Brand new Heidelberg Speedmaster SX-74-4, Polar 115PF for Florid Print & Pack The recent investment in the Speedmaster SX-74 four-colour press and a Polar 115PF cutter are part of their business strategy to explore new revenue opportunities. Managing Directors - Hitesh Mittal and Girish Mittal spearhead operations at Florid Print & Pack. Running a successful stationery business in Punjab, the Mittals were outsourcing printing jobs as a value-added service to customers. On perceiving strong demand, they decided to leverage the market potential and expand into printing business. They have recently invested in a brand new Heidelberg Speedmaster SX-74 four-colour press and Polar 115PF cutter, which are a part of their business strategy to explore new revenue opportunities. “Our confidence in this opportunity is reflected by our recent acquisition of a brand new Heidelberg SX-74 and Polar 115PF. We expect to build on the strong connection we have already established with our customers,” beams Hitesh Mittal. The Heidelberg Speedmaster SX-74 is winning combination of the cutting-edge technology of the Speedmaster XL class with the tried-and-tested platform of the SM series. The hybrid press is designed for ergonomic operation, shorter makeready and throughput times, with production speeds of up to 15,000 sheets per hour.
Our recent investment in Heidelberg’s SX-74 and Polar 115PF cutter has positioned us to tap into a lucrative market segment. We look forward with excitement, as we embark on our new venture.” – Hitesh Mittal
“The SX-74 is a dream,” pipes in Girish Mittal, “the price/performance ratio is impressive. Currently, we are starting out with single-shift operations. We find the press extremely cost-efficient for short-run jobs and frequent job changes, even for a one-shift model like ours.” Engaged in commercial printing, publishing and
packaging, Florid Print & Pack specializes in visiting cards, Flyers, posters, diaries, calendars, brochures, letter heads, invitation cards, flex boards, envelopes, and magazines…to name a few. “The SX-74 provides amazing color stability and standardization to print output. The press is an ideal fit into our business,” comments Girish Mittal. “Heidelberg’s proprietary colorimetric control using the Prinect system ensures 100% color fidelity through print production. This reduces paper wastage, while promoting easy reproducibility,” says Sunil Kumar, Senior Sales Manager. Florid’s recent investment in a brand new Polar 115 PF cutter also plays an imperative role in its postpress production efficiency. A high-speed cutter that is best-suited for offset formats of 63 x 88 cm, the Polar 115 PF is the best-seller in its class of equipment. An OptiKnife knife changing system facilitates faster knife changes and shortest make-ready times, leading to high efficiency. The Polar positioning-system DPS with a mechanical positioning accuracy of 1/1000 mm renders the greatest cutting accuracy to the Polar 115 PF. The stability of the single-piece machine frame lengthens lifespan and makes the Polar 115 PF highly reliable for everyday use. “Our recent investment in Heidelberg’s SX-74 and Polar 115PF cutter has positioned us to tap into a lucrative market segment. We look forward with excitement, as we embark on our new venture. A big thanks to Heidelberg India for supporting our dreams and growth initiatives,” concludes Hitesh Mittal.

Think Print: IFRA World Publishing Expo with an extensive offer for print products From 10 to 12 October the IFRA World Publishing Expo, for the first time together with the new parallel DCX Digital Content Expo, is coming to Berlin. Besides innovative digital solutions for content and news, print production remains the most important mainstay of the event. The IFRA World Publishing Expo will show innovations for the complete print production chain: Industry leaders, such as ABB, Agfa, Ferag, DotLine, HP, Fuji, KBA, Kodak, Krause-Biagosch, manroland, Müller Martini, Papierfabrik Palm, Schuite & Schuite, Schur and UPM will be present as exhibitors. The combination with an international congress programme makes the exhibition the “place to be” for media companies and corporate publishers. In addition, the new spin-off event, DCX Digital Content Expo, is proving to be highly popular. This concurrently held exhibition focuses especially on the digital news business.
Print and Online – two sides of a medal “With about 180 exhibitors, the exhibition will again be significantly bigger than in the last years”, says Alexander Petsch, CEO of Publishing Exhibition, the organiser of the event. “Digitisation is a must for newspapers and news media. But high-quality print products remain popular among readers and enjoy their trust, which is why they are often more successful in advertising than is generally assumed,” says Thomas Jacob, COO of WAN-IFRA. “The necessary investments in the digital sector should not lead publishers and content providers to forget print products. The IFRA World Publishing Expo is THE worldwide market place for finding out what is going on right now in the printing industry.” Besides suppliers for the entire newspaper production process, paper producers and leading press manufacturers, retrofitting solutions will be shown also at the Expo.
The Print World conference Parallel to the exhibition, industry experts will report at the Print World conference about latest trends, such as Print 4.0, a new level of automation in data handling, press and mailroom operation as well as different strategies for attracting new readers – with quality, by addressing target groups, or focusing on local news.

Kapoor Imaging presents Violet Plates to the newspaper industry During recent WAN-IFRA, Kapoor Imaging focused on their new Violet plate which we the company had launched recently. “From next year we will be manufacturing this plate in our Chennai facility,” informs S.Giridharan, CEO, Kapoor Imaging. The company has already done some trial runs with a few top newspapers and the results are encouraging. “We will be the second manufacturer of Violet Plates in the country after Technova,” says Giridharan.

Arun Ram, Editor, The Times of India, Chennai, sharing perspectives of the quality of journalism and how to address this issue Knud Kraft, Head of Production, Axel Springer, Germany, presenting a case study of adopting innovative methods to keep the printed newspaper attractive. P P Prakash, Vice President – Materials, Malayala Manorama, speaking about managing newsprint costs and logistics.
The conference can be followed on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ wanifraindiaconference and on Twitter with hashtag #wii2017. The winners of the second edition of South Asian Digital Media Awards also get presented at the same venue.
Another area they are focusing is to re-launch Negative PS Plates. “Presently all newspaper publishers are keen to cut down their production costs. Our PS Plates will work in CtCPs. We are going to launch a high speed UV Setter which will process sixty plates in one go for newspapers and over 100,000 runs in Negative Plates for high-run jobs. The main feature of the Negative Plates is that though the exposure is negative, processing will be a positive developer with a dilution of 1:9 which means the pH is also not very hazardous to the environment. The high run length will reduce the cost of production without any compromise on the quality of printing,” Giridharan further says explaining the key features. Kapoor Imaging also presented their recently launched Press Room Chemicals in collaboration with RBB Chemicals of USA. “We have made some trial runs with some newspaper publishers on their high speed machines. We have chemicals for spray
damping and integrated chemicals which will work with spray, brush and UV. If any customer uses all three processes, he will need one chemical only. Apart from this, we have high speed auto wash and regular wash chemicals. All these are manufactured in our Chennai facility,” continues Giridharan. The industry, according to Giridharan, is growing at a steady pace and will continue to be promising for next five to ten years. “Digital cannot take over conventional printed newspaper in India,” he says. However, he believes that in the future the industry has to innovate and find creative ways to present news and advertisements. Welcoming the GST, he says, “It has helped us to seamlessly move goods across the nation under the “One Nation One Tax” concept. It is very simple and straight forward to implement. We have already initiated the “Make in India” concept in our manufacturing facility in Chennai.” Last year was not a growth year for Kapoor Imaging. It bore the demonetization effect. “Our growth did not fall either. We are sure this year we will grow. We are participating in IFRA after a long gap of over eight years. We are not happy with the reduction in the number of days for the exhibitors. This year with the launch of many new products we wanted to participate. Three days is the ideal show period. Only then customers will have sufficient time to come and discuss with us,” he concludes.
WAN-IFRA is the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers. Its mission is to protect the rights of journalists across the world to operate free media, and provide its members with professional services to help their business prosper in a digital world and perform their crucial role in open societies. With formal representative status at the United Nations, UNESCO and the Council of Europe, it derives its authority from its global network of leading news publishing companies and technology entrepreneurs, and its legitimacy from its 80 national association members representing 18,000 publications in 120 countries.

The fact that Content-X can process different font systems is paying off for The Printers Mysore in the Indian state of Karnataka. Both the daily Prajavani, which is produced in the regional language Kannada, and the English language daily newspaper Deccan Herald are produced with the editorial solution Content-X now. The transition to the new editorial workflow only took a few months, the go-live of the dailies was accompanied closely by ppi Media and Digital Collections staff on site. Content-X allows the editors of The Printers Mysore Ltd. not only to create print products more efficiently and in a structured way, the introduction of Content-X also forms a productive basis for the company’s future digital strategy. The system is being used by numerous other media companies in Europe, Asia and the US, and is based on the internationally successful DAM system DC-X by Digital Collections, which enables journalists to work extremely flexibly thanks to its browser-based Story Editor and its line-byline preview. The daily Prajavani is printed at seven different locations and is published in 32 regional editions across Karnataka. FIG turns to QIPC automation Places order for an automatic colour register system to answer frequent production changeovers. Portuguese printing concern FIG has placed an order for an automatic colour register system with the Dutch specialist in optical measurement and control systems for the printing industry, Q.I. Press Controls (QIPC). The system will be installed on a 2011 Goss Community press which has recently been acquired by FIG.
printing press,” states Harold Drinhuyzen. “Because of the intense usage, our system has a crucial role to play in the production process on this Goss Community.” Jorge Dinis, FIG’s financial director, reiterates this: “We are expecting savings in waste, ink and personnel. At the same time, thanks to QIPC’s system, we’re anticipating major improvements in the quality of the endproduct.”
Snap decision The printing plant in Coimbra, halfway between Lisbon and Porto, has been looking at possible ways of expanding and improving its production processes for some time. Even before acquiring a new press, FIG decided to have one fitted with QIPC automation systems. “Our Portuguese agent, Duarte Alves de Sousa, managing director and owner of Tecnimprensa, discussed the matter with FIG even before there was talk of a new press,” explains Harold Drinhuyzen, sales executive at QIPC. “At that stage it was already clear that the best technical solution
for their specific application was ours.”
Production changeovers Production at FIG is subject to frequent change rounds, partly because the plant is responsible for printing several regional newspapers for all the country; mostly weekly, biweekly, monthly and, and also four daily: Diário de Coimbra, Diário de Aveiro, Diário de Leiria e Diário de Viseu. “That meant that efficiency in the startup process was a key issue for the new
In total, FIG has ordered eight mRC-3D cameras for automating the colour register. The cameras are fitted with optional Automatic Ink Mist Shields (AIMS) for automatic cleaning of the lenses. The systems will be installed once the press has arrived in Portugal. “We’re absolutely convinced this is the best register control system for rotary offset printing presses,” Jorge Dinis concludes contentedly.

Manroland India focuses Web Presses, Print Services and Maintalligence PRESSIdeas spoke with Sudeep Bhattacharjee, MD, Manroland India during the recent WAN-IFRA India Conference in Chennai. Manroland India focused on three key areas during the WAN-IFRA India in Chennai – Web Presses, Print Services and Maintalligence. “We are looking at three areas,” says Sudeep who explains, “the first is Web Presses – the Cromoman 4 x1 newspaper press which is already running in Times of India and Namaste Telengana. This is a press made for the Indian market. It has a low height and is guarded against power fluctuation and all other aspects for Indian market conditions are taken care of. Looking at today’s market in India, this press suits well, especially for the regional newspapers.” He adds, “The second area that we are focusing here is our Print Services. By this it does not mean supply of spare parts only. Under Print Services, we are looking at the Pecom-X and Market-X. Pecom-X is our operating system for Manroland presses. We are now making this technology available off the shelf and extending this operating system to other big non-Manroland equipments. We recently did a major upgrade with a Bobst press in the USA. Two more such upgrade jobs are underway. Unlike other companies doing such refurbishing and upgrade jobs, we are different. We are a full fledged printing company. So nobody understands a printing machines better than us. The second area that we are looking at is Market-X. We already have the Manroland store. What we are now doing is extending this platform to nonMan-roland equipments. Other equipment manufacturers, be it press, post press etc, can use this platform to sell their wares and services. Market-X will be an online platform, a global source for any manufacturers and buyers to sell and buy printing equipments and services.” The third area is Maintalligence, which means manroland’s maintenance using sensors. Sudeep elaborates, “We are trying to extend to the industry the concept of 4.0 in print. We use internet of things, data computing, cloud computing etc. to service printing presses. Earlier for printing presses, you had preventive maintenance, break down maintenance and then came
18

in predictive maintenance. Now, using advanced computing technologies, are trying to predict when any equipment would fail and take appropriate timely action to eliminate downtime. We do this by putting in lots of devices and interconnecting all these by using internet of things so there is a data exchange between different devices and generate a report for the customer. We also extend this by using the data to do a data analytics. This is a concept which we are extending to the printing press; presently to Manroland presses and may add to other presses later. This we believe is the way for the future as the customers will be keen to reduce costs, increase production efficiency with lesser man power.” The other area manroland focused on was the Print.Com business, a portfolio of blankets, rubber rollers and press room chemicals. “We have tied up with some European suppliers and extending their services in India at Indian price,” says Sudeep. Speaking on the industry sentiment he puts in, “The entire Indian economy has slowed down and also the newspaper industry. One has to be aware of the slow down and take
precautionary steps to sustain and get over this slow down. It’s a temporary phase and I am very optimistic of the future. The economy will bounce back. The regional newspapers are growing, the national newspapers are retaining their markets – India is different, unlike the western countries,” he emphasises. As opposed to the threat of Digital media and e-newspapers etc., Sudeep sees the real threat in the fact that new generation is not reading as much as the earlier generations would. “Though the printed version of newspapers is growing, the next generation just reads the headlines and the mobile platforms are the best way to disseminate these headline news constantly. This would have happened even if digital had not come in. The change in reading habits has affected the newspaper industry. As regards opportunity we are now looking at a readership coverage of more than 12% of the population due to increase in literacy rates, and this is a huge opportunity for the industry. However, we have to keep innovating to disseminate news contents and give more value and returns to the advertisers,” he suggests.

ABB: serving Indian newspaper industry since 2000 ABB has been associated with the newspaper industry globally for more than 100 years. In India ABB has a sizeable presence, though not directly. “Since 2000 we have been supplying our equipments to leading press manufacturers like Manroland and KBA,” informs Damian Staedeli, Head of Printing, ABB Switzerland. “We are also an independent supplier of Press Management Systems and Press Control Systems and integration to mail rooms,” adds Damian. “India is a growing market due to growth in literacy levels and their only immediate access to information is through newspapers. Our information is that this growth will reduce once more and more readers get access
headline readers and not interested in deep journalism and hence they get the news from Facebook, instagram, Google, television etc. The present culture is not to pay for these headline contents. Therefore the future is for local newspapers with local contents not covered by the online headline news snippets,” he continues, speaking about the Indian newspaper industry in general.

When asked about the GST, he says that earlier taxation was very high for imported equipments. “I understand that all these have been rationalized and thus it would be good for the industry,” he concludes as he was speaking to PRESSIdeas during the show.
Muller Martini (India) highlights entire range of Mailroom System Muller Martini (India) highlighted the entire range of their Mailroom System at the WAN-IFRA India Conference. The mailroom specialist presented the Conveying system the newly launched NewsgripS – a single grip conveying system launched three years back. “We have several installations of this system in Malayala Manorama at their different print locations,” says P.R. Lakshminarayanan, GM, Muller Martini (India). “Recently they have added three more lines which will be installed in 2018. We also have a relatively more economical conveyance system called the NewsVeyor which is for lower speed presses of less than 50000 cph which requires only one stacker for delivery. Then we are focusing on our Inserting systems – the Flexline and FlexPack which were displayed in the last Drupa,” he adds about the other highlights at the expo. Sharing his views about the newspaper industry today, he says that the industry is growing but “the situation is not the same with all the newspapers. It is different at different places with different segments across the country. Some of the regional language newspapers are growing faster than the English language newspapers. The expansion and growth is more in Tier II cities than in the major metros. So we expect more investments in the coming years in these areas and regional language newspapers.” On the invasion of Digital and e-papers, he
says that though these new products may take away some readers yet there would be new readers, especially from the rural areas where the literacy rate is growing. “Moreover the government is focusing more on education which will provide new opportunities for the newspapers,” he believes. “There is an ongoing process with all major newspaper publishers to present the contents and advertisements in more innovative ways which are bound to increase readership and give more mileage to advertisers, thus increase the revenue for the publishers as well. Muller Martini has some very special solutions in this respect, which has still not caught up here in India. Progressively those ideas will become relevant here too,” he continues.
Lakshminarayanan looks confident about the positive outcome of new government regulations including GST, “We stand to benefit with the implementation of GST. The sale process is more seamless and there is lot of tax credits which are more beneficial to both the seller and the consumer.” However, Muller Martini has not taken any initiative towards the “Make in India” efforts of the government as “we don’t find the required volumes in the Indian market”, says Lakshminarayanan. WAN-IFRA was a good show for Muller Martini. “Reducing the length of the show by WAN-IFRA has been a move in the right direction. With only paid visitors, the quality of the visitors was good and there was no adverse effect of the change,” he concludes.

OneVision Software’s new Raster HD for higher level of colour tones Sundaram Sathappan, Technical Support Manager, OneVision Software, was at WANIFRA India Conference. He told PRESSIdeas that their focus this time was the new product Raster HD. The high definition screening with the RIP is a combination of FM and AM. “This gives a higher level of colour tones,” says Sundaram, “than a regular FM or conventional screen. We also have image enhancement solutions. We have many customers in India for these products.” OneVision had a good show. The industry, according to Sundaram, is doing well, particularly in the regional and micro level vernacular newspapers. “The National level newspapers do have a fixed market. We are optimistic of the future,” he continues. OneVision now serves a wider spectrum of industries. Earlier it had been predominantly catering the newspaper industry. “But now our products have wider applications in different markets like wide format printing, digital printing, labeling, packaging, commercial printing etc. We have diversified
into different segments and look forward to serving many neighbouring countries around India which are still to be explored by us,” he adds. OneVision had the same foot falls as they got

Aarushi highlights Web Blankets range at WAN-IFRA Aarushi Agencies highlighted their range of Web Blankets at the recent WAN-IFRA India Expo. “We have a new series of blankets for web applications which are very versatile,” informs Ashish Sharma, MD, Aarushi Agencies. The latest blankets feature high compressibility and excellent printability. Ashish finds a lot of opportunities in present newspaper industry. “Though in the long run, digital may replace newspaper printing as a media, in India the newspaper growth is static and steady, which is good for us,” he says. “In the developed economies the newspaper industry has slowed down,” he adds. In India, he says, the vernacular and regional newspapers are still growing since there are large un-penetrated areas for the newspaper industry in rural areas. Even the national newspapers are looking to enter into these markets.

QIPC-EAE India: Upgrade to add 5 to 10 years to your presses “In this show we are highlighting the Desk 7 console, which we had launched in the last Drupa,” reveals Vijay Pandya, MD, QIPC-EAE India during the WAN-IFRA India Conference and Expo in Chennai. The Desk 7 console is an innovative, ergonomically developed, nicely designed control console which is the central control for any press. This console enables entire press operation control from a single desk. “This is an extremely user-friendly equipment and makes the operator’s life quite simple during press operations,” says Vijay Pandya. QIPC recently had a synergic tie-up with EAE. With this tie up QIPC-EAE will offer a complete package to newspaper houses to refurbish their old presses to extend their life and make them more efficient and operator friendly. “Given the present sluggish growth and stagnant situation in the newspaper industry, reviving and refurbishing existing presses can be highly beneficial for newspaper producers who can add 5 to 10 years to the life of their existing newspaper presses through QIPC-EAE upgrades,” adds Vijay. Vijay perceives that the economic slowdown
due to recent government regulations has subsided and the industry, particularly the vernacular newspapers are showing signs of growth. “Fresh investments are now happening in this segment and ideas for improvisation of the newspaper industry are taking place. I am very optimistic about the industry as of now,” he stresses.

APL Machinery showcases UV and LED UV Curing Systems Faridabad based APL Machinery displayed LED UV and UV curing system for the Web Offset newspaper industry at the recently concluded WAN-IFRA expo and conference in Chennai. “Like every other industry, the Indian newspaper industry was going through difficult times but it will come out of this difficult phase soon,” shared C.P. Paul, CMD, APL Machinery while speaking to PRESSIdeas. The threat from the Digital process is more keenly felt in the western world but in India it will take another four to five years for Digital to really make inroads, he thinks. At the moment newspapers in India is a growing industry. Both national and regional vernacular newspapers are growing. “We see big advertisers for online shopping like Amazon and Flipkart etc. are advertising in the national newspapers for reaching their targeted markets. India has the largest
circulation for printed newspapers in the world,” he adds. Speaking about his range of offerings, Paul says, “Our products like LED UV and UV curing will give more options for print finishing of the printed newspaper. With these new and wider print finishing options the
printed newspaper can be more effectively and attractively presented to the readers. This can not only increase their circulation but also increase their price and margins.” He concludes by saying that the temporary effect of recent changes like GST, once overcome would be positive for the industry.

Cadgraf Digital integrates various solutions in one single system Cadgraf Digital’s WAN-IFRA focus included their range of solutions for the newspaper industry. All integrated into one single system, Cadgraf offered – Anygraf editorial workflow system, advertisement booking system and CR system and the Circulation and Booking system. “The second product that we are showing here is from MWM, Finland,” says A.Elangovan, MD, Cadgraf Digital. “With this product we can track the production process in a newspaper house using a sensor, in our mobile. How many copies have been printed; what is the speed at which the press is running; wastage at different stages etc. – all these can be measured. It can integrate both the press and the post press,” explains E.Anand Jeeth, Director, Cadgraf Digital. “Now that our customers are coming out of the temporary adverse effect of recent government regulations and having accepted them, we hope to grow our business this year as compared to the last year which was more or less static for us,” continues Elangovan. He thinks that, unlike other global markets, the Indian newspaper market has still some potential to grow and is growing year on year. “There is a huge potential for Indian language newspapers. As the population is getting more and more literate the first thing they do is to read newspapers. This leaves many areas uncovered by newspapers today. Special issues, Focused issues, Innovative
ways of presenting news and advertisements are all potential areas for growth. The national English newspapers have more or less reached their potential. This segment is now more into digital newspapers. But on the whole we are very optimistic about the newspaper industry,” he explains. Summing up the threats and opportunities of the newspaper industry, he says, “Digital and the Social Media like Facebook, Google etc. are supposed to be the biggest threats for the printed newspaper. But, I see these
platforms as the real opportunity for the printed version, since authentic and quality content for these social media platforms comes from the printed version. These very qualities of the printed newspaper content will be its lifeline for a long time to come. This authentic, verified and edited content of the printed newspaper will have much for value for the reader and he will keep coming back for it for years to come. The news paper publishers will have to refocus their products and offerings to go with the present taste of the readers, to stay alive.”
New low height Manugraph Ecoline can be operated from floor level “Apart from our regular products, we are focusing here our new machine – Ecoline Newspaper press with a speed of 25000 cph,” says Sanjay Shah, Director, Manugraph Industries. He was speaking to PRESSIdeas during the recent WAN-IFRA. He tells that the height of the tower of this press is 2.7 meters. “The height being low, there is no need for a gallery and an operator can operate the press from the floor itself,” he reveals. Manugraph has already supplied five Ecoline to Punjab Kesari newspaper. Two have been installed and two are under installation. Manugraph is also coming up with a new press – the SLINE. This is a single width machine with the edit feature over CITILINE Express, and can print 40000 cph.

“The newspaper industry in India is very good. We have many installations for regional newspapers, especially in south India,” says Sanjay. Speaking on GST, he says, “GST is beneficial for our business. It is much easier to do business now than before.” However, he cites cost being both a threat as well as opportunity for the industry. “Cost is an important factor for the industry – producing low cost machines will be a big opportunity. Our design for low cost press is in the pipeline and we will inform the industry duly. Cost of production is a threat as well,” he says.

Martyn Train, GM, Graphic Communications, DMO, Xerox Corporation has been associated with Xerox for 21 years, the last five and a half years of which, he is with Xerox Developing Markets. According to him, recently Xerox has collectively delivered some landmark growth performances in difficult and volatile geographies and this as well holds true for Xerox India which achieved great milestones too. “The mid-range colour space has grown significantly over the last 5 years, especially so in India and Xerox plays a leading role in this market,” says Martyn. High end mono volumes have bucked the global trend and grown for Xerox India, fuelled by shorter-run Book Publishing and more recently the demonetisation. “Inkjet is still in its infancy in India relative to the whole market size with some large traditional players in Transactional and Book Publishing having already taken steps to invest. I have absolutely no doubt Inkjet volumes are going to explode in India over the next 5 years as capability, smaller footprint, reduced levels of capital investment and cost down gives greater access to the technology,” believes Martyn.
Xerox Developing Markets Operation – Inkjet, a real growth area Xerox’s DMO focus in India is a combination of consolidation and capturing growth. Consolidating growth in toner based cut sheet machines with new launches of C70, Versant180, Versant 3100, iGen 5 and converging it with best growing applications like packaging and general commercial printing is the key area, according to Martyn. Another key focus area, he says, is capturing growth existing in the Inkjet business where Xerox has fantastic offering on both cut-sheet and continuousfeed machines – from Brenva to Rialto to fast speed Trivor machines – which largely cater to the Publishing, Transactional and Direct Mail printing. Xerox is focused on all segments of Commercial print in DMO, as globally Xerox has a portfolio of solutions to help address the needs of its customers in all segments. Inkjet, is a real growth area. Xerox is developing its iGen technology to help in the Photo,

Commercial print and Packaging spaces. Most recently, it announced white dry ink toner for iGen that will be shown at Print 17 in Chicago in September. “In Xerox Developing Markets, the key characteristics I observe is the sales and partner work ethic and intimacy with their clients – it’s incredibly close, much more so than I’ve observed elsewhere in different geographies,” observes Martyn. “Our growth is driven by true partnership between ourselves, our partners and our clients, solving problems together, grabbing opportunity together,” he adds.
New growth opportunities and Digital Production of Books and Catalogues According to Martyn, there is a lot of potential in the Digital printing market led by rise in Photo-printing, Book Publishing, Shortrun jobs and much more. For example, the Wedding Photography industry today is about Rs 1,800 crore business with a demand for 7.5 million wedding photo albums every year. Roughly 21 percent of the photo products have moved into Digital printing, which is Rs 700 crore market now. “We’re one of the few companies that have such a vast breadth of offerings. We’ve developed a variety of products and solutions ranging from the entry-segment to the mid- and high-end segment,” states Martyn. “We’ve launched a slew of products like Color C60/C70 with energy saving capacities, Versant 80 and Versant 2100 with banner printing capabilities and the ColorPress 1000i with gold and silver ink. All these products are designed to meet specific customer needs like banner printing, book publishing, photo printing etc. and can help accelerate business growth,” he adds. Further, for Photo printing, the Xerox iGen 5 offers a unique colour palate beyond usual CMYK, which can provide a competitive advantage in the marketplace today. These products demonstrate Xerox’s commitment to the market and in 2017, Xerox plans to further strengthen its product portfolio and bring innovative solutions to help customers focus on what matters most – meeting their customer’s needs.
The Digital printing market in India has evolved over the years and today, applications and solutions are essentials in this segment. The overall Printing market in India is growing and Digital printing is one segment that has shown strong growth numbers. It’s driven by improved levels of service, increased versioning and personalization to make targeted printing for end users – and providing Xerox customers new opportunities for business growth. “If you see our Digital Presses, they’re segmented in a way that customers can pick and choose based on their business needs so that the devices can add value rather than being a cost churner,” stresses Martyn.
Xerox’s technologies – leading the future digital production in India “The government’s ‘Digital India’ initiative is transforming the country into a digital-first economy at a rapid rate,” considers Martyn. “Digital is now touching every aspect of our lives across governance, utility services,
transportation, education, healthcare and banking. This transformation is shepherded by adoption of technologies like cloud, mobility, analytics and collaboration tools,” he elaborates. This year, Xerox launched 29 ConnectKey-enabled printers and multifunction devices with simple and secure on-the-go capabilities, cloud connectivity, and access to productivity boosting features and apps. The new ConnectKey portfolio transforms traditional printing devices into smart, connected workplace assistants that reflect the evolving needs of today’s businesses. Personalized workflows, onetouch access to the cloud and multi-layered security features are the new print, copy and fax. The family of products include a variety of sizes, speeds and capabilities to match the needs of small- and medium-sized businesses as well as large enterprises, with a consistent user experience across the portfolio. The new products include the VersaLink and AltaLink series. The VersaLink devices are designed for small workgroups and distributed teams, and include 19 printers and multifunction printers (MFPs). The AltaLink series include 10 MFPs designed for larger workgroups or

print volume needs. Both product lines offer streamlined business processes, industryleading intuitive user experience, mobile & cloud readiness and total security for both documents and devices. “Xerox is also focused on creating innovative technologies that help organizations achieve their sustainability goals, such as going paperless. Going paperless not only improves efficiencies and brings transparency at workplaces but it also reduces the carbon footprint by nearly eliminating paper, printing, shipping and other document handling costs. We’ve also developed products that consume less power,” describes Martyn.
Xerox at HID – showcases how Inkjet solutions enable customers to move into today’s biggest growth areas At the recent Hunkeler Innovationdays, customers were excited to get the right technology at a reduced cost compared to traditional Inkjet presses – Xerox’s lower cost systems making Inkjet more accessible and open new business opportunities for customers. Throughout HID, Xerox showcased how its Inkjet solutions enable customers to move into today’s biggest growth areas including catalogues, books, transactional and direct mail. “We showcased our Inkjet solutions and demonstrated how they enable customers

to move into today’s biggest growth areas including Catalogues, Books, Transactional and Direct Mail. The Xerox entry Inkjet portfolio featured at Hunkeler Innovationdays (HID) includes the Xerox Brenva HD Production Inkjet Press, Xerox Trivor 2400 Inkjet Press and Xerox Rialto 900 Inkjet Press. In addition to these, Xerox FreeFlow Core, Xerox FreeFlow Digital Publisher, XMPie PersonalEffect suite, XMPie Circle and XMPie Campaigns-on-Demand were also displayed at the show,” informs Martyn. Digitally produced book pages in Western Europe and the U.S. will surpass 160 billion pages in 2019 and more than 40 billion colour catalogue pages will be printed annually on digital devices in Western Europe and the U.S. Xerox’s new Inkjet technology demonstrated at Hunkeler is available now for print providers to take advantage of these market opportunities. The Xerox Trivor 2400 Inkjet Press with High Fusion Ink delivers a wider colour gamut that, when combined with less-expensive standard Offset coated stocks, puts more high-quality Book and Catalogue jobs within the reach of Inkjet production.
Niche applications for Inkjet production Two of Xerox’s most versatile solutions for Digital production that print in both colour and black and white are:
The Xerox Rialto 900 Inkjet Press, which features two in-line finishing options: a dynamic perforator and second dual highcapacity stacker. The dynamic perforator enables the creation of horizontal, vertical or t-section tear offs — such as coupons, reply cards and payment stubs — opening up new opportunities in the transactional and direct mail markets. The Xerox Brenva HD Production Inkjet Press, which can accommodate up to eight different paper drawers, handle stock weights from 60-220 gsm, and up to a B3 Plus sheet size. InfoTrends’ 2012–2017 U.S. Digital Production Printing Application Forecast explores 28 specific application segments (promotional, publishing, transactional, packaging, utility, consumer and general office) and measures digitally printed application volume changes in several key market segments. The Book market shows the largest gains of all segments, with a predicted increase of over 40 billion pages during the five-year span. Applications such as Direct Mail, Magazines, Catalogues and Brochures are also expected to make healthy gains in Digital production.

information to be sent to individuals. Printed catalogues also complement online marketing as they allow a different media with which to be creative – media type, coatings, metallics, format size etc. “It’s definitely a segment to explore now with inkjet and toner based technology, plus workflow solutions that enable the once static catalogue to really come alive,” suggests Martyn.
Plans to take elements of HID forums to publishers Xerox plans to take elements of both HID forums to global publishers in 2017. “We have seen the benefits of these solutions in Publishing industries globally; India is surely following the trend in volume,” says Martyn. “Our objective is to take this value
and message to end customers, especially Publishers and Book Printers, and highlight our global strength. Locally, Xerox has exhibited at Indian Trade fairs during 2017 and we’ll also be taking our Versant solutions on a roadshow around other cites – Kochi and Chennai,” he continues. “Please come and see us, let’s talk about your business objectives over the coming years. I’m sure we at Xerox, with our partners can develop real value add, compelling solutions for all our clients, much more than just providing an item of hardware, to allow us all to not just grow, but prosper together – for the long term,” he concludes.
In order to explore this segment further, Digital print vendors need to help the Publishing industry remain efficient and competitive as their business models change. Personalization and relevancy are extremely important in today’s market. Companies have to sell their brand and ethos to consumers before selling them their products. Retailers must have a communications strategy that is relevant to the activity and loyalty of customers. The personalized catalogues segment is interesting. Not everyone buys online, many millions don’t. Now behavioural purchasing data is now being captured to allow real dynamic, timely, personalized and relevant

Siemens and HP partner to advance 3D printing HP’s Multi Jet Fusion 3D printing technology integrated with Siemens’ flagship NX software for product development and manufacturing
With the creation of HP-certified Additive Manufacturing (AM) software module from Siemens, HP and Siemens have decided to accelerate 3D printing for industrial production. The new software module, Siemens NX AM for HP Multi Jet Fusion, is now available from Siemens PLM Software as an extension to Siemens’ end-to-end design-toproduction solution for additive manufacturing.
Siemens NX users can maximize the number of prints to be executed within the HP Multi Jet Fusion 3D printer build volume by loading multiple 3D part models into NX, and then auto nesting and submitting them (powered by integrated Materialise capabilities) directly to the HP 3D printer.

The NX software module will allow customers to develop and manage parts in a single software environment for their HP 3D printing projects, avoid costly and time-consuming data conversions and third-party tools, and improve their overall design-tofinished-part workflow efficiency. Siemens and HP are also aligning future technology roadmaps to enable designers and engineers to completely re-imagine products to take advantage of HP’s 3D printing capabilities, escape the limitations of conventional manufacturing, and cost-effectively produce new products at faster speeds. This in turn will lead to greatly expanded opportunities for the industrial 3D printing of innovative designs. Siemens’ new software module will enable NX customers to combine design, optimization, simulation, preparation of print jobs, and inspection processes for HP Multi Jet Fusion 3D printed parts in a managed environment. Users can now load multiple 3D part models into NX, and auto nest and submit them to an HP 3D printer, all in a single environment and with a minimum of steps. The NX and Multi Jet Fusion integration also eliminates the need for data conversion between software applications or process steps and, in the future, is intended to allow unprecedented control, including material characteristics down to the individual voxellevel. This will result in the ability to print parts with variable textures, density, strength and friction, as well as thermal, electrical, and conductivity characteristics. “HP and Siemens are bringing together the best in design and manufacturing workflow software for the best in 3D printing, unleashing a wave of new product possibilities with the speed, quality, and economics required for the modern digital industrial era,” said Michelle Bockman, global head of 3D Printing Commercial Expansion and Development, HP Inc. “We look forward to collaborating with Siemens to continually raise the industry bar on what’s possible

Engineering Software, Siemens PLM Software. “Deepening our partnership with HP and driving their innovative 3D printing technology is especially important as companies look to increase speed to market, differentiate on product performance, simplify production and supply chain operations, and implement new business models.
In October 2016 Siemens introduced a new comprehensive solution to unleash the full potential of the burgeoning additive manufacturing revolution. The solution is comprised of integrated design, simulation, digital manufacturing, data and process management software. The set of offerings helps companies fully leverage the benefits of the latest additive manufacturing technology. In the past 12 months Siemens also delivered a baseline of eight new NX based Additive
Manufacturing software modules. Their customers now have access to AM modules for AM design, lattice design, topology optimization, NASTRAN optimization, simulation, and printing – including build tray configuration, support structures and nesting (2D+3D). They are working closely on many AM projects with NX customers to integrate modules designed for their businesses.

Award winning technologies bring clear advantages and address the needs of the industry for faster turnarounds and superior, consistent quality
Turnkey workflow bundles address essential tasks
Today, label converters are increasingly challenged. Shorter runs, shorter lead times, higher and more consistent print quality, and 100% regulatory compliance are a given. These parameters are driving ever-faster adoption of digital label technologies by label converters. The logical result is that more converters are recognizing the need to bring prepress in house. This is the only way to efficiently feed their digital presses, take time out of the production process, and gain greater control over the production of flexo plates. Esko offers solutions that remove the hurdles at each step of the workflow and automate as many repetitive tasks as possible, thus helping converters reduce waste, and improve the predictability and reliability of consistently superior quality plates. The daily challenge of workflow automation is the key. Shorter print run lengths and shortened delivery times require flexo plates to be ready faster within a reliable delivery window – this is the ultimate solution to ensure print production is not jeopardized by press downtime waiting for plates. To support this, Esko has taken the innovative approach of moving operational control further upstream to the prepress department by integrating the platemaking process with the prepress workflow.
This is accomplished by the introduction of Automation Engine Quick Start for Labels, a turnkey workflow solution for label converters that includes a subset of the full Automation Engine capabilities, enabling implementation of a proven automated workflow in just 1 week. In addition, the full Automation Engine solution now includes a platemaking module that enables control of the platemaking process from prepress, further streamlining the label production process while reducing labour requirements and plate waste.
Automation Engine QuickStart for Labels is an out-of-the-box pre-configured workflow bundle that addresses the majority of the essential prepress tasks for labels, no matter what printing technology is used – digital (toner & inkjet), flexo, offset or gravure.

Global Graphics extends relationship with HP Indigo Harlequin RIP engine chosen inside HP Production Pro for Indigo Labels & Packaging presses. Global Graphics, developer of platforms for digital printing including the Harlequin RIP, has announced that it has extended its relationship with HP Indigo to include the HP Indigo range of labels and packaging presses. The Harlequin RIP has been chosen as the RIP engine inside the HP Production Pro for Indigo Labels & Packaging. This is the new HP digital front end (DFE) designed to drive all HP Indigo digital labels and packaging presses. The HP Indigo WS6800 will be the first press that comes optionally equipped with the HP Production Pro and this will later be extended to the HP Indigo 8000, the HP Indigo 20000 and the HP Indigo 30000 presses. These presses produce labels, folding cartons, flexible packaging and shrink sleeves, and require a powerful digital front end to produce the performance and versatility that converters print shops need, especially as more and more variability is used in this sector. The Harlequin RIP already provides the RIPping power for the DFE that is used across the entire HP Indigo commercial press range. These presses, known for their exceptional “digital offset” quality and high productivity, are used for a wide variety of applications such as photobooks, direct marketing and publishing. Gary Fry, Global Graphics’ CEO comments, “We enjoy a longstanding relationship with HP Indigo. We are delighted that the Harlequin RIP, as well as our partnership approach to engineering and support, has so

basic configuration to increase RIP capacity even further and control multiple presses from a single server.
Roy Faigenbloom, HP Indigo product manager says, “Global Graphics technology is proven in the field. We have thousands of customers today whose commercial presses use the Harlequin-based HP Production Pro. Harlequin offers the needed processing power to drive labels and packaging workflows and Global Graphics has proved itself to be a very responsive technology partner.”
Global Graphics first announced its partnership with HP to provide printing software for HP Indigo print servers in 2002 with the introduction of the HP Production Pro. The two companies’ collaboration was expanded again in 2004 when Global Graphics partnered with HP to provide the Harlequin RIP as the standard on-board RIP that shipped with every HP Indigo 5000 digital press. At IPEX 2010 a new agreement was signed to provide Harlequin for the DFEs that drive all HP Indigo commercial presses and IHPS devices (HP PageWide Industrial).
Global Graphics and HP Indigo have collaborated to ensure that converters who install a new press alongside an existing model will be able to match the weight of output, regardless of their pre-existing HP solution, an important factor for regulated markets. They will also be able to achieve the same colour, including emulated brand colours, while benefiting from the speed advantages that the Harlequin RIP brings. HP Production Pro is built on the fieldproven foundations of Production Pro with the Harlequin RIP, Esko Color Engine, and PrintOS cloud connectivity. The Production Pro provides a single point of control to the press operator to streamline and manage the print workflow. It allows extra performance to be added to HP Indigo digital presses when required because it offers a unique capability of scaling up the RIP hardware up to 8x the
The Harlequin RIP is known for its highperformance and reliability, notably in production intensive environments. It is the industry benchmark for speed even as workflows become more complex, carrying larger amounts of data than ever before. While the use of variable data is still a relatively small proportion of label and packaging print it is expected to grow and Harlequin’s feature for processing these files – Harlequin VariData – will ensure that print jobs continue to be RIPped at speed. Global Graphics was present at the Label Expo stand 9B17.

A focus on Fixed Colour Palette printing: The future of flexography Asahi Photoproducts (stand 5A34) brings innovation, education to Labelexpo Europe 2017. Asahi Photoproducts, a pioneer in flexographic photopolymer plate development, showcased its AWP waterwashable flexographic plate solutions featuring Pinning Technology for Clean Transfer at Labelexpo Europe 2017. “Labelexpo Europe is always a highlight in our show schedule,” states Akihiro Kato, Managing Director of Asahi Photoproducts Europe. “That is especially true this year as interest in higher quality and more efficient production of labels and packaging is heating up across Europe. At the show, our experts were on hand to help visitors better understand how Asahi AWP plates can improve OEE and profitability without any compromise in quality. Visitors to our stand saw printed application examples and got advice from our experts about the best plates for their individual needs.” Asahi experts also spoke with visitors about fixed colour palette printing, which uses a fixed palette of up to seven inks to virtually eliminate the need for spot colour inks. Because it uses a fixed set of inks, there is no wash-up required between jobs, and combo jobs are made easier. Asahi plates with Pinning Technology for Clean Transfer deliver the precise plate-to-plate register required to implement this printing process successfully. “In our opinion,” adds Mr. Kato “this is the future of flexography, especially for flexible packaging, and favourably positions flexography to compete with digital printing for all but the very shortest runs.” New at Labelexpo from Asahi Photoproducts was the AWP-DEW plate solution, incorporating the renowned quality properties of AWP-DEF plates with the addition of a faster plate processing speed, making this plate ideal for labels and packaging
operations with higher plate throughput looking to achieve significant quality and OEE benefits.
Voice of the Customer “Converters looking to move away from gravure and offset are truly surprised by what AWP can achieve,” according to Matt Francklow, Managing Director, Creation Reprographics. “We pioneered the Asahi AWP water washable plates technology in the UK from the outset. The plate delivers outstanding performance compared to other photopolymer plates on the market; … the number of repeat clients we now have on board all utilising the technology proves that its exceptional print accuracy and quality is appreciated.” Another satisfied Asahi customer is Colognia Press, a Czech-based label converter, who needed to find a way to improve OEE. “With the flexo plates we were using, we had excessive stop times to clean or replace plates,” says Bohdan Holona, Manager of Desktop Publishing. “For long-run jobs, this meant half of the time to produce the job was downtime. And even for shorter runs, we were not happy with the consistency from beginning to end of the job, often requiring press stops to clean plates or otherwise adjust quality.” After looking at several alternate solutions, Holona reports
the company chose to implement the Asahi AWP platemaking system. “Now,” he says, “We can run a full 10 kilometre job without stopping. We even ran a 22-hour job with one set of plates, no stops, and very consistent quality from beginning to end. It’s been amazing!”
Pinning Technology for Clean Transfer A feature of many of Asahi’s flexographic printing plates, Pinning Technology for Clean Transfer enables a clean ink transfer and prevents ink accumulating on the plate surfaces and shoulders in screen areas. This leads to fewer cleaning intervals and reduced press downtime, as well as significant quality improvements. Precise plate register achieved with Asahi plates ensures very high quality process printing with a fixed colour palette, minimizing the need to use and manage spot colour inks. Pinning Technology for Clean Transfer allows a kiss-touch printing pressure setting. It makes use of low plate surface tension, made possible by a specially engineered Asahi polymer chemistry, to inhibit liquid flow. The ink forms a globule, with a large contact angle and high pinning point. This results in a cleaner and more homogeneous ink transfer from plate to substrate, helping flexographic printers meet the ever-increasing quality demands of their customers.

At the drupa, TCPL Packaging, one of the largest packaging printing companies in India, ordered three Rapida 106 presses from KBA-Sheetfed. One of them already started its journey to the TCPL Silvassa plant in autumn 2016. The second started production in the Guwahati plant at the end of August. This is a special press with six inking units, coating tower, two intermediate drying units, each with a further inking unit and coating tower, and a three-fold delivery extension. It has a UV function, pile logistics and has been set 450 mm higher for packaging production. Now a total of six Rapida 106 high-performance presses are in operation at TCPL – two at each of the locations Haridwar, Silvassa and Guwahati. A
seventh and thus the third from the drupa package is expected to arrive shortly.
Complex configurations The new Rapida 106 is already the company’s second with a very special configuration. In Haridwar, a long Rapida 106 with eight inking units, coating tower and extended delivery, as well as a cold foil module, has been in production for two years. It has additional packages for printing cardboard and foils, is equipped for UV/mixed operation and, among other things, is automated with pile logistics, a non-stop automatic function and FAPC plate changing.

In addition, TCPL produces a whole range of other packaging – through to cigarettes and premium packaging. Many of the products of TCPL have won international awards.
EPS at Pack Expo 2017 Launches advanced object printing machine with XAAR technology Xaar has announced the launch of the RotoJET, the latest advancement in cylindrical object inkjet printing from its company in the US, Engineered Printing Solutions (EPS). The launch will take place at Pack Expo 2017 (Las Vegas Convention Centre – September 25-27, 2017). The Roto-Jet from EPS, provider of product printing equipment, is a multi-colour, UV-LED, high-resolution printer that offers state-of-theart digital printing technology. Print reliability in the Roto-JET is assured with its use of the
Xaar 1003 printheads featuring Xaar’s unique TF Technology. Ink is recirculated within the printhead, directly past the back of the nozzle during drop ejection, at the highest flow rates in the industry. This ensures unrivalled reliability even in the harshest environments. The Roto-JET is designed specifically for decorating cylindrical objects in vertical mode – including those that are flat walled or tapered – and is therefore the ideal printer for companies producing promotional products, craft brewers, wineries and Ad Specialty
companies looking to offer their customers a short run option at high production rates. Xaar’s TF Technology is essential for printing in vertical mode, as it ensures the ink is in constant motion inside the printheads so that sedimentation and subsequent nozzle blocking when jetting is avoided. With average speeds of 800 parts per hour (pph), it features a synchronised printing and curing operation which prints full CMYKWW, with optional primer and varnish printheads available. Easy to load and unload, this new system can accommodate either manual or automatic operation. In addition, the ellipticalstyle race track conveyance and vertical design keeps the printer within a manageable footprint. “We are very excited about the launch of the Roto-JET at Pack Expo, which is in response to market demand,” comments Oscar Planas, Xaar’s Director of Global Marketing. “EPS chose the Xaar 1003 for its excellent overall performance and specifically because no other technology can match Xaar’s TF Technology when printing vertically. The combination of the EPS product printing expertise and Xaar technology in one solution provides a great return on investment for manufacturers in search of an object printing system.” Visitors will see the Roto-JET in action during Pack Expo at the EPS booth.

Xaar is strengthening business in India Xaar strengthens Indian position with a wide portfolio of inkjet printheads and new technology for a variety of print applications. Xaar’s CEO, Doug Edwards confirmed that Xaar is strengthening its business in India with its wide portfolio of inkjet printheads and new technology for a variety of print applications. Edwards also outlined the importance of the Indian market to the company’s global goal to reach annual sales of £220m by 2020. Speaking at an event at the Hotel Narmada at the Trident, Gurgaon, Edwards gave an update on each of the four strategic pillars to Xaar’s2020 goal. “Our focus for the last two years has been to broaden our horizons into a wider range of print applications, all of which are of significant interest to our customers and partners in India. I am delighted to say that results from the first half of this year show that we are making good progress.” “Product revenues outside of Ceramics are growing by 60%; global sales into the Graphics sector grew by 33%, and we have also made good progress in our Packaging and Product Printing markets, where global sales jumped by 54%. We expect the Packaging and Product Printing area of the business to be about a third larger than Ceramics by the end of this year. In addition, we have seen an increase in our Asian business, which now makes up 47% of the company’s overall sales.”

New High Laydown Technology for Indian Ceramics and Packaging markets Edwards announced that Xaar’s High Laydown (HL)Technology, initially launched in the Ceramics market, is now available for packaging customers, enabling raised effects to be added to substrates, transforming standard labels and folding cartons into high value packaging for products that can command a premium. In ceramics applications, High Laydown Technology allows effects such as gloss and adhesives to be applied with unprecedented laydown levels – for example, the Xaar 1003 C with HL Technology can achieve a laydown of up to 90 g/m2 at 35 m/min line speed. For labels and packaging, High Laydown Technology with UV varnish enables raised or tactile effects to be printed in single pass and with a single print bar – for example, the Xaar 1003 U with HL Technology can achieve a varnish film thickness of 80 microns at 25 m/ min line speed. Competitor offerings typically require multiple print bars or much lower line speed to achieve the same result.
Extended product range includes aqueous printheads In addition, the recent printhead launches from Xaar are starting to shift the company towards a broader reach. Of particular
interest to the Indian market are the Xaar 1201 and Xaar 5501, both of which are capable of handling aqueous inks. This means that OEMs looking to produce textiles or graphics printers using water-based inks now have access to robust and reliable technologies. Already making a significant impact in Asia, the Xaar 1201 is a Thin Film Piezo Silicon Micro Electrical Mechanical System (MEMS) technology printhead for printing Wideformat Graphics (WFG) and Textiles with dye sublimation, eco-solvent or aqueous inks. To complement the Xaar 1201, Xaar recently announced the Xaar 5501, which previewed in China a few months ago. This compact and lightweight printhead is the first product resulting from Xaar’s collaboration with Xerox, and delivers high print quality combined with low printing costs, whilst integration costs will also be kept to a minimum. For over 13 years, Xaar has been the only printhead manufacturer to have a direct and local presence in India, with its Indian regional office located in New Delhi. “We are very committed to supporting our customers and partners in India,” comments Doug Edwards. “Because we have a regional base in India, our customers and partners benefit from local technical expertise, a quick response and a printhead partner with amore in depth understanding of the Indian marketplace. Our focus is always on helping our customers get to market quickly with a range of products their own customers want and need. Having a local presence is the only way to serve our customers well.”

TCPL Packaging installs India’s 100th Kongsberg table 2nd machine goes to Silvassa as three packaging production plants there offer a considerable amount of new packaging development and innovation. TCPL Packaging has installed the Indian carton industry’s 100th Kongsberg – a Kongsberg X20 sample making table. TCPL Packaging is one of the two largest carton manufacturers in the country and the largest Indian carton maker to be publicly listed on the stock exchange. With six plants in four cities, TCPL has recently commissioned its first uniquely configured gravure press to enter the flexible packaging market. The new Kongsberg X20 machine is the same size as an older XL20 installed ten years ago which is still running perfectly. TCPL Packaging’s Managing Director Mr. Saket Kanoria points out that the first Kongsberg is still performing at its optimum at TCPL’s corporate and design office in Mumbai while the second sample maker was purchased for Silvassa simply because the three TCPL packaging production plants there offer a considerable amount of new packaging development and innovation. The Kongsberg X20 new series of upgradable cutting and creasing sample makers delivers a great deal of flexibility and adaptability with newer software and tool options, such as laser-like cutting of extremely delicate and intricate patterns. Mr. Kanoria places great emphasis on the reliability of the Kongsberg, saying, “Our
and new types of openings and closures, the die lines keep changing quite frequently and the new ideas must be turned into samples immediately to get customer feedback. “In fact, we have always had the Kongsberg in our corporate office where our design and prepress are also located. Our customers sometimes use it to try out some of their ideas. In short, the brand owners love the Kongsberg sample making table and they expect you as a carton maker to have it.
first table is ten years old, but it is still like new. Some consumables may have been purchased, but no major repair or maintenance issue has arisen in the last ten years, which is remarkable.” Talking about the performance of the sample maker and the role that it plays in the company, Mr. Kanoria says, “The folding carton industry is so dynamic that brand owners are continuously changing their packaging with marketing offers and formats. We also try to present new types of cartons to them with improvements or innovations. To keep improving the surface finishing, shapes
The biggest customer of course is our own marketing department.” TCPL was also one of the first carton makers to invest in Esko’s packaging design and prepress software as well as the Kongsberg sample making table. Mr. Winderam said, “The Konsgberg tables produce samples as close as possible to actual cartons. We have a huge selection of tools for cutting different materials as well. Adaptability in the hardware, and also in the software, for packaging design is an important part of the solution. Our users spend less time on the table and more in the prepress and design, which is why, apart from innovating on the table, we are constantly improving the features and integration of our software. We don’t really think of the table as a product. We think of the entire prepress design, prototyping and production as a solution where the table should not be a bottleneck.” At a small ceremony at the TCPL Packaging corporate office in Mumbai, Mr. John Winderam, GM, South & South East Asia representing Esko and X-Rite, presented Mr. Kanoria with a memento commemorating the company for installing the 100th Kongsberg in the country. Both Mr. Winderam and Mr. Kanoria agreed that although a reliable sample maker was an invaluable prototype device, the key is really the software and the workflow.
