packages, even for trials across a single city, flexo will remain the preferred option. Flexo technology keeps improving process reliability and stability, so supply chains are reforming, and workflow systems increasingly support ECG printing and distributed job management. These are key development areas for major digital press manufacturers, keen to provide competitive advantage over flexography. But with over 500 customers using the KODAK FLEXCEL NX System

in daily production, the company has the necessary experience and market intimacy to keep it at the leading edge of flexo and packaging production.

gravure printing, creating opportunities for flexo printers who have their processes under control.

Flexible flexo There’s more Over the next ten years in emerging markets where keeping food fresh is difficult, growing cold supply chains will lead to new packaging and labels applications. According to the United Nations Development Programme over 40% of food produced in India is wasted due to factors that include lack of cold supply chains and accessible packaging materials. Even in warm places, plastic wraps on coconuts can extend shelf life from four to twelve weeks. And new formats are emerging as shopping habits change, requiring smaller quantities and trial sizes. Dr John Anderson, responsible for business development at Kodak, says, “we’ve gone from supermarkets holding around 9,000 product lines in the 1970s to over 45,000 in the 2000’s”. Varying sizes and versions plus short turnaround requirements add pressure to complex supply chains, and smaller quantities create more packaging. One package for a loaf of bread becomes multiple packages with fewer slices, more likely to be eaten than discarded. This increases packaging but reduces food waste. Sustainability is about balance, so pressure for environmentally friendly packaging lifecycles will rise in line with changing recycling behaviours.

Sort it Anderson explains that Europe has one of the highest levels of recycling in the world … [but] there is a difference between recycling and reusing and recovering components from the product. One of the problems with plastics recycling is getting enough of the material to make it easy and economically viable to recycle. Brands are getting together to develop mechanisms for sorting at recycling plants instead of in the home or at curb side. Apart from the complex politics there are many challenges to achieving this, requiring technology and investment into separation processes, managing mixed components, dealing with contaminants and consumer education. Flexible packaging use will keep rising. We see more and more of this type of package. Instead of a PET bottle we’re seeing flexible pouches with thinner materials. Lightweight materials which stretch on press are not well suited to

Knowing how to prepare for the next ten years depends fundamentally on an awareness of technological developments and being able to see where current trends are heading. The flexo sector is slow moving but working hard to exploit digital workflow and process automation technologies. With more predictable plate making using technologies such as the KODAK FLEXCEL NX System’s, this gets easier. Laser Ablative Mask System (LAMS) technologies widely used for flexo plate production over the last 20 years are reaching their performance limits and are challenged to match Kodak’s speed and output quality, without using additional products and processes involving time and cost. Kodak employs a combination of high resolution film-based mask, KODAK SQUARESpot Imaging Technology and a unique lamination process to create extremely sharp flat-topped dots that are a 1:1 faithful reproduction of the digital file and optimized for printing. This technical approach brings a greater degree of precision to the plate making process and offers significant potential for future developments that will further the evolution of standardized, automated print production. Kodak’s technology allows for the imaging of micro-level, highly engineered patterns on the printing surface of the plate and as Payne explains “the plate’s the thing controlling the ink flow” positively impacting press running speeds. This helps flexo printers move away from outdated practises, to use digital production techniques to reduce prepress process steps. Payne says flexo printing is “still basically a craft industry … where we’re going with production, [it] will be an automated process in future”. But this depends on knowledge within the sector as much as on technology.

Training and knowledge development Understanding how to get the most out of new technologies helps companies improve services to customers and their bottom line profits. But making a change takes effort. Stefano d’Andrea, a technical consultant with the European Flexo Technology Association reminds flexo printers that “new technologies

are useless if you don’t use them in the proper way”. He suggests that flexo printers stop using the press as a proofer because it’s no longer necessary to work that way. d’Andrea has also found that technology, such as the FLEXCEL NX System can make flexo cleaner and greener, for example by reducing environmental impacts using ECG printing which reduces the number of inks required. As well as saving money, ECG printing means less wash up on press, predictable colour control, faster makereadies and more reliable file sharing across output processes. Effective implementation of ECG requires an understanding of digital colour management because as d’Andrea says, “you have to demonstrate how good you are in CMYK to reach expanded gamut”. Offset printers print to ISO print control aims extracted from predefined characterization data sets for different printing conditions. CRPC7, (Characterized Reference Printing Conditions) one of several characterisation data sets used in ISO graphic technology standards, characterises CMYK’s widest colour gamut in offset. d’Andrea points out that “we should be able to do that in flexo” and that brand owners and printers can

work together to ease conversion of process specific data sets for automatic colour data repurposing because “if you can measure it, you can control it”. Over the next ten years we expect to see many more flexo printers improving colour control and output reliability, because this is what their customers want.

Control freaks Output control depends as much on the printing plate as it does on software and robust characterisation data sets. Improvements in plate technology are catalysts for wider changes in the industry and have pushed Kodak to keep refining the FLEXCEL NX System. But they are also spurring ink and coating innovations, and Anderson says, “one of the trends we look at is can the print be part of the barrier properties: can we add stuff to ink to create a barrier?”. A quick examination of some leading brand initiatives reinforces the need for technology solutions. The Pepsi 2025 sustainability agenda is working to achieve zero waste to landfill, through collaborations with other big brands for sorting and processing waste. Pepsi aims for 100% of its packaging to be recyclable by 2025 and

there are already signs that other big names are following suit. Iceland, a UK retailer of frozen foods has committed to becoming 100% plastic-free by 2025. By then we can expect considerable materials advances. Today’s eco materials are made with plantbased products but taking corn from food chain makes food more expensive. Anderson says the “next generation of products will come from waste products from plant materials”, such as a monolayer instead of multilayer substrates which are hard to recycle. Aluminium oxide (AlOx) is “a coating solution. It’s very thin but when you melt the plastic, the AlOx floats to the surface and can be renewed and recycled … the chemistry is really starting to move”. Since 2008, flexo technology advances have focused on chemical and imaging innovations and reshaped the sector. By 2028 flexo printing will match offset for stability and predictability and traditional supply chains will collapse and reform. It will be a bumpy ride but as Anderson says, “it’s all of us together … all of us in partnership driving operational efficiency and sustainability together”. - By Laurel Brunner

Indian Label industry has for the last many years been registering a steady double-digit growth. The industry largely consists of family owned small or medium sized enterprises employing 1-5 label presses. A handful of larger enterprises have surfaced in recent times due to acquisitions or mergers by multinational companies. The size still needs to become bigger to reach the size of large international label producers. Ironically some of the upcoming existing companies in this segment who were growing and appeared to become large players, opted to be acquired rather than go it alone. We do see some Indian owned label companies now rising from the crowds to become evident in growth beyond the average size. It is hoped that they will also not opt to be acquired, we do need indigenous companies that will grow and prove their mettle. There is an imperative need for these companies to break away from being single owner or family driven businesses to become professionallymanaged entities. They need to optimise production processes, manage wastages, invest in workflow automation, etc. leading to continuous growth and better profitability. Stronger bottom lines in the industry is sure to enable printers investing in expansion and employment of new technologies leading to evolution of the industry, presenting state of art products. A large population and expanding retail trade are driving the demand for labels. The industry that originated in just the metro cities is now spreading to the interiors of India, there is need for further growth as printers realise the need to be multilocational to be able to service customers in a large country more efficiently. At this time the exhibition Labelexpo is looked at with interest as it provides knowledge not only to existing printers but also to new entrants. It showcases the best of indigenous and international label production equipment, materials and consumables at one place. India’s label association LMAI not only supports this important exhibition but also adds value to it by organising events on the side lines, making it worthwhile for their printer and supplier members.

Cosmo Films launches metalized velvet lamination film Cosmo Films, global provider of speciality films for flexible packaging, lamination and labeling applications as well as synthetic paper recently launched a metalized velvet lamination film for luxury packaging segment. The newly developed film has been engineered to offer intense silver colour along with rich velvet touch to the laminated paper/paperboard or package. Silver colour is not easy to handle especially when used as a background during printing. It takes longer to dry and also has a risk of ink set off during print stacking. Due to these challenges, printers usually avoid using silver as a background colour. However, graphic art designers prefer silver background as it allows them to make attractive artworks facilitating use of many other shades and the impact it generates with gold foil stamping and UV spot coating. To bridge this gap, Cosmo Films introduced the metalized velvet touch film which is glueable, stampable

and printable. The matte silver coloured BOPP based velvet touch lamination film needs to be laminated to the unprinted paper before going for printing or post lamination embellishments. The film is available for both thermal and wet lamination in 32 and 20 microns respectively and offers excellent printability with offset, UV offset, screen, UV inkjet and laser printing. Apart from providing excellent scuff resistance, the film is perfect for post lamination operations like UV spot coating, foil stamping & embossing. The film is ideal for lamination of premium products like perfume cartons, liquor & wine cartons, gift & jewellery boxes, shopping bags for luxury brands and graphic arts industry. Speaking on the development, Pankaj

Poddar, CEO, Cosmo Films said, “Packaging design is an important differentiator given that the brand owners are extremely conscious of their brand image and consumer experience these days. With the addition of metalized velvet film to the existing portfolio, Cosmo now offers an enhanced portfolio of premium lamination films to choose from.”

GMG OpenColor 2.2 provides integrated measurement data optimization Colour management specialist GMG is releasing an upgrade to its GMG OpenColor profiling solution. Version 2.2 of the multiaward-winning software incorporates automatic, spectral data-based optimization of measurement data. GMG OpenColor creates colour-accurate proofing and separation profiles based on characterization of the planned print production. The user measures test charts or colour patches in order to obtain data needed for characterization. This data is subsequently combined with other parameters from the printing process to create a dynamic profile. Naturally, the data obtained from the calibration process has to be optimized. Erroneous test charts, poor substrate textures, and dust can all cause an excessive degree of distortion. Deviations can also arise from the measuring device itself. Previously, users of GMG OpenColor were reliant on third-party software for optimizing the measurement data or had to subsequently correct profiles themselves in a manual process. With Version 2.2, however, life becomes easier. Thanks to the now automatic optimization of the measurement data, users can create a colour-accurate

32

profile in only a few steps – while achieving market-leading levels of quality. GMG Product Manager Peter Schöffler explains, “The optimization is based directly on the measured spectral data, which is then processed via our spectral model. According to Schöffler, this ensures that the measurement data is preserved and not distorted by conversion into Lab. Ultimately,

he adds, this leads to highly reliable profiles at market-leading quality levels. Within the software, the user can configure and analyze the level of optimization required. CxF/X-4 support according ISO 17972-4 makes the new GMG OpenColor version complete: Now, spectral values along with dot gain steps can be communicated to other parties involved in a print production.

One third of e-commerce shoppers return health and beauty products because of the packaging Esko identifies shopper e-commerce and in-store preferences in new health and beauty packaging study. Esko has released a new study, “Packaging and the Digital Shopper: Meeting Expectations in Health & Beauty,” along with sister companies Pantone, X-Rite and AVT. The study reveals what 3,000 shoppers in North America, Western Europe, and Asia want from health, beauty and personal care packaging, and follows the study “Packaging and the Digital Shopper: Meeting Expectations in Food & Beverage” that was released in June 2018. Qualitative and quantitative data from this new study may be valuable to senior brand leaders in many departments, such as marketing, design, packaging and information technology, in order to gain insights on shoppers’ preferences and expectations regarding packaging in digital and physical shopping experiences within health, beauty and personal care categories. With this knowledge, brand leaders can better simplify and connect their packaging functions, become more agile, and utilize packaging as a way to innovate their products to drive growth. These findings are also useful for creative agencies and packaging converters as they help brand leaders meet and exceed the product and

packaging expectations of today’s digital shoppers. Some statistics from the study are highlighted below: • Sixty-three percent of shoppers foresee purchasing more health, beauty, and personal care products online in the next 18 months • Fourteen percent of online shoppers returned health and beauty products because of miscommunications in online appearance versus what was delivered to their home • Twenty-eight percent of shoppers agreed that they had purchased a new product because they enjoyed the packaging in the prior three months • Sixty-three percent of shoppers say they are highly likely to purchase health and beauty products that are personalized for their skin/body type

Future online shopping expectations With sixty-three percent of shoppers stating that they are likely to purchase health and beauty products that are personalized for their skin/body type, brand leaders need to

start considering how to rapidly personalize functional product attributes and improve that experience for shoppers, including the product instructions. Personalization to the shopper will be less about applying his or her name on the product, and more about product customization. “The data and insights on shopper’s packaging preferences, specifically within personalization, explain why it has become imperative to utilize digital packaging technology tools to increase speed to market and improve overall packaging and product quality,” says John Elworthy, Senior Director of Global Brand Sales. Esko’s President, Udo Panenka, agrees, “Our study highlights the importance of brand consistency. With shoppers returning products because they don’t match what they’ve seen online, leaders at health, beauty and personal care companies should work to connect their packaging value chain functions in order to present unified or custom product imagery, content, brand graphics and proprietary colours at the speed required by digital shoppers.”

Renewed NVC information service on packaging focuses on reliability The NVC Members-only Update (MOU) is celebrating its tenth anniversary since its introduction in 2008 with a series of innovative adaptions. Central to this is the reliability of business information in packaging. The MOU is a unique service, provided on a monthly basis, for those with a professional need for an up-to-date global overview of developments in the field of packaging. The MOU supports NVC member companies worldwide in making optimal business decisions on packaging. The reliability of information is increasingly in the news. The amount of fake news, information manipulated and stimulated by internet trolls or news algorithms, is increasing. Reliable information is paramount for the packaging world now and in the future.

When the NVC was founded in 1953 it was already considered of great importance to support the provision of information to the sector. For example, in paragraph 3a. of the articles of association ‘collating and processing information relating directly or indirectly to anything connected to packaging, in the widest interpretation of the words’ is first on the list of association activities. The new MOU has been made more accessible in terms of content through a new design and is easy to print for off-line use. A groundbreaking feature is the new MOU NVC Café: one week after the publication of each edition, MOU readers can participate in the discussion in this live online environment, with the editor-in-chief of the MOU. Thus, as

an association, NVC forms a unique network via the MOU NVC Café to test the reliability of published, unpublished and possibly yet to be published business packaging information. The first edition of the renewed MOU got published on 25 October 2018.

hubergroup for Carlsberg labels Carlsberg chose the global ink manufacturer hubergroup as main supplier for their beer labels.

The global demand for greener products is growing year by year. Brand owners are responding by increased efforts to optimise not only their products, but also the sustainability of related packaging and other print material. For this reason, the market leading ink manufacturer hubergroup was by mid-2017 the first manufacturer to launch globally a wide range of Cradle to Cradle certified ink series and coatings for sustainable offset and gravure print products. As part of Carlsberg’s ambitious sustainability programme “Together Towards ZERO”, the company is making its products more sustainable and ensuring that consumers can live more sustainable lives. To that end, Carlsberg looked at the entire value chain to improve every part of its packaging, and that also included the ink for their beer labels. To help with that, the company chose hubergroup as the main ink supplier for their beer labels in selected markets.

from the Carlsberg Group. The Global Product & Portfolio Manager SF/ UV of hubergroup Bernd Groh stated during an interview at the annual Cradle to Cradle Congress in Lüneburg: “As one of the first global ink manufacturers, we have taken up the challenge of re-designing our standard sheet fed offset and liquid ink portfolio to

C2C certification. And with great success as you can see with the Carlsberg project, which was possible in no small partby the strong support of Healthy Printing Initiative, founded by EPEA in Hamburg, which is one of the most important platforms to enable sustainable printing for packaging manufacturers and printers. Print the change - print sustainability!”

During an exclusive event held in Copenhagen in September, Carlsberg revealed a series of exciting innovations developed in partnership with hubergroup, and at the same time highlighted hubergroup for its great commitment to roll out better and more environmentally friendly inks in front of the gathered trade press: “Printing inks have major impacts on the recyclability of packaging because they are often recycled along with paper fibers. To improve the recyclability of Carlsberg labels in selected markets, we are using the hubergroup Eco-Offset Ink Premium Plus, which is CradletoCradle Certified™ at the Silver level,” say Carlsberg Brand Director Julian Marsili

Xeikon celebrates 30-year anniversary Jubilee book to mark print’s 25-year digital journey. Over the last year, in a series of articles on the ‘PastPrintFuture’-blog, industry experts Laurel Brunner and Ed Boogaard have been chronicling the 25-year history of digital printing. To commemorate this milestone, there will also be a book of the same title – to be launched during Xeikon’s 30th anniversary celebration. It has been 25 years since the Xeikon DCP-1 and the Indigo E-Print 1000 were introduced at IPEX 1993. The digital printing industry has come a long way since, and 2018 was an excellent moment to explore digital printing’s evolution. The ‘PastPrintFuture’ project set out from the beginning to not just talk technology, say Brunner and Boogaard: “We wanted to focus also on the people that

made it happen, on the changes that digital printing has enabled in business models and in applications, and on how this helps to define the future of the industry.” Brunner and Boogaard managed to engage with a broad range of people that have been closely involved with print’s digital journey in various ways. “We have talked to great entrepreneurs who often have been pioneers in digital print and are still pushing the boundaries. And industry pundits such as Frank Romano, Andy Tribute and Kurt Wolf have helped us to put things in a broader perspective.” Danny Mertens, Corporate Communications Manager for Xeikon, adds: “We hope both the blog and now the book will be beneficial to those who are relatively

new to the industry, and a walk down memory lane for veterans who have been around for a while.” “Writing down these stories and reading through historical publications, we have once again been impressed by what has been achieved in only 25 years – but even more so by what the future may still bring to this industry. Our book is to mark this important moment in time and celebrate print,” say Brunner and Boogaard. And the project isn’t over: “As print’s digital journey continues, we invite all people from the industry to join us: please visit the ongoing PastPrintFuture-blog and keep contributing your experiences, stories and pictures.”

Beck Automation AG presents new BASIC IML Variant In-mould labelling technology for food and non-food applications. The BASIC IML series from Beck Automation AG, Oberengstringen, Switzerland, is now also available for two cavities. The new variant is suitable for 1 to 5 litre buckets. The machine can of course also be operated with only one cavity. This model complements the established and successful BASIC IML model, which is particularly deployed for buckets with product sizes from 5 to 33 litres and was designed for one cavity. The basic structure of the BASIC IML system comprises a stable and compact machine frame. The rapid movements are made possible thanks to the robust machine frame and the use of high-performance servo motors made by Beckhoff. As with all custom IML systems from Beck Automation, the BASIC IML systems also use high quality materials to ensure the long life of the machines. In addition, during development a lot of emphasis was placed on speed, ergonomics and dynamics; this has resulted in the BASIC IML system that is in no way inferior to customer-specific systems. The new BASIC IML system with two cavities has an impressively short and attractive delivery time, just like the first BASIC IML model. Standardised construction means the system can be delivered ex-works just 12 weeks after receipt of order. Along with numerous “Beck standards already available in the basic version, great emphasis is also placed on high levels of flexibility. Round, rectangular or oval products of between 1 - 5 litres, with cavity spacing of 300mm - 575mm are all possible. The arrangement of the two cavities must be horizontal. The included rotary cores, which correctly orient the label, are already available in the BASIC IML system. The BASIC IML system offers a variety of additional standardised options that expand the range of applications.

The new BASIC IML systemfor up to two cavities is supplied with rotary cores as standard.

Unilever and Veolia sign collaboration agreement on Sustainable Packaging Three-year partnership will improve waste collection and recycling infrastructure to help create a circular economy for plastics waste. Unilever and Veolia today announced that they have signed a collaboration agreement to jointly work on emerging technologies that will help create a circular economy on plastics across various geographies, starting in India and Indonesia. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, just 14% of the plastic packaging used globally is collected for recycling after use, with 40% ending up in landfill and a third in fragile ecosystems. In 2017, Unilever made a strong commitment to ensure that all its plastic packaging will be designed to be fully reusable, recyclable or compostable by 2025. To help create an end market for this material, the company also committed to increase the recycled plastic content in its packaging to at least 25% by 2025. These targets are driving real change

partnership in various countries. Marc Engel, Unilever’s Chief Supply Chain Officer, commented: “The scale of the plastic waste issue is getting worse, not better, with the production of plastics expected to double over the next two decades. We all have a lot more to do to address this critical issue and we hope that by partnering with Veolia, a world leader in waste management, we can take meaningful strides towards a circular economy.”

President of Veolia for Development, Innovation and Markets, commented: “There is an undeniable need to transform the current way plastic packaging end of life is managed in order to reduce significantly its environmental footprint. It will take a collaboration of a new kind between all the actors of the value chain. With this global partnership, Veolia and Unilever join forces in various geographies around the globe and, from the collection to the recycling, take a leadership role to redefine a responsible and sustainable future for packaging”.

Baldwin Vision Systems (BVS) will showcase the latest developments and new features for its growing portfolio of defect detection and colour management technology at Labelexpo India 2018 (stand C5, 22-25 November, India Expo Centre & Mart – Greater Noida, Delhi NCR). The new Vision Systems business unit of Baldwin Technology Company, Inc. unites former brands PC Industries, QuadTech, and Web Printing Controls. Hemant Desai, Director for BALDWIN Vision Systems – India, comments, “Guests to our stand will have a first look at some truly exciting new technical achievements. These are some early examples that show—by combining engineering talent and resources—we can take our proven technology to a whole new level. BVS colour management and defect management systems already have a strong presence in North America and Europe, and we are eager to feature these automated solutions here.” One “first look” is the Guardian RTM, a new real-time quality monitoring and reporting tool for the Guardian PQV advanced 100 percent print inspection. Guardian RTM uses a central server to monitor, collect, and display real-time inspection data for multiple presses and jobs—and even across multiple plants—on a simple, uncluttered dashboard user interface. Isaam Lutfiyya, Director of Global Sales & Marketing for BVS, explains, “This dataconnecting technology allows printers to track and compare many different production metrics. Press managers can monitor changes as they happen, and make highlyinformed decisions about print quality, defect management, and even operator-to-operator performance. This is a unique competitive advantage, in that it’s truly the first product of its kind to tie together how you manage your processes, your print customers, and even your people. You’re empowered to quickly identify any mechanical issues, process inefficiencies, or even tailor your operator training to eliminate defects. This new platform opens the door to build even more

44

functionality into the system.” Additional enhancements to the Guardian PQV include automated setup and automated job changeover, limiting operator intervention for a more efficient and accurate inspection process. The system provides true 100 percent print inspection for pharmaceutical, converting, label, flexo, wide, and narrow web applications. Other defect management solutions featured at the show include Guardian OLP PDF proofing and offline inspection, Guardian LSI inspection, and GV-500 Series digital web viewers. BVS colour management workflow technology includes ColorTrack software, which automates the process of delivering absolute consistency from press-topress, shift-to-shift, and plant-to-plant. Significant advancements include options for customized ‘out of tolerance’ alerts, capabilities to reduce changeover time and leftover ink, precise calculation of required ink quantities during job setup, per-job monitoring of real ink costs, and the ability to manage conditions across different processes, presses, and facilities to guarantee brand colour fidelity. New data gathering, production monitoring, and reporting tools will enable quality managers to deliver full production overviews to print buyers and brand owners. These enhancements provide even greater control for highly accurate, fast, pressside correction of ink formulations. Color Measurement with DeltaCam delivers affordable, accurate inline spectral measurement to achieve absolute colour consistency. Packaging converters can utilize automated, full spectral value measurement—in agreement with ISO standards—on film, paper, or board, ensuring that all printed products are

within their customers’ colour specifications. Using InkWeigh software and scales, press operators can eliminate trial and error by weighing and tracking ink corrections at the press for each client, each job. Printers can fully track ink inventories for the creation of new recipes, for managing leftovers, for ensuring full traceability, and for optimizing ink storage to greatly reduce waste and cost. According to Mr. Lutfiyya, “The launch of new products and features demonstrates our heightened focus on providing the latest solutions to meet market demand for fast, accurate, and increased quality control. These enhancements exemplify our commitment to delivering future-proof systems that regularly undergo updates to ensure they meet printers’ changing requirements. The Industry 4.0 technology featured at Labelexpo India is a sign of things to come from Baldwin Vision Systems.”

Durst featured the award winning P5 250 HS printing platform and new Rho 512R wide-format roll printer with new LED technology all three days of the show. Durst also unveiled their professional services software, MAPS (Multi Application Platform & Solutions) and LiftERP, an ERP built by a printer for a printer. “SGIA Expo 2018 started and ended for Durst on a note of high energy and excitement,” states Kevin Currier, North American Product Manager, Durst Software. We launched the Professional Services Group and the MAPS (Multi Application Platform & Solutions) portfolio of streamlined and integrated solutions in Las Vegas. The response to our portfolio of open and integrated solutions from one source was extremely positive. The reception, interest and feedback was as good as we had hoped.” says Currier. Durst featured a new ERP system, named LiftERP, a new venture between LiftERP and Durst that was specifically developed by, and now for leading print providers. “In software we are focused on delivering what the print owners need to operate their business, not the more typical situation where software developers build something and try to convince print owners that it will work!” said Tim Saur, CEO & Managing Director for Durst North America. “These innovative solutions are designed to increase production efficiency while maintaining the required high-quality output.”

The P5 250 HS, the first of the Durst P5 Series is the next generation technology in large-format digital printing. A winner of the prestigious European Digital Press Association (EDP) Award for best flatbed/ hybrid printer > 250m/h, the P5 250 HS is targeted towards high volume industrial production, as well as one-offs in offset quality. The P5 system is more than just a digital printer, it is a print production platform designed to maximize operation and uptime for optimal performance and quality, marking a paradigm shift in digital print and production technology. The Rho 512 Roll-to-Roll Wide-Format digital printer, a core product of Durst’s Rho Series is now available with LED technology. The new LED technology provides the same high print quality and productivity with less power consumption, reduced noise level, and an ozone-free process. To maintain the highquality output it’s known for, Durst developed a new UV LED ink system to accelerate the drying process and to achieve perfect results even with temperature-sensitive materials.

MAPS (Multi Application Platform & Solutions) for Web2Production, Print Workflow and Production Workflow solutions. LiftERP (Elevated Print Production

Management) a comprehensive ERP system focused on the printing industry. Built by a printer, for a printer. Both software suites offer comprehensive workflow management as well as advanced service tools for running today’s PSP’s.

SGIA 2018 Awards Durst was honoured by SGIA in receiving two 2018 Product of the Year Awards. The Delta WT 250 in the category of best RTR/Hybrid/ Flatbed New Technology or Inkset and the Rhotex 325 dual-purpose fabric & softsignage printer in the category of Roll-to-Roll Direct Disperse Ink on Textile. The Product of the Year Award Competition highlights the best digital imaging technologies that keep the specialty imaging community moving forward. Durst, a proud Platinum Sponsor of the SGIA Expo ‘18, provided a first-hand look at next generation technology in action. These cutting-edge products and services create significant growth opportunities for today’s print providers to help them succeed. We want to thank everyone for taking time out of their schedule to stop by the Durst booth and make this the most successful show ever.

“Las Vegas is always a great draw for the SGIA Expo show, and this year the Durst booth was busy all three days”, says Larry D’Amico, Sales Director – North America. “The interest level in the P5 is very high after customers were able to see the speed and quality we were able to achieve with this new printer, first hand.

EFI Fiery DesignPro Ver.4: More power for Graphic Designers EFI Fiery DesignPro reduces design time and delivers true colour separations for stunning textile prints. Apparel and textile design professionals can streamline their design processes, saving significant time and empowering designers to get the best possible print results, with updated and new tools available in version 4 of the EFI Fiery DesignPro software suite from Electronics For Imaging. The new version of this suite of plug-ins gives graphic designers more power than ever before to create and complete designs directly within Adobe design software. Unlike many other products for textile design, Fiery DesignPro eliminates the need to reduce designs to indexed colours, maintaining the highest possible fidelity of the artwork. It also creates smoother transitions and gradients, retaining more depth in designs and delivering optimum colour results, especially for digitally printed textiles. The new software is featured with EFI Optitex 2D and 3D CAD software, EFI Reggiani industrial textile inkjet print technology, and the Fiery proServer digital front end (DFE) in a complete EFI Textile Eco-System in booth 301 at the October 18-20 SGIA Expo in Las Vegas. Apparel designers rely on EFI Fiery DesignPro tools and EFI’s comprehensive service offering to streamline and simplify their work creating complex designs. “EFI Fiery DesignPro has been a great program for us. Because it dovetails with the Adobe Creative Cloud, the program is very flexible, even for our new users,” according to Patagonia Senior Textile Designer Julie Seefeld. “The Fiery DesignPro team has been absolutely wonderful to work with, and their accessibility and commitment to customer service are huge assets.” Streamlined repeat patterns, color separations and colorways New Fiery DesignPro RSe tools launched with version 4 include Adobe Photoshop plug-ins that significantly reduce the time and effort needed to create multi-channel separations, colorways and repeat patterns directly within Photoshop, all with the added

convenience of a streamlined “Print to Fiery” function to send designs directly into production through an EFI Fiery proServer DFE. Even for complicated designs, the software provides powerful, easy-to-use tools that do not require special skills. Photoshop and Fiery DesignPro are closely integrated and designers can conveniently switch between the two toolsets. Users gain a significant expansion in design options with the ability to create repeats from any full-colour design and view both the design and multiple repeats simultaneously while designing. Following the repeat process, users can separate colours into multi-channel artwork for easy recolouring, while preserving more depth in the design. These features replace labour-intensive operations and the need to work in multiple software applications that were previously required to accomplish each of these tasks. Tech innovation that unleashes designers’ creativity For Québec, Canada-based Alphi Apparel Group, Fiery DesignPro software results in faster creation of new designs and opens the door to new design possibilities. “The Fiery DesignPro design tools have become indispensable to me,” said Alphi Apparel Senior Designer Rhonda Shechtman. “This easy and affordable design suite allows me to create designs I was unable to achieve

before. Designing takes a fraction of the time, I can be more creative, and the tools are a pleasure to use.” “Digital textile printing is prompting users to create stunning designs that include smooth gradients and complex overprints – something that was not as simple to achieve in the analogue world,” said Toby Weiss, senior vice president and general manager, EFI Fiery. “This full set of advanced design tools is the only textile solution in the market that works directly within Adobe products without the need to launch other software. As a result, designers have more power to unleash their creativity by working with multi-colour designs within the same Adobe interface in an integrated toolset.” The new version of EFI Fiery DesignPro software is now available from EFI and authorized EFI resellers. EFI Fiery DesignPro is part of a complete ecosystem of advanced products for textile design and production, including the EFI Fiery proServer DFE and EFI Optitex, the cutting-edge 2D and 3D integrated platform for product development and design used by leading brands and retailers worldwide. EFI’s portfolio of solutions also includes EFI Reggiani, a leading line of printers offering eco-friendly digital production with stunning colours and colour fidelity using a variety of inks to support virtually any fabric type.

Xaar 1201 opens up new graphics markets for Chinese OEMs The superb print quality and versatility of the Xaar 1201 printhead is opening up new markets for Chinese OEMs in wide-format graphics – as recently underlined by the printhead’s presence on XuCheng’s stand at SGIA 2018 in Las Vegas. Used in XuCheng’s PRIMO X3500 flatbed industrial printer, the compact Xaar 1201 printhead delivers a high level of print quality and performance. Designed for easy integration by printer manufacturers, it features 1280 nozzles that jet variable dropsizes. These produce high-quality graphics and textiles on a wide range of substrates at an apparent resolution of up to 1440 dpi.

This is a real milestone for our business.” This success is driven by two factors: firstly, how Xaar and HaoCheng, the company’smaster distributor in Greater China, work together to provide Chinese OEMs with the key resources(including training, electronics, inks and printheads) required to develop a printer; and secondly, HaoCheng’s full integration support. This model facilitates shorter product

development cycles and reduces time-tomarket, and has already contributed to the Xaar 1201’s impressive adoption-rate across Asia. “The recent increase in uptake of the Xaar 1201 in Asia together with our partnership with HaoCheng is enabling Chinese OEMs like XuCheng to get ahead and move into other territories such as the difficult-topenetrate US market,” comments Simon Kirk, Xaar’s Senior Product Manager for the Xaar 1201.

The Xaar 1201 printhead is also able to print one, two or four colours, and can handle a wide range of ink types including UV, ecosolvent, aqueous and dye-sublimation. “The Xaar 1201 is vital to our PRIMO X3500 printer,” says James Zhou, General Manager at XuCheng. “It delivers high-quality, stable printing and its ink versatility allows us to better meet customer needs, meaning it can succeed not only in Asia, but also in countries like the US. We are very happy that, enabled by the Xaar 1201, the PRIMO X3500 could be shown for the first time at SGIA.
